Love this character analysis! You're absolutely right about them being two sides of the same coin. In a way, both of them are invisible to those around them (Zenji physically, Haku socially). It seems like their friendship started out of necessity but then blossomed into genuine companionship.

hello. i am. a fan of them. I think I might be one of the biggest fans of it in fact, considering the fact that I run that zenji blog. Oops!

The gayest thing you can call another man is Old Friend.

No but ships aside, Haku and Zenji are fascinating. Just like...

Starting with the obvious of Haku being the only one who could see Zenji for a good six months, or the fact that Haku puts in so much effort for Zenji all the time, or the fact that they reference each other a lot, or so on so forth. It's so extremely clear to me that they both care about each other in one way or another, and it's clear that they're just like. Paired?

Which is to say, Subaru is very accommodating to Haku, and very kind. He treats Haku as though he's the captain instead of Subaru himself, and he gives a lot of leeway for things Haku does in general. This is partially due to his own secrets (in my opinion), but Subaru is really like, almost hands off with Haku. He hypes him up when he can and doesn't really ever speak bad about him. Zenji, on the other hand, is welcoming but not necessarily like... unconditionally so?

Haku is a lout. He's uncouth, or ungentlemanly, or stupid or whatever other adjectives Zenji has used for him again and again. Zenji criticizes Haku (sometimes unfairly) and hypes him up in equal measures. You know Zenji's compliments towards Haku are sincere then, because you can see what he says when he DOESN'T have something to compliment Haku on. And Haku, in turn, is the same with Zenji. Haku is more likely to say some out of pocket comment towards Zenji, but Haku in general is really more of an Actions guy.

Which is to say, holding an umbrella up for Zenji in the rain. Recording him, even as the students around them call Haku gross. Editing them, posting them. Replying to comments. Managing the channel. Giving him advice, telling him what sort of videos he wants to see, listening to his pieces (sometimes), telling him what to give MC for Valentines day, etc. Haku isn't as Compliment-y as Zenji, but he certainly shows his affection (platonically) towards Zenji in a multitude of ways.

And like... If you think about it, yes, Haku is the only one Zenji had, but in some weird way, Zenji is that for Haku too. Haku is a transfer into Hotarubi, and though he's vice-captain, he doesn't really seem to Enjoy that position. And like, we already know that other transfers have gossip surrounding them, and pairing that with Haku's vague statements about his backstory, we can see he's like. An outsider. Just in general, Haku views himself as an outsider, though he's good at masquerading as someone in the in-group. But with Zenji, he's important, but not in a way that has too many Stakes. You know? Like.

Haku cares about Zenji and puts in effort, but he can also just. Leave. Just walk away in the middle of Zenji's song, or tune it out, or any number of things. He can ignore Zenji if he wanted. It's fine. Sometimes Zenji ignores him, too. It's a casual thing, but not in the sense that it's shallow?

Haku and Zenji fall into a category I like to call 'opposite sides of the same coin'. Both are deeply lonely at their core, but express it in opposite ways and embody it in opposite ways. Haku keeps his cards close to his chest and Zenji expresses them openly. Haku is surrounded by people and still feels like an outsider. Zenji is surrounded by, most of the time, nobody, and feels perfectly connected to them all. Haku thinks more than he feels, Zenji feels more than he thinks. They balance each other out in a very, very interesting way, and I think like. Just small parts here and there really stick out to me. Haku always phrases things in a way that includes Zenji without tipping his existence off to others. Haku never slips up about him, never tells others unless Zenji is ready for them to know. He covers for Zenji even at his own cost. Even MC frequently, and I mean frequently, fucks up regarding Zenji. But Haku doesn't. I bet that's comforting to him.

It's just like!!! Man!!! MAN!!! IS ANYONE STILL READING? I FEEL INSANE. The line where Haku says that there's 'Somebody he wants to help' and that's why he works so hard for everybody? Being implied to be Zenji? Or the fact that Zenji doesn't want to move on, and Haku doesn't make him? Or how Zenji trusts Haku So Goddamn Much? OR LIKE. AUGH. IT HURTS. THEY'RE SO!!!!!!!

I'm really so excited for the new chapter. I really want to see them interact more, or at least see Zenji nagging Haku more. It's so cute... Haku teasing Zenji too! Which he does a lot! And Zenji falling for it every time. It's a penname, Haku! A pen name! How many times does he have to say it? Probably eight billion more bc Haku is just doing it to mess with him. AUHGH.

Witty Priest: Lotus: Pure heart, Rest, Sacred, Eloquence, Serenity, and Love that leaves. The three Koi in his card represent the stages of life, from birth to death.

Unworldly Respite: Juniper berries: Protection, Trust, Salvation. White Chrysanthemum: Truth, Adoration, Sincere heart. OR White Gerbera: Unsullied heart. Red anemone: I love you. White Camellia: Perfect beauty, Impeccable charm, and Supreme loveliness.

Ordinary Happiness:

Amana Edulis - "luck will come to you." or Anemone americana - "expectation and joy."

Heliopsis Helianthoides - Longing, adoration, seduction.

Blue Roses: Symbolise the impossible.

White Roses: sincere respect, innocence. Usually, white and blue roses are given as a gift. The blue roses in there would represent blessings while the white ones represent love.

White baby's breath: dreaminess

Veronica: Honor, fidelity, bright home Periwinkle: Happy memories.

Pink rose: warm heart, having love, pledge of love, happiness, gratitude, elegance, and prettiness. Pink rose petals: "Have love," "My heart you only know." FYI for this part: There's no actual Japanese meaning I could find for the petals, but because it's a part of the pink roses, let's be delulu and take it as such.

Additionally, on Haku's vest, there are: Vines with flowers: Beauty and growth intertwined. Vines with leaves: Renewal and continuous personal development. Also, "Good marriage" if the vine ends up being the Chinese Creeper.

sho watches it happen from the sidelines. cap won't have recognized it until it's too late, just like sho years ago. he hadn't realized and hadn't realized and hadn't realized and then leo was immovably part of his life.

leo's good at that. finding exactly the right place to get himself in and then before you've realized it, he's blocked himself in and there's no way to get him back out again. not that sho's ever put any effort into trying.

his lived experience and the outside perspective lets him catch onto what's happening far sooner than he had for himself. after the takeru case, leo needles cap into getting the three of them r&r permits, under the premise that leo absolutely needs to help cap get a phone case. and somehow that works.

and then leo starts hanging out in the garage more often, despite his complaints about the noise. he complains about the way cap handles paperwork and actually makes himself useful with it. eventually, it's stranger not to have leo come by while they're working on cars.

and sho quietly takes notice. this is the point. leo's dug himself in and cap remains oblivious. his expression when they chase after him in the prison van proves that.

then leo starts asking sho questions about what he's heard from hyde about tohma, and despite being a first year and not quite as nosy as leo, sho does know about his transfer. and somehow sho realizes that despite being aware of what was happening, he'd managed to be oblivious, too.

leo has dug himself in further than sho had thought.

the way leo researches tohma is the same as how he'd researched subaru. and while it's frankly embarrassing to watch some of what leo does when he interacts with subaru, while sho would rather he just drop it, he gets it. he could put his foot down harder, but leo won't be satisfied until he knows for absolute certain there's nothing suspicious about subaru.

and he won't be satisfied until he knows that cap is safe from tohma. it's just a matter of whether cap will let him run his course.

