I’m sure this movie’s been submitted already because it’s arguably the greatest animated film of all time. I have a personal connection to it because I saw it in theaters on opening night with my late father, and we both loved it and I still do. It's the best animated movie because A: it takes one of the most well known comic characters of all time, kills him off in the first few minutes, and then shows you every cooler version of him. B: Has a large amount of representation in its main cast, considering that they're all versions of Spiderman, and that requires a white guy by default. C: everything in it is so well done I can't pick a favorite scene, but the most iconic is the jump off the skyscraper window.

This is probably the best animated film I've ever seen. The animation is definitely the highlight, the way they blend comic book art styles and 3D animation is an absolute joy to look at and is so overwhelmingly creative, every frame of this movie is gorgeous. The impact this had on the industry is undeniable, as we start to see more and more movies getting more creative with their animation styles. It's not just the animation though. All of the characters are entertaining, all of the jokes land and the story is really well done. It leaves me blown away every time I watch it.

This movie kind of changed the western animation industry from the ground up. Apart from being expertly written, funny, and heartfelt, it is also stellarly animated, with a unique visual style that takes direct inspiration from the comic books it adapts and mixes 2d- and 3d-animation in a way and to a degree that hadn't really been seen before in western mainstream. Its critical and monetary success paved the way for mainstream 3d animation to open up to new and excitingly stylised movies that were like a breath of fresh air between the generic Pixar-style animation that had been the largely unchanged norm in the industry since Toy Story circa twenty years earlier**. ITSV divides the screen like panels on a comic page, it uses dots and lines for shading and gradients, doesn't shy away from lowering framerates for stylisation, and makes liberal use of onomatopoeia, both to comedic and dramatic impact. Impact frames and SFX are often hand-drawn and stunningly colourful, and even the simple dialogue scenes astonish with an expressiveness and realism in their depiction of emotions that makes me rewatch a two-second scene of Miles laughing fifteen times in a row. My favourite scene has to be the What's Up Danger scene, the emotional climax of the movie. Set to an absolute banger of a song, it is the moment the entire film has been building up to. I won't spoil anything plot-wise in case you somehow haven't seen this movie, but both from an emotional and a visual standpoint it is Fucking Dope. Conclusion: Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is my favourite movie of all time and I could talk about it for hours. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. Thank you.

Have you SEEN the Whats Up Danger/rising and falling scene? it's a work of art that makes me fall in love with storytelling all over again whenever I see it. Also the impact that it's had on animated film is absolutely being felt at current, if incrementally. Incredible film.

It has an amazing art style based on comics and mixed up due to genre differences. It's really fun and the characters are great, even the side ones. The story line is great and I love Miles and his family.

LBFAD is the most inspiring series I have ever watched and here is why…

Although Love Between Fairy and Devil (LBFAD) only caught my eye on Netflix in December 2023, I’m so glad it did and that I didn’t miss out on this stunning and thought-provoking masterpiece. It is the most inspiring series I have ever watched for many reasons. Aesthetically, I found the beautiful 4K production quality as enjoyable as high-budget productions such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. I frequently felt the need to pause and admire the well-designed sets, and exquisitely detailed costumes of even minor characters. The acting is superb across the board, and the leads act and respond very naturally to each other. The long hair of male characters is especially well-done, falling naturally with subtle highlights and looks real. All these details breathe life into this fantasy world and make it very realistic.

Every line of each song from the phenomenal OST is brimming with hidden meanings related to the series, adding lots of additional context! The artwork created for the opening and ending themes is also full of meaning (minor spoilers ahead). Take, for example, the last picture where the OTP are sitting on a boat in the Oblivion River, the junction between their two tribes, the male lead has removed his crown and hence his responsibilities at least for the moment, and they are watching the sunrise together for the rest of eternity after the close of the series (sigh!)

