🌖 At first I named him Breaker as a shorthand for 'daybreak' (his twin being named Dusk) and thought it was stupid (bc Sonic would name his kid something stupid) but the more i thought about it.. the more it worked.. windbreaker…. circuit breaker…a breaker being a heavy sea wave connecting to Sonic's fear of water..breaks/brakes… mm wordplay
very aloof! enjoys life. loves hiking. he loves anything with a good view. prefers to take it a day at a time, if given the choice. has a curiosity and interest in the powers and skills of others
he's incredibly strong w/ powers including electricity + Chaos Control/time-space manipulation (and still wearing limiters)
he is extremely tactical with when and how he uses Chaos Control. Breaker wouldn't use his Chaos Control on new opponents, choosing to rely on speed and fistpower. If he did, he'd make it seem that he was just extremely fast getting places, using the shadows of his opponent and surrounding environment to slip between places
ever since he was a little, Breaker’s always come out on top. he’s always looked up to heroes, naturally- after all both their fathers were. and he’s settled into the role quite nicely, one of Green Hills’ very own, and just as beloved. all the townsfolk know him, all the women fawn over him, a true bonafide role model. But even his twin brother Dusk wonders/isn't sure if thats really what he wants or if its simply a role he’s acclimated to.
Breaker has a bit of an iceberg to his character. Most people see the very top layer, what they see day-to-day of the young aloof Mobian heralded as "Sonic and Shadow's son". there's something else that goes on beneath..
his powers essentially distort him from living the same wavelength as others. Like that moment in Sonic Prime where Sonic is going so fast, time has essentially stopped for everyone else. Tapping into this power has led him to believe he is invincible in ways, but not entirely. he enjoys all the scuffs, he enjoys what life has to throw him, his friends, etc. It keeps him grounded. as a result, he has a curiosity when he finally gets to dance with danger one-on-one like the average Mobian. he appreciates any opportunity to throw himself into dangerous situations because he enjoys the thrill of possibly getting hurt, as the pain allows him to feel 'mortal'.
One of his core principals is that he doesn’t want people hurt. He wants people safe. But sometimes it's unsure if thats the case or if its because he wants other people out of his way so he can set the stage between just him and his opponent.. and thus, minimize the collateral damage/cleanup.
He is rather tactical outside of battle too and does especially well in social settings. he already has the chops for it, being charismatic from the getgo- but he knows how to set people/things/his environment up in ways that would allow him to get that final push for things to successfully go his way without anyone being aware he had pulled any strings at all. he is incredibly observant, and always picking up on the finer details. his penchant for people-watching both comes in clutch as a both hobby he truly enjoys in the present and something that could help him in future instances. the "kill two birds with one stone" type. maybe three, if the winds decide it that way.
Whether Breaker wants to admit it or not, he cares about his image. Although his swagger comes quite effortless, he cares how the townsfolk perceive him, not just for the sake of vanity or narcissism but because he understands that people need an idol- they need guidance. That's what his dad was, and that's what he's for. It's what the stars were here for-- people had to look up to somewhere (or someone) for answers. He understands that he is something like a guiding light, a north star- but if they choose to refuse him, it's no skin off his back bc that’s their choice. He doesn't interfere with the choices people decide to make for themselves.
Breaker is a weird paradox character. where he's direct and very upfront, he is also so incredibly indirect about stuff too. Bro's always contradicting himself which makes it very hard for anyone to really pinpoint just what he's thinking beyond what they might know from the "hero" image he shows off once they truly get to know him.
Being good is a choice for him. But it's a choice he doesn't think about and something he's trained himself to wholeheartedly believe is instinct, as he doesn't believe himself to be a bad guy (and he isn't!) But it's like making a lie real and true.
Breaker, like his brother, has his own brand of isolation. Because of his powers, he lives on a different wavelength to other people. Always looking things through a window. He can look close enough to pretend the glass isn't there, that he's with there with everyone else, but there still exists that separation. So he chases after whatever makes him feel 'alive' and in the moment with everyone else.

There was this guy you worked with at the local record store. He was pretty quiet and always wore headphones no matter what—which was fitting for a record store employee, you thought.
But that meant it was almost impossible to talk to him. So the register and the customer service were left in your care. He mostly handled the logistics like carrying the boxes containing new records and arranging them on the display shelves.
On his chest he wore the same employee nameplate that you did. It said "Hi I'm, Kaji," in black letters. You assumed he was the one who wrote his name with those asemic strokes. But all that mattered was that the nameplate served its purpose and everyone now knows his name is Kaji.
