If there's one thing I hate, and I think we can all agree on this, it's slow drivers. Folks, I'm just trying to get where I'm going. Why are you wasting my time, sitting in my lane, holding me up? If you don't know where you're going, just pull over and phone someone who does.
Have you been feeling like you have too much optimism and faith in the course of our civilization lately? It's probably because you haven't been driving much. After just five minutes driving in a straight line, you'll turn into a regressive, psychotic crank like the rest of the commuting rabble.
Recently, I was forced to walk places for a little bit. It's not my fault: blame whoever at Plymouth in the 1970s decided that cars need oil. And batteries. And engines without a hole in the block. Round tires. Functioning starters. A windshield that's not covered in "parking violator" shame stickers and impound receipts. Really, it's amazing that any of my several dozen Malaise Era sedans have ever run. Be that as it may, I needed some food from the grocery store, and so I had to walk there on my own.
Now, I've walked a pretty good distance before, usually because one of my cars broke down and I had to go home to get another. This is the first time when I've had to walk away from my house. I found the journey somewhat exciting, as soon as I got over the anxiety of not being surrounded at all times by a two-ton steel-and-rust cage. When I got there, I picked up my two-litre of Pepsi and my four-litre of milk, and turned around to head home. On the way back, I saw something amazing.
An enormous traffic jam had formed in my neighbourhood, thanks to two SUVs making kissy-face at the highway on-ramp. If this had happened while I was in my car, I would have been stuck here with the rest of them, swearing at their idiocy while keeping an eye on my water temp gauge. Instead, I was able to walk past the vast quantity of stranded traffic, and pick up the barely-leaking 12-volt car battery that had been ejected from the shattered mass of one of the cute utes. At road speed, I never would have noticed this. On foot? I was noticing all kinds of sweet garbage stuck in the gutters from various low- and high-speed crashes.
It took a little bit of rearrangement of my load in order to carry all this heavy, awkward junk all the way home, but I got there. That evening, after dinner, my Volare had a working starter battery again, courtesy of the Hyundai Whatever that had given its life attempting a low-speed merge into a Hyundai Somethingelse. That wayward battery was now ready to be devoured by whatever rat-chewed wire kept sparking against the floor whenever my fifty year old shitbox was parked in one spot for too long. I was ready to rejoin the commuting masses.
Did I learn anything from my momentary experience as a member of the human race, instead of the rat one? Yes. I probably should buy some shoes, because boy do my feet hurt.

One fine day, Mayor GilsCarbo was busy at work in his office when his receptionist called. A prominent businessman was here with a proposal, she said, one that he claimed the Mayor wouldn't be able to resist. Finding this more intriguing than the city planner's reports that he was reviewing, he replied, "Send him in, Sheila."

It turned out to be none other than Richard Morris, the founder of EveryTech Technologies, and one of the city's top business tycoons. Instead of building seaports or buying trucks, he had a better idea: to send a team into the unexplored fringes of SimNation, establishing a new settlement and scouting the area for valuable resources.
"Sounds good so far. What kind of people are you going to send?" the Mayor asked. Richard grinned, handing over a thick folder. "I'm glad you asked.."

"We've assembled a group of volunteers, each selected for genetic compatibility and expertise in their respective fields. We hope that they'll not only be able to serve the short term goal of taming the land, but also growing a brand new population of tax-paying individuals."
"Very interesting! So, who are these people?"

"First we have my son, Jake Morris, leading the expedition. He'll be the liaison between the new settlement and SimCity. If provided a job in your office, of course."
"That I can arrange. Who else?"

"Mona Lott will be in charge of entertainment and morale, due to her work as an actress."
"Her name sounds very familiar, what was she in?"
"Minor independent productions of a mature nature, as she claimed on her application. Probably some avant-garde, artsy films, but many of my men on the selection committee vouched for her skill."
"Ah yes, I hear she's been praised for her..flexibility."

"Next we have Solomon Utes, a freelance writer of some renown. He regularly contributes to the SimCity Times, and will be authoring all of the status reports."
"I still remember that scathing article he wrote on Landgraab's nightclub, Malcolm sold the business a month later after that went public. Then he sued Utes, and lost."

