Anyone who's like woah leaking the patreon stuff is too far be so for real right now. People like me funded Kittycorn while she was being deceptive about the nature of her work behind the scenes. Additionally, Kittycorn is literally associated with at least 3 pedophiles (one of which is pro irl incest and abused their sibling who Kittycorn attempted to silence).
I will never get the time I spent in regards to Sparklecare, nor my money back. Neither will anyone else who was mislead in regards to the kind of person Kittycorn was. Minors were also at a point staff on this comic who had no idea the shit Kittycorn was brewing.
It has been incredibly disappointing to further see Kittycorn go back on what she once presented (see the FAQ in regards to what fans can draw/any ask on the main tumblr in regards to the matter), and to see her further deflect refusing to take accountability. There are a lot of vulnerable people in her audience including other survivors. When a safe space of trust is cultivated with a creator who is straight up talking about how to lie to their audience... How do you think it feels for those survivors who kinned or related to Sly only to find out the creator wanted to make them a creepy incestuous rapist stalker. Or Doom who is now a groomer attracted to their goddamn child. How do you think it feels for those survivors to know the creator they looked up to and sought comfort in the work of is buddy buddy with the exact same kind of people who groomed and traumatized them.
If any of the former ZCP wants to do everyone a favour, leak the entire Sparklecare story (and whatever else). At this point I want everything to be scorched earth and hope nothing grows in its place. I hope Kittycorn leaves and doesn't come back to hurt more people.
I encourage anyone to save any of the stuff I've posted / share the archive link.
To be able to see the conclusion of what people cared about is the very least the fans have have been burned deserve.

Previous anon here! I would love to read how you did it. Im suprised you managed to did it in Google Docs. I thought you used a program similar to InDesign or programs that are more suitable for graphic design ANYWAY i am also curious how many chapters you used. Was it seven? Did you stop there because the length was convinient or because a story arc ended there? I am not really good at identifying where an arc begins and stops. okay bcgjkkcj THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
YAYYY I LOVE TALKING ABOUT ARTS AND CRAFTS!!
gonna put this in main tags as well this time so:

this is my bookbind of trod pt 1 :] by @bamsara which u can and SHOULD read here
ok so this first bit is how I made the pdf and then the next bit is how I turned it into signatures for binding. Then the last bit is splitting up chapters and stuff. If anyone has any advice or tips on what I could do differently (for free or v cheap haha) please let me know!! This is so fun I love learning and discussing and making things
first thing I did was grab a real book so I could take a look at where they put the title page, where they left the pages blank, etc
I then formatted the title and contents and stuff in docs by messing with font and position on the page (etc) until it was to my liking! THEN I realised I wanted an image on the very first page so I went back and put that in. I got to design it it was sooo fun
OH. I ALSO STUCK A SHAMURA QUOTE WHERE THE DEDICATION WOULD BE. HEHE
thennn I went and changed all the heading, title and normal text options for the doc so that they looked nice! I used times new roman size 16 :) but that might be a bit big for most people. I like bigger text
^^ that step was important so that when I started copy-pasting in the text it would all come out the right size automatically. also so that my chapter titles and notes pages looked consistent
next I downloaded trod from ao3 as a html file! I found it works better than pdf bc there aren’t any page breaks
I just copied and pasted trod in one chapter at a time and added in the notes and summary for every chapter where I wanted it and that worked pretty well for me
THEN SPELLCHECK. I didn’t want to do it automatically (docs had some horrible opinions sometimes. Also kept trying to erase bits of the writing style that made perfect sense and sound beautiful???) so I had to confirm every change which took a while but I think was worth it
lastly I added page numbers. They did not want to cooperate with me and I still do not understand the tiny fuckers, but I managed to get them in the middle of the page for book 2 so it looks less weird (hurrah). There’s a button for it
then I saved it as a pdf!