Unfortunately, that's about everything you know of this guy. Too bad he can't write his life's story or his favorite food on something he can plaster somewhere on his body.
Kaji was intriguing though. You found yourself stealing glances at him while you stood behind the counter and he'd be walking back-and-forth between the shelves and the storage room. The only time he'd talk to you was when he absolutely need to, but would you really consider conversations about work as ACTUAL conversations? No, not really.
It was a rather slow and peaceful day for the record store. To be fair, you've never experienced a busy day here. It was one of the many charms of this place. But you were bored out of your mind doing absolutely nothing at the register while Kaji was busy with rearranging the vinyls.
An idea popped into your head and you found yourself making way to the very same shelf he was at. Scanning his work, you realized he was arranging records by genre, so you started doing the same. He didn't protest—or maybe he really had no words for you—but he silently let you help him.
The music streaming through his headphones were loud enough that even as you stood a few inches away from him—you could hear it clearly.
"I love Deftones."
Kaji lifts one side of the headphones. "What?"
"I said I love Deftones."
He kept it lifted off his ear while he thought of something meaningful to say.
"You have good taste in music," you add, hoping that he could springboard from that.
"You like Deftones?"
"If like, you should stay down beneath~"
"Yeah, I love them."
Holy shit. Kaji was short-circuiting like an idiot. Normally, the news that someone listens to the same music as he does is nothing amazing. But finding out the pretty girl at his part-time job did? It had him feeling some type of way.
Safe to say, you caught his attention. Hook line and sinker. He removed the headphones from his ears completely, setting them slowly around his neck—telling you that he was ready to listen whatever else you had to say.
"That's cool," he stammered out.
For a long while, the only sound between the two of you were the sounds of the records being shuffled on the shelf. The tension was more palpable than ever.
"There's this music festival on Friday evening," you said. In all honesty, you wanted to continue the topic of music and that seemed relevant at the moment, but it was too late once you realized the implication of it.
He cranes his head to look at you, wanting to make sure he wasn't reading into it too much. But it was accidental and he did read into it too much. "Rock music?" he asked.
"Yeah."
"Who's playing?"
You decided to double down on it. "Let's go together and see."
The slight shift in his expression was a dead giveaway that your words had an effect on him. "Eh... uh... like as co-workers?"
"Ouch, not even friends? Besides, who goes to events like that as co-workers?"
"So... what? Friends?"
Jeez. You sigh. "If I called it a date, would you mind? And no, not a friendly date."
What date isn't friendly—he thought. Hearing the word d-a-t-e, there was no way he'd misinterpret that. He was hoping your invitation was for something more than friends anyway.
"Sure, it's a date then."

Wc:3213 Masterpost CW: Hospitalization, discussions of temporary character deaths
The hospital was pure chaos. Reporters were at the door, police were at the reporters to stay back, and the Waynes were pacing.
None of them had wanted to be left behind, not with this, so as soon as those who had been playing hero changed, they all headed for the hospital. Bruce had met them in a waiting room that had been cleared out for their use. There were benefits to having a wing named after one’s father.
“Clear,” Babs said as she and Tim finished typing on the tablets that they had brought from WE. “CTV cameras will just loop past this room.”
“There are no bugs. I’ve activated scramblers for parabolic mics or anything, not that they should be able to get to us in here anyways,” Tim said.
“What happened?” Steph asked, looking to Bruce.
Bruce looked to Dick. The rest of the eyes followed.
Dick sighed.
“It’s not my secret to tell.”
“I believe we are past that, Richard,” Damian snapped.
“Why don’t you start with a debrief of tonight,” Bruce coached.
“I was almost in suit when Babs came over the comms, telling us they took Danny. I started to look for suspicious vehicles given the time frame. I wasn’t successful at spotting anything before the…” Dick was really glad that Jason was back with Danny and not here listening to this. “…before the trap went off. I saw one of the buildings go dark.
"Cass joined me. We took out the henchmen at the van and leading into the building. Based on intel, I headed straight for the basement. The place was flooded an inch or two deep. They broke the sprinkler valve, I believe. Danny was tied to a metal chair bolted in the middle of the room. A wire had been tapped into the circuit breaker and was at Danny’s feet. His shoes were off.”
Dick swallowed hard and let his arms drop to his side. That urge to punch something was still there. He flexed his hands and then purposefully relaxed them.
“I was sure he was dead, but when I called out his name he moved. I made sure the circuit breaker was off, disconnected the wire, and went to him. He was…” Dick snorted, shaking his head. “He was making jokes. He was conscious but not fully lucid. Confusion, slurred words, panic. He didn’t want to be taken to the hospital. He thought they would cut him open if ‘they knew’. I was able to convince him to come by saying we’d get Leslie and that we’d protect him.”
