I don't like the PlayStation very much, though I can appreciate the objectively good things it brought to the industry.
One thing I really gotta hand to Sony, though?
They nailed the controller.
Check it.
This is a SNES controller:

Four face buttons, two let's call them system buttons, directional inputs, two shoulder buttons.
This is a Gravis PC GamePad (no way!)
Looks an awful lot like a SNES controller with the system and shoulder buttons removed, and very popular in its time.
This is a Philips CD-I controller:

That's literally a Gravis PC GamePad with a different plastic color are you fucking kidding me?!
This is a PlayStation 1 controller:

Take a SNES controller, double up the shoulder buttons and add some grips. That's it, you're done.
This is a Gravis PC GamePad Pro:

That's the forbidden love child of a SNES and a PlayStation. That looks like it could be a fucking Nintendo Play Station controller. Enough said.
So clearly, Nintendo had it Right with their SNES controller, when all Sony could do to improve on it was adding grips and more shoulder buttons.
And then the Sony devs got a horrible idea.
This... is the PlayStation 1 Dual Shock controller.

Dual for the twin analog sticks, shock for the force feedback motors hidden in the grips.
From then on, all PlayStation controllers would follow the same basic design (except for Move), and after an initial hiccup with the Duke, the Xbox series' controllers would take after it as well. Some would have the directional pad and left stick switch places but these controllers are all basically interchangeable!
Here's a Logitech F310 (I use one myself), Xbox Series X, Switch Pro, and PS5 controller.

In low visibility conditions, you wouldn't be able to tell these fuckers apart!
So basically?
The SNES controller was the beginning of the end.
The PS1 controller was the end of the end.
I might consider the PS1 to be an over-hyped at the time piece of garbage but god damn did they do the controller right.

Ranking my controllers via how easy it is to wrap the wire around itself (part 1)
(From worst to best)
Mega drive 3 button controller
The wire in theory wraps around the controller serviceably enough, but the wire feels really cheap and holds its shape after untangling. Feels like waking someone up after only 3 hours of sleep.

This shouldn't really count but what the heck, Topway PS1 multitap accessory
It wraps up awful, it's wire is thick and cheap which means it doesn't stay tight, holds it's shape when unwrapping and the chunkiness disallows it the ability to lie flat

Xbox "S" controller
This thing is quite chunky without really any satisfying curves for the wire to hold onto, causing them to sort of sprawl throughout the entire middle of the controller, they also often push down the stick too which makes me anxious it'll cause drift. Additionally, the need for the adapter like thing at the end of the controller and the size of the connecting piece itself causes lots of big lumps which make it very difficult to wrap on a way where it can be set down flat easily.

Xbox's "The duke"
The exact same issues as before but the controller is bigger and even less ergonomic, somehow however the extra chunk factor causes the extra lumps to be less impactful and I think the size somehow causes it to come out better when you tie it in the specific way I default to

Wii nunchuck
In theory, this would be fine. However, it has a really annoying flaw that boils my blood. When tieing it's difficult to tuck the connector anywhere which causes it to come just a little bit loose all the time, you could thread it but by the time you've made it to that point and realised you have to start over and do it all again with that in mind.

Sega Dreamcast keyboard
In theory it's fine but it's very big making wrapping it up feel precarious as you'll never get it very tight and the wire is at such a length where regardless which direction you tie it in, it'll never be fully tight and have the connector in a spot where you can set it flat. Only a minor annoyance but I'm feeling pedantic.

PS1 namco G-con
Despite having lots of wire, sits surprisingly flat, however the little extension of wire at the connector causes some slightly difficulties in getting a tight fit and the added lumpiness means prep is required for it to sit flat.

Sega Dreamcast arcade stick
This is getting into pretty okay territory here, this one wraps up pretty well however does have a little design flaw, the wire will be too thick to place it flat no matter what you do. Passable though.

Wii classic controller
It's fine, it's really small and has no thighs so the wire makes it rest in the least flat position possible but otherwise it's okay

Dualshock PSone controller
It's extremely standard, literally nothing of note. A nice baseline. (Ignore that this one is a little dirty, got it recently and haven't cleaned it yet)

Nintendo's buttons look like that because they're based off the SNES controller, which had that button placement because the NES's controller had an A button on the right side and a B button on the left.

Microsoft's controllers look like that because they're based off the Dreamcast's controller, since much of the original Xbox was based off the Dreamcast, which was based off the 6-button Genesis controller that had X, Y, and Z and A, B, and C buttons (as opposed to the original 3-button Genesis controller that only had A, B, and C buttons).
The original Xbox "Duke" actually had a white and black button that simulated the missing Z and C buttons from the 6-button Genesis.

The 6-button Genesis controller was designed for fighting games. X, Y, and Z were for low, medium, and high punched while A, B, and C were for low, medium, and high kicks like Capcom arcade machines would order the buttons for their fighting games. The functionality of the white and black buttons would eventually be turned into the left and right bumpers, so the missing Z and C buttons from the 6-button Genesis still exist in some capacity on modern controllers as bumpers (though 6-button fighting games tend to treat RB/R1 as Z and RT/R2 as C).

Hey guys. So there’s been an discount sale on Xbox Store this morning I’d dive in, but also where I’d came across with this one from via game pass before turning its subscription quickly. It was a long story though.
Though eventually this is where I’d brought for today is there’s an discount sale for ‘Injustice 2’ game I’d picked with. It’s that game for how good I’d played against all time heroes and villains from DC comics duke out each other. I should really know I’d happened to play the first one back at the program, but I’m supposed to be doing playing with my friends on Wii Sports like bowling like many times. I couldn’t help myself while holding the Wii U controller, but it was back then before learning my mistakes.
Anyways, I haven’t purchased til now after careful concentration; especially I’m into some fighting games like I got with “Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3”. However, I also got with its ultimate pack with all the DLC fighters in it; especially the ninja turtles that blown my mind since that announcement back in 2017. I mean it works for the Batman crossover movie adaptation, but I never watch it. 🤷♂️
It was a good thing I’d got savings into my account, but not enough to go back to my game pass subscription in the mean time. I’ll be careful if I were you.

