Timothee's hand had been resting on your knee, lightly squeezing and releasing under the dinner table all evening. Meanwhile, his knee maintained a steady and perpetual bounce, occasionally knocking the table’s underside. Timothee had little "tics" you learned to identify early on in your relationship. His hands shook ever so slightly when he was stressed or overwhelmed. He spun his rings around his long, slender fingers when he was fidgety with anxiety. He licked and lightly chewed his bottom lip when he was thinking of words to say. The leg bouncing was new. And you weren’t sure what it meant. Was he mad? Nervous? Was he high? No. His hands were usually in your pants minutes after he smoked…no matter where you were. This was a new one.
You leaned back in your chair and whispered in his ear. “You good?”
You felt him spin a ring on his index finger resting on your knee. Anxiety...and something else. “Why wouldn’t I be?” He whispered back, pressing a kiss to your temple.
“You guys are so CUTE!” Florence said, a loud, British emphasis on the word cute.
The dinner table was filled with your friends and Timothee’s, for no real reason or special occasion. Everyone was in town--save a few friends--so everyone got together. Timothee usually loved outings like this. He was usually the loudest one in the room. That night he seemed...distracted.
You waited until the attention from Florence’s comment died down and eyes had wandered elsewhere before you responded.
“Your knee.”
Timothee pretended to listen to a story Saoirse was telling about the ways people mispronounced her name. You could tell he was pretending, because his eyes weren’t focused the way they usually were when he was engaged in a conversation.
“Hmm?” He hummed in the form of a question, raising his eyebrows but not looking over at you.
“Your knee,” you repeated and reached your hand over and pressed down on it. “You’ve been bouncing it all evening.”
He looked at you then. “I have?”  “Yeah. What’s wrong?”
He licked his lips, then pushed his top teeth down into the perfectly pink colored flesh. He looked around at everyone sitting at the table, making sure no one was looking over as he leaned in closer. The light scent of Chardonay fell from his mouth as he whispered, “I don’t really want to be here.”
It would have alarmed you if it hadn’t of come out as a chuckled confession.
“Really?” You asked.
“Really.” His hand, still positioned on your knee, squeezed a little.
You were about to ask why when his hand traveled higher, leaving your knee and resting comfortably on your inner thigh.
“If I’m being honest,” he began, making sure no one was listening. “I just really, really need-”
“Come. On. What are the two of you whispering about?” Pauline’s said a little too loudly. The restaurant quieted down for a moment, like a school cafeteria when someone drops their tray.
“Someone’s had a little too much champagne,” Timothee said, once the restaurant resumed its normal volume. He reached over and grabbed her glass, poured it into his and took a big gulp. Pauline rolled her eyes. “But, if you must know...” he continued, his voice taking on the tone of one who is about to make an announcement. You had no idea what he was about to say. “I was just about to tell y/n how much I need to have sex with her.”
The table was silent.
“Right now,” Timothee added.
More silence. Followed by an “EW!” from Pauline.
“You asked,” Timothee said, shrugging.
You couldn’t even be mad. You covered your mouth and part of your nose with your left hand and hid your laugh. There was a snort from Saoirse, trying her hardest not to laugh out loud, and a proud nod and thumbs up from Florence, who clearly supported the decision for the two of you to bone whenever the mood struck.
“So, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’m gonna go have sex.”
“God, if I hear my brother say, ‘have sex’ one more time I’m going to shove these skewers in my ears,” Pauline said as you grabbed your purse and shoved it over your shoulder.
Timothee grabbed your hand and led you out of the restaurant, stopping as you made it out of the door. His hand slid across your cheek and into your hair, thumb resting on your jaw as he kissed you. A taxi was already waiting. The driver tapped on the horn once and waved the two of you in.
“Sorry,” Timothee said, sliding into the cab, pulling you into his lap in the process. Timothee rapidly gave the driver the address, his hands sliding into the back of your pants, gripping your ass cheeks and pushing you against him. He looked into your eyes with a hunger you wondered how long he had been holding back that day. “Do these close?” He asked the driver, pointing to the privacy window that separated the front and back seats.  Without looking back, the driver shut the window and the taxi lurched forward into the New York City traffic.
“I’ve been waiting all day to be alone with you,” Timothee said to you as he ground your hips into his. He wore a loose pair of black slacks, and your dress rode up and rested above your hips. You could feel the outline of his dick in his pants. “If we didn’t leave right then and there, I would have had to clear the table and fuck you in front of everyone.”
“Some people would pay to see that,” you teased.
“I’m sure a lot of people would pay to see that. No one knows what true perfection looks like, until they’ve seen you naked. I mean, look at these,” he said, slipping the thin straps of your dress down your shoulders. You pulled your arms out and let your forest green, silky dress flutter down, the fabric laying in a pile around your waist. Timothee grabbed your tits, one in each hand and squeezed them lightly before running his tongue across each mound. “Perfection,” he said and took a nipple into his mouth.
The cab came to a stop and a couple horns blared in the distance.
“Fuck, how much longer?” Timothee asked no one, impatiently. He slid the sleeve of his dress shirt up his arm to check his watch.
“Just take me in this taxi,” you growled, rolling your hips against his.
Timothee smirked before adjusting himself under you, sitting straighter in the back seat of the taxi. For a moment, you wondered how many other couples fucked in the back of New York taxis.
“Can’t do that.”
“Why noooot?” You whined. “We’ve had sex in a taxi before. We’ll be quiet he won’t even know.”
“That’s just the thing,” Timothee said, squeezing one of your nipples between his index finger and thumb. “Good sex demands to be loud.” He let go of your nipple just before it got to the point of pleasurable pain and ran his warm tongue up the side of your neck. He stopped once you got to your ear.
“And I’m going to make you scream.”

