Hello! So sorry to bother, but have you had any updates on the Word-Stream/Speechify situation?

Just one: like I posted on Xitter and Bluesky last night, as of yesterday afternoon, the links to individual works as they were listed on WordStream are gone from both Google and Bing. Hurray, right? Surely we’re all sick of this whole debacle and there’s far more important things to worry about. If all is well that ends well, surely there’s no need to still be angry.

Well, I am. Here’s why:

When I checked on Wednesday, the links to my own work on WordStream were still listed. So rather than it taking a week after Cliff Weitzman first hid the fanwork from view, it took a little over a week from the moment he first promised privately that they would be deleted. Which, fine. Perhaps Cliff didn’t really know what he was talking about when he gave that timeframe. Or maybe he told a little white lie to create the impression that he always intended to do the right thing. It seems more likely to me, though, that Cliff still believed—even after the backlash he received—that he would get away with honoring only individual takedown requests. Or worse, that he needed just a little bit more time with the stolen material to figure out an alternative way to profit off it—preferably without us noticing, this time.

But who knows? I certainly don’t! All we can do is speculate, because publicly, Cliff Weitzman has remained completely silent on his copyright infringements. All we got was the initial justifications he and his sockpuppet accounts used in comments on the original Reddit and Tumblr posts. After those were so understandably ill-received, Cliff only ever communicated with a few individual authors who contacted him directly and repeatedly, blocking people who addressed the issue on Twitter and quietly distancing himself from WordStream by deleting a blog he’d posted to Speechify.com dated December 20th—where Cliff promoted WordStream’s platform specifically to fanfiction readers. (See my enormous timeline post for details and screenshots of said posts before they were taken down.)

And this is why I’m still angry: As long as Cliff Weitzman faces no real consequences for his actions, he won’t see a need to own up to his mistake; and as long as he’s able to delay taking responsibility, this isn’t over. This didn’t end well.

After all, wasn’t this the next-best scenario for Cliff, second only to him turning WordStream into a (for him) effortless, infinite money-making machine? He took something we provided for free and fed it to AI so he could more easily put it behind a paywall; we found out and protested; Cliff quietly erased all evidence of his crime; and we went—almost equally quietly—away.

I want to make sure you know that I continue to be genuinely amazed and intensely grateful for how quickly the news about WordStream’s copyright infringement was shared—and continues to be shared—throughout fandom, on tumblr in particular. If it hadn’t been for our collective outcry here and on Reddit, WordStream would very likely still be up in its original form, and Weitzman would be reaping the benefits (those subscription prices were steep) today.

But it’s been frustrating to see that, with the exception of mentions in articles on Substack and Fansplaining (the latter of which is a particularly awesome and thorough read on fandom’s decontextualization) and a Fanlore listing, our outrage never really spilled out beyond the safely insulated, out-of-the-way spaces that are tumblr, a handful of subreddits and bluesky. And I believe that—unfortunately—we are collectively responsible for that part, as well.

Most of us seemed content to only spread the word by circulating the same two posts on tumblr. (Have we all given up completely on every other social media platform? Am I the only remaining straggler?) And soon after Cliff Weitzman hid WordStream’s fanfiction category from view, our interest in the issue took a sharp dive even there. Are we genuinely deceived into believing the issue has been fully resolved? Do we truly fail to realize that Weitzman’s refusal to admit that what he did was wrong left the door wide open for the next greed-driven tech bro to wander through? Or is the true naivety in thinking that, as a community, we can keep this kind of attack on fandom from happening again? Has our disillusionment already gotten that bad?

However the situation spins out from here, Cliff’s actions will set a precedent. If we fail to show Cliff and his ilk that attempts to profit off fandom’s unpaid labor have consequences, their tech companies will keep trying until something eventually sticks. They might be a little smarter about it next time; obscure their sources a bit better, maybe leave the titles and the authors’ names off. Or maybe they’ll go a bolder route: maybe next time they cross the line they’ll do it boldly enough for IP holders to take notice and stop tolerating fanwork entirely.