OK NEXT THING : SIGNATURES
this post is my bestest friend (link is to a tumblr post that was really helpful)
and this webpage is how I got a pdf of the signatures (it’s the same one linked in the post)
CHAPTERS:
yeah I split it into chunks of 7 chapters! Book 1 ends on the argument in the field bc a) it was getting wayyy too long and b) I want to lend it to my friends and that’s a delightful emotional cliffhanger. Book 2 (which is actually finished. I’ll try and post photos later today or something) ends after hekets release from purgatory which is I thiiiink another 7 chapters? Book 3 is gonna be a bit longer bc I want to do it up to the most recent chapter, which I was gonna leave out bc of length but then it came out and I went insane haha
OH in book 2 I did drop caps and title decoration which I designed in procreate and then imported into docs and moved around as imported photos. I’ll put a bunch of pictures at the end too
THANK U FOR ASKING!!! If there’s anything else u want to know then let me know!! :]

I think you are my favorite poet on tumblr. I've been off for a few years, but I came back and was pleasantly surprised to find you again. Bit of a silly logistics question--but, I noticed you post pictures of your poems; how do you find it? I am considering moving to this approach because I am beleaguered and weary from messing with html. I don't have as much control over line length, which can mess with cadence. And I want a different font, perhaps. I guess I was curious about your insight into something that is maybe insignificant, so feel free to decline to respond.
thank you 🤍 i really enjoy your writing too! yeah, messing with the formatting with text on here was annoying which is why i ended up posting them as pictures. i just save them as a PDF in word, then use photoshop (you can use photopea too which is online & free) and import the pdf into a new document that's sized like 3000x3000 and then just scale the poem to fit and crop accordingly, this way it's readable on desktop + mobile without having to click on the picture. it doesn't take that long to do. i've been using the font heldane text lately, i did use garamond in the past. there's websites like 1001fonts that lets you preview the font with whatever text you type in, so you can find something that you do like! hope this helps :)

bookbinding question: how did you format the pages so that they read in the correct order when stacked and folded into signatures?
Hi! I use Word to create my signatures and typeset them to read like a book. I followed amazing tutorials from Hana Bobb on TikTok - I'd really recommend looking at her content but here's the bare bones! (If you use other applications this probably won't be as helpful for you, I'm sorry!)
First things first, you need to get your word document set up. From the top ribbon, go to Layout, then select Margins > Custom Margins which will open a page setup popup window. Here are the page size, margins, and layout settings I use:
My margins are set based on US Letter sized paper. I find that they're not too big but allowed me to trim the foredges and don't eat up the text in the spine.
HOWEVER, if you're typesetting a really large fic, you're going to want to increase your side margins! For example, I am typesetting a tandem read of TRTTD/ATWT that is 900+ pages and my side margins are .65" to compensate for the deeper, rounded spine and the amount I'll have to trim off the foredge.
If you're uncertain if you like your margins, you can do test prints of the first signature to see how your margins end up looking.
Our page orientation is landscape because, although we want our individual pages to be portrait, each landscape page will have two portrait pages.
By setting the "multiple pages" setting to book fold, you will automatically print into signatures that you can then sew and glue into a book.
Sheets per booklet is really personal preference, just in mind that one sheet of paper is equal to FOUR book pages (two front and two back). So my 32 page booklets take 8 sheets of paper. Some people do 7, others do up to 10! It's harder to punch holes in 8+ pages of signatures, but easier to sew in my opinion.
From here, you can input your text! You can post the raw html from AO3 into the document which which bring over the text and general formatting, and you can format chapters, headings, title pages, etc. from there. This is a time consuming process but is really helpful when familiarizing yourself with how typesetting works. If you do go with this option, I'd again recommend Hana Bobb's detailed tutorials - she goes over incredible info for newbies and I wouldn't be half as good as I am without her guidance.
If you're not interested in deep diving on typesetting, you can do what I do now which is use a Word macro from the macro mommy herself - Blak Books Bindery.
She has some incredible macros which allow you to quickly and easily add text dividers, drop caps, and so much more to your typesets! The one I use the most is her "Raw-Text Formatting" macro which allows you to copy raw text directly from AO3 into the word document and turn it into a formatted typeset through computer magic. I usually just use this as a starting point and heavily adjust the aesthetics from there, but it saves so much time moving author notes, formatting chapters into sections, adding title and publishing pages, etc.
After your typeset is formatted how you want it, you can print it! I typically go into File > Print and select "Print to PDF."
