S.IV - Ep. 3: Negotiation Failure

-Fade in-

Caption: June 2, 2120. The day after the Erasure Incident.

Alia walks down a corridor and sees Gate on the phone in his office. He smiles at her as he closes his door.

ALIA: Hm?

GATE: (muffled) Aw, come onnn Scaravich! I take care of you, don’t I??

Her eyes widen as she puts her ear to the wall.

-pan inside his office-

Gate is sitting down at his desk chair with the phone close to his ear.

GROUND SCARAVICH: (o.s, filtered) Not interested.

GATE: Look, I don’t even know if you’ll find anything. Just- ..just go to the Forbidden Place and-

GROUND SCARAVICH: (o.s, filtered) The Forbidden Place!? Are you out of your mind???

GATE: Well..-

GROUND SCARAVICH: The last time I dug up info on ancient robots, I almost got pinched for it by the Maverick Hunter Police.

GATE: …and I rewarded you handsomely for that information… Did you forget that?

GROUND SCARAVICH: Hmph…

GATE: Have you forgotten whose taken you off the grid? …Hmm?

-flash-

GATE: (persuasive, taunting) I’ll pay you Douuuuuble…

There is a pause on the other end of the phone, until finally, an annoyed grunt can be heard.

GROUND SCARAVICH: Aggh, alright I’ll do it!

GATE: Yes!

GROUND SCARAVICH: But this is the last time; you hear me? If you dig too deep, you’re going to get dirty.

GATE: Why yes, of course… Just get me anything you can find on them.

GROUND SCARAVICH: …Why are you so interested in them… Out of curiosity. As your Treasure Hunter, I have a right to know…

Gate closes his eyes and smiles.

GATE: (growing excited) If I knew the secrets behind their power, just think of how much Good I could do!! I could make even better Reploids, stronger allies, and far more enhanced co-workers that I can actually count on. Hell! We could even develop a whole new race of-

GROUND SCARAVICH: Whoa! Forget I asked… I’ll check out the area, okay?

GATE: Okay. …Will you go today?

GROUND SCARAVICH: …Yeah…

-pan outside of the office-

On the other side of the wall, Alia stops listening in and stands upright with a frown and a clenched fist.

ALIA: (v.o, thinking) Gate’s up to his old tricks again! If he’s back in touch with Scaravich… and wants something from the Forbidden Place… then it can only lead to no good. (gasping) It’ll probably result in our termination!! I’ve got to stop him before it’s too late!

-cut to-

------------------------------------------------- EXT. THE FORBIDDEN PLACE – DAY -------------------------------------------------

Outside of an excavated mountain, Ground Scaravich is seen walking into an exposed Lab Bunker. He passes under a series of yellow police tape, that reads: Police Line – Do Not Cross.

Alia teleports into the area with a large beam cannon in her hands. She carefully and quietly treads through the police tape and primes her borrowed weapon.

-pan inside. The high pitched squeak of the cannon's charge rises.-

ALIA: Going somewhere?

Completely startled, the scarab stops dead in his tracks and turns around.

GROUND SCARAVICH: Gyaah. U-uh… Its not what it looks-

ALIA: (interrupting) I don't think the Maverick Hunters would appreciate it if they knew what you were up to...

GROUND SCARAVICH: N-now wait a minute. I can explain. Gate hired me!

ALIA: I know! …You've been a problem for quite some time, and it’s all because of him.

She sets the safety off of her cannon and points it at him.

GROUND SCARAVICH: B-believe me. It's all for a good cause! ALIA: Don’t even… Last time you were hired, it caused my old boss to go Maverick! You may have heard of him. His name was Doctor Doppler.

GROUND SCARAVICH: What!?

ALIA: I WON'T LET YOU RUIN OUR LIVES AGAIN!!!!

She fires the high-powered cannon and unleashes a thick stream of blue plasma upon the Reploid.

GROUND SCARAVICH: GYAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

He attempts to block his face but is overtaken by the blast.

-zoom in on the blast-

-fade to white-

------------------------------------------------- INT. LAYE LABS – Main Work Area – DAY -------------------------------------------------

Caption: November 16, 21XX. NOW

ALIA: (v.o, thinking) It may not have been Scaravich's fault, but the scrap robots he found, aided Doppler's research in Roboenza. Which, ultimately lead to a stronger strain of the Maverick Virus… I had to do it. I just had to… If he never existed… Maybe the World wouldn’t be how it is today…

Alia winces and frowns at the recent memory as the rest of the researcher's draw their attention to the news.

-pan to the wall mounted TV screen-

ANCHOR: (filtered) …and in response to Repliforce's attack on Sydney, the Maritime Battalion awaits further orders at the border of Repliforce's Naval Territory. Sources say that despite this attack, the Maverick Hunters are still willing to negotiate with Repliforce! As a further preventative measure, Maverick Hunter operatives have arrived in New Guinea in hopes of starting a dialogue with Repliforce's Guerilla Unit Commander, Web Spider…

[Insert Title Card: Negotiation Failure]

The Researchers react as the report goes on.

BLAZE PHOENIX: Hmph.. Fools. They should all just blow each other out of the sky! Then we wouldn’t have to hear about it..

GATE: (firm, disappointed) Heatnix!

INFINITY FLEA: If you ask me, we're already headed in that direction…

COMMANDER YAMMARK: We can only hope this whole thing blows over. Otherwise we really are in for some tough times ahead.

BLAZE PHOENIX: I don’t care who wins. Might makes right! Only the strongest will survive!!

GATE: (reacting) Nooo!

ALIA: (reacting, overlapping) You are so wrong!

BLIZZARD WOLFANG: You Hot-Head! Can’t you see that this is affecting real lives? We could be next. Regardless of who wins, the Reploids lose.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: …The only thing I'm concerned with is the potential damage that this War will do to the environment.

Gate snaps his fingers, at a sudden idea.

GATE: We need to help them. Yammark, Forest Protection is your area. Go ahead and investigate.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: (dilligent, dutiful) With pleasure, sir.

Dr. Laye looks worried as she offers a nod of approval for this mission.

DR. LAYE: Be careful out there. We don’t want to add any more layers of chaos to this mess.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Yes ma’am.

Four of Dr. Laye's researchers share a sheepish look as Commander Yammark passes them by.

?????: Hey. Don’t start another fire, okay?

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Shut up, Malek.

MALEK and his three friends, LIAM, TERRANCE and ZACH all burst out laughing unable to contain themselves.

Dr. Laye scowls at her own crew

DR. LAYE: Everyone, get back to work! All we can do now, is hope for the best.

She looks back at the TV screen as the news displays a live image of X and Zero standing by at the Jungle.

-cut to-

------------------------------------------------- EXT. NEW GUINEA – Papua Jungles - DAY -------------------------------------------------

X and Zero stand by their Unit members, ZEPHYR and TAKUMA while they wait for the 9th Unit to arrive. After a short moment LEAP FROG, CROSS- HARE and RECON RACCOON teleport in to join them.

X: Is this everyone?

RECON RACCOON: Baryon and Scorche are still training the newbies. Besides, it wouldn't be a good idea to have Scorche lightin' the place up.

ZERO: Good call. This is more than enough.

X nods in agreement with a sharp, determined glare in his eyes.

X: Lets go.

X leads the group down to a river, where he can spot Repliforce activity to his left, a short distance away.

X: I think it’s this way.

ZERO: Yeah, come on.

Zero takes the lead with a dash as he fearlessly hops down a short waterfall.

-pan to-

------------------------------------------------- EXT. PAPUA JUNGLES – Mubi River – DAY -------------------------------------------------

X, Zephyr, Takuma, Leap Frog, Cross-Hare and Recon Raccoon drop down from the Waterfall into the shallow end of Mubi River.

The Maverick Hunters follow the path along the river. As they pass by large chopped tree stumps, the Repliforce Mechaniloids go into defense mode.

X: Do not engage unless they attack us! Remember, we came here to /taah.

At the dash, X gets /struck by a Kill Fisher mechaniloid, which swiftly rams into his chest.

ZERO: Hmph. So much for that!

He pulls out his Z-Saber as the Kill Fisher quickly flies by, toward the other Hunters.

ZEPHYR: Hmph!

He strikes it down with a quick buster shot.

Two more Kill Fisher mechaniloids suddenly activate and hover up from the riverbed. They fly past X and Zero to enact their revenge, while X looks at a Fish-based Reploid ahead. The Reploid impressively flips his trident and guards himself in a defensive position.

X: Hey! Stand Down!! We just want to talk to Web Spider.

????: Hmph. Intruders! You want to speak to my Commander?? None shall pass the great King Poseidon!

ZERO: Uhh, what?

TAKUMA: Hahaha! The only way to Spidus is through him, Boss!!!

ZERO: Heh, fine with me.

He dashes over to KING POSEIDON and swings his saber, but the reploid high jumps away and rolls up into a ball in mid-air. A series of spikes shoot out from his back as they rain down on the group.

RECON RACCOON: Agh!! What the Hell, man!?

He throws a grenade back at the soldier, which latches onto his chest. Upon landing, King Poseidon explodes.

RECON RACCOON: Hahaha, yeah!! /Awhh!

Just then, another Kill Fisher /rams into Recon Raccoon from behind with a surprise attack.

CROSS-HARE: Hahahahaha!

He points and laughs at his cocky counter-part, while Leap Frog quickly blasts it away with a pistol.

LEAP FROG: Stay focused guys. C’mon!

He leads the 9th Unit, while The Elite and Shinobi Hunters lead them down to a cavernous waterfall.

-pan to-

------------------------------------------------- EXT. PAPUA JUNGLES – Bisi Falls – DAY -------------------------------------------------

X drops down and shoots at a Blast Raster, then he hops down further into the cavern. As he drops down, he notices two more Blast Raster’s and a Metal Gabyoall, that he passed by. Within moments, Zero and Takuma take on the strays that he missed. Nothing can be done about the Gabyoall, spike mechaniloid though. They only seem to stun the device, freezing it momentarily.

X nods at their admirable teamwork and looks below him. A short drop down is a further landing along the cavernous waterfall.

X: Let’s move on, guys.

He drops down and the rest join him. From a short distance, within an alcove of the cavern, X spots something that makes his heart skip a beat.

X: (gasping) On second thought…

He slowly walks towards the cavern, attracted to the teal light emitting from inside.

Zero smirks.

ZERO: (smiling) Heh. We’ll let you explore while WE move on, X.

Zero leads Takuma and the 9th Unit down further below by the Water Fall.

Zephyr stays behind.

ZEPHYR: Uh, sir?

X: Stand by, Zeph. I just need to check this out.

X runs inside the alcove as Zephyr stands by and folds his arms, somewhat confused.

-pan inside the alcove-

The glow of a Capsule illuminates X’s surprised face as Dr. Light’s form appears once again for the first time in a while.

DR. LIGHT: This war should never have happened, X… Why must Reploids fight each other? Why do these peace keepers persist in fighting each other? This must be some sort of mistake…

X frowns as his heart aches. Light tears form in his eyes as he nods in agreement.

X: I’m doing the best I can to prevent this from happening. But I don’t know how successful I will be.

The A.I of Dr. Light, his creator and only remaining father figure silently nods in response.

DR. LIGHT: I know… X, enter this capsule. Equip all four pieces of the Force Armor to discover the truth. Equip with this boot module and you will be able to hover in the air along with your air-dash. Be careful though, for you will only remain airborne for a few moments.

X: Right!

DR. LIGHT: It is effective for negotiating through higher and more dangerous terrain. Go now, my son. Stop this tragic war as soon as possible.

With those words, the form of Dr. Light’s A.I fades away. Before X enters the capsule, he is surprised by the sight of yet another capsule behind the one before him; only this one is pink.

X: Huh??

X enters and looks ahead at the Special Capsule curiously as rays of light upgrade his boots' processing data. With a new, yet familiar look, his boots now shine in layers of white and blue with a gold trim above the shoe. New tiny red thrusters are embedded into the boot’s design, which impress X a lot.

