I don't like the PlayStation very much, though I can appreciate the objectively good things it brought to the industry.

One thing I really gotta hand to Sony, though?

They nailed the controller.

This is a SNES controller:

Four face buttons, two let's call them system buttons, directional inputs, two shoulder buttons.

This is a Gravis PC GamePad (no way!)

Looks an awful lot like a SNES controller with the system and shoulder buttons removed, and very popular in its time.

This is a Philips CD-I controller:

That's literally a Gravis PC GamePad with a different plastic color are you fucking kidding me?!

This is a PlayStation 1 controller:

Take a SNES controller, double up the shoulder buttons and add some grips. That's it, you're done.

This is a Gravis PC GamePad Pro:

That's the forbidden love child of a SNES and a PlayStation. That looks like it could be a fucking Nintendo Play Station controller. Enough said.

So clearly, Nintendo had it Right with their SNES controller, when all Sony could do to improve on it was adding grips and more shoulder buttons.

And then the Sony devs got a horrible idea.

This... is the PlayStation 1 Dual Shock controller.

Dual for the twin analog sticks, shock for the force feedback motors hidden in the grips.

From then on, all PlayStation controllers would follow the same basic design (except for Move), and after an initial hiccup with the Duke, the Xbox series' controllers would take after it as well. Some would have the directional pad and left stick switch places but these controllers are all basically interchangeable!

Here's a Logitech F310 (I use one myself), Xbox Series X, Switch Pro, and PS5 controller.

In low visibility conditions, you wouldn't be able to tell these fuckers apart!

So basically?

The SNES controller was the beginning of the end.

The PS1 controller was the end of the end.

I might consider the PS1 to be an over-hyped at the time piece of garbage but god damn did they do the controller right.

Did you know that there was an analog controller for the original Playstation before the Dual Shock? It's true! The Dual Analog Controller as it was called may not be the most exciting factoid out there, but we still think this little curiosity deserves some love.

The differences are at first glance not huge, however with further inspection you might notice the concave analog sticks, the shoulder button ridges as well as the elongated grip. I actually prefer these longer grips a bit more, so it's too bad they didn't stick with them as they moved over to the Dual Shock.

A more hidden difference is the flight stick mode indicated by a green LED. This mode simply emulates Sony's Analog Joystick controller, which was a pretty bulky dual flight stick device mainly used for flying and racing games. It's pretty cool too, hopefully we can get our hands on one in the future and show you.

The Dual Analog Controller doesn't have a rumble feature in Europe and America, while the Japanese one had a single motor attached within. Supposedly the motor could malfunction and fry your entire system or something, but we can't confirm or deny this – so take it as a funky rumour.

It is not hard to see why the Dual Analog Controller fell into obscurity though. It was only available for about a year before the much more common Dual Shock controller was introduced. It was overshadowed by its fancier new brother and quickly forgotten. But we remember, and now you do too! And that's lovely.
