Goodbye, Don Glees! (2022, dir. Atsuko Ishizuka) - review by Rookie-Critic

Goodbye, Don Glees! really sneaked up on me. As you can probably tell, I've kind of made it a habit over the past year to go see anything and everything that even kind of interests me. So, when I saw ads for the very limited Fathom Events showing of this unassuming anime film, I just decided to go for it. No trailer, no plot synopsis, just a poster and a title, and I am so glad I did. Goodbye, Don Glees! follows three friends (Roma, Toto, and Drop, three incredibly anime names) during their first summer as high schoolers. Through a few different misadventures, they find themselves trekking off into the deep woods surrounding their rural Japanese hometown to find a drone that flew way off course. Now, a drone isn't a dead body, and there are only three of them, but you can tell this film is heavily inspired by Stand by Me and other childhood adventure films of that time period, and it wears those inspirations well. The first half of the film is entertaining and fun, and sets up its trio of protagonists slowly. Letting their interactions do the talking, and allowing the interpersonal relationships between all three kids to build up their characters and backstories naturally and evenly.

There is a fairly predictable plot point in the movie that seems like something that normally would have been kept more secret until the third act of any other movie, but by the time all the puzzle pieces start to slide into place you hardly care about how predictable or unsurprising anything is because you realize that isn't really important. The point was never the reveal, but what that specific thing means to the character it's pertinent to, and how that in turn affects his companions. This film is emotionally vulnerable, and finds ways to tug at your heartstrings in the third act that, while you may have seen coming, still hit you like a freight train when the needle finally drops, and I will admit to crying a good amount in the film's final moments. I feel a little bad devoting so little text to this review while my review for a film like Clerks III reads like a research paper, but I had a lot of different and complicated thoughts on Clerks. That's not to say that Goodbye, Don Glees! isn't a film worthy of deep critical analysis, but the thing is this; falling in love with Goodbye, Don Glees! was easy. The humor worked, the emotional parts worked, the characters worked, everything about this film simply just worked. It's an amazingly moving film that currently sits as my favorite animated film of 2022, and it has set the bar pretty damn high.

Speed-o'-Sound Sonic

The inhumanly quick ninja known as Speed-o'-Sound Sonic (or often times just Sonic or Sonikku) is a graduate of the 44th Class of the Ninja Village.  Trained from birth in the martial arts of ninjutsu, Sonic purposefully held back so that his instructors would be extra hard on him and subject him to more intensive training.  While he was viewed as the village’s worst student, all of the extra work and grueling punishments actually enabled him to attain an unparalleled level of skill.  He honed himself to such a degree that he could move at the speed of sound, with his actions all but invisible to the naked eye.  This coupled with his prowess with swords, shurikens and various forms of karate have made him a near peerless warrior.     

After leaving the Ninja Village, Sonic hired himself out as a high priced body guard and assassin.  On one assignment, Sonic foiled an assassination attempt by the villainous Hammerhead and his Paradisers.  Sonic hunted down and slew these attackers but Hammerhead himself got away.  Whilst chasing him, Sonic encountered Saitama the One Punch Man.  With Saitama’s bald head, Sonic mistook him as a member of the Paradisers.  Sonic attacked and was amazed with the ease at which Saitama read and blocked his moves.  Enraged, Sonic leveled a full assault and was quickly and definitively defeated.  

His pride was terribly wounded and Sonic would go on to make it his life’s mission to amass the skill needed to finally defeat Saitama.  Although it is unlikely that he will ever achieve this goal, his efforts to do so have resulted in many adventures, trials and hijinks.  

Actor Yūki Kaji provides the voice for Speed-o'-Sound Sonic in the original anime (with Erik Scott Kimerer voicing the character in the English language dub).  The speedy scoundrel first appeared in the fourth episode of One Punch Man, airing on October 25th, 2015.

Diabolik Lovers (ディアボリックラヴァーズ, Hepburn: Diaborikku Ravāzu) is a Japanese visual novel franchise by Rejet.

An anime adaptation was first announced at a 2013 event called the "Rejet Fes 2013 Viva La Revolution". During the "Otomate Party 2013" event later that year, it was announced that the adaptation would be directed by Atsushi Matsumoto and produced by the Zexcs studio.

Diabolik Lovers (ディアボリックラヴァーズ Diaborikku Ravāzu), abbreviated as DiaLover, is a Japanese anime television series directed by Shinobu Tagashira and produced by the animation studio Zexcs.