This allows you to save the document as a PDF. You can print directly from Word but I haven't tried it since people say it really messes up the formatting.
Your finished typeset file should look something like this:
Just print this double sided with "flip on the short edge" selected, and start folding! Even if you're super confident about your typeset, I would highly recommend test printing your first signature on paper you don't care about. I've caught misaligned page numbers, margin issues, and other problems this way and saved myself the headache and reams of paper.
That's it! I hope this answered your question, I went probably went overboard but I'm not sure what knowledge you're working with so I wanted to be thorough. If you or anyone else has any other questions, feel free to reach out through asks or DMs!

A Personal Breakdown and Comparison of the Big Three of Fanfiction: Archive of Our Own, FanFiction.Net, and Wattpad
Considering the whole chaos with AO3 that happened recently, I wanted to write about this again since it's been on my to-do list. Disclaimer, I am trying to be objective, but some factors may still appear as personal opinions on the matter, so keep that in mind. This is a long one, so be prepared for an extensive read, I still tried to be concise but thorough. Experts on these sites, feel free to step in and offer your expertise as well on here. Also do correct me on any potential mistakes, this was a long one...
Archive of Our Own:
Pros:
Easy User Interface
Tagging system/fic filter system
Various options for site customization
Search by tag system, addition of major warning tags
Html support, picture and audio integration options
Copy and paste function
Zero advertisement
Engaging comment sections
Friendly UI, writer and reader friendly.
Has function to download fics for offline reading (formats: AWZ3, MOBI, PDF, EPUB, HTML)
Cons:
Tags can get cluttered
Search Bar doesn't work as well as search by tag filter
Rusty crossover format
Rusty character/relationship involvement sorting
Cannot upload documents
No personal DM function.
Can take awhile sorting through tags depending...
Archive of Our Own (AO3) has been my personal favorite of these websites. I've been using it for several years and despite dabbling in various other sites, this one is still my preference.
To start off strong, the pros for AO3 (obvious or not) is the interface. I personally find it extremely easy to use and all the options given are extremely nice for writers and readers alike. For writers, you can give yourself pseuds to help categorize your own fics, sort by the fandoms you write, add tags, allow co-writers, moderate and respond to comments, mass edit stories, and so on. While the site doesn't seem to have an option to upload a document, it does have options to include pictures, audio, and various other media, including links to other stories or videos. It also allows authors to directly respond to comments on their fics and allow for more discussion and engagement in the story (or fandom) between authors and readers (don't be afraid to leave comments!)
In terms of being a reader (and writer) one of my favorite functions by far is the bookmark, history, and subscribe functions. They are what they say, bookmarks can be a public or private tab that are various favorite fics you wanted to save for later or keep note of and not want to search for it again. History is a list of all the fics you've clicked on and it's private solely to you, no one can see your fic history, so if you don't want to bookmark, but remembered something you read, you can look for it in your history. Subscriptions are also a favorite if you don't want too many tabs, you subscribe to a story and you'll get an email every time that fic is updated with a new chapter. Additionally, fics can be downloaded for offline reading (most popular format it seems are epub and pdf).
Now then, onto the main event, tags. If there's one thing AO3 is known for, it's tags. All sorts of them.
The pros of the tags: easy filtering, searching, and organizing.
The best part about AO3 tags is how easy to filter fics are.
It's part of a writer's duty to tag what they have in their stories (and at least tag what we think is relevant if we have trouble thinking of specifics) and most uphold this duty, even at the most basic forms of relevant characters or themes or warnings.
AO3 has an extremely well made filter system (in my opinion), and I've been making good use of it in recent days. If you want stories with a specific character or genre, or theme, use the "Include" function and type in those relevant tags.
If you want to exclude fics specifically, you can "Exclude" the relevant tags and the system should exclude all works with those tags, ratings, or themes, in them from your search. If there is an issue with it, my only gripe is that there aren't any "filter preferences/presets" for the site. By that I mean if you click on a new character tag, you need to re add all of your filters to get your specific stories again unless you're well adept at using the back button (which honestly most people are adept at) and re-organizing your filters there, but it's an extremely minor issue that doesn't really affect the experience.
