I think this is not as hot a take as it was back in the late 90s:

I really liked the original ending of Evangelion, the last two episodes.

I think nowadays people get it a little more as more people are coming to understand issues of depression, mental illness, and personal trauma and struggle. I think people understand a little better how much of a genuinely huge struggle it is to even reach the point of “I think I can learn to love myself”, and that it’s okay to be you and to take up space in the world. It’s a struggle difficult enough to earn a place at the climax of a series.

As someone who, myself, was deeply depressed and afraid of other people, who put up walls and just tried to be who  people wanted me to be and kept failing, Shinji WAS me. And I’m one of those people who really likes surreal metaphorical crap, so it was admittedly right up my alley in that way.

Regardless, though, it’s like a video I watched recently was talking about. The whole thing was about the struggle of personal connection, even the big punchy robot fights. So the ending made a lot of sense from my perspective.