After receiving his upgrade, he steps out of the capsule and walks up to the pink one. He examines it and notices empty compartments along the bottom of the capsule, to which he already knows he must insert Sub-tanks and a Heart-Tank into. Only, this time there are two slots, which don’t seem to resemble that of sub-tanks. X: Hm. It must be locked. I’m just going to have to come back later.

He touches the rigid teal light, which repels him as if bidding goodbye. He looks bewildered at the capsule and shakes his hand, before turning around and dashing with his new thrusters over to Zephyr’s position.

ZEPHYR: Hey, boss. What took you so- Whooaa!!

X stylishly dashes to his soldier and strikes a victorious pose as he shows off his new boots with pride.

X: New boots!

ZEPHYR: Ah..hah…

X: Come on, Zephyr. We’d better catch up with the others.

ZEPHYR: Yes, sir.

-cut to-

------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. BISI FALLS – Mountainous Caverns - DAY -------------------------------------------------------------

Along the vast Bisi Falls, a series of logs fall from the top, all the way down to a dangerous water rapid, below. Zero, Takuma, Leap Frog, Cross-Hare and Recon Raccoon all carefully jump from log to log, one after another as they make it to the other side of the Waterfall, back to a new mountainous cavern.

Takuma, Cross-Hare and Recon Raccoon all pant feeling exhausted, while Leap Frog stands upright and looks ahead with Zero.

ZERO: Heh, you guys alright? You all look winded.

LEAP FROG: (smiling) As much as I’d hate to admit it, my team could do with a little more training.

ZERO: Mine, too.

TAKUMA: Heeey.

ZERO: Come on, guys! There’s more Guerillas up ahead.

Zero jumps across the rocky terrain as river water, splashes at his feet. He jumps onto a ladder and climbs up.

From above, a green Reploid who strongly resembles King Poseidon steps on his hands.

ZERO: Aaagh.

KING POSEIDON: You fools dare try to kill me?

A smart missile flies past Zero and curves towards the green reploid, destroying it.

-pan below-

CROSS-HARE: Yeah, we do!!

-pan above-

Another green version of King Posiedon hops down a ladder and points at them angrily with his trident.

KING POSEIDON: Hmph!! Soon you will find that I am everywhere!!

Zero narrows his eyes.

ZERO: Clones…

Zero dash-jumps across a rock on the other side, to ascend to his level and strike him down with a swift cut of the blade. The Reploid is cut in half and destroyed instantly.

Leap Frog, Cross-Hare and Recon Raccoon catch up to his position as they focus their attention on shooting down the Blast Rasters in the area that are clinging to the walls around them.

As Takuma slowly catches up to his leader he gives him a worried look.

TAKUMA: Do you really think they all cloned themselves?

ZERO: (annoyed) I don’t really care to be honest…

They continue their ascent up the numerous ladders along the cavern and spot another version of King Poseidon; only this one is blue.

KING POSEIDON: You will soon care very much what the Repliforce has in store for you, after you’ve betrayed us.

ZERO: (growling) Huurgh! SHUT UP!!!!

He fearlessly dashes into King Poseidon, taking the spikes head on as he cuts across his chest with his saber.

The rest of the group look worried, but feel justified in Zero’s actions.

Zero lets the others pass him up the last ladder as he takes a moment to compose himself.

-pan to-

------------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. PAPUA JUNGLES – Guerilla Cave Entrance - DAY -------------------------------------------------------------------

Takuma climbs up a ladder and becomes excited when he spots, what seems to be a security door.

TAKUMA: (gasping) Guys, look!

Leap Frog, Cross-Hare and Recon Raccoon join him.

LEAP FROG: Wow.

RECON RACCOON: Nice.

CROSS-HARE: Hmph.

Immediately a blue King Poseidon drops down from a tree, ahead of Takuma.

TAKUMA: (annoyed) Huuuuur!!

He runs over to the reploid and bashes him over the head with his deadly hammer, the T-Breaker.

LEAP FROG: Good one, Takuma!

CROSS-HARE: We’re not through yet!!

As they near the entrance to the cave two more King Poseidon’s surround the 3 of them from both sides.

RECON RACCOON: What, these two? Oh please..

He stylishly throws two sticky grenades at the King Poseidon’s which blow up upon impact.

CROSS-HARE: Not them, you idiot. /Them!

He /points off-screen and we do a 180 degree turn to see the stronger forces of the Guerilla Unit waiting for them. Poison Toad, Venom Varanus, Plated Platypus and Carapace Turtle all glare at them with wicked grins on their faces.

Leap Frog gasps at the sight of his brother.

POISON TOAD: Heheheh, well well well… If it isn’t Cross-Hare and Recon Raccoon…

VENOM VARANUS: Long time no sssseee.

RECON RACCOON: Haaaugh. You’re both just as skeevy as ever, I see.

POISION TOAD: Heheh. Leap Frog though… What’s a wimp like you doing with the Ranger Unit?

LEAP FROG: (annoyed) I’m their LEADER now!! Things have changed since you left us, brother.

POISON TOAD: Shya. They were desperate enough to let You command a combat Unit.

The Guerilla Unit all laugh at the Maverick Hunters they were once a part of.

PLATED PLATYPUS: Yes, I can see that Maverick Hunter standards have gone to an all time low. It was a good thing that we left when we did.

TAKUMA: And you really think you're so much better!?

CARAPACE TURTLE: We left because your leader is a Maverick, Takuma. You just haven’t realized it yet.

TAKUMA: Wha- How DARE You!!?

CARAPACE TURTLE: He nearly took out all of the Hunters when we investigated the X-Hunter Base 3 years ago.

TAKUMA: That was a Misunderstanding!!!

CARAPACE TURTLE: No. It was an act of treason, and Zero is about to commit another one upon the entire Repliforce unless we stop him and the rest of you pesky Hunters.

RECON RACCOON: Well if it’s a gang fight you want, you got it buddy!!

He takes out his grenades, ready to pounce.

PLATED PLATYPUS: Hmhmhm. You simpleton, this is not a gangfight. This is a War.

RECON RACCOON: I DON’T CAAARE!!!!

Recon Raccoon makes the first move, throwing a grenade right at Plated Platypus. The blast damages his armor, but barely affects him.

Meanwhile, Cross-Hare quickly sets his crosshair eye to focus on Venom Varanus, who just went invisible with camoflauge.

CROSS-HARE: Oh no.. Can’t hide from me, big guy.

He shoots a missile directly at Venom Varanus and causes his camoflauge to reveal itself.

Just to the right of them, Leap Frog and Poison Toad are rolling on the ground, attempting to choke each other out.

POISON TOAD: My my, little brother… You’ve become a feisty one, I see…

He punches him in the gut and cuts across the chest with a Poison Dagger that was hidden in his fist.

LEAP FROG: Gaaaaah!!!!

His blood already turns purple amidst the wound opening.

He falls to the ground, shivering.

POISON TOAD: Hahahahah… It’s been real, brother.

Further by the cave entrance, X and Zero stand with Zephyr as the group seems to get further and further away from them.

X: We don’t have time for this!

ZERO: That’s why we brought them, X. It’s gonna be fine.

X watches Leap Frog die with wide eyes. He gives Zero a crooked look, and then Zephyr a strong-willed look.

X: Zephyr. Zero and I need to move ahead. You have to step in for Leap Frog and take care of them for me.

Zephyr nods and salutes his Commander with a smile.

ZEPHYR: Yes, sir. It’ll be my honor.

With that, X and Zero nod to Zephyr as they destroy the core of the security door to the cave entrance.

As they run inside, we pan back to the battle.

TAKUMA: HUUUURRRR-aaaghh!!

Takuma rushes after Carapace Turtle and strikes him hard across the chest with his T-Breaker.

CARAPACE TURTLE: Kaaauuughh.

The dents in his armor show. Carapace Turtle is no match for Takuma’s hammer.

Takuma shoves him to the ground, plants his foot on his chest and violently smashes Carapace Turtle in the face, crushing his skull entirely.

Plated Platypus turns to his fallen friend and throws Recon Raccoon away like a rag doll.

RECON RACCOON: Whuh? Aaaaaah!

Recon Raccoon is flung near Cross-Hare, who seems to have damaged the ocular nerves that power his crosshair eye. With a useless eye-piece dangling from his eye, it only serves as a distraction, so he pulls it out of his socket.

VENOM VARANUS: Hahahaha, you’re MIINE NOOW!!!!

He spits out deadly acid all across his body, as Cross-Hare is unable to protect himself.

CROSS-HARE: (suffering) Guuaaahh… N-nnooo…

Boils appear across Cross-Hare’s white fur and Recon Raccoon can tell that this is it.

RECON RACCOON: (afraid) C-Cross Haare???

Cross-Hare and Venom Varanus dive after each other, as the reptile lays out another stream of viscious acid in mid-air. This causes Cross-Hare to explode as Venom Varanus touches down to the ground with a wicked grin.

RECON RACCOON: NOOOOO!!!!!!

He tosses an array of sticky grenades at Venom Varanus and pulls out his handheld laser pistol. He fires and aims directly at the heart.

VENOM VARANUS: (reacting) GAAAAAAHHHHH. /OHHH!!!!

With grenades latched onto his shoulders, legs and a thin red laser burning a hole directly through his chest, it was only a matter of time, before the bombs would /explode and scatter Venom Varanus’ body to pieces.

Without warning, Zephyr blasts a golden charge shot at Poison Toad’s back, which bowls him over.

With a blackened back, he slowly rises to his feet.

POISON TOAD: You damned fool.

ZEPHYR: The only thing that’s ‘damned foolish’ is the fact that I haven’t used full power yet.

He pulls in two hands and controls the density of his Buster into a steady stream of golden plasma, which wipes out Poison Toad, at the expense of all of his power reserves.

Plated Platypus and Takuma stop in mid-battle to admire the extremely powerful blast of light. Then Takuma takes advantage of the distraction and knocks Plated Platypus out with his Hammer jammed across the side of his face.

RECON RACCOON: Wh-what.. the Hell.. was that!?

ZEPHYR: It’s my Ultimate Move.. The Zephyr Cannon. The only problem is, once I use it, I’m down for the count.

RECON RACCOON: Fshhhhh. Right.

Takuma walks over to the two with a solemn face.

TAKUMA: Did we get ‘em?

ZEPHYR: Looks like it.

RECON RACCOON: God damn it… There goes my Team.. again…

ZEPHYR: What now?

RECON RACCOON: I’m headed back.. I gotta break the news to the other guys. Ahhh damn it. This sucks.

With that, Recon Raccoon teleports out of the Jungle.

The two look blankly at the disappearance of Recon Raccoon. Then they survey the damage.

TAKUMA: …Let’s go back to our Commanders.

ZEPHYR: Good idea.

-cut to-

------------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. PAPUA JUNGLES – Guerilla Repliforce Facility - DAY -------------------------------------------------------------------

X and Zero run out of the cave entrance, into the walled off campus of the Guerilla Unit's facility. It is mostly outdoors with small depot stations where weapons are manufactured.

Upon their path, they are instantly greeted by mechaniloid snakes. X quickly shoots them down as they run up to a tree stump and jump over it.

X: Ya know, all of this shooting on their turf will only make negotiating more difficult.

ZERO: Like we really have a choice.. You know this is all gonna amount to a fight against Webs anyway.

He cuts down a Blast Raster in their way.

X: Right, but any chance that we can prevent that we have to /taahh.

As they climb a short hill, an unseen electric web shoots out a solid line of electricty, which /catches X by surprise and stuns him as they pass.

ZERO: Grr!

An annoyed Zero slashes at the solid beam and manages to shut it down somehow.

X: Ah.

X dashes ahead and jumps over the next web beam he sees. He fires upon a Blast Raster ahead of him and looks down.

A waterfall trickles down into a shallow river, which leads to steps inside a depot station a story below him.

X: Hm. I think we're getting close.

X drops down into the shallow river, where he is lead to a cave, which looks more technologically developed on the inside.

