Books Read in 2023: The Why
That's right, just because it's much closer to 2025 than 2023 doesn't mean I can't still pull out this out! Mostly because I found in my Tumblr drafts that I had already done the work of putting the cover collages together, and what am I gonna do, waste that?
ANYWAY, BOILERPLATE EXPLANATION TIME: In a tradition I accidentally started for myself in 2016, at the end of the year I look back at my reading list and answer the question, why did you read this particular book? Books are arranged in chronological order of read date (unless it made more sense to put series books together), split into groups by target readership age, plus nonfiction at the end. As best I can tell, anyway; choosing between YA & middle grade for older books is often a trip. I'll toss in "how I heard of it" if I can still remember...
ADULT FICTION
(split into two parts because there are a lot)
Tumblr media
Run Rose Run - Dolly Parton & James Patterson. 2022.
Half the promise of a companion album, half just because “girl runs away to become a country star” sounds like the only-slightly-older version of my beloved Somebody Everybody Listens To.
How I heard of it: a book blog
Treasure State - C.J. Box. 2022.
Read & enjoyed the whole Cassie DeWell series so far (this is #6).
The Pink House - Louise Platt Hauck. 1933. Family Matters - Louise Platt Hauck. 1934.
See this post.
These Silent Woods - Kimi Cunningham-Graham. 2021.
Recommended by a Goodreads friend + father-daughter bonds* + self-sufficient life off the grid. (*the PLAN was to picture Owen + Maisie but then this gifset from Big Sky happened)
The Siren of Sussex - Mimi Matthews. 2022.
The Belle of Belgrave Square - Mimi Matthews. 2022.
Don't know what Past Me was doing with the collage order here, but I read Belle first -- originally checked out because beautiful cover + horses + Beauty and the Beast retelling for the latter. But on this particular day? I started with the second one because I was on day 2 of my Tom Hiddleston Spiral and omg look who just so happens to have a romance on deck featuring a British love interest.
And then I cycled back to the first book, now even more enthusiastic about my plan to cast Dev Patel as the love interest.
How I heard of it: book blogs
The Santa Suit - Mary Kay Andrews. 2021.
Picked it up for the cute cover, and then the first page was so much like the start of Arnie and a House Full of Company (woman driving up with her pets to a beautiful but decidedly overgrown/neglected old house she’s about to move into) that I got immediately sucked in.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Twenty-One Truths About Love - Matthew Green. 2019.
List format, bookstore owner, and mainly: it’s so flippin’ rare to find books about married couples in love whose only conflict is external, let alone such books from the man’s perspective.
How I heard of it: Barnes & Noble
The Bookshop of Secrets - Mollie Rushmeyer. 2022.
Beautiful cover + MN setting + antiquarian bookshop + hunting for a lost local treasure??
How I heard of it: can't remember :[
A Different Blue - Amy Harmon. 2013.
A mostly-age-appropriate student/teacher romance which I have saved for a billion years to get the casting right, only to throw that plan to the wind when I decided I could use Hiddleston for this too (plan quickly abandoned as he does not fit at all beyond sharing a nationality)
How I heard of it: Goodreads, a full decade ago
This Bird Has Flown - Susanna Hoffs. 2023.
I MAY have been googling keywords trying to find a novel that reminded me of Hiddleswift, and instead I got a way better option for casting him in (this one worked beautifully).
The Escape - Lisa Harris. 2020.
Bought cheap at a book sale because thriller (marshalls hunting an escaped fugitive) in the woods/mountains!
A Thing of Beauty - Lisa Samson. 2018.
Thought it would be a romance plus an element of cleaning out a hoarder’s house. "Former child star" sounded cool too.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Love For Beginners - Jill Shalvis. 2021.
Bought cheap because beautiful cover + a summery romance including dogs.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Bellman & Black - Diane Setterfield. 2013.
Jack Davenport narrates the audiobook and literally no other reasons.
How I heard of it: Libby (the app)
Smothered - Autumn Chiklis. 2018.
It me! (I’ve never seen another book about a college grad who immediately moves back home with her parents and struggles to find a job.)
How I heard of it: Dollar store
Doctor Who: Autonomy - Daniel Blythe. 2009.
Tie-in novels featuring Ten are always quick/fun/easy fare, and this one is set in a mall (!), but mostly, the audiobook is narrated by Georgia Tennant.
How I heard of it: Libby
Something Wilder - Christina Lauren. 2022.
A romance featuring an overnight trip on horseback AND searching for treasure?? Sold.
How I heard of it: Book blogs or YouTube
Famous For a Living - Melissa Ferguson. 2023.
A romance featuring an Instagram Influencer detoxing (fleeing the backlash of a scandal) via a job in a National Park? Sign me all the way up.
How I heard of it: Once Upon a Book Club
Dr. Laurie's Conquest - Berta LaVan Barker. 1980.
Bought cheap because romance about a vet, w/ specific mention of a horse. Read now for the Mount TBR challenge because it’s short.
How I heard of it: Goodwill
Something Wild & Wonderful - Anita Kelly. 2023.
Pacific Crest Trail = hiking inspiration! (and a side of romance never hurts)
How I heard of it: a book blog
Tin Camp Road - Ellen Airgood. 2021.
Loved her middle grade novels and wanted more of her writing; this plot looked more exciting than her adult debut.
How I heard of it: Goodreads/author's back catalog
The Grim Reader - Kate Carlisle. 2020.
Cute cover, and cozy mysteries make great audiobooks, especially when book-centric.
How I heard of it: Goodwill
Tumblr media
Lady Sunshine - Amy Mason Doan. 2021.
Beautiful cover, I loved her debut, 70s music scene in one timeline, and inheriting an estate in the other? Sold.
How I heard of it: Barnes & Noble
The Small Room - May Sarton. 1961.
Small, compact size + an intriguing setting and premise perfect for the fall season (young English instructor’s first teaching job at a New England liberal arts college; the publication date added to the intrigue).
How I heard of it: used book sale
The Study of Animal Languages - Lindsay Stern. 2019.
It is not very often you find novels about two college professors married to each other. Also, the title topic intrigued me.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Two Rogues Make a Right - Cat Sebastian. 2020.
Good Omens Season 2 briefly awoke the slash urge in me, and then this happened. Reviews calling this an indulgent, plotless pile of hurt/comfort fluff (positive) sealed the deal.
How I heard of it: Reddit
Home Before Dark - Riley Sager. 2020.
Hype convinced me to try one of his books; a woman restoring a supposedly haunted house definitely looked like the best one.
How I heard of it: book blogs, originally, I think
Lock Every Door - Riley Sager. 2019.
The House Across The Lake - Riley Sager. 2022.
I LOVED the above and immediately wanted more, and since the waitlist for his new one was too long I went for the next-best-sounding ones because they had the coolest settings (and THEN I was finally satiated for a while).
The Paris Apartment - Lucy Foley. 2022.
I had such a good time with Lock Every Door that obviously, it was time for another apartment mystery I’d been vaguely thinking about reading for a while, again due to its cool setting.
How I heard of it: book blogs
The Apartment - S.L. Grey. 2016.
When I searched the above in my library catalog, this title came up in relation. Absolutely I want to read a horror book set in a Paris apartment! (especially as the age difference between the MC and his wife maybe made me think about Michael Sheen & Anna. don’t judge me)
A Paris Apartment - Michelle Gable. 2014.
This ALSO came up in the search results and HELL YEAH I would like to read a novel based on one of the most fascinating news stories I’ve ever heard. (I actually had two options for this, but went with this one first because it seemed more literary; I wasn’t really in the mood for a romance)
Dead To Me - Cath Staincliffe. 2012. Bleed Like Me - Cath Staincliffe. 2013. Ruthless - Cath Staincliffe. 2014.
Catching up the Scott & Bailey TV series, learned they have tie-in novels?? IMMEDIATELY checked the first one out of my library and had such a good time with it that I rounded up the remaining ones ASAP.
How I heard of it: library catalog
The Good Turn - Dervla McTiernan. 2020.
Still in the mood for detective fiction from across the pond so time to finish out this trilogy.
When The Reckoning Comes - LaTanya McQueen. 2021.
This had some good reviews and I was intrigued by the prospect of a horror novel featuring a wedding at a haunted plantation. Maybe a mob of ghostly former slaves bringing a bloodbath? (no. it’s not that graphic. But it’s really good)
How I heard of it: a book blog
Plain Bad Heroines - Emily Danforth. 2020.
Her debut exceeded expectations so I was vaguely curious about this very different book, since she’s only published the two in over a decade, but my interest was solidified when I found an ARC copy with a promotional fake-newspaper insert inside. Wanted context for appreciating that.
How I heard of it: Goodreads/author's back catalog
Fair As A Star - Mimi Matthews. 2020.
Watching The Essex Serpent means I’m back on my stan train following a summer break, and what’s that? My new favorite romance author has one featuring a vicar?
How I heard of it: Goodreads/author's back catalog
You Look Something - Jessica Mehta. 2020.
Random library shelf pull because short read, interesting cover and premise (first-in-her-family college student, but written for an adult audience), and immediately intriguing writing style.
A Haunting on the Hill - Elizabeth Hand. 2023.
Cool cover + “officially licensed return to the setting of Shirley Jackson’s novel”?? The setting was the best part of that book so I hoped this would be the actually-scary version of what I wanted that one to be.
How I heard of it: ooh...can't remember if Goodreads, book blog or YouTube
Daughter of No Worlds - Carissa Broadbent. 2020. Children of Fallen Gods - Carissa Broadbent. 2021.