Damian scoffed. “Of course we will.”
“Case?” Cass signed, face scrunched up in question.
“And asked Alfred to bring a case, one that Jason put in the Cave that Danny gave him,” Dick confirmed.
“What’s in it?” Tim asked.
Dick just shook his head.
“He’s a Meta, isn’t he?” Duke asked. The question was quiet, but it felt loud in the tense air of the waiting room. He wasn’t staring at the ground rather than any of them. “Something new. Maybe something dangerous or, worse, something useful. It’s why he’s afraid they’ll cut him open.”
Steph cussed and turned to punch the wall only to be stopped by Tim.
“Is he?” Tim asked.
It seemed like there was no getting out of this question. “’Close enough’ was the way it was put when I stumbled in on… the secret.”
“Are his powers electricity based?” Babs asked. “Is that how he survived?”
Dick laughed. The bitter sound made a few of the others flinch or grimace.
“No, opposite, really. He’s weak to it. I think they only got him because they used tasers and it really knocks him out.” I’m so sorry, Danny, Dick thought. “Danny… Danny’s been electrocuted before when he was a kid. It killed him, however briefly. Really… I’m not sure if it didn’t actually kill him again tonight.”
This time Tim didn’t stop Stephanie from punching the wall.
“See, that wasn’t so bad,” Dr. Thompkins said as she peeled off her gloves.
Danny just glared at the IV in his hand that had been carefully tapped down and put under a mesh glove.
“It’s like she doesn’t trust me,” Danny whispered loudly to Jason.
“She’s right not to,” Jason said.
Danny pouted at him.
“Fish,” Jason said with a wet chuckle. He ran his hand through Danny’s hair again, which seemed to soothe him. “You said loudly and repeatedly that you were going to go out the window as soon as she stopped watching you or if she took your blood or if she put the IV in.”
“She did take it,” Danny whined.
“I did,” Leslie said, “and I also promised you no one else would get a hold of your blood and I meant it. I need a baseline for you though. It’s my job now to make sure that you’re well.”
“And no clones,” Danny said.
“And no clones,” Leslie said.
She shot Jason a look who just shrugged helplessly. He didn’t know enough about what went down with that to answer her questions.
Leslie gave up with a sigh. “You really went and found someone who fit right in with the family craziness I see.”
“Nah, Doc, he goes above and beyond.”
“Well… that should make for an interesting file.”
Danny flinched at that, hard enough for Leslie to notice and stop what she was doing.
“Danny, listen to me,” Leslie said. She waited until Danny met her eyes to continue. “No one else will see the file. It’s encrypted by Oracle, Batman’s tech person, and that’s understating them. I need to keep a file so that I can treat you and keep you healthy, that’s all.”
“No experiments,” Danny croaked.
Jason wanted to punch someone again.
“No experiments,” Leslie promised.
Danny gave a little nod, turned away from her, and all but climbed into Jason’s lap.
“Make sure he doesn’t pull that IV out,” Leslie ordered and went back to making her notes.
Not long after Jason had gotten him and Danny settled into the hospital bed, there was a knock at the door. Jason’s hand went immediately to the scalpel that Leslie had generously pretended not to notice Jason palming earlier. It didn’t matter that it was a knock Jason recognized, he wasn’t taking any chances with Danny right then.
Jason only relaxed when Dick had stepped fully through the door alone.
“Hey Danny, how are you doing?”
“Leslie took my blood.”
“Yeah, she does that,” Dick said. He was smiling, words cheerful, but Jason could see the cracks in his brother’s facade. “Alfred is going to be here in just a moment with the case. Can I send him in when he arrives? Or I can bring it myself? Or any of us. We’re all out there.”
Danny turned his head enough to be able to peer at Dick with one eye. “You’re worried.”
“Yeah, little fish, we’re all pretty worried. We care about you,” Dick said gently.
Jason resisted the urge to kiss Danny’s pout away as he shifted his gaze from Dick to Leslie.
“Can they come in?” Danny asked.
Leslie pursed her lips. “Only for a half hour. After that, it’s only Jason and one other allowed at a time and that’s only because I want Jason to try to get some rest too. Whoever else is in here is on a minimum two hour shift so not to wake you up every five minutes.”
“Yes ma’am,” Dick chirped.
“And tell them to keep it calm,” Leslie called after Dick as he slipped back out the door. She sighed and shook her head before focusing back on Danny. “Now, there will be nurses who come in.”