Every single character of note in the series goes through profound character growth, the only exception being the abstract ultimate villain Taisui. Even the secondary villains and dictator of Shuiyuntian have grown and changed their perceptions by the end. It made me believe that anyone is capable of opening their minds and bettering themselves. Both lead and side characters are repeatedly faced with overwhelmingly bleak choices and heartbreaking challenges, especially in the last ten episodes. Yet every time, they show courage, sacrifice and selfless love that is amazing and very inspiring.

It is rare to find this kind of poignance in any production. I used to find Game of Thrones inspiring due to Daenerys freeing the world of slavery…until Season 8 happened. LBFAD tops Game of Thrones in this regard by freeing two distinct realms from conflict. The actions of the OTP break through a hundred millenia of mutual hatred and relentless conflict between their people with no end in sight, to create a new dawn of lasting peace. LBFAD reminds me of Lord of the Rings in terms of its cinematographic beauty and themes of never losing hope and prevailing over overwhelming odds. However, the stronger focus of LBFAD on the lead couple’s development and on creating multidimensional villains and side characters made it, for me, more engaging to watch.

The world-building and depth of characters has many layers in LBFAD, to the extent that much of the context was clear to me only in retrospect on rewatching the series and on deep reflection. The fast pace of the series also means that a lot of action occurs off-screen in between scenes. There are no filler scenes, there is no room for them. Every scene adds new plot twists and depth to characters, making the series highly addictive.

I am not a native mandarin speaker, and came to realise how beautiful the language is only on encountering LBFAD and its OST. It inspired me to learn mandarin, which makes rewatching the series highly enjoyable as I am able to pick up new nuances. I’m embarrassed to be so late to watch LBFAD after its release in 2022, but have thoroughly enjoyed the posts on Tumblr from fellow fans, including episode analyses, enthralling artwork and links to fanfiction. It has encouraged me to post on Tumblr myself. I have started to post my reflections on each episode while rewatching them, translations and overviews. I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful community!

Anyway since we're on the topic... over the years I've talked about wanting the cut scenes, and I wanted to reflect for a moment on why we want them. I think we want them because, like a delicious cake, once it's all consumed, we still look at the serving plate, hoping we can still lick the icing off the knife, or maybe the baker has some leftover cake back in the kitchen?? Or maybe they can tell us that the secret ingredient to intensifying the chocolate is ESPRESSO... We just want another taste so badly! We want to know the secret ingredients that set it apart from other cakes. And some filmmakers know that, and sometimes they're happy to share the cut scenes on a DVD release, maybe with commentary as to why the scenes were cut, like:

"Here's a scene were Louis kills a priest and ultimately we had an overall run time limit of 2 hours, but it was otherwise a perfectly good scene."

"Here's part of a set of scenes we shot early on where Lestat shows mortal Louis what killing entails, and although we loved it, we ended up improving the Lestat makeup & hair a few weeks later, and for the sake of continuity we had to cut it bc we couldn't go back to that location to reshoot, or it would have taken too much time to fix in post, etc."

Giving over the cut scenes is a little like an artist showing the scrapped versions of a painting composition, and that's fine when the creator wants to invite the viewers into their artistic process, but I think the IWTV filmmakers at the time (and for years after) really wanted the '94 movie to be serious* to the point that releasing cut scenes could have undermined their overall vision... maybe they simply didn't want to invite the audience into their creative process.

IF Tom was still part of VC at all... one of my personal fantasy casting ideas was to have Tom play the Marquis in TVL, and now he's really old enough to do it! 😅 Can you imagine?? Tom playing his own horrible father! Cast younger actors to play kid!Lestat, teen!Lestat, etc.?? Tom!Marquis showing obvious preference for his two older brothers and being horrible to Gabrielle... it could be amazing.

Obviously it wouldn't be adorable like this but... I've always loved Tom Cruise characters when he interacts with kids and teens, he's always seemed very in touch with his inner child, even when that inner child is more of a 12 yo brat. Whole novels could be written on his layered performances with child and teen actors, but for now, just a few thoughts...