Confession Sunday: This is going to be very unpopular, but after SM4, I don't want Tom and Z to work with each other as love interests. Or again, if that means they can maintain privacy in their relationship. I hope Z has a smaller role in that film, and it's more on Tom's Peter and Black Cat, maybe. The backlash both of them got for TCR and Challengers because they became public is very deranged. They should be able to play characters with love interest without fear of public backlash because they are adults and professionals. Im kinda scared with Romeo and Juliet. I hope ppl are sensible and dont embarrass Tom cause it's not just him on stage. Francesca and the rest of the cast deserve their moment.
They are not the first couple to act but they the first famous couple of the younger generation that ppl are too invested in and honestly don't have the best energy towards their union depaite them being complete starbgers to us. I'm aware this is hypocritical as I am a fan of both and I'm on tumblr but I've been aware of both sides of the fandom on these blogs, solo fans of each other and I understand the frustration to want you fav to be independent of their relationship because it limits their artistry. They are actors first!!!!
Unpopular opinion, and I'm gonna get tomatoes, but looking back, SM NWH presstour was a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing for Tomdaya fans, but its a curse cause now when they do it again, the soundbites are gonna feel curated and tired. I started to see a problem when Tom kept mentioning it when he was promoting TCR because, let's be honest, he was ashamed of the results of the show. He used it as armour, and that's not fair case it was him that chose to do that show with poor execution. Using his family as pr is no better than Dom no shade. Even when Challengers was promoted and Tom was mentioned, it was cute as Tomdaya fans, but objectively, it's unheard of unless it's a podcast.
David Bowie and Iman are the best counterparts because they both were successful in their lane but were together. Iman was asked about David, but I was brief because she already had a business and foundation stand from. Both Tom and Z are in the middle of building that foundation.
I read on a blog how Riley from that Daisy amazon show filmed an intimate scene with her actor husband, and she said it was awkward because they were acting, and when they are together, it's real. I want them to have a life that we, as fans, don't know because overexposure is always bad in hindsight. Look at Jelenas. They can't get over the accessibility they had to that couple, and that's just sad.
I enjoyed the intimate scenes in Challengers and TCR because I was invested in the characters they were playing because they had respectful costars who i had little information about them other than acting, and it was great acting. I think it's even why I couldn't buy Paul and Chani in Dune 2 because I know Timothee and Zendaya are very good friends. Almost like siblings, like Timothee called her a sis!!!😭😭😭
I never have this issue when he's Taylor, Florence, or Saoirse because i know them through acting only, and I'm not invested in their lives cause its private as fck.
What are your thoughts???
Wow Anon.... you said a LOT with this ask/confession lol.
Thank you for your input and confession Anon.
Personally? I don't think there's anything wrong with Tom and Z working together even though they're in a relationship together. 🤷🏾‍♀️
Do you know how many actors have worked together in Hollywood and were in relationships with each other? Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward, Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Richard Burton, JLo and Ben Affleck, Emily Blunt & John Krasinski, etc. Shoot, even Baz Luhrmann and his wife work together on films lol 😅 It's not exactly unheard of in Hollywood. 🤷🏾‍♀️
Re: The NWH press tour....
Hmm... I'm not sure why this is a concern exactly. 🤔 But I also don't feel like how TZ were during the press tour together was a bad thing either? 🤷🏾‍♀️ Even if they were to break up tomorrow, their press tour videos are endearing, sweet, and just a testament to a good friendship and casting for their Spiderman film imo.
While us shippers and Tomdaya fans may love the press tour for other reasons lol, I don't think that the general public has an issue with the press tours with TZ being together and in love etc. I think most think it's cute? 😅
Granted, I will say that if you do feel like you're having a very hard time separating an actor's character from their real-life persona, and it's hard for you to see them disappear in certain roles, then maybe it might a sign that you're following a celebrity a little too closely, and it may be a good idea to perhaps lessen the amount of time you spend tracking and following that celebrity/actor. 🤷🏾‍♀️
Re: Fans...
I def think that SOME fans get a little too invested with the lives of their faves, to the point where it can become a bit parasocial, but like I mentioned earlier, you can always take a bit of a break, and try not to be so obsessive.
Re: Public Backlash
While I def understand the concern regarding the gp and any backlash on TZ and their projects, the truth of the matter is, a lot of actors get bad reviews on their projects also, but it's not an automatic death. Many Actors have recovered from bad projects and have gone on to do wonderful films that had critical acclaim. ☺️