This is a little silly, but Taiga HC where he thinks he has a harem of people he likes... (+ what others think of it, below the cut)

Reminder that this is mostly just a headcanon with some character analysis and contains minor spoilers.

Taiga HCs

So this HC stems from how Taiga is most likely emotionally constipated (potentially because he had a rough childhood, but this is a topic for another day) and just doesn't know how to express his fondness to someone. In a nutshell, I will divide this into 3 parts:

People he finds fun to mess around with (Haru)

People he finds cute and is genuinely fond of (Romeo)

A mix of both (this is MC lol)

I think Ritsu will eventually find his place in there, likely in number 1 (there's a deciding factor for this, which i will get into), but to make it simple I'll only take one example for each. People that don't make it in that list are at risk of taking a bullet in the head- (he may not look it, but he's quite distrustful)

So, what's the deciding factor? Taiga only likes people that he thinks important enough to remember and will assign them nicknames. I am aware that he calls others (such as Rui, Ed) by nicknames but he doesn't care about them lol... It probably had something to do with whatever happened in The Clash that he's not fond of them.

The longer he knew someone, and if that person can put up with him, they will be assigned into one of those 3 points. He has a hard time remembering people's names, so those that can stand him is rewarded with their own nickname HAHAH. Congratulations for putting up with the devil!!

Let's get into each points one by one.

1. People he finds fun to mess around with (Haru)

I can see why people theorize how Haru used to be in Sinostra. Pre-clash HC that Taiga used to borrow money from Haru, and that's the start of their relationship. Taiga borrows them to gamble and Haru just keeps giving him money because he's THAT nice. Can't forget how poor boy is always broke as the captain of Jabberwock :")

Eventually Taiga gives calls him Harry (because it sounds cooler, idk ask him-) and he thinks Haru's reactions are entertaining.

Haru being in Jabberwock doesn't bother him, if anything it makes it more fun to 'get food' whenever he feels like it... Unfortunately for him, Jabberwock Haru isn't as nice as Sinostra Haru, and he doesn't give up 'his children' as easily as he'd give up his money.

Which brings us to their current relationship, a tag game of cat and mouse. I think Taiga is still somewhat fond of Haru, but he finds his persistance annoying. Surely he can spare an anomaly or two?

So Taiga still bothers him from time to time until he gives in, and until that time comes, he relishes in Haru's funny reactions.

Honorable mention: Ritsu

With enough time, I believe Ritsu belongs in this category as well. His interactions with Taiga is so funny, I love it... Taiga is just tired of dealing with this overachiever kid that only speaks law language. We will see how their relationship developin Episode 8 and beyond!

Taiga: See twerp, this is why you don't have a nickname yet. Ritsu: ???

2. People he finds cute and is genuinely fond of (Romeo)

Let's start this off with (one of) the infamous Taiga homescreen line-

To be honest, this is where the HC idea starts from LMAOO i think he's half joking here. Emphasizing on half, because the other half of him is dead serious. He thinks they're married. Because being business partners means you're partners for life I guess (why is he so silly...)

We don't know how they got to this point, so small theory time! Taiga probably helped Romeo at his lowest by proposing (heh) to make a gambling business together in Darkwick. Because when you're stuck in there, might as well make cash, no? We know Romeo hates gambling, but he's willing to take the chance with Taiga. This is likely why Taiga is the captain despite being irresponsible.

I'm just guessing now... But Romeo's persistence to make cash, despite abhoring gamble itself, is likely what solidifed his presence in Taiga's mind. Romeo rose to the challenge and Taiga finds it admirable.

Because Romeo has been with him for the longest, Taiga calls him Lulu (affectionate) and thinks he's funny. And cute. He's also very dependable. Above all, Taiga trusts him and this is personally a big deal for Taiga. So of course they're married, Taiga logic!

Taiga: Lulu's cheating on me. Ritsu: Understood, I shall get the divorce papers ready. Romeo: What the FUCK did you just say?

Ritsu is too serious to get the hint and he'll constantly bring it up like "Are you sure you don't want me to help with your divorce?" But Romeo shuts him down everytime while yelling "WHO is divorcing?? The only person fit to marry me is myself!!" While Taiga is laughing in the distance, like the menace he is....

Taiga is the tired dad (with dad jokes) and Romeo is the loud, nagging mom-

3. A mix of both (MC)

(I will refer to MC in 3rd person)

MC is in a tough situation here lol (as if she's not in enough danger already), because as the inspector she has to work with Taiga whether she likes it or not. On the other hand, Taiga hasn't known the MC for long enough to be attached. Yet. not until we get him to higher affinity levels or maybe in later episodes

But if you realized something, MC starts with a similar situation as Haru. As we can tell from area convos, Taiga occasionally borrows (read: robs) MC of her money to gamble. She's under the circumstances of having to deal with Taiga, but she doesn't have the backbone to challenge him in the ways Romeo could (which is understandable IMO)

So why does she have her own point? Well... (we're about to enter self-indulgent territory here)

We know from Taiga's high affection lines that he eventually becomes fond enough to MC to give her a nickname, which is kitty cat. He calls her little lost kitten in their (official) first meeting. It's cute nickname, I must say... But, why a cat?

An explanation I can think of is how Darkwick operates with cats most of the time. We're not sure what they are, but I'm sure Taiga has seen enough to know they exist. He doesn't care about them, well, at least until he meets MC.

In their first meeting, Taiga thinks she looks funny. A scared little kitten, like the ones of Darkwick that always ran away from him whenever he gets too close. People usually steer clear from him, so MC is an odd case for him. She's clearly scared, so why stick around? (he forgot that she's obligated to...)

This is where another one of my HC comes in: Taiga becomes fond of cats!! He thinks they're funny and cute. Sadly, cats are too scared to get near him lmao he doesn't understand why though. Good thing he got the MC :)

Because he eventually find cats funny and cute, this extends to MC too. Therefore, Taiga likes to mess with MC and is somewhat fond of her in strange ways. (Maybe bullying is his love language idk)

Conclusion?