Doesn’t that make you angry, too?

There’s this whole other mess of thoughts I would love to be able to untangle about how commercial influence is contributing to the steady erosion of fandom’s foundations, but I’m tired, and other people have said it all much more eloquently than I ever could. Seriously, go read that article on Fansplaining. Or listen to the podcast version of it. Better yet, as long as you’re wearing your noise-canceling headphones, go listen to a podfic of one of your favorite fandoms’ works, and enjoy the collaborative joy and creativity of the people who Cliff Weitzman refuses to believe exist. (In one of Speechify’s other blogs, Cliff claims there are only 272 podfics on AO3. Would you like to run that ChatGPT prompt again, Cliff?). Honestly, much like Cliff Weitzman’s infuriating denial of the fact that fandom fucking has this covered, thank you very much, there’s so. Many. More. Things for us to talk about. There’s the connotations of WordStream’s dubious ‘upload’ button, for instance, or the fact that the app scraped (and in some cases, allegedly, still lists) copyright-protected original fiction as well, or WordStream’s complete lack of contact information, which is illegal for an internationally operating app. And oh! Has anyone reported more thoroughly on Cliff’s app’s options to ‘simplify’ or ‘modernize’ uploaded works, or—my own very favorite abomination—to translate them into something Cliff calls ‘Gen-Z Language’? Much like his atrocious AI book covers, it would be hilarious, if it didn’t make steam come out of my ears.

Anyway, there it is. I highly recommend you do all of that. And then, if you aren’t familiar with it already, go do some research re: fair use and your rights as the copyright owner of your works. A good number of people commenting on this controversy expressed stunned surprise or fearful hesitation about claiming any sort of ownership of their fanfiction. The more informed we are about our rights, the more willing we will be to defend them.

Please don’t stop writing or sharing your work. If you can’t bring yourself to work on your WIPs today (trust me, I get it), post about this situation instead. Tweets, skeets, whateverthefucks—about WordStream’s theft, about how this reflects on Speechify’s already shady business practices, about how Cliff’s actions and justifications have personally affected you. You’re welcome to share or copy my posts on these platforms, but since Cliff already blocked me, I very much prefer you post your own. If you do, call Cliff Weitzman by his full name and tag or include both WordStream and Speechify to ensure Weitzman will recognize he has both a personal as well as a professional stake in handling the situation with integrity. Leave your concerns in reviews on the Speechify app. (We weren’t provided with a more appropriate place to put them, after all!) Consider calling for a Speechify boycott until Cliff accepts accountability for his actions.

Do avoid making exaggerated claims, and don’t call for physical retaliation against Cliff’s person or his property. We don’t want to give him or Speechify even the weakest of grounds to claim defamation or threats of violence. Focus on the facts: they’re incriminating enough by themselves. Show Cliff that we’re determined to keep bringing up his company’s wrongdoings in public spaces until he demonstrates that he understands why taking these freely shared fanworks and monetizing them was wrong, and takes steps to ensure it won’t happen again.

One last thing—and this is really more of a general reminder—please stop suggesting I handle this situation for you. People have come to me asking for action items. The resulting flashbacks to my days as an office assistant were extremely upsetting. In all seriousness, casting me as some sort of coordinator or driving force behind this backlash actively hurts the cause. Not only does it downplay fandom’s collective efforts, it also makes our message extremely vulnerable. It would be all too easy for Cliff to silence one singular source. Wikipedia will not maintain mentions of this controversy as long as it leads only to Easter Kingston’s attempt to summarize what happened as it was happening. You only know my name because I stumbled upon WordStream’s theft and decided to get my friends involved. I am not more knowledgeable, more skilled or more angrily invested in this issue than you are (or can, or should, be). I draw pictures and I write stories and I worry about the shift I’m seeing in fandom after having been on this ride for even a few pre-livejournal rounds.