"Brigette LeRoux here is an experienced midwife, and purportedly good with animals. Her skills as a Douser should also come in handy."
"From these satellite photos, it looks like there's a decently large lake in the area. Surely you don't need a psychic to find that."

"Next we have Amayata Nairi, the civil engineer of the team. She's quite young, she's proven to be quite competent as well. We're confident she'll be able to set up the infrastructure in the settlement, and help connect it to SimCity."
"I'll do what I can to help on my end, if the area proves to be worth the effort."

"Marf Foobar is a volunteer from my own company. He's quite the convincing salesman, which is why he'll be in charge of public relations and tourism."
"Hmm, I'm sure he'll sell it better than a used Smord."

"And finally we have Emi Uzuki. She immigrated from Takemizu to attend Sim State University, where she became the youngest Sim to hold a biology degree."
"A prodigy, I see! I'm sure she'll make a fine doctor."

"So, what do you think?"
"You have a pretty solid team, albeit an odd combination of people. The region you chose looks quite promising, and your requests are very reasonable for a project of this scale. I approve."
"Thank you, Mr. Mayor."

okay, but
multiethnic aus & aus from different cultures are my FAVORITE.
UT as it is now is only one bundle of myths and one manner of dressage. All that can be transformed! There are similar myths on ither continents and in many, many cultures.
Give me new languages, new clothes;
what if the Underground was under India instead, in East India, where two siblings dodge their villages' Durga puja and discover a gaping hole in the old mandir's ruins?
What if the ruins of the mandir topple in to show them the way, as if Maa Durga Herself decided Monsterkind no longer needed her protections, and opened the way for the sibling's pure hearts? (if you take up this idea i humbly request the boy be named Raam and don't forget the little bell anklets for the little lady ❤️❤️❤️)
Toriel in saree. Bet y'all sacrums that Papyrus ABSOLUTELY would drop us ALL DEAD by carrying Bharatanatyam styles with so much energy!! Undyne would look so FIERCE, not integrating martial arts would be criminal. I would feel compelled to give her Maa Durga iconography. All of Sans' attire are prestitched...yes, even the lungi. Even the lungi is prestitched. Alphys is trying her best but the pallu is always wrinkly and uneven, so the kids help her out with dailywear tricks they've watched their Dida do hundreds of times.
Or Pacific Islander. Dead volcanos leave bubbles deep inside the earth. The beating of the sea above creates white noise.
Or a pit drops out from beneath a hilltop fort in the Welsh dells. The people still speak in the old way and look frightened when you speak of the Romans and Human Tribes both, but they don't know if the Romans ever came. Go back further if you like, way further, to when the petrified trees in the Irish Sea were tall and green!
...Or use a totally different mythic inspiration!
A treasure-hunter seeks the jewels of an ancient king, said to have cleansed the land of evils and made a fortune on the way, which he had hidden to remove the demon of temptation from the good people. Except, his treasurehide was the Underground -- and if he tries to remove even a single "piece," the entry collapses. He'll need all his wits and purity of heart.
Tales of the local Folk Catholics turn out to be... not all that wrong. There IS a Hell-portal out there. And, if they didn't put it there, someone else sure did. Even worse... there's real people down there; ...and the last thing either party remembers is the destruction of Asriel and Chara. Niche Folk tales can come forward and sensationalized tropes can step backwards.
Or, something far removed from myth entirely -- magical peoples condemned in a world that will no longer understand them.
A subterranean geologist visits a friend and notices a landmark on a map that isn't there now. They know that, because they're visiting the region for work soon. There's the decision to rappel in and see what was so noteworthy...but what they both didn't anticipate was wicked magic. The Barrier snaps a perfectly good, new repel line like butter once they're inside its maw. Inside, a humble people are being devastated by earthquakes and their civil engineers need a hand. They can only see a limited perspective of the region. But, now it's political -- an adult problem for an adult specialist.
They're alternate universes.
Let's make them OURS. I feel like that's something Toby would want, comparing Undertale and Deltarune.

