I came across your post about Shawn and Angela married and being the parents of Zay in GMW and can you please post more about that AU?
I made that post in a sleep-deprived daze, but you know what? Sure. Anything to avoid revising a college assignment right now. This won't be entirely thought out, but I gave a shot.
The Zay Hunter Alternate Universe
The central change is Shawn and Angela stayed together and got married, with Zay being their biological son.
As their child, I don't think Zay would be much different. He'd perhaps be a little more laid-back and have an interest in the arts (I can see him a slam poet) but still his regular self.
Season One
In Girl Meets Home for the Holidays the new A-Plot is Riley meeting Zay for the first time since they were infants. It could be about the expectation that since their friends are friends they should be friends, but the two don't have anything in common.
At the end of the alternate episode, Shawn and Angela announce that they are moving into the vacant apartment and Zay will be entering Riley's class in the near future.
Since this is a hypothetical alternate universe where I don't have to worry about cast availability and production costs, I would have Shawn, Angela, and Zay in Girl Meets Game Night. It can serve as a peek into how Shawn and Angela's relationship evolved and to establish Zay further. Lucas and Zay could reunite for the first time, but their tense air doesn't have to be addressed right away.
Side Note: I'd have it be the end of Josh and Maya's "romance" because honestly what were the producers thinking?
Girl Meets Master Plan wouldn't happen, but I wouldn't mind it being replaced by Topanga and Angela befriending Maya's mother instead as a sort of women's night out vibe.
In Girl Meets First Date, Zay is dragged into the chaperoning alongside Maya and Farkle but insists they dip. Farkle refuses, taking his job seriously, but Maya agrees. To fulfill my younger ZayMaya heart and have them have a budding romance, perhaps having parallels to the LucasRiley date.
Season Two
In Girl Meets Gravity, Zay officially joins the class and becomes a regular. Him and Lucas are tense and are a bit passive-aggressive, but he stays to himself while the rest of the episode goes on.
In Girl Meets the Secret of Life, the storyline remains the same with some minor alterations. The tension between Zay and Lucas snaps and they reveal they were friends in Texas but something happened between them with Zay alluding Lucas is more violent than they all initially thought scoffing at the idea he is a moral compass. It comes to the climax where it is revealed Zay got in trouble a lot for being a rebellious free-spirit underneath his wallflower disguise, and Lucas took it upon himself to get him out of trouble. Zay shares his insecurities that in a world where everyone seems to have a second half, he just wanted reassurance Lucas was his.
In Girl Meets Pluto, Zay and Angela join the digging party.
In Girl Meets the Tell-Tale-Tot, I'd have the reason Maya goes to the party is to get proper closure on her former crush while referencing the fact she might have a new one but she isn't sure yet.
Girl Meets Hurricane doesn't happen, instead I'd make it seem like Maya is pseudo-replacing her mother with Shawn and Angela due to their artistic endeavors and her potential crush on Zay.
In Girl Meets Yearbook, Zay doesn't change.
In Girl Meets Semi-Formal, Zay asks Maya to the dance before Lucas asks Riley to the dance to kind of rub in his hesitance.
In Girl Meets Cory and Topanga, the Hunter couple gives Riley reassurance that she doesn't have to do it like her parents as it was nearly the downfall of their own romance.
In Girl Meets Texas, Zay is upset that Maya likes Lucas but resigns that he missed his chance and will continue being their friend.
In Girl Meets the New Year, Zay makes a brief visit but refuses to join the party as he knows how the holiday works. Farkle starts to pick up on Zay's feelings for Maya.
Season Three
In Girl Meets Ski Lodge, Zay confesses his feelings for Maya but says he doesn't expect her to return them. Maya says she doesn't know if she has feelings for him but wants to give dating him a chance as she had fun with him all the way back in Girl Meets First Date. They continue dating in the background for the rest of the series similarly to Riley and Lucas.
Since the Shawn and Katy's relationship plotline doesn't happen, I'd turn them into Zay and Smackle centric episodes.
In Girl Meets World of Terror 3, Zay would be there alongside Texan Lucas and seem to be feeding into each other's more negative personalities never having the blow-out in Texas that resulted in a change to both of them. Though he would be on somewhat good terms with Riley given their parents friendship.
In Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen, Zay and Maya discuss their relationship and show a more realistic but still hopeful view of it.
In Girl Meets Goodbye, Shawn and Angela reflect on their friendship with Cory and Topanga and share while they will be sad they go they would understand and still be here in New York.