Taiga is silly, I want to munch him. Also I gave up trying to fix him (HELP), so I decided to dissect his character interactions instead... there's probably more to come in the future, hopefully I can articulate them well enough to share.

Subaru's birthday is February 20th! So, as expected(by me and maybe a few other people) the next card is going to be his birthday Tarot card! I'm not sure if it's coming out later today or on the 20th but it's coming this week either way!

How are we feeling about the pics being under the cuts so far? I'm not sure how I feel about it lol but it's working well enough for now. Hopefully it's working for the anon who asked and everyone else too 👍🏾 as usual, card stats at the end! Q: What is good about your dorm? A: The atmosphere is similar to my hometown and it’s comfortable. And then, the air on the premises is so clear that at night there are times when you can see the Aurora. If I’m here, I feel like my soul is in harmony with nature. 

Q:  Do you have any concerns with missions? A: Actually, I want to be sent on a higher ranking mission. I train every day to make that wish come true. Definitely someday…… I will be able to subjugate a demon with my hands. 

Q: Where would you like to go if you have your R&R permit approved? A: I want to go to a restaurant that Kaito said “All the Japanese boys like.” If I remember correctly…… it was called Jiro style ramen. Since there’s not a restaurant like this in my hometown in England, I’m really looking forward to it. 

Q: What do you think about the ghoul(s) in your house? A: From the day I transferred to this school, Kaito was my first friend and has been a really good friend to me. I’m also very grateful to Tohma for all the help. Now, all that’s left is for Jin to fulfil his duties, but….

Rumor has it the two of them are colluding with Darkwick, I heard they’re doing something nasty. Eh? Luca? …… I don’t know that bastard with an unrivaled face.

Q: What’s your favorite place on campus? A: A fishing spot. Since it’s in the forest, no one usually comes there. How do you get there from the main building……? ….. I won’t know until I go back to the dorm.

Q: Where would you like to go if you have your R&R permit approved? A: Mount Hotaka. Ah, it’s in the Northern Alps. It’s definitely far from here, but…… I’d take the car so it’s not a problem. 

Q: What do you think about the ghoul(s) in your house? A: We’re just some random people who obtained power by chance. But, clawing their way up like their life depends on it…… those guys have that kind of nature.

Q: What is your favorite subject? A: No~thing. You just have to memorize the textbooks. It’s so easy it’s boring. I had high hopes because it was supposed to be specialized study of anomalies. 

Q: What’s your favorite place on campus? A: The bath. When I enrolled, there wasn’t even a bath in my dorm’s shower room. I had to use my own money to remodel. It’s honestly ridiculous, right? 

Q: Where would you like to go if you have your R&R permit approved? A: The club. Since I entered Darkwick, I haven’t been able to go out at all. I’m so stressed I’m gonna go insane. 

Q: What do you think about the ghoul(s) in your house? A: No matter how you look at it, Cap is a himbo. Eh~, Sho…….. he’s my slave, I guess♡

How should I put it… we’ve just been hanging out together for some reason since middle school. Mido-senpai…… I never know what he’s thinking. That guy, he’s the type that doesn’t have enough words, right?

When I looked it up, apparently it's a store chain that sells various useful appliances! Now that's music to my ears~

Q: Where would you like to go if you have your R&R permit approved? A: If I get permission to go out, I would like to go to the opera. Before entering this school, I often went to the New National Theatre in Tokyo with my mother. Bizet’s “Carmen” is recommended for beginners. Do you understand French? 

Q: What do you think about the ghoul(s) in your house? A: I have come to the conclusion that it is futile to try to change the violent behavior of the captain, Taiga Hoshibami, as well as the vice captain, Romeo Scorpius Lucci. From now on, I will defend them and certainly win the Laurel Crown.

Ed’s been around a long time so he definitely knows when someone’s keeping secrets from him. But he can’t bring himself to be mad when you’re seemingly defying your fate.

He’s going to pry and poke his nose into everything until you tell him what’s going on. And when you do, he’s amazed.

In all his years of life, he’s never seen this happen before. You really are a wonder. Someone ought to study you.

He won’t really change how he treats you though. I mean, he’s a vampire. It’s not like he’s in any position to judge someone’s physical condition.

Oh, Rui nearly collapsed with relief when he found out you were still alive and yourself. He’s going to laugh about it, claiming he’s just happy his “curse buddy” is still around.

But the pure joy welling inside his chest can’t be denied. And it smothers any questions he has about how you’ve managed this miracle. He doesn’t care, as long as you’re okay.

When you do eventually open up and tell him what’s been going on, he’s going to express sympathy for you. He imagines that it mustn't be a very pleasant experience.

If there’s anything he can do to help, please let him know. He’s more than happy to keep you company, bring over some tasty snacks and drinks, or help keep your secret from everyone else. Whatever you need.

Lyca smells the change in you but doesn’t understand what it means. He’s going to be asking a lot of questions straight away.

Don’t get him wrong, he’s glad you’re okay. But he needs to know what’s going on so he knows he can keep trusting you.

When you tell him, he’ll just sort of shrug it off. That’s no big deal. And at least you’re okay. Really, that’s all that matters.

He will be more defensive of you for a while though, especially if your secret becomes public knowledge. If anyone tries to bully you, they’ll have to get through a very angry Lyca first.

A crazy theory about the traitor of Tokyo Debunker

I have a theory about who the traitor ghoul could be.

[This is all translated with the translator, I'm sorry for any possible lexical or spelling mistakes, I hope you enjoy my theory]

[Spoilers for everything up to chapter 7]

Okay, I think that they really told us the truth from the beginning.

No, don't go, listen to me--

I think that, in the preface, before the story itself, where they give you to choose a ghoul to supposedly save, that's where the truth lies. Who is the traitor. And that's why I've been studying each of the statements of the 19 ghouls (except for Ed and Lyca) and GUYS I HAVE FOUND SOMETHING.

Before I tell you who I think the traitor is, I'll give you a little introduction: I've studied each of the ways ghouls throw themselves off the terrace and I've found 5 different base drawings, because they are bases that are repeated within the ghouls when they throw themselves off.

For example, base 1 (that's how I called it) is used by Jiro, Alan, Jin, Luca, Leo and Ritsu. I've been looking for ways to relate them to each other, but I haven't found any. Neither between their statements, nor their names, nor their ways of acting in front of MC. I mean, these guys seem to apologize to MC (each in their own way) except for Leo... That said, Leo's statement seemed hopelessly interesting to me, but I'll talk about it in a few paragraphs later. I thought that maybe the Kanji of their initials in Japanese, or maybe the pronunciation of their names in another language give rise to a secret message of why they chose these characters for this pose, or maybe I'm just thinking too much.