Now then, the cons of the site. There aren't many, but there are a few. Which again, involves the tags. AO3's extensive list of relevant tags for various fandoms is a blessing as it is a curse. One such factor is the idea of crossovers. Crossovers may be easy for other series, but for series that have various media forms for the same fandom, they end up having different fandom tags.
For example, my fic "Scarlet Eyes in the Academy" had a total of 5 fandom tags, even though it's only a crossover between two series. This is because both have different media that have their own tags, My Next Life as a Villainess (Anime)/(Light Novel)/(Manga), and Moriarty the Patriot (Anime)/(Manga)
The reason why a lot of authors tag all various media forms for a series is simply so the most people can see it, regardless of which medium tag they defaulted to. Especially if the mediums don't have many differences to the series.
I can understand why some series need separate tags to differentiate the medium, but in the long run (especially if the medium doesn't have many unique changes to the canon), it's various tags for the same series and since linking more than one fandom tags will equate to a crossover, trying to find an actual crossover fic is a challenge (some fandoms don't really apply since they don't have multiple tags, such as Genshin Impact and Red vs Blue).
On another point, which is mainly the character tags. This is a common issue I see from time to time, but like the crossover aspect, is a small issue compared to the pros of the site. The thing with the character tags (or relationship tags) is that writers can add them, even if the story is not focusing on them. They appear in the story, but how much focus is on that character/relationship is in the eyes of the beholder (at the whim of a writer). It's not a major issue, but one that I see from time to time when comparing/analyzing fic sites.
But if there's a plus to the character tags, it helps filter through the fandom medium tags. As it will link all the fics that have the character regardless of fandom tags.
Other Notes: unlike other sites, AO3 doesn't have direct DMs and is unable to do document uploads, but even without those two things, it's a wonderful site for fanfiction. It also allows fic downloading for offline reading (just don't do any fic reposting without author's consent, that's just rude).
In conclusion: AO3 has a lot of benefits and has a relatively friendly UI for writers and readers alike. The tag system overall is extremely well done to help narrow down your fic search. I consider it to be the best of the three. The only downside is that it's not the best when looking for crossovers and fics for specific characters, themes, or pairings can get lost among the tags. There are also many guides available on this site in regards to the many functions of AO3.
Fanfiction.net :
This one, I think, sparks a certain level of nostalgia in many of us (especially those a bit younger in age). It was one of the first fanfiction sites to be made "mainstream" (i.e. the most prevalent option when fanfiction is searched for). But it has seen better days…
Pros:
Private DMs
Document uploads
Major character tags
Main genre tags
Easy crossover functionality
Good app, easy UI.
Cons:
Annoying/Invasive ad placement
No option for warning tags
Cannot interact openly with comments
No easy pic support (if any, for inside the fic itself)
Fics can be easily reported even for small reasons
The copy and paste function is extremely broken.
Okay, once again, starting strong with the pros. Ff.net has been a site that is prevalent for older fandoms. It has a nice filter system to go by genre, characters, and ratings and the UI is quite easy to use (the more nuanced filter system also makes it easier for searching compared to AO3's more… fic tag cocktail mixing experience). The site allows for uploading word documents to upload fics (which is a double edge sword as their copy and paste function is extremely wonky and broken last I checked). It also allows for checking traffic on a fic, which I find is a very fun statistic to look at every now and then.
It also allows for private DMs within the site itself so if authors want to talk, there's no need to rely on an external DM site/application (Discord, Tumblr, Reddit, etc).
The biggest pro for FF.net is it's crossover archive (specifically when you go into a ff.net fandom archive and click on crossovers). It sorts out all the crossover fandoms by fic count and it is easy to look for a specific fandom crossover if it exists.
I think that roughly covers all the pros, now, the cons. The main issue I have with FF.net is… the ad placements.
If I could include the horrified duh duh duuuuh! Sound effect I would.
On mobile it's even worse, anyone recall the days when the ads were those odd little boxes next to the review box at the bottom of the chapter? I miss those days.