^From Jerry Maguire. I can't quite articulate why this was so compelling... iirc, maybe because his character is really frustrated/demoralized in this scene, and there's something comforting about a kid naively telling you that "the human head weighs 8 pounds," as if to say, "Your problems are not really as big a deal as you think they are; live in the present moment." And Tom in this character seems to absorb that deeper meaning and it gives him some relief, it's a step towards his character's growth.

When Tom played Ray in War of the Worlds, he had a teenage son, and there was a heartbreaking scene where Ray had to choose between protecting his son or his daughter. From That Moment In:

Desperate to keep his family together, Ray is forced to leave the terrified Rachel alone for a moment as he puts his weight on Robbie and forces him to the ground as the air around them lights up with smoke and tracer fire. Meanwhile, another couple, fleeing the madness, sees Rachel standing by herself and attempt to rescue her, not knowing that her father is nearby. Looking back, Ray sees this and becomes torn between his children, not wanting to lose either but forced to choose. Robbie assures his father that this is what he wants, “I want to see this,” and to please let him go, which Ray finally, achingly, submits to, seeing that Rachel is being whisked away. Father and son say goodbye as Robbie runs over the crest and Ray rushes down to get his daughter as a hellfire of explosion overtake the hills, giving us the impression Robbie has met his end.

I just love the idea of Tom playing the very character that had caused so much pain for Lestat, that Lestat was always on defense from that man, looooong after he died. Despite all the torment the Marquis inflicted on Lestat, Lestat still gave him a comfortable place to live out his last few years, the roles pretty much reversed as happens with aging parents, Lestat actually nurturing this man (not always in the kindest way but still!) in his feeble old age... and couldn't bring himself to even kill him out of mercy.

Nature & Nurture, Lestat was damaged by his father genetically and emotionally in his formative years, and so much of Lestat's bravado and verbal attacks seem to be a shield for the awful feelings of growing up unloved, unwanted, and beaten for expressing his own desires. So much so that even in canon he often expresses the intensity of his desires far more eloquently and frequently in the narration than he's able to do verbally, even with the characters he cherishes the most. Because to express his love exposed himself to losing it.

Tom could for sure pull off a performance that would capture the Marquis, because he essentially played Lestat with the qualities of a victim perpetuating some of the abuse he suffered from the man who was supposed to be (and was!) his role model for becoming the man he became. 😭

She's a red/big bad wolf combo, she's bi, she gets tragically underused like so many OUaT characters

She’s a werewolf :)

We first see her as Ruby in Storybrooke where she's initially depicted as a fun-loving flirt who spends her nights most likely in a bar while wearing revealing clothes that her grandma disapproves of (and is all in red. Absolutely everything). She lives with her grandma who runs a diner and that's where Ruby works. When Emma wakes up the sleeping town, she tries to leave Granny's and ends up helping in a case that Emma's working on by following her nose. That episode also has her backstory, but when we first see her as Red in the Enchanted Forest, she's confident and helpful and not afraid to use her lycanthropy. But the start of her story has her being an innocent young woman with a love for discovering the world and her boyfriend Peter (of Peter and the Wolf, I guess). She meets Snow while still living with her Granny in her cabin in the woods and takes her in. She's so hopeful - and then she turns into a werewolf and kills Peter (after they all thought he was the werewolf and had chained him to a tree). She is obviously quite traumatized by this and takes off with Snow. But that and her subsequent adventures gives her the growth she needs to be comfortable in her own skin, whether human or wolf. And, when the curse breaks completely, you can see the change in her - she would absolutely walk through fire to help Snow and the other good guys.

Another version where Red Riding Hood also ends up being the Big Bad Wolf. She eats her boyfriend which is sad but she falls in love with Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in like Season 5. Her red cloak is what keeps her in human form which I think is neat. When all the storybook characters are transported to the modern world, she runs a diner with Granny.

She's one of my favorite characters from Once Upon a Time. She's a cool Red Riding hood wolf girl who is bi and has seen like 3 of her love interests and her mother die. She slays very hard so I nominate her. (Also I used to have a crush on her as a kid)

Her job is to hunt them down before they can eat her. this story is very much about failed fairy tales, many of the side character's inspired arcs end in failure, but (having not seen the most recent bits) Ruby is still going strong, and i really like her cape, rose petals, and use of a scythe.

