Alright, so. I've finally been able to fully read through all of Firestorms stuff up until new 52, and I am currently reading through that- THAT series is going to be another post for another day.

But rn I kinda wanna talk about my biggest problem with Jason's time as Firestorm.

And it all starts with Ronnie and Prof Stein. In one of the later issues of his run, when Ronnie and Martin were at the College, there is an entire arch about how they need to trust each other and not force the Firestorm transformation, because its like taking someone elses body and using it. They need to rebuild their trust, and they only become Firestorm is Prof Stein says so, or if someone will die otherwise if Ronnie doesn't act. (Ronnie also saves Cliff's life during this time) Long story short, the two of them set boundaries and try and work together again.

IN JASONS TIME- He just takes people, They wont remember anyways, he just body snatches left and right! HE HAS GOTTEN MULTIPLE PEOPLE KILLED DOING THIS- And like, he never learns! He NEVER talks to anyone about this and it's never mentioned! Random homeless person on the street? MINE- Oh He's annoying? Drops him to find someone else. Even people begging him to let them go he just doesn't!

THEN As the story goes on, Ronnie's friends find Jason and offer him help! First Firehawk, who awakens a piece of Ronnie still left in the firestorm Matrix (Or something) but he sacrifices himself so Cliff (Who became evil) doesn't go and hunt down Jason and Ronnie's families, Then Professor Stein, who gives up immortality and the secrets of the universe to help Jason, and lastly Mikhail who is here to try and help as well! And you know what? This picture right here should tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about Jason's era-

Everyone trying to work together, but Jason is off to the side sulking because he wants to do this alone. But gosh darn it Jason, Firestorm is a TEAM.

Side note, I still enjoyed Jasons era, it was fun and there were a few really good ideas there, it's just the body snatching and refusal to work as a team that gets me. (There's probably more, but like there's good stuff here)

I was interested to see how the "Who's House's successor going to be?" conversation played out on the Chase TWOP thread as the show aired. While that thread didn't really have too many people predicting Chase as House's successor right away, the thing people said the most often early on (by at least Dec. 2005) was that Foreman was more suited to Cuddy's role, mostly because of his ambition (she's the boss!), but also a little bit due to personality. It was interesting to see the different ways people matched Foreman, Chase and Cameron to House, Cuddy or Wilson. Some categorized according to personality/role they played in the narrative, others based on ambition, and others by how they worked through diagnoses (and some mixed and matched).

To start, there was more discussion of Chase as being in the Wilson role and Cameron in the House role. In Dec. 2005, TWOP forum user Naja Nivae said that "Both [Chase and Wilson] are calm and level headed and take House's shit without flinching and both have snappy patter with him. Plus both seem to have a sort of beaten down acceptance of life and a quiet caring way of approaching people and patients." This same person said that "Cameron in a way is more like House personality wise, in that if things don't fit her views then she must get her way at all costs no matter who it hurts in the long run. She, like House, is a drama queen only about different things. House flies off the handle in anger, while she does it with sadness or caring."

Then there seemed to be a shift and more discussion turned toward Chase being set up as the "mini-House," but mostly based on similar out-of-the box thinking (looks like this especially came up after episodes like Failure to Communicate and then kept going from there).

In 2008, TWOP forums user wildebeest made the point that all "the original ducklings showed different aspects of House's character" and that they "loved the contrast between Foreman acting like House and Chase thinking like House." I've added that screenshot below, but also had to include the one where they predicted in August 2007 that Chase as an intensivist would end up in the ICU and that Wilson would have "a cancer scare."

The writers will actually bring back literally any other past storylines except the ones to do with Buddie lmao. Like, we've had the Well, the Sniper (leading to the Will), the Tsunami, the Hostage situation, Eddie leaving for Dispatch (technically public service officer but you know), the Lightning strike. All this delicious trauma is just there up for reliving and they keep digging Shannon out of the grave. And also Marcy and the kids for Bobby. ENOUGH. LET THEM REST IN PEACE. Never forget when Shen Qiao cut a man's tendons, basically crippling him in one hand.

He could have cut off the arm or the hand itself to achieve the same effect. No, he cuts the tendons. This is even more chilling when you know that Xuandu Mt. also teaches medicine. Shen Qiao knows the human body so well he can cut out a man's tendons while in combat.

The thing that gets me is, if nothing changes, if Tim just stays on as showrunner, we will literally never be free of the worry that one of our mains is going to die in a random episode with no real warning in-universe. If the live stream hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t have even thought it was a possibility while the 118 was trying to get the antivirus and escape the lab. It had been nearly eight seasons of ridiculously unrealistic NDEs for all of the main characters, there was no precedent for Bobby’s death. If I hadn’t seen the live stream or anything on social media leading up to the episode, I wouldn’t have imagined a world in which they would kill off Bobby (except as a fake out). I would’ve understood that his oxygen tank was compromised, but would’ve assumed that Athena or Buck or the military or somebody would come up with a solution to the single antivirus problem. Because that is what every previous 9-1-1 episode had assured me would happen. There is no answer that is beyond this team and this family when it comes to keeping each other alive. “There is not a locked room anywhere that the right tools and enough time can’t break open.” It’s engraved into the heart of the show.

But now that there is precedent for a main’s death, we’ll never be able to breathe easy when it comes to the team being in danger, especially in the big emergency episodes or heavily promoted weeks. Because if Bobby can die in arguably one of the most disrespectful and idiotic ways for a main character and lead on a show to die after eight years, then literally nobody is safe. If Tim sticks around, he will always have the ability to “play God” again, and destroy the firefam with another death.

This is nothing new for many shows, including some of my favorites! But after watching this show for five years, and being reassured in and out of universe that they would never kill off a main, and the show keeping that promise, it had become an expectation and a joy of mine that nobody ever dies. I love angst and silliness and found family, and that is what I watch this show for. And call me egotistical, call me parasocial, but I do not appreciate being lied to by a show runner who kills a main character on a whim. That’s not good writing, it’s somebody who lost the plot a long time ago.

I’m thinking about my self ship with alameda slim again… and can only imagine that he’s had little to no competition in the cattle rustling scheme till she showed up. He’d be conducting his robbery of others cattle one night when suddenly my self insert shows up. You wouldn’t see her at first you’d hear her kulning from way up high on one of the cliffs.

Which normally in itself would scare off other thief’s but alameda would be pissed that someone was able to break the cows out of his trance and into following another. And would make a fair attempt to gain back control. So they’d have a sort of singing battle. Until one of them decides it’s getting them no where and have to fight it out to gain any ground in taking the cows.