Diabolik Lovers More,Blood (ディアボリックラヴァーズ モア、ブラッド Diaborikku Ravāzu Moa,Buraddo) is the second season of the DiaLover anime series which takes its title from the second otome game of the same name, Diabolik Lovers MORE,BLOOD.

However, the second season is not a direct sequel to the first season, but a spin-off based on the second game of the franchise.

Plot

First season

Yui is a kind and gentle seventeen-year-old second year high school student who lived a normal and peaceful life, until her father moved overseas for work.

“Not wanting her to be alone” , he sends her to live with an old friend and his six sons. When she arrives at their mansion, she discovers that they are vampires.

Only to be informed that there is a different, much darker reason she was sent to them. While she optimistically accepts her situation, she unravels mysteries of the Sakamakis' past and her own.

Second Season

After living with the Sakamaki's for a month, Yui begins to have strange dreams and apparitions regarding a mysterious purple haired woman. Her fate takes a turn after she gets involved in an unexplainable fiery car accident with the Sakamaki's.

This incident heralds four new vampire brothers who suddenly appear and abduct Yui for their own purposes.

HEY!

Relatively recently (and by complete accident) while re-watching Diabolik Lovers with a friend, it turned out that she noticed a detail that I hadn't noticed before.

What's going on? The VA of Noriaki Kakyoin (her favorite character from "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure") is also the voice actor of Laito Sakamaki (the above-mentioned "Diabolik Lovers"), Daisuke Hikarawa.

On this occasion, I couldn't resist making a little drawing. They are both redheads, but extremely different from each other.

PS: It also turns out that Yuma Mukami and Prosciutto share the same VA, Tsatsuhisa Suzuki. It's the same with Koichi Hirose and Kanato (Yūki Kaji).

I don't think I'll ever look at these two series the same way again

30th Anniversary Yuki Kajiura LIVE Vol. #19 Kaji Fes. 2023

Oh wow! So, there has been no official announcement yet but people have already received their copies of the new FictionJunction album which contains a serial code that would allow you to participate in a ticket lottery (05/08~06/07) for the as of yet unannounced “Kaji Fes. 2023″. There already exists a website which will open today at 20:00 (JST). Apparently, this 2-day event in December  (12/08 & 12/09) will take place at Nippon Budokan which is a pretty big deal! We can expect a huge celebration with a ton of guest vocalists and muscians.

Now it finally makes sense why the upcoming “30th Anniversary Yuki Kajiura LIVE vol.#18 〜The PARADE goes on〜” tour seems kinda lacking in terms of concerts and guest vocalists.

I’ll update this post with more details once they make an official announcement (guess they will publish one later today)

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #9: Goodbye, Don Glees! (dir. Atsuko Ishizuka)

Childhood adventure, specifically childhood summer adventure, is magical. Some of my fondest memories from my childhood are of my friends and I running around the neighborhood. Sometimes with a mission, sometimes doing absolutely nothing at all, but regardless of intent, we were together and we were having fun. There is a mysticism to the finite nature of childhood summer that is inherently captivating, and its what makes films like Stand by Me and The Goonies work so well. Director Atsuko Ishizuka taps into that magical mysticism for Goodbye, Don Glees!, and puts a splash of her own emotionally resonant flair in there to round it out. Roma, Drop, and Toto (man, you gotta love those anime protagonist names) feel like boys you knew growing up, maybe you even were one of them. They just feel so full of life and wonder. You've got the one that's game for anything and everything, you've got the sensible one, that wants to fight the one that's game, but secretly enjoys the shenanigans, as well. Their motivations and reactions feel tactile and lifelike, and it causes the film to really stand out in the realm of modern anime, which often present their characters as so outlandish that, while cool, can make it hard to find an in or something to emotionally latch on to. All of these qualities make the film fun and provides a cast of characters and a setting that's easy to fall in love with, but what really sets Don Glees apart is a third act that whips you so hard with emotion and amazement it'll make your head spin. This is a film that, while still possibly more about the journey than the destination, makes the destination just as much a part of the journey as everything leading up to it, and leaves you sobbing with a payoff that is so worth it, any minor faults I had with the film prior to it's end just disintegrated before my eyes. This is one that I will be gladly and enthusiastically recommending to anyone and everyone for a good long while, and I'm so happy I took a chance on it.

Translation notes Konkonchiki - Traditional Japanese game, where player put one’s hand through a loop that had been created in the middle of a long sash and grab a cup of sake that was placed on a stand behind the loop, and should remove it until circle created by others closes. ( I had no idea how to translate it ) Melissa uses 'Tereru' which is more translated to being shy/awkward, but I picked to translate it this way because of previous phrase he says. It was hard to translate to make sense.