The First Mission To Land Men on the Moon Begins as the Apollo 11 is Launched Atop a Saturn V Rocket, Destination: the Moon
Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Florida, and began the first manned mission
“Mankind had been waiting for millennia with much anticipation by all who had looked up at the Moon in wonder and imagined a day when they or other men would walk on its silvery surface. The launch of Apollo 11 was the first step in the realization of that dream. ”
The Apollo 11 spacecraft was launched atop a Saturn V rocket from Cape Kennedy at 13:32:00 UT on July 16, 1969. After 2 hr and 33 min in Earth orbit, the S-IVB engine was reignited for acceleration of the spacecraft to the velocity required for Earth gravity escape. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first steps by humans on another planetary body were taken by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20,1969. Broadcast on live TV to a world-wide audience, Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Apollo 11 effectively ended the Space Race and fulfilled a national goal proposed in 1961 by the late US President John F. Kennedy in a speech before the United States Congress, “before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” The astronauts also returned to Earth the first samples from another planetary body. I know I don't talk about work here much, but being a woman in the civil engineering/construction industry is hard. Not in the ways you'd expect, though.
I haven't been harassed by male colleagues. I haven't been overlooked for positions or promotions simply because I'm female. It's more subtle than that.
Sure, there was the one guy who kept asking me questions about my life and what I did on the weekends and generally making me uncomfortable because I like to keep my personal and professional lives separate - but he did that to everyone, even the other guys. He was just lonely. He was annoying, but it wasn't gonna kill me.
The thing that sticks out the most to me is that this job is physically not designed for people like me.
I've lost count of the number of times I've strained my back reaching over a ute tray to secure tools and samples. The number of times I've strained my back trying to manoeuvre the hammer onto the top of the cone penetrometer rods. I've brought this up to my supervisors multiple times, explained I'm not physically tall enough to conduct DCP testing. They still put me on those jobs anyway. They won't get shorter rods, or anything for me to stand on.
On occasions, I've ordered specialised work shirts that were mandatory for specific projects and the smallest size available, men's XS, still fit me like a tent. They didn't make those shirts in women's sizing. My boss at the time just told me to get the shirts tailored. It was easy for him to say that, because his wife is a seamstress. I shouldn't need to either pay a small fortune or learn sewing and alterations to have a uniform that's comfortable and safe. Baggy sleeves are an entanglement risk, as every safety presentation I've attended in this line of work has so clearly pointed out. This oversight could kill me.
Then there's all the regional jobs. Working in some random farmer's fields, in the heat of summer, an hour from the nearest town, an hour from the nearest public toilets. Of course all the guys can just go piss against a tree, but I don't get that option. Especially if it's an open field where you can see a mile in every direction. My choices are a UTI (or even toxic shock syndrome if I happen to be menstruating that week), or heat stress from just not drinking water. If by chance there were some more substantial bushes for me to wander off into, they would almost certainly be inhabited by venomous snakes. Being an hour out of town, we're also an hour from any kind of medical attention. This oversight could kill me.

