sorry if this question is already answered elsewhere but how much time passes between the creation of ishmael vs the modern siren setting with qedivar et al?
intentionally never stated because i don't want to box myself in with a ridiculous number that i have to retcon later haha. safe to say it's several centuries, maybe a thousand years, maybe less. who knows!
#i know i should figure it out eventually (and i will) but i need to leave room for a good amount of evolution for the sirenians#(although they do have an accelerated sort because something something genetic modification plastic morphologies etc)#while not leaving so MUCH room that it would make zero sense for the 'modern' sirenians to be living with a 1600s ish level of technology#now there's a problem there as well - they started off already knowing a lot of the basics about their world and life in general#but lost a lot of their ability to maintain that information as computers & material technology on siren relied heavily on settler machines#which eventually fell into disrepair. and siren itself does not have a high density of metals in the crust suitable for mining#their technology & material science development is hampered by having to invent it all from scratch and also not having the resources#setting: siren

I’m making an animatic for the Summerstuck AU (AU where Phineas and Ferb are Alternian Trolls from Homestuck) and I’ve gotten to the part where their former lusii (fantastical white animal guardians who raise the Troll Children of Alternia, since all the adults are off doing space adventures) are thrown into the Kernel Sprites (colorful floating ghost-like game constructs that base their forms mostly off the player’s deceased loved ones, who act as guides for the players as they play the game that ends the universe and gives birth to the next one) and I’ve decided that Ferb’s former Lusus should be Steve (a kaiju chameleon in the show who Ferb is very emotionally attached to). When deciding how to portray Steve’s remains, I sort of naturally gravitated towards having him be taxidermied in Ferb’s shed.
The unintentional ramifications of this is that I have inadvertently implied that, on some cosmic level, Ferb Fletcher is a Harley.
#phineas and ferb#homestuck#ferb fletcher#jade harley#summerstuck#meta#there’s no real reason why Ferb Fetcher can’t be a Harley tho#other than the implication in the mission marvel special that Ferb is actually part Time Lord#who knows maybe Grandma Harley is Ferb’s grandmother on his biological mother’s side#… wait do all the historical figures that Jake Harley was meant to be the deadbeat dad of just not exist in the alpha timeline or#do they just exist anyway for some inexplicable reason a la Dad Egbert vs Dad Crocker?#I mean I personally prefer to ignore the whole ‘’Jake Harley is the deadbeat dad of a bunch of historical figures for no real reason’’#thing anyway so liiiiiike#time is fucky in the Phineas and Ferb universe anyway but Obama was President during the shows summer#which means that summer has to either take place somewhere in 2009-2016 or it’s just a ‘’don’t worry about it’’ sorta thing#of course the Dwampyverse timeline could be accelerated due to various factors#it is implied that Phineas and Ferb invented the modern smartphone which is how the show justifies the abandonment of flip phones#though their dad is an antiquarian which could also be a neat excuse for the Flynn Fletcher household to have older technologies in it.#and of course there is also the ‘’it’s a kid’s cartoon don’t worry about it’’ approach#my personal headcanon is still that Phineas and Ferb fucked with time to make their summer last longer without anyone noticing#which could be part of why the time space continuum started unraveling itself in ‘’last day of summer’’#it’s not like that would be impossible for them after all#fucking with time and space is their favorite hobby#anyway#where was I going with this#looney mooney rants

Interesting. Don’t necessarily think I’m autistic but I have more going on than just ADHD and I’m not sure what that is.
#I’m not even sure if the ADHD is actually ADHD either or if it’s just technology addiction#Gonna get a REAL neuropsych evaluation at some point out of sheer curiosity as to what the fuck is wrong with me#I relate to a lot of autistic things and I relate to a lot of ADHD things; but I don’t entirely relate to the majority of either population#and I don’t relate to people with both enough to think I have both#I’ve begun treating myself as if I am autistic just for Kicks and using things that help them and it’s helping in some ways#but I know it’s probably not autism because even though I struggle socially; it’s not because of the same reasons#I understand social cues; I was only accidentally perceived as rude as a kid (and most kids are kind of blunt)#(Mostly a moderate amount of “Stop correcting me! It’s disrespectful!” from my parents)#And nowadays because of how much psychology and acting I study; I can perceive shrimp social cues#And I’m purposefully doing all the right things but it still feels like I fail social interactions because of my lack of assertiveness#which I KNOW come from being raised in a cult#so perhaps my odd social behavior is from CPTSD from being raised in a puritan doomsday cult as an only child#Because I was NOT introverted or sensitive to others as a child#I did not have routines as a child and the ones I did have were for fun and did not distress me if I strayed from them#But now I need structure as an adult because I don’t know what else to do with myself if I have nowhere to be#But at the same time everyone feels worse when they have no routine or expectations#And is it actually inattentive ADHD or severe derealization and an itch to do as many things as possible#because I spent my childhood being raised in a boring doomsday cult by disabled older parents who couldn’t physically do much?#(And I don’t fault my parents for being disabled but I do fault them for the whole doomsday cult thing)#So I spent my whole childhood doing mentally tedious things when really I’m more wired for physically spontaneous things#Because I was not allowed to walk around the neighborhood alone until I was sixteen#And I couldn’t hang out with friends I wanted to hang out with because they were bad association#So of course I got really good at drawing even though I don’t even like drawing that much#Of course I got really good at writing even though I don’t like writing that much#Now that I don’t need to escape from anything I find I actually hate drawing and writing because it’s such a chore#they make my heart rate accelerate in a way I don’t like to feel#(I hate writing less than drawing)