“Noooo,” Danny whined.
“Yes,” Leslie said. “They’ll just be taking your blood pressure, which they’ll know to expect to be low, and changing out your saline and pain medication. I’ll be back in the morning myself to check on your burns. Everyone who steps foot in this room will be approved by Bruce and I. Someone from the family will be with you the whole time, you’ll be safe in every way.”
Danny’s pout deepened before he sighed heavily and seemed to deflate. “Fine.”
“Thank you, Danny. Now please try to rest after the group leaves, both of you.”
“Sure, Doc,” Jason answered and sent her a smile. He’d have to do something to help her clinic out soon, she really went above and beyond for them tonight. He managed to get Danny turned around so that his boyfriend wasn’t buried face first into his pecs before his family invaded.
It seemed like everyone was really trying to listen to Leslie and they all filed in orderly and tucked themselves onto the couch and chairs and each other. Bruce and Alfred stayed standing.
“Hi guys,” Danny said with a wobbly smile.
Some of the family flinched at how ruined Danny’s voice sounded. The flinches weren’t obvious to be noticed by anyone by a Bat, except maybe for Duke’s, but they still happened and Jason noticed. They all looked wrecked, really, in various ways. One would almost think they had been the ones kidnapped and murdered tonight.
It was Jason’s turn to flinch at his own thoughts. Greedily, he soothed himself by pressing a kiss to Danny’s temple.
“Hi Danny,” Duke said back. “How are you?”
“You know, feeling a little extra crispy,” he joked.
The room seemed to lose all the air for a moment before Tim groaned. “God, there are two of them now. No wonder you’re dating Jason, you have the same morbid sense of humor.”
The tension in the room broke and Barbie even laughed. (They all ignored how the laugh was a little too tinged with hysteria to be truly happy.)
Alfred cleared his throat and stepped forward. “The case, Master Jason.”
“Ooh, is that…” Danny asked, zeroing in on the case.
“Yep,” Jason confirmed, popping the ‘p’.
Danny held out his arms, making grabby hands at the case. Alfred raised a brow, looking to Jason for permission, before he moved forward and handed over the case. Jason rested his hand on the lid before Danny could open it.
“So,” Jason started. He cleared his throat awkwardly, “no one freak out, okay? What’s in the case isn’t what it looks like. And… and we’ll explain?”
He wasn’t sure if they would.
He wasn’t sure if they could afford not to.
“We’ll explain,” Danny confirmed.
“Okay, Jay-lad,” Bruce agreed, though Jason could tell he didn’t know what he was agreeing to, other than trusting his son.
Jason took a breath and removed his hand. Danny flipped the lid open. It was innocuous at first, a simple black padded case. Then Danny plucked out one of the glowing, Lazarus green ectoshots and the stances of several Bats shifted.
“That is—” Damian started.
“Nope,” Jason interrupted.
“Jay—” Bruce rumbled.
“I’m sure,” Jason said. He glanced at Cass. “Really.”
“What are you going to do with it?” Tim asked, sounding a little strangled.
“Drink it,” Danny answered.
“Drink it?!”
Danny’s nose wrinkled. “Does everyone in this room have issues with that— what did you call it— Pit water?”
“Pit water or Lazarus water,” Jason said. He calmly ran his fingers through Danny’s hair as he made sure to not have a reaction to the ectoshots. Danny needed to drink them, he couldn’t have any of it spilled from misplaced panic. “And a lot of us, yeah. It’s… been a thing. My situation didn’t help any.”
Tim frowned at the vial, clearly itching to get his hands on it. “If that’s not Lazarus water, what is it?”
“Ectoplasm,” Danny sing songed and then just downed the vial to the wince of the room. A shudder ran through his body before he slumped bonelessly against Jason.
Jason plucked the empty vial from Danny’s limp fingers, pressed a kiss to his temple, and put it back in the case. “From best we can think without getting our hands on Lazarus water, they’re a bit related, but ectoplasm is a pure source where as whatever Lazarus water is, it’s fucked up. Beyond that, I think…”
Jason sighed and buried his face in the top of Danny’s head. He didn’t know how to explain the next part to his family. He didn’t know how to tell them he was still, at least a little, dead. He didn’t want to hurt them like that.
“Ectoplasm isn’t a miracle cure, not like it sounds they use Lazarus water for,” Danny said around a jaw cracking yawn. “Doesn’t work for normal people.”
“Does it work for you because you’re a meta?” Duke asked. The sympathy in his voice was hard to hear.
Danny’s laugh wasn’t any easier to hear. “Nope! I mean, like, sure how you count Superman as a meta I’m a meta, I guess. More a different species.”