I’m not going to stop doing any of those things. But I am going to allow myself to step away for a bit, make my wife dinner, and catch up on our shows.

Welp. Been a minute. Overdue for an update.

So.

The Depressing Bit

Going to go ahead and rip off the band-aids quick.

First off, I passed my one-year laidoffiversary a couple weeks back. Still no new job despite applying every day of the week for the past year. A lot of dead-end interviews. Three times as many scams and I don’t dare guess how many entirely false job openings posted by companies who were never hiring in the first place, but wanted the positions out in the open to scare their actual employees with the threat of being easily replaced and to look good to investors with the illusion of growth. So there’s that.

Then, while doing my taxes, I came to a fun little revelation.

You know my novella The Vampyres, ala eBook and paperback? Had its birthday last year, March 15th. As I plugged in my earnings from that book from Draft 2 Digital’s doc, I discovered I'd made a grand total of $278 from it over the course of 2024. Cool.

I paid $275 to purchase the ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers) for the eBook and paperback respectively, and a barcode. Which would mean that I made approximately $3 in profit from The Vampyres after a year.

Except I also spent $25 on a ‘change token’ with Draft 2 Digital because I had to make an alteration to the book's interior.

Meaning I spent $300 total on self-publishing this book. And have so far made back $275 of it.

Still glad I did it. Still glad a few folks might someday come across it and enjoy the read. But it’s…yeah. Kind of a glum revelation with March 2025 coming up.

Still job hunting. Still writing. Still hoping and going.

Substack (For Now)

While I’ve been posting my chapter updates on my Substack for a bit, and my stuff is still going up there for the foreseeable future, I’m going to start shopping around for an alternative platform. Not a big fan of how Substack is apparently buddying up to Elongated Muskrat and his specific idea of ‘freedom of speech.’ The main things I’m looking for is a lack of price tag and easy usability. I’ll let everyone know if/when I make the switch to something better.

The Vampyres is on StoryGraph (and so am I). I’d appreciate you leaving any reviews on there rather than Goodreads, the latter being one of Amazon’s Bezos Babies. Really, nice reviews anyplace where books are picked up will help, but do consider a hop to StoryGraph in particular.

Merchandise

One of my New Year’s Resolutions is finally setting up shop with a little merch. I want to make stationery and possibly some novelty mugs* as things to start with. I’m browsing around for a good manufacturer and shipping combo option while trying to 100% avoid Shopify or affiliated sites. Not real keen on them being fine with selling Nazi and MAGA merch. (Frankly not keen on how dodging Nazi infiltration has become a rote part of trying to ~Sell Myself~, but here we are.)

I’ll post prospective product pics once I have something solid. Cross your fingers for me.

*The mugs are mostly for me as I have a devastating addiction to charming drinkware. But I guess you guys can have some too.

Hey there lovelies! Wow, two recaps in one night! That's overkill! (JK I'm so behind, lol). I know we're deep into the holidays now, and some of the big ones have passed us by. I hope you've gotten a chance for some down time. I know this time of year can be tough for various reasons, and especially this year given the political climate around the world. Please hear me when I say, you are so very loved. Whether you had a good holiday, or a rough one. Whether you were swamped and busy, or got a break finally and got some rest. You are SO very very loved, no matter what you accomplished today, or this month, or this year. I am seeing so many new folks poking their heads out in the fando-- which is absolutely lovely to see-- and if you're just joining us for the first time, or have been in the fandom since Day One of S1 or anywhere in between-- you too are loved. We are Crew For Life, as Samba says, for a reason. This show brought so many of us together because of it's love, and it's light, and it's fond family. I just wanted to drop a note to thank everyone who has supported the Patreon over the years, or signs up for things like my (free) Substack. It really means a lot.