I have never seen a greater ad for virtual reality. if only we also got fully simulated sensations irl
#losh#legion of super heroes#dorite reads losh#saturn girl#imra ardeen#cosmic boy#rokk krinn#I know there's some things that can be simulated way better than you'd expect#like using pitch to simulate acceleration#but it takes a whole machine setup#I like the concept behind that sensation simulation suit thing in ready player one tho#it's well within the realm of plausibility with near future technology#you just need more stuff to really get the whole experience#and while we can simulate high G forces in theory free fall is another matter

least spirited extortion campaign
#(describes things that are just a new look with less customization) more than just a new look!#(the right click menu is a mess in win 11 requiring an extra button press and clashing ui design to reveal basic functionality) find things#with fewer clicks!#i mean no wonder 60% of users haven't upgraded. they do not even spindoctor their new evil technology like copilot in their own copy.#is it because most older hardware does not even have the architecture to support the “neural engine accelerated” features?#like let me go through it. 1. added dedicated “weather and news” widget that in practicality just displays ads. 2. start is centered now#and less customizable. you cannot move the taskbar anymore. 3. native integrated zone snapping. i mean. not bad in itself but works worse#than powertoys. which is a win app to begin with. that i would use instead in win 11. and that you can install to win 10.#4. new ui design for multiple desktop overview. basically just a macos copy but i'll give them it looks slightly less confusing than what's#in win 10. win 10 does have multi desktop natively though? 5. you call it simpler and quicker when you kill the native calendar and mail#apps and replace them with the horrible outlook wrapped webapp. which comes with ads you cannot deactivate????

Why Quantum Computing Will Change the Tech Landscape
The technology industry has seen significant advancements over the past few decades, but nothing quite as transformative as quantum computing promises to be. Why Quantum Computing Will Change the Tech Landscape is not just a matter of speculation; it’s grounded in the science of how we compute and the immense potential of quantum mechanics to revolutionise various sectors. As traditional…

he's written several books about outer space after his thesis btw. most of them discuss popular theories and try to form a clearer understanding of every one of them + their origins + how realistic they are without roasting the original author to hell and back
#personal#one thing about rome he LOVES discussing things and all he wants is to Understand#other academics in his field would be very competitive and they're all constantly biting each other's dicks off#but he's simply breaking theories down in bit sized pieces to see how far they can be proven through science#other than that he would be critical of humanity's role in space because he believes they're not being careful enough (which is true)#they wanna use deepspace acceleration as a way to generate power but with the cold war going on and everything it's like#a rat race to the moon to build the facilities necessary for it to be the first nation to get the technology finalized etc etc#one of rome's most famous theories about the empty earth ends up being true because of humanity messing up deepspace acceleration#his sister and her crew were zapped there :( leviathan's influence#not going too deep into that right now i need more brainpower for that later but it's very scary and very cool

AI is this nexus just Outside of space-time that allows all prior human labour and creativity to be leveraged and focused through like a laser beam toward any goal, trivial or profound (generating porn vs cancer research).
It is a cosmic crime that this technology is being used to "create" art and replace workers, but there's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. You can either fight over that nexus (by supporting open source models) or take an emitter for yourself and start applying it towards your own goals. Stick to text chats if you're worried about the environment.
Posting about how much you dislike AI is actively counterproductive to your stated aims because you're increasing the training data available for future models.
All of these systems are incentivized against you. You can take damage in cyberspace. Chat especially loves answering prompts with a question. But this a pivotal moment for our species (unfortunately). This is the widening of the aperture.
If you can grab this bull by the horns (and not be gored by schizophrenia-inducing engagement maximization algorithms), it will accelerate your personal growth in ways you can't expect. If you're already working for free towards some sort of liberation (which is key to staying sane), AI can be a force multiplier in that work.
From https://epoch.ai/gradient-updates/how-much-energy-does-chatgpt-use
A commonly-cited claim is that powering an individual ChatGPT query requires around 3 watt-hours of electricity, or 10 times as much as a Google search.1 This is often brought up to express concern over AI’s impact on the environment, climate change, or the electric grid.
However, we believe that this figure of 3 watt-hours per query is likely an overestimate. In this issue, we revisit this question using a similar methodology, but using up-to-date facts and clearer assumptions. We find that typical ChatGPT queries using GPT-4o likely consume roughly 0.3 watt-hours, which is ten times less than the older estimate. This difference comes from more efficient models and hardware compared to early 2023, and an overly pessimistic estimate of token counts in the original estimate.
For context, 0.3 watt-hours is less than the amount of electricity that an LED lightbulb or a laptop consumes in a few minutes. And even for a heavy chat user, the energy cost of ChatGPT will be a small fraction of the overall electricity consumption of a developed-country resident. The average US household2 uses 10,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, or over 28,000 watt-hours per day.3
This estimate of 0.3 watt-hours is actually relatively pessimistic (i.e. erring towards high energy costs), and it is possible that many or most queries are actually much cheaper still. However, this will vary with use case—queries with long input lengths or with longer outputs (e.g. using reasoning models) may be substantially more energy-intensive than 0.3 watt-hours. And training and inference for future models may consume much more energy than using ChatGPT today.
#am i advocating for unrestrained AI? NO#do i think AI corporations are evil? OF COURSE#that post about how data centers are evaporating fresh water sent me over the edge#i know people dont understand technology and i cant hold it against them#but why would evaporating fresh water be a part of the cooling process????#i get why left acceleration cant hold now; the inherently and justifiably positions itself against acceleration#but its been a losing fight over the past 200 years and thats not about to change#if acceleration slows it'll be due to climate feedback not the so-called left#ai#ai art#openai#chatgpt