-pan to-

------------------------------------------------------------------- INT. Guerrilla HQ – Depot Stations - DAY -------------------------------------------------------------------

X walks in and spots a few bee mechaniloids flying past a set of Blast Rasters, which are attached to the ceiling. X aims at the Blast Rasters, as Zero touches down to the watery floor behind him with a splash. Zero narrows his eyes at the familiar bee mechaniloids and swats at them with his Z-Saber.

ZERO: What is this place?

X: I don’t know..

They run through the corridor and take a short stairwell down, where they spot a series of bee hives with the Repliforce logo on them.

ZERO: What the-

X: Huh?

ZERO: These are the same hives from the Reploid Research Facility on Laguz Island!!

X: Whaat??

Numerous bees sift out from open panels of the hives.

ZERO: Web Spider must've grabbed them from Blast Hornet's station after I took care of him. Huuuurgh!!!

Completely revved up and annoyed, Zero rushes through the hall, tearing away at the swarm of bees and the hives they come with his Z-Saber.

X is awestruck at the sight of Zero's new skills on the saber. Whatever Colonel did last summer, he taught him well. If only they could end this War right now, before it could get any worse. Then, maybe they could retain a friendship with the Repliforce again.

The end of the hall becomes cavernous once again as they leave the depot. Ahead of them, they spot another waterfall dropping down a small crevice with ladders leading further down into the forest. The area is protected by a few Blast Rasters, which Zero quickly destroys in no time.

When X and Zero drop down, they spot what seems to look like a labyrinth of tall trees ahead of them. X analyzes the path ahead of them and lets out a short sigh.

TAKUMA: (calling out, from afar) Hey! Wait for us!!

X: Huh?

X and Zero look up to see Takuma and Zephyr drop down to their position from the ladders above them. They both smile as their subordinates join them.

X: Where’s the rest?

Zephyr shakes his head with a frown.

ZEPHYR: The Raccoon went back to HQ. The rest of them didn’t make it…

ZERO: (whispering) Shit.

X’s eyes widen in despair and he grimaces with a frustrated brow. He clenches a fist and slowly charges up.

X: (charging up) God damn it!! This didn’t have to happen!!! I’ll never forgive Web Spider for this!

With that, he dashes ahead of the group, fully charged as they all follow.

Ahead of X, a web beam juts out from a tree. He fires his charge shot at it and closes off the beam, allowing him the ability to kick-jump up the tree. Two metal braces bind the tree, which serve as platforms for X to climb up. At the top platform, the tree has been partially cut in the middle. X surmises that this was made to serve as cover during enemy raids such as this.

When X gets to the top he turns around and looks at his companions.

X: Be careful guys. We might get some unexpected surprises in these trees.

As he speaks, a series of mechaniloid snakes all crawl over him from the top of the tree.

X: Wauuugh!

He shakes them off, skeeved out as he shoots some of them down, and steps on a couple.

X: Agh.

X jumps away, down to the next metal braced tree. Zero takes care of the stragglers, while X stands by the next cover spot within the tree below them.

Ahead of X, the metal braces stick out further, connecting the set of trees ahead of them as if it were some sort of obstacle course.

X: Web Spider had a lot of time on his hands.

ZERO: Shya. You’re telling me.

He lightly chuckles as he follows his partner through the obstacle. They take down a couple of more snake mechaniloids, before a web beam blocks the two of them from dropping down to the ground.

They fire and slash at the beam, but it doesn’t go down.

X: (annoyed) Agh.

ZERO: What the Hell?

Two little spiders climb the electric beam, so X takes his aim at them. Suddenly the beam disappears.

ZERO: Huh?

X: Oh.

They jump away before the trap can reactivate again. Takuma and Zephyr follow them and touch down to the ground.

X: I think the beam isn’t created by the web, but the spiders who Made the web.

Zero shakes his head annoyed.

ZERO: Ugh, whatever!

They move on together as a group, carefully climbing between the next set of trees, while avoiding the web beams that attempt to stop them. At the top of the tree obstacle, the web beam traps only get more intricate as X and Zero let Zephyr and Takuma tackle them.

TAKUMA: Hurr!

ZEPHYR: Yah!!

They strike the next two web beams down, while Zero cuts down the snake mechaniloids crawling at their feet. Just ahead of them, a third web beam blocks their path, which X shoots down, next to their subordinates.

When they drop down from this obstacle, X can spot the gateway from afar.

X: Yes! We made it!!

Suddenly from a distance, a violent explosion can be heard, north of them.

X: Haww?

ZERO: What the-!?

ZEPHYR: What do you think? Suicide bomber??

Takuma looks hard at the fiery explosion by the trees in the distance.

TAKUMA: I dunno. I don’t think so. That area doesn’t seem to be occupied by Repliforce at all.

X: You two investigate. We have to talk to Web Spider.

ZEPHYR & TAKUMA: Yes sir!

They run off in the other direction, away from the labyrinthine tree obstacle, and eventually out of the brush, which seemed to enclose this Facility.

X looks over to a bee hive ahead of them and fires off a charge shot, which destroys the whole thing.

A few angry bee mechaniloids fly out, which Zero destroys with a jumping slash.

Just ahead of him, right before the gateway, two well-placed electric webs create a wall with their beams, blocking them from entering.

ZERO: Oh, please.

He makes a downward axe-handle slash and the beams are gone. Then, he quickly dashes with X toward the actual gate. As it opens, they notice that they have entered yet another depot. Such a gateway must indicate that they have reached their destination.

X and Zero stop before the gate and give each other a look.

ZERO: Okay man, you ready for this?

X: Yeah. …Whatever happens, happens.

Zero grins as he opens the next gate and they both walk through.

The moment X and Zero step inside the last gate of the depot, they spot a gigantic laser cannon, larger than life.

They both gasp.

ZERO: You were right, X. We did the right thing by coming here first.

Suddenly, from out of the brush of the trees, Web Spider appears, hanging from his web.

WEB SPIDER: Ah... Zero. I've been expecting you. ..but X too.. Now that’s a surprise…

ZERO: Spider! You work for Repliforce now?!

WEB SPIDER: Ah Yes... You weren’t around for our little encounter on Laguz Island. I lead a renegade unit now. Far more respectable than your insipid Maverick Hunters!!

Zero glances at X, then looks at Web Spider and takes a quick breath.

ZERO: There's still time. Call off the coup!

WEB SPIDER: No. I know where my loyalties lie.

X: Spidus, I know we have our differences, but this is ridiculous!! We don’t need to do this.

Web Spider accusatorily points at X.

WEB SPIDER: You've labeled us all as Mavericks! I won't let you pass. Turn back now!

X: I can't do that. You’ve been storing a secret weapon here, which is disconcerting to us.

WEB SPIDER: And you falsely labeled us as an enemy to the public, when the real enemy is standing right /There, NEXT TO YOU!

At the dash he /points directly at Zero, who offers a wicked grin in response.

ZERO: Then we Fight!! It’s the only way to settle this!!!

X: (shocked) Zero!

Zero dashes and jumps over to Web Spider with his Saber out.

ZERO: Haaaaaaaaaah!

He lifts up his arm and swipes the blade in a downward slash as Web Spider attempts to pull himself away from his web.

So let’s say you’re now in charge of creating a Spider-Man TV Series, as many seasons and episodes you want, as long as it remains genuinely faithful to the comics; Peter gets his powers when he’s 17, only Flash and Liz are with him in high school, ect, and ending it all with a Revelations like series finale. You’re allowed to streamline some things now that there’s the benefit of hindsight. You’re also allowed to be as faithful to the comics as possible. What do you create?

Lol I’ve been planning this for like 15 years. Currently I’d do this. 12 seasons 26 episodes each, and 3 movies.

I’d play it as a biography of Peter’s life from the day he became Spidey to the day he stopped, with a mind of making a version of the MC2 universe the canonical future for this version of Spidey. I’d set it in the 1960s as depicted by Ditko but have the technology and fashions change to broadly speaking reflect the time periods that Peter spent parts of his life in. In other words his high school episodes will be set in what looks like the 1960s, Gwen would die in what would look like the early 1970s and he’d get married in what would look like the late 1980s. But cultural references would be kept to a minimal. Effentivly it’d be set in a world where fashions and technology happened to occur way more quickly thanin the real life, so 1962-1998’s fashions and technologies all happened but across like 12 years.

Also I’d have Peter’s look change. He’d start out with the Coke bottle glasses and keep them throughout season 1, and he’d have a black and red costume, complete with a big blue spider on his back and web pits. The idea being this is a rookie spidey who’s awkward and not yet become the Spidey we perhaps recognize. He’d sell his glasses in the final episodes and get his costume wrecked in the finale, requiring him to make a new one, the classic Romita Senior outfit minus the web pits. He’d keep that until he got his black suit which would be modelled on Frenz’ take upon it. the cloth Black suit would have more of a McFarlane influence with huge eyes. MJ would make him a new red+blue costume before his first big showdown with Venom which would resemble the McFarlane/Bagley 90s look. Obviously Scarlet Spider’s look would be modelled on Bagley’s design, Spider-Ben on Romita Jr’s and his final outfit would be modelled on Romita Jr’s too. And Sal Buscema’s take would be the outfit worn by Flash when he pretends to be Spider-Man.

Movie 1: Amazing Fantasy: The Birth of Spider-Man: The origin, MAYBE rounded off with ASM #1’s plot.

Season 1: Basically everything up to when he graduated with every issue serving as an episode. I’d omit guest appearances like the F4, the Torch, DD, the Circus of Crime. I’d supplant the ASM #5’s plot with one about Jason Macendale armed with tech abducting Flash when he’s dressed as Spidey. He’d be a stand in for the Headman from Untold Tales and the episode would end with his mysterious boss speaking to Spidey remotely through a camera. This would of course be the Goblin who I’d have debut in what was his second appearance hijacking the Spidey fan club. I’d have Doc Ock unmasking Spidey end that episode and have most of it dedicated to Betty Brant’s origin told in flashbacks as she’s abducted. I’d do Spider-Man No More here, combining it with ASM #18’s plot line as it’d redundant to have him quit in big ways twice. So one episode would be ASM #18’s plot with bits of ASM #50 mixed in, ending with him throwing away his suit. Then the next episode would be about his Spidey free life before he triumphantly returns. The Molten man episodie would end with Aunt May collapsing rather than Spidey graduating.

This would lead directly into the MP Trilogy’s main storyline but to spice things up the Master Planner would hire some of Spider-Man’s villains as extra obstacles in his way, thus we’d adapt the original Sinister Six story too. The last episode would end with Peter graduating and then sitting alone to make a new suit. Also Betty would leave town.

Season 2: It’d kick off with a recovered Peter starting college and someone hiring Kraven to go after Spidey like in ASM #34. The key difference here being that Kraven dons Spider-man’s old costume and when Spidey finally shows up to deal with him he’s sporting his new red and blue Romita Sr threads. Then we’d get the Robot Master stuff, the first Rhino story and a few other stories before around episode 6 or 7 getting to the Goblin unmasking Spider-Man and revealing himself as Norman. I’d have Norman seriously injured to the point where Spider-Man has to save him or else he’d die. He’d sweat about Norman knowing the truth like in Spider-Man: Blue before finding out Norman has amnesia and that most people don’t recover their memories. Seeing how happy Harry is, he decided to let it go and give Norman a chance. The rest of the season is basically adapting the big Romita era stories (sans Spider-Man No More of course), with an emphasis on Kingpin and fewer Doc Ock stories. POSSIBLY I might do Doc Ock’s origin from Unlimited #3 here, I dunno. It’d either be here or next season though. The season would wrap up with George Stacy’s death and with Gwen leaving.

Also I’d foreshadow a little that Norman has a healing factor via his speedy recovery.

Also, also, rather than space spores creating Colonel Jupiter, I’d have it be the Moon Gem that actually turned him into man-Wolf. It’d be an artefact he’d bring back from the moon and it’d increase his strength and affect his mind so that he’d desire to have the gem for some unknown reason (we’ll find out later).

