Okay a loose Recent Reads roundup:
Birds of Prey: Sirens of Justice: so I was lured (tricked) into reading this as Gail Simone wrote one of the stories, even though it, sigh, contains far too much Harley Quinn due to movie synergy. The Dinah and Helena banter is decent, but otherwise this felt...aggressively fine. The Helena story is very pat in terms of how people tend to write Huntress shorts, though I guess it wasn't 'Helena worries about a student' this time.
The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage: very much in conversation with O'Neil's run, of course, and also clearly reacting to contemporaneous US racial discussions. Shifting Myra to be the Mayor's sister not wife definitely alters her position in the narrative, particularly in terms of her obligations and response to situations. It is incredibly bleak in places, but that simply reflects the run it is based on and is a tribute to.
Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen: This is definitely for the Silver Age fan. Matt Fraction manages to string together solving a complex assassination plot over 12 issues by telling the story in short, 2-4 page sections that wildly jump around the timeline and are framed by 'the many ridiculous things that have happened to Jimmy Olsen'. I have absolutely no handle on the canonicity of some of this, particularly the extended Olsen family, and not knowing probably makes this read more easily. Looking at it as a whole, I'm impressed how well Fraction stitched what was effectively episodic 2 page fills into a complete narrative. The energy of the story is relentless. Best read in small doses.
Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P: god this comic could have been so much better than it was. It’s fine and accomplishes exactly what it was intended to do - tell a story of how Alfred influenced and looked out for each of Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian and Barbara - and sets everyone up to be mildly pissed at Bruce. But just for one example, it would have been HUGELY more powerful if they’d been able to use Dick, with his memories just restored, facing the fact he wasn’t there when Alfred needed him and his last interactions were so impersonal and spent pushing Alfred away.
Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: again, underwhelming. Tom King played shipper and wrote his version of how the Helena Wayne story should work; the Dixon story felt 90s appropriate but the art was dire; Brubaker’s felt like a missing scene to his run; Dini’s honestly wasn’t up to the standard I’d hope for from Dini. The art pieces were great though; a lot of good commissions.
Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: I cannot work out who chose the covers used in the issue, which swing between 'iconic' and 'reminding everyone ASBAR exists was unnecessary, DC'.
Generally: they did manage to round up fairly iconic lineups for most of the stories, with some chopping and changing for a few.
Wolfman got another run at trying to frame the 'Dick quits v Bruce fires him' debate; Dixon and Grayson both submitted literal fills (Dixon's is a scene immediately after Nightwing #19 1996 and before #20; Grayson's is at least just an extra story that fits into #1-12 of her Titans 1999 run on a day all the second stringers didn't come to work). I don't actually have a problem with any of these - they're nice additional material, but mostly more of the same. Seeley & King's suffers from the usual Seeley problem for me where it would be vastly improved by having a different focus; but it does feel straight out of his Grayson run, with everything that implies (down to the St Hadrian's student I wish was not present). All of the Dick stories are basically "we got the team back together" creative line ups.
Jason, in contrast, makes it really obvious that nobody can define a definitive Jason run, and so gets the tiniest story with Winick and Dustin Nguyen. I checked, and Nguyen did draw part of UTRH, but I wouldn't have associated him as a character-defining artist for Jason. The story's cute. Winick sidestepped having to commit to anything about his opinions on post-Flashpoint Jason direction.
Tim got Adam Beechen (which honestly makes me happy, I don't care about anyone else's opinion) and luxuriates in Tim having to play civilian; Tynion gets a Rebirth story that I can't quite work out his timing on (it's supposed to be a prequel, but Dick is already back in costume as Nightwing and talking to Tim, suggesting that several issues of the Rebirth Nightwing take place significantly before 'Tec #934) that is a classic 'Tim tells everyone how he feels about his brothers' story. I realise everyone boring has complained about Tim calling Damian a 'horrible gremlin' but the thing is you see I can only read nicknames like that as full of affection. The back and forth is an important part of their relationship, as shown by Damian snapping 'you're only listening to the insults'.
Steph gets her 71 days as Robin slightly padded out and Amy Wolfram manages to pick up Willingham's tone pretty well; I suspect she liaised with Damion Scott quite a bit on this piece.
Damian has a Super Sons piece from Tomasi, because it's the most lighthearted option available and it sells very well (it's sickly sweet). Which was probably the right call as the other piece is clearly written by Robbie Thompson to accompany his Teen Titans run and for the downward spiral going on there. Which is honestly a bit of a pity for Damian, given everyone else got feature pieces from favourite runs, and he got the 'this slots into your current story' piece.