I hate the modernity in 2019 little women. It's fine if you're doing a bridgerton or Dickinson type of thing. But in little women it just feels wrong.
Like how jo and laurie are so touchy.
Or how it the scene where meg twists her foot at the ball and they bring her home, jo starts to strip down her clothes right in front of him. And marmee is all like, call me mother! Mind you, this is the first time laurie has met all of them.
None of it is time appropriate. I won't talk about the costumes or loose hair cause it has already been covered by costume reviewers on youtube. (The movie did NOT deserve the oscar for costumes.)
Also, am I the only one who doesn't like the casting in this movie?!
Saoirse Ronan is fine. She's no Winona Ryder but that's okay.
Florence is an excellent actress but with her heavy voice it absolutely took me out of the moment whenever she played a 12 year old amy. It just looked like a fully grown adult woman, in a child's frock, acting like a child.
Timothee chalamet was meh. Or more correctly, the writing for laurie was meh. And he does not look like a father of a child at the end of the movie.
Laura Dern. I think she was good but the writing failed her at times. There was no gravitas to her character. She was too smiley. And too modern.
Emma Watson feels like emma watson in all her roles.
Rest of the characters, beth, professor bhaer... utterly forgettable.
Also it's my personal view that little women as a story works best in a linear format. It's a journey you go on with the girls and see them grow in more ways than one. Which is why the back and forth between childhood and adulthood was lost on me.
Hi, anon! That's a lot to unpack! XD
I think the modernity is jarring to me because it is so so intentional. Like it is screaming LIKE ME BECAUSE I'M HYPE AND MODERN. And at that point, make it a modern day version. But Sony wanted not modern day version, no, Sony wanted juicy juicy American classic period drama cash grab! This, in my opinion, explains many, many things about this movie. The weird meta non meta ending, Jo is asexual but she's also devastated that she cannot marry Laurie, yay girlboss Amy but also you should like her because she cannot be liberated like Jo, etc, etc, etc.
I agree with your assessment of the characters, mostly. I actually think Ronan would have been a far better casting for Amy and Pugh for Jo. There's a heaviness of presence and a matter-of-factness to Florence Pugh that Saoirse Ronan utterly lacks (her efforts at appearing rough and careless remind me of this:
Tumblr media
But all that sort of ethereal yet sharp vibe that Amy has? would have suited well (and she's a natural blonde too!)
But. You know. Greta ships Saorise/Timothee, I guess.
I also very much liked Eliza Scanlen as Beth. She was given very little to work with, but she left an impression on me (we can debate till tomorrow if the characterization was right, but that's another matter).
I actually think Little Women can be done in altered timeline; the 2018 modern movie, IMO, did it well. It took as pivotal element the castles in the air (the dreams the sisters and Laurie have as teenagers and who they think they will be in a decade), focused on Jo as the main narrative pov (a story built on flashbacks needs someone to be the one reminiscing the past, generally speaking, we don't talk about Tenet), and kept working on how the past shaped the present, and how it can also bring a light on the way to the future. The problem with the way 2019 does the altered timeline is that it is unfocused and meandering. It doesn't know why it is going back and forth between past and present. In this movie it is just a gimmick because Christopher Nolan does it, I guess, and that makes his movies masterpieces or something. Some of the transitions are forced and hackneyed (from Beth's recovery to Beth's death) and others are just... random (from a sleeping Amy to a sleeping Beth).