I update both of those platforms infrequently. I’ve tried to build better habits about that over the years and continually run into the same problem: I don’t want to post anything about what I’m working on unless I’m 110% sure my opinions is informed as possible and I am not sharing anything erroneous. There is so much misinformation out there regarding animals in general and zoos and exotic animal politics especially that I absolutely do not want to add to it.

What that means in practice is that topics often take months to years to research, and big projects need multiple years to end up with something I’m comfortable publishing. (That accreditation reporting writeup was an idea I chewed over for easily two years prior to starting work; then it took spent six months to researching write it up). I have one project in the wings where I can’t even start a major part until Feb 2024, because data collection has to happen after the implementation of a new set of federal regulations. These things are great for creating quality work, but less good for providing people who are supporting your work with something tangible on a reasonably frequent basis.

Also, at this point? Most of my current big projects are so complex - and such novel things to study about the zoo industry - that I’m taking the extra time to really cross every t and dot every i with the research, and then get them peer-reviewed through credible academic journals. I think there’s four or five different projects that will be papers I’m working on simultaneously (and sporadically) right now. And as many of you know, this is a hobby, not a paying profession.

So. Thank you for sticking around through the long silences and the intermittent publications. I have so much I want to talk about, but it has to wait until I can do it right. I have so many cool things planned (like, multiple interactive websites) for once everything is finished and published. Whether or not you’re on the Patreon or just awaiting infrequent Substack updates, I really appreciate all of it.

Update?

I’ve finally begun creating my new blog website (using the free version of Wix). No I’m not abandoning ship—I just figured it’d be “smart” to have a back-up in case anything happens to this account. Y’know, don’t keep all your eggs in one basket, or whatever the fuck.

It will be a replica of everything (bitch as if there’s much) I have here—plus probably some more extras—with way better site navigation and cleaner formatting. Everything here will be there. All new things will be on both. Stories will be updated across multiple platforms and linked accordingly. (I single out “stories” since I have a fair amount of worldbuilding/meta brewing that I won’t be posting on A03, etc.)

I wanted to get ahead of this now while I don’t have a ton of content to migrate and make this more of a pain in the ass than it already is. Honestly, this whole endeavor is part of why I haven’t released anything in *checks notes* seven goddamn months. That, plus a host of time-sucking life events, soul-eating imposter syndrome, and going bare-knuckle with perfectionism and The Plot™️ in a fight to the death. (Spoiler: one has me in a chokehold, the other is kneeing my proverbial nuts. My nose is broken. I’m missing teeth.)

Might also fuck around and start a Substack? Idk. Like I know what the hell that even entails. Are we doing that?

that's great to hear! i'm glad you're enjoying the stories. i'm sorry to hear about Flossy going down. that was a litmag started by a couple friends of mine that i guess folded. unfortunately it's not published anywhere else and i'm probably taking it out of my short story collection. it's a two part story where the first part is 2k and the second part is i think 10k

but! i was hoping eventually to launch some kind of lowkey, easy peasy patreon-esque thing where i could send out some of my work to the people who are interested in it. by that i mean, the work that is most unpublishable. unfortunately, patreon is making changes later this year that aren't compatible at all with what i would need it for, and everything else i've found is just too...i don't know, made-for-seeking-huge-audiences vibe. i do not want a huge audience. until i find a platform that's like "hi mailing list, if you're interested in this story please send me five dollars and in return you will get a PDF or EPUB* of a story too spicy for the general public" ** that 1) doesn't take a million years to set up, 2) is incapable of going viral, and 3) i don't have to update on a consistent basis (and that doesn't cost a ton of money), then these pieces will be unavailable. but surely someone will eventually make such a service

*making ebooks is so hard. at least, making pretty ones. but @emimayooo has found a way so that's one obstacle down

Why i tumblelog

Dari semua tipe online communication (atau socmed secara lebih sempit), aku paling suka format blog. Format teks yang panjang, dimana orang-orang bisa bercerita secara satu arah, dan di sisi lain orang-orang (baik asing dan juga yang kenal secara langsung di dunia nyata) bisa mengenal orang dengan lebih baik.

