April 2024 Camp Nano Project - Thief of Hearts

He stole her heart. She wants it back.

Rory is no angel. Then again, angels wouldn’t last long in Rime, the city of eternal winter and night she calls home. But it is the only place someone with half-magic bloodlines can make a semi-honest living without getting harassed.

Or at least it was until her heart was stolen.

Now she’s got two days to get it back from the thief who took it before she dies. Unfortunately, this also means keeping him alive long enough to get it back, and that’s not going to be easy when most of the city’s magical syndicates have a bounty on his own heart.

Some kinds of magic are illegal, even in an enchanted city like Rime. Emmett’s talent for stealing people’s life forces has put him on the wrong side of the law, and on the blackmail list of one of the corrupt leaders of the city’s biggest magical syndicate.

If he wants to keep what’s left of his family, he has to keep stealing the hearts of his employer’s competition.

One job gone bad, and he’s got a heart with a very determined owner on his track, and a boss who wants him to make things right. That is, if either of them get their hands on him before the rival syndicates’ bounty hunters do.

⭐ - What do people assume about your OC? Do they question the quality of their character?

It depends on whether people know anything about what he's done for the Star Syndicate. If they don't know he's been stealing hearts, people tend to think he's a pretty good father to Carlo and taking his family’s deaths pretty hard, which is pretty accurate. If they know anything about his Gift, though, the immediate assumption is that he's a dangerous killer who can't be trusted. Pretty much anyone who knows he's actually used his Gift would definitely write him off as a murderer and a monster, no matter the reason he did it.

✨ - What makes your OCs heart race? Is it fear or love or something deeper?

The thing that could really cause that for Emmett would be feeling trapped, either physically or by circumstances. Usually he'll be trying to find a way out of a situation, but if he feels backed into a corner he will tend to blindly panic. Love, to Emmett, is something that makes him feel secure and safe, less a racing heart than a refuge.

Emmett wants people in his life he can trust and rely on, but he’s well aware he's not always the best judge of character, so now he tends to hold them at arms length until he knows enough to determine whether he ought to trust them. If he decides he can, he can actually be somewhat clingy because he doesn't want to miss out on any time he could potentially spend with them.

🌠 - What is your OC’s greatest desire and how far are they willing to go to obtain it?

Emmett wants to protect the only family he has left, Carlo. He would and has killed to do it, and he's also willing to give up his own freedom and any chance of ever seeing Carlo again if that's in his son's best interests. The most important thing to him is that Carlo is safe and has a chance at a future, whether that future includes Emmett or not.

"Annabeth is terrified of spiders."

Luke and Annabeth's existence is so interwoven that the best analogy he can come up with for the reasoning and justification behind his betrayal of everything he's ever known and loved is one connected to her.

Say what you want, but I think Luke thought about Annabeth and Thalia during every part of his betrayal. He knew that even Annabeth's complete adoration and devotion to Athena couldn't make her care. He knew that the king of the gods, Zeus could have saved Thalia but instead, he turned her into a tree "as a last resort" to keep her out of the way for good.

Of course, his reasoning for siding with Kronos reminds him of Annabeth. Small and scary things will be crushed immediately, if he has a bigger power behind him he at least has a shot at making a change.

He's been mistreated by Hermes, but he's also spent years watching his little sister worship Athena, do everything she ever asked all for a hat that turns you invisible, and the occasional nod her way. He's her big brother, you don't think HE KNOWS that she thinks love has to be earned? You don't think he's done everything he could to prove to her that's not true.

Ultimately his betrayal had everything to do with Annabeth. It was for Thalia, it was for the rest of the Hermes kids, for all of the unclaimed in his cabin who had to spend their whole lives knowing that their godly parent didn't care about them enough to even acknowledge their existence, it was for Clarisse who has clearly been abused by Ares and yet would still do anything for his favour, it was for every half-blood who had ever been mistreated by the gods.

The first analogy he thinks of in trying to describe the relationship between demigods and gods is one associated with Annabeth because she's the reason he can justify his betrayal.

2. What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?

How young he actually is. Given all the white in his hair and the stress lines in his face, people would be shocked Emmett's only in his early thirties.

7. What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?

It took me quite a while to decide Emmett’s family actually came from a different part of the world the story is set in than the country where Rime is located. Giving him that backstory let me expand the world quite a bit and also slip in some lore specific to that area, especially a couple legends his people would tell, as well as another language.

15. Does your OC have a faceclaim? If so, who?

Given this whole thing got started almost a decade ago when my brain latched onto the plot of a Criminal Minds episode...yes he does!

So basically this would be Emmett, just with a lot more grey hair!

21. Does your OC have any illnesses or disorders? How do they handle it?

Stealing hearts for anyone other than himself has taken a definite toll on Emmett's own. He gets tired more easily than he should, and he gets debilitating headaches especially in the first few days after he steals a heart. He's mostly dealing with it by ignoring it, knowing it's an inevitable consequence of using his Gift the way he does.

24. What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone down? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?

Honestly, if he'd stolen a heart other than Rory’s, he might not have had nearly as good a chance of getting out from under Marcus’s control. Rory has the connections and the sheer reckless determination to take on an untouchable crime lord, and without her heart, nothing left to lose by doing it. She never would have challenged Marcus without the incentive, but she's also the person best suited to help take him down. Without her, Emmett would probably have continued stealing hearts for Marcus until Carlo’s own Gift manifested.

Supersons vs Ghost Gal (It started with Grandma's Kent Cookies)

Jon huffs as he tosses himself on his bed.

He didn't do it! He really didn't! At least not this time and yet he's in trouble for 'lying'!!!

Sure he liked to sneak pieces of whatever his grandmother would bake for dessert for the night, heck sometimes she sneakily let him, but he swears this time he didn't do it! And if he did he wouldn't had taken so many cookies! He may not be the sharpest but even he knew better than to take so many from the tray!

And yet no one believed him! His mom was so disappointed he wasn't 'owning up' to it that she banned dessert for him for like three days! He's totally innocent!

He frowned and began to wonder if it was Conner but remembered he was off world doing a reunion of YJ in space for the last few days.

But still someone had taken those cookies. And it wasn't him! Or grandpa, or his dad, he knew it wasn't his mom and his grandma loved feeding people over eating it for herself, it was her love language! And-

Jon's eyes widened and shot up when he realized something

Someone stole his grandma's cookies... without alerting him, the one with super-hearing!

And...

And no one believed he dint steal them or realized this either.

Oh... he... he needed help. And he knew just who might be able to help him.

Meanwhile, hidden not to far from the Kent's farm, hiding in a old tree house that had been built for a young Clark Kent, a girl roughly around Jon's age with white hair and glowing green eyes happily munched away on the cookies she had managed to snag for the night.

'I'll write a sorry note tomorrow. They smelt so freaking good and I haven't had chocolate chip cookies in ages' she thought as she stuffed another in her mouth.