The people claiming that Timmy has never been this way with other costars must be new here. I’d say he was even more touchy with Saoirse than he is with Taylor and they’re just friends too. These actors spend months together filming and then for press. Its only natural for a solid trusting friendship to establish. I’m not saying their chemistry is fake for promo but it’s certainly purposely displayed for that reason. Timothee is like the most private celebrity ever, I don’t understand why people think he would come out about a rs on a red carpet 😭

my opinion on little women 2019 now that im in the last 10 minutes or so is that saoirse and timothee have more chemistry and i like angst so i found their one tragic scene more compelling than anything that happened between amy and laurie Sorry like none of the romance plots were that well developed at all which ifl might be the point but i think it is just all too terrible and i thought having jo wind up w some random guy is so pointless it really just feels like right chemistry wrong social expectations or whatever bc if i were in that situation i would rather die than be in love w someone who was in love with my sister for ?? seven years or whatevrt the fuck like im sorry i woild NOT BELIEVE THAT U LIKED ME and iirc the original author was like pissed that people assumed jo and laurie woild end up together and then made amy and laurie happen and well i never read the book so this is solely how i view it via this one movie adaptation but it sucks and i wouldve hated it more if florence pugh wasnt such a good actress i liked her bit about marriage being an economic proposition anyway it was okay and in theory ohhhh jo and laurie would’ve neeeeeeever worked or whatever but in this movie they have good chemistry and jo didn’t end up w a woman anyway or whatever people on tiktok were claiming re her being a wlw (like she didn’t even have a girl best friend or somethint to work with what am i supposed to pine for) etc etc etc in closing i dont really wanna die on any hill like idc about jo and laurie vs amy and laurie that much but the relationship between the sisters was interesting

