For all my homemaking/baking/cooking followers let me introduce you to the sweetest lady on YouTube who will help you achieve your traditional cooking skills dreams. Mary from Mary’s nest. If you already know her you know how great she is. She’s a woman in her 60s who teaches people how to cook good, wholesome, traditional foods for cheap. Ex: sourdough and how to can tomatoes, and how to ferment things etc…
I was so nervous to make sourdough. I’d tried and it had failed and everyone told me I needed a scale, and to just watch until it was ready without really telling me what to look for, and it was just so complicated. Not Mary. She talks you through EVERY step, and gives options depending on what your budget and skill level is like. She makes everything so easy. She teaches beginners, but she’s not condescending in any way. It feels like your grandma kindly teaching you in her kitchen. Be prepared though: she talks a lot. But I love it! Just put it on as a podcast in the background and she will teach you so much.
From her I’ve learned to make flavoured extracts, sourdough, bone broth, how to stock a pantry, what traditional foods are, how to stretch a dollar in the kitchen etc. She’s so sweet and knowledgeable and I love to hear her talk about her “sweet husband” and “sweet son”. She even introduced me to the concept of charlotte mason homeschooling in one of her videos which sent me down a rabbit hole for a few months.
So if you’re interested, check her out!

I am so proud of our first ever gingerbread real estate! Cosima helped with making everything and decorated it herself with the sweets. I used a great recipe from a little book I was given of gingerbread ideas I was once given, and made royal icing to use as glue and to pipe over for decoration. I put the house in a little gingerbread wood because it reminded me of the Hansel and Gretel house!