This random tumblr post about a series I'd never heard of before immediately sparked a vague hope to make this Loki/Sylvie-shaped; liked the first book enough to throw myself into the second, though I got burned out and have yet to finish the trilogy.
The Missing Treasures of Amy Ashton - Eleanor Ray. 2021.
“It's easier to love things than people. Things are safe. Things will never leave you.” I've never identified harder with a line from a book summary in my life.
How I heard of it: ...Goodreads? maybe? COME ON SELF this was literally only 10 months ago.
The Minuscule Mansion of Myra Malone - Audrey Burges. 2023.
A (magic) dollhouse and a 30-something reclusive blogger? It me! Add an implied romance with a guy who (somehow) owns the real-life version of the mansion and this sounds tailor-made for me.
How I heard of it: BookOutlet
Forgotten Trail - Claire Kells. 2023.
Read & enjoyed the first two in this National Parks mystery series, new November tradition unlocked.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Thornyhold - Mary Stewart. 1988.
Saw a cool illustration in a Readers Digest Condensed and wanted full context because I always love a Cool Mysterious Overgrown Inherited House.
How I heard of it: did I count this as "in another book" or "used book sale" when I made my graphs last year, I wonder.
The Last Ranger - Peter Heller. 2023.
I really like the way he writes both nature and men. (I also may have been fully immersed in my Jensen-Ackles-in-Big-Sky era.)
How I heard of it: Barnes & Noble
Just Like Magic - Sarah Hogle. 2022.
Loved her previous romance, and though skeptical about this one, I trusted the 5-star rec of a blogger with very similar reading tastes (she was CORRECT).
How I heard of it: a book blog
========
YOUNG ADULT / TEEN
(again broken into two segments because there are a lot)
Tumblr media
The Little Woods - McCormick Templeman. 2012.
Bought cheap because pretty cover + boarding school murder mystery
How I heard of it: used-book section of Barnes & Noble
Lawless Spaces - Corey Ann Haydu. 2022.
Mostly the beautiful cover, a little bit the promise of stories from multiple generations of women in one family.
How I heard of it: book blog
Friends Like These - Jennifer Lynn Alvarez. 2022.
Loved her first YA thriller.
How I heard of it: Goodreads/author's back catalog
Scattered Showers: Stories - Rainbow Rowell. 2022.
I love her but not all of her writing styles; after waiting One Eternity (9 years) for more contemporary writing from her I did not hesitate.
How I heard of it: book blog
We Walked the Sky - Lisa Fiedler. 2019.
Dual timelines: one teen a circus performer, the other her granddaughter who’s just inherited a Box of Memorabilia?? Two things I adore.
How I heard of it: dollar store
Butterfly Yellow - Thanhhà Lại. 2019.
Mostly intrigued by the working-on-a-ranch aspect.
How I heard of it: book blog
Five Survive - Holly Jackson. 2022.
Liked the whole AGGGTM trilogy, was excited to try a different and more thriller-y flavor from her.
How I heard of it: book blogs or YouTube?
Texas Gothic - Rosemary Clement-Moore. 2011.
A google result while trying to find a lost book for someone, and: Ranch-sitting? Ghosts? Kitchen-witch type magic in an otherwise real-world setting? That beautiful cover? SOLD.
Maybe One Day - Melissa Kantor. 2014.
Cancer novel + best friends have both been reliable staples for me in YA.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Last Secret You'll Ever Keep - Laurie Faria Stolarz. 2021.
Sequel (or really companion novel) to a book that impressed me 2 years ago.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
If You Find Me - Emily Murdoch. 2013.
Intense curiosity about how a girl who'd been hidden away in a trailer in the woods with her little sister by their neglectful mom for almost a decade would cope with a return to society and her bio dad.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Coming Back Alive - Dennis J. Reader. 1981.
70s teens running away to live off the land is one of my favorite tropes.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Final Gambit - Jennifer Lynn Barnes. 2022.
Love this series!
A Wild Thing - Jean Renvoize. 1970.
Another 70s teen running away to live off the land. This time in Scotland!
How I heard of it: lost-book forum on either Reddit or Goodreads
Beloved Monster - Helen Markley Miller. 1968.
18-year-old girl inherits a sprawling mansion? LET’S GO! Especially if it’s also vintage.
How I heard of it: ooh, it's been 5+ years, can't remember. Maybe a Goodreads friend?
The Perfect Place to Die - Bryan Moore. 2019.
Oh I ABSOLUTELY want to read a YA novel set in Chicago’s infamous murder mansion.
How I heard of it: Goodreads (via a staff rec post)
Song of the Shaggy Canary - Phyllis Anderson Wood. 1974.
A slow-burn romance between a divorced teen mom and a 20-year-old recently discharged soldier? Sign me up.
How I heard of it: pretty sure it was one of the Speaking for Ourselves volumes.
Loki: Where Mischief Lies - Mackenzie Lee. 2019.
Step 1: watch the Loki series as a result of your newfound actor stanning + an influential gifset, fall in love with the character and the seemingly-canon ship.
Step 2: immediately google for YA novels with this dynamic.
Step 3: have officially licensed YA fanfic fall straight into your lap.
I Tell A Lie Every So Often - Bruce Clements. 1974.
Found at a book sale, vaguely wanted to read ever since reading an essay about it in Lost Masterworks of Young Adult Literature.
Losing Gabriel - Lurlene McDaniel. 2016. Somebody's Baby - Lurlene McDaniel. 2017.
Books 3 and 4 in a series I love that the library doesn’t have; I already owned the latter and was glad to be able to continue after buying the third at a book sale.
The Last Exit to Normal - Michael Harmon. 2008.
Got it in a blind bag and thought it would be interesting to read about a teen (in Montana!) coming to terms with his fairly-newly-out gay dad’s relationship. (narrator: it wasn’t)
Camper Girl - Glenn Erick Miller. 2020.
Inherited camper-van + road trip!
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Tumblr media
The Year of the Rat - Clare Furniss. 2014.
Bought cheap because unusual premise in YA (mom dies giving birth to second child) + pretty cover.
How I heard of it: used-book section of Barnes & Noble
You Look Different In Real Life - Jennifer Castle. 2013.
Needed an audiobook, unusual premise for YA (reality/documentary series checking in every 5 years with teens they first filmed in kindergarten).
How I heard of it: Libby
Thief of Happy Endings - Kristen Chandler. 2018.
Love this author, plus horses. Specifically, mustangs!
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Summer of Sloane - Erin L. Schneider. 2016.
Pretty cover and just looked like a solid, summery contemporary YA novel.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Lake House - Sarah Beth Durst. 2023.
WHAT IN THE AWESOME SPOOK COVER (also, stuck on an island with an obviously and very unexpectedly abandoned/destroyed summer camp?? Spoooook!)
How I heard of it: YouTube, and I even specifically remember where -- GabbyReads
The Foreseeable Future - Emily Adrian. 2018.
Beautiful cover + unusual post-grad life plans (working as a CNA instead of college) always interest me
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Don’t Slam The Door When You Go - Barbara Corcoran. 1972.
I love this author...and yes, we have yet another round of runaways trying to live off the land. :D But this time in a ghost town!
How I heard of it: OpenLibrary
The Last Beautiful Girl - Nina Laurin. 2021.
Beautiful cover + Influencer + creepy historic maybe-haunted house, sold.
How I heard of it: Barnes & Noble
The Island - Natasha Preston. 2023.
Reliable (if mid) genre author + an empty amusement park setting? also, Influencers being lured to creepy islands for Murder Reasons never gets old.
How I heard of it: YouTube
Mermaid Park - Beth Mayall. 2005.
A google result while looking for a lost book title, idea of a girl training as a “mermaid” swimmer at a theme park sounded intriguing.
Everything Beautiful Is Not Ruined - Danielle Younge-Ullman. 2017.
I’ll read basically anything you have about teens being sent to Wilderness Struggle therapy, so this was on my TBR, but was particularly motivated after reading Paris Hilton's memoir and not being able to (cheaply) get my hands on Sarah Stusek's book.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Body of Christopher Creed - Carol Plum-Ucci. 2000.
Loved her second novel, have been curious about this one due to its acclaim for a while and then I found it at a book sale – read quickly to send it on its way again.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Creep: A Love Story - Lygia Day Penaflor. 2022.
Teen girl rationalizes stalking to enhance the experience of shipping her very-accessible real-life OTP? Sounds like the less-legal, IRL form of what we do every day with our favorite celebrity couples on social media and I was curious to see it play out. A little bit because I also made personal celebrities out of some classmates in school, so I recognize the thrill of seeing them in person, though I did not stalk them.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Silver: Return to Treasure Island - Andrew Motion. 2012.
90% because the audiobook is narrated by David Tennant and for once it’s not part of an obnoxiously silly children’s series. 10% because adventure and treasure-hunting.
How I heard of it: Libby
Game Change - Joseph Monninger. 2017.
I like this author and have a soft spot for high school football (further enhanced by the football-player character on the new Goosebumps series).
How I heard of it: used book sale
The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone - Adele Griffin. 2014.
Mixed media formatting! Such a cool and unusual way to tell a narrative.
How I heard of it: I thiiink, many years ago, I was specifically googling for books with unusual formatting.
Heartwood Box - Ann Aguirre. 2019.
"When Araceli Flores Harper is sent to live with her great-aunt Ottilie in her ramshackle Victorian home--" literally sold. (combined with how it looked like a horror book w/ the possibility of ghosts)
How I heard of it: used book sale
Sunny Song Will Never Be Famous - Suzanne Park. 2021.
Cute cover and title, YouTuber in need of social media detox, FARM IN IOWA SETTING?? Sold.