However, while the ads have been an issue, I think the biggest issue is with how content is moderated on the site and reporting works. I personally haven't had bad experiences with the site, but I've seen other authors apparently get their fics taken off the site due to reports (despite the fact the works themselves not having anything wrong). The famous RWBY reacts to RvB fic (React Watch Believe Yikes) was taken down because of copyright reasons despite the fact they clearly stated that they got permission to use the RvB transcripts in the fic (that fic is now on AO3). I haven't heard much beyond that, so do fill in what I missed if this issue had gotten worse or better over the years.
The other con for FF.net is interaction, while the site allows for private DMs, it doesn't allow public interaction with comments. Authors can still reply, but it's then taken into a private DM chain specifically between the author and the specific commenter. Perhaps it's a minor issue, but it's one that should be brought up.
And also, last I checked, the DMs are supposed to send you an email notification everytime someone DMs you, but it's been wonky for awhile and straight up broken at points.
And lastly, while the more succinct filter system is fine, it does so at the consequence of not letting additional tags be shown. So ratings and genre can be filtered, but nothing more. It doesn't help that the summary boxes are short either, so authors either have to make shorter summaries to put important warnings, or omit the warnings so the full summary can be in place. I also believe this lack of tagging is another reason why reporting fics seems to be an issue there.
In conclusion, FF.net is a fine site, it's easy to use, perfect for crossovers, allows DMs and has fun statistics. However, you should probably keep anything "explicit" pretty mild, or proceed with caution. I learned the terms lemons and limes from somewhere after all.
Wattpad:
Cracks knuckles, okay, this one. I used this one the least, but I do have some thoughts on it (Wattpad experts, feel free to add onto this if you'd like).
Pros:
Can comment on specific paragraphs
Easy picture integration
Decent chapter/book format
Decent story saving/favorite book
Okay UI
Cons:
Bad tag filters
Hard search function
Ads can be a bit annoying.
As you can see, I have an issue when it comes to filtering. Both Ao3 and FF.net have good filtering/tagging systems. While Wattpad does have a filter/tag system, I think it leaves a lot to be desired.
Okay, once again, starting with the pros. I think my favorite feature when it comes to Wattpad is the option to comment on specific paragraphs rather than just the whole chapter/story. I dunno, I find it fun as a reader (and as a writer) to see if people had specific thoughts on specific passages.
Secondly, the writer UI is decent and quite friendly once you get the hang of it. You can start a "book" and update it as you see fit. Although the way to add/update/edit an ongoing book is a bit more cumbersome than AO3 or FF.net…
Lastly, the picture integration for Wattpad is pretty nice, allowing easy insertion of images directly into the passage or on a "chapter banner" at the beginning of the chapter.
That's pretty much it for the major pros, and onto the cons. Which is surprisingly not many (as least that I've experienced), but those few in number make up for a lot in experience.
So, the cons, which is once again, the tagging. It always rolls back to that aspect/function. The tagging for Wattpad is honestly quite messy. Not only can several tags for the same thing exist, but they exist because the tags themselves (like in Tumblr) become different tags depending on how they're formatted (ex. "xreader", "x reader", "characterxreader", are three separate tags), so filtering out tags can be quite an issue. Not to mention more work on the author's part to add literally every iteration of a tag/phrase/pairing to make sure it appears where it's supposed to appear.
The other issue from what I can see rn actually is that a guest user (someone not logged into an account) cannot do manual searches on the site, at least on mobile. You can only search externally on the web, which is technically a minor issue, but an issue nonetheless.

Additionally, readers can't see all the relevant tags when browsing through stories until they click on it and see the summary. Again, a minor issue, but an issue all the same that should be brought up.
Also, from what I heard, there's supposedly paywalls on the site now. Looking into it, Wattpad does seem to have a paid subscription service. One feature of that service is "paid stories". I assume this only attributes to original works (since fanfiction will be in hot water otherwise). Additionally, the paid subscription gives access to offline downloading and site customization (for which AO3 has for free), it also says it offers options for "early access to subscribers" which I assume again is for original stories and functions like a creator's Patreon account. The subscription also allows for ad free viewing of stories.

