The Mystique of USB Cables: A Modern Enigma
There are few certainties in life: death, taxes, and the eternal frustration of USB cables. These unassuming little connectors—so essential, yet so infuriating—have an uncanny ability to turn even the most composed individual into a muttering, frustrated mess. You’d think something designed for universal use (it’s in the name, after all) would be straightforward. But no, USB cables are a riddle…

Tech-wise, I like SATA cables more than USB, because you can plug USB in wrong, but SATA cables are house shaped, so as to idiot-proof them from tired/distracted nerds.
"Treating elements of unfamiliar religions like they're cursed" and "treating unfamiliar technology like they're cursed" are both boring, unfunny, and out. I will approach the tools and rituals of unfamiliar religions like I handle unfamiliar technology.
I'm not gonna touch your printer or your shrine unless you're standing over my shoulder telling me what to do. Prayer books have never cursed anyone but you should not underestimate my ability to somehow operare idiot-proof systems completely wrong. I'll accidentally upload my whole soul in the cloud or something. If a thing has an use and a purpose, I can and will somehow fuck up handling it.

Heyy i saw ur post abt potentially crocheting around usb cable chargers, and wanted to let you know that this can be a fire hazard. Because the cable is covered you cant check if the cable is damaged. Usb cable are low voltage so the risk is lower than normal cables, but its still there
That's part of why I mentioned being picky about my USB cables; it's all too easy to break the manufacturer-supplied cheaply made plastic-covered cables that typically have minimal or no strain reliever between the plug heads and the cord. I have had so many USB cords die over the last decade or so because normal daily use caused the cord to start coming apart at the join. Once that happens the crochet would be wasted since it's not like you can transfer it to a new cord.
Also, this is the style of cord I use now:
Tumblr media
A nice long integrated strain reliever plus a woven cord cover that you'd need to physically cut to cause it to split (and is supposedly made of bulletproof fibre so it's not easy to wear through or cut). These suckers last, I still have my initial set of three micro USB cables, in pretty much perfect condition, that have seen years of use (I still have some older devices that need that plug shape) plus a more recently purchased set of USB-C cables. Even the cable that sees the hardest use (used for recharging my tablet while reading in bed, which is what most often killed the manufacturer-supplied cords) still looks in perfect condition.
I think I mostly just want what I was originally looking at, which is crocheted vines/garlands that I can wrap along the top bar of my metal bed frame. The covered cables look pretty, but the yarn would probably pick up dust and stains over time and wouldn't be removable for cleaning, unlike the garland which I could just hand wash, or even toss in the laundry in a small mesh bag.

Types of USB Cables
USB cables come in various types, each designed for specific purposes and devices. Here are some common types of USB cables:
USB-A to USB-B:   This type of cable is commonly used to connect peripherals such as printers, scanners, and external hard drives to a computer. USB-A is the standard rectangular USB connector found on most computers and chargers, while USB-B is a square or rectangular connector often used for peripherals.
USB-A to USB-C:  This cable is becoming increasingly popular due to the rise of USB-C devices. It connects devices with USB-C ports (such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and external hard drives) to devices with USB-A ports (such as computers, chargers, and power banks). USB-C connectors are smaller and reversible, making them more convenient than traditional USB-A connectors.
USB-C to USB-C:   This cable features USB-C connectors on both ends, making it ideal for connecting two devices with USB-C ports. It is commonly used to charge smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices that feature USB-C charging ports. USB-C to USB-C cables can also be used for data transfer between compatible devices at high speeds.
USB-A to Micro-USB:  This cable is commonly used to charge and sync older smartphones, tablets, cameras, and other devices with Micro-USB ports. The USB-A connector plugs into a computer, charger, or power bank, while the Micro-USB connector plugs into the device.
USB-C to Micro-USB:   This cable allows you to connect devices with USB-C ports to devices with Micro-USB ports. It is commonly used to charge and sync newer smartphones, tablets, and other devices with USB-C ports using chargers or cables with Micro-USB connectors.
USB-C to Lightning:    This cable is designed specifically for Apple devices. It connects devices with USB-C ports (such as newer MacBook models) to devices with Lightning ports (such as iPhones, iPads, and AirPods). It is used for charging, data transfer, and syncing between compatible devices.
USB-A to Lightning:    Another Apple-specific cable, this one connects devices with USB-A ports (such as computers, chargers, and power banks) to devices with Lightning ports (such as iPhones, iPads, and AirPods). It is used for charging, data transfer, and syncing.
These are some of the most common types of USB cables available, each serving specific purposes and compatible with different devices and ports. When choosing a USB cable, it's essential to consider the type of devices you need to connect and the specific ports they feature.