for Alan Nguyen: Are there any workplace tensions they have to deal with? How do they approach them? -vic
@wildfaewhump
Alan is above workplace tensions. He knows there are some, but he's like a guest star at facility 002, he doesn't particularly care about his coworkers.
He has Tyler Parker and the junior knows his place. Tyler is kind of a natural in some regards, a quick learner in others, and he wouldn't speak up.
The only tensions Alan feels like he has to deal with are Tyler's. He feels a bit protective of his Junior, and won't accept him to be bullied (because also, what would that say about him?).
He approaches it with confidence and power plays. He's a master of psychological warfare and that doesn't only extend to his trainees.
He definitely pulled rank on Carly several times, and also made it a point in front of Supervising Handler Grimm, that "not messing with Alan Nguyen" includes not messing with his Junior handler.
It worked well enough - for a time.

Manga, Comics, Graphic Novels
Safe Area Goražde by Joe Sacco
The Way of the House-Husband, vol. 1 by Kousuke Oono
SAGA vol. 1-6 by Fiona Staples and Brian K Vaughan
Top of the Top:
Born a Crime was probably my favourite non ficition, and most of that probably is due to Trevor Noah's narration skills. It was very entertaining and heartfelt.
Less uplifting but just as gripping in a different way was Empire of Pain. Excellent book that went deep into the why and what and hows of Purdue Pharma. Anger inducing.
Lazarus Heist is great and available as a podcast. The book is more or less the podcast word for word.
Fictionwise: I read Trust at the start of the year and it was a bit soon to declare as favourite of the year, but it's stil made the final cut. Just very imaginative and intriguing. Just my kind of MetaFiction. Clever without being cleverclever.
Demon Copperhead I read right off the back of Empire of Pain so maybe that coloured my experience. I've not read any Dickens so loads of references no doubt flew past me, but the language was acrobatic and zingy. I loved it.
Wrapped up the year on a high with North Woods. That was so unexpected and entertaining. Again with the playful language, memorable characters and a unique approach to tying all the various stories together. One that sticks in the mind and makes the writer in me wonder how I can replicate his style (with my own personal twist of course.)

The Club of Unauthorized Heroes - Year 2
Fandom: Teen Titans
Pairings: BBxRae, BBxTer, RobxStar, CyxBee
Rating: T
Summary: The ambiguously-named Project Club of Murakami High has established themselves as not-so-secret superheroes for hire. But while the team navigates the pressure of being out in the open and worries that their stint of big missions was just a fluke, a new threat set out to dismantle everything they’ve worked for brews right underneath their noses. [High School AU]
───
Chapter 8: December. Alien territory p.1
Preview:
“When does this end?” asked Dick.
“A few clubs go forward and invite everyone to the pep rally,” Vic reminded them. He technically had an extra season’s experience under his belt. “Then the cheerleaders do a routine, and it’s over.”
Just like he said, subsequently Angel Edenfield invited everyone on behalf of the Christian club, and Jade Nguyen-Crock spoke for the yearbook committee, which left Kitty to say the cheerleaders wanted everyone to be there. Then the three moved to their cheerleading positions for the final routine.
Dick said, “Ah yes, the three branches of high school government. Cheerleading team, yearbook committee, and Christian club. Enter the buffoon—sorry, I mean the mascot.”