Season 3: This would be half a team up season, introducing characters from the Marvel Universe who’re relevant to Spider-Girls’ stories, so the F4, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, Spider Woman, Arana, Julia Carpenter, the Avengers, the X-Men, etc. It’d begin with Peter heading to London to find Gwen and inadvertently winding up in a team up, I’ve not figured out with whom yet (maybe Ice Man and Firestar for funsies, MAYBE Excalibur so we’d get Spider Phoenix????), anyway it’d adapt ASM #95 in any case. Then we’d go to the drug trilogy but I’ve not yet decided how to handle this. On the one hand it’s iconic. On the other it’s questionable by modern standards to have Peter see Norman remember the truth and then just let him go on, hoping he doesn’t remember. Maybe you could play it as him being worried that turning Norman in could trigger his memory, I dunno. I feel you could swap out the action part of the story with something else, provided you kept all the Harry drug stuff the same, and maybe had the story be about Norman STARTING to remember and unravel. When peter goes to him for a job though he’d catch a glimpse of a weird painting, depicting the Scriers and Norman would give a little background on their alleged history.

I’d also have the Six Arm Saga and debut of Morbius happen here, but link it in with some illegal genetic experiments someone within ESU is doing on the side for the mob. These experiments would lead to the creation of Vermin who owns Spidey’s ass until he’s saved by someone at the end of the episode. After Vermin beats a retreat, that someone helps Spidey up and it’s Captain America! Cue an ep of Spidey and Cap on the helicarrier with Chameleon using Artificial Life similicra to infiltrate it. Cap is abducted at the end of this episode and the Avengers show up accusing Spider-Man of it. Cue the next 2 episodes where Spider-Man teams up with the Avengers to take on the Hulk in Canada and Seth, the Serpent God of Death. This would then lead into the final 2 episodes which I’ll get to in a moment.

Also in this season I’d have a two part team up with Spidey and Spider Woman. Madame Web would summon them and reveal she is a member of the Spider Clan. Her granddaughter Anya Corazon, has been abducted by the Tarantula clan and Peter and Jess need to rescue her. This would allow Spidey to meet Madame Web, Jessica Drew and Anya of course and foreshadow the Black Tarantula. The Tarantula Clan’s outfits would resemble Julia Carpenter’s Spider Woman and Arachne outfits. This would lead to a ‘filler’ ep about Spider-Man fixing his suit and daydreaming about other costumes and powers he could have. This would be an excuse to pay homage to the Spider Armour, Captain Universe and a few other classic outfits for Spider-Man. the episode would end with him tossing away a doodle of the black costume inspired by his previous adventure. Later we’d get Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut but the story would end with the X-Men showing up. The episode after that would be a Spidey/X-Men team up but Mastermind would mind control them into fighting, thus we’d get Spider-Man vs. the X-Men like Secret Wars #3

The final 2 eps would be the Death of Gwen Stacy. I’d keep this pretty much the same but with the exception of having Gwen awake and trying to escape. The moments just before she’s knocked off the bridge Peter would try to earn her trust by starting to unmask.

Season 4: It’d kick off with the Jackal hiring Punisher to take out Spider-Man. Apart from that it’d be basically ASM #123-149, all about Peter grieving Gwen, falling in love with MJ, etc. I would cut some of the dumber stuff out though and condense some multi-parters into single stories. I’d whack in some team ups for good measure too as MTU was around at this time. One major change I’d make is that I’d have Man-Wolf show up as a result of similar experiments that created Vermin and ditch the moon gem stuff. However, Man-Wolf would eventually go after the Moon gem but it’s energies would in fact revert him to normal. The clprit behind Man-wolf and Vermin would be revealed as Miles Warren.

One smaller change I’d make would be to omit ASM #150. It’s a great issue but it’s not a great season finale like ASM #149 would be. BUT I’d keep the MJ scene from it by simply moving it to the events of ASM #149. The idea is that when the bomb hits zero, everything fades to white, Peter would wake up amidst debris, when Gwen asks how he knows he’s the real one, he’d respond that ‘he just knows’. Later as he’d be approaching his apartment we’d get a flashback revealing that he was thinking of MJ as the bomb hit zero and so he couldn’t be the clone. Cue him finding MJ in the apartment, end season.

Season 5: Basically the Len Wein run with a dash of Marv Wolfman. It’d wrap up with a combination of 3 Wolfman era stories. MJ proposing to MJ, Spidey vs. the Burglar from ASM #200 and finally Peter graduating. A major change would be that MJ would literally leave town immediately after rejecting Peter, and it’d be a break up not just a rejection. But we the audience would see a private moment with MJ where we can tell she wasn’t nearly as casual about it as she let on.

Movie 2: Mayhem in Manhattan: Mid way through the season I’d adapt this Spider-Man novel into another animated film.

Season 6: It’d kick off with Spider-Man meeting Black Cat. The season really would be about Peter dating different people casually and more seriously. Deb Whitman, Cissy Ironwood, etc. He’s work for the Daily Globe and start Grad school. The season finale would be the Owl/Octopus War ending with Felicia seriously injured and Peter ripping out Otto’s arms as a result. The season would end with Spider-Man and Black Cat now an item. But I’d omit the events of Spec #77-79. Also at the Daily Globe Peter would meet and work with Eddie Brock.

Season 7: It’d start with the debut of the Hobgoblin, cover Felcia’s recovery, gaining new powers (from other people continuing Warren’s experiments with animal DNA), MJ’s return, Peter dropping out of Grad school, MJ’s big reveal and origin, and culminate in Peter and Black Cat breaking up and Kingpin leaving NYC. The Kingpin battle would be taken from Wolfman’s run moreso than Spec #100 because that’s just a better fight.

Of course the Alien Costume Saga would happen. I’d keep the canon stuff but add in the elements of it corrupting him, with the extra spice of Felicia actually preferring this darker Spider-Man.

Peter would get the costume differently though. Instead of Secret Wars, criminals would try and obtain the Moon Gem, which was being hosted as ESU. The fight would culminate in a Kinglsey clothing factory and as a last resort Spidy would smash the gem by throwing it into one of the machines in the factory.

Licking his wounds afterwards he’d be leaning against the conveyer belt when a tiny black ball would emerge from the shards of the Moon Gem, enlarge and when Spidey noticed it we’d recreate Secret Wars #8.

BTW, to give readers clues to the Hobgoblin’s identity I’d have him record a voice journal but with a voice changer so we get his inner thoughts sorta.

Also Jason Macendale would show back up but not as jack O’lantern.

Season 8: It’d start with ASM #260-261, the Rose/Hobgoblin story where they abduct a pregnant Liz Allan. The season would omit a lot of irrelevant stuff like the golden notebook subplot, the Beyonder, etc. But it’d keep stuff like Crusher Hogan, When Commeth the Commuter, Web #13 and other classic stories. The three central subplots of this season would be the Ned/Flash/Betty love triangle, Peter and MJ’s ‘will they won’t they’ romance and the Hobgoblin mystery. However instead of Lance Bannon, Eddie Brock would be one of the suspects. Brock would be threatened directly by Spider-Man when he starts writing Sin Eater articles and that’s just about the only thing I’d change from the Death of Jean DeWolff storyline. Most of the real important stuff from this era (sans Doc Ocks mental breakdown) I’d keep the same with the exception of not making Jason Macendale the new Hobgoblin. After Peter and Felicia break up I’d have Betty go all Cult of Love from later in the comics before the finale being yet another way later story: Hobgoblin Lives. It’s just more logical to wrap up the Hobgoblin mystery here rather than end it badly and wait years to fix it.

Season 9: This is kind of the least accurate season but hear me out. Okay so we start off with Peter proposing to MJ, her rejecting him, then her agreeing, just like in the comics. BUT...we don’t have them then get married. Something as huge as your protagonist’s wedding should be the first or final episode of a season, not episode 3 or 4 or even the mid-season finale. So I’d grab a load of post-wedding stories and tweak them to be about Peter and MJ as an engaged couple. The stories would be selected to somehow tie-in with their relationship. The idea is to have the couple gradually develop doubts. So we’d have Jonathan Caesar. We’d have the Drunk Spider-Man issue but with Jason Macendale now the Demogoblin (it’s just a costume no demonic stuff) instead of the Hobgoblin. MAYBE we’d even have a heavily rewritten Jason Jerome subplot. We’d have Felicia turning back up to stir up trouble as she did in the 1990s. You get the picture. Because the finale is the wedding, which is obviously light on action, the episodes before the wedding I’d finally do Venom. Venom is great at generating dynamic action set pieces so he’d kind of compensate for no action in the actual finale. Venom is also an ideal choice because this whole season is about a romantic relationship, and Venom is in a sense an ‘unholy union’ between two entities. We’d draw upon the fact that Brock’s wife left him and ASM #300’s climax happening in a church bell tower is just too perfect for the wedding theme of this season. One element I’d throw in though would be for Spidey to have his ass handed to him by Venom once only to get away. MJ makes Spidey a new red and blue costume. The idea being that in wearing Venom’s colours the colours Felicia preferred him in, the colours that don’t represent his true self, he won’t win against this dark version of himself. But the red+blues are Mj’s preferred suit, MJ’s colours and reflective of who he really is.

The season finale would be the wedding but split over 2 episodes. The first ep would end with Peter going to see Felicia the night before his wedding and MJ going off with Bruce (or maybe Jason Jerome).

The actual final episode would be them vocing their doubts and insecurities to Felicia and Jason/Bruce and through talking with them, and reflecting on the events of the season and their lives in general they realise they’re just getting jitters. If they weren’t going to go through with this they would’ve walked away a long time ago. In fact their hardships this season prove they can handle it and make it work. So they get married but in typical Parker luck fashion their ride gets caught in traffic en route to the honey moon, so they gotta web swing their way there into the sunset.

Movie 3: Fearful Symmetry: Kraven’s Last Hunt: I briefly considered making this the opening of the next season, the season finale of the last season or the mid-season finale of the last season but it just didn’t work. It’s too iconic to change up like that it HAS to happen shortly after the wedding. Making it a movie would help sell the fact that for the first time ever we’re suddenly hearing Kraven and Vermin’s inner thoughts which would be weird to happen randomly in the middle of a season. A movie though can sort of be it’s own thing.

I wouldn’t change anything beyond adding a kind of prologue chronicling Kraven’s history up until now, who Vermin is, Peter and MJ’s marriage, Ned’s death, just some stuff that’s a small story unto itself and can allow the movie to stand on it’s own a bit more.

Season 10: Basically this is the Harry Osborn Saga from DeMatteis’ run. I’d cut down on the Vermin stuff. Maybe I’d cut out Peter’s parents from Child Within. I dunno because I would totally do a rewritten Robot Parents story arc in this season because I think that story could be compelling if done properly. I’d just have it happen BEFORE Harry dies, which naturally would be the season finale. Also in this season we’d introduce Carnage, Tombstone, the Joe Robertson/Tombstone subplot and the Return of the Sinister Six. One thing I’d add into the latter story would be the character of Carolyn Trainer who’s quite taken with Doc Ock. Spidey and Ock would have a huge showdown adapting their battle from Spec #79 since that’s probably the best Spidey/Ock fight ever. I might also do an adaptation of Soul of the Hunter and/or Torment, both because it’s a famous Lizard story and because it’d set up Kraven’s death withint he context of the show and thus give Chameleon motivation for the Robot Parents stuff.

Season 11: A heavily abridged and rewritten version of...the Clone Saga!

I’ve actually plotted this episode by episode. The gist is Aunt May has a stroke, Ben shows up, we introduce Carrion who busts out Carnage in exchange for some of his symbiote. Spidey fights Carnage but when they’re both affected by a poison Carrion tests out, Ben steps in to help. Venom also escapes, leading to Ben becoming Scarlet Spider. Peter is dying of the poison leading into the Web of Death story where Doc Ock cures him and Kaine then kills Otto. Web of Death could’ve been the ultimate end for Doc Ock so in a show that’s finite it makes sense to end him with that.