Steph made an incredulous noise. “You’re an alien?”
“I wish,” Danny snickered. “I’m dead.”
“That is not funny, Nightingale,” Damian snapped.
Jason peered up at his bristling little brother. Demon brat really was already attached to Danny. “He’s not trying to be funny, Dami. Danny is half dead or, rather, half ghost.”
“Okay, which of your parents fucked a ghost?”
“Miss Stephanie,” Alfred chastised.
“Sorry Alfie,” Stephanie mumbled under Danny’s snickering.
At least having almost died (again) tonight saved Danny from being admonished too.
“Ancient, no, my parents hate ghosts,” Danny said.
“But you’re half ghost,” Babs pointed out, gently.
“Yeah. And there’s a reason that I changed my last name and don’t talk to them anymore, not that they know,” Danny said. He stretched out his arms, arching like a cat. Clearly the ectoshot was starting to have an effect. “No, I’m half dead ‘cause I died and then didn’t.”
“You’ve died before, Danny?” Bruce asked, voice carefully gentle in that way he used only when talking to his kids or those who were basically family through his kids.
“Yeah,” Danny sighed. “It was, um, don’t like talking about it. It’s a ghost thing. But my parents built a portal to the ghost’s realm to try and study them. It didn’t work, not at first. I stepped in it, tripped, hit the on button and bam… ten thousand volts of electricity later and I’m dead.”
Tim and Cass both reached out to stop Steph from moving.
“Thing is, the portal turned on,” Danny continued. “So I also got pure ectoplasm shot right through me. It brought me back, kinda. I’m a halfa; half ghost and half human. Half dead and half alive.”
“You’ve died by electricity before,” Bruce said into the silence of the room.
“Probably died again to it tonight,” Danny said with a casualness that had Jason tightening his arms around Danny. Danny just giggled. “But like I told Dick, I’m immune now.”
“You know,” Barbie said. She narrowed her eyes as Danny shrugged before she glanced to Dick. “And you knew.”
Dick sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Little wing?”
“Go ahead, Dick. I’m pretty sure you’ve connected all the dots now,” Jason said. Maybe it would be easier, no, smoother if Dick explained it. He was better at hiding his anger.
Though by the way Dick had to shift on his feet, maybe not. “I… I think I have. Then you’re…?”
Jason nodded.
“Fuck!” Dick twisted and paced to the door and back again.
“Master Richard!”
“Don’t be so harsh, Alfie,” Jason said. He couldn’t make Dick be the one to tell them; that had been a selfish hope. “Dick just put two and two together that if the ectoshots only help Danny because he’s dead—”
“Part dead,” Danny chimed in brightly.
“—then that means I’m still part dead too.”
“Jay-lad?” Bruce prompted after a tense moment, voice rough.
Jason just smiled sadly. “The Pits healed me. It sorta… filled in the cracks, but it couldn’t fix that whatever brought me back didn’t bring all of me back… or couldn’t bring all of me back. I think that’s part of why the Pits had such a hold on me. Not that it’s an excuse, but just… whatever. Point is, I’m a halfa too, even if I’m still healing enough to be a proper one.”
The family practically curled around each other in grief. Dick tucked Damian against his side. Tim slumped into Steph and Cass. Steph reached out to squeeze Bab’s hand. Bruce took an aborted step towards them. Even Alfred raised a hand to his mouth.
“I’m alright,” Jason assured them.
“You’re still dead!” Dick snapped.
“I’m half alive, that’s more than I was before,” Jason pointed out.
Dick hunched into himself at that, prompting Damian to give Dick an awkward looking hug.
“What all does that mean, being a halfa?” Bruce asked. He held up a hand as he paused and took a measured breath. “I don’t mean that as an interrogation. Right now, what’s important for us to know to make sure you’re both healthy? Or is there anything that we should avoid doing?”
Jason snorted. He appreciated the clarification, the attempt at being gentle, he did, but, “I know you want to know more than that.”
Bruce smiled, though the expression was more mocking himself than anything. “Of course I do. You know me, chum, I don’t do good with only pieces of information, but right now I’m not the important one. I can deal with some… unease so that we can focus on you and Danny.”
“Danny should drink at least another ectoshot in a bit. They help us heal as halfas. Dick knows because there was an incident where I got stabbed. Danny sensed my distress and showed up to give me an ectoshot. I had called Dick already. Which means Danny also knows about everything.”
“Danny sensed your distress?” Tim asked.
“It’s a ghost thing,” Jason said with a shrug, unsure how to really explain it. “It comes from ghosts having cores which are sort of their central organ.”