In conclusion, Wattpad isn't nearly as chaotic as I last remember, but it still seems leagues behind the tagging and UI of AO3 and FF.net. The writer's UI for posting stories is fine and the picture integration in combination with paragraph comments is a fun feature. The fact it's asking for subscriptions for functions that the other two provide also knocks it down a peg. It's a fine site, but definitely not the most ideal for fanfiction. Especially as it seems to shift more to original stories than fanfiction. Finally, unlike AO3 and FF.net, Wattpad doesn't really have anything exclusive to its site that puts it above the rest (unless you count the comment on specific paragraphs bit).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In conclusion: Everyone has their favorite sites for fanfiction. All of them have their pros and cons and for which one is "the best" it boils down to what you're looking for in your fanfiction stories.
Archive of Our Own: Seems to be the mainstay for newer fandoms, perfect for creating your own fic viewing experiences and filtering, allows for website customization skins, more interaction between author and readers, allows fic downloads for offline reading.
Fanfiction.Net: The home to older fandoms, good for a more casual browse, allows private DMs, perfect for looking for crossovers, just beware of the ads.
Wattpad: An okay site, interface takes a bit getting used to, but filtering is not as good as the others, ads are present but not as much as FF.net, requires subscription to remove ads and allow customization. It also seems more curated to original works than fanfics.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that concludes my analysis of what I consider "The Big Three" of the fanfiction world. Shall I do other sites as well? Did this help in regards to looking at sites? Experts in any of the three mentioned, do add your own notes to correct or add to any of the points I made. I primarily use AO3 so I may have missed some things for the other two.
Either way, I hope you enjoyed this surprisingly long essay. Hope you enjoyed ;)
#archive of our own#fanfiction.net#wattpad#fandom#writers#ao3#ffnet#ff.net#wattpad fanfiction#wattpad stuff#ao3 feed#tl:dr ao3 is perfect for sorting fics of the same fandom#fanfiction.net is perfect for crossovers#wattpad isn't bad but doesn't do anything overtly unique compared to the other two#reposting because of tag issues...

So! In light of google docs being revealed as a data farm for google’s AI, I promised my discord friends I’d report back to them on the software, Scrivener! I have too much to say even for Nitro to handle it and I figure some of my Tumblr peeps would also find this interesting so this is where it’s going.
Now, it’s a pretty hefty program in terms of functions and features but it includes a full, in depth tutorial. So rather than rehash all that, I’m gonna give you the broad strokes of what makes Scrivener better than other paid programs. (at least in my opinion)
It’s project based rather than document based.
"Dee,” I hear you ask, “what do you mean by project based?” You know how you normally have to make a folder for your project, then many separate documents within said folder for chapters, references, character profiles, world building, etc. that you have to open individually to work on?
Scrivener said “nah, we’re gonna do all that for you”. You can have multiple documents, character cards, research notes, whatever you want within a single open project window so you can freely click through them.
So instead of this:
You get this!
You can switch between documents in seconds and it also offers a side by side view so you can have your outline, a reference article, etc. visible while you’re writing.
Good Templates!
When opening a new project, you get this menu:
Each category has multiple sub options (Fiction has novel, novel with parts and short story. Scriptwriting has drama, stage play, etc.) and what I love most about them is that they format everything for you to cater to that kind of project! You can also choose a blank template, play with the formatting until you’re happy with it, then save all those settings as a custom template.
The Compile Feature!!!
This is invaluable!!! Particularly if you’re writing original content and are looking into traditional or self publishing. Once you have your finished manuscript, the compile feature will format that shit FOR you! You make your save file selection (print, PDF, .html, .epub, etc), choose your final document format and what sections you want included/excluded in the final document.
Click Compile and you’ll have a fully formatted final document ready for submission!
30 Day Free Trial
And I mean ACTUALLY free! They never ask for your card info, name, or even email address to download the trial version. You get 30 days to kick the tires, take it for a spin around the block, push all the buttons. If you do decide you love it and need it in your life, I have more good news for you!
NO SUBSCRIPTION BULLSHIT!!!!
It’s a one-time-purchase of $59.99 USD, you download the software and it’s yours! You own it! That’s it!
