Honestly growing up is realizing that normal people don’t have to set timers to remember they’re cooking ramen… which notoriously only takes 3 minutes to cook… and maybe I do have adhd

#Trying to explain to my sister in law that I sometimes accidentally set a microwave time to 1 minute when I mean for it to be 20 seconds #and I go ‘oh it’s fine I will just stop it at 20 seconds’#but then in those 20 seconds /I then forget I’m cooking something/#bc my attention is drawn away #and next thing I know I’ve got a cookie that’s literally on fire in the center #and the way this is such a common thing for me #(not necessary w a cookie lol. But the cookie one has happened enough that I’ve legit set off multiple fire alarms w it)#Or yeah the fact that I p much /have/ to set a timer for pasta bc I will 100% forget I’m making pasta if I don’t #Or the literal HELLSCAPE that is laundry bc there’s so fucking many steps to it and it’s soooooo easy to forget it in the washing machine #I was just proofreading these Fucking tags and I forgot the word ‘forget’ in the one abt pasta #I laid out all my evidence that I’ve secretly squirreled away for 10 years to my sister in law #and she just went O.O yeah I don’t think you’re hallucinating it; this isn’t normal #and it was v validating #I just don’t want to seem like I’m saying it for clout or what the fuck ever but I’ve struggled with this my whole life #but on the other hand it’s no longer as big of a deal now that I’m not in school… school was bad.. very confused about how the castle works in merlin because you have arthur bellowing for merlin from across a whole ass castle and somehow he hears it loud and clear and comes running?

ultima 4 is sublime

it's unbelievable how well the gameplay has aged. it's not just notable for its place in history, it's a piece of art worth experiencing to this day

you MUST use a notebook though, every secret and puzzle in the game is solvable without a guide and surprisingly streamlined, but you MUST TAKE NOTES

they don't have to be detailed or anything, just when someone says "Some dude in this town can do X" or "I heard theres a hidden path behind the shop in town Y" write it down: "X guy in Town," "path behind shop in Y." Once you figure out the format of what you need to master the virtues it's easy to make a little organized list that basically becomes your guide for where to head next, so there's never really blind wandering around.

the whole game is a network of rumors and secrets, but unlike most old rpgs (and honestly many modern ones), every solution is discoverable in game just by talking to npcs. for everything else the game books literally give you maps and directions

also ignore the spellbook and class info theyre great atmosphere and imagination to read but theyre overwhelming if you think they actually describe the game mechanics as they claim (classes are mechanically meaningless and reagents are like 1g each so youll have infinite of them... meaning in practice spells work the same as in any other game) Ultima games are far simpler than their manuals make out, as is the case for most classic passion projects where instruction manuals were more canvases for the creators to share their dreams for the experience they wanted to create rather than technical reference guides

also dont run from battles it'll drain your Valor that's really the only regular annoyance, but battles only take a few seconds anyways once youve gathered your party so it's not that big a deal

also MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO EVERY SKELETON IN THE SPOOKY TOWN there are a bunch of generic ones who dont say anything but there's ONE skeleton who looks exactly like all the others who gives you a critical hint so make sure you dont miss him. i did and that was the one thing that got me stuck after completing nearly the entire game hgfvhsjsy. that was the only easily missable thing like that i encountered in the entire game so it threw me for a loop. but i guess the fact that it's the only easily missable clue in the game is testament to how thorough and thoughtful Ultima 4's design was compared to other rpgs of the time. JUST MAKE SURE TO TALK TO ALL THE SKELETONS

#also still very ahead of its time with its philisophical themes not centered around “good and bad” but rather fostering a healthy psyche #and not just living for yourself but still living well #paired with ultima V exploring the downward spiral of once life-enriching virtues reducing to detached religious procedures enforced by law #it's still hilarious to me that Ultima IV-V so thoroughly achieved world peace that following games had to retcon it to have any conflict #“sorry man enlightenment ended at 6PM we're back to corruption”