Anyway, Peter learns MJ is pregnant, he and Ben reunite with the Jackal, Carrion and the Gwen clone. They learn Carrion is a clone of Warren and was in fact the Warren from Shea stadium, he’s got telepathic powers and is using them to keep Gwen’s clone (Joyce Delany) under Warren’s control. Warren sows doubt as to who the real guy is.

Aunt May dies, Peter goes to jail, a third Peter Parker shows up. But instead of being Spidercide I’d make him a human/symbiote hybrid, and he’d be this show’s version of Toxin.

Peter becomes Scarlet Spider to clear his own name, learns who Kaine is, finds out he’s a clone, DOESN’T hit MJ but he does run away distraught, etc.

I’d have Maximum Clonage happen but very, very differently. No army of spider clones, no Punisher, no nonsense like that. Warren is going to unleash his virus but wants to keep MJ safe as her baby could be interesting to study. So he abducts her and gives inoculations to the virus to everyone. MJ refuses so he asks Gwen to do it as she’s MJ’s friend. Gwen’s clone is kind of not all there due to the mind control so when MJ breaks her own dose of the inoculation, Gwen simply administers her dose to MJ. Ben shows up to save MJ and knocks out Carrion. Carrion as it turns out was keeping Toxin under control so he freaks out, grabs MJ and Gwen, asks Ben to choose between them and tosses them both off the roof, but then he pins Ben so he can’t save either. Peter shows up to save MJ, Warren instinctively jumps after Gwen to save her but out of nowhere, a new Green Goblin shows up to save her and Warren dies. The Goblin, Kaine, Ben and Peter fight Toxin who’s gonna be losing until he bonds with Carrion and is now too much for everyone else. Gwen meanwhile would be trying to defuse the device that’d be administering the virus, but starting to degenerate due to the stress.

Her last ditch effort would be to implore Carrion/Toxin to save them all. He’s a clone of Peter and Miles Warren so he loves her and since she’s not inoculated she’s gonna die. Carrion/Toxin smother the virus and absorb the poison into themselves, dying.

Kaine takes Gwen’s clone away as he understands the pain of degeneration and Peter retires, making Ben the new Spider-Man.

The second half of the season is a condensed Spider-Ben era but with Lady Ock, Spider-Carnage, Green Goblin V and Blood Brothers as the central storylines. We’d do some flashbacks to Lost Years and wrap up with Revelations. As a final little change I’d have Peter’s new Spider-Man costume be one created by Ben before he decided to make his own one.

Season 12: Basically the post-Clone Saga era. This final season would be wrapping stuff up, giving a lot of characters their swan songs, but the focus would be on Peter and Norman’s rivalry, Norman owning the Bugle, etc.

We’d introduce Black Tarantula, have a final gang war storyline in which Kaine is hired as a mercenary, Daredevil and Richard Fisk would die, and Kingpin would finally go to jail for good.

I’d also sort of adapt the Revenge of the Green Goblin storyline. I’d have Mysterio on Norman’s orders create a ‘dream’ for Peter Parker where he imagines MJ dies in a plane crash and everything goes wrong, Norman would torment him and try and tempt him into becoming his son and heir. Peter resists and escapes the nightmare.

The season/show would wrap up with Peter reclaiming baby May and a final showdown with the Green Goblin. Norman would be rocking his Marvel Knights armour and be juiced up with Phil Urich’s strength enhancing Goblin mask. Also Phil Urich will have been black mailed into becoming the Goblin on Norman’s behalf so he could clear his own name.

I’ll spare you the details, but essentially Norman’s plan involves murdering billions of people, taking control of the world and potentially endangering the life of baby May. He’s ultimately killed when his identity is revealed to the press, his glider decapitates him and triggers a gagillion explosions. Said explosions would wreck the Bugle leading to Spidey lifting it up like in the Final Chapter. Before he died though, Norman would try to beat Spidey by administering an antidote to his powers that he would’ve tested on Scorpion. He’d not give Peter the full dose though.

When all is said and done, Peter’s got an injured leg (but he’s not lost either of them) and his spider powers are gone, maybe forever, so he retires to be a family man.

This then leads into Spider-Girl where we learn over time he regained some of his old powers but they amount to allowing him to crawl on walls, have a vague reading from his spider sense and render him fit for his age. His leg injury still plays up though. Basically he’s got power but not so much that it’d be reasonable for him to go back to heroism.

My Top 20 Favorite Video Games

(Listed in the order in which I played them)

Pokémon Red Version - Along with my matching red Game Boy Pocket, this was the first video game I owned that was purely mine and not handed down from an older kid. I still go back and replay this every couple of years on that very same Game Boy Pocket or on the 3DS Virtual Console. I know there’s FireRed and a whole series of more modern Pokémon games at my disposal but the original Red Version easily gets the most nostalgia points. Sometimes that’s what it’s all about, no? Banjo-Kazooie - Similarly, the N64 became my first home console that wasn’t a hand-me-down and it came equipped with both bear and bird (complete with “screaming about it on Christmas morning”). After going back and replaying this almost twenty years later I gained new appreciation for how goofy and colorful it is. Treasure Trove Cove is so fucking catchy. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle - From its kickin’ soundtrack to its satisfying controls to its random-ass virtual pet simulator this game has it all. Multiplayer was always pretty exciting too, I remember many an afternoon trying to one-up a friend during a grind race. No 3D Sonic game compares to this if you ask me, although Sonic Heroes and Sonic Unleashed come sort of close in their own ways. What I wouldn’t give for a proper Sonic Adventure 3... Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes - I remember playing this at my local arcade in my youth before eventually getting a port of it for the Xbox 360. The look of its 2D sprites are phenomenal and - if it will help you understand why I love this game - I’m singing “I Wanna Take You For a Ride” to myself as I type this. Metroid: Zero Mission - This was the first Metroid game I ever actually beat, and it was the game that made me fall in love with the series. I love Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Samus Returns as well but I like Zero Mission’s visual style the most. I was so thrown for a loop when Samus lost her Power Suit towards the end of the game but it only made getting it back that much sweeter. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - I started playing this one in 2004 but didn’t officially beat it until way later in 2017. For a while I had a pattern I’d go through every few years of “start playing, enjoy it for a while, get lost, and start over for some reason.” Took me thirteen years to get serious about it but it earned its place as my favorite of the 3D Metroid games. I felt so fulfilled once it was complete, like I was achieving a childhood dream. Kingdom Hearts II - I don’t think I would’ve gotten into this game if not for my friend’s suggestion but I couldn’t thank him enough for it. This is another one of those games you only vaguely understand when you’re a kid only to realize how complex and intuitively designed it is in your adulthood. After the long wait, Kingdom Hearts III proved to be pretty satisfying but I just have too much history with its predecessor for it not to win a spot on this list. Jak 3 - Though my interest in this series burned fast and bright, this game still sticks out to me as one of the best I’ve ever experienced. I played the third installment before Jak and Daxter or Jak 2 but that’s fine because it’s the best goddamn one. Driving around in the desert, swapping out gun modules, and taking flight on some janky wings made of light were definitely the highlights for me. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm - I got into this game during the latter period of Wrath of the Lich King but I didn’t feel like an official WoW player until this fiery, grim expansion. It was the first real online game I’d ever played (if you don’t count Neopets and Adventure Quest) that I started as a Night Elf Warrior in a PVP server and ended as a Worgen Hunter in a non-PVP server. Because fuck the Horde, that’s why. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - I got Skyrim on a whim because I literally couldn’t think of anything else I wanted for Christmas in 2011. There was no hype for me, I knew nothing ‘bout no Dragonborns, but I thought “heck it” and dove in anyway. After originally playing it on Xbox 360 and replaying it more recently on PS4 (with a slew of mods) I can say with confidence this game continues to blow me away. I always seem to find something new even though I feel like I know it like the back of my hand. I did get involved in The Elder Scrolls Online later on but Skyrim is still where it’s at. Soul Calibur V - I was first introduced to the tale of souls and swords (eternally retold, of course) through Soul Calibur II and only because you could play as Link on the Gamecube version. Fast-forward to 2012 and I was still on board with its story and cast of characters but its character creation was really what kept me hooked. Soul Calibur VI turned out to be a little disappointing but I definitely got the most out of its fifth installment and I’m guilty of having played for hours and hours on end. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward - What began as a free trial because I was bored turned into a years-long interest in yet another MMO. While the base game was okay it really picked up speed with Heavensward and I was hooked from that point onwards. After a certain point I caught myself not skipping cutscenes and discovered - oh hey - the story’s actually really good. Star Wars Battlefront - I loved this game when it came out on PS4 and used it often to get my insatiable Star Wars fix. Aerial combat was my downright favorite part of the game and I loved smoking some TIE Fighters in an X-Wing or in the Millennium Falcon. Its sequel Star Wars Battlefront II could’ve made this list but EA was being a real dirtbag about it and now I find it hard to look back on happy memories of it the same way. The 2015 game is thankfully unsullied by those sour elements, however, so I’d say its gotta be my favorite Star Wars game ever. Overwatch - This game came to me at a time when I only wanted to play games that had character creation. I was hesitant to get to know all the characters and lore but I’m overjoyed I did since they’re so rich in personality and fun details. Once I got the hang of characters like McCree, Soldier, Reinhardt, and Widowmaker I was absolutely sold and I still play it two years later. Sonic Mania - The delightful trailer for this game got me all riled up but I wouldn’t know just how great it was until I was playing it myself. I don’t think I could ever truly enjoy my previous favorite 2D Sonic games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD) ever again because this game just feels better than all of them combined. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I didn’t really grow up with the Legend of Zelda, only ever playing A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess, but I immediately knew I was going to enjoy this open world take on the series. Just the sheer freedom of what you could do and where you could go was enough to reel me in and its aesthetic still amazes me with how great of a mood it generates. Final Fantasy VII - I still remember going into a GameStop when I was in high school and naively attempting to buy a used copy of this game for the PS1. It was an “epic fail,” as I would’ve said at the time. But over a decade later I downloaded it on the PS4 and went to town, getting my full FF7 experience at long last and loving every minute of it. Very stoked for the remake; it’s probably my most anticipated game right now. Marvel’s Spider-Man - What a surefire hit this was. From the moment the first gameplay footage was out I knew this was going to be the must-have web-swinging, wall-crawling good time. I love that there are so many ways to play the same character and everyone can really embody their own version of Peter Parker. I’m also from New York City so seeing a digital rendition of Manhattan was a real treat (even though they changed uptown a lot and my old apartment doesn’t exist in the game). Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Nine of the other nineteen entries in this list feature a character who’s playable in this latest Smash game. I get that people like Melee for reasons and whatever but how can you not like SSBU, the game that has it all? I’m still riding the high of Banjo and Kazooie entering the fray and I absolutely cannot wait to see where things go from here. Never had more fun playing local multiplayer in my life. Red Dead Redemption II - Never cared for Grand Theft Auto and the first Red Dead Redemption was fun but damn, there’s nothing quite like its sequel. I’m still working my way through the story just because I’ve spent so much time out in the wide open world, taking my time and seeing the sights. I might be a city boy but I have a deep appreciation for the American West and if this game ain’t just the prettiest damn thing I ever did see... hoo-WEE! Top shelf.

S.IV - Ep. 4: The Indignation of War

----------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. NEW GUINNEA – Jungles – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

Caption: November 16th, 21XX. Moments Ago.

Commander Yammark flies in the skies high above Repliforce Guerilla HQ as he begins to notice Mechaniloid activity far ahead of him.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Alright, I'm getting close. So far it doesn’t look too bad. Just a few minor burns to patch up. That's okay…

As he flies closer, suddenly he notices that he is quickly descending without meaning to.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Hm? What's this??

His descent gets ever faster as he struggles to keep his body above the trees.

COMMANDER YAMMARK: Oh man.. My jetpack is malfunctioning! Have to brace for.. IMPACT!!!

Without panicking, Commander Yammark tries to focus on dodging the passing trees at his fast velocity.

