Daniel’s father talking about the Targa Florio and it’s connection with the Ricciardo family’s love for motorsport:
Joe was born in Sicily and credited the Italian island with planting the seeds of his family’s love affair with racing. “They used to have this huge race called the Targa Florio that was really big and famous from the 1920s right up to the mid-70s,” he said. “I was too young to remember but my dad tells me my grandfather used to put me on his shoulders and walk me down the hill to watch the cars as they came through. I think motorsport is in our DNA.”
+ Daniel on driving around his grandfather’s hometown:
“I would like to say … hey, I went racing around the streets where you [his grandfather] grew up. I passed your house, drifting … sideways, and I left some rubber just outside your front door.”

Franca Florio - The “Star of Italy”
She was nicknamed by her admirers “The Queen of Palermo”, the german Kaiser Wilhelm II called her “The Star of Italy” and writer and poet Gabriele D'Annunzio described her as “a unique woman. A creature whose every movement possesses a divine rhythm” or simply “L’Unica”. She was born Francesca Paola Jacona della Motta dei baroni di San Giuliano, but is known in prosperity as Donna Franca Florio.
Tumblr media
The elegant, cultured, lively and intelligent Donna Franca Florio quickly dazzled society after her marriage to entrepreneur and shipowner Ignazio Florio Jr, one of the wealthiest men in Italy. Tall and slender with a 22-24 inch waist and with brilliant green eyes and raven black hair, she was a captivating beauty (if slightly unconventional due to her somewhat dark skin in a time where porcelain skin was valued, even undergoing a painful liquid enmael treatment in Paris in an effort to make her skin paler)
Tumblr media
Her wardrobe and sense of style was legendary, with the great fashion designer Jean Philippe Worth calling her the best dressed and most beautiful woman in Italy. Her clothes from the greatest fashion houses and jewelry from Cartier and Lalique were custom made for her, and the outfits worn during her public appearances were lovingly described in papers and magazines. Her jewelry, including a priceless pearl necklace made out of 365 pearls, is said to have outshone even those of the Queen of Italy herself, and was generously given to her by her husband, it is said, as apologies for his frequent infidelities. She did however stop wearing earrings, as they were said to take away from the beauty of her face.
Tumblr media
There was however much more to her than good looks and sense of style that made her such a celebrated figure. She was a woman of great intelligence, charisma and artistic taste, and was fluent in german, french and english as well as italian. She had a great ability to make connections with people, which was to great benefit for her entrepreneur husband. She was admired by the Intelligentsia, the artists and intellectuals of her time. Despite her extravagant money spending, she was gifted with great humanity and generosity. She promoted several nurseries, offered trousseaus to orphan girls, made sure her servants children got gifts on christmas, and personally nursed the wounded, and even adopted an orphan, of Messina after an earthquake devastated it in 1908.
Tumblr media
Emperor Franz Josef of Austria was also one of her royal admirers, gifting her with a trumpet for her car specifially made to announce his arrival, causing people to stop and salute the car thinking it was the Emperor himself. Also women admired her, such as Queen Elena of Italy, who she was also a lady-in-waiting to, and writers Matilde Serao and Anna Maria Neera Zuccari, the latter whom held her in such high esteem she would consult her for opinions on her literary work. One polish princess Ghiza was allegedly so enchanted with her after meeting her once at a hotel, she declared her love for her in a long letter and continued to admire her from afar.
Tumblr media
Despite all this attention, she never had any affairs and remained loyal to her husband and family. Beneath the glamourous facade she also suffered great personal anguish with three of her five children dying in their childhood, her husband’s cheating and scandal mongering, and eventually the Florio family’s economic collapse. After the bankruptcy of Ignazio Florio Jr., Donna Franca retreated to the Villa Silviati, belonging to the husband of her daughter Costanza Igiea Florio. She died there on 10 November 1950.
Under her and her husband’s patronage, Palermo blossomed into a cosmopolitan city and their mark is still visible to this day.