How I heard of it: library browsing
Nobody Else Can Walk It For You - P.J. Petersen. 1982.
Found on the “free” cart shortly after hearing about it on Goodreads' lost-book forum and thinking it sounded like a cool thriller.
Dream to Me - Megan Paasch. 2023.
Haunting cover similar to my beloved Amelia Unabridged, sisters, inheriting a mildly creepy old house
How I heard of it: library browsing
These Things I've Done - Rebecca Phillips
Bought cheap at the dollar store for the girl-dating-late-best-friend’s-brother aspect (shared grief ftw!). Read now to confirm I could unhaul it.
=========
CHILDREN'S / MIDDLE GRADE
Tumblr media
Survival Strategies of the Almost Brave - Jen White. 2015.
Bought cheap at the dollar store because cool cover + sisters fending for themselves when abandoned by dad.
Polo Cowboy - G. Neri. 2021.
Sequel to a surprising hit I read last year.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Diddakoi - Rumer Godden. 1972.
Recommended by a Goodreads friend because horse! + Traveler girl + reliable classic author.
Stella - McCall Hoyle. 2021. Just Gus - McCall Hoyle. 2023.
Dog book! recommended by a Goodreads friend. Loved it so much I read the companion novel ASAP.
Grand National - John R. Tunis. 1973.
Bought cheap at Goodwill because vintage horse book; read now to see if I could get rid of it (yes).

Reread of a childhood classic in anticipation of the new sequel.

I wanted to read about a girl growing up on a goat farm.
How I heard of it: OpenLibrary
Sweet Home Alaska - Carole Etsby Dagg. 2016.
I liked her previous book and was excited to learn about another part of American history that was new to me.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Thornbush Jungle - Rutherford G. Montgomery. 1966.
I will read anything he writes about animals.
How I heard of it: antiquarian bookstore
Maisie Lockwood Adventures no. 2: The Yosemite Six - Tess Sharpe. 2022.
Loved the first book, finally bought the second when I couldn't borrow it from anywhere.
The Eagle's Shadow - Nora Martin. 1997.
Reminded me of my favorite childhood movie, Journey to Spirit Island (at least in terms of setting and a similar culture).
How I heard of it: used book sale
Lila and Hadley - Kody Keplinger. 2020.
Girl + dog story, with a photographic cover (is the only thing that overcame my author grudge).
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Me, The Beef and the Bum - Charles Hammer. 1984.
50% funny title, 50% I love cows
How I heard of it: a book about teen books
Sardines - Sashi Kaufman. 2022.
Pleasantly surprised by her ability to write boys in YA, waited a million years for a third release from her (even if it was middle grade).
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Vandals of Treason House - Nancy Veglahn. 1974.
Vintage book about cleaning up & learning about a historic house? Neato.
How I heard of it: Goodreads/lost book forum
Sire Unknown - Marjorie Reynolds. 1968.
“Read because…” Vintage horse book, next question. (as to why I read it NOW, working on the Mount TBR challenge and randomly pulled this from the shelf)
How I heard of it: used book sale
The Explorer - Katherine Rundell. 2017.
Liked a previous book of hers, always love “crashed and got lost in the jungle” stories.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Gallery - Laura Marx Fitzgerald. 2016.
STUNNING cover + excited to read about a girl working as a maid in a fancy 1920s mansion
How I heard of it: a book blog
NONFICTION
Tumblr media
A $500 House in Detroit: Rebuilding an Abandoned Home and an American City - Drew Philp. 2019.
Available audiobook + always interested in old-house renovation.
How I heard of it: Libby
Wildflower - Drew Barrymore. 2015.
A People magazine cover story on her reminded me I had meant to read this, since she’s always been a favorite actress.
How I heard of it: ONTD
The Zoo on the Road to Nablus - Amelia Thomas. 2008.
Bought cheap because beautiful cover + always interested in reading about specific zoos, especially those affected by war in the Middle East.

Reminded me of Boomer’s Bucket List, but also I will read most pet memoirs
How I heard of it: Goodreads
My Bookstore - ed. Ronald Rice. 2012.
What could be better than a bunch of authors writing short essays about their favorite bookstore?
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Animals Welcome - Peg Kehret. 2012.
Who can say no to a short memoir aimed at kids about animal rescue, especially by a prolific children’s book author from my youth.
How I heard of it: used book sale
Open Book - Jessica Simpson. 2020.
I’ve always liked her despite not knowing much about her work; seeing this at Goodwill finally inspired a read.
How I heard of it: ONTD
The House of Spirits and Whispers - Annie Wilder. 2005.
Saw it at a garage sale, definitely here for a spooky haunted house of relatively local interest.
The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide - Jenna Fischer. 2017.
I LOVE HER.
How I heard of it: ...hm, can't remember! maybe ONTD, maybe just Office fandom in general?
This Is Not a Pity Memoir - Abi Morgan. 2022.
While in another acute round of stanning Mr. & Mrs. Tennant via the latter's social media, I was trying to figure out what kind of novel would most satisfyingly represent the vibes of their relationship and concluded it’s not the falling in love so much with them as it is the steadfast endurance, so maybe hurt/comfort in the form of illness? A bit of googling later and this was so wildly, absurdly on the nose despite being nonfiction (a British actor and a wife on the writing/production side of the industry, with kids) that I had to read it immediately.
Paris: The Memoir - Paris Hilton. 2023.
I don’t have strong feelings about her as a person, so I was mostly just curious – especially the part about being sent to abusive juvenile behavioral rehab facilities, a topic I’ve always found fascinating.
How I heard of it: ONTD
The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter - Russell T. Davies & Benjamin Cook. 2010 edition.
Good Omens sends me directly into a Doctor Who renaissance, time to finally read this tome I’ve been saving since the last time that happened! (four years ago) This is the only era of Doctor Who I care about so the more detail, the better.
How I heard of it: Half Price Books. Like back when it was relatively new, and I was a fool who didn't get it because it was pricey.
The Last Bookseller: A Life in the Rare Book Trade - Gary Goodman. 2021.
The subject latter alone would have gotten my attention, but this was actually my favorite bookstore until it closed.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Lessons from Tara: Life Advice from the World’s Most Brilliant Dog - Andy Rosenfelt. 2015.
Read & loved his first book about big fluffy rescue dogs, wanted more. Read now because a Goodreads friend just read it and reminded me of that fact.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Office BFFs - Jenna Fischer & Angela Kinsey. 2022.
I LOVE THEM AND THEIR FRIENDSHIP AND THEIR PODCAST.
She Memes Well - Quinta Brunson. 2021.
Love Abbott Elementary; had completely forgotten this existed until I was looking at Goodreads Choice Awards nominees of years past and then read on a whim.
Tell Me Everything - Minka Kelly. 2023.
Speaking of things I found out about via Goodreads Choice, I don’t know much about her as a person, but she’s really pretty and this sounded compelling and harrowing.
Sold to the Lady in the Green Hat - Emma Bailey. 1962.
I love auctions (well, estate sales, but same principle), I love old books, and I LOVED the illustrations and charming humor of vintage domestic memoirs I saw immediately at a glance.
How I heard of it: sale corner of the library
The Woman in Me - Britney Spears. 2023.
Mild curiosity due to inescapable hype, but mostly just determination to publicly confirm it wasn’t any better than her sister’s book, which I read the year before.
How I heard of it: ONTD
=========
Whew!! Done. I'd like to tell you and myself that I'm keeping up with 2024's log, but I actually got bogged down in trying to log every detail (cover thoughts, where it's set, why I was drawn to it, why I read it now, where I got it from), and burned out around early June because this is also the year I'm going to read 200 books apparently.
And this post already feels pretty messy. So. I guess we'll just see if it is in fact the last one or not..

Two weeks later, he found himself in Boston as part of the return for Andrew Benintendi (by way of the Royals and Khalil Lee). He went from the Blue Jays to the Mets as part of the Steven Matz trade. You might recognize Winckowski, who’s been quite the traveler this winter. No one from this group was on their 40-man roster. For Boston, catchers Roldani Baldwin and Austin Rei, and pitchers Seth Blair, Matt Carasiti, Raynel Espinal, Durbin Feltman, Franklin German, Zac Grotz, Kaleb Ort, Andrew Politi, Thaddeus Ward, and Josh Winckowski were re-assigned to minor league camp. There are unlikely to be many surprises from this early round of cuts. Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom announced the assignment of 12 players to minor league camp. The Red Sox were one of a number of teams to make their first round of roster cuts today.

SenGen Week: Day 04 (Correction)
Day 04: January 01
Soulmate au / first date/meeting
-'-
Title: Colorfools.
-'-
A/N: You can see every color, except for the color of your soulmate's eyes. Once you see the eyes of your soulmate, you can finally see the color that has never been available for your sight.
-'-
He was lonely, and had nothing better to do that day, so he'd gone to a nice coffee shop downtown just to kill some time outside his house. Being indoors all the time was getting to his nerves. The coffee shop was a nice place, decorated with whites and browns in a second floor, and a big window with view to the outside, but the view was plagued with people and cars; nothing interesting to see. He opened a notebook containing drafts for his next book, as his drink and snack arrived, he was already engrossed in his writing and thanked the waiter absently.
He wrote and scratched several lines, using at least three of his pages when he decided to leave his pencil aside to take a sip of his coffee, looking once more to the window as he munched on a donut. And he noticed something, someone who looked briefly upwards and Gen got a glimpse of their eyes. Their eyes. A color he'd never seen before, a beautiful and mesmerizing shade enlightened by the sunlight. And as soon as the person –a boy, a teen?– had glanced up, his eyes went back to the floor, leaving Gen to observe a very strange mop of hair that stuck up. He was with two other people, a tall young man, and a girl with long hair, but Gen barely paid them any mind, he was stuck on the other teen, the one with odd hairstyle, and such beautiful eyes. He was about to get up from his seat and run to him, run to catch him. But as soon as Gen had seen him, the crowd had engulfed him.