I can’t emphasize enough that I have just barely scratched the surface here. There’s so many features and tools to play with that I haven’t even explored myself yet. I absolutely love it, fuck google and if you’re interested in giving Scrivener a whirl, you can get the free trial here.

@vovertherainbow Here you go! Instructions (as I followed them on my Windows 11 PC) once you've followed nianeyna's installation instructions for Python and the ao3downloader, you've extracted the downloaded zip file, etc.:
BEFORE YOU START: I highly recommend moving the entire unzipped ao3downloader folder to whatever location you want your fics to live in. I made my life exponentially harder by moving all my downloaded files from the subfolder where they auto-download to my designated folder for saving favorite fanfics.
Once you have the entire unzipped folder where you want it, click into the folder. For me, it had a subfolder of the same name: ao3downloader-main. If so, click into this as well. You should see a list of folders, and some files. You want the file called ao3downloader.cmd, NOT the ao3downloader.py file. Open the ao3downloader.cmd file. This will open a Windows Command Prompt window.
In your browser, navigate to the page you want to download links from. This could be your bookmarks page, your history, your own works, the works page of a specific author, collection, series, etc. Find the page you want, and copy the link.
In the command prompt, if it's working properly you'll see a bunch of text scroll by, ending with "please enter your choice, or 'q' to quit:" Look just above that and you will see a list of options, each assigned a letter. To select an option, just type the letter and hit enter. For example, the one I use most is "a: download from ao3 link." So I just type a and hit enter.
Next it will ask you your download type. The options are AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and HTML. I chose PDF, so I just typed PDF and hit enter (it's case sensitive, so do make the choice all caps).
It will then ask if you're done entering file types, or would like to designate another (this is for if you want to download in multiple formats). Type y for yes or n for no, and hit enter.
Next, it will ask you if you want to get works from all encountered series links. Basically, this means if there is a linked work on the page you're downloading from that is part of a series, it will download ALL works in that series. I usually pick yes, but you don't have to.
At last, it will ask for the link you want to download from. Take that link you copied, paste it in, and hit enter. IMPORTANT TIP: If you want an author's works, DO NOT go to their dashboard. Go to their Works page. For my example, I copied the link to the first page of my bookmarks.
Next, it will ask you to enter the page number you want to stop on. I use this because of the aforementioned folder snafu, but you don't have to if you keep all the downloaded works in the automatic folder. If you want to download all pages, enter 0. For these purposes, I entered 2.
Next it will ask if you want to download embedded images in the works. These will be saved to a separate folder. I chose y for yes. Type y or n and hit enter.
Next it will ask if you want to log into ao3. This is ONLY needed if you want to download works that are archive-locked (only visible to logged-in users). Type y for yes or n for no and hit enter. Obligatory disclaimer for all risks of providing your username and password to third party applications.
If you type n, it will begin downloading your works and provide updates as it moves through the pages.
If you type y, it will ask for your username. Type it in and hit enter.
Next it will ask for your password. Type it and hit enter. The downloader will begin downloading your works and provide updates as it moves through the pages.
That's the basic walkthrough of the primary function. There are other options in that first list! I haven't explored them all. But my basic tips are: read the prompts, follow any instructions about case-sensitivity carefully, and only type EXACTLY what they're asking for (i.e. if they ask for y type y, not Y or Yes or yes or y with a space after it).
I hope this helps! If you have any other questions or run into issues, nianeyna does have a pretty comprehensive guide on that linked page and you can probably find the info there! If you really get stuck and nothing on that page is helping you, send me an ask and I'll see if I can help you out or find the answers for you.
(Note: I am not affiliated with nianeyna nor do I know them, I just love AO3, use this downloader a lot, and have IT support experience.)
If any one of my posts is to break containment, make it this one.
Before January 2025, download your favorite fics, especially those with smut or queer content.
If Project 2025 goes into effect (which it very likely will now that we have three red branches of government in the US), they may attempt to restrict the use/sharing of media on sites like ao3.
This particularly applies to fics with smut or any type of queer content, because the official Project 2025 document states, "Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children, for instance... has no claim to First Amendment protection... Pornography should be outlawed."
Now, I don't expect ao3 to disappear or go anywhere without a fight, but it's best to be on the safe side these days.