“You core?” Cass asked, clearly struggling to verbalize right then with how her nose wrinkled.
“I do. Or, I’m getting more of one. Because the Pits put me back together badly I was really messed up.”
“It’s coming in well,” Danny said sleepily. He yawned wildly (a little too widely) and turned to bury his face into Jason’s chest. “Pretty lava core too. It’s good to have close for healing. It’s warm and lovely.”
Jason snorted and kissed the top of Danny’s head. “Go to sleep if you can. You’ll need lots of rest.”
Danny huffed a mumbled protest, but Jason could tell that Danny was fading fast.
“We’ll talk more later, Jay-lad,” Bruce said as he finally let himself come close to help Danny and Jason better settle into the hospital bed to sleep.
“Yeah,” Jason said as he fought his own yawn as the head of the bed lowered. “Have to have Danny show you his ghost form, it’s really something.”
Tim echoed ‘ghost form’ quietly in the background as Alfred murmured something to the group.
“Do you want myself or Dick here for the first shift?” Bruce asked.
“Stay?” Jason asked. His eyes dropped closed as his dad ran a hand through his hair.
“Always.”

Midterm week always had a certain sound about it. There was an inherent hustle to everyone's movement and a subsequent shuffling as everyone sped to their next class. It was rare to see people who weren’t completely flustered, spiraling over the anxieties of maintaining their grades. It was the same for you. When at first you couldn’t care, you were forced to realize the predicament you were in. 
It was time to take your physics midterm—the biggest test to date, and you couldn’t remember a thing. You’d let things spiral out of control. You lost focus, and you let your mind be overrun by thoughts of everything but physics—which is why you ultimately failed. 
Viktor sat next to you as he always did, reassuring you that it would be okay. It didn’t feel okay. Everything was drifting away from you and the worst part was realizing you couldn’t talk to Ekko about it.
The thought of your last conversation played in your mind, and then the fact that you swore you would call. You knew him, he was waiting for you to make the first move. In all of Ekko’s concerns about time and it slipping away—he always waited. 
You walked in a hurry, dialing on the phone as you made your way to his place. All the normal anxieties filled you, but you ignored them. You had to repair what you ruined by being careless. 
After a short walk, you arrived. He hadn’t answered the phone which was unlike him. This didn’t deter you though. You knocked on Ekko’s door, tapping on your foot in anxiety. The sound of your own ragged breaths rang in your ear until your phone dinged in your hand. It was him.

Your brows furrowed as you typed your reply.

He didn’t respond—he didn’t believe you. It was all your own fault, too. 
As immature as it was to do so you stormed away. Almost immediately after rounding the corner you collided with someone else—bumping into their shoulder hard. 
“Shit I’m sorry.” You said it to nobody in particular, but out of obligation for whoever it was. Looking up, your breath caught, startled at the frazzled woman in front of you. 
“No worries, you okay?”
You inhaled sharply, your entire frame rising and stiffening. “Mel, hi.” 
“Oh—hi! We know each other right? Jayce is your tutor?” 
“Yeah,” you nodded. The reply dragged out leaving the space between you empty before you continued suddenly. “Sorry for your loss.” 
Mel gulped; she was seemingly in a good mood before this. You fought against your intuition that said that maybe you shouldn’t mention Kino. On the other hand, though, it seemed disrespectful to just not acknowledge him. Despite all of this she handled your remark with grace, in a way only she could.
 “I appreciate that, thank you.” 
Feeling like that was all that needed to be said, you stepped around her to leave. “Okay, bye-“
“Wait-“ Mel cleared her throat. “When’s the last time you saw Jayce?” 
“I haven’t seen him since,” you paused, thinking better of mentioning the actual reason why you haven’t spoken to him. “Since our last session. That was a few days ago.” 
“It’s just that he’s always talking about you and then all this week…not so much. Is everything okay?”
“Yeah,” it came out faster than you intended, suspiciously so. “We’re good!”
Mel pivoted on her feet and turned the direction she noticed you were heading. “You going this way?”
You didn’t speak, just nodded with a soft smile. 
“Can I walk with you?”
You hardly knew her, in fact only made awkward eye contact in passing. Trying to recall a time you actually exchanged words seemed like a waste—knowing you, there was probably small talk and nothing more. She was being kind though, friendly. 
“Sure.”
The two of you shuffled next to each other, steps out of sync but parallel on the sidewalk. 
Mel spoke first, looking at you out of the corner of her eye. “I worry about him—Jayce.” 
“Really?” 
