Today we remember Hall of Fame member Tony Rice, born on this day, June 8, 1951. Rice is considered one of the most influential guitarists in bluegrass music. Born into a musical family, he went on to play with Bluegrass Alliance, JD Crowe & The New South, David Grisman Quintet, Bluegrass Album Band, and several solo projects including The Tony Rice Unit.

Jerry Garcia: A Bluegrass Journey Will Open at the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2024
- “It all started with bluegrass,” Billy Strings says of Garcia’s long, strange trip
Though he’s most associated with a long, strange rock ’n’ roll trip, Jerry Garcia’s bluegrass wanderings will be the focus of an upcoming exhibit at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
“It all started with bluegrass,” Billy Strings says in a trailer for the exhibit.
Jerry Garcia: A Bluegrass Journey kicks off March 29-30, 2024, with concerts highlighting Garcia’s music with Old & in the Way, David Grisman and the Grateful Dead’s acoustic side. Leftover Salmon will serve as house band alongside “special guests” to be announced later.
“Jerry Garcia really provided that repertoire to a whole new generation … many of the Grateful Dead songs have become parts of the bluegrass canon,” Vince Herman said.
Garcia’s Journey will remain open for two years at the Kentucky museum and will include the Dead man’s banjos, an acoustic and pedal steel guitar alongside other artifacts, interactive displays and exclusive interviews occupying 2,000 square feet.
“When I found out Jerry was originally a banjo player, his guitar playing somehow starting making even more sense,” Jacob Groopman says.
But some people, like hall of fame Executive Director Chris Joslin, came for the bluegrass and stayed for the bluegrass.
“As a bluegrass musician, I have long been a fan of Jerry Garcia’s banjo work with … Grisman, Tony Rice, Vassar Clements and others,” he said in a statement. “This exhibit tells the story an American music legend who simply set out to be a solid musician and to make the music that spoke to his heart.”

Freeborn Man
Songwriters: Keith Allison and Mark Lindsay
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time
When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man
My home is on my back
I know every inch of highway
Every foot of back road
Every mile of railroad track
I got a lady in Cincinnati
A woman in San Antone
And I always love the girl next door
But any place is home
I'm a freeborn man
Home is on my back
I know every inch of highway
Every foot of back road
Every mile of railroad track
And I got me a worn out guitar
I carry an old tone sack
And I hocked it about two hundred times
But I always get it back
I'm a freeborn man
Home is on my back
I know every inch of highway
Every foot of back road
Every mile of railroad track
Well, you may not like my appearance
You may not like my song
You may not like the way I talk
But you sure like the way I'm gone
I'm a freeborn man
Home is on my back
I know every inch of highway
Every foot of back road
Every mile of railroad track
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time
When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man
Home is on my back
I know every inch of highway
Every foot of back road
Every mile of railroad track

For anyone who thought Tony Rice was all pointless but technically precise noodling, this cut will be a revelation.
There's the quiet, mannered, tea-time intro. Then, the sound comes in, muscular, vital, 10 dB hotter -- and, with it, light.
It's as though someone has torn a pair of dusty curtains from a sunny window, and the effect never fails to surprise. "Is this who Tony Rice was?" -- then, the suffering when you realize what you missed.
Nothing for it now. Just come refresh yourself with some of the best progressive bluegrass ever recorded -- Tony Rice and "Why You Been Gone So Long".

Song Review: Mighty Poplar - “Tipper” (Live 2022)
Before announcing its self-titled debut, Mighty Poplar was gigging and no doubt blowing minds with its lineup and prowess.
The bluegrass supergroup - Watchhouse’s Andrew Marlin on mandolin; Billy Strings’ fiddler Alex Hargreaves; Punch Brothers Chris Eldridge and Noam Pikelny on guitar and banjo, respectively; and Leftover Salmon bassist Greg Garrison - played Tony Rice’s “Tipper” at the 2022 Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots festival in Vermont.
The resulting video shows a piecemeal band as tight as a full-timer as solos pass around the stage like a moonshine jug. But everyone retains his wits, even as the Punches on stage look jarring in jeans and caps as opposed to the formalwear of their main band.
The instrumental “Tipper” does not appear on the quintet’s forthcoming (March 31) LP, though the case can be made. Perhaps a live followup is planned.
Here’s hoping.