The historically Black fishing village of Pin Point is home to a cozy museum inside the former A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory, established 1926. Here, visitors can tour multiple buildings, including what was the picking and cooling house (where an opening short film plays), to immerse themselves in the daily life and work of the Gullah Geechee families who planted roots in the area.

David Duchovny Learns His Family's Tragic Jewish History on 'Finding Your Roots' – Kveller
David Duchovny Learns His Family’s Tragic Jewish History on ‘Finding Your Roots’
By Lior ZaltzmanFeb 13, 2023
Actor David Duchovny, known for “The X-Files,” “The Chair” and, most recently, playing a Jewish father in the controversial Netflix movie “You People,” has long known about his European Jewish roots. His paternal grandfather Moshe came from Berdychiv, which is in modern day Ukraine.
Yet in an episode of “Finding Your Roots” which airs this Tuesday, Duchovny, 62, discovers that his grandfather and his family made a couple of pit stops on their way to the U.S.
In the early 20th century, the Duchovnys made their way to Palestine, where they opened an inn. Unfortunately, the Duchovnys, along with 6000 fellow Jews, were violently expelled from the state one night in December of 1914 by the local Ottoman government.
In an exclusive clip from “Finding Your Roots,” Duchovny gets emotional as he reads about the fate that befell his great-grandparents and his grandfather.
The clip describes how one day, Bedouin police invaded the Jewish quarter of Jaffa, where the Duchovnys lived and worked, and forced them out of their homes with only bags and meager belongings. They were put aboard the Vincenzo Florio, a steamer headed to Port Said, Egpyt.
At night, the “relatively orderly” deportation turned violent. According to the clipping, men were thrown overboard, possessions were looted, jewelry was ripped off women and parents and children were separated, with the young ones “carried from […] the quayside.”
“There were desperate appeals on every side in the darkness, with heartrending screams. Everyone arrived in Alexandria resourceless,” the clipping about the event reads.
“Are you saying that my family was in that, or is this just something that happened?” a stunned Duchovny asks host Henry Louis Gates, who confirms that his ancestors were among the 6000 deported to Egypt like that.
“And treated like this?” a tearful and visibly emotional Duchovny inquires.
“Yes,” Louis Gates responds.

Hannah doesn’t have to call herself a tradwife because she already is one. As such, Ballerina Farm has become the lodestar for those still aspiring to establish an aesthetically pleasing—and, ideally, monetized—pastoral existence. Most of her acolytes are less subtle about their politics, which they assume Hannah shares. In 2021, Morgan Zegers, the founder of the Turning Point USA-affiliated group Young Americans Against Socialism, said that Ballerina Farm gives her “DAILY inspiration on how to live out my values as a Conservative.” On her podcast, Zegers, who recently got engaged and does not have any children, gives “young unmarried women who dream of becoming a traditional wife and stay-at-home mom one day” advice on how to “become an asset for your future family.”
She is far from the only tradwife-in-training who has been inspired by Ballerina Farm. Take Gwen the Milkmaid, a Canadian “ASMRtist” and wellness-influencer-turned-tradposter. “Pov: you used to be a pro-abortion, anti-marriage, lesbian ‘feminist,’” reads the caption on a TikTok post of her rehydrating sourdough starter, “but now you’re getting married to your fav man on earth, love serving him, and can’t wait to make babies.” Like Hannah, Gwen is blonde, posts videos of herself cooking and frolicking in prairie dresses, and emphasizes the difference between her old life and the new one she has built for herself—or, rather, the life she hopes to have built, someday. In one video, Gwen asks God “why I don’t have a fifty-acre farm, seven children, forty chickens and five jersey cows yet.” Lacking a multimillionaire father-in-law, or a dairy cow of her own, she’s forced to churn store-bought cream into homemade butter. Gwen’s videos turn the subtext of Ballerina Farm’s videos into text, as if to compensate for the ranch she lacks: Gwen is proudly antigovernment, antivaccine, and anti-birth control.