To download your favorite fics:
Go to archiveofourown.org and open the fic you want to download.
At the top right corner, to the right of the 'subscribe' button, is a button that says 'download'. Click it.
A drop-down menu will give you the option to choose the format of your download. Choose your preferred format (.epub and .pdf are my personal favorites -- .epub lets you open a fic in the apple books app and .pdf is compatible with like every device and program out there).
When you click the button for your preferred format, a pop-up window appears confirming your choices. The title of the document will default to the title of the fic, so be aware of that and consider changing conspicuous titles to something ignorable, especially if you share the computer.
You're done! Now do this with all your favorite fics!
Stay safe out there, your favorite characters are rooting for you <3

Speeding up requests with Rust
I'm working on an application in Ruby on Rails that saves user data and processes it into documents. This is very common in B2B software. Consumer software can keep data in the format most convenient for the developers, where it can be rendered onto pages. B2B software often replaces an existing process and needs to produce a document that looks and feels like the old process, but is faster for the worker to produce.
Ruby on Rails is built for the typical consumer website. It's probably the fastest way to get a CRUD app from zero to live. Rails also likes a monolith. You keep all your logic in your controllers, which react to user actions.
However, Ruby is not particularly fast. That's normally okay for most cases, as Rails is well-written and can render a page fairly quickly.
So you need a strong case to add a separate service. Here's my B2B case:
Users want to download a document that will be printed and posted to the wall
The document is typically well-structured, so some print-specific CSS won't suddenly make the HTML page fit to print.
These documents are posted in paper and sent in email.
Suddenly PDFs are looking pretty good. They are displayed consistently on all devices and don't need a special license to view with consistency (unlike DOCX, which often displays oddly in LibreOffice or a native viewer).
Now, PDFs bring their own problems:
We need a library to produce them. (Does Ruby have such a library?)
They take a discrete amount of time to process and save.
They need to be produced quickly after "Publish" is pressed, but...
They can't hold up user actions (such as page loads) while being processed.
It is fairly simple to set up asynchronous actions that queue up and process over time, so that's an exercise left for the reader.
But here are a couple drawbacks:
We're using up precious processing time making PDFs that could be used fulfilling user CRUD requests.
Ruby's dynamic typing and wimpy type system are great for quickly spinning up applications, but not great for ensuring integrity and avoiding crashes
Making PDFs takes only data in and produces a product - it doesn't have to keep track of state like a web app. Wouldn't a functional approach be cleaner and easier to reason about?
With all this in mind, it seems obvious that PDF production can move to a separate service, and since we're doing this over HTTPS anyway, even a service that's not written in ruby!
With rust's Tokio, it's easy to create short-lived jobs that take only input, send back output, and keep no state. A lack of global state is actually the easiest way to write a tokio app!
There's obviously a lot more to the actual execution, but I'm happy to report that the advantages of a compiled application and strong typing leads to very fast request fulfillment! Every document takes less than 1ms to complete on a very wimpy Raspberry Pi 5. Even if I failed to make document processing async, users would experience more lag from network issues than document processing after pressing the Publish button.
The "mu" means millionth, by the way.
Of course, this took planning and solid logic. No programming language can save you from a bad algorithm or costly calculations. But the rust service is easy to test, easy to reason about, and has strong guarantees thanks to rust's philosophy and tools.
Thanks to a simple retry queue, upgrading this service is also fast with almost no downtime. Stopping the old version and starting the new version takes the service down for about ten seconds. Tokio is lightweight so the service is back up almost instantly. This is fast enough that the retry queue doesn't flinch. Three retries and a dead-letter queue, plus an admin tool for DLQ alerts and manual reruns means I don't have to think about deployment as a downtime issue.
Ruby is strong for the application, rust is strong for the document queue. All tools for their appropriate purpose.

THE JEWISH TERRORISM AND GENOCIDE OF PALESTINIANS IN THE OCCUPIED HOLY LAND SINCE 1948 and STILL CONTINUING TODAY BY KILLING HELPLESS AND INNOCENT CHILDREN, WOMEN, AND OLD PEOPLE, GOD FORBID, AMEN.