Its been awhile since you've done any character analysis on Fallout New Vegas, but would you be willing to go into one for some of the minor characters? I'm actually curios of your opinion on Silus the captured centurion and his motivations.
I’m more than happy to, although this won’t be about Silus so much as it will be about the quest Silus Treatment. It’s one of my favorite quests in the game, since it does a great deal just with dialogue and some creative use with the engine to create an engaging quest that showcases some of the failures of the NCR and the Legion. Given that the central theme is about picking a faction, warts and all, having a quest that puts the two main faction of New Vegas on full display is an absolutely good idea. The game is too old for spoilers, but it’s a long analysis so I’ll put a cut in.
Silus Treatment starts off simple enough, going to Camp McCarran, in the old McCarran International Airport, now the regional command post of Colonel Hsu. McCarran is not in a great spot when you first get there; there are periodic Fiend attacks, tensions in Freeside are causing havoc for NCR civilians, the overstretched NCR supply lines are making it difficult even for their central point of operations, and there’s a strong possibility that they’ve been infiltrated. It’s all Colonel Hsu can do to keep order and function in the base. Perfect protagonist fodder, in other words, for a nice quest hub.
It’s a tough needle to thread in any RPG to build a quest hub where there’s stuff for a character to do. If everyone is incapable of solving even the most basic of problems, it gives a great deal of quests for the player to do but it makes the quest-givers look incompetent, especially if the quest-givers are supposed to be capable figures in their own right. Conversely, if the NPC’s are competent, then the quests would be solved and that would close out on content for the player. There’s plenty of ways to settle this, and the devs do an adequate job here. The war effort means prioritization, and Hsu is dealing with being torn from both angles. He can’t just hunt down the Fiends, because he needs to organize patrols and deal with NCR settlers in the area. He can’t just pacify Freeside because it will engender hostility with House and so he’s delaying the order from his butcher superiors like Moore to go in with fire and sword. He doesn’t have a solution to the Kings but he’s trying to find one, which as far as writing goes is a good solution. Hsu is a decent man but overworked. He’s hoping that he can develop a solution in time before Cassandra Moore decides to pull rank and go on the warpath against all who oppose the NCR, which leaves a convenient spot for the player.
It’s this person that gives us our introduction to the Silus Treatment questline. Hsu has a valuable prize: Silus, a captured Legion centurion! Typically centurions always commit suicide rather than be captured to deny any useful intelligence to the enemy, so to capture a centurion alive should be quite a find. But it’s not going so well. Lt Carrie Boyd, in charge of base security, can’t get Silus to talk. Again, perfect quest writing to get the PC involved in the plot. Normally such a sensitive operation would never be given to an unknown civilian contractor, even for a bureaucratic mess like the NCR. Frontier desperation, hitting a wall via official channels, and the fact that the character is the protagonist in a sprawling open world help it pass ludonarrative muster.
Boyd is a real piece of work, she’s openly sadistic hiding beneath of veneer of civility. She considers the humane treatment of POW’s as an impediment, and so looks for ways around it. Notably, while she wants information from Silus to deliver to her superiors, she’ll settle for just having Silus beaten so bloody that he can’t speak anymore, calling it “entertainment.” This is a person who simply should not be in charge of interrogating a prisoner, she is neither humane nor effective at her job, but here she is by virtue simply of being the chief MP on base.
Not that Silus, the prisoner and the other side of this duo, is better. He openly revels in the barbaric practices of the Legion’s slavery system, even trying to ensure that the slaves can never achieve some level of comfort by tightening the collars and making it difficult for them to feel at ease while eating or drinking. Even if Silus is mostly saying those things simply to get a rise out of Lieutenant Boyd, he knows what the Legion is up to and enjoys it. Silus is arrogant to an extreme degree, he is filled with confidence that he can outlast any interrogation by the feeble NCR without giving up any intelligence, that he could easily escape NCR confinement and that he is so valuable to the Legion that following Caesar’s order would be a waste. Good fodder then, for the protagonist to bring him down to size.
Silus Treatment as a quest is relatively simple. Boyd signs off on the Courier beating the ever-living tar out of Silus and then steps out for a smoke, letting the player do whatever he or she wants to the prisoner. Silus, sneering, dismisses the Courier as just another piece of NCR trash, and it’s up to the player with how to succeed. Violence is always an option, you can beat Silus, and eventually gets something useful, that the base itself will be the target of Legion destruction. Silus admits that his fantasy of escape was always a fantasy, he was dead to Caesar just as surely as he as if he had committed suicide before capture.