All at once, he violently crashes against a large tree, which causes a giant explosion to erupt in the middle of the forest.

-pan far South of Commander Yammark’s location-

Near Web Spider’s gateway, X, Zero, Takuma and Zephyr all turn their attention to the violent explosion in the far distance, north of them.

X: Haww?

ZERO: What the-!?

ZEPHYR: What do you think? Suicide bomber??

Takuma looks hard at the fiery explosion by the trees in the distance.

TAKUMA: I dunno. I don’t think so. That area doesn’t seem to be occupied by Repliforce at all.

X: You two investigate. We have to talk to Web Spider.

ZEPHYR & TAKUMA: Yes sir!

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- INT. Guerilla Post – Secret Storage – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

Caption: NOW

ZERO: Hyyyyyuuuuhh!!!

Zero misses a saber slash to Web Spider, who swings away to the far wall and rebounds back in his direction with a swift drop-kick.

ZERO: Kaaaaugh!

Zero gets knocked down to the floor.

X charges up and takes a shot at his shoulder.

WEB SPIDER: /Grr! Take /that.

After taking a /hit, he /fires an electric web at X.

X jumps back as the web hits the floor and spreads directly below him.

ZERO: (concerned) X!!

X gasps as he nearly falls into the web, but then a new instinct kicks in like a reflex within his upgraded boots. Two thrusters ignite, causing him to temporarily hover in mid-air and evade his way to safety.

ZERO: Huh?

WEB SPIDER: WHAT!?

ZERO: Nevermind!! /Hyah!!

Zero slashes at Web Spider's side.

WEB SPIDER: Gyaaah!

He immediately retreats to the trees above with a web that shoots out of his back.

As he gets to cover, X takes a charged shot at a 45 degree angle. When it hits Web Spider, he is knocked out of the tree and back down to the ground hard.

X: Give it up, Web Spider. We have you surrounded.

WEB SPIDER: (panting) Never!!!

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. NEW GUINNEA – Crash Site - DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

Zephyr and Takuma run and dash, quickly amongst the brush until they finally spot the dead Reploid by a broken, blackened tree.

TAKUMA: (gasping) Over there!

They both hop over and look at his scattered pieces carefully.

ZEPHYR: What the.. Who Is this!?

TAKUMA: I have no idea. No Mechaniloids in the area either, just like I thought…

ZEPHYR:

So you think this guy just.. had an accident?

TAKUMA:

..I guess so…

ZEPHYR:

Huh.. That’s really strange. A random guy flies in the middle of a warzone, and he's not even a suicide bomber?

TAKUMA:

Gee… what should we do?

ZEPHYR:

I guess we should snap some pictures and send them to the 14th Unit. Let the Special Investigations Department handle this…

TAKUMA:

Good idea.

----------------------------------------------------------------- INT. GUERILLA POST – Secret Storage – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

Web Spider looks at the two Maverick Hunters in disgust.

WEB SPIDER: I am not the enemy here.. You are!

X: No Spidus, that’s what I've been saying. We don’t have to be enemies!!

WEB SPIDER: NO!!

He shouts so loud it causes X and Zero to flinch.

WEB SPIDER: When I left the Maverick Hunters, it was because of that Maverick, standing right next to you.

X: (irate, losing patience) For the last time, HE’S NOT A MAVERICK!!!!

Zero looks away with closed eyes.

WEB SPIDER: BWAHAHAHAHH… Keep telling yourself that.

He sets off a web again and hangs just a few inches from the ground by a tree branch.

Suddenly X receives a com-link from Zephyr

ZEPHYR: (o.s, filtered) Commander. Our “bomber” is a John Doe. We've taken pictures of the body and sent them to the SIU.

X: Okay.. Fall back. I'll see you at HQ.

Web Spider points to Zero as he lightly swings back and forth.

WEB SPIDER: You nearly killed my best friends from the Hunter ranks! How any of them forgave you is beyond me…

ZERO: Hmph. First of all, I took an unexpected 'leave of absence' four years ago… And, when I came back from that 'leave'.. it met with some complications.

WEB SPIDER: In other words you became a Maverick! Just admit it!!

X: Mind Control is more like it, but who's counting…

ZERO: …You didn’t understand my condition back then, so /Why should I bother explaining it Now!?

At the dash, Zero holds his saber in an underhand position and raises his arm above his shoulder, ready to strike.

WEB SPIDER: Your return divided the Hunters! None of us trusted you!! The smart ones left to find their own way. The rest stayed out of fear for what you might do next, had they not been in your sight.

X: Back off Spider…

X aims his buster and charges up.

ZERO: (smirking, grinning) Keeping their enemy closer, huh? Hahaha. Hahaha!!!

WEB SPIDER: WHAT? What’s so funny?

ZERO: I'm laughing because you have no idea what you’re talking about! HaHaHaHa!!!!

WEB SPIDER: Why you-

Zero cuts him off with a quick spinning air-dash strike.

ZERO: //Kyah! /Hah!!

His saber /slashes against his side in a spiraling twirl, /twice. When Zero lands on his feet, he turns his hilt upright and takes a large vertical swing with two hands.

WEB SPIDER: Gya-aah Aaaggghhhh!!!

He quickly retaliates with a lightning web that catches Zero and begins to electrocute him.

ZERO: /Awh. /Aaaahh.

X: /NO!! You’re wrong about Zero!

He /fires a charge shot at Web Spider, who gets knocked down to the ground from the blast.

WEB SPIDER: Agh!! That’s it.

He shoots a web back up to the trees to catch his bearings. At the dashes, X /fires off quick rounds of level 2 and three shots.

X: His programming was /tampered with. He fought /hard to /get himself back. And in the end, his real friends under/stood that!

All three of his charged shots miss Web Spider, who is hiding amongst the brush of the trees. X takes this moment to help Zero out of his electric web and gets /electrocuted in the process.

X: /Gah.

ZERO: Thanks. (calling out) And not for nothing, but all those friends of yours who left turned out to be Mavericks in the end after all. What makes you any different…?

X: (calling out) Gravity Beetle, Blast Hornet… Just about all of them!

WEB SPIDER: Fools//…!!

Web Spider drops down to the center of the room and //dropkicks both of them to the ground.

X & ZERO: /Koough.

WEB SPIDER: I don’t care about the past any more. The difference lies in the fact that I am with Repliforce now. We are the future.

He creates a huge lightning web, which he latches onto. Then he points to the cannon behind him.

WEB SPIDER: And with that cannon, I'll ensure that the Maverick Hunters NEVER EXIST!!! Ahahaha!!!

At the dash, Zero and X slowly /get up.

ZERO: /Aagh.. That’s exactly what we were worried about. And that is why you can no longer exist… No matter the consequences…

X grimaces at the thought.

WEB SPIDER: Mmmm.. Enough of this. It’s time for my morning feast.

He shoots out four spider babies from his back, and then four more. They all crawl towards X and Zero.

X & ZERO: (skeeved out) Wuaah.

WEB SPIDER: Come, my Children! Feed upon your prey and bring the remains to me!!

They back up as they fight them off with swats, kicks, blasts and swings.

WEB SPIDER: Hah!

He fires two electric webs. One catches X, while Zero manages to dodge the other.

Zero dashes around and jumps after Web Spider, cutting him with a big slash.

Web Spider retaliates with a lightning web which catches Zero at close range as well.

ZERO: Awh!

Without warning, a charge shot catches Web Spider in the side of the head. X continues to blast him with level one shots. He also takes aim at Zero's web from afar and manages to free him with well-aimed pellet shots.

When Zero is freed, he falls down a short distance and lands on his feet.

WEB SPIDER: Nooo!!!

He grabs Zero from the back of the head and shoves him down to the ground, face first.

X: Ah!! Zero!!!

WEB SPIDER: Hahahahahaaa! You two are finished.

Without warning, suddenly Web Spider is engulfed in blue plasma.

WEB SPIDER: WHAAAAAAAA!!!!

Just below him, Zero sits with a knee to the floor and his fist planted in the ground. His body, shrouded in an aura of blue plasma.

ZERO: Actually Spider… We're JUST GETTING STARTED!!! /Hrreh!!

He gets up and stylishly /uppercuts him with a saber as the plasma aura around his body fades away.

The blade of the saber cuts directly into Web Spider's sternum as his inner core becomes exposed.

ZERO: Now X!

-pan to the right-

X is floating in mid-air from his new boot thrusters, fully charged up with his buster out. Without hesitation, he takes a Charge Shot.

-camera follows the blast directly as it collides with Web Spider's core-

WEB SPIDER: GyyyuYAAAAAHHHHGGggghhhh

His armor breaks apart as his inner core ruptures and wildly explodes.

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- REPLIFORCE HQ – Command Center – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

General sits in his chair and monitors all Repliforce activity. He does a double take when he notices the last red dot from the Guerilla Unit fade away.

GENERAL: What the!? The Guerilla Unit has been completely taken off the map.

Colonel gasps and turns around to his Commander.

COLONEL: (gasping) They’ve been destroyed! Are you sure?

GENERAL: The morning news broadcasted that the Maverick Hunters were planning on visiting our Guerilla Camp today. It looks like they’ve made their choice.

COLONEL: Hmph. Fine. Then we shall make ours.

GENERAL: Yes. Give the order Colonel. It’s time for our Navy to strike!

COLONEL: Yes sir!!

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN – Repliforce Naval Territory – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

Tidal Whale and Jet Stingray stand tall and proud on their battle ship amidst their fleet of King Poseidon clones. Suddenly they receive a com-link.

COLONEL: (o.s, filtered) Repli-Sea Force! Lieutenant Web Spider and his Guerilla Unit have been killed by the Maverick Hunters. Attack by any means necessary.

Tidal Whale shakes his head at this news in shock.

TIDAL WHALE: Wait, that can’t be…

JET STINGRAY: The Order has been given Captain! All Sea Forces ATTACK!!!

Jet Stingray dives off of the ship and takes flight as he rushes ahead. A swarm of King Poseidons power their speed boats and follow their eager Second in Command.

TIDAL WHALE: (v.o, thinking) I thought for sure they would have let up by now… This isn’t at all what I signed up for.

Tidal Whale witnesses Jet Stingray and their army of King Posiedons rush against swarms of Maverick Hunter battle boats. They inch closer to the Maverick Hunter Submarine in the far distance.

-pan inside the Submarine-

----------------------------------------------------------------- INT. MAVERICK HUNTER SUBMARINE – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

TYPHOON TETRA, BOLT BARRACUDA, JACK MACKEREL and ELECTRIC NEON of the 6th Maritime Unit all look at each other with slight trepidation as they collectively take a gulp and put a brave face on.

TYPHOON TETRA: Alright Men. This is it.

BOLT BARRACUDA: We all saw this coming.

JACK MACKEREL: LET’S GET OUT THERE AND GIVE THEM HEEEELLLL!!!!!

-pan out of the Submarine-

----------------------------------------------------------------- EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN – Underwater/Sea level – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

Under water, we see the gigantic Submarine fire missiles upon the fleet as Jack Mackerel and Electric Neon peer out from the top hatch first.

ELECTRIC NEON: We’ll go in first and save our biggest guns as a last resort.

JACK MACKEREL: (smiling, eager) Yeah, yeah!

The two swiftly swim after the oncoming King Poseidons and take several of them head on without a problem.

Then, Jet Stingray barrels through in the near-distance. He scowls at them and fires two ground hunters, which pin them down into the sea upon contact.

MARITIME HUNTER 1: Noo! I won’t let you-

One of many Maritime Hunter recruits jump after Jet Stingray, only to be batted away by his impressive forearm.

JET STINGRAY: Be gone, pest…

He falls into the Ocean.

JET STINGRAY: Hehehe. HAHAHAH!!!!

Jet Stingray fires more ground hunters at the surrounding Maritime Fleet around him. As well as Jack Mackerel and Electric Neon when attempt to attack from out of the sea.

-pan back to Tidal Whale who does not move a muscle-

TIDAL WHALE: (v.o, thinking) No… This isn’t us… We’re supposed to be protecting the World by eliminating Mavericks. Not warring amongst ourselves. I never thought their silly squabble would amount to something as serious as this!