Nobody Is “Self Made” Get comfy. It’s Storytime. About 100 years ago, Grandpa worked for slave wages on a plantation. He wanted more for his children. So he asked for a raise to pay for his children’s education. At this time, he only had daughters. The coloniser labelled Grandpa a troublemaker, kicked him off the plantation onto the reservation. Yes, Southern Africa has reservations … a colonial inheritance via USA and Australia. It’s how British colonisers managed and controlled their “native” population so that they could steal, extract from the land and exploit the people to do so … you know … capitalism. Long story, but Grandpa eventually ended up working in South Africa, in the mines. Folks prefer the story that he worked as a cook for a well-off family or colonial officers in Cape Town. It makes sense: he was an exceptional bread maker, I heard. He died before I was born, from a chronic illness common amongst mine labourers who worked 16 hour shifts below ground and then lived most of the year in squalid bachelor hostels eating the slop the mining companies provided their slave wage labourers. Again, extraction … exploitation … capitalism. Meanwhile, my grandmother, like most Black women in Southern Africa was legally confined to live and stay on the reservation. Eventually, her and my grandfather made a plan to buy a farm on a ninety-nine year lease (colonisers really are full of shit). That farm became our family village; a stable base from where all my aunts and uncles lived comfortably and went on to become professionals: teachers, business owners, nurses, doctor, dentist, banker … This all happened during a time when the official colonial policy was to keep Black folks impoverished, uneducated and servants to a supremacist settler minority. Despite all that, my grandparents, with a grade three level of education, got their children out. Every time I set foot on campus with all of these degrees and book learning, I’m deeply humbled and aware that there is no such thing as “self-made”. The land, my family, my ancestors have and continue to pour into me. I come as one but I stand before you as ten thousand. Onward. WU WEI – DOING NOTHING 無爲
Tumblr media
Wu wei means – in Chinese – non-doing or ‘doing nothing’. It sounds like a pleasant invitation to relax or worse, fall into laziness or apathy. Yet this concept is key to the noblest kind of action according to the philosophy of Daoism – and is at the heart of what it means to follow Dao or The Way. According to the central text of Daoism, the Dao De Jing: ‘The Way never acts yet nothing is left undone’. This is the paradox of wu wei. It doesn’t mean not acting, it means ‘effortless action’ or ‘actionless action’. It means being at peace while engaged in the most frenetic tasks so that one can carry these out with maximum skill and efficiency. Something of the meaning of wu wei is captured when we talk of being ‘in the zone’ – at one with what we are doing, in a state of profound concentration and flow.
Wu wei is closely connected to the Daoist reverence for the natural world, for it means striving to make our behaviour as spontaneous and inevitable as certain natural processes, and to ensure that we are swimming with rather than against currents. We are to be like the bamboo that bends in the wind or the plant that adjusts itself to the shape of a tree. Wu wei involves letting go of ideals that we may otherwise try to force too violently onto things; it invites us instead to respond to the true demands of situations, which tend only to be noticed when we put our own ego-driven plans aside. What can follow is a loss of self-consciousness, a new unity between the self and its environment, which releases an energy that is normally held back by an overly aggressive, wilful style of thinking.
But none of this means we won’t be able to change or affect things if we strive for wu wei. The Dao De Jing points out that we should be like water, which is ‘submissive and weak’ and ‘yet which can’t be surpassed for attacking what is hard and strong’. Through gentle persistence and a compliance with the specific shape of a problem, an obstacle can be worked round and gradually eroded.
The idea of achieving the greatest effects by a wise strategic passivity has been central to Chinese notions of politics, diplomacy and business. In the manuals on wisdom produced by Daoists, we are repeatedly told that rather than impose a plan or model on a situation, we should let others act frantically, and then lightly adjust ourselves as we see the direction that matters have evolved in.
In China’s Tang dynasty, many poets likened wu wei to the best aspects of being drunk. It wasn’t alcoholism they were promoting, but the decline in rigidity and anxiety that sometimes comes with being a little drunk, and which can help us to accomplish certain tasks. One poet compared someone inspired by wu wei to a drunk man who falls uninjured from a moving cart – such is their spiritual momentum that they are unaffected by accidents and misfortunes that might break those of a more controlled and controlling mindset.
Theories of painting from the Tang period onwards made wu wei central to artistic practice. Rather than laboriously attempting to reproduce nature faithfully, the artist should find nature within themselves and surrender to its calls. The painter’s task is not to imitate the external surface of things, but to present the qi or ‘spirit’ of things like mountains, trees, birds and rivers by feeling some of this spirit in themselves  – and then letting it flow out through the brush onto silk or paper.