She is THE RRH character of all time. She has a scythe that's also a gun and she has to be the hero because she's got super rare main character powers. She is my happy girl. Gather Conference - Day 1

On Sept 15 & 16, 1400 people gathered together, making it the largest-ever Conference of LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints and their friends, relatives, and leaders.

The speaker's messages were powerful

Iese Wilson - I first heard of Iese when he was a gay student at BYU-Hawaii and he contacted the President of the university to share his story and he became a person many closeted students reached out to

Iese is currently at Arizona State University pursuing a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting.

He used music to convey his message, explaining that the arts are an expression of what it means to be human, which means the arts can teach us.

A tri-tone has a dissonant sound and it's not a place we like to stay. When the dissonance resolves, it feels like a release. Because we don't like to stay in dissonance, it moves the music forward, dissonance leads to resolution. Dissonance is a natural occurrence. It doesn't make things ugly, it leads to beauty.

Sometimes being queer at church feels like being in dissonance without a resolution in sight.

Zion refers to people who are of one heart and one mind and dwell together in righteousness. Being united doesn't mean uniform sameness. Using musical terms, it means being in harmony, being in unison. Not everyone can hit all the notes when they sing. Those different voices can join together to make beautiful music, the differences complementing each other.

Dissonance has the function of propelling us forward to Zion as we learn to live and work in harmony.

Clare Dalton is a gay Latter-day Saint Seminary Teacher. She thinks of life not as a pass/fail test, but instead as a practice. What do I want to practice and get better at?

Clare pointed out that Jesus wanted the cup to pass. Many queer people, especially those in the closet or who haven't accepted themselves yet, want their queerness to pass. But as with Jesus, it's not something we can give away, it's meant for us.

Clare encouraged us not to say the prayer of a spectator, asking God to intervene in our life and do miracles that require nothing from me. "Please watch over...," "Please make this happen."

There's a difference between asking someone to make plans, and asking them to make plans with us. Be open and vulnerable with God and together make plans for your life. Be a team.

Interject ourselves into the prayer. "Please help me to...," "Please inspire me in how I can...," "Please show me..."

My favorite thing she said is, "Being queer is one of the threads that makes up the beautiful tapestry of me"

Steve Young is best known for having been a quarterback who led his team to victory in the Super Bowl. Less well known is that he speaks in support of queer people, especially in the LDS Church. In 2013, Steve and his wife Barbara spoke at the Affirmation Conference. By all reports, her talk was amazing and his was lukewarm.

After their remarks, Barbara was surrounded by attendees wanting to thank her and tell her what those words meant to them. Steve said it was interesting to not be the center of attention. But one by one, people would come over to him, mostly in their 20's, and explain that they're estranged from their dad or parents because they are queer. But their dad loves Steve Young and can we get a picture I can send my parents to show I'm okay? Maybe it'll help them see me because they will see you. Steve was crying as he shared these memories.

This is a world of entropy, everything declines in time, including our bodies. We face opposition. God designed life this way for our growth. Much of life's interactions are transactional, I do this for you in return for you doing this for me. Over time, those relationships break down as what I need from you changes.

Let's not have a transactional relationship with God. Too many people have the approach, "God, tell me what to do, and I'll do it," in the hopes that if I do everything perfectly that I'll be saved and exalted in heaven. This is a selfish approach, I will do what you require in order to get the thing I want.

Instead of a transactional relationship, have a meaningful relationship with God. God's work and glory is for us to be healed, to love, to grow. We can also change our relationships with others from transactional to seeking their healing and wellness. This requires long-suffering (patience), meekness and pure love. This will help us see ourselves as God sees us and that will be a great blessing. I need to see you for who you are, and I need to be seen.

God makes covenants with us. A covenant is not a "deal," this is not a transaction. A covenant is something we do together, it gives us a way forward and to be seen.