No H2 Chip? AirPods Max 2024 Has USB-C Magic!
Tumblr media
AirPods Max 2024 will include USB-C charging but no H2 chip
Leaked material from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that the next iteration of Apple’s premium AirPods Max, which is expected to be released in late 2024, will not be very impressive. The modifications seem to be restricted to the inclusion of USB-C charging and the addition of new hues, leaving aficionados with very little for which to get enthusiastic about the device.
The next iteration of the AirPods Max is not expected to be released by Iphone until the last quarter from 2024, and according to the assessments of Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the forthcoming modifications are anticipated to be quite subdued.
Gurman emphasizes in the most recent issue of his Power On newsletter that the anticipated changes would mostly center on new hues and an enhanced charging mechanism. Iphone will, especially, replace the Lightning connection with a port that supports USB-C.
The modification is being ascribed also Apple’s requirement to comply with the European Union’s regulations and implement a common powering mechanism throughout the company’s whole product Distance, especially the Apple AirPods portfolio.
However, more sophisticated features like as the H2 chip, which is recognized for capabilities such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Volume, are not anticipated to be included into the AirPods Max in the near future.
This is because the H2 chip is a relatively new addition to Apple’s product lineup. When one considers that these functions already exist in Apple’s AirPods Pro, which retail for a price that is substantially lower than the Max, this comes as a huge letdown for anybody who was looking forward to seeing them in Apple’s premium AirPods.
Gurman does, however, offer a sliver of chance for revisions in Apple’s plans between now and the anticipated arrival of the revised AirPods Max. This sliver of possibility is quite small.
It is important to note that the AirPods Max will be over four years old by the time Apple releases the improvements, and in light of the fact that they come with a high price tag in addition to recent competition from Bose and Sony, it will be fascinating to watch how Apple manages to maintain the premium headphones appealing to prospective consumers given their age and the recent rivalry from Bose and Sony.

The Batfamily’s Christmas List Tradition (and how Tim gets lost in it)
The Batfamily has a long-standing Christmas tradition: the List. With so many members in the family, it’s a necessity. Everyone writes down what they want (within reason, of course), and the list serves as the ultimate gift guide. It’s efficient, especially for such a big family, and it ensures no one ends up with seven pairs of socks or the same gadget twice.
Tim takes the list seriously. It’s his chance to ask for the small, thoughtful things he wouldn’t usually splurge on for himself. Things like:
New makeup brushes. His old ones are worn out and falling apart, and it’s not until he’s on a mission that requires cross-dressing that he realizes just how bad they’ve gotten. Having a new, high-quality set would make everything feel a little smoother—and maybe even a little fun.
Cozy hoodies. Between Wayne Enterprises business casual and his Robin gear, Tim rarely gets the chance to wear something soft and comforting. His favorite hoodies are all fraying at the edges, with loose threads on the pockets and fabric that’s stretched too thin. A fresh one would feel like a luxury.
A new game console. Tim is rarely ever not working, but on those rare days off, he realizes he doesn't have much to entertain him that's not work related, that doesn't require him to leave his nest. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with his siblings during low-stakes, playful nights.
Nice coffee cups or tumblers. His caffeine habits are legendary, but the chipped and mismatched mugs he uses don’t exactly scream "Tim Drake." A sleek, stylish tumbler or a high-quality ceramic mug would elevate the most important part of his day.
Random indulgences. Books, stationery, weighted blankets, maybe a nice figuring from his favorite movie, a cool gadget he wouldn’t think to buy himself—little things that spark joy and make him feel cared for, anything he knows his own parents would have never bought for him to help heal his inner child. He's never had the luxury of writing such lists before becoming a Wayne.
Tim doesn’t just take the list seriously for himself; he makes sure to go the extra mile for his family, too. He’s always had a knack for gift-giving, and he loves curating the perfect presents for his siblings. For Dick, it might be a rare vinyl of his favorite band. For Jason, an antique first-edition book he’d mentioned once in passing. For Damian, something handmade and unique, like a custom leather-bound sketchbook or a rare art supply. Tim remembers the little things—the throwaway comments, the subtle preferences—and builds his gifts around them, ensuring every box under the tree feels deeply personal.
But Christmas rolls around… and none of the thought Tim puts into his gifts is reflected in what he receives.
Instead, he gets tech. More tech. External hard drives, cables, chargers—things he already has backups for because, well, he’s Tim. He doesn’t need more, and he didn’t ask for more.
And the worst part? It’s not that they’re bad gifts. It’s that the family assumes they know him so well that they don’t even look at his list.
“Tim’s the tech guy,” they think. “Of course he’d want more tech.”
But he doesn’t.
He’s grateful, of course—Tim is always grateful—but there’s a hollowness that creeps in every year when he unwraps another stack of USB drives and ethernet cables. It’s not about the gifts themselves. It’s about the realization that the people he loves, the people who should know him best, don’t see him the way he wants to be seen.
In a way, it feels painfully familiar. Janet had always made sure his presents as a child reflected her vision for him, not what he actually wanted. New tailored suits instead of the hoodies or tees he longed for. Sleek, professional office stationery to replace his Robin-themed pens and notebooks. Vintage collectibles meant to sit on a shelf, collecting dust, instead of toys he could actually play with. The gifts always came with a message: who he should be, not who he was. And now, even with the bats, the gifts still feel like expectations—like they see him as "the tech guy" rather than Tim, with all his quiet wants and overlooked needs.
So, Tim starts dreading Christmas. Not because he doesn’t love his family or the season, but because it reminds him of how little they seem to notice the little things about him.
And maybe one year, he stops adding personal things to the list altogether. Maybe he starts asking for tech, just to avoid the disappointment.
But deep down, he wishes someone—anyone—would surprise him with a new hoodie, a weighted blanket, or a set of makeup brushes. Something that says, “I see you, Tim. I really see you.”

Does a USB drive get heavier as you store more files on it?
Nope. Paradoxically (and theoretically), the more you save on a flash drive, the lighter it gets.
USB drives use Flash memory, which means the the ones and zeros of the data are stored on transistors.
When you save data, a binary zero is set by charging the float gate of the transistor, and a binary one is set by removing the charge.
To charge it, we add electrons, and the mass of each electron is 0.00000000000000000000000000091 grams.
This means that an empty USB drive (which mostly holds zeros) weighs more than a full USB drive (which has ones and zeros). Add data, reduce the weight.