It followed that Daoist thinkers revered not just the finished work of art, but the act of painting itself – and considered artist’s studios as places of applied philosophy. The Tang dynasty poet, Fu Zai, described a big party that had been thrown to witness the painter Zhang Zao in action:
Right in the middle of the room he sat down with his legs spread out, took a deep breath, and his inspiration began to issue forth. Those present were as startled as if lightning were shooting across the heavens or a whirlwind was sweeping up into the sky. The ink seemed to spitting from his flying brush. He clapped his hands with a cracking sound. Suddenly strange shapes were born. When he had finished, there stood pine trees, scaly and riven, crags steep and precipitous, clear water and turbulent clouds. He threw down his brush, got up, and looked around in every direction. It seemed as if the sky had cleared after a storm, to reveal the true essence of ten thousand things.
Fu Zai added of Zhang (whose works are sadly now lost) that, ‘he had left mere skill behind’ and that his art ‘was not painting, but the very Dao itself’. Zhang Zao would often fling his ink and spread it with his hands on a silk scroll, to create spontaneous forms that he then worked up into expressive images of nature. Splodges were incorporated and ingeniously made to flow back into the work. All this was wu wei.
A good life could not be attained by wu wei alone – but this Daoist concept captures a distinctive wisdom we may at times be in desperate need of, when we are in danger of damaging ourselves through an overly stern and unyielding adherence to ideas which simply cannot fit the demands of the world as it is.

师父 I have a question. Would it be accurate to say that most of the character's birth names have some type of a connection to the meaning of their courtesy names? And if this is the case, and you were to take a stab in the dark, what birth name do you think 晓星尘 would carry? We are never told this in any version, but I feel like we should be able to deduce it from the things we do know.
师父???
师父??????
喂,你们都是从哪儿冒出来的,怎么嘴巴都这么甜
okay, okay, so I got this ask and immediately hit the baidu baike page on 表字 / courtesy names, because while I’m familiar with the practice I’m not familiar with the ins-and-outs of how one comes up with courtesy names
so! armed with the knowledge of Chinese wikipedia, I can tell you that:
courtesy names were usually given to men on their 20th birthday (which is ??? considering that a lot of our characters start out at 16/17 but oh well), and women either at 15 (hah take that) or upon marriage (eh fine)
this has been a practice since like, the Shang Dynasty and didn’t fall out of practice really until the 20th century/May Fourth Movement. But this also means that the names of historical figures you thought you knew (like Chiang Kai-shek, for one!) are actually their courtesy names, not their personal names
about courtesy names:
As far as I can tell, there are generally three ways for coming up with courtesy names:
1) choosing a courtesy name that has some semantic relation to the personal name
the relationship can be synonymous, vaguely related, or antonymous
e.g. 宰予 Zai Yu (a student of that old dude, Confucius), courtesy name 子我 Ziwo. 予 yu and 我 wo are both first-person pronouns.
孟轲 Meng Ke (better known as Warring States philosopher Mengzi, or Mencius), courtesy name 子舆 Ziyu. 轲 ke refers to a the axle of a carriage, and 舆 yu means carriage/chariot.
朱熹 Zhu Xi (Song Dynasty philosopher), courtesy name 元晦 Yuan Hui. 熹 xi means ‘bright,’ 晦 hui means ‘dark’
2) choosing a courtesy name that reflects a desired ideal or virtue
e.g. 袁枚 Yuan Mei (Qing Dynasty poet), courtesy name 子才 Zicai. 才 cai means ‘talent’ or ‘talented, gifted.’
I’m laughing too hard, I have to include 杜甫 Du Fu, this LOSER, as an example:
杜甫 Du Fu (Tang Dynasty poet), courtesy name 子美. 美 mei means beauty, and contains moral valences of both ‘perfection’ and ‘virtuous’
for the record, Du Fu (along with ultimate warrior-poet-drunkard-troll 李白 Li Bai) is like, one of the most famous poets in the Chinese tradition, and commonly considered one of the greatest. I just can’t take him seriously because I studied his works for a semester and realized how much of a loser he is
3) choosing a courtesy name that has some connection to the personal name through a classic text
e.g. 赵云 Zhao Yun (Three Kingdoms general), courtesy name 子龙 Zilong. 云 yun means ‘cloud’ and 龙 long means ‘dragon.’ Courtesy name taken from a passage in the《周易》Zhouyi that runs 云从龙,风从虎 / clouds follow dragons, winds follow tigers (yeah idk man, the 《易经》Yijing / I Ching will always be a mystery)
I’m getting the sense that courtesy names are just like… societally-approved puns…
If you’re noticing 子 zi coming up a lot in these names, that’s because 子 is a respectful way of referring to men, so it gets used a lot.
about 晓星尘 Xiao Xingchen:
I am terrified of the idea of trying to deduce 晓星尘 Xiao Xingchen’s personal name from his courtesy name because I love him as a character too much, 我这个人没有资格给他取名啊. We also have no idea how he got his courtesy name – if it’s synonymous or antonymous with his personal name, which poem or quote the author had in mind. I think we can rule out the Puritan virtue-naming, though, since his courtesy name, semantically, isn’t really concerned with ethics. Assuming his personal name follows the pattern of everyone else in the CQL world (single-character personal name, double-character courtesy name), then his personal name could derive from a whole host of characters with some kind of relationship to either 星 OR 尘.