Red. He knew what the color he'd never been able to see was called. Red. Gen saw it, again, in the traffic lights, in the neon signs of Tokyo, in the package of his favorite drink, Cola. Red. In the cover of his notebook, in the ink of his pen, in the drawings of his deck of cards. Gen saw red, the color that was missing from his life; and he loved it. He loved the color that painted his soulmate's eyes. And he regretted the fact that he may never see this person again, may never even hear his voice.
-'-
The girls at school –as well as some boys– seemed to have gained an interest in someone named Asagiri Gen, a sort of magician. One day, one of his classmates read aloud a quiz from one of his 'psicology' books, and Senkuu quickly disregarded it's value, and decided it wasn't really worth the effort to read more from it, so he didn't even looked at it.
That afternoon when the rest of his classmates as well as Taiju and Yuzuriha had left the classroom, he noticed his classmate had left the aforementioned book in there, so he took it to put it away and return it the next day, he lifted the book and saw it's cover which portrayed Asagiri Gen himself in the front. Asagiri Gen. A magician. A 'writer'. The complete opposite of him. He saw the deep blue of his eyes. He saw it in the night sky, in his father's tie, in the sea, in the wallpaper of his computer, in his jeans. He saw the color he'd never seen before, and got excited –happy, even–. So he thanked Asagiri Gen for putting his face in his trashy book, and left it at that. There was no need for Senkuu to do anything else about this.
And that was a filthy lie, because he tamed his hair down, wore a hat and glasses to attend one of his shows, he sat on the back row, hidden. Asagiri Gen's magic show was no big thing, he used every old trick in the book with a little personal twist. His smile was big and false. Like his show, Asagiri Gen seemed to be an act. Senkuu wondered what he'd be like in reality. So every now and again, he would read one of his trashy books, aimed towards the public to produce sales, and once or twice, assisted to his shows. Never once did he make contact.
-'-
'AD 5738, April 1st'
Whoever carved that was totally insane. Whoever carved that, had kept track of time while being petrified. Whoever carved that, was awesome. And Shishio Tsukasa feared this person. This Ishigami Senkuu person had to be someone worth knowing. He was hopeful to find him alive, despite having heard Tsukasa say he'd killed him with his own hands. He was quickly despached to go find the village of primitive people and the smell of ramen invaded Gen's nostrils.
'Ishigami Senkuu must have lived, then' was his first thought.
He snuck around the people and snatched a bowl, being his usual confident self even as he got surrounded by three of them, aiming very sharp spears –and knives– at him.
"I thought I'd seen your face somewhere before, Asagiri Gen"
He turns to look at the one he can only asume, is Ishigami Senkuu, and his heart beats so wildly in his ribcage he'd swear it would burst it open. He only ever saw them once, he only ever saw him once, but Gen would recognize that shade of scarlet, that weird mop of hair, anywhere. It took all of his self-control to keep his façade. The young man didn't seem fazed at all, he put Gen to work and got information out of him, not that he was going to keep it a secret anyhow.
"All I have to do is make a false report. 'It was only a primitive village.' 'Senkuu is dead.' With that, I can save you, Senkuu-chan"
'^I can save you^ I don't want you to die'
He hoped Senkuu had gotten the message, since he didn't show any reaction to seeing him. And Gen knew he'd never mistake his soulmate.
'But. Soulmate or not, you're amazing, and I want you to live.'
-'-
He didn't know if Gen was avoiding the subject on purpose, but he supposed it wasn't good to just dodge the situation forever. The matter of being soulmates had to be adressed eventually.
"Senkuu-chan~!" Ah, yes, speaking of the devil.
He turns to look at Gen, smiling brightly, the scar on his cheek making his grin far more devious than it should be.
"What are you doing up so late at night?" he questions.
"I could ask you the same, Gen"
"Insomnia~! Your turn~!"
"Stargazing" he grins.
"You like the stars?"
"Yeah, they're a good way to know your location, and the time at night. Although, after so many years, they shifted in their place. They're not where I remember them being"
"Everything has changed" he mumbles nostalgic.
"It's not so bad. With consistent and sustained effort we can bring it back to being more or less where everything was. It'll take years, perhaps even decades, though"
"Ah, yes. You'll work everyone to exhaustion"
"You damn right, I will" he beams.
Gen can only sigh, a tiny smile tugging on his lips.
-'-
An observatory. Gen really surprised him this time. 'He must've remembered when we spoke of the stars' he mused. He really should speak to him now, he knew jackshit about these kinda feelings, but he was sure this was more than just a gift for his birthday, the words the mentalist spoke were far too much of a hint.
As if being summoned by his thoughts –again– the mentalist burst throught the entrance on the floor elegance in his movements.
"Stargazing?" he asked.
"Yes and no. I'm trying to find where the stars are now"
There's a map on the floor, notes and constellations drawn into it. Gen takes a sit right next to him.
"And how is that going?"
"My hand hurts from scribbling so much" he sighes.
The mentalist takes his right hand gingerly, tracing circles and triangles and squares into his open palm, lips pursed –almost pouting–, inspecting it as if it were an antient text.
"Don't tell me you read palms too, mentalist" he jokes.
"Why, yes I do~!" Gen answers gaze never leaving his hand.
"Oh really? And what does my future say?"
"You have a tewible luck. As always"
"Mmm"
Senkuu changes the position of their hands, now he's the one tracing figures on Gen's palm, making him chuckle.
"What does my future say, Senkuu-chan~?" he asks amused.
"It says... You will be kissed shortly"
"Eh? Kissed?"
Senkuu leaned –eyes open– and placed a chaste kiss on Gen's lips. And Gen looks cute when he gets paralized and blushing, his eyes three times larger than a moment ago.
"Thank you, for my birthday present. And for the color blue. It's beautiful"
Gen tries to speak a few times, but he only manages to look like a fish, so he gives up, and buries his face on his sleeved hands.
"Never seen you so flustered before. How cute" Senkuu chuckles.
"You're so mean~!" he pouts.
"Sorry. But it seemed like we avoided the subject for too long"
He spreads his fingers, letting only one bright iris to be discerned.
"I suppose you're right" he agrees. "You knew since the modern days who I was"
"I saw your face in one of your trashy books"
"Heh. I saw you once from inside a coffee shop"
"Really?"
"Yes. It was only a fleeting moment when you looked up" he explained sheepishly. "I wanted to go after you then, but you got lost in the crowd. I think you were with Taiju-chan and Yuzuriha-chan"
"Heh, I probably was"
"I like it. Red, I mean"
"I wonder if everyone just loves the color they'd never seen before"
"Probably most people do" he smiles, finally revealing his face.
And Senkuu takes the chance to steal another kiss. This time Gen responds, draping his arms on Senkuu's neck, the other pulls Gen closer by his waist.
Scarlet and cobalt meet, they suit each other quite beautifully.

The Cast: Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Kristen Wiig (Cheetah), Pedro Pascal (TBA), Connie Nielsen (Hippolyta), Robin Wright (Antiope)
The Batman - June 25, 2021
Tumblr media
In October 2014, a Batman standalone film was announced by Warner Bros. By 2016, Ben Affleck was set to star in, produce, direct, and write the project. Geoff Johns and Chris Terrio were hired as co-writers. After various drafts of the script had been completed the film was moving towards beginning shooting by 2017, until Affleck stepped down as director that January. Affleck initially cited his intentions being to more specifically focus on starring as Batman, later acknowledging that after various attempts to get the script where he wanted it, it simply became "time to let someone else have a shot at it". In July 2017, Matt Reeves confirmed that the script was being rewritten: the final draft was completed by January 2019. Reeves reworked the story to focus on Batman earlier on in his career as a vigilante; he said the film will be character-driven and stylistically noir, and will explore the detective aspect of the character to a greater extent than previous films. In January 2019, Affleck confirmed he will not reprise his role as Batman, but remains involved as a producer. Principal photography is expected to begin in November 2019.
The Suicide Squad - August 6, 2021
Tumblr media
In March 2016, a Suicide Squad sequel was announced to be in development, with David Ayer returning to direct. Adam Cozad was hired to write the script by March 2017. By July 2017, a new story treatment was written by Zak Penn. In September, Gavin O'Connor was hired as director after Ayer dropped out, as well as co-screenwriter with Anthony Tambakis, David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick. The final draft of the script was completed in October 2018, though production was delayed due to conflicts with Will Smith's production schedule, followed by O'Connor leaving the project. Production was placed on hold as Warner Bros. believed the script was too similar to Birds of Prey. Charles Roven, Michael De Luca, Peter Safran, Geoff Johns, Richard Suckle, Dan Lin and Andy Horwitz will produce the film. In January 2019, the film was retitled The Suicide Squad, with James Gunn directing, from a new script he wrote. Gunn chose the project over various other films Warner Bros. has in development, including the Man of Steel sequel. In March, Idris Elba joined the cast. He was initially going to replace Smith, who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, as Deadshot, but it was later decided that Elba would play a new character so Smith could return in the future. Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis will reprise their roles as Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, and Amanda Waller, respectively.  David Dastmalchian and Daniela Melchior were cast to portray Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher, respectively. John Cena is in talks to portray an as-of-yet unnamed role. Other members of the titular team include King Shark and Peacemaker. Production will begin in September 2019
Aquaman 2 - December 16, 2022
Tumblr media
By December 2018, a sequel to Aquaman was in development. In October 2018, James Wan stated the first film intentionally left room for a follow up. Jason Momoa later revealed that he had an idea for the sequel, and had written the first act. The actor pitched the story to Warner Bros. through Toby Emmerich and producer Peter Safran, who were receptive. By December, high pre-release ticket sales and positive reception for the film had convinced Warner Bros. to begin developing a sequel. In January 2019, Warner Bros. confirmed development, with intentions for Wan to return as director. The following month, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, co-writer of the first film, signed on as screenwriter. In March, Safran announced the film will explore the other Seven Kingdoms of Atlantis.
