[ sabo, who had been sick since the day before, missed valentine's at school. ace comes home with an armful of chocolate to share with the sick sabo, who notices quickly which gifts were between friends and others that wanted to be more. ]

"oh? what's this?"
sabo sits up from his reclined position, abandoning his pillows to reach for a bag with an envelope taped to it.
ace glances down and tenses when he sees which one has captured sabo's interest, but sabo has it in his hold before ace can grab for it.
he pries the note away from the bag and flips it over, eyes landing on the heart sticker sealing the flap. "oh," he repeats, crumpling the paper between his fingers. "i see."
ace winces at the harsh sound of tearing paper, unable to do anything but watch while sabo rips the envelope and whatever was inside in half, putting an excessive amount of force into the action. he tosses the two halves to the side and opens the bag they came with with equal vigor, splitting the seam and causing individually-wrapped chocolate pieces to fall onto his legs.
sabo drops the remnants of the bag to pick one up, unwrap the foil, and throw the chocolate into his mouth. he chews loudly, and his face still looks dangerously annoyed, so ace doesn't say anything, leaving him to it.
the incident passes without commotion. at least, until another package catches sabo's eye.
his hand knocks ace's out of the way to reach for a bag with a folded note attached to the drawstring. in short work he pulls it free from the string and flips it open to read. ace sets his hand on the candy bar he'd been reaching for initially, but his attention is all on sabo.
sabo snorts after reading the inscription and throws the note over his shoulder. ace thinks that's the end, but he's soon proven wrong when he's met with a lapful of sabo, his hands twining together behind ace's neck, a sullen and petulant look on his closer-than-necessary face.
"ace~" he croons, batting his lashes, tilting his head just so. "don't forget to reject her, okay?"
he tilts forward and ace steadies both hands on his back to keep them both from falling off the bed. sabo doesn't even leave him time to reply, hungrily pressing his lips to ace's barely-parted ones, working them open further. ace leans into it, choosing not to acknowledge the small voice in the back of his head that says sabo is still technically sick. one hand moves down to the small of sabo's back, the other digging into the strands of hair at the base of his skull. he pulls just a little and sabo whines and ace licks into his mouth, regaining control for a moment before backing out entirely.
"anything for you," he whispers. sabo's eyes glimmer and ace works hard to keep him happy, reaching up to settle a chocolate at his lips, thumb and forefinger brushing against them. sabo opens and ace pushes the chocolate inside, waiting patiently as sabo licks the residue from his thumb and then leans back to grant ace a modicum of personal space.
sabo, satisfied, moves out of ace's hold, back onto the mattress. he sits there for a minute, chewing thoughtfully, a spare blanket thrown over his shoulders in hopes of regaining some lost warmth. ace thinks his face has more color in it now but that could be from recent events instead of being a sign of the sickness fading.
"maybe i should've brought some soup," he mutters, thinking for the first time that eating all this chocolate can't be healthy.
"no," sabo says back. "i've been eating like a sick person all weekend. let me have this."
ace stifles a snort and reaches blindly for another small box. "fine. try this one. it has walnuts so it's not pure-" ace stops short, noticing the colorful heart-shaped letter attached to the back side.
sabo notices as well, snatching the box from ace's hand before he has time to pull back. his eyes narrow dangerously, reading the note over. ace knows all this stress can't be good for sabo's recovery, so he reaches out to throw the box somewhere out of sight. (and vaguely, he begins to realize just how many more similar letters are still left in the pile. ugh. this was going to be quite the day.)
sabo catches his hand before it can reach and tugs so ace overbalances, sprawling out across the mattress. sabo settles over him, expression dark and words a sickly-sweet contrast, considering the situation.
"don't forget to spare her feelings, ace." he bends down to hover over his boyfriend's face, hands pressed into the mattress on either side of his head. "just make sure she knows you're already taken."
"uhuh," ace stammers. "you got it. tomorrow. i'll be right on it."
this has the opposite effect of what he'd hoped for. sabo gives up on all pretense, expression twisting into irritation. he drops his forehead to ace's and then they're kissing again and ace has to worry about keeping sabo steady so he doesn't fall right on top of him.
sabo pulls back far too soon and he's breathing deep and ace feels bad, really. his hands raise to cradle sabo's cheeks, letting him lean into the hold, a familiar vulnerability crossing his features. ace smiles and rises, working himself into a sitting position until they're sat across from each other, still leaned forward into a shared space.
"i didn't know you were this popular," sabo mumbles. ace runs a thumb down sabo's cheek. "i feel sick," sabo says, and ace knows it's not a physical reaction. not born from the illness he already has.
"i don't care about any of them," he says back, softly. "i came home as soon as class got out to be with you. i won't even read any of them, okay?" not that sabo has let him thus far, but still.
sabo nods, and it's as good an answer as ace is going to get, for now.
"no more chocolates, okay? let's put them away for now."
"tired," sabo mutters, and ace retracts his hands, settling them onto his lap.
"you should lie down then. i'll throw all this trash out."
he leans back to start doing just this but stops when sabo's hands settle on his shoulders.
"wait," he says, voice light and hesitant and shaky, just a little. "stay with me? you don't have to sleep. just stay here. please." his fingers clench, digging into ace's uniform. all the annoyance and irritation has bled out, leaving only a very worn-out look distorting his features.
"alright." ace gives in without resistance. he takes sabo's hands in his own and lies them both down, letting sabo bury into his chest, arm curling carefully over sabo's side. "let me know if you overheat."
"this is perfect," sabo counters, and for the moment, ace has to agree.