Ballerina Farm has also been frequently boosted by Evie Magazine. Billing itself as the conservative answer to Cosmo, Evie publishes articles on everything from “How to Wear Shorts Like a French Girl” to the supposedly rampant child sex trafficking to which the Biden administration has turned a blind eye. In February, they responded to a minor scandal that broke out when details about the Neelemans’ family wealth began circulating on TikTok. The article ends with a full-throated defense of Ballerina Farm. “Our culture has become far too comfortable with criticizing people for being rich,” it reads. “There’s nothing wrong with having money or coming from money. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with using that money to create a beautiful homesteading life that creates useful food, products, and content for people all across the country.” For Evie, the Neelemans’ secret wealth isn’t proof that living off the land is largely inaccessible to the masses but a symbol of the virtuousness of Ballerina Farm’s mission. They have enough money to live glamorously; instead, they choose to live a simple life. That this simple life might be an expensive illusion is never considered.
A month later, the magazine published a treatise on tradwives by Gina Florio, a personal trainer who moonlights as manager to Candace Owens, a conservative commentator whose BLEXIT foundation urged Black people to abandon the Democratic Party. (Owens has also promoted Ballerina Farm on Instagram. Hannah, for her part, reposted the endorsement and later deleted it.) Like Gwen the Milkmaid, Florio is a reformed liberal who wrote for Teen Vogue and PopSugar before she “left the left.” Tradwives, she argues, are superior to “the shrieking, blue-haired protester who wants on-demand abortion and supports the ‘free the nipple’ movement.” She describes Ballerina Farm as the example on which conservative women should model their lives: “The children are blonde and seemingly well-mannered. The father herds cattle in a cowboy hat. And the mother is impossibly beautiful as she milks cows in her overalls, loose braids, and zero makeup.” This is all in contrast to “the average twenty-five-year-old woman” who “lacks basic domestic skills, serially dates multiple men, and loudly opposes manners and decorum.”
To her credit, Florio acknowledges that it’s functionally impossible for most women—even those who want nothing more than to dedicate their entire lives to caring for a husband and children—to fulfill the tradwife ideal. She points out that real wages have stagnated since the 1970s, making it impossible to raise a family on a single income. “We have to really ask ourselves if we want to truly return to tradition,” Florio writes, “or if we want to just fantasize about the perfect trad wife who is both gorgeous and domestic.”

The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, and many more told the kind of magical stories that stayed in our hearts, along with catchy music that could get stuck in our heads for days. This period is often referred to as the “Renaissance Era,” and many suspect that these movies are loved by women everywhere because Disney successfully captured the brilliance and timelessness of femininity. Jasmine was seductive and required her man to work for her, Ariel taught us about sacrifice and trust, and Mulan was both brave and family-oriented. All of the princesses had their own personalities and opinions, but they each made room for a prince to come in and sweep them off their feet. None was too proud to reject a man.
These traditional Disney films were never political, and the themes were always centered on universal, relatable stories that brought people together rather than driving them apart. However, Disney has certainly lost its way over the last couple of decades. They’ve lost their touch at producing hit movies that resonate with both young children and adults.
Disney Movies Have Taken a Turn for the Worse
Turning Red, the Disney Pixar film of 2022 that was acclaimed for its heartwarming narrative and representation, did not achieve high commercial success compared to other Pixar films. With a global box office gross of only $20 million against a production budget of $175 million, it ranks among the biggest box office bombs of 2022. The supposed reason for its underperformance is attributed to its simultaneous release on Disney+. This strategy allowed audiences to view the film at home, significantly affecting its worldwide box office earnings. However, it left people wondering if it just wasn’t good enough to draw in audiences; there were many parents who expressed their disappointment with the type of inappropriate content that was being delivered to teenagers for the sake of sending a particular message to the world.
The Disney animated movie Strange World also faced a significant box office shortfall, with an estimated loss of $147 million in 2022. A notably woke aspect of the film is the introduction of Disney's first openly LGBTQ+ teenage character, who discusses his same-sex crush. The film's underperformance is attributed to various factors, including its inclusion of sexuality discussions, which deterred many parents from allowing their children to watch it. Some critics suggest that modern parents, more informed through social media, may choose to avoid content with inappropriate sexual themes for their children.