“Mhm. He takes everything so hard. Like somehow everything that’s bad is his fault and his fault only.”
“Like it’s his responsibility,” you added, “Noticed that myself.” 
That got a chuckle out of her and an agreeing nod. “He cared a lot about Kino…we all grew up together and it was inevitable that they'd be close. Bro before hoes or whatever.” She exhaled a deep breath, looking ahead. “There wasn’t anything anyone could’ve done to prevent what happened to my brother. I tried to tell him—he just wouldn’t listen. Now he’s acting all overprotective. I needed some time away from him.” She raised a hand, money in between her fingers, “Supposed to be getting myself something to eat—he insisted on paying.” 
“That actually sounds exactly like something Jayce would do.” 
You kept walking, not really having a place to go but enjoying the company for once. Mel led the way, though, easily crossing the street and pausing at respective stop signs. 
Mel continued, an apprehension lacing her tone, “Whatever he did, whatever he said, he didn’t mean it.” 
She read you both like a book, the clear discomfort in you now. 
You replied with a slight chuckle, not at all convincing her she was wrong. “No—me and Jayce are good. I’m fine-“
“He’s not.” She stopped walking and looked at you, “Talk to him please.” 
You started walking again, turning after Mel onto a side street. Part of you wanted to say no, stand your ground. The other, though, was concerned. It didn't help that Mel was so convincing either; you could tell she really cared. “Okay, I will. I'll talk to him.” 
“Thank you, really.” 
“It’s no problem.” You looked ahead, Mel stepping up onto a porch. “Oh, we walked you all the way home.” A laugh escaped you, not even realizing how long you’d talked with her. 
Mel smiled softly, turning to knock on the door. After some shuffling a voice called behind the door. 
“Mel, you literally have a key…also you left it unlocked...again.”
The door swung open. “Sorry, old habits.” 
Jayce looked past Mel, observing you on the curb in front of his house. Your throat tightened as you swallowed. He broke the eye contact he was making with you, glancing at his friend. 
He whispered, “What are you doing?”
“I’m going to get food—then I’m going home.” 
“No, you should stay-“ 
“I need to be home.” Mel’s resolve was breaking, everything catching up to her. “Please.” 
Jayce just looked, reluctantly agreeing with Mel. 
She continued, turning to walk down the porch steps. “Besides, you have company now.” With a wave back she walked closer to you and placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder. She didn’t look at Jayce, but spoke to him. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” 
As she walked away you became painfully aware of yourself—how you awkwardly stood in the middle of the walkway. 
“So are you gonna come in, or should I shut this thing?” 
His face, now with a hint of stubble, was less serious than you expected. Jayce seemed remorseful and you felt the same; he wasn’t the only one to blame. 
You chuckled, walking up the stairs. He let you step beside him before jokingly moving to inch the door shut. 
“Maybe shut it when I actually cross the threshold asshole.” 
He laughed, too, looking at you fully now. “Yeah, I’ll make sure to do that next time.” 
“Thank you,” without thinking you curtseyed slightly—pulling an imaginary skirt dramatically. 
He watched you freeze, clearly taken aback by your own action. He stifled a laugh, watching you slowly stand as he closed the door.
“I,” you cleared your throat, “I have no idea why I just did that and I’m so embarrassed right now.” 
“Don’t be,” he led you away from the door, back to you. “It was cute.”

Circuit Breaker Fic Concepts
Hey! Thought I’d hop on and talk a bit about the biology stuff I’ve come up with for this fic—just to explain where I’m coming from. It’s kind of a mix of a few different ideas, and honestly, I figured if I’m gonna nerd out, I might as well do it somewhere that makes it available should anyone else out there be interested 😂
Anatomy
Easiest place to start! Most of the anatomy/physiology stuff I’m using is based on this post right here. So handy!!!
Also, it hasn’t come up in the fic yet, but I’m planning to include the omega ‘internal locking’ from the incredible fic series Let Me Try by coldcreation - definitely give it a read if you haven’t! The locking anatomy idea I think is really good, and definitely makes for some amazing, spicy moments 🫣🧡😂
Designations
So, I’m doing a slightly non-traditional take on designations. They’re part of someone’s behavior, but not the whole picture. People still have their own personalities—being an alpha doesn’t automatically make you super dominant, and being an omega doesn’t mean you’re submissive.
Matt’s a perfect example: he’s an omega, but he’s not exactly the soft-and-submissive type.
One thing that hasn’t shown up yet (and might never make it into the fic, who knows) is the way I imagine coming of age working. Basically, everyone’s born with all the glands, but depending on how you present, some of them go dormant to different degrees.