Unknown Release Dates:
The Flash
Tumblr media
By July 2013, Greg Berlanti was developing a film that centered around the Barry Allen incarnation of the Flash. In October 2014, The Flash was announced with a scheduled 2018 release date. The initial script was drafted by Berlanti, Chris Brancato, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim. In April 2015, a story treatment was written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller based on the previous draft, with the intention being that the duo would also direct the film. Over the next two years, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa, had individually dropped out as directors of the project due to creative differences with the studio. In January 2017, Joby Harold was hired to do a page-one rewrite of the script, which previously had drafts written by Grahame-Smith and Famuyiwa. In July 2017, the title for the film was changed to Flashpoint, based on the comic book story arc of the same name. In March 2018, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were hired to co-direct. Zack Snyder, Alex Gartner, Geoff Johns, Dan Mazer, Richard Suckle, Deborah Snyder, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Jon Berg, Denise Di Novi, and Michael Disco will serve as producers on the project. Dan Mazeau was brought on as co-writer, followed by Grahame-Smith and Brancato as additional screenwriters. The directors had initially announced the release of The Flash to be sometime during 2020, though production was delayed from April 2019 to later in the year for additional script work. By February 2019, Daley and Goldstein had contributed to the script with the film's star revealing that the plot will involve the Speed Force multiverse. Principal photography is scheduled take place in Atlanta, Georgia, and follow in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, England. In March, Ezra Miller was hired to co-write a new draft in a collaboration with Grant Morrison. The tone of the film is expected to be similar to Back to the Future. The Flash is on track to release in 2021.
Lobo
Tumblr media
In September 2009, Warner Bros. announced that Guy Ritchie would direct a live-action adaptation. Variety described the premise: "Lobo is a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled antihero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenage girl to stop the creatures." Ritchie was scheduled to begin production of Lobo in early 2010 and bring an "irreverent, gruff tone" to the film as he did with previous films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, though the studio was reportedly aiming for a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. In early 2010, it was reported that Ritchie had left the project in order to pursue working on a sequel to his hit film Sherlock Holmes instead. The future of the movie was then put on hold. In 2012, Deadline reported that Brad Peyton would write and direct the film. In July 2012, Dwayne Johnson announced via Twitter that he was in talks with Joel Silver and Brad Peyton to portray Lobo, however on in February of the following year, Johnson left the project to play another villain from the DC Comics, Black Adam, in Shazam!. In March 2016, it was reported that Jason Fuchs will be writing the film's script. As of February 2018, DC Films is eying Michael Bay to direct the film inspired by the success of Tim Miller's Deadpool film. Fuchs is currently rewriting the script at Bay’s request so that the script can be lowered to under to under $200 million.
Justice League Dark
Tumblr media
Rumors in November 2012 suggested that Guillermo del Toro was working on a Justice League Dark film titled Heaven Sent. It would feature Deadman, the Spectre, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, Zatara, Sargon the Sorcerer, and Etrigan the Demon. Del Toro later confirmed in January 2013 that he was working on such a film, with the working title, Dark Universe, and was hiring a screenwriter. Del Toro revealed Swamp Thing, Constantine, The Spectre, Deadman, Zatanna and Zatara were characters in the story.
In March 2013, del Toro gave an update on the film at WonderCon 2013, while talking about his film Pacific Rim. He revealed that the story bible was complete and he hoped to start the screenplay soon. Production would begin after his next project, Crimson Peak. The film's story would center around John Constantine recruiting Swamp Thing, Etrigan the Demon, Deadman, Spectre, and Zatanna. The film would not be an origin story, with each character already established and elements of their backstory coming into play throughout the film. Del Toro also revealed that Floronic Man would be in the film. In May 2013, del Toro revealed that his script featured Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman and Zatanna as the team, with others "in the mix". He also revealed that he was still waiting for the go-ahead from Warner Bros. Pictures. Del Toro revealed in July 2013 that he hoped that the DC Extended Universe, which started with Man of Steel, would become as cohesive as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he added that if there was any correlation to that universe and this film, he would honor it.
In October 2013, del Toro stated he felt his film would be able to coexist with the television series, Constantine and reiterated that the film was still active and in the writing process. In July 2014, del Toro once again stated he was working on the film, and stated it would be independent from the universe established with Man of Steel, saying, "DC and Warners have been very clear that they are trying to keep [this film and Sandman] separate so when the time comes they can unite them, once they know they’re quantifiable." Del Toro also added that his Constantine would not adhere to the continuity established in the television series, but he would consider incorporating elements from it, and even think about casting the same actor (Matt Ryan). In November 2014, del Toro confirmed that the script was complete and handed it in to Warner Bros. to be reviewed. In December 2014, he hinted that the film would be part of the DC Extended Universe.
In April 2015, del Toro said the script revision has been handed in and if there was availability in his schedule, he would direct it; if not, "somebody else will do it... [The film] needs to fall into the plan of the shared universe." In June 2015, the film was confirmed to still be in development at Warner Bros., with some of their other Vertigo Comics film adaptations moving to New Line Cinema. The Hollywood Reporter stated that del Toro was no longer attached to the project. In July 2016, Swamp Thing test footage was released directed by Joseph Kahn. In August 2016, it was announced that Doug Liman would direct the film with del Toro and Scott Rudin producing and Michael Gilio writing, with the film being titled Dark Universe. By May 2017, Liman left the film to focus on directing Chaos Walking. At the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2017, the film's title was announced to be Justice League Dark. By August 2017, Gerard Johnstone was hired to polish the script.
Black Adam
Tumblr media
In September 2014, after being considered to play Shazam and Lobo, Dwayne Johnson was cast to play Black Adam in the DCEU. The character was intended to be introduced in Shazam!, but by January 2017 the film's production studios had chosen to divide the narrative to focus on Black Adam's origin. Johnson, who is also attached as producer, has stated the two characters will cross paths in a future film, while other DC characters will make appearances in Black Adam. In October, Adam Sztykiel was hired to write the script. Co-producer Hiram Garcia stated the film will be gritty and violent, similar to the comics. By February 2019, the script was nearly finished with Warner Bros. and Seven Bucks Productions searching for a director. The plot will involve the Carter Hall version of Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Stargirl. Principal photography is scheduled to begin sometime between late 2019 and early 2020.
Justice League sequel
Tumblr media
In October 2014, Justice League Part Two was announced, with Zack Snyder returning as director. In June 2016, Deborah Snyder revealed that Justice League would not be one film split in two, leaving the sequel untitled. The film was scheduled to be released on June 14, 2019, but production was pushed back to accommodate The Batman. In October 2017, J. K. Simmons stated that work on the script was in-progress, while in December, Variety reported that there were "no immediate plans" for Snyder to direct. By 2019, Warner Bros. had prioritized standalone films over the project, although Patty Jenkins noted she would be open to directing the next Justice League film. Though Ben Affleck will not play Batman in Matt Reeves' film, he is still signed on to reprise the role for the Justice League sequel.
Green Lantern Corps
Tumblr media
A film based on the Green Lantern Corps was announced to be in development in October 2014. In January 2017, David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes were hired to co-write the screenplay, based on a story by Goyer and Geoff Johns, with Goyer also serving as producer. Warner Bros. described the film as "Lethal Weapon in space". In January 2018, Goyer reaffirmed that despite the franchise's leadership shakeup the film was still in active development. By June 2018, Geoff Johns was hired to do a rewrite on the script, in addition to his role as producer. Johns stated that the script draws inspiration from his work on the New 52 Green Lantern comics. Green Lantern Corps was scheduled for release on July 24, 2020, but is believed to have been delayed.
Man of Steel sequel
Tumblr media
In August 2016, The Wrap reported that Warner Bros. put the film in active development as a top priority. The news of a stand-alone Superman film were later confirmed by Dany Garcia, Henry Cavill's manager. While promoting Arrival, Amy Adams confirmed that work had begun on the screenplay. In March 2017, it was announced that Matthew Vaughn was being eyed by Warner Bros. to direct. In April 2018, it was reported that Christopher McQuarrie is considering directing the film but later dropped it. In June 2018, Cavill revealed that he is preparing to reprise the role.
Booster Gold
Tumblr media
In September 2015, a film centered around Booster Gold and the Ted Kord Blue Beetle was announced to be in development with producer Greg Berlanti. The film's tone was described as a buddy cop film with connections to Justice League. By May 2016, Zak Penn had begun work on a script. Berlanti stated that the project had "no connective tissue" to other films at one point, but following a consideration for television series adaptation at Syfy, the project entered a script rewrite from Zack Stentz in May 2016. Berlanti was asked about his involvement with the DCEU as a whole, and indicated that he has interest in the Booster Gold film. After years of being involved in the project's development, Berlanti was reported to be in negotiations with the studio to serve as director. By March 2018, the script, co-written by Berlanti, had been completed. Berlanti stated production would begin once Warner Bros. decides where to place it within the slate of films.
