Kind Animals Little Cards – version 0.1 Duckling and dandelions

This is a little cards with little animals. Here they are good and kind little animals. It is such a funny thing! Little card with little animal – it is small program. When you open program – and, there, it is little picture and story. Little picture with little animal and story about little animal! There is minimum of settings. As a text color and background color, select language (Russian, English). For positive! Little program for positive!

Now, it is, only, one little card. It has a name – “Duckling and Dandelion”. So, looking at this little card, you can remember summer! So, what a duckling is drawn there! He has so big fun and interesting for him! And, around him – there are dandelions! Beautiful! Maybe, it is everything somewhere at the countryside. Next, duckling will go to swim!

 So, as idea, these little cards – it is for positive! Such a small programs. Maybe, later, it will be something more. So, it is, so, early version, for now. Picture itself, it was drawn a long time ago. And, a story, it was so long time ago. To have some apply of these things into something - I invent such theme with little cards. So, I am, something like, write articles, stories and make drawings – to apply all of these in my projects. So, this time has come for drawing with name – “Duckling and Dandelions”.

First time, I try GitHub for make release at this place. And, this is version 0.1. So, it is early version. But, more or less, it is a complete version. With terms of idea itself, that whole first little card is done! Duckling and dandelion. Little card has a version 1.0.  And project Kind animals little cards – it has a starting point, it start this road from this point!

It is ok to remember summer! Countryside! Field and dandelions! And, there, someplace, he runs – duckling! Let`s sit and remember a summer! And, watch at first little card. With good and kind animals! So, it is a summer at the picture. And everything was so sunny. And good day or morning. What will do duckling? Eat little grass? Or, just, go by the grass. So, look at the little card, read story and make a dreams. Remember summer and countryside! Summer and duckling. What a good start.

This project has such a fun idea. As, someone can say, it is for a reason - to make things interesting! And no need to make them lost – little pictures and stories about good and kind animals!  Duckling speaks – quack-quack!

Little cards with little animals! It is always funny! When it is a summer at the streets and not summer too! Little animals, ducklings. They are doing their own things. They have their own stories. These little cards give you for a moment – one eye to see what little animals are doing there! Well, you, always, does  not see them, as a casual thing. You are, also, are busy with your own things.

And, so, for little animals there – in a grass, in a little river – it is their own world. There, they have their own things to do, and, this way, they spent their daytime. To run to the little river, to watch the grass. To sleep. So, lots of things for little animals under the little sun, for every day! Or get in a hide from the little rain in the shadows of the bush. Lots-lots of something, little animals are doing! They are funny and kind! Good and kind! And funny, full of joy!

So, simply for read a little, about little animals. At the little evening. To drink a tea. Or day. Morning. While, it is a bright sun behind the window. Or in winter to remember about good and kind animals. In winter – they, all of them, are just, go to a sleep! Until little grass starts to grow again, and it is become warm! Now, you know, what little animals are doing, and you remember about them, all the time!

It will be a summer again! And, again, little animals will appear in a field. They will run here and there, again, and, they will do lots of their things. They will have lots of things to do again. And, again, it will be thousands of stories! And, little animals will jump and have fun. To sleep in a grass.

So, for a long time, I want to do something about my friends – good and kind little animals. To remember about them. So, let`s start with duckling and his favorite place – dandelions in a field. There are lots of them in that place. Quack-quack! And, go to another dandelion. Look at this one. And, go to next one. There are lots of them here! How lots of dandelions are in the field! Quack-quack!

So, I have this ability – and send a hello – to all my friends – good and kind animals! And, I wait for a new countryside season to see all of them! They are, just, in spring will awake from a sleep after the winter. And they start, again, to run and do lots-lots of anything! Ahead, it will be a new summer, in the end!

Which ballet companies and which ballet schools you consider to be currently world best? I see often Paris Opera listed as a number one, but who much this is about because of its reputation and history and what do you think about Mariinsky and Bolshoi, is their level declined / declining? Thank you for really interesting and great blog!