-pan to Jet Stingray-

All of the Maritime Maverick Hunters ships have been destroyed except for the giant Maritime Submarine.

Bolt Barracuda and Typhoon Tetra both bravely exit the top hatch and put their fists up, ready for battle.

TIDAL WHALE: (o.s, v.o, thinking) We’re killing each other over nothin’!

BOLT BARRACUDA: This is IT, bud. You ready for THIS!??

TYPHOON TETRA: Only one way to FIND OUT!!!

The two bravely charge after Jet Stingray, who easily overtakes them and tackles them both in mid-air. He fires his ground hunters at close range, uses his wind-buster to pull them into him and lands strong punches and kicks on both of them causing each to reel in pain.

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- MAVERICK HUNTER BASE – Control Room – DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

X and Zero teleport in from their successful mission only to find a worried Captain, Double and Iris.

CAPTAIN: Boys, come and take a look at this.

X: Hm?

He puts Web Spider’s weapon chip away in his compartment belt as he walks over to the control console with Zero.

ZERO: What’s going on?

IRIS: Your Maritime Unit…

DOUBLE: (in awe) It’s getting… destroyed!

ZERO: WHAT!?

X immediately feels choked up in his throat. He hangs his head low and lets out a grim sigh.

CAPTAIN: I knew this was coming… This is by far, the hardest War we’ve ever faced.

He grips his Control Chair so hard, his fingers make imprints on the arm rests. That’s when the last 2 dots of the Maritime Unit fade away from his Halogen Screen.

CAPTAIN: That’s it.. Damn, DAMN!!

ZERO: NOOO!!!!! I KNEW We should’ve gone after them first. I KNEW IT!!! This is /YOUR FAULT, X!!!!

He angrily /points to X before he turns around and heads for the door.

IRIS: (crying) Nooo, Zero! That would’ve only gotten you kiiilled!!!

ZERO: HMPH!!! …I don’t think so…

X’s hurt face quickly tightens up into a scowl as he folds his arms. He looks down at Zero from the raised pedestal.

X: (annoyed, disapproval) I’m sorry… And what part of preventing a huge Death Cannon from firing at us seemed less important to you??

ZERO: Is that Derision I hear in your voice, X!? It doesn’t suit you!!!

X: Yeah, well ya know what? I don’t like your Tone either, Zero!! You’re not the only one who’s hurting here.

ZERO: Well, it seems like I’m the only one who cares!!

X is so shocked he shakes his head and needs to recompose himself before speaking.

X: (calmer) …Are you, kidding me…? Those are our Friends out there… And it’s Killing me that we have to go to War with them. Let alone the fact the people who are Supposed to be our friends have either betrayed us or already decided that we’re the enemy.

Zero turns his head and looks away with a grimace on his face.

X: …You always talk about how I let my emotions get the best of me. How I need to distance myself from getting distracted in the field, because I’m too upset. …Well now I’m going to reflect that mirror back upon you and suggest that you do the same.

Zero grits his teeth and gets annoyed at this.

ZERO: Hrrr-agh.. Don’t.. use my words against me.

X: I’m not saying Anything against you! That’s where you’re misunderstanding me. I’m trying to Help you.

ZERO: I don’t WANT your Help!!

He runs toward the door, irate.

X: COOL OFF, Zero! This is getting us nowhere!!

ZERO: Just STAY AWAY FROM ME!!!

He runs out of the room.

-pan across the corridor as he runs on-

ZERO: (v.o, thinking) I’ll do this My way. On My terms…

-pan back to the Control Room-

X, Double, Captain and Iris all look at each other, surprised. X’s gestures are mixed with annoyance and disappointment, however.

DOUBLE: …Wow! Is that guy always like that?

Double breaks the silence.

X: Not really..

CAPTAIN: It depends on his mood.

Iris slightly frowns at this and looks away.

DOUBLE: Do me a favor and Please do not assign me with him!

X: Hahaha. No need to worry, Kid. You’re with me.

DOUBLE: Pheeeew. Maaan! Thank you!!

Captain and Iris lightly chuckle at Double’s jovial and clownish nature.

X: (smiling) No problem, bud. Speaking of which, I should introduce you to the rest of the gang. We need to put you to work.

X begins to lead Double out of the room.

DOUBLE: Oh yeah?

X: Yeah. I want you guys to keep an eye on that bug in the Mother Computer, or whatever…

DOUBLE: Ahh, yes.

When they leave the room, Captain looks at the forlorn Iris.

CAPTAIN: Hey, Iris.

IRIS: Yes, sir?

CAPTAIN: Go ahead and take the rest of the day.

IRIS: (gasping, surprised) Really??

CAPTAIN: Yeah. This isn’t going to get better any time soon.. with or without your assistance. You don’t need to monitor it with me and be any more miserable. Go ahead and take a nice, long break. Come back whenever you want!

He smiles at her.

IRIS: Oh, /thank you sir! /Thank you!!

She /salutes and gratefully /bows with her hands held together.

CAPTAIN: Just.. whatever you do, please talk to Zero and see how he’s doing for me, okay?

IRIS: Uh, okay..

CAPTAIN: I don’t need him doing anything, wreckless and stupid, now… Hahah!

IRIS: Eheheh…

Iris is not amused at this at all. But she feigns a polite laugh anyway.

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- MAVERICK HUNTER BASE – Training Room - DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

BARYON and SCORCHE stand by their newly transferred ‘recruits’, Frenzy Foxkit and Freeze Alopex as Recon Raccoon gives them all a grim look. Their training session has been cut short by some very unexpected news.

RECON RACCOON: …and that’s what happened.

SCORCHE: Oh my God!! Cross-Hare and Leap Frog are Gone for Good!?? You mean, we can’t even pull together some sort of fusion, like we did for me?

BARYON: Or me??

RECON RACCOON: They’re long gone… I don’t know what to do. I’m sorry guys… /I know you were excited about comin’ into this…

He /gestures towards the familiar transfers.

FRENZY FOXKIT: Are you kidding me? This is probably the Best time for us to come in.

FREEZE ALOPEX: FRANK!!!

She slaps her brother in the back of the head.

FRENZY FOXKIT: /Agh! I didn’t mean it like that. But… you know what I mean! …don’tcha?

The rest of the 9th Unit give Frenzy Foxkit such a dirty stare, it causes him to actually perspire beads of sweat across his brow.

BARYON: You are very lucky that you are a skilled warrior. And that we need people. Otherwise you and your sister would not make the cut.

FREEZE ALOPEX: Hmph! Like we need you!!

FRENZY FOXKIT: Ah come on, Sis. We’d fit in best here. Lets just write the whole thing off as a misunderstanding, okay?

RECON RACCOON: Hmph. The last thing we need is any more misunderstandings. …What happened with your old Unit anyway?

FREEZE ALOPEX: You mean, besides our Leader betraying us?? Well… the rest of them were so damn rude, that I had to go - For my own dignity.

FRENZY FOXKIT: I… I really trusted Dragoon. So when word got out that he betrayed us, I knew we wouldn’t be coming back. Turian’s gang is cool and all, but they’re definitely their own thing. And I really don’t want to be ordered around by him.

RECON RACCOON: That’s fair enough. Now, Alopex, you’re an Arctic Fox. Why not join the 13th Polar Battalion, just out of curiosity?

FREEZE ALOPEX: That cliquey pack of Wolves? No thank you…

SCORCHE: Hahahaha, she’s cool. I like her.

FREEZE ALOPEX: That’s nice…

She shoots him a dirty look, not wanting to be objectified by anyone.

RECON RACCOON: Hmph. Well, liking each other isn’t gonna be enough. We need to re-establish Team Dynamics and Strengths again!! URGH! I Hate figuring out who is going to Lead!!!

FRENZY FOXKIT: Well clearly, not us.

RECON RACCOON: Hah! Clearly…

SCORCHE: I’m good…

BARYON: …Do you want to lead?

RECON RACCOON: (shocked) Wha-? R-Really!!

BARYON: …I’m still relatively new to the group. And while I provide sufficient muscle and firepower to the cause, perhaps it is best to leave tactical operations to more of a Veteran, like yourself.

RECON RACCOON: What the… You Mean It!!?? Is this really Happening???

SCORCHE: Hahahaha!!! Looks like you got it, Furball. You’ve been Grandfathered in. There’s no one left to shut you down. Hahaha!!

He pats his new leader on the back.

RECON RACCOON: Oh MAN! This is gonna be great!!!

Frenzy Foxkit smiles.

FRENZY FOXKIT: (v.o, thinking) Hmm, this is way better. I think I’m gonna like this Team a lot.

Freeze Alopex smiles, until she thinks about the old team for a quick moment.

FREEZE ALOPEX: (v.o thinking) …I wonder how the others are doing.

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- INT. VOLCANO – Lava Pit - DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

A bruised and battered Blaze struggles to crawl amidst the hot gravel floor, while she passes by her offline sister, Blizzard and her broken best friend, Turian.

Tethlon’s body is thrown right next to Blaze. Her eyes widen as she sees the huge hole, burned through his chest plate.

MAGMA DRAGOON: Hahahahah!!! Foolish Hunters!!! You never should have faced me!

Blaze struggles to get up, but manages to make it to her feet. Instead of putting her dukes up for the 10th time, she puts up a hand with her palm up, signaling for him to stop. She is begging and pleading at this point.

BLAZE: M-magmard… Please… We were wrong… You can fight X and Zero all you want… Just… Please! …Don’t kill us!

He scowls at her for a short moment, then bellows in rich laughter.

MAGMA DRAGOON:

Bwaaaahahahahahh!!!!! I always knew there was something about you that I liked, Blaze. You were my favorite. You really were!

Blaze looks up at her former leader, and manages to crack a hopeful smile from her cracked face.

BLAZE: Heh..

Magma Dragoon gives her a swift spinning kick into her stomach. She is flung directly into the wreckage of her teammates as she rolls over, multiple times before finally coming to a stop. She is so winded from the kick that she is heaving right next to Turian’s broken frame.

MAGMA DRAGOON: You pathetic little girl… You wouldn’t even make a good Maverick…

He blasts a fireball at her, which knocks her further across the terrain towards Tethlon’s body.

She managed to carry Tethlon’s torso with him.

BLAZE: (coughing, hurting) Agh-aaaa. Daaamn, Dragoon. You know thisss’ll go on ffforever-r-ugh. J- just grab me by the core and kill me already!

MAGMA DRAGOON: Hah. Never!

He runs over to her.

MAGMA DRAGOON: This is too fun!!

He dives after her with another deadly flame kick.

BLAZE: Aaaaaiiiiii!!!!!!

-cut to-

----------------------------------------------------------------- MAVERICK HUNTER BASE – R & D Lab - DAY -----------------------------------------------------------------

X sits at the Mother Computer with Double, Zephyr, XANTHE, JUNO, AESON, POLLUX, CASTOR and ALECTO by his side.

X: Well, now that we’ve all gotten acquainted, we might as well see what’s going on inside this thing, huh?

X hovers his hand over the track pad, which wakes up the screen. Then, he clicks on the icon shortcut to look inside the computer. He doesn’t do it often, because it always reminds him of MIDDY and his ultimate sacrifice to save Cyber Space that one time.

X sighs as the program loads up.

XANTHE: Uh, sir. I beg your pardon, but do you really need all of us to do this?

X: (smiling) Hm… Maybe not, but don’t you want to keep our new recruit company?

Xanthe can do nothing but gawk at the pudgy little reploid.

XANTHE: ..Not really. No…

X: (smiling) Aw come on. Don’t be like that. It might not seem exciting now, but this might be one of the most important missions we do, today.

AESON: (surprised) No waay!

JUNO: Really??

X: Oh yeah. You guys weren’t around for it the last time our Mother Computer was infected, but it caused all sorts of catastrophies. All over the World even! Don’t ask me how that worked.