Oh, Steve Young said that if we see him at the airport or somewhere in public, call out "Green Arrow!" That's code to let him know we are queer Latter-day Saints. He wants to be in relationship with us, and by using this code, he can find us and be with us, even if just temporarily as he passes through the airport

At this point we broke into 3 different groups. I attended the workshops for LGBTQ+ people, and the following are from that session.

Gracee Purcell is a BYU student and president of RaYnbow Collective, a student-led organization in Provo, Utah that actively supports and provides resources for LGBTQ+ BYU students. Gracee was very busy this weekend. In addition to speaking at the Gather Conference on Friday, on Saturday the RaYnbow Collective was putting on the Back to School Pride event at Provo's Kiwanis Park.

Gracee spoke of chosen family and how she wants her biological family to be part of her chosen family. But when they choose to be homophobic and not see her for who she is but how they wish she was, it is difficult.

Will Edgel is a wellness coach for gay men to help them release the shame they feel about being gay. He said that studies show LGBTQ people are more likely to be lonely than the general population. LGBTQ people are less likely to be married or in contact with family. Marginalization, minority stress and social anxiety contributes to loneliness. Social involvement in the LGBTQ community helps remove stigma, shame and loneliness.

Will gave 5 tips for building community:

Know yourself - what lights you up?

Say "Yes" when invited. Saying "no" too many times will lead to fewer invitations.

Invite others to join you in activities you love.

Seek quality over quantity. Don't overlook the people already in your life. It takes time to truly be seen and understood.

Leverage tools and opportunities, including social media, to meet and interact with other.

There was a panel of about 8 individuals who represented different different parts of the queer experience, some were active in church and some had left, some in romantic relationships and some not. There were 3 statements made which resonated with me.

"Church doesn't really know what to do with me."

"God isn't offended by who I am."

"I equated being miserable with being righteous."

Austin Peterson is part of the Questions from the Closet podcast production team and shared that as a member of a bishopric, he sat in on disciplinary councils, and he'd always think, "might the next council be for me as a gay member?" That really struck a chord with me. As a stake executive secretary I don't participate in those councils, but I'm present to keep people from accidentally entering the room and to be there as the individual waits to be called in. In those moments I wonder if one day it will be me waiting on the flower-printed couch waiting to be called in.

Austin encouraged us to use our experiences as a queer person to see similarities with and to have empathy for other minority groups. We can see parallels in their experiences and ours.

Becky Higgins is in business helping others document and share their life stories. She encouraged us to live the story you want to tell. In other words, live with intent, think of what you'd like your life to be like and then live that way.

Becky said social media can be a place for good. You are good and so when you show up on social media, you are making it a better place. By sharing about our life, our struggles, and sharing our light, that's how we bring goodness to social media.

Becky encouraged us to focus on what our experiences have done for us, not what they've done to us.

Becky says that movement is what leads to revelation. Physical movement, writing, actions, these lead to possibilities. God can't direct a parked car, it needs to be in motion in order to go somewhere.

Anyway, I really admire how TXT’s individual dance styles are developing. (Note: This was written pre-Name Chapter, where they’ve shown even MORE growth. So proud)

Yeonjun’s is the most developed, of course. I think he has a lot of charisma and control in his style which makes him so great at both personal choreographies and covers. If you look at his Studio Choom and girl group covers and Tiktoks, he’s able to perfectly execute dances with his great level of body control, and embody them with the both the power of the original and his own flair. I’m sure he has a list of styles he wants to try, but for me I’d love to see more freestyles and for him to try modern dance

You could think that Soobin’s tall frame isn’t made for dancing, but he has mastered how to adapt his frame to be perfectly in sync with everyone else. He has a beautiful cleanliness to his dancing, never an angle or line of his body out of sync. And he uses his height to advantage, as it imbues his dance with power. Now adding how he’s a killer at facial expressions, and he kills performances like Can’t You See Me and the MAMA 2022 blidnfold dance. Precise, sensual, drawing you in with and keeping you there. Please please please, someone give him a sensual song to cover. It will kill me, but I’m okay with that.