The companies referred to as the best tend to be the oldest and historic ones, think big national companies like The Royal Ballet, Paris Opera, Bolshoi, Mariinsky, La Scala, Dutch National Ballet, Australian National Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater, San Francisco Ballet. Nowadays, I think its very hard to compete with the quality, emotional pull, and technical brilliance that comes out of the Royal Opera.

About Schools:

There are lots of good ones, Academie Princess Grace has to be near the top of the list. It's a finishing school, not a foundational one, but nearly everyone who graduates from there gets a job at a reputable company. They are also one of the few schools that has prioritized keeping its curriculum at the forefront of the dance world with a fantastic contemporary and neoclassical program.

I'm consistently impressed with the level of Royal Ballet graduates who have the skills and stability to rock up to any company and instantly demand attention. Look at Takumi Miyaki at ABT right now.

The level of talent coming out of South Korea in particular is absolutely stunning, schools like SunHwa, the YeWon School, and Korea National Arts University are producing complete, company-ready dancers left and right. Through the competition circuit, these schools are slowly starting to gain more international prestige.

I think BBA/MRAX has been in a state of disarray for a while now. Far less competent graduates, due to a lot of internal messiness in administration and a decrease in the rigor of acceptance with many 'paid' places. The level is just not there, especially if you go back and watch videos of exams from the 90s and 2000s. Now sure, many are still getting accepted into Bolshoi, but with the war....there isn't exactly a lot of choice in hiring. There are occasionally some bright lights, Kokoreva being the most notable recent grad, but they seem to be a rarity and not the norm.

Vaganova under Tsiskaridze has generally continued to produce decent female graduates- if you want to live and work in Russia. I pray Tsiskaridze goes back to coaching or teaching boys because the classwork shown by his class of girls left a lot to be desired. I think there are many better places to train for men, particularly after the retirement of some of the older, more experienced faculty. The casting in Mariinsky is already beginning to reflect this drop-off, performances are dominated by Kimin Kim, Nikita Korneyev, and Even Capitane, Timor Askerov - none of whom are VBA graduates. They've also been hiring graduates from Eifman- something they certainly weren't doing a decade ago. Compare their current videos to some of the talented students coming out of the US, Europe and South America...the level isn't always there. I'd urge a talented male student to consider John Cranko, Tanz Academie Zurich, or the Royal Ballet School. Stateside, Houston Ballet, The Rock School, and San Francisco Ballet have excellent programs.

I had to program a function in VBA for Excel, and it inexplicably didn't work, even though I had already made a similar function which worked. I copied and pasted it, then changed in line by line into the function that didn't work, including the name, and it works now. If someone tries to make me program in VBA again they will be taking a long walk off of a short their own spleen.

Hi, came here from the gender slider post. What's the worst thing you've coded in VBA?

I've written a lot of terrible things in visual basic (3d video games! IRC clients! GRAPHICAL IRC clients! comic book readers!) but as for VBA, the worst thing is when I implemented a sliding average for a diet program I was doing in a spreadsheet, but I implemented a fun feature:

it calculated how much I was losing on average and took my target weight and calculated how long it'd be until I hit that point. So it'd be like "based on your current weight loss trajectory, you'll reach your goal weight in 1 year, 3 months".

but I fucked up. I picked the wrong cell for the target weight. it was a cell next to it. an empty cell. which VBA interpreted as a zero.

So it instead told me how long it would take to lose ALL MY WEIGHT. To get down to 0 pounds (0 kg).

as expected that date was surprisingly far into the future and I was confused for a while. I wrote this bug around 2010 and it's still amusing me 14 years later

In danger of becoming a niche program expert at my work. By virtue of teaching myself some VBA coding, reverse engineering a little program in Power Automate and doing half a day of training in P6 Primavera I now find myself being courted by the company CFO as some sort of useful specimen.