#i need to write a prequel to aa4 pls pls pls pls pls #okay get this: so phoenix isnt disbarred yet and he doesnt have trucy. hes still taking and winning cases #one day he gets a call from edgeworth and hes all like ''wright i need your assistance'' and hes like what for and edgeworth goes #''ive been given the most ridiculous case and i think youre the only man in law who can take care of it''#so phoenix bikes his ass to the detention center and boom. child behind bars #and phoenix is like ??? hey kid what are doing here. and this kid is the most surly mfer on the planet like you couldnt get-#-a word out of him if you tried. hes kinda giving phoenix the stink eye too but hes just the littlest guy on earth #and phoenix feels bad for him so he tries to get a rundown of the case (maybe edgeworth gave him an autopsy report or smth beforehand)#but get this. the kid still wont speak. he hasnt even moved a muscle. and after some prodding you find out this little dude-#-doesnt speak english (i dont love aa6 but i think apollos tragic backstory can be interesting so we're going w that but taking it seriousl #anyways so maya is like omg this kid is speaking khurainese but hers is kinda broken bc shes not from the mainland and only knows it-#-from like prayers #so you only get bits and pieces of the kids testimony. plus he still doesnt wanna talk bc ''dhurk told me not to talk to you''#so you start following the new lead but you ask too many questions and apollos like oh shit i said too much and wont talk to you anymore #but now you have two leads: khur'ain and a man named ''dhurk'' plus the fact that this is kid might be new to america since-#-he cant speak english but is smack dab in the middle of california. its all v curious and phoenix wants to get to the bottom of it #for the rest of the case i feel like it would go in the direction of ''we dont know exactly whats up w this dhurk guy or where this kid-#-came from but we do get him acquitted and phoenix is able to save him from the dark path he was heading towards'' thus steering apollo-#-in the direction of law and giving him a wayyyy better reason than aa6 gave him <3 #i kind of like the interlinked nature of ace attorney's storytelling. like everything leads into smth else and everyone is impacted-#-by another person before they even become properly entangled w each other's lives #like how mia faced dahlia years before she met phoenix but dahlia was the one to connect them #or how trucy gave phoenix the diary paper but she's also the one who ropes apollo into the waa. even before they know they're siblings #or how lamoire left apollo and trucy as children and when they reunite as adults they cant recognise each other but they all find each-#-other anyways #i could go on but i think this could be cool yknow esp bc i think the most interesting thing about apollo's aa6 backstory is his life-#-post dhurk. like where did he stay? was he a foster kid? was he put into the system? how did that affect him? what kind of ppl took him in #i just wanna know how that whole thing would have effected him bc like when yiu think about it how did he even get to america?? his dad's #-considered a terrorist. idk man i think its interesting and apollo and dhurks interactions are one of the only good parts of aa6

It's only when he picks up on her tone that he realises he's been off all day. It's not her fault, of course - far from it. Between the seemingly endless workload of the last few days and having to deal with a spate of troublesome inmates, he's hardly had a minute to himself. He hasn't even had a cup of tea since this morning.

No wonder he's a little cranky.

He looks over at her, forcing himself to relax his shoulders and relieve some of the tension gathered there. He is quick then to offer her a weary, apologetic smile. "No, no... you've not done anything. My apologies. It's... ah, it's been a long day."

He drags a hand over his face, then up through his hair, making the strands tuft up in all sorts of directions. He doesn't know it yet, since he doesn't make a habit of keeping mirrors in his office, but he looks more than a little frazzled.

"In fact, I think I'm due a break. Want to take a walk with me?"

okay so I need to preface this by saying wholeheartedly ACAB but with the whole lawful good roleplay not allowing for soul cairn - soul trap enchantment, it could be said that a lawful good dragonborn is taking it upon themselves to send evil people to the equivalent of soul jail for atonement/punishment. still tho, abolish the prison system both Skyrim and IRL thank you for coming to my awful Ted talk 💖

From a role-playing perspective on my character, I honestly think he'd still be disgusted by that simply because he doesn't think it's within his right to dictate that. He isn't really into the Divines, but his mindset says, "if these people will be stuck down, surely the Divines would do so"

But that can be a great way to fold those ideas into a lawful-good character without it sticking out too much, or otherwise being totally... misguided or seem too out of character, I think. I think my character would advocate for soul gems to be eradicated simply because of how many innocent souls are in the Cairn, meaning that there will always be innocents in there (it's weird that many people have a prejudice against necromancy but not soul gems, though, but that's a tangent lol)
