Barbastella Barbastellus
Working through my backlog and needed to take a break. Sometimes it helps to swap drawings when diggin' for inspiration. So! Have a piece based on one particular bat I've been obsessing over. The western barbastelle is just so beautiful, it's face looks like a Venetian mask!

Hi Neil, I wonder if you'd consider sharing this link? The building of the Norwich Western Link road is a huge threat to rare Barbastelle bats and other species. It will threaten the UK's LARGEST known rare bat colony. As many people who can object to the road as possible will at the very least raise awareness and hopefully cause a change :) if it was pandas and rhinos at threat we would all be up in arms, so let's do it for the bats.

Absolutely.

I firmly believe that Bruce is a northern long-eared bat, while Damian is an Egyptian fruit bat (they look angy) mix.
Jason would be a giant golden-crowned flying fox (I would have chosen the mastiff bat, but they look horrifying)
Dickie is a greater short-nosed fruit bat
Alfred is, of course, a western Barbastelle, being functionally immortal and mysterious
Timmy is a the pygmy pipistrelle, cause tiny
I'll probably do the rest later
these are all very cute and interesting!! i don’t know much about bats, or bat types. i just drew them cute like the ones i see in videos lol

I love bats !
Here are some that I've seen back in June and July 2023. We captured them to locate their colony in order to better understand and protect the bats from the region I was working in.
Here you have a colony of greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) in the attic of a church (the grey one in the middle is a young one), a female greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolopus ferrumequinum), and a female western barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus).
It was important to catch females because they are the one meeting in colonies to raise their youngs. The colonies can nest in buildings (church, houses or city halls, ...), in constructions (mines, bridges, ...) or in natural cavities (holes in trees, caves, ...).
/!\ All species of bats are protected in France, do not touch them unless you have the authorizations (which I had when I captured them) /!\

Forests of oak, ash and birch stretching across England are part of a £1 billion vision to boost the country’s biodiversity. A new report from The Woodland Trust calls on the government to begin a vast programme of work in order to boost forests across the country. These include proposals to ensure that an area the size of Wales is planted with native trees, restoration of ancient woodland, and increase funding to Natural England, the country’s nature advisor. [...] The reason that 1600 is seen as the last date for ancient woodland is because after this point the UK’s relationship with its trees began to change. Widespread clearances, changes in tree management and harvesting for timber saw the UK’s forest coverage decline sharply, accelerated by the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. As a result, by 1870, it’s estimated that just 5% of England had any woodland cover. Demand for exotic imported species meant that invasive plants, such as rhododendron, were being planted in ancient woodlands and altering them still further. While the situation today is not quite as bad as it was 100 years ago, with trees now covering around 13% of the UK’s land area, this statistic is somewhat misleading. Ancient woodland accounts for just 2.5%, with plantations of non-native trees making up much of the rest. These plantations have had knock-on effects on local wildlife both above and below the ground. The acidity of conifer plantations harms subterranean organisms, while declines in woodland insects and birds have been linked to forests becoming less complex environments. Changes to forest management also have consequences for the species living there, with a lack of dead wood threatening rare bat species like the western barbastelle. The Woodland Trust hopes that by taking action now, the restoration of the UK’s forests can help boost the country’s biodiversity before it becomes too late. Louise Wilkinson, an ecologist who co-authored the report, says, ‘The UK’s woodland is not supporting the diversity or abundance of species it could and should be. As it stands, most is degrading, and once these unique habitats are gone, so will the species that depend on them.’ ‘We really are the last generation who has the time remaining on this ticking clock to restore these irreplaceable habitats. Planting trees is a vital component in tackling the nature crisis that must remain high on agendas.’

Bats declined as Britain felled trees for colonial shipbuilding
Bat numbers declined as Britain’s trees were felled for shipbuilding in the early colonial period, new research shows. The study, by the University of Exeter and the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT), found Britain’s Western barbastelle bat populations have dropped by 99% over several hundred years. Animals’ DNA can be analysed to discover a “signature” of the past, including periods when…