Aku suka baca cerita orang, itu aja sih. Aku gak terlalu suka IG yang penuh dengan vanity, TikTok yang penuh keriuhan dan bikin attention span makin pendek. Twitter adalah my go-to platform karena ya itu, media komunikasi utamanya adalah kata-kata. Nggak banyak mendistraksi dengan video dan foto seperti IG/TikTok. Dulu aku pernah bikin blogspot deh kekna tapi udah terlupakan, WordPress juga males aku update karena emang ceritanya isinya lebih serius, Substack juga udah kutelantarkan karena kok aku sulit berkomitmen nulis fiksi ya... ya yang paling awet kugunakan adalah Tumblr ini. Entah kenapa rasanya agak lebih tersembunyi aja karena kayanya website ini kurang SEO-friendly, terus isolated aja sama user lain jadi rasanya emang kaya lagi nulis di mading gitu. You know that your writings are out there, and people might be silently reading your writings as they pass, some might even be eagerly waiting for that one new post, but you are not fixated on the vanity metrics.

Kayanya cuma Tumblr doang deh yang bikin jumlah followers tuh private buat si owner... yang keliatan di website orang ya cuma siapa aja yang udah like dan komen. Dan menurutku setting ini bikin orang yang nulis di Tumblr ini lebih... tulus? Nulis ya karena pengen nulis, bukan karena pengen menjaring lebih banyak followers. Gabisa lomba banyak-banyakan followers juga karena ga keliatan sama publik.

Aku nulis Tumblr juga lebih buat diri sendiri sih, seneng aja kalo lagi gabut terus baca-baca entri lama... seru juga ya hidup q. Biarpun tentu nggak ke-capture semua karena ada hal-hal yang cuma bisa jadi konsumsi pribadi. Selain itu, jujur setelah sekolah di Eropa yang sangat menjunjung tinggi privacy, aku juga jadi mikir berulang kali untuk menulis tanpa mensensor aktor-aktor di dalam ceritaku. Emang kita lah yang harus secara proaktif dan hati-hati melindungi personal information kita, termasuk kisah-kisah keseharian.

Jujur 1-2 tahun ke belakang ini aku merasa jarang nulis Tumblr sih :( semoga setelah ini ke depannya aku bisa lebih rajin nulis lagi.

Hi! I've been looking through your shop, is there a mailing list or some other way to be notified if/when your Lascaux mugs are back in stock?

OK SO. I've struggled with newsletter stuff for ages, since most newsletter services are now set up for people who actively or passively make money off their newsletters & send a bunch and that's...uhh...not how I use mine (I send out like 3-5 a year, mostly just re: shop updates, so paying $10+ a month feels bad).

I reluctantly signed up for substack (hisss) a while ago b/c it was the only service I could find that allowed me to have a decent number of subscribers for free, but always felt bad about it b/c they allow so much terrible stuff to be published - and worse, monetized - through their platform.

I love ebooks, but as a format they're a real pain in the ass. If you're not already An eBook Person, getting started is a labyrinth of confusion; you can either sign up for one of the big user-friendly platforms like Kindle, which lock you into using only their bookstore and can delete the books you've bought any time they like, or you can buy from a DRM-free platform and (in most cases) download an EPUB file that most devices can't natively read.

I'm sure this is why webnovels remain a popular storytelling format, and it's one of the big reasons I like to serialize my stories online. As user experience goes, it's hard to beat "click link, begin reading." Up until now I've been using Ko-fi to post and paywall my work, but unfortunately Ko-fi's UX for longform posts kind of ... sucks. For you as the reader, and also me as the writer.

My other options for third-party services are either Patreon (similiarly terrible posting experience, increasingly sex-negative content policies) or Substack (overrun by Nazis). And neither of those offer the kind of granular control I want over content navigation and reader UX.

... Which means, as usual, I'll probably just have to build something myself.