ALECTO: Yeah guys. It was really crazy. Honesty, I don’t know how we got out of it.

CASTOR: Well it was all thanks to our Fearless Leader! When it came down to it, he was really the one who saved the day.

X: (happy, pleased) Aw shucks, guys.

ZEPHYR: Wow. I had no idea.

POLLUX: Well… I mean, X was the only one who could interface with it at the time, so.. none of us had a chance to exactly, get in there.

XANTHE: Wait a minute. What??

X: Nevermind that, I don’t see anything in here. It’s clean!

They all look at the current state of their Inner Mainframe, and everything checks out.

DOUBLE: Hmmm. Interesting.. Well, that’s good news! No?

JUNO: I.. guess?

X: Whoever is trying to hack us isn’t doing a very good job. Thats why I think you should monitor this thing for me, Double. Maybe you’ll spot something that we don’t have time to look at.

ZEPHYR: At least give the rest of us something else to do, other than Computer Duty. Come on, there’s so many Repliforce soldiers out there who need-

X: No. We are the Elites! We are above this petty squabble against the Repliforce!! We have to be the Example, not the problem.

ZEPHYR: What…?

XANTHE: But you just attacked-

X: That was wrong…. I aided Zero in taking down Web Spider, because he was becoming too dangerous. We had a grudge to settle, so I finished it. That was foolish…

DOUBLE: No it wasn’t, my Liege. You took down the enemy. That’s part of the job, Isn’t it?

X: …Our job is to protect the innocent. And to stop the Mavericks! Somehow everyone seems to have forgotten that.

XANTHE: With all due respect, sir.. What if we have to protect ourselves?

X shoots him a dirty look, and then looks back at the computer as he closes out of the program.

X: I don’t know… I guess we’ll deal with that as we need to.

He stares at the monitor, annoyed as he opens up their mission dossier. Web Spider’s mugshot has become black and white, but the rest are still glaring at him, taunting him to take the initiative and do battle once again.

ALECTO: Um. So now what, sir?

X: You guys train with Double. Get him up to speed…. I need to investigate this lead.

On screen, he hovers an arrow over to Split Mushroom’s mugshot.

POLLUX: Hmph…

CASTOR: This is stupid.

X: Ya know what? I didn’t ask for your opinion, now did I?

ZEPHYR: But sir, Zero has already left with his Unit to take out the Supply Train!

X gasps.

X: Really?

ZEPHYR: Yeah.. And you have us just sitting here, like ducks.

X clicks on Slash Beast’s mugshot. He finds that Zero has joined the 5th Police Squadron on this mission.

X: (v.o, thinking, intrigued and annoyed) Huh… So he’s going about his own agenda now. Idiot.. Why doesn’t he see that this will only make matters worse?

ZEPHYR: Sir?

X snaps out of it and acknowledges his team.

X: Look… I need to rest and gather my strength, before I go back out there again. So, I really meant what I said when I told you guys to train Double.

XANTHE: Ah, come on man!

POLLUX: This sucks…

They all leave the room in protest, as Double looks at X, embarrassed.

DOUBLE: (frowning) …Please don’t make me train with them, sir..

X studies his recruit with soft eyes, then lets out a sigh.

X: I’m sorry they’re acting this way. …It’s not a reflection on you. They’re just frustrated at me for not letting them go out into battle, yet.

DOUBLE: My liege, may I ask why you’re so opposed to fighting the Repliforce?

X: If I’m honest, it’s not even the Repliforce. It’s all fighting in general. I’m not into it, kid. I’m just really good at it.

DOUBLE: (Interested) Reeeally!?

X: I guess… One thing lead to another. And eventually, Sigma forced my hand. I was inspired to protect my friends and humanity from ever being harmed again. But then… most of my friends died in the wars we’ve lead. …by my hand…

Double blinks, completely surprised.

X: They became Mavericks, you see… and I was forced to…

X holds a tear back and takes a deep breath.

X: Well, anyway. There’s nothing going on in Cyberspace right now… So you should go ahead and train with the guys for a couple of hours. It’ll be good for you.

Double gives his mentor an inquisitive look. Then he smiles and offers a shrug.

DOUBLE: Well, if you insist.. Just make sure you let me know when you’re leaving. I’d like to… monitor your mission from here, if I may.

X smiles.

X: Sure! I’ll let you be my Navigator. Thanks, bud.

X shakes his hand. Double offers a warm smile in return.

NARRATOR: (v.o) As another War begins to unfold, X finds an unexpected comfort in making a new friend out of his new protégé, Double. While his best friend seems to have a Warpath of his own, that he is more than ready to follow. The Repliforce have lost their Guerilla Unit, and exchanged losses by taking the Maverick Hunter’s Maritime Unit. What Faction will come out on top? Who is really the Maverick in this situation? And is X on to something about the mysterious reploid known as Split Mushroom? I look forward to updating my next entry.

The Buy Pile: Bad People & Bad Decisions Make For Good Comics

WHAT IS THE BUY PILE?

Every week Hannibal Tabu (winner of the 2012 Top Cow Talent Hunt/blogger/novelist/poet/jackass on Twitter/head honcho of Komplicated) grabs a whole lotta comics. These periodicals are quickly sorted (how) into two piles — the “buy” pile (a small pile most weeks, comprised of planned purchases) and the “read” pile (often huge, often including comics that are really crappy but have some value to stay abreast of). Thursday afternoons you’ll be able to get his thoughts (and they’re just the opinions of one guy, so calm down, and here’s some common definitions used in the column) about all of that … which goes something like this …

THE BUY PILE FOR JANUARY 18, 2017

Curse Words #1 (Image Comics)

Jump from the Read Pile. The lure of leisure time and scantily clad romantic partners have felled conquerors of many stripes, from the Zentraedi in “Robotech” to … well, the Invid in “Robotech.” In this crafty new book, an imperialist’s minion gets a change of heart when he experiences New York City. That part is very engaging, and when the bill inevitably comes due that leads to some solid action and the truth needing protection in an extreme fashion. Charles Soule, Ryan Browne, Jordan Boyd, Michael Parkinson, Chris Crank and Shawn DePasquale turned in one entertaining work and watching this struggle between demons and slightly better angels is a great start.

“Grand Passion” #3 breaks all the rules and loves every minute of it.

Grand Passion #3 (Dynamite Entertainment)

Jump from the Read Pile. Not at all safe for work, this twisted gunpoint love story has everything you need to get engaged in the characters and resolve the plot in this issue while pushing you towards the next one. Spoilers would abound with discussing the details, but James Robinson, Tom Feister, Dave Curiel and Simon Bowland deliver a bawdy, enjoyable romp.

WHAT’S THE PROGNOSIS?

New ideas getting their game face together? Gotta love that, especially with so much cool new stuff happening.

THIS WEEK’S READ PILE

Honorable Mentions: Stuff worth noting, even if it’s not good enough to buy

Answers start to come in “Mosaic” #4 with the help of a brain significantly better than the series’ protagonist. There’s a real holodeck feel to it, as a lot of nothing happened just to transfer some information and do a bit of character work. That dragged the plot, which wasn’t so good, but the building of Morris Sackett as a character is fantastic.

Maximus the Mad is like a bored frat boy Loki in “Uncanny Inhumans” #18 where he comes up with a plan that only involves a little bit of murder and mayhem but he figures will be wholly forgiven. Hanging out with two of the worst Inhuman villains aside from himself, this has the feeling of a good crime comedy but hits the brakes sometime during the second act, leaving things unresolved. An improvement with the focus on character, but not enough to make it home.

“WWE” #1 was interestingly written, presenting the story behind the story as a story, reframing actual events in wrestling … “history,” we can call it. In any case, this behind the scenes look plays out as if the characters on the screen are the same when the cameras are off, carrying the scripted nature of the stories to a whole new level. On one hand, that’s brilliant and amazing, especially with the Seth Rollins characterization. On another hand, many of the shirtless characters herein were difficult to distinguish from each other, and that made the story seem to go by in a blur at points.

“Captain America Sam Wilson” #18 took a long time to make what seems like an obvious decision (as stated by almost everybody who matters in these pages), which made its titular character terrible even in the eyes of many people closest to him. It also had a strategy from a young hero that bordered on stupidity, so that was a problem. What was good was Steve Rogers, dancing around double entendres so much that Ben Kenobi might pause and then applaud respectfully. The ideas are better than the execution, and if this issue is right that the cause matters more than the consequences, that’s something to like.

Just when “Star Wars Doctor Aphra” #3 was getting good, after some character development (including her full name) and finding out just how dangerous a single Wookiee can be, when the page count caught up to it, cutting the story off at the climax of a second act. Written as trade bait? Maybe. This was close to making the mark, though, as each cast member did some of what makes them awesome.

The “Meh” Pile Not good enough to praise, not bad enough to insult, they just kind of happened … “Harbinger Renegade” #3, “Aquaman” #15, “Revolutionaries” #1, “Trinity” #5, “Cage” #4, “Hook Jaw” #2, “Green Arrow” #15, “Squadron Supreme” #15, “Jeff Steinberg Champion Of Earth” #5, “Dollface” #1, “Lucifer” #14, “Spider-Gwen” #16, “Black Hammer Giant-Sized Annual” #1, “Venom” #3, “Superman” #15, “Deadpool And The Mercs For Money” #7, “Horizon” #7, “Ultimates 2” #3, “Justice League” #13, “Black Widow” #10, “Athena Voltaire And The Volcano Goddess” #3, “Suicide Squad Most Wanted El Diablo And Amanda Waller” #6, “Divinity III Aric Son Of The Revolution” #1, “Avengers” #3.1, “Raven” #5, “Unbelievable Gwenpool” #10, “Battlestar Galactica Gods And Monsters” #3, “Mighty Captain Marvel” #1, “Justice League Vs Suicide Squad” #5, “Gamora” #2, “Doctor Who The Ninth Doctor” #9, “Patsy Walker A.K.A. No, just … no … These comics? Not so much …

Since “Clone Conspiracy” #4 and “Amazing Spider-Man” #23 have so many of the same story elements, they may as well have the same review. Of course, trusting maniacs and murderers goes as it inevitably has to after pages and pages of moralistic hand wringing and prevarication. These books are so predictably doomed that when the other shoe finally drops, it’s almost a relief to know there’s just the punching and attempted murder to get through now. Subpar concept, adequate execution.

SO, HOW BAD WAS IT?

Not bad.

WINNERS AND LOSERS

Those jumps, though … let’s call this week a winner.

THE BUSINESS

Well, there are 22 pages of a new 72 page web comic on line, there’s another one coming next month while a third just got collected for sale, 44 pages of story for just three bucks through Black History Month. All that and asking the question who is David Chance? It was a big weekend at the Black Comix Arts Festival in San Francisco, and if you join the mailing list there’s free stuff in it for you, to boot!

The writer of this column isn’t just a jerk who spews his opinions — he writes stuff too. A lot. Like what? You can get “Project Wildfire: Enter Project Torrent” (a collected superhero web comic), “The Crown: Ascension” and “Faraway,” five bucks a piece, or spend a few more dollars and get “New Money” #1 from Canon Comics, the rambunctious tale of four multimillionaires running wild in Los Angeles, a story in “Watson and Holmes Volume 2” co-plotted by “2 Guns” creator Steven Grant, two books from Stranger Comics — “Waso: Will To Power” and the sequel “Waso: Gathering Wind” (the tale of a young man who had leadership thrust upon him after a tragedy), or “Fathom Sourcebook” #1, “Soulfire Sourcebook” #1, “Executive Assistant Iris Sourcebook” #1 and “Aspen Universe Sourcebook,” the official guides to those Aspen Comics franchises. Love these reviews? It’d be great if you picked up a copy. Hate these reviews? Find out what this guy thinks is so freakin’ great. There’s free sample chapters too, and all proceeds to towards the care and maintenance of his kids … oh, and to buy comic books, of course. There’s also a bunch of great stuff — fantasy, superhero stuff, magical realism and more — available from this writer on Amazon. What are you waiting for? Go buy a freakin’ book already!