Gotham City Sirens

A film based on the Gotham City Sirens, a team consisting of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy, was announced to be in development in December 2016. David Ayer signed on as director/co-producer from a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Margot Robbie will reprise her role from Suicide Squad and take the role of an executive producer, while Geoff Johns and Jon Berg will produce. Production was originally scheduled to begin in mid-2017, but following the restructuring of DC Films leadership the film's development was placed on hold in favor of Birds of Prey. In August 2017, Jared Leto was confirmed to reprise his role as the Joker. Despite a busy production schedule on other projects, Ayer has continued to work on the film, meeting with Gotham City Sirens creator Paul Dini in August 2018.
Deadshot
Tumblr media
In December 2016, The Hollywood Reporter noted that a film centered around Deadshot was in development. By September 2018, Will Smith confirmed he would reprise his role from Suicide Squad and that the story is in development.
Nightwing
Tumblr media
On February 23, 2017, it was reported that Warner Bros. Pictures was developing a Nightwing live action movie centered on the character, set in the DC Extended Universe, with Bill Dubuque writing the script and The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay signed on to direct the movie.
Discussing why he likes the character and signed on for the project, McKay cited the character's showman personality and background as an entertainer and expressed his excitement for depicting that in the film. He later stated that he wants to introduce a complete adaptation of the character, something that hasn't been done in previous film interpretations of him before. McKay continued to state that the director-driven approach is why he loves Warner Bros., and how the franchise is differentiating itself from other popular shared universes. In an interview with Cinemablend, McKay confirmed that the film would acknowledge the titular character's past from the source material, including his time as a part of Haly's Circus, and also reaffirmed that the film will be a straightforward action movie with minimal use of CGI special effects and grounded realism.
In February 2018, McKay stated the script was nearing its final draft.
Batgirl
Tumblr media
In March 2017, it was announced that Joss Whedon was in talks to write, direct and produce a Batgirl film as part of the DC Extended Universe. The film will feature the Barbara Gordon incarnation of the character, with The New 52 comics by Gail Simone serving as "a starting point" for the film. In April 2017, Whedon stated that he was fascinated by a character that chooses to be a vigilante, even though she hadn't suffered any tragedies in her life like Batman, and that the damaged aspect of the character will be explored in the film. In July, Geoff Johns stated production on the film would begin in 2018. At San Diego Comic Con 2017, the title was announced to be Batgirl.
Whedon was to begin production on the film in 2018, but stepped down in February 2018. In April 2018, after impressing the studio with her work on Birds of Prey, Christina Hodson was hired as screenwriter for Batgirl as well. The studio is actively looking for a female director.

In October 2017, TheWrap reported a film centered around Deathstroke was in development, with Gareth Evans attached as screenwriter and director and Joe Manganiello set to reprise his role from Justice League. Ben Affleck released test footage with Manganiello in costume in August 2016. Warner Bros. greenlit the film after Evans impressed executives with his story pitch, which he described as dark and unforgiving, similar to Korean noir films. However, in October 2018, Evans stated that he is yet to be attached to the project contractually.
New Gods
Tumblr media
By March 2018, a film about the New Gods was confirmed to be in development, with Ava DuVernay signed on as director. Kario Salem was hired as screenwriter after working on a story treatment with DuVernay.

Second Critical Commentary Draft
Abstract:
P1: Musical context is a large inspiration towards many personal design ideas and styles. The flow and influence of music can often mould the way that design pieces are crafted. Aspects that involved musical structure and reasoning spark the more authentic flows of creativity. Design formats such as album cover, musical posters, and film intros and sequences, have the most significance in creating a quality context within the design ideas that I am beginning to grow. The impact that the music industry has on not only the world of communication design but also the way in which society perceives certain civil topics. Studies have shown that even a faux CD album cover can have an immediate impact on how the person will choose to perceive the music. (Venkatesan, T, 2020). Whilst the studies show that these impacts are only dependant on the preconceived notions in what people already know they like and don’t like. So although album covers will only have an impact on their targeted audience, they can still sway the way that those individuals perceive the music. This is also evident in the sales of Blue Note records. In particular, Reid Miles had a way of designing covers that spoke to people before the music even got a chance to. There was a gap in the musical design industry and Miles was able to pave the way in which he saw fit. People would often find the art more compelling than the actual music, and thanks to the introduction for the 12” LP, there was a surge of jazz music sales in the eighties (Marsh, G., & Callingham, G., 1997). Felix Cromey in ‘The Cover Art of Blue Note Records.’ Writes; “Miles made the cover sound like it knew what it lay in store for the listener”. This automatic connection between designer and consumer is what begins to spark curiosity in the realm of what is next in the future of musical communication design.
P2: A key method that is important to the further development of my design style is using the pullback technique. The pullback technique is in which you use a cropped image in a way that leads the eye. This also goes in hand with method two of using the page as a playground for typography.
“The pullback shows you the whole image and it shows you an insight into the eye of the designer.” (Caswell, E., 2019).
The pullback method targets the use of photography within designs, meaning it would work for content with photography, and the use of something else. A method that focuses on a small snippet of a concept that eludes to a much bigger idea, working with quality within simplicity. This method doesn’t necessarily isolate the use of photography as a final product, but it would be used as a tool towards the end result. For example, using illustration as a final medium, but only by using a photographed pullback method for reference/as a guide for composition layout. This visual style leaves a lot up to creative interpretation, but still enough to generate unique pieces from multiple concepts that the average person wouldn’t have zeroed in on, and taken a different perspective.
In the future, using this method would rely on image-based designs to create the guide for compositions or layout. It’s important to the development of my personal design style is the concept of understanding that multiple different visual aspects could be warped, changed, and constantly moving before you realize what works for the tone of a certain artwork. The same amount of time and effort that the artist went into making the entire album also went into the designer creating the visual language that the artwork speaks on a shelf.
Another context that I feel begins to surround all of the methods and contexts discussed is the impact in which design can have on entire genres of music, and from that the way is pursuays a more accpecting lifestyle. When a Blue Note abum would be released peoples first instict would be to see what it looked like, not what it sounded like. At the time (1950s-1970s), a lot of civil rights movements were taking place, and the racial and sexist tensions that were brought to the surface were spoken about through the use of exclusivity within media. Particularly in the music industry, it was considerded a large outlet for people to feel freedom and inclusivity. Especially because of the introduction into music where minorities, particulaly african americans, thrived and began to become households for their records. The musical context brought people together, and these transitions into a more diverse range of people were smooth in the music industry. The fifties and sixities were a new beginning, for music design and all kinds of people . These playful album covers that Miles created were fresh and exciting. A change that refreshed the publics eye on the normality. Not only was music different from then onwards, but also the way music and musicians were percieved in the music industry. The bold photography and playful typography was like a breath of fresh air for what the music industry was and how wpeople communicated with it.
Method Two consists of using typography as a playground within the context. For example, Reid Miles’ album cover for Una Mas, consisting of Kenny Dorham looking as though he is holding the title of the album. What started as an image of a man trying to clarify music to his band members turned into the skilfully crafted image of him holding the album in his hands. Though it was not the original intention when the photo was taken, Miles was able to twist it into a visually created metaphor. Miles often uses this method as a final step to creating his album covers. Creating image composition and layout before bringing in the text seems to have the most effect on the space in the image. Having a combination of both creates a well-balanced composition using a linear process of image and then text instead of developing both together.
This method is important to my developing design style because of its playfulness and exciting nature to not only create and enjoy the process but also seeing how viewers react and connect to the imagery. Treating typography as a tool to create images rather than seeing it only as a necessary feature. Although that text is important and needs to be on the page, when it’s treated as an aesthetic tool rather than just a functional aspect creates a stronger connection between viewer and design.