Well, the next position, position 2 (according to me, again) is occupied by Yuri, Rui, Taiga and Towa. Here I think the position fits with the boys and their statements, because none of them seem to really want to let you go. That's why they are trying to reach out their hand towards the MC, although perhaps timidly, because they are really accepting their fate.

Position 3, occupied by Tohma, Haku, Haru and Zenji, in their posture they don't try to get close to you in the least. They know they are going to die and they have accepted it. Again, I don't know how to fit it or link them together, but I know that they haven't been chosen at random. In this game nothing is a coincidence.

Position 4, the last one shared between ghouls, is occupied by Kaito, Sho, Romeo and Subaru. Again I don't know how to link them together. Oh well Subaru's statement made me very intrigued, I'll also discuss it later.

Well, and there is ONE LAST POSITION THAT ONLY HAS ONE CHARACTER

That character is Ren. And I think he is the traitor.

WAIT DON'T GO, LET ME EXPLAIN

Now is when you will say "why do you think Ren is the traitor just because of his falling position?" well, WELL. To start with I don't think there are "coincidences" in this game, that is, if they have made an effort to make only one drawing for Ren, there must be a reason, right?

Well, let's analyze his line now step by step:

~~ "This is exactly the reason I didn't want to do this! I knew this was how it would end! What am I doing here? This is all your fault..."

'This is the reason I didn't want to do this'? What does he mean by 'this'? It could be anything, but what if he's talking about betraying MC? Because Taiga never said who the traitor works for. What if he works for Darkwick...?

We can't trust Darkwick, that's become clear throughout the chapters. Also, the ghouls are aware that they're trapped inside the academy, and that's not counting what he did to Lyca. So I don't rule out the possibility that Darkwick was the one who 'hired' our spy, so to speak. Also, from the beginning it's clear that Ren doesn't fit in at Jabberwock, where he was assigned... What is he doing there? What if the academy put him there by rigging the entrance ceremony? Because we all know that Jabberwock is home to a hundred anomalies... And if a student in charge of taking care of them deals with them, it won't look weird. That's why Darkwick brought Ren into Jabberwock and somehow bought him to work there. Because, do you remember the mermaid named by Hyde in chapter 7? The one that's not in Morktranken? The one under Haru's custody? Ren is from Jabberwock, he might know something about it... And have gotten hold of it to give to the patient... Although this deduction leads me to another question: why would the academy do this? Or is Ren working for someone inside the academy, like an independent body...? Like that janitor who appears four times throughout the story, that very suspicious one about whom we know nothing.

Guys, I repeat that in this game COINCIDENCES DO NOT EXIST

'I knew this was how it was going to end!' Ren knew there was something wrong from the beginning? Not even Taiga knew, in his statement he asked us what we had done wrong... And now Ren comes and tells us that he had a bad feeling from the beginning... This causes a lot of doubts. Because what is Ren doing telling us that if he lives always locked in his phone? That only means that he knows more than he says.

'What am I doing here? This is all your fault' To begin with, why does he blame us? Not even Leo (u, damnit bitch) talks to us like Ren does. Also, speaking of Leo, his statement tells us that "I will make those assholes pay for this" IN PLURAL which indicates that the traitor works for someone else and does not do it for his own ideals... With Leo's statement I completely rule out that he is the spy, to tell the truth. But I could be wrong.

Returning to the subject of Ren blaming us, I can only wonder what leads him to that. Why does he blame us? What leads us to the hell in which the game begins...? And why is Ren the only one who blames us while the rest of the ghouls either blame themselves or don't name it. I mean, not even Leo does! This just makes me think more and more that Ren isn't hiding anything good... And I also wonder why Subaru is the only one who blames himself directly. I know his personality is like that... But I can only think of Subaru and his misleading statement... Maybe the company wants us to think badly of him? After all, Professor Moby told us that the Hotarubi ghouls are hiding something. And we don't know if we've really discovered what they're hiding or if we've only seen the tip of the iceberg. And Haku seems pretty suspicious to me too, after telling the principal "have I ever hidden something from you?" BUT WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT HAKU RIGHT NOW. I know he's hiding something, but I don't think he's the traitor.

Now let's talk about Ren's position.

He's the only one who, when he jumps off the balcony, really seems like he doesn't want to do it. He's the one who stretches his hand out more emphatically towards MC, as if he were regretting what he's doing, or as if he's doing this because he has no other choice or... I don't know. His very stiff posture towards you just seems suspicious to me.

But that's because I think he's the traitor, right? Maybe I'm thinking too much, right?

Remember guys that this here is JUST A THEORY because there are still many chapters and many tests left to be able to refute what we've seen so far. I'm also a follower of several theories that I will be publishing and outlining in the future.

this is my first time writing angst and a oneshot in a while, enjooooooooooy 💌‼️

The first time you saw Haru, he was standing at the railing of the Titanic, his fiery red hair catching the sunlight like an ember refusing to burn out. His dark eyes, wide open and filled with curiosity, stared out at the horizon, as though he could see beyond the ends of the earth.

You had wandered from the suffocating opulence of the first-class dining room, desperate for air, and there he was—a splash of color and life against the cold steel of the ship. He turned, catching your gaze, and a slow, lopsided smile tugged at his lips.

“You look like you’re about to jump,” he said, his voice warm and soft.

You blinked, startled. “Excuse me?”

“You’re gripping that railing like it’s your lifeline,” he teased. “If you’re planning an escape, I wouldn’t blame you. This ship feels more like a cage than a luxury liner.”

You didn’t know how to respond. Nobody spoke to you like that— not your overbearing fiancé, nor your parents, who treated you like a doll to be polished and displayed. But this boy, with his eyes and untamed grin, saw through you like no one else ever had.

“You’re wrong,” you said, but your voice faltered.

“Am I?” He tilted his head, studying you with a quiet intensity. “What’s your name?”

“Y/N.”

“Y/N,” he repeated, as if tasting the sound. “I’m Haru. Haru Sagara.”

He didn’t offer a handshake, but something in the way he looked at you made you feel like you’d just crossed an invisible line.

Haru and you became inseparable in the days that followed. He took you to places on the ship you never knew existed—the bustling third-class deck where laughter and music flowed freely, the quiet engine room where the hum of the machinery felt like the heartbeat of the Titanic.

“You don’t belong up there,” he said one night, as you both sat on the deck beneath a blanket of stars. “With them.”