Legitimately she was like "and how did we come to find you?" as if I were a yet undiscovered creature, and not just a bored admin who wants to steamline their workload.

Thank you!! I use Photoshop for my big Ellabs pieces and Procreate for smaller pieces and studies. As for brushes, I get my brushes from other artists! I don't know who needs to hear this, but if there's something you feel like learning but don't "see how it would be useful", go do it.

First, life is more than just "what's useful". If it sparks joy, or challenges you, or what-have-you, it's worth doing. Second, we never know how it might empower us.

I work in bioinformatics, mostly the coding side, and most of my code nowadays is in Python. But I first learned coding with VBA. Freaking MS Word/Excel macros. And know what I did most of my own personal coding in, like a name database app, or a Sword of the Stars map editor that I never finished? Perl. And it's still my preferred language. Good ol' "two people could code the same program and it'd look completely different" Perl. But knowing Perl has helped me grow in my abilities to code, and it's also helped my career. It forces me to think in different paradigms. And in bioinformatics, a lot of legacy code and programs are still written in Perl, because for the longest time it was the language of choice for bioinformatics (in some cases it still is).

So learn. Go out there and try something. You never know what skill tree you might unlock.

seximal functions and new project announcement

after two days of work, I can finally add two numbers and subtract two numbers in seximal in Excel! Constantly needing to convert numbers into base 10 for math and then back to seximal was a real pain in the ass, so finishing both custom functions has been hugely helpful.

And I have now successfully scripted some shit in VBA. I haven't really thought about programming shit in years, and it was nice to take something like this on, bash my head into it for a few days, and come out with workable functions (I mean, I can't generate negative seximal values with my subtraction function, and I can only do math pairwise, but that's not the end of the world).

Oh yeah, I'm making a ttrpg that's entirely in seximal. It's inspired by the GBA-era Fire Emblem games (mostly FE6 and FE7) and while the tactical combat stuff is all in seximal, I'm handling the melodrama aspects that make Fire Emblem really special with a full Belonging Outside Belonging game.

And the game is set in Nowa Polska, my Yiddish fantasy setting that smashes together the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, creatures and forces from Yiddish and Polish folklore, sentient magical constructs built for war in a time of peace, and the descendants of an invading Ottoman army, all kettled together by a very angry forest for a century.

It's tentatively titled Szlachta Emblem.

Are ballet intensives money grabbers? I think that if you’re in a great school already (Vba, Bba, la scala, Paris opera, princess grace or even royal ballet) they are unnecessary. Like students need their rest, and they can still do conditioning and barre exercises on vacation! Of course if you’re going with your friends they can be fun and an opportunity to do variations, and meet new teachers and friends, but at the same time… so expensive. My opinion is that they are not necessary but can be fun, but it saddens me to see students think they are absolutely necessary to get ahead, because I don’t think they are.

I agree with you. If you study in one of the big ones, your job in the summer is to rest. That doesn't mean sit and eat ice cream, most if not all of those students continue to train in the summer, just more lightly (no allegro, less pointe, more focus on basic elements and corrections from the year).

If you are not in such a school, then yes, summer programs are an opportunity to be seen directly by the school, in the exact environment you wish to end up in. I mean that even if you're seen in competition, it might not be where the school is looking for recruits.

Now, this is all very general, going off of VBA, BBA, POB schedules. We have no idea what goes on in the rest of the world locally. For example, in my country, the entrance exams for professional schools are from mid-September to October. So starting 15th of August there are "summer intensives" (we call them preparation classes or preparation programs) from all the big schools, where we all go to not only get in shape after summer break, but to meet the teachers and get an idea of where we want to go if we pass (the exam is a state exam, so these teachers have no say on who passes). So in this context, summer intensives do have a point, even if we're not trying to get into Vaganova. There could very well be similar reasons to go somewhere different to train in the summer in other countries as well.