How Food Trucks Endured and Succeeded During the Pandemic This article is part of Owning the Future, a series on how small businesses across the country have been effected by the pandemic. The Covid pandemic hit California hard. It has seen well over 3.5 million cases and over 60,000 deaths. Scores of businesses have closed. But for Ana Jimenez the owner of Tacos El Jerry, a small fleet of food trucks in Santa Cruz County, it provided an opportunity to bring her business into the 21st century. Ms. Jimenez’s four trucks began taking orders through an app and a website, delivering directly to customers, and cultivating a customer base through a new social media presence. All of that added up to a significant increase in sales. “Our business grew,” said Ms. Jimenez, 50. “We even added a new truck. Credit goes to my son, Jerry, who is 23. We didn’t have anything on social media. He said, ‘we’re going digital on all of this, Mom.’” Half of her orders are now placed online, she said. Ms. Jimenez’s son created Facebook and Instagram pages for the food trucks, a social media advertising campaign and began accepting credit card purchases. “Each truck is now serving around 300 people per day, which translates to roughly $5,000 in sales daily,” Ms. Jimenez said. Food trucks — kitchens on wheels, essentially — are flexible by design and quickly became a substitute during the pandemic for customers who couldn’t dine indoors and coveted something different than their mainstream carryout options. That, in turn, has delivered a new client base to add on to an existing cadre of loyal followers. In a very real sense, food trucks are vehicles for equality in the post-pandemic world. “While the pandemic has certainly hurt the majority of small businesses, it has also pushed many to be more innovative by looking for new revenue streams and ways to reach customers,” said Kimberly A. Eddleston, a professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at Northeastern University. Like Ms. Jimenez, some businesses have “focused on ways to maintain their customer base by, for example, delivering products directly to customers,” Prof. Eddleston said. “While others have created products and services that attract new customers.” Luke Cypher, 34, for instance, expanded the already eclectic selections at his Blue Sparrow food trucks in Pittsburgh, adding pizza, four-packs of local beer, gift cards and five-ounce bottles of housemade hot sauce. Mr. Cypher’s main fare since he hit the streets in 2016 has been global street food. His menu carries a heavy Asian inspiration. There’s made-from-scratch kimchi on the menu daily. Dishes can include rice bowls, Vietnamese banh mi, falafel burritos, and a burger made with a ramen bun. During the pandemic, Mr. Cypher’s business took a hit when 24 festivals and over a dozen weddings where he was booked were canceled. “I switched gears to keep things as lean as possible,” Mr. Cypher said. He temporarily shut down a second food truck — a retrofitted 35-foot, 1956 Greyhound bus that he used for the big parties — and introduced a website to interact with his customers and an online ordering system for his smaller truck, which he usually parked at a neighborhood brewery. “I switched the menu to focus on soups, noodles, burritos and pressed sandwiches, so that the things that we were handing our customers would make it home and still be a good experience after they opened up the bag and took it out,” he said. Today in Business Updated  May 21, 2021, 3:55 p.m. ET And he began to make and sell pizza one day a week at the kitchen where he used to do his prep work for the trucks before the pandemic. (The pizza, too, has an international flair: a banh mi pie, for example, made with pork or tofu, miso garlic sauce, mozzarella, pickled carrots, cucumbers, and cilantro.) Customers can order and pay online or by phone and schedule a time to pick up; they receive a text or an email when their order is ready. The kitchen “was already in place, so we turned around and said, well, what can we offer our customers in this unknown time that would be comforting,” Mr. Cypher said. “We had a wood-fired oven there that we use for bread baking, but basically it wasn’t being utilized.” Before the pandemic, Mr. Cypher was serving roughly 1,500 customers a week from his food truck. A weekly festival on weekends, with 5,000 people stopping by the bus, of course, ramped up that number. “The cool part is I was able to stay afloat because, unlike a restaurant with traditional seating, it was just myself, my sous-chef and his wife, who worked part-time,” he said. “We ended up serving roughly a hundred people a day, four or five days a week. So it wasn’t the numbers that we did before, but our lights were able to stay on because we had reduced a lot of costs that we had involved in running multiple rigs.” Mr. Cypher, however, opted not to use delivery apps like Uber Eats or Grub Hub. “I don’t want to hand my food off to somebody else,” he said. “If we weren’t going to have the one-on-one conversations with our customers, we were at least going to give it to them directly.” And like Tacos El Jerry, social media became a huge part of his marketing platform. “The pictures that we take and post on Instagram and Facebook let people feel like they’re a part of our truck family,” Mr. Cypher said. “Food trucks were well-equipped to withstand pandemic restrictions, as they’re naturally to-go and socially distanced businesses,” said Luz Urrutia, chief executive of Accion Opportunity Fund, a nonprofit organization providing small-business owners with access to capital, networks and coaching. “Many food truck owners stepped forward to seize opportunity during a time of great uncertainty,” she said. As Pittsburgh emerges from the pandemic, Mr. Cypher is adding a twist at his kitchen location. “We have licensing to offer beer on draft from our local breweries, so we’re going to have a small beer garden,” he said. “And that’s a revenue stream that we’re going to kind of lean into that we probably never would have done if not for Covid.” In 2020, Mr. Cypher’s food trucks had $200,000 in gross sales, down about 40 percent from the previous year, he said. “But with the new offerings, more efficiency and only running one rig, we were actually able to net enough to keep the business moving forward,” he said. “This year we’re already up about 30 percent from where we were at last year at this time.” For Ronicca Whaley, the chef behind the St. Petersburg, Fla.-based truck Shiso Crispy, timing was much tricker: she opened her first truck in November 2019, just a few months before the pandemic. And yet Ms. Whaley, 35, who offers handmade gyozas, bao buns and their signature dish, dirty rice, now has two trucks because of a strategy of regularly parking in certain neighborhoods and offering discounted and free meals outside a nearby Ronald McDonald House. (She added the second truck in January.) One challenge: “The internet here is shoddy. And cellphone service in different areas out here just doesn’t work,” she said. “During the height of the pandemic, I was consistently losing two or more transactions at my point of sale every shift.” Luckily, she was offered a special initiative for small business owners by Verizon Business: a year of complimentary connectivity and a 5G iPhone, as well as tools such as the Clover Flex point of sale program for touchless transactions. “It has digitally transformed my business,” Ms. Whaley said. She also signed on to an app, called Best Food Trucks, that allows customers near her to pre-order once they know her location for the day. “The inextricably connected stories of food trucks and Covid are a perfect microcosm of the undeniable reality that women, immigrants and people of color, historically relegated to the edges of the economy, are actually the foundation upon which the next economy must be built,” said Nathalie Molina Niño, author of “Leapfrog: The New Revolution for Women Entrepreneurs.” But the silver lining from the pandemic for some operators is more personal — including bringing families together. “I have a ton of wisdom about how to operate food trucks and cooking,” Ms. Jimenez said. “It’s the coming together of the generations that made the business stronger now and for the future.” Source link Orbem News #Endured #Food #Pandemic #Succeeded #trucks

Asia Pacific Electric 3-Wheeler Market by End-use (Passenger & Load), Range (Upto 50 Miles & Above 50 Miles), Battery type (Lead Acid & Lithium ion), Battery Capacity (Below 3kWh, 3kWh-6kWh, Above 6kWh), Motor Power and Country - Forecast to 2026
“Growing demand for efficient as well as ecofriendly vehicle for short distance commuting is driving the market of electric three-wheeler”
Asia Pacific electric three-wheeler market is estimated to be 156,397 units in 2021 and is projected to grow to 486,446 units by 2026, at a CAGR of 25.5% during the forecast period.  Electric three-wheelers run on the electrical energy stored in the rechargeable battery unit. These battery units can either be charged through an external power source or can be swapped with a charged one. Electric three-wheelers are more efficient and ecofriendly than conventional ICE three-wheelers.
With the increasing stringency of government mandates, the focus of three-wheeler manufacturers has shifted to efficiency, emission-free propulsion, innovative technologies, and revised environmental standards. The increasing adoption of electric three-wheelers and improved charging infrastructure (in terms of network and capacity) in countries will change the market scenario in the coming years.
The recent developments in the electric three-wheeler market have introduced batteries with improved specifications that are said to be at the heart of any electric three-wheeler. These advancements in batteries are expected to increase the performance and range of electric vehicles. The range is one of the most important reasons that users are still a bit hesitant to prefer electric three-wheelers over ICE three-wheelers. However, government bodies are working with manufacturers to provide the necessary charging infrastructure network. Because of all these benefits, electric three-wheelers are the future of the automotive industry.
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the electric three-wheeler market. Both the production and sales of new electric three-wheeler came to a halt as the whole ecosystem got disrupted. OEMs had to wait until lockdowns were lifted to resume production, which affected their business. Post the pandemic, the demand for new electric three-wheeler is expected to show an increase as economies are recovering steadily. Nevertheless, another wave of COVID-19 due to newer strains may hamper the recovery in some countries. Subsequently, electric three-wheeler manufacturers would need to adjust the production volume based on the COVID-19 scenario across different countries. In addition, component manufacturing too was suspended, and small Tier II and Tier III manufacturers are facing face liquidity issues. Thus, production suspension during the outbreak and lower demand post the pandemic might have an unprecedented impact on electric three-wheeler providers.
“GROWING ADOPTION OF EECTRIC THREE-WHEELER BY LOGISTICS COMPANIES TO DRIVE THE MARKET”
Various retail, logistics, and courier companies have already started adopting electric three-wheelers on a small scale. With advancements in technology and the development of more vehicles, the adoption rate of electric three-wheeler load carriers will grow exponentially. For instance, in February 2021, Flipkart announced that it is planning to deploy 25,000 electric vehicles by 2030 in line with its aim to transition its entire logistics fleet across cities to green energy vehicles. Flipkart’s EV fleet will comprise two-, three-, and four-wheeler vehicles designed and assembled in India. The company has partnered with prominent electric three-wheeler manufacturers like Mahindra Electric and Piaggio to make customized vehicles. Also, in February 2021, Amazon India and Mahindra Electric announced a partnership under which the ecommerce company deployed the latter’s electric three-wheeler in its delivery network as part of a commitment toward strengthening electric mobility in the country.
Although electric three-wheelers have been predominantly successful in short-distance passenger applications so far, these are now being seen as promising transportation modes for last-mile load delivery as well. Several startups are entering the market to provide customized electric three-wheeler load carrier solutions. This is further driving the growth of the segment. In August 2019, Euler Motors, a Delhi-based automotive tech startup, launched an electric three-wheeler load carrier, targeting fleet operators working for ecommerce companies. The company has already set out a fleet of some 140 prototype electric three-wheeler delivery vehicles that are on trial runs for over a year in the operations of companies like BigBasket, Blue Dart, Ecom Express, and Udaan.
The supply chain industry is constantly transforming by adopting green technology for transportation. An increased need for efficiency, differentiated routes to market, access to new geographies, and acceptance of digital supply chain solutions are transforming the supply chain. With transformations in the supply chain, the demand for specialized and customized electric three-wheelers is growing. For instance, in 2021, Omega Seiki Mobility launched an electric three-wheeler with a refrigerated carriage purposely designed for pharmaceuticals and food delivery. The company also aims to assist in the COVID-19 vaccine drive by providing vehicles for last-mile delivery. Transportation of refrigerated goods will have significant growth in coming years, especially in Asia Pacific. Goods such as fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, confectionery, and pharmaceuticals require delicate transportation under certain controlled temperatures. This is estimated to drive demand for electric three-wheeler refrigerated load carriers over the estimated period
“Last-mile delivery to boost the market of Electric three-wheeler in India”
The market for electric three-wheelers in India is the largest in Asia Pacific and is expected to witness high growth in the long term. India is amongst the top consumers of electric three-wheelers. The low emission vehicle industry in India is developing rapidly with the support of the government and manufacturers such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Atul Auto, Piaggio, and Lohia Auto. India is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases and has pledged to reduce emissions from petrol and diesel cars during the next few decades. This initiative by the Indian government is expected to lead to significant demand for electric three-wheelers in the country. The government of India has announced various plans to support the development of electric three-wheeler infrastructure. For instance, the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and EV (FAME) II Scheme, effective from April 2019, has an outlay of USD 1.4 billion to be used for upfront incentives on the purchase of EVs (USD 1.19 billion) and for supporting the deployment of charging infrastructure (USD 1.9 million). This phase aims to generate demand by supporting 0.5 million electric three-wheelers.