“Little Women” is an engaging adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel that depicts a very heart-warming story of four sisters. It features an amazing ensemble cast, including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, and Timothee Chalamet. Besides the remarkable performance of these actors and actresses, the film has a beautiful artistic style in terms of cinematography and soundtrack. The back-and-forth timeline also signifies the growth of each character throughout the years.
Tumblr media
1. Meg March
She was the eldest of the March sisters. As a young lady, she had always been fascinated by luxurious things. But as she matured, she understood that contentment was the key to genuine happiness. I could say that her character taught me so many life lessons. I learned how to be grateful for simple blessings. She made me recognize that real wealth did not lie in money. I appreciated a lifestyle that emphasizes the beauty in simplicity. Indeed, simple living offers numerous benefits to individuals' health, happiness, and life enjoyment.
2. Jo March
She was my favorite character among the March sisters. I was so proud of her when she pursued her passion for writing, instead of marrying someone else. I recognized that women had a hard time speaking their minds during those times but unlike Jo, she wasn't afraid to stand up for women's significant role in society. That's why I adored her dedication and perseverance, insisting on living a meaningful life. She also inspired me to fulfill my dream as a good writer.
3. Beth March
She was the most relatable character among the March sisters. I felt so connected to her personality and interests. Like her, I was an introverted person who achieves enthusiasm by spending time alone. I always preferred staying inside the house instead of having a social life. Moreover, I discovered that she was fond of singing and playing the piano. In this matter, we had similarities because I also loved singing but I didn't know how to play any kind of instrument. Music had always been an important part of my life too.
4. Amy March
She was the youngest of the March sisters. To be honest, my impression of her character was a combination of love and hate. I disliked her for being selfish and ambitious but at the same time, I admired her for being artistic and realistic. She took everything upon herself to provide for her family instead of going after her dreams. Although she was so immature during her childhood days, it was proven that she had a lot of character development as an adult.
Tumblr media
I admired the love story of John and Meg from the beginning until the end of the film. They made me realize that marriage wasn't always easy but it's well worth fighting for. It was inevitable that all couples had ups and downs. However, they proved that good communication serves as an effective way of having healthy relationships. It allowed both parties to develop trust and respect as well as to attain a clearer understanding of each other's point of view. Hence, I believed that love was the greatest force in the universe.
Tumblr media
The long-lasting friendship between Laurie and Jo was incredibly beautiful. Honestly, I cried my heart out when they didn't end up together. I would never deny that I wished for them to be a couple. Nonetheless, I felt so relieved when Jo rejected Laurie's proposal since I had so many realizations after analyzing their conversation. She always knew he secretly loved her. That's why she always hoped that he wouldn't bring it up. I felt like she tried to love him back but still, she failed. I believed they were meant to be platonic soulmates, not to be romantic lovers.
Tumblr media
From my own perspective, the relationship between Laurie and Amy was a little bit rushed. I wished I had gotten to see more of their love story. It seemed like Laurie only shifted his love from Jo to Amy since he wanted to be married to one of the March sisters. Laurie's feelings for Amy would be more convincing if he had more interactions with her than Jo. Nevertheless, they were probably destined to fall in love with each other.
Tumblr media
Based on my interpretation, Friedrich and Jo never got married. It was only a depiction of the ending of her book, not her real life. However, I enjoyed the chemistry between them. I couldn't stop myself from laughing when Friedrich roasted Jo about her writing style but at the same time, I found them adorable together. I was so glad because she had finally found a man who supports her passion for writing.
Tumblr media
Beth's death was the most heartbreaking part of the story. In this version, the bond between Jo and Beth felt stronger to me. I would never forget when they went on a trip to the seashore, hoping the fresh air would help Beth get better. I truly admired Jo for taking care of her without any complaints. They made me recognize that sisters would always be connected by the heart. Indeed, nothing in this world could underestimate the power of sisterhood.
Tumblr media
As a woman, I appreciate the empowering central message of the film. It highlights a lot of influential things such as family, marriage, friendship, morality, independence, and women's rights. Furthermore, it celebrates the hearts, minds, and souls of women during those times. I truly adore how the four sisters embrace their femininity by recognizing their intrinsic strengths and taking responsibility for their dreams.

I followed all the Dunkirk guys and at one point I noticed that Barry wasn’t following Tom Glynn Carney on instagram even though Tom had recently (at the time, probably around 2021?) posted a selfie of them together. I also noticed Barry and Jack weren’t following each other even though they had worked together before Dunkirk and I had seen a lot of tweets of them interacting, and there’s pictures of them at the premieres where it looks like they get along. I thought it was weird that he didn’t follow them/have any posts with them, but he did have a couple of pictures with Saoirse from events and some pictures with Timothee (I think they are/were friends, but I don’t know that he was closer with him than with Tom). It felt like he only wanted to follow and post about famous people.
Then, around the time eternals came out, he kept tweeting things about getting followers and retweeting things asking to get cast on stuff. He started annoying me and I unfollowed him 😭💀 But yeah, it doesn’t surprise me that he’s choosing to live in LA (I’m assuming?) with his pop star girlfriend over spending time with his child
I think he does want like… major success and part of it is he comes from a difficult background tbh. I think acting isn’t like a calling™️ for him per se like for many of the Brit and Irish actors but rather like in large part a way to make real money and he’s legit fucking good at it so yeah good for him. But yes he likes the celeb and money aspects too. So does Timmy tho, very much so. Liking the fame and celeb aspects doesn’t make you a worse actor. In fact it might make you more of a movie star. What’s wild about Barry’s case tho is I get he’s good and I get he likes the fame but how does one become a leading man with that face lol like truly that’s a special case study.

