my most toxic trait is that i have like 343546 dumb unfinished interactive fiction/renpy projects, bc i love making little conversation trees and planning out reactivity and things, but then i can't manage doing the art/writing/coding all at once, bc i become Unreasonably Perfectionist on all sides and it takes way too long to finish anything ahah...
so, much like the ancient magisters, i am wistfully pining away with hubris, while looking at the unattainable golden city (the concept of an extremely high effort da fan game that would require at least 10 of me to have enough time and energy to work on it effectively)
#;-;#i do recommend everyone try fiddling around with choicescript/twine/renpy#it is very fun just on its own#woe. conversation flowcharts be upon ye.#ui is just terrible though. i hate it so much. every time i looked up a tutorial it did psychological damage to me#there was one really nice and comfy unity plugin called fungus that was SO chill and had a visual interface#but it got abandoned alas...

I wanna play Raymond dress up I should make myself a Raymond dress up game
#that’s pretty much the extent of my programming skills lmao#but lbr. idk if I have enough room for unity on my pc rn#normalposting#also thr last time I did a project in unity (like 7 years ago) I remember having to absolutely beat the shit out of it to let me do my UI#stuff so maybe it would be harder than I’m anticipating#then again it would be a unity2D project and all my issues were in 3D space so maybe not

Say hello to the new Burn Chips system! This is replacing the old Doom-style powerups with a more Duke-esque pseudo-inventory mechanic, holding one charge of each unique type of powerup. Simply tapping the Burn Chip button will use the currently selected Burn Chip. Holding the button lets you use the scroll wheel to choose what Burn Chip to select.
Speaking of which, here's the current planned Burn Chip list. Some of these were already known and planned, and there's a couple more that make more sense with the new inventory-based system.
Weapon Amplifier: Increases fire rate and damage, and adds a small chance to not consume ammo.
Servo Booster: Increases movement speed and melee damage. (originally named "Stimulant Booster" à la Titanfall, but that made less sense as an electronic component-based powerup like the rest of the Burn Chips)
Smart Sights: Enhances certain weapons with target-seeking capabilities.
Regeneration: Recovers health over a short period of time.
Overshield: Temporary energy shield that protects you from normal damage.
"Invincibility" as a powerup in and of itself is probably getting left on the cutting room floor, sadly. I may still think about implementing invisibility, though that's always a hard one to consider given the impact it has on complicating enemy AI programming.
Edit: Looks like the video is compressed to hell on Tumblr, RIP. I have a YouTube version of it up if you want to see the better version of it.

you CAN change between Male and Female at will in What in Hell is Bad it's just bugged rn lol the options don't show up on the normal version but the erolabs version of the app has it!
there's a very noticeable empty spot on the normal app ver but idk how I changed from Male to Female if the buttons weren't there lol
They added account linking as an option in a recent update so I bet it will be fixed soon tm with apolokeys
#vii plays whb#tbh my biggest problem is that ppl level up one at a time 😭#what in hell is bad plz..#also if one wants 'meta' picks for the first guy. elabs gives a tank (butt mammon) and normal gives a marksman (bath levi)#satan is a marksman. beel is melee. mammon & levi are the same classes as the free ones but diff skills#i do rec trying to have a tank for each color the miss chance w/ type advantage is just so good#my main is the normal app bc i want to play on my big ipad but the UI is wonky lol#(does unity not have big tablet sizes in its thing...a comic app i use had a similar problem lol)

#'what if we made a dress up game' is the equivalent of coming into my house and kissign me on the lisp (platonically) you dONT UNDERSTAND#hi i go feral over game development and i want to make a dress up game but i dont have the time on my own#i have so many ideas#do we have a ui designer in nikkiblr? can we kidnap i mean convince them to join this effort?#do we have any other coders? i know we have artists but just like one other coder would plenty i prommy#esp in unity im so good at unity