Similar issues in the past were observed with Pixar's Lightyear, which included a gay kiss and initially underperformed at the box office. Chris Evans, a voice actor in Lightyear, criticized those opposed to the movie's “inclusive” content. However, what he considered inclusive was just seen as annoyingly woke to the general public. Parents have generally never been on board with showing their children progressive content, regardless of the political message companies like Disney are desperately trying to send.
Elemental, a Pixar movie, actually defied initial poor box office performance to become a significant hit. Released in June, it had the worst opening in Pixar's history with $29.6 million in domestic ticket sales. However, the film, which cost $200 million to produce, gradually gained momentum, earning nearly $500 million globally. It currently ranks as the ninth top-grossing film of the year, surpassing Marvel's latest Ant-Man sequel. But this was an anomaly compared to the rest of the Disney flops in the last two years.
Now, Disney is again experiencing a box office bomb with its Thanksgiving release, Wish, the newest princess film that seeks to copy Encanto’s success. But, due to its poor storytelling, boring songs, and progressive message, it has also flopped.
Disney Says It “Lost Some Focus”
Disney has disclosed that it invested a staggering $965 million in four high-profile projects in 2023, which unfortunately turned out to be significant flops: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Secret Invasion. This revelation comes amid a cost-cutting initiative led by CEO Bob Iger, who returned to lead the company in November 2022. Iger emphasized the need to reduce production costs, acknowledging the exorbitant expenses involved in creating content.
In early November, Bob Iger said, “At the time the pandemic hit, we were leaning into a huge increase in how much we were making and I’ve always felt that quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality. And I think that’s exactly what happened. We lost some focus.”
Typically, the budgets of movies and streaming shows are kept confidential, as studios usually lump these costs into their overall expenses without detailing individual project expenditures. However, Disney's production activities in the UK provide a clearer picture of their spending, due to the unique financial reporting requirements in that country. Studios operating in the UK must set up separate companies for each production to avail a tax rebate of up to 25% on their expenditures. These companies are required to file financial statements, which reveal detailed spending data.
Disney has been leveraging the UK's incentive scheme by filming more content there. This strategy, however, has led to significant investments in some of its most expensive and least successful productions of the year. A notable example is the Marvel Studios superhero film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Despite spending a hefty $193.2 million on pre-production and filming, the movie opened to mediocre reviews. This situation illustrated the challenges Disney faces in managing production costs while striving to create compelling content that resonates with audiences and succeeds financially.
Disney Acknowledges That Going Woke Hasn’t Worked Out So Well for Them
Disney is finally acknowledging the significant impact of wokeness and culture wars on its operations. This admission was made in its annual financial report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the fiscal year ending September 30. The report highlights various aspects of Disney's performance and future risks. Disney employs about 225,000 workers worldwide and emphasizes its commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse workplace. This commitment aligns with its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) objectives, which focus on reflecting the life experiences of its audience and supporting diverse voices in creative and production teams.
Financially, Disney reported revenues of $88.9 billion for fiscal 2023, marking a 7% increase from 2022. Despite this growth, the company has reduced spending on film and TV content, cutting it from $29.8 billion to $27.2 billion. Iger plans to further reduce content spending to $25 billion next year. Alongside these cuts, Disney has also implemented staff reductions and other expense cuts, achieving about $7.5 billion in cost savings.
Disney's involvement in culture wars and public debates has had widespread effects. The company acknowledges risks related to “misalignments” with public and consumer preferences, which affect demand and profitability across various segments, including broadcast, cable, theaters, internet, mobile technology, theme parks, hotels, resorts, and consumer products. This misalignment has led to challenges in adapting to market changes and economic or social climates.
"Further, consumers’ perceptions of our position on matters of public interest, including our efforts to achieve certain of our environmental and social goals, often differ widely and present risks to our reputation and brands," Disney admitted, acknowledging that consumer preferences impact revenue.
Disney's leisure business is influenced by multiple factors, including health concerns and the political environment. The company's intervention in the debate over Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill in March had significant repercussions. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis responded by revoking Disney’s special district status in the state, highlighting the cost of Disney's political engagement.