So if someone presented as an alpha, all the omega specific glands would go dormant, and vice versa. And in this universe, a beta would be someone who has all the alpha/omega specific glands go dormant.
Sometimes though, not all of them go dormant as ‘typical’, so you could end up with someone who’s technically an alpha/beta or omega/beta—basically, they have beta tendencies even if they present one way.
Most of the time, people like that are still just referred to as alpha or omega because it’s not super obvious unless you know what to look for. But I like the idea of this extra nuance.
For example: I imagine Foggy and Karen as alpha/betas. It helps explain why Foggy’s way less aggressive than the other alphas Frank’s met—and why Matt is comfortable around them even though he usually gets defensive around alphas.
Omega/betas are rarer, and not all of them can carry a pregnancy—it’s kind of a toss-up.
And just to clarify, Frank is an Alpha, and Matt is an Omega— no beta tendencies in either of them.
Don’t ask me how this would all work anatomically in terms of coming of age and presenting 😬🫩😂
Glands
So! Glands. First off, I don’t think they’re really visible unless someone’s in rut or heat. Even then, it’s mostly the primary mating gland that swells up, maybe the others too if they’ve been bitten or messed with a lot during that time (poor Frank, lol).
Also, as a lot of them are clusters of glands, I imagine when they swell it would be a bit like when they swell in real life— there are one or two that are close enough to the surface to be visibly swollen.
I based the gland system mostly off of superficial lymph glands, but with a few tweaks. Here’s the breakdown:
Omegas have popliteal glands behind the knees that alphas don’t.
Alphas have extra glands in their wrists and hands:
The carpal gland (underside of the wrist)
The pollicis brevis gland (in the palm, near the base of the thumb)
And then both alphas and omegas have:
The Plantar glands (in the arches of their feet)
The Pterional glands (near the temples)

I also brought in some chakra inspiration here! The idea is that each gland can trigger different sensations depending on the context—kind of like emotional pressure points. The effects aren’t exact or guaranteed; it really depends on the individual and the situation. (Image used)

For instance, getting touched in one of those spots by someone you trust can be grounding or calming. But if the wrong person touches the same spot—especially for someone like Matt—it could cause the opposite reaction. Rage, panic, whatever. I wanted these instincts to be powerful, but not foolproof. They’re not a cheat code for overpowering someone, especially not omegas. These mechanisms can absolutely be exploited, but they don’t leave someone completely helpless.
Behaviour / Instincts
Okay, this is where I get excited because I have a background in animal behavior, and this stuff is my jam 😂 That said—none of it is strictly “realistic” animal behavior. I just stole concepts and made them spicy.
The Nape (aka the Circuit Breaker!)
You know the deal—classic A/B/O trope. In animals, it’s called “scruffing” or more technically, Pinch-Induced Behavioral Inhibition (or clipnosis). It’s mostly seen in kittens—they go all limp when grabbed there because it’s safer to be still when you’re being carried by your mum.
In adults, the response usually fades or gets weaker, but in some cats (and similar animals), you can still trigger a kind of calming or freezing effect this way. It’s not painful—it’s more like their body just hits the pause button for a second.
In adult animals, it’s not always as effective. And in my fic world, I kept that idea but gave it more nuance. So yeah, Matt’s got that “circuit breaker” spot at the nape, but it’s not a guaranteed shutdown. People are still human, they still have free will, it won’t completely override their brain unless the person touching the area is trusted and—on some level— the person being “scruffed” wants it to work.
It can be a powerful tool when used with care and trust—but it’s not a one-size-fits-all trigger, and definitely not a weapon just anyone can use.
Scenting & Pheromones
Last little bit: scenting! This one, the scents are totally made up, but it’s based on real animal behavior.
So there’s this thing called the Flehmen response—also known as “stinky face” 😂—that you see in animals like cats and horses. Basically, they catch a scent, then lift their lip and slacken their jaw to breathe in deeply. That helps send pheromones to a special chemosensory organ called the vomeronasal organ (VNO), which is located up near the roof of the mouth.
Now, humans do have a version of the VNO during early development, but it’s basically vestigial in adults. So in real life, it doesn’t do much, and there’s no strong evidence that humans use it to detect pheromones anymore.
But! In this world, I imagined a version of humans where the VNO kind of works—just not at maximum efficiency when passively used. If they really want to tap into it (like, say, plugging their nose to direct airflow like Frank did), they can get a stronger read on someone’s scent. It’s not common practice, but in heightened moments, it becomes this cool, slightly animalistic sensory trick they can use.