“Hey guys,” Gar said, “my, uh, my family is visiting for the weekend.”
Nightwing, Donna, Keren, and Wally exchanged a look. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Wally asked, sounding hesitant. “I don’t think civilians - ”
“My family aren’t civilians. They’re all supeheroes in their own right,” Gar interrupted.
Nightwing arched an eyebrow. “Who are they?”
“They’re the Doom Patrol,” Gar said, a small grin spreading across his lips.
Vic made an inquisitive noise. “Never heard of them,” he said.
“You know - Elasti-woman, Robotman, Crazy Jane, Negative Man, Coagula, and Chief?” Gar asked, staring at Vic like he was crazy.
“Wait, I actually know of that team.” Nightwing raked a hand through his hair. “B told me of them during one of his lectures. If I remember correctly, they were never in the spotlight much and kind of peaked in the late nineties. Nobody’s heard much of them in the past few years.”
Gar scowled at him. “Maybe because they’re good at their job? So villains don’t keep attacking them, again and again?”
“Are they that good at their job?” Songbird asked.
Gar’s scowl grew. “...No,” he said. “I mean, they’re good at their jobs but Mr. Nobody keeps showing up and causing shit to hit the fan.”
“Okay, can we go back to them visiting?” Nightwing interjected. “What’s up with that?”
Gar shrugged and said, “Mom got worried about me. She wants to meet you guys. And if mom’s coming, then Robotman, Negative Man, Coagula, and Jane will probably be joining her.”
“...Mom?” Vic asked.
“Yeah? My mom? Elasti-woman?”

7, 12, and 22 please!
7- Favorite one shot character:
I’ll go with go with Colin Wilkes (although technically he did show up again briefly after the Mr. Zsasz arc in Batman: Streets of Gotham). The way he crossed paths with Damian made me go, “Yep, that’s about how I’d imagine Damian making a friend his age.” I liked his powers and from the little we saw of him, it seemed like he had an interesting morality that was influenced by his faith (kind of like Huntress). I’m honestly bummed there wasn’t more done with him. I think he had a lot of potential to be a supporting character for future Damian stories. He’s been erased from continuity by the reboots, but I’m wary of any attempts to reintroduce him since I thought Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen’s original introduction for the character was so strong. He’s one of those characters that got away 💔
12- Favorite sidekick:
Is anyone surprised that I’m saying Robin? Specifically though, I have to go with Damian Wayne. The dynamic he has with Dick, especially during Dickbats era, says so much about what Robin means to both of them and really puts Dick as the first kid sidekick into perspective, both for Dick and the readers. Like Dick says in Batman (2016) #34, “You and me, kiddo. From the beginning…And all the way to the end.” 💚💛❤️
22- Ideal titans lineup not including the fab 5:
This is so hard. I’ll preface this by saying that I am a New Teen Titans purist but I also have a strong fondness for the first 20 issues of Titans 1999. That being said, I’d have the core team be: Cyborg, Starfire, Jericho, Damage, Ravager, and Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) with Omen, Bumblebee, Herald, Red Star, Pantha, and Baby Wildebeest as guest appearances. Vic would be the main leader for the team and Kory would take over if Vic’s incapacitated or he needs to step back for a while because he’s dealing with personal stuff (You know, classic Titans scenarios). I promise I didn’t (just) put Grant on this list for my blorbo agenda. His arc in Titans 1999 where Roy takes him to the desert and he works through his trauma was the companion to Kory’s arc where Tamaran waged war against the Gordanians. That made it so the two of them mirrored each other, at least in my eyes. I think if they were in a book together where Kory was actually well written, there’d be plenty of opportunity to explore the different perspectives they have on the cycle of violence and that would also lend itself to some really interesting conflict within the team. I added Kyle in here even though I don’t know him that well (yet!) because I liked him a lot in The New Titans and he had an interesting friendship with Damage that sadly was never explored again after that book. For the guest appearances, I had to include Lilith so she could show up and cause drama (I say this with love). I’m also a big fan of Red Star and his strange little found family, so I’d love to see them work with the Titans again for an arc or two. I’m so glad you gave me 22, it was a lot of fun 😊