Movie Chronicles
Mama Mia!, written by Catherine Johnson and directed by Phyllida Lloyd starring Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, and Pierce Brosnan just to name a few. The film incorporates popular Swedish 70’s band ABBA’s music while following the journey of Sophie, a bride to be as she tries to pin down just who her father is. The film was released in 2008 and was the fifth highest grossing film of the year, coming in at 609.8 million USD.
Tumblr media
Growing up this film was a fundamental part of my childhood, and even into my adult life it has left its mark. My mother was big into musicals so when the film was released she immediately watched it with my sister and I. Although we were too young to comprehend much of what was happening, the soundtrack was what kept us hooked. We continued watching the film for the music, but became infatuated with the plot. We saw my younger sister in the main character Sophie, so to this day when I hear “Thank You For The Music”, I always remember Mama Mia!.
Although I don’t watch the film quite as often as I once did when I was a young child, it still holds a special place in my childhood. I plan on keeping the tradition going one day when I’m a mother, and hope my kids will find comfort and love the movie quite as much as I did.
When my mom and I discussed how this film impacted my childhood she had very similar recollections of the same memories I shared. Singing along to the soundtrack in the car, dancing to the movie in the living room, and always seeing my sister in the character Sophie.
The Hunger Games, first a novel written by Suzanne Collins, and turned into a film and directed by Gary Ross, was released in 2012, and starred Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutchinson, Liam Hemswoth and others. The film grossed 694.4 million USD and was followed by three more films in the franchise. The disturbing backstory behind the film follows Katniss Everdeen, as she is forced to kill 23 other tributes in order to save herself, but things get complicated when she takes a liking toward the other half of her district team, Peeta Mellark.
For reference I was eight years old when the film premiered. My mom who had read all the available books in the series at the time insisted on taking me, her first grade aged daughter to see the movie in theaters. I had no idea what I was walking into, and as most young kids would probably be disturbed by 24 kids killing each other on the big screen, I found it to be fascinating, and even to this day it is my favorite movie.
The whole franchise had me captivated for years to come, and I became invested in the on and off screen lives of the actors. Jennifer Lawrence is my favorite actress because of The Hunger Games and I now see any film she stars in. I probably binge the franchise at least three times a year, so I definitely still like viewing the movie and haven’t moved past it.

Lady Bird, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, is an angsty, coming of age film, following “Lady Bird”, a 17 year-old girl growing up in Sacramento, CA, in 2002. This film premiered in 2017 and grossed 79 million USD. The film stars actors such as Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet.
I began viewing this film in my early teenage years, and found parts of the story to be very relatable. At this time I had just transferred to catholic school and wasn’t fond of it. Lady Bird also attends a catholic school that she doesn’t particularly enjoy. She is also a somewhat awkward character who feels behind in her teenage experiences, and that's what I found most relatable. She also butts heads with her mother throughout the entire movie, especially over college, and during my junior/senior year of high school, tensions were high between me and my parents for the same reason.
Although I don’t watch the film as often as I once did I still appreciate the importance it had at one point in my life, and although I’m no longer the person I was when I once related to the film, I still enjoy watching it remembering the point in my life I was when I loved the movie.
This was a movie I watched alone most times, so when I talked to my mom about it she didn't have much to say, but I decided to get my sisters point of view on it and she remembered the point in my life where I would watch it on repeat. She agreed when I told her how I felt like many of the experiences Lady Bird goes through directly related to my life. She got a better understanding of why I enjoyed watching the film so often.

The Hangover written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and filmed by Todd Phillips is a comedy that follows five best friends on a bachelor party trip to Vegas. A lot of crazy turns of events lead to the groom getting lost, and as the wedding approaches the rest of the guys are forced to try to remember the night they last had. The 2009 film starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifanackis, Ed Helms and more grossed 469.3 million USD.
This movie has become a comfort movie for me and is a go to for my boyfriend and I. We watch this movie probably once a month and never get sick of it. Although the movie itself doesn't hold a ton of meaning to me, the memories associated with it certainly do. My family and I also enjoy watching it so the film just reminds me of laughs with my loved ones.
When chatting with my boyfriend about the film, he immediately agreed this was our movie. He noted that sharing the love for a funny movie like this one made easing into our relationship a lot easier as we shared a similar humor.