Closing Thoughts
Whether Disney is going to correct its course is yet to be seen. Even with its flops, the brand remains the most recognizable name in the entertainment industry, and it has committed itself so deeply to the woke liberal cause that it’s difficult to imagine they would ever come back from that. In the meantime, their movies will continue to flop if they don’t find a way to return to the Renaissance Era (or something remotely close to that) and offer audiences heartwarming, relatable stories rather than subtle (and not-so-subtle) tales of progressive politics.
==
I've seen statistics suggesting that Disney has lost a good $1b at the box office in 2023, not counting the major losses in streaming, both in terms of the cost vs return of the content (the excrable She-Hulk was reportedly $25m per episode, almost double the $15m budget of Godzilla Minus One, for a 9-episode dumpster fire), and the inability of the platform as a whole to turn a profit.

Happy birthday JO SIFFERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (07/07/1936 - ∞) 💙⚡
Joseph 'Jo' Siffert, nicknamed by his family and friends 'Seppi', was born in Fribourg, Switzerland, to a poor family, his father was a dairy owner and it's thanks to him if Jo got interested in motorsport: at the age of twelve, he took him to Bern, to see the 1948 Swiss Grand Prix; from that day Jo knew that he wanted to become a racing driver. After concluding his mandatory school years, in 1951, he started working as an apprentice in a workshop that mainly repaired cars; there he would meet the swiss driver Benoît Musy, with whom he developed a great friendship (after Benoît's passing, Jo would make a tribute to him with his helmet design).
Like many other racing drivers (von Trips, Surtees, Ickx), the young Seppi, made his motoracing debut in the world of motorbikes in 1957, and quickly made his name known by showing his determination and talent, that later would earn him the Swiss 350 cc motorcycle championship in 1959, before switching to the the world of four-wheel racing by joining the Formula Junior.
After two years, Jo finally made his debut in Formula 1: he took part at the '62 Monaco GP, racing in a Lotus-Climax for a private team, the first of many others, because during his racing, Jo changed a few teams, like in 1964 he joined the Rob Walker racing team, with whom he earned three important victories: he won the '64 and '65 Mediterranean GPs, both were non-championship, but this gp was considered to be very prestigious, and later he would win the '68 British GP, which was the first official victory for the Swiss driver with the private team, that later he would leave in 1970 to join March. His second victory would later come once he joined the BRM team in 1971, at the Austrian GP; but unfortunately that would be his last, that same year Seppi would pass away in a tragic accident during a non-championship race held at Brands Hatch.
Jo always demonstrated to be a very versatile driver: after becoming the lead driver for Porsche, he participated often at the 24 hours of Le Mans, he won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring along with Hans Herrmann, and other tricky competitions like the 1000km of Spa and the '70 Targa Florio. Porsche would later choose Seppi to start their new racing programme in the Can-Am series in 1969.
Jo was also known for being the testimonial for the Heuer watches, and used to sell them to his fellow F1 drivers like Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt and many others. Being the testimonial, in '69 it was released his own personilised version and was called the 'Heuer Autvia': it had an elegant white watch face with light blue details. The watch had a big success, but despite that, after Jo's passing, Jack Heuer, preferred to remove it from trade and never use those colours again.