Hi, Mystery! After watching the Knuckles show, I’m a little lost on what that whole “Flames of Disaster” business was about or what Iblis is because I never played ‘06 and don’t know much about it. Is the Flames of Disaster a special power that only Knuckles can do?
Hey Darlin’!❤️✨
Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Older Sonic titles are a bit hard to come by these days. I promise you that it’s not the end of the world if you haven’t played ‘06 yet. I’m terribly sorry for taking so long on this ask. Sonic ‘06 has a lot of details and I was trying to narrow down the important details.
I’m gonna plug THIS PLAY-THROUGH for you to watch if you’d like the story of the game, I’ll link AMAZON to the game if you’re interested in playing (PlayStation and XBox are available), and THIS BIO if you’d like to read more about it when you’ve got some leisure time!😁
In terms of video game canon, Iblis is the raw power from the result of the sun god Solaris, as well as the energy known for mass destruction. The entity was born from the “Solaris Project”; the goal was for the Duke of Soleanna and his team of scientists to harness and control time. The project went haywire and Iblis split. It formed himself and Mephilis the Dark. What remained of Iblis was sealed away in the Duke’s daughter. Iblis is a fierce and aggressive monster that was unleashed by the Duke’s daughter through her tears—which were caused by Sonic dying—and spread across the world.
As for SCU, it seems to be a monster that Knuckles fights and claims its power solely. Knuckles had to earn his power in order to be who he is today, unlike Sonic. It seems to be that in this continuation it’s an ability that Knuckles can master. The problem that many of us—and myself included—are having with this Easter egg is that we’re trying to figure out what Iblis is in this universe. Anything is quite possible with this version and its interpretation.
If we’re applying game-canon logic to Knuckles, then yeah! He’s more than likely cursed with the flames sealed inside of him like Princess Elise was. If not, then Sonic theorist are going to have a field day solving the fire monster’s role in this universe. Right now, we’re trying to figure out how and why this applies to SCU canon. It’s more than likely a power that our lovable warrior echidna can harness only. Unless, you know, this is debunked in the future. For now, it seems to be a mystical-like beast that Knuckles slayed to claim its power. The Flames of Disaster is an ability that he can control.
Although I will say that IF Sonic 4 is green-lit to go, then I think that our chances of seeing Silver and Blaze appear are pretty high.
#I’m Memphis Tennessee and I’m part lizard#knuckles series#knuckles show#mystery anon#off topic#Listen: games are hard to come by. Especially older ones. It’s not the end of the world if you can’t get a copy of a game I promise#You’re not going to be judged by me if you haven’t played them.

I really want to get into wargames and minis, but I realized that scale is kicking my ass, because it just doesn't "click" with me. How "small" is a 28mm miniature supposed to be? Stylization from different manufacturers aside, do I just literally take out a ruler and measure if it's 28 mm tall? That simple? I just want to kit bash and have fun. I also live in a place that could be called a "miniature wargames desert" but a few swap meets exists where I could get extremely cheap little toys. Also, I found you by looking at the Turnip28 tag and I'm really loving your stuff.
Admittedly it’s sometimes really hard to gauge that, both with miniature photography and on stores. I’ve bought miniatures from some obscure ranges and the scale is completely not what I expected at all.
However, to give a better sense of scale, here is some different mini ranges with some normal common day items that a tumblrina might have around;

A Warhammer 40,000 Skitarii, Noise Marine, and Sister of Battle next to a standard English crumpet (dated 2024, for shrinkflation purposes).

Forge World minis in front of a Windows 10 compatible original Xbox controller nicknamed “The Duke”

A pair of Gun Wizards made from Northstar Games’ Frostgrave kits, next to some anti-depressants I forgot to take and you possibly did too.

Necromunda miniatures next to another miniature, this one is a sculpt of one of Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis.

Age of Sigmar-sub game miniatures next to an omniscient floating piece of LEGO, a 2x2 specifically I do believe is the technical designation.

And finally some BadsquiddoGames minis next to an old science-fiction book nerds will insist is the best thing they read despite not actually reading any real books, bookmarked on page 152.
If these images do not help, then here is a video of a bunch of minis on an A4 piece of paper, with United Kingdom currency and some cheap dice scattered around;
As you see, they’re small. Most only standing 5 or 6cm in height. Bout an inch or so.

Chiaki's starting to get so big that her lardy fingers are starting to get too cumbersome to get a grip on controllers, let alone pressing buttons, even bigger controllers like the Wii U gamepad or the OG Xbox Duke aren't safe from this multiple button pressing fate...

Yeah, it was really good! Another one of the ones I really did like was the original xbox DUKE controller, and how it handled the 4 button layout. They are in a slanted diamond pattern that matches the angle of your thumb, and ones thumb sits neatly on top of all 4, allowing one to simply roll their thumb in any of the cardinal directions to press any given button. They had a nice positive action too so you knew when they were pressed. I was a big fan.
That said, gamecube really is GOOD, except for those triggers, those were weird, and that Z button, but that's neither here nor there.
gamecube was the best designed controller of all time exclusively for the button cluster that gave you easy thumb roll access to all buttons but also gave you the a button as a thumb rest (because it’s the one you press the most) and took into account the frequency with which each button gets pressed in its design rather than doing the stupid diamond design that gives no button priority and rests your thumb in the shitty blank space between buttons