“And where do I belong?” you asked, your voice bitter.

“With me,” he said simply.

You laughed, though your chest ached. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Maybe,” he admitted, leaning closer. “But wouldn’t it be nice to stop pretending?”

His words were a knife through your armor. You turned to him, searching his face for any sign of jest, but his eyes were steady and sincere.

“I don’t know how,” You whispered.

“Then let me show you,” he said, his voice barely audible.

It was the first time he kissed you, his lips soft and trembling, as if he feared you might pull away.

You didn’t.

The night the iceberg struck, the world shattered. The ship groaned and cracked as the freezing water rushed in, chaos erupting around. Your fiancé grabbed your arm, shouting for you to get on a lifeboat, but you wrenched free.

“Haru!” You screamed, pushing through the panicked crowd.

When you found him, he was helping a little boy into a lifeboat, his face pale but determined.

His eyes locked onto yours as you ran to him, and for a moment, it felt like the chaos around you both have disappeared.

“Y/N,” he said, his voice breaking. “You need to get on a boat.”

“Not without you!” you cried, grabbing his hand.

He hesitated, his gaze flickering between you and the lifeboats. Then, with a nod, he pulled you close, his arms wrapping around you as if to shield you from the cold.

“We’ll figure it out,” he whispered. “Together.”

Amidst the silence of the sea, the screams around you were deafening.

The ship had tilted sharply by now, its deck slanted at a steep angle. Each step was a battle against gravity, every movement heavy and slow. But you pushed forward, knowing Haru's hand was tightly clutching yours, his eyes scanning the deck for any sign of hope, any chance of survival.

But there was none.

The lifeboats had already gone, drifting into the cold, black ocean, leaving only the desperate behind. A flare shot into the sky, bright and fleeting, lighting up the faces of those around you for just a moment before it disappeared, swallowed by the darkness.

You could hear the officers yelling, demanding the boats return, but there was nothing—no one to help, no way to escape. The shrieks of passengers filled the air, their bodies slipping across the slanted deck, crashing against obstacles with sickening thuds. The priest clutched the railing, leading prayers as others jumped, hoping their life jackets would save them from the icy waters below.

Haru's face was set with determination as he looked at you. "We need to get to the stern," he said urgently, his voice steady despite the chaos around him. "It’s our only chance."

You nodded, your heart hammering, and together you began to climb, pushing against the tilt of the deck. Water poured in from all sides, sweeping over the railings, dragging everything in its path. You fought against it, your muscles screaming as you gripped anything you could—doors, railings, anything to keep from being dragged back into the freezing water.

"I’m falling—!"

"I got you." Haru’s voice was a lifeline, pulling you up when your strength faltered, guiding you with steady hands.

The ship groaned beneath you, the metal creaking and screaming in protest as it began to split apart, its sound like the roar of a dying beast. It was terrifying, the worst sound you’d ever heard, but you kept moving, kept climbing, until you reached the stern, the ship’s rear rising high above the water.

“Quick. Climb over!” Haru urged, helping you over the railing. “Hold on tight. No matter what, don’t let go.”

You did as he said, fingers frozen against the cold metal. Your thoughts were a blur, your body numb from the cold as the stern tilted nearly vertical, towering above the sinking ship. Haru’s voice kept you grounded. He climbed beside you, his face close, his breath visible in the air.

“This is where we first met,” you whispered, your voice trembling. “Right here... on the stern.”

Haru gave you a small, sad smile. “And it’s the best thing that ever happened to me,” he said softly. His lips met yours briefly, a fleeting warmth in the cold night. “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Y/N. I wouldn’t trade this for anything.”

“I love you,” you whispered, the words barely escaping your frozen lips, a lump thick in your throat. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to your forehead. “And I promise… after this night, you’ll be in a warm bed. In my arms. Safe. I won’t let go.”

“Har—”

The ship groaned again, louder this time, the stern lifting even higher. “Hold on tight!” Haru shouted over the deafening roar, pulling you close as the ship tilted further, the ocean threatening to swallow it whole.

You clung to the railing, your body pressed tightly against his, the cold winds biting through your clothes. The stars above, distant and indifferent, looked down as the universe silently watched the destruction unfold below. The ocean, dark and unforgiving, churned, waiting to take everything.

“I’ll never let go,” you whispered, your breath catching in your chest. “No matter what.”

“Together,” Haru promised, his voice steady even as the ship’s descent continued.

The ship groaned, and with a sudden, terrifying force, it plunged into the abyss, pulling you down with it. The cold hit you immediately, a shock to your body as you fought to swim, to reach the surface.

When your head broke through the water, you gasped for air, but all around you was chaos—people struggling, screaming, disappearing beneath the waves. You searched desperately for Haru, your heart racing.

And then you saw him, bobbing in the water, his eyes searching for yours. “Haru!” you cried, swimming towards him.

“Y/N! Are you okay?” he asked, his voice frantic as he kissed your face, over and over, desperate to keep you close.

But the cold was overwhelming. Your limbs felt heavy, your body succumbing to the freezing water. “I can’t... I can’t anymore.”

“No, Y/N! You can do it!” Haru shouted, reaching for your hand. “There! A piece of debris!”

He pulled you toward a floating piece of a door, guiding you through the freezing water. “Climb up!”

But your hands were numb, your vision blurry. As you tried to pull yourself up, the world around you grew dim, and everything became too heavy to fight against. You couldn’t feel the cold anymore—it was just the crushing weight of despair.

With every ounce of strength left in your frozen limbs, you managed to pull yourself onto the door, though your body trembled violently from the cold. Reaching out, you grabbed Haru's hand, trying to help him up, but the door tilted precariously, threatening to vanish beneath the water. That was when he made his choice.

“It’s fine,” Haru said softly, his voice fragile yet resolute. “Stay there. Don’t move.”

Instead, he stayed in the icy water beside you, his body acting as a shield, ensuring no one would try to take your place. His lips turned an unnatural shade of blue, and his face lost all color, becoming almost unrecognizable from the boy you knew.

“Haru,” you whispered, your chattering teeth betraying the rising panic in your voice.

“Don’t let go.”

“I won’t,” he replied, though the tremor in his voice gave him away. “I promise.”

But the sea didn’t care for promises. His hands, once so steady and warm, were now ice against yours as they clung to your shaking fingers.

“You’re going to live,” he murmured, barely loud enough to hear. “You have to. You need to.”

Tears welled in your eyes, but the cold stole them away before they could fall. Still, you refused to loosen your grip on him, clutching his hand as though it could keep him tethered to you, to life. “Since the day we met… all you’ve ever done… is save me.”