Yet if the Courier has points in Speech or Intelligence, he can completely upend Boyd’s methods and actually deliver a worthwhile interrogation. The first technique, with speech, uses an interrogation technique known as Pride-and-ego-down, where the interrogator routinely belittles and demeans the prisoner, usually their technical competence or soldierly qualities, in an attempt to get the prisoner to “redeem” themselves by explaining a piece of useful intelligence that would explain the deficiency as opposed to it just being a terrible personal quality. The Courier mocks Silus as a coward (bravery being a key soldierly virtue) and he defends himself by stating his bravery and that suicide is a poor death for a soldier of his intelligence and caliber, then saying how good a soldier he is for a “self-appointed megalomaniacal dictator.” Silus then spills that Caesar held his unit for three days because of “headaches,” in actuality, it’s Caesar’s brain tumor. The technique works to an exceptionally high degree, not only does Silus divulge that McCarran has been infiltrated as in the violence ending, but also that the Legion is suffering a crisis of command due to Caesar’s illness. The Courier gets a lot of useful intelligence out of Silus and doesn’t compromise the humane treatment of prisoners in the process. If it actually caused some self-reflection in Boyd, that’d be a complete win, but I suppose we can’t have everything.
My favorite option is the intelligence option, because the Courier goes full-on PSYOPS, posing as a Legion assassin sent to kill Silus for his failure to commit suicide on Caesar’s order. Silus denies it at first, but as the Courier continues to sell the performance, Silus begins to express real terror at the thought that the Courier is actually a frumentarius sent to kill Silus before he divulges anything to the NCR. The Courier fully sells the deal using Latin phrases as the language of Caesar’s elites. The Courier can quote Cicero, “legum servi sumus” - we are all slaves to the law, in what is perhaps a perfect example of Caesar’s philosophy of totalitarian obedience. The full quote "Legum servi sumus ut liberi esse possimus” - we are slaves to the law so that we might be free, means little in Caesar’s totalitarian state where all are subject to his whims and contingency plans for Caesar’s incapacity aren’t even considered. Of course, the Roman Republic was hardly a free state, but Caesar really takes the cake with his dictatorship. If Caesar’s dictum holds true: “Corruptio optimi pessima” - the corruption of the greatest is the worst outcome. how much worse is it when Caesar himself is corrupted? But totalitarians rarely raise the possibility that they themselves are corrupt, because the good of the dictator is the good of the state. After all, L'etat c'est moi is the dictum of any dictator, not just a Sun King.
Of course, fitting New Vegas, you can side with Silus, and facilitate his escape. There, you feign beating him to unconsciousness and slip him a silenced pistol, then Silus makes good his escape, killing the guard sent to bring him back to his cell and sneaking out. Of all the endings, this one isn’t as satisfying. Some of it, of course, is that you never interact or see Silus again, so there’s never any reward to the quest except for the knowledge that the base is infiltrated, which in the pro-Legion side of the quest I Put a Spell on You allows you to complete Curtis’s sabotage operation (and a far better Legion quest, in my opinion, with the NCR quest side being even better given the multiple outcomes), but also it’s not referenced again with Caesar. What would Caesar’s reaction be to the Courier springing Silus? He is quite fond of reciting a litany of the Courier’s accomplishments in Act 2 at Fortification Hill.
If I could improve Silus Treatment, I think I would have made it so the violent path wouldn’t have produced enough valuable intel, and the player needs to do some more detective work to actually get to I Put a Spell on You, or even being mislead by Curtis and becoming the unwitting patsy of the Legion. But overall, I think it was an incredible quest and a testament to the writing in the game.

Polymers can protect buildings from large fault ruptures
Surface rupturing during earthquakes is a significant risk to any structure that is built across a fault zone that may be active, in addition to any risk from ground shaking. Surface rupture can affect large areas of land, and it can damage all structures in the vicinity of the fracture. Although current seismic codes restrict the construction in the vicinity of active tectonic faults, finding the exact location of fault outcrop is often difficult.
In many regions around the world, engineering structures such as earth dams, buildings, pipelines, landfills, bridges, roads and railroads have been built in areas very close to active fault segments. Strike-slip fault rupture occurs when the rock masses slip past each other parallel to the strike.
A team of researchers led by Associate Professor Behzad Fatahi and supported by Ph.D. candidate Habib Rasouli in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has recently found a groundbreaking solution to protect buildings sitting on deep foundations subjected to large ground deformations due to strike-slip fault rupture.