Film Review
The film I watched was Lady Bird.
Tumblr media
Who is the director?
The director is Greta Gerwig. Along with being an oscar-nominated director, she also is an actress, playwright, and screenwriter. Lady Bird was actually her first film she directed solo. She not only directed the film, but also wrote the script for the “highly acclaimed” movie. The movie stars Saoirse Ronan, the fan favorite- Timothee Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, among other great actors. Greta Gerwig took inspiration from her upbringing in Sacramento, California as the location plays a big role in the film’s plot. Other work she directed was the film Little Women (2019) and the screenplay, Nights and Weekends (2008) in which she starred alongside fellow actor Joe Swanburg. She also directed the upcoming movie Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling which comes out sometime in 2023. Overall, Greta Gerwig is very talented, has a unique perspective, and still has a great future ahead of her in the entertainment and film industry.

What do you identify as unique to the female perspective and the ‘female gaze’ in the film?
I feel like initially from Lady Bird’s perspective, she correlates success to being pretty and having money. Because in her view, if you have those qualities, you don’t have any problems. In the film, Jenna was the “model” for this view because she seemed to have it all- money, beauty, and contentment. All that Lady Bird seeked to find. And because Lady Bird didn’t grow up in wealth like Jenna did she seeked to live as if she did. She even lied about it to keep up with that mentality. Although her mother explicitly says, just because you are successful doesn’t mean you are happy.

On the other hand, In the film we are also shown two strong women (Lady Bird and her mother) with big and at times conflicting personalities. But what makes them conflicting is that they possess similar qualities like stubbornness and strong-mindedness- which is not necessarily a bad thing, but when you put two women in a film like that together they are bound to “butt heads” because they don’t seem to leave enough room for each other. Which I feel like is a common taboo among women in general. That we need to seemingly always have everything together and that if we aren’t and show a bit of vulnerability then we seem crazy.
“Money is not life’s report card. Being successful doesn’t mean anything in and of itself. It just means you’re successful, but it doesn’t mean you are happy.” -Marion McPherson