“And I’d do it again,” he stammered through shivering breaths, his words faltering as his strength faded. “A thousand times, I’d save you. You’re meant to keep going, Y/N. You’re not supposed to stay here.”

Your lips, cracked and numb, pressed softly against the back of his frozen hand. “I love you.”

His eyes, heavy with exhaustion, found yours. “I love you too.”

The watch on your left wrist said it was already past 2:00 a.m., yet time passed by in an excruciating crawl. It felt cruel, how the seconds dragged on now, each one mocking the brief moments that had truly mattered in your life. A life that, you realized, had stretched for years but had only really existed for three fleeting days.

“Haru?” you whispered after a long silence, turning to him and shaking his hand lightly. “Where do we go after this?”

But his eyes were closed now, his face unnaturally still, his body half-submerged in the freezing water. His skin had turned a pallid blue, his lips white and cracked. No… You shook him harder, panic rising in your chest as his face was as solid as a block of ice. “Haru!” you called out, your voice trembling at the suggestion of his current state. “Wake up! Please… wake up!”

Silence. Nothing but heartbreaking silence. The lack of response made you sob, but you still managed to pull his hand closer to your chest, feeling your heart being torn asunder as you looked at him.

“No, no, no… please, no…” You clutched him desperately, feeling the weight of his cold, unmoving body against the wood. “Haru, please. Please. Open your eyes. P-Please… You said you’d n-never let go.”

It struck you then, the devastating truth: you'd spent your entire life in the shell of existence, going through the motions of days, months, and years. But it was only when Haru had entered your world that you began to truly live. In those three days, you had felt everything—joy, love, terror, heartbreak. A lifetime compressed into a fragment of time. And now that fragment was slipping away, sinking beneath the icy waves.

Along with your quiet tears, the ocean around you had become lull as if a deathly silence fell over the waters. The shrieks and cries were no more, replaced by the soft lapping of the waves and the distant creaking of the lifeboats.

If not for the faint voice carried over the water, you would have passed out. But someone was calling out, a beam of light flashing your way, forcing you to stay awake. You turned your head, blinking away tears, and saw a lifeboat finally coming back. After what seemed like eons, the crew shone their lights around, searching for survivors, hoping to save anyone at all.

“Over here!” you screamed, waving your hand frantically as your voice wasn’t loud enough for anyone to hear. “Please, help us!”

The beam of light turned toward you, and you heard the oars slicing through the water as the lifeboat approached. Relief may have flooded through you, but then you looked back at Haru, his face still and peaceful, like he was sleeping.

“Miss, let him go,” one of the men in the lifeboat carefully said, reaching out to you. “He’s gone… you have to let go.”

“No!” you protested, holding onto Haru’s hand tighter, eyes filling up with tears again. “I can’t. I can’t let him go.”

“Please, miss,” the man urged, his voice softening into a pained tone. “You have to let go… or you’ll go down with him.”

Your chest tightened with agony, every fiber of your being screaming to hold on. To never let go. You promised him. You made a vow to him that you would figure everything out together. But as you looked at Haru's face, so serene in death, you knew he was already gone. He had left long before you could say goodbye.

Tears streamed down your face as you leaned down, pressing a final kiss to his cold, unresponsive lips. “I love you,” you whispered, voice breaking into a sob. “I’ll never forget about you.”

You had spent years waiting for something—anything—to give your life meaning. And Haru had been the answer. Three days of love, laughter, and connection, and now it was over. You were left with decades ahead of you, but you knew you would spend every moment of them feeling hollow, like the best part of you had already lived and died in those few, precious days.

With trembling hands, you released your grip on his hand, watching as his body slowly slipped beneath the icy water, sinking into the heart of the ocean. Your heart shattered as you watched him disappear, Haru, the love of your life slipping away forever.

The men wrapped a blanket around you, their voices barely registered in your mind as they asked if you were okay.

But you weren’t. You would never be the same again. You stared out into the endless, dark sea, where Haru had disappeared, knowing a piece of you had gone with him, lost forever in the cold, unforgiving waters of the Atlantic.

How could you return to a life that had stretched for years but had only ever felt real for three days?

Tohma

He can handle and appreciate classical but it's not his favorite. He does like more industrial, rap, and hip hop type songs, the exact type that Jin would call senseless noise. He's doing his little paperwork in his little monocle and he's listening to Tupac.

Kaito

Varied!!! I don't think he gives himself enough credit for the variety of music he listens to and enjoys. Knows and likes popular and viral music, but also if you're like hey this song from 2003? This song from 1987? His song from 1954? He probably knows it. He doesn't love all of them and he pretends to only Like the “acceptable” genres and new things, but I think you could play smth old af and he'd be like oh yeah my gran loved this- and he would know it.

Lucas

Guy who admits to not knowing much music. Only the absolute most popular songs he knows, and even then, it's like the catchiest bit or the chorus like babe is NOT listening to music that often. Might have like An Album that he knows well and enjoys but like it would be very limited. Share things with him! He's open minded enough to learn more.

Alan

Another “I don't listen to much music” guy but I think he knows like dad rock from the 2000’s. I don't think he necessarily loves it, he just recognizes it and if he wants to listen to music for some reason, well, Three Days Grace is there and he knows how to type that into yourtube (maybe. Maybe he has to ask Leo for help. Maybe Leo pulls up something completely different. Probably.)

Leo

A pop music enjoyer. Brat summer Twink. Olivia Rodrigo fan. Also likes dance and club music and has a preference based on country of origin. Does NOT like Vocaloid or Nightcore or probably even trance and house music of the 2000’s. He's like ew that old person music?? What am I, 30??? Very opinionated and a song he loved two months ago, now he's like that's absolute trash lmao why would I like that?? Impossible to keep up with his taste.

Sho

Listens to whatever Leo puts on, he's not a stranger to the club, but I feel like has some secret artists and genres he likes that he won't admit to under pain of torture. Like maybe he likes country or kpop or something and he's like God I can't let Leo know this because I'll never hear the end of it. But he listens to it while he's at his food truck.

Haru

Can you not imagine him enjoying a good Cher song? Some Abba? 70’s-90’s I think is like on lock for him. He's turning up, he's blessing the rains down in Africa. He knows Destiny's Child probably. Sometimes he'll be like oh yeah I know new music, like what was that song? Huh? Toxic by Britney Spears came out in 2003? Guess I don't know new music than haha!!

Towa

Hes like ~~~~!!! ~~! (This shit fucks) Listening to birdsong and the bubbling creek. But he's also not immune to A Thousand Years by Christina Perri. He likes love songs! Mostly sweet love songs, not tragic or lost loved ones (probably no Adele). He will enjoy Haru's music as well, but only for Haru's sake.