For me, bc Beomgyu has the narrowest frame of the group, I often miss focusing on him in dances. But truly, Beomgyu’s strength is that his style involves so much emotion without losing sight of the choreography. He has precision in his form; his moves down to his fingers are never out of places. He has so much energy and emotion and is getting absolutely insane at facial expressions. You could strip away the rest, and Beomgyu’s NYE We Lost the Summer performance is still so beautiful precisely because he can embody so much emotion. He steals the show in the DNA cover bc he lets loose and gives it that Bangtan-inspired swagger. He captured everyone with the lighter mishap at MMA 2021. It’s a mistake to miss him because he is brilliant at telling the whole story in his dance alone. I really just want more solo performances from him so that I can focus more on him; I’d love something contemporary, but truly I want more power stuff like BTS covers  

Taehyun is a king of clean, sharp dancing. His lines and angles are clean. He can hit every beat. He has precision on a microscopic level and nimbleness to switch and alternate as fast as the music. There’s a reason why he’s often featured in the year-end performances; a lot of those performances have been so beat-focused, technically-difficult, and acing a challenge is where Taehyun shines. That’s also why I love his Opening Sequence solo because it’s out of his wheelhouse and he still excellently pulls off the emotion while never losing that perfect form. He’s a perfectionist and while I would love to see more techno-beat choreography from him, my secret wish is for him to dabble in ballet. 

Hueningkai’s duality will forever be one of my favorite things. Off-stage, he’s a tall, broad-shouldered boy who gives off this puppy energy, tumbling and rumbling around. But the minute you put him on stage, he’s like a rockstar. It’s like the world is rewritten and all that awkward boy stature is perfect for a dancer. Hueningkai has strong power to his dancing style bc he just so completely embodies stage presence. He is amazing at bringing the emotion to the performance; his NYE 2021, his Lovesong and Loser=Lover and GBGB performances are all testatments that he is so in tune with his emotions while never losing sight of putting on a fantastic show for the audience. I’d pay good money to see him do any styles of dance, but my deepest wish is for him to try some classical styles like ballet, jazz, tap dancing, ballroom, or Korean classical dance

2023 Retrospective

It’s hard to describe what happened this year. So much of it doesn’t seem real, and if it weren’t for me living through it and writing it down, I’d have assumed I dreamed it. Sometimes, you don’t realize the full scope of “life comes at you fast” until you’re living through it. And I don’t want to discuss major world events because fuck, there’s no way I could say anything meaningful about them.

If I were to give the short version, I’d call this a “silver lining” year for me. Lots of bad things happened, but good things came out of some of them, or at the very least, I had reason to keep going. I lost my job, my dog died, I got doxed, just to name a few. But I’ve also been using the time off work to improve my physical and mental health. I’ve made several new friends, some surprising friendships that I didn’t see coming. I’ve been privately chugging away at some writing projects that I can’t wait to show you all soon, once it’s time.

And if you were to tell me three years ago after the PS5 reveal stream that my entire online presence in 2023 would be swallowed up by Goodbye Volcano High, I’d find that hard to believe. But that’s kinda what happened. It’s a beautiful game that stole my heart and gave me new inspiration for stories and analysis. To all of the KO_OP staff, I'm so glad you didn't buckle against all the adversity you faced and gave us this heartfelt, unique, memorable game. I wish you all nothing but further success and accolades on your future projects, I can't wait to see what you've got coming up.

I want this new year to be one of positive change and growth. I’ve been applying to so many jobs and rebuilding my resume, and I’ve had some interviews lately that I hope to lead somewhere good. Plus there are aforementioned writing projects I’m hoping to share soon! And this April will mark my third year of being on HRT, which is kinda wild to think about. Being openly trans online can be scary, but I'm proud to be who I am.

I shouldn’t drag this on for longer than it needs to be, so I think I’ll call it here.
