eSIM statt Roaming

Im August 2023 will ich für ein paar Tage eine Freundin in der Schweiz besuchen. Da ich dort auch außerhalb des Freundinnen-WLANs online sein möchte und mein Mobilfunkanbieter horrende Beträge für Datenroaming verlangt, überlege ich, ob sich wohl eine Schweizer Prepaid-Karte lohnt. Mir fällt ein, dass ich in meinem Handy eine physische SIM-Karte habe, es aber zusätzlich eSIMs unterstützt. Ich könnte also vielleicht schon von zuhause aus eine solche kaufen, sodass sie gleich bei der Einreise zur Verfügung steht. Bei einer Internetrecherche stoße ich jedoch auf ein mir bisher unbekanntes Konzept: Zahlreiche internationale Anbieter haben sich auf den Verkauf von eSIMs spezialisiert, die ausschließlich Datenvolumen für genau diesen Fall bieten. Es gibt Optionen für einzelne Länder oder gleich ganze Regionen. Die Preise sind meist gestaffelt nach verfügbarem Volumen und Gültigkeitsdauer (z. B. 5GB, die innerhalb vom 10 Tagen aufgebraucht werden können). Da es sich nicht um die großen Mobilfunkanbieter handelt, sondern um Unternehmen, von denen ich noch nie gehört habe, bin ich ein bisschen misstrauisch. Ich verlasse mich aber auch die Empfehlung auf einer Reiseberater-Seite. Sollte es nicht funktionieren, wäre das natürlich ärgerlich, aber finanziell im verkraftbaren Rahmen.

Nach dem Kauf bekomme ich innerhalb weniger Minuten einen QR-Code per E-Mail zugeschickt. Diesen scanne ich mit dem Handy ein, wodurch die eSIM automatisch eingerichtet wird. Bei der Einreise in die Schweiz muss ich nur noch einstellen, dass diese für mobile Daten verwendet wird. Ich muss also meine deutsche Handynummer für Telefonie und SMS nicht deaktivieren. Mein Misstrauen erweist sich als unbegründet: Ich merke keinen Unterschied zu meiner üblichen Handynutzung. Das Einzige, was mich stört, ist, dass ich keinen Überblick über die verwendeten bzw. noch verfügbaren Daten habe. Ich gehe aber davon aus, dass 10GB für einen viertägigen Urlaub, in dem ich oft im WLAN der Freundin sein werde, mehr als ausreichend sein sollten. Bei der Ausreise stelle ich den Datenempfang einfach wieder auf die deutsche SIM-Karte um.

Im Dezember desselben Jahres reise ich in die Türkei. Aufgrund meiner guten Erfahrung möchte ich wieder eine eSIM kaufen, schaue mich aber nach anderen Anbietern um, die vielleicht günstiger sind oder bei denen man Überblick über die Datennutzung erhält. Die Preise sind bei allen Anbietern ähnlich, es gibt aber solche, die eine App anbieten, über die man den Verbrauch überwachen und bei Bedarf direkt zusätzliches Volumen hinzubuchen kann. Außerdem stoße ich auf einen Anbieter, der tagesbasierte Tarife mit unbegrenztem Datenvolumen hat, und beschließe, diesen auszuprobieren. In der Türkei angekommen, schalte ich wie beim letzten Mal die mobilen Daten auf die eSIM um, und es passiert zunächst ein mal gar nichts. Ich bin verärgert und fühle mich betrogen, habe aber zunächst andere Dinge (Passkontrolle etc.) zu tun. Später funktioniert es dann aber doch; die eSIM hat nur eine Weile für die Aktivierung gebraucht, danach funktioniert sie einwandfrei.

In der türkischen Wohnung angekommen, erwartet mich aber die nächste Hürde: Ich möchte auch mit dem iPad online sein, das nur Wifi-fähig ist. Ich erstelle hierzu einen mobilen Hotspot auf dem Handy und verbinde das iPad damit, welches mir anzeigt: "Verbunden – Kein Internetzugriff". Das Handy ist jedoch nach wie vor online. Ich schaue noch einmal auf die Webseite des Anbieters, und tatsächlich: Bei genauem Lesen hätte ich wissen können, dass bei Tarifen mit unbegrenztem Volumen Tethering nicht erlaubt ist. Aus Anbieter-Perspektive macht das durchaus Sinn, ich hatte es jedoch überlesen, da ich bisher nicht einmal wusste, dass das etwas ist, was der Anbieter beeinflussen kann. Da ich jetzt aber schon für sieben Tage bezahlt habe, suche ich im Internet nach einem Workaround und werde sehr schnell fündig: Ich lade auf dem Handy eine kostenlose App runter (kein Problem, da ich ja unbegrenztes Datenvolumen habe), die einen Proxy-Server einrichtet. Auf dem iPad muss ich jetzt nur noch in den WLAN-Einstellungen eintragen, dass der Datenverkehr über diesen Proxy-Server laufen soll. Am ersten Tag ist das Ganze ein bisschen unzuverlässig, bis ich auf die Idee komme, auf dem Handy die Batterieoptimierung für die Proxy-App auszuschalten, sodass sie nicht nach einer Weile im Hintergrund automatisch vom Betriebssystem beendet wird. Von nun an habe ich eine zuverlässige Internetverbindung auf beiden Geräten und muss mir keine Gedanken mehr über das verfügbare Volumen machen.