Ren

Like lofi beats to chill and study to. Movie and game soundtracks but none of the fun ones. He's NOT listening to Decode from the hit movie Twilight and he NOT enjoying Megalovania from Undertale. He would relent to the To The Moon soundtrack and other indie game osts (if not because he enjoys them then to be superior in his Niche tastes).

Taiga

His music taste goes like this:

If you play something he likes, he allows it.

If you play something he doesn't like, he says turn that shit off.

If you ask him what he likes/wants to hear, he's like ….that one song, it's like duh duh dun…no? Whatever. And he gives up.

Romeo

Let me be real with you. You will not know his favorite bands. He doesn't expect you to know his favorite bands. His favorite bands are like experimental bands from Europe who release a song only on the new moon and it's behind an ARG to get to and hear and there's only 5 physical copies of their VINYL ever made.

He also endures whatever Haru, Rui, and Leo listen to and complains only when absolutely necessary.

Ritsu

i cannot take him seriously. like the little Einstein’s theme?? Jokingggg. 😐. He probably doesn't listen to much music, probably only things he remembers from childhood, and then instrumental things occasionally but claims it's mostly just too much of a distraction. He listens to like audio recordings of law books and court cases.

Subaru

I don't know I just think he secretly likes 80’s ballads and girl bands. He likes more traditional music, instrumentals, opera and musical music, and probably can appreciate even like true classic jazz music. He has a lot of patience and tolerance and goodness in his heart and will listen to just about anything and be able to appreciate it, but if it's his choice, he is probably not listening to noise metal.

Haku 

Okay Varied. Okay six thousand songs on his playlist and that's just one playlist. He just can't stand repeating the same songs over and over so he listens to anything and everything. He doesn't always remember every song that well, because there are so many and he doesn't listen to every single one daily, but there's a good chance if you know a song, he has it somewhere.

Zenji

Like Haku! He does appreciate traditional Japanese music and instruments, but he is an art lover first and foremost and will have something positive to say about anything you let him listen to. He and Haku are probably like sitting around going from YT recommended song one after the other and just being like oh yeah this Swedish dance pop is good, yes the Mongolian throat singing is good too.

Ed

VARIED but he also goes “ah, a song from before you time…I hope you'll appreciate it,” and puts on Megan Thee Stallion and listens like it's Vivaldi. He's like these Gregorian monks chanting are so musical. This bardic interpretation of Hips Don't Lie goes hard as the kids say. Blue by Eiffel 65.

Rui 

Not immune to boy bands and girl bands. He likes upbeat things! He might dress goth and live in the goth house but his soul is glittery pink. He listens to a variety overall, but isn't very into anything like screamo or heavy metal. He gets bored listening to anything too slow and level. He, like Romeo, will listen to Haru's music, but unlike Romeo, he will sing along.

Lyca

Doesn't know much music! Likes whatever Subaru likes, he guesses. Doesn't like some of the songs Rui or Ed plays but those are just random misses on a spinning dartboard because they could be anything. He's figuring it out and will listen to anything you want to play for him!

Yuri 

He does not like classical music as much as he claims to. He's like yeah yeah, Beethoven, that's top tier…obviously… (bored out of his mind). Guy who NEEDS to listen to to like. Russian hardstyle and Slavic dance music but he won't. He deprives himself.

Jiro

Listen to me. I wrote all of these because of Jiro. Closer by Nine Inch Nails. Bauhaus. Type O Negative. I'm SAYING he listens to goth and more gothic rock music and you KNOW if Yuri pulls his headphones out to yell at him, he just hears Tear You Apart by She Wants Revenge and he's like… I don't want to talk to anymore I changed my mind stop listening to freaky goth music. He also can hear like a biwa or other traditional instruments and feel comforted and familiar with them, even if he doesn't know why.

Out of curiosity (to bond with the Chaos Combo) he downloads the game. Lo and Behold, he finds himself playing as an Inspector attempting to cure his curse.

You don't catch his eye in the character selection screen, but he goes with you anyway because you're the first person he sees in the character selection.

When he sees you, sleeping on that sofa while his character is walking towards you, trying to wake you up, something shifts in his heart.

THEN, he goes on to find information about your story and other lore tidbits.

Finds out you play the piano and despairs because why tf are you not real?!

He gets every edition of you. R, SR, SSR, including your best equipment. He only pulls on your banners and spends money only for you.

Every other character in his roster is stuck at level 1 while every card of you is maxed out.

He doesn't go out of his house but whenever there's a convention that the fandom is going to be at, he goes outside.

Buys every single merch of you he finds his eyes on.

If there's an official event for you at a cafe or restaurant in another city, he won't go but he will pay others to go for him and ship him the additions you get from participating in the official event.

He has a fan account of you on twitter, retweets every art and fanfiction of you he finds. His home screen + lock screen + pfp will change every time he finds a new art piece of you.

He's also on the list of wasn't interested in the game.

But Jin started playing it and all he could talk about was his favorite character so he gave the game the chance.

Immediately did not like Jin's favourite character. You didn't catch his eye, instead he went for another character.

When he first saw, suit and all, lifting that heavy-ass weapon, he realized he needed something he didn't have.

OH AND YOUR VOICE!?!?! The way you tease your younger classmen, even though it's an invasion of privacy, he's strangely attracted to you.

You're like a butler, and when he finds out you're not as smart as you look (this is literally just Tohma's character omg) he's going to buy a ring to propose to you.

AND YOU'RE FRIENDS WITH THE CHARACTER HE SELECTED?! Now he just has to wait for your banner to get you.

[He's one of those people who loves a character but they go years without obtaining that character.]

Literally makes edits of you with those same official pictures. He likes the characters that the company keeps in the basement.

HAS taken pictures with every cosplayer who cosplayed you.

Will correct everyone if they say something wrong about your lore. He will not see misinformation about you being spread around, nuh uh.

↪ Lucas Errant

Luca also isn't very much into games. He's focusing on his studies for now but when Kaito shows him a picture of you and his favourite character saying "Us, unfortunately" he downloads the game.

Selects the first character that pops up on the selection screen thinking he can change it later, he doesn't and he's going to lament it forever.

But luckily, he gets you on his first ten pull! You're his main now, every good piece of equipment he has will immediately go to you, though he's so guilty every time he takes a piece out from another character to give you.

When he sees you're a bit unhinged but very protective, he decides that he's going to make the best content for you, very wholesome content. He loves interacting with fanwork of you.

Is the nicest in your fandom. He's replying with those cute animals under every fanart of yours, like every fanart someone presses on, Luca's comment is already there.