(side note: 晓星尘 Xiao Xingchen has such a beautiful name; literally, it can be translated as dawn star-dust, but the character 尘 chen / ‘dust,’ is specifically associated with the dust and dirt of the mortal realm a la 看破红尘 kanpohongchen. Juxtaposed with 星 xing / ‘star,’ you get this absolutely gorgeous blend of the ethereal and the earthly, the celestial and the human, which is such a good metaphor for Xiao Xingchen as a character. He just feels like the human embodiment of a passing star, moved by the suffering of humanity to come down to earth)
I did have a grand old time looking up texts that could cross-reference into a possible personal name. ‘星’ and ‘尘’ don’t show up in the same texts often, and rarely in the same line, but I did stumble across one of the few quotes I actually like from the 《论语》Lunyu / The Analects:
子曰:为政以德,譬如北辰,居其所而众星共之。”
The master said: governing with virtue is like being the North Star – it resides in its place and the myriad stars turn around it.
I’ve bolded 辰 chen and 星 xing above; you’ll see that it isn’t the same chen (辰 vs. 尘), but I feel that it’s a sufficiently bad pun homophonous enough to qualify. And there’s something pleasingly resonant about this quote with the character of Xiao “idealistic enough to come down from a mountain with dreams of changing the world” Xingchen here.
Which means that, if this is the quote Xiao Xingchen took his courtesy name from, we can find his personal name somewhere in there as well.
It’s a shame I don’t like any of the other characters in that quote, nor do I think that Xiao Xingchen is particularly Ruist/Confucian, so let’s keep looking shall we
In terms of poems that might be possible candidates, there’s a Tang Dynasty poem by 李商隐 Li Shangyin that contains all three characters 晓星沉 xiaoxingchen (the last character is off but still homophonous) and a Yuan Dynasty poem by 刘志渊 Liu Zhiyuan that contains 星尘 xingchen (correct characters):
嫦娥
[唐] 李商隐
云母屏风烛影深, 长河渐落晓星沉。
嫦娥应悔偷灵药, 碧海青天夜夜心。
not translating these because this ask is getting long enough as it is oh god
《减字木兰花·忘机索妙》
[元] 刘志渊
忘机索妙。万法皆空心上了。
无徼无边。一片清光万里天。
明明净体。不放星尘蝇点翳。
内外圆融。正住空空法界中。
can translate if requested but ngl brain is a little fried today, and this second poem is VERY Buddhist, and I never have enough sleep to deal with Buddhism
Xiao Xingchen’s personal name could be ANY of those characters in those two poems as well, though we can probably narrow it down to the same line or parallel phrases.
so, um, I’m a thousand words into this ask and haven’t come up with an answer yet. Part of this is because, again, I love Xiao Xingchen too much and I’m too afraid to try to guess at or give him a personal name. Part of this is also because I’m kind of in love with the idea that his personal name is 晓星 Xiao Xing (‘dawnstar’) – that is, the first two characters of his courtesy name. There is precedent for people’s courtesy names to contain their personal names (李白 Li Bai, courtesy name 李太白 Li Taibai; 杜牧 Du Mu, courtesy name 杜牧之 Du Muzhi), and I am inordinately fond of the idea of a younger Xiao Xingchen going up to Baoshan Sanren and choosing his own courtesy name. Because then his name becomes a promise to himself and a commitment to the world, that though he may have been born and raised and educated and cultivated in the lofty passes of an unknown mountain, rising with the dawn, at home with the stars, when he comes of age he will descend the mountain that he’s always called his home and come to know the dirt and dust and heartbreak and joy of the mortal realm.
I’m sorry I didn’t give you a good answer but I’m gonna need to take a crying break for songxiao now kthxbai
bonus songxiao content:
I just discovered that 晓岚 xiaolan is a binome that EXISTS, it’s a literary way of saying morning mist, and we all should be freaking out about this because that 岚 lan is 宋岚 Song Lan’s personal name
forget the bright moon and gentle breeze and proud snow and bitter frost, songxiao is now officially the morning mist that settles over softly singing leaves
逢张十八员外籍