Genshin Impact Vampire AU
Mondstadt
Diluc - Vampire
- He was born a vampire
- Crepus was a vampire who was killed by hunters
- Resistant to fire
- The Ragnvindr’s closest servants are aware of the family’s vampirism and allow themselves to be fed upon
- Diluc only feeds upon those who allow it and never employs vampiric mind control to do so, although he is very capable of it
- He has vampiric arithmomania
- He cannot enter another person’s home without being invited in
- Hates his vampiric nature
- Dislikes the feeling of blood in his mouth
- Can transform into a great horned owl
Kaeya - Vampire
- Kaeya was born a human, but was turned by Diluc when they were preteens. Diluc didn’t mean to do it, but he lost control. That event is the cause of much of Diluc’s guilt, though Kaeya doesn’t resent him for it
- Crepus helped him through his transformation
- Kaeya employs mind control to compel folk to let him feed off them. They have no memory of what happened afterwards
- He cannot enter other’s homes without being invited in
- He can transform into a snowy owl
Rosaria - Vampire and Vampire Hunter
- Rosaria is a hunter who was turned after surviving an attack
- Hates her own nature as a vampire and still actively hunts other vampires, but now only hunts vampires who kill or turn humans
- She needs to feed, so she attacks random people at night. She only takes what she needs and never does serious harm
- She can walk on holy ground and isn’t repelled by religious symbols
- Extremely vulnerable to sunlight
- Can transform into a natterer’s bat
Albedo - Vampire and Witch
- He just suddenly appeared
- Feeds off Sucrose
- Isn’t affected by sunlight
- Doesn’t cast a shadow
- Can be harmed by a branch of wild rose or hawthorn
- Can’t create more vampires
- Was hunted by Rosaria before she was turned
- Helped Rosaria through her transformation
- As a vampire he can transform into a lesser mouse earred bat
- As a witch, he takes the form of a snow ferret
Sucrose - Witch
- Allows Albedo to feed off her
- Does bone magic
- Takes the forms of a deer, a dog, and a cat
Alice and Klee - Witches
- takes the form of crimson foxes
Lisa - Witch
- Knows the identity of most, if not all vampires and witches in Mondstadt
- Razor is pretty much her pet dog on full moons
- Takes the forms of a brown cat, and a short-eared owl
Mona - Witch
- Takes the form of a black cat
Razor - Werewolf
- Mondstadt city doesn’t have any werewolf hunters, so it’s a pretty safe place for werewolves, provided they aren’t violent and don’t cause any trouble
- There are hunters outside the city so villages can be really dangerous for werewolves
- Razor was bitten when he was a baby, so he was socialised when he was transformed as a puppy
- His parents died trying to protect him from the attacking werewolf
- He was rescued by a group of wolves, his lupical
Diona - Witch
- Curses drinks of customers that are belligerent (nothing dangerous)
- Takes the form of a cat
Eula - Vampire
- The Lawrence clan are vampires that kill their prey
- Eula resents them for that and doesn’t drink from people without their consent
- Mainly feeds off Amber
- Has to be invited in before entering a home
- Can transform into a Mediterranean horseshoe bat
Barbara - Witch
- Takes the form of a white dove
Fischl - Vampire and Witch
- Was turned when she was a child
- Started studying witchcraft in hopes of reversing her vampirism
- Feeds off Mona and Bennett
- Doesn’t show up in photographs
- As a witch, she takes the form of a crow
- As a vampire, she can transform into a western barbastelle
Bonus:
Dainsleif - Vampire
- Was cursed with vampirism
- Employs vampiric mind control
- Can be harmed by a branch of wild rose or hawthorn

Yes we are big fans of bats with their eyes in their ears on this blog, including this Western Barbastelle bat (scientific name Barbastella barbastellus).
Some fun facts about the Western Bartastelle: -they produce two kinds of echolocation pulses when foraging for food--one out of their mouth and the other out of their nose. -They eat almost exclusively tympanite moths, which are moths with ears capable of hearing bat echolocation calls. The echolocation calls of these bats are much quieter than many other insectivorous bat species and it is believed that their quiet, nose-emitted echolocation calls allow them to approach moths undetected

If the vamps turned into bats when sleepy, scared, sick or hungry...
A random drabble HC that popped into my head today, in no particular order! Of course, this involves the suitors turning into bats lying on top of their clothing, I don’t make the rules.
Leonardo Often found lying in the hallway or a corner of the library in the form of a Golden-Crowned Flying Fox. Doesn’t really see this as a problem, as long as it’s in the mansion. Sebas’ extra task of bringing him back to his mess of a room always adds an extra entry into his log, complete with the date, time, and location.
Comte Never allows this to happen, he has an image to uphold. Also, he’s pretty much perfect in every way and always in control. No one knows what kind of bat he turned into, a true mystery.
Dazai The only one that has mastered the art of changing into the Western Barbastelle. Loves his windows to bits, really should never be late for anything and yet... Well, dropping into the dining room and immediately turning back into his human form the first time made it clear he should NOT try it again.
Isaac The one most often found in bat form. Dislikes the fact that he cannot control this ability the way Dazai could. The possibilities would be endless! Escaping the annoying duo, for starters, finding the perfect quiet place, stargazing on the roof, the list goes on. Turns into a Honduran White Bat, super cute!
Mozart Doesn’t allow this to happen often if he can help it, because one time he turned into a Northern Ghost Bat at his piano and his claw left a scratch on the pristine surface.  Also hates being touched, so the others tend to keep their distance. Has turned into a bat once in the carriage, did not make the trip more bearable, however.
Vincent Another that rarely turns into a bat, but if he did Theo would defend him with his life, as he normally does. Would be the most adorable bat, think Sulawesi Flying Fox.