I think unity is cool and all but I have been fighting tooth and nail with unity to get my UI working right. The UI system in unity is just so buggy and annoying and confusing a lot of the time.
I've also been trying to fix some bugs and get some stuff working for controller support on the UI and it just wont work 😭
I wish unity had some of the stuff for UI that godot does, because this would be much easier if it did

Teaching an Eyeball to be Petty
Hello! I’m going to be away for most of my normal writing days this weekend, so I’ve edited together a little video about designing and animating my game’s main villain.
youtube
Topics covered include:
Porting enemy C# scripts and behaviors from Unity to Godot 3.5
Applying character animation that responds to physics and UI
Structuring characters for flexibility/reuse in different parts of a game
Using animation to instill a .png file of a circle with visible malice
Anyways, that's all I'm going to allow myself to write tonight. I've got things to do!
Happy Halloween!

just realizing i was hoping other a.rknights procrastinators would have waited til the last minute to do icebreakers, so maybe tryhard weirdos wouldn't be playing the easy mode and, therefore, wouldnt have a.ak at the ready if their matchup partner uses meta units like walter??? bc that offends them somehow?????? so i could knock it out today or at least try it out a bit.
but now that i feel sick i KNOW i wouldn't be able to keep up w any random matchups kjsndkfjn.
...........that being said, if any AK mutuals want to cheese the event as fast as possible with the most meta units possible, hmu.... i have walter and logos and virtuosa at the ready :o) i may not be the best player, and i may not have great focus or reflexes today for obvious reasons, but by god i can throw out some powerhouses aha.... you can see my other units here on krooster if needed~
#if i can't do the even it is what it is. the idea of multiplayer arknights is so counterintuitive to what i go to the game for yknow??#sad that i'll miss out on a costume and UI skin but idk if i'd use either anyway??? it'd just be nice to try it out#without the risk of jackasses throwing the game because i dare to play a good unity. lol. lmao.#like sorry but that's an official character that was added to the game. i'm not cheating by using her. grow up.#046txt

this is about discord isn't it
we need to do something about whatever is making ui designers do all the dumb shit they keep doing lately
#the real ten-page answer tl;dr is 'apple and google drive ui design standards and corporate is stupid and chases trends'#this is one of my biggest dev pet peeves up there with Unity's smoke-and-mirrors approach to API design

🎮 HEY I WANNA MAKE A GAME! 🎮
Yeah I getcha. I was once like you. Pure and naive. Great news. I AM STILL PURE AND NAIVE, GAME DEV IS FUN! But where to start?
To start, here are a couple of entry level softwares you can use! source: I just made a game called In Stars and Time and people are asking me how to start making vidy gaems. Now, without further ado:
SOFTWARES AND ENGINES FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO CODE!!!
Ren'py (and also a link to it if you click here do it): THE visual novel software. Comic artists, look no further ✨Pros: It's free! It's simple! It has great documentation! It has a bunch of plugins and UI stuff and assets for you to buy! It can be used even if you have LITERALLY no programming experience! (You'll just need to read the doc a bunch) You can also port your game to a BUNCH of consoles! ✨Cons: None really <3 Some games to look at: Doki Doki Literature Club, Bad End Theater, Butterfly Soup