What rite of passage in the protagonist(s) life/lives does this story explore? What fresh perspective, if any, does the director bring to this story? Are sexual or gender taboos traversed in the process?
The rite of passage that Lady Bird lives through is her senior year of highschool and figuring out her identity and what she wants and where she wants to end up. From the very beginning Lady Bird explicitly shows that she is not interested in going to college anywhere near Sacramento. Meaning anywhere near her home life and her mother. I get it, when I was applying for colleges I didn’t want to be too close to home, I wanted to explore and grow into myself. There was also a time where I didn’t think college was for me. My mom insisted that I had to go in order to be successful. I felt trapped like there weren't any options and it made me not want to go more. I feel like a lot of teens live in a bubble and think their world is bigger than the outside world. It’s tunnel vision. You only see what you see. When someone forms an opinion or makes a decision for you it’s the end of the world, every little thing is the end of the world. I feel like the fact that Lady Bird hated the idea of going to college in state was that it was her mother’s decision not hers. Not because of economic factors, not because of the college itself, or anything. She just didn’t like that her mom made it seem like there was no other choice. She felt trapped and I saw that and felt that because I have before felt that way too. I think if her mother gave her options or provided a middle path, Lady Bird would have had more freedom and less pressure to decide where she was going to end up. This decision put her in a spiral, seeking for identity that she actually already had and because of it she rebelled, but that could have also been the nature of her age. I don’t blame Lady Bird for her rebellion, I would have done the same at her age and I understand and accept that moments like that lead you to where you are and eventually where you need to be.
Although things unfolded the way they did, she ended up realizing what was really important to her- Sacramento, her mom, her family, and her best friend. She didn’t need any more than that, even though she spent her whole film searching for that. I think the ending was beautiful in her realization that she had everything that she needed, even though she didn’t have “that” much in her eyes. And realized that “not much” was actually enough. The teacher even pointed out that her essay seemed like she had a lot of love for Sacramento which she shrugged and brushed it off which was true. She loved Sacramento and overlooked Sacramento, where Sacremento really represented her mother and everything she did for her. At the end she thanked her, what seemed like a long awaited thank you.
As for sexual taboos that transversed in the film is that idea that many still believe to be true is that your first time needs to be special or with someone special. When in reality it doesn’t need to be that is a lot of pressure for one moment or two people. I think it was hilarious when she realized that Kyle wasn’t a virgin and said “Who the fuck is on top for their first time.” I feel like it is a common theme growing up because of films and media portraying sex. Especially for the first time to be this magical moment when it isn’t always. Yes for some it is, but realistically it isn’t always. I feel like this realization was almost the turning point for Lady Bird shattering her world she wanted to have that she knew deep down she could never and that it wasn’t right for her. It brought her back to reality because she realized that she wanted a life she didn’t deep down she didn’t want, could achieve, or need to be satisfied. She realized everything she needed, she already had. It gave her a reality check that she needed.
Does this film shed new light on the mother/daughter and family relationships? How?
Although I do not necessarily think that the film shed a “new” light on mother/daughter and family relationships, I think the film depicted a “more common than you think relationship” while also being able to view  both sides. I like how you can see why Lady Bird decides to rebel and why her mom continually pushes for her staying in California. I think the film did a great job shedding light of both perspectives of both mother and daughter. Because many films now only show a one sided relationship. You could really see where they were both coming from and how alike they truly were. Her mother wanted the best for her and Lady Bird wanted what she thought was best for her.
Tumblr media
Describe the most startling/indelible/breakthrough scene of the film.
I think the breakthrough scene of the film was definitely the end. When everything came together for her, she finally took a moment to realize, accept, and appreciate the life she spent trying to rebel from. I think every moment of the film led her up perfectly to this moment. But what truly shocked her was when she finally was alone in New York and ended up in the hospital after a night of drinking. She realized shortly after arriving in New York, wait this is it? This is what I’ve been fighting for? And the moment when she called her mom was the “you told me so” moment. But instead of fighting, she surrendered and thanked her mom. What seemed long awaited. Sometimes we have all been there, wanting what we can’t have. There is such a desire in that. And a longing. To dream and for it to come true, but when in reality if it were meant for us, it would be. It is almost like “astronaut syndrome”. When astronauts arrive on the moon, they are like what? I have spent my whole time training for this moment and now what's next. Lady Bird could have kept on living in denial, but her growth shined through at that moment which definitely took a lot of strength and courage to come to a place to accept that her mom was right and that she actually appreciated Sacramento. In a way, Sacramento represented her mom. You could see at moments she actually played devil's advocate a little. She knew in her heart her mom wasn’t crazy, she even defended her to others. She knew in her heart Sacramento wasn’t that bad and she even wrote about it. At that scene, I could almost feel the weight of the wall she built fall down and she finally was free, a free bird if you will. I think it was especially heartwarming to see the little montage of Sacramento and to see the realization in her face you could tell she really meant and felt her thank you to her mom.

Has the film received the recognition it deserved? Why or why not?
I feel like the film did receive quite a little bit of recognition due to the famous actors in it like Timothee Chalamet and Siaorse Ronan. I would see memes about it occasionally on Instagram and Twitter. Honestly I rewatched the movie for this assignment and I was able to see the film in a new light. I feel like that new light that I saw, was the recognition it should have deserved. I think now, the film is more about who is in it rather than how it actually is. I now have a greater appreciation for the movie, their depiction of a realistic mother daughter relationship and the fact that it is relatable for anyone, not only mothers and daughters. It makes me appreciate my life and my decisions and where I am at because of the life I have been given, although I didn’t always appreciate it. It is a good reminder of that and I would definitely recommend the film with noting its deeper themes.

"Following a seven day match against the German team Heidelberg Harriers in 1953, the Harriers Captain, Rudolf Brand, proposed marriage to [Gwendolyn]. She promptly concussed him with her Cleansweep Five." - HP Wiki
WANTED:  A Rudolf for a Gwen; a Timothee for a Saoirse.
This ad is for a playful, love-hate, "Quidditch" rivals ad for a 1950s Harry Potter "Riddle Era" Jcink RP. The site in question, Gods & Monsters, follows the rise of Tom Riddle and his death eaters, and the tensions that follow as suspense and suspicion rise.
Gwendolyn Morgan is a young Quidditch player, looking to find where she fits into things (and mostly just wants to play the sport she love). Rudolf, loud, flirtatious and frustratingly charming, seems to constantly be both in her way and putting a kink in her plans. She hates him. Maybe she loves him a little too and hates that more.
For more information on Rudolf, and the relationship, you can find the full ad here.