Quotes on love A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up his children without surrounding them with books, if he has the means to buy them. It's a kind of enthusiasm that guides us towards the search for knowledge, without believing in any superior entity. It's an olistic approach to life that struggles against any form of vanity, of stupid power and false authority. It's a form of magic, of ecstatic feeling, it's the art of living for freedom without having to submit our inner thoughts to the banalities of our society. It's a dream that gives hope to our intellect, it's a mistery without solution. it's the absurdity of our life, it's a nonsensical joke. That's why I thought to link the surrealistic poetics with the spirit of my creation, and that's why the Daimon Club was born. Anna’s Archive (better to use a VPN to surf this website, with Opera browser you get it for free) is a free non-profit online shadow library metasearch engine providing access to a variety of book resources (also via IPFS), created by a team of anonymous archivists (referred to as Anna and/or the Pirate Library Mirror (PiLiMi) team), and launched in direct response to law enforcement efforts, formally assisted by The Publishers Association and the Authors Guild, to close down the Z-Library (Free access to knowledge and culture) website in November 2022. As such, the Anna’s Archive team claims to provide metadata access to Open Library materials, to be a backup of the Library Genesis and Z-Library shadow libraries, presents ISBN information, has no copyrighted materials on its website, and only indexes metadata that is already publicly available. Anna’s Archive notes that their website, a non-profit project, accepts donations to cover costs (hosting, domain names, development and related). Nonetheless, besides the recently launched Anna’s Archive website, many other alternative workarounds to the recent attempts to take down the Z-Library (better to use a VPN to surf this website, with Opera browser you get it for free) platform have been reported. Mike Florio Returns To Library with a New Christmas Book in Hand
Tumblr media
Well known NFL commentator and writer Mike Florio so enjoyed his summer visit to Wheeling when a record number of people packed the Library's auditorium to meet him, that he's coming back to his hometown for Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library for a special Friday program on December 15 at 1 PM.The new book is called "On Our Way Home." Click to See and Hear Mike talk about the book. Book description:John Persepio picked a hell of a time to start seeing ghosts.Three days before Christmas and with a client’s trial headed for the jury, Persepio starts running into a feisty old man, everywhere he goes. As John’s life spins out of control amid the holiday revelry, the one constant presence becomes the old man. And soon the old man’s wife. And eventually someone else.On Our Way Home lands at the intersection of A Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life to create a new tradition that will unite generations, reaffirm family bonds, and stir deep feelings of nostalgia. Before it all ends, John faces a very important and very unexpected question, one that he must resolve quickly. If you read On Our Way Home this holiday season, you will make a habit of reading it every holiday season — and you will make sure your parents and children read it, too.Mike Florio is one of the leading writers, reporters, and commentators covering the NFL. His website, ProFootballTalk.com, has served as the primary online clearinghouse for all NFL news and analysis for more than two decades. He carried around the basic idea for On Our Way Home for more than 10 years before writing all of it during a recent December. He hopes you will enjoy reading it as much as he enjoyed writing it. "It moves quickly," Florio said. "And it’s a unique story that carries important messages about family, redemption, and reconciliation." Read Mike's recent post about returing to Wheeling:  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/on-our-way-home-will-take-me-back-home-again-next-monthMike will have plenty of copies with him. The Amazon price is $3.99 for the ebook and $9.99 for paperback. The proceeds from the sale of the Christmas book benefit the Human Society of Harrison County, a local no-kill shelter that provides care and feeding for rescued dogs and cats that are looking for a good home. "In one fell swoop," Florio notes, "you can support a good cause and grab some quick and easy (and cheap) Christmas gifts." Florio will also bring copies of his Wheeling-set mob book Father of Mine for those who missed out last time. The Library will have hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and other treats for attendees of this special event. Call 304-232-0244, or visit ohiocountylibrary.org for more information. Hello!
11: 3 books that you would recommend everyone to read
Oh boy, this one's hard. Ok let's go -
1: Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen - listen. Classics are classics for a reason. It's funny, it's hilarious, it's deep, it's full of plot twists... I didn't want to put it down when I read it the first time and I've re-read it a million times. It's a source of joy like few others.
2: I Leoni di Sicilia (The Florios of Sicily: a novel), Stefania Auci - this is actually part one of a two-book saga, but I still haven't read the second one so you get the first volume recommendation. It's the story of how the Florio family started from being poor Calabrian spice merchants to the richest enterpreneurs in 1800s Sicily. It's incredible. The prose flows and captures you, the story is compelling, the characters are complex and fully-rounded and everything is so rich. It's an amazing window to what Sicily was in that time of history, achingly beautiful and unequal and dripping with complexity.
3: The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco - a murder mystery set in a Middle Ages monastery. The only thing I didn't like about this book was a page-long description of the church door, which still haunts me. But the rest is masterfully done - there's secrets, and politics, and murders, and a building that is, by itself, a character.