Twine: Great for text-based games! GREAT FOR WRITERS WHO DONT WANNA DRAW!!!!!!!!! (but you can draw if you want) ✨Pros: It's free! It's simple! It's versatile! It has great documentation! It can be used even if you have LITERALLY no programming experience! (You'll just need to read the doc a bunch) ✨Cons: You can add pictures, but it's a pain. Some games to look at: The Uncle Who Works For Nintendo, Queers In love At The End of The World, Escape Velocity
Bitsy: Little topdown games! ✨Pros: It's free! It's simple! It's (somewhat) intuitive! It has great documentation! It can be used even if you have LITERALLY no programming experience! You can make everything in it, from text to sprites to code! Those games sure are small! ✨Cons: Those games sure are small. This is to make THE simplest game. Barely any animation for your sprites, can barely fit a line of text in there. But honestly, the restrictions are refreshing! Some games to look at: honestly I haven't played that many bitsy games because i am a fake gamer. The picture above is from Under A Star Called Sun though and that looks so pretty
RPGMaker: To make RPGs! LIKE ME!!!!! NOTE: I recommend getting the latest version if you can, but all have their pros and cons. You can get a better idea by looking at this post. ✨Pros: Literally everything you need to make an RPG. Has a tutorial inside the software itself that will teach you the basics. Pretty simple to understand, even if you have no coding experience! Also I made a post helping you out with RPGMaker right here! ✨Cons: Some stuff can be hard to figure out. Also, the latest version is expensive. Get it on sale! Some games to look at: Yume Nikki, Hylics, In Stars and Time (hehe. I made it)
engine.lol: collage worlds! it is relatively new so I don't know much about it, but it seems fascinating. picture is from Garden! NOTE: There's a bunch of smaller engines to find out there. Just yesterday I found out there's an Idle Game Maker made by the Cookie Clicker creator. Isn't life wonderful?
✨more advice under the cut. this is Long ok✨
ENGINES I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AND THEY SEEM HARD BUT ALSO GIVE IT A TRY I GUESS!!!! :
Unity and Unreal: I don't know anything about those! That looks hard to learn! But indie devs use them! It seems expensive! Follow your dreams though! Don't ask me how!
GameMaker: Wuh I just don't know anything about it either! I just know it's now free if your game is non-commercial (aka, you're not selling it), and Undertale was made on it! It seems good! You probably need some coding experience though!!!
Godot: Man I know even less about this one. Heard good things though!
BUNCHA RANDOM ADVICE!!!!
-Make something small first! Try making simple: a character is in a room, and exits the room. The character can look around, decide to take an item with them, can leave, and maybe the door is locked and you have to find the key. Figuring out how to code something like that, whether it is as a fully text-based game or as an RPGMaker map, should be a good start to figure out how your software of choice works!
-After that, if you have an idea, try first to make the simplest version of that idea. For my timeloop RPG, my simplest version was two rooms: first room you can walk in, second room with the King, where a cutscene automatically plays and the battle starts, you immediately die, and loop back to the first room, with the text from this point on reflecting this change. I think I also added a loop counter. This helped me figure out the most important thing: Can This Game Be Made? After that, the rest is just fun stuff. So if you want to make a dating sim, try and figure out how to add choices, and how to have affection points go up and down depending on your choices! If you want to make a platformer, figure out how to make your character move and jump and how to create a simple level! If you just want to make a kinetic visual novel with no choices, figure out how to add text, and how to add portraits! You'll be surprised at how powerful you'll feel after having figured even those simple things out.
-If you have a programming problem or just get confused, never underestimate the power of asking Google! You most likely won't be the only person asking this question, and you will learn some useful tips! If you are powerful enough, you can even… Ask people??? On forums??? Not me though.
-Yeah I know you probably want to make Your Big Idea RIGHT NOW but please. Make a smaller prototype first. You need to get that experience. Trust me.
-If you are not a womanthing of many skills like me, you might realize you need help. Maybe you need an artist, or a programmer. So! Game jams on itch.io are a great way to get to work and meet other game devs that have different strengths! Or ask around! Maybe your artist friend secretly always wanted to draw for a game. Ask! Collaborate! Have fun!!!
I hope that was useful! If it was. Maybe. You'd like to buy me a coffee. Or maybe you could check out my comics and games. Or just my new critically acclaimed game In Stars and Time. If you want. Ok bye
#reference#gamedev#indie dev#game dev#tutorial#video game#ACTUAL GAME DEVS DO NOT INTERACT!!!1!!!!!#this is for people who are afraid of coding. do not come at me and say 'actually godot is easy if you just--' I JUST WILL NOT.#long post