Isn't too obsessive over you, you're just a character, he understands boundaries, he isn't too big on merch either.

But, he LOVES your voice actor's covers of about anything. Classical music goodbye, covers of songs by your voice actor is on repeat.

wants to attend your events so badly but he's a bit nervous about meeting so many people who also adore you.

...okay where do I begin.

He got the Frostheimers into the game in the first place.

Spent two whole hours deciding on who to select in the character selection screen. EVERYONE WAS TOO DAMN GOOD LOOKING.

But then he saw you in the prologue, you were stuck with his player character in a closet and you were so understanding of him!!

He fell bad right then and there.

Cue the regret of not selecting you for the selection screen.

every fanart on Twitter knows him, a few of them even blocked him because of his atrociously downbad comments about you.

his tweets about you belong in the hall of shame or fame, whatever you prefer.

Gambling? Gambling.

Maybe his bank called him one or two times telling him he didn't have money to spend.

Eventually had to borrow money from Romeo and even then failed to get you. His luck is bad irl and ingame, cut him some slack.

He loves you though, and spends his life daydreaming about you and his life together in a cottage in the woods, away from money-hungry debt collectors.

you know those people at kpop concert who bake sweets to give to people while they camp outside? Yeah, when there's an official event he goes around doing the same. He gets freebies of you for making cookies.

I'm asking this question because I find it an interesting topic. It relates to the criticism the Tokyo Debunker MC receives.

It's not just TD's MC—it's a common theme in otome and gacha games. Genderless MCs in games like *Obey Me!* and *Twisted Wonderland* face less criticism than female MCs. Even though the genderless MCs get some hate, it’s nowhere near the backlash female MCs receive. For instance, *Twisted Wonderland* had debates about a female MC being unsuitable for an all-boys school, despite the presence of monsters and robots. This debate ended with a female MC in the *Savanaclaw* manga.

Another example is *Tears of Themis*, where the female MC is well-received in my opinion due to her having a character. I am very happy that she isn’t a self insert and people seem to agree.

In contrast, female self-insert MCs like TD's MC and *Love and Deep Space*'s MC get a lot of hate for what seems like trivial reasons. TD's MC is often criticized for being ordinary, while LADS's MC, who is strong and brave, also faces backlash, with some claiming she's rude despite evidence to the contrary.

... so I have two lines of thought about this particular topic, it is something I have thought about for a while because I am working on my own game/games and pay a lot of attention to what people think.

It isn't personality people like it is competence

The love and deepspace MC and Rosa from tears of themis actually have very similar personalities. They are bad at/hate studying. They really love food. They both are sort of dorks and known for being kind. What people like about them isn't any of those things, what they like is that both of them are adult women who you can believe live on their own. They actually have skills related to their jobs, you can believe Rosa is a lawyer and that MC is a hunter, the love interests aren't the only competent people in the narrative. I think this can sort of relate to the target audience for both of these games being working women, but that's for a different post. Right now I really want to focus on that concept of competence: the two other otomes I really love and want to bring up are Amnesia: Memories and Hakuoki. The Amnesia MC makes a lot of really stupid decisions, but as the game title gives away she has amnesia. There is an underlying explanation for why she's a bit dim so I don't see too many complaints about her personality (outside of Toma's route but that is a different story) because you don't exactly expect her to be competent. The same goes for Hakuoki's MC whose name escapes me at the moment, she is the daughter of a doctor so she is never made out to be incompetent in medical matters, but she isn't the best fighter. And she doesn't need to be that's the male love interest's role in this particular story.

The problem with MCs like our dear Luna? I believe you said her default name is, in Tokyo Debunker is that we don't exactly have anything she is stated to be good at beyond boosting Stigmas. The various ikmen games get around this by giving their MCs a job, but we don't have that for Luna so we don't have anything to show some backbone or character so people read her as being a bit of a doormat. Like I have said numerous times before, I don't mind this and think that so long as they keep allowing us to see her thoughts this the writing will be good. A relatively easy fix to this could have been to make her someone who really loves music and constantly talks about it, she was going to a concert at the start of the game so that little bit of character would go a long way for her to be more of a human for people to project themselves onto. Generally speaking, when writing an MC, it is perfectly acceptable to give them certain personality traits and a history. But if you do that you need to make sure the narrative respects that interest and does not use it as an excuse to make the male lead look cooler.

Gender Neutral MCs

*sigh* so you bring up Twisted Wonderland and I uh... have some experience with that fandom! And I have observed the gender wars over Yuu with a weary heart. I genuinely could not care any less about how people identify or the type of o.c.s they make, but some people really really care and if I am honest I find that a bit disturbing. It honestly makes me sad to see fanfic, which used to be a really accepting space, fight over writing... well anything really. m/m blogs screaming about how they don't want fem aligned reading their things, f/f blogs screaming about men, the f/m fic writers feeling the need to defend themselves writing for a female reader- doesn't that exhaust you? Why do you care so much? I do not have the energy to care about people writing fanfic I am not interested in reading, is this because I am anemic or have I managed to be normal about one singular thing?

My personal theory is that the commodification of fanfic and fandom has made people think there is something fundamentally wrong with properties that are marketed towards people who are not them. The reaction to Love and Deepspace not having a male MC option sort of cemented that for me, there is nothing wrong with wanting a game where you can be a man or non-binary and date anime boys. There is also nothing wrong with writing m/m fanfic for a property like lds, or wishing you could play as a man in it. I think there is a genuine market gap in good games for people who aren't fem aligned, but you do not get good games by harassing people or implying they suck for wanting games where you can play as a woman. You get that by financially supporting projects aimed at you! There is a blog I follow on here called @amaregamesdb. They post a bulletin of projects, both vn and if, with an emphasis on making people aware of projects that aren't simply otome (ie male love interests with a female protagonist.) I think the people who run it are also the people who coined the term "amare game" to use for games where the MC isn't necessarily female. They also ran a blog to help people like me learn how to code if/vns so I am very grateful for them, so please do give them your support.

I write for a gender neutral reader because I wanted to write interactive fiction and felt like I needed to practice doing so. I have continued to do because honestly? I really enjoy it. I love seeing how many different people identify with my writing and are moved by it. There are some projects I want to do in the future (original works, not fanfic) that I probably will lock the MC to female for, but I want to continue providing gn fic for people for as long as I write. And original projects too! I have two in particular I am working on behind the scenes. The solution to the problems like "what gender is yuu really," if you will permit me to preach for a second, is to not care. Yana said Yuu was meant to be you, and dear reader I don't actually know who you are! So you can be whoever it is you wish to be in your heart and I will make room for you to sit next to me.