Government policies have encouraged private logistics companies to adopt electric three-wheelers. The motivation for adoption is mostly to reduce carbon footprint. The shift to electric three-wheelers is also in line with the Government of India’s commitment to reduce carbon footprint, which encourages fuel-based three-wheelers to be replaced with electrically powered vehicles. According to industry experts, the addition of electric vehicles will help cut down last-mile delivery costs by up to 50% and carbon footprint by more than 40%.
Large logistics spaces, mainly for lease, are growing rapidly in India. The drivers of growth for logistics, supply chain, and warehousing include the demand from third-party logistics operators and ecommerce companies. This is fuelling the demand for electric three-wheelers in intracity transportation.
“Favourable government policies in Bangladesh to drive the market”
Electric three-wheelers are popularly known as easy-bikes and Tom-Toms in some districts of Bangladesh. They have been in use in the country since 2004 and become one of the most widely used means of transportation for the masses in both urban and rural areas. The country is significantly focused on the adoption of electric vehicles. The government is rolling out policies to increase the penetration of electric vehicles, which, in turn, will drive the electric three-wheeler market. In 2020, the government drafted an industrial policy to try and attract electric vehicle production lines and even solar-powered electric-vehicles to the country.
Electric three-wheelers are increasingly replacing ICE three-wheelers in Bangladesh. Conventional three-wheeler is widely used in the country for short distance commuting. Comfort, lower travel cost than conventional three-wheelers, and no harmful effects on the environment are the prominent drivers of electric three-wheeler adoption in the country. The adoption of electric three-wheelers is expected to increase the physical and social mobility of ordinary people. Merits of electric three-wheelers as an easy and comfortable means of transportation and suitable government policies are propelling the growth of the market in the country. Automobile Industry Development Policy-2020 focuses on electric vehicles (EVs). The Bangladeshi government is preparing an auto industry policy that will call for at least 15% of registered vehicles to be powered by electricity by 2030.

Why These C.E.O.s Got Paid More in the Pandemic Pandemic pay packages The Times’s David Gelles gives DealBook the backstory to his recent front-page article about rising C.E.O. pay during the pandemic. Companies battered by the pandemic are handing out enormous pay packages to their C.E.O.s, highlighting the sharp divides in a nation on the precipice of an economic boom, but still wracked by steep income inequality. Executive compensation has, of course, been soaring for decades now. Chief executives of big companies in the U.S. now make, on average, 320 times as much as the typical worker. In 1989, that ratio was 61 to 1. In years when the profits are flowing and unemployment is low, such disparities are often explained away. But in this pandemic year, corporate P.R. teams are bending over backward to justify their bosses’ big paydays. When I reached out to the companies mentioned in my article for comment, they responded with infographics, statements from board members and urgent requests for off-the-record phone calls. Here are three of the common tactics they employed: Don’t believe your eyes: A Hilton spokesman stressed that the figure in its latest proxy filing did not represent take-home pay for Chris Nassetta, because the company restructured several stock awards. “Said directly, Chris did not take home $55.9 million in 2020,” the spokesman said. “Chris’s actual pay was closer to $20.1 million.” Hilton lost $720 million last year. An AT&T spokesman emphasized that while John Stankey was awarded compensation worth some $21 million, that wasn’t what he was “paid,” noting that this includes stock awards that may not be realized. Stankey’s actual take-home pay, the spokesman added, was closer to $10.4 million. AT&T lost $5.4 billion last year. It could’ve been even more: Boeing wanted to make clear how much money Dave Calhoun “voluntarily elected to forgo to support the company through the Covid-19 pandemic” — some $3.6 million, according to a spokesman. Nonetheless, Calhoun was awarded $21.1 million last year, while Boeing lost $12 billion. Disney stressed that “the impact of the pandemic on our businesses led to a meaningful reduction” in executive pay, noting that executive chairman Bob Iger, who was awarded $21 million last fiscal year, gave up his salary for much of that time. Disney lost $2.8 billion in the period. The great man theory: Starbucks, which awarded Kevin Johnson $14.7 million, was among many companies making the case that their C.E.O. was essential to future success. “Continuity in Kevin’s role is particularly vital to Starbucks at this time,” said Mary Dillon, a member of the compensation committee. The company made a $930 million profit in its latest fiscal year, down three-quarters from the previous year. And General Electric sent a 487-word defense of the $73.2 million package awarded to Larry Culp, arguing that he was uniquely equipped to revive the ailing industrial conglomerate. “The board sees Larry Culp as essential to G.E.’s transformation,” a company spokesman said. The company turned a $5.2 billion profit last year, helped by restructuring measures that included reducing headcount by more than 20,000. Read the full story here. HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING A deep split in pandemic fortunes highlights an uneven global recovery. On one hand: The E.U. could let vaccinated Americans visit this summer, bringing much-needed tourism revenue to the region. (One potential hangup is a rising number of people who aren’t getting their second doses.) On the other: India will receive emergency medical supplies from the U.S. as it reports half of all new Covid-19 cases worldwide. Netflix had a big night at the Oscars. The streaming company won seven Academy Awards last night, the most of any studio, but again fell short in its quest to win Best Picture. (That went to Disney, whose Searchlight Pictures’ “Nomadland” won the big prize; Disney won five awards over all.) AT&T’s Warner Bros. won three Oscars, while Amazon took home two. An activist investor steps up its challenge at Exxon Mobil. Engine No. 1 argues in a new presentation that the oil giant faces an “existential business risk” because it is not taking bolder steps to move away from fossil fuels, The Financial Times reports. (Exxon and other major producers are set to report earnings this week.) A group of 30 big companies launches an initiative to hire ex-convicts. About 70 million American adults have a criminal record, complicating their ability to get work and entrenching poverty. “Business has an important role to play in making it easier for people with criminal backgrounds to get back on their feet,” said JPMorgan Chase’s Jamie Dimon, a co-chair of the Second Chance Business Coalition, which was announced today. Elon Musk is hosting “S.N.L.” Yes, really. The Tesla chief is scheduled to host “Saturday Night Live” on May 8. (We bet S.E.C. officials will be watching.) John Authers of Bloomberg Opinion has an interesting take on it: The Tesla chief’s antics are doing more to encourage adoption of green technology than any amount of environmentalist scolding. The ‘massive threat’ in a ‘measly’ Supreme Court case Today the Supreme Court will hear a case that could upend American politics. It has largely escaped attention because it’s not obviously political at all. “Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Rodriquez” involves a fight over California’s donor disclosure requirements for charities and “may seem like a measly spat over state nonprofit rules,” Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, told DealBook. “But a massive threat lurks within.” Today in Business Updated  April 23, 2021, 1:31 p.m. ET Nonprofits want more donor anonymity. Americans for Prosperity Foundation is a “social welfare” nonprofit arguing that the right to anonymous assembly guaranteed by the First Amendment extends to donor data. Critics say that a ruling in favor of the Koch-funded charity would allow more untraceable money to flow through groups designed to mask the outsize role that a few wealthy players have in American politics. If A.F.P.F. wins, “special interests will have a free pass to rig our democracy from behind a veil of secrecy,” Whitehouse said. Companies secretly influence politics with “dark money” donations that are deliberately opaque. Basically, some “social welfare” groups are quasi-political yet don’t have the same reporting requirements as explicitly political groups. Similarly, trade groups take corporate donations and pass them on, obscuring the sources. “The importance of dark money in society, the scope of it, is something people don’t really grasp, but it impacts everyday life,” said Anna Massoglia, a researcher at the Center for Responsive Politics. A decision is expected around late June. Notably, the court took the case on Jan. 8, two days after the Capitol riot prompted a reckoning over corporate political donations. Both the Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers filed briefs supporting A.F.P.F.’s case for anonymity, and Allen Dickerson, a former member of the Federal Election Commission, argued the same in a Wall Street Journal op-ed yesterday. “What a gift she’s given them by this crazy way of giving.” — Marti DeLiema, a professor of social work at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, on how the billionaire MacKenzie Scott’s unorthodox method of philanthropy — emailing groups out of the blue — has created a cottage industry of scammers. Bain is buying $1 billion worth of desserts Bain Capital Private Equity is buying Dessert Holdings in a deal that DealBook hears values the company at about $1 billion. Dessert Holdings makes “Insta-worthy” cheesecakes and other desserts through three brands: The Original Cakerie, Lawler’s Desserts and Atlanta Cheesecake. The company, which sells to retailers and restaurants, was created through acquisitions led by its prior owner, Gryphon Investors. The dessert conglomerate emphasizes the “wow factor” of products like tuxedo truffle mousse cake that are made to look good on social media. A sweet deal? In-store bakeries have held up well during the pandemic, while restaurants are expected to rebound post-Covid. There could be more consolidation in the industry, with George Weston announcing in March it plans to put its bakery business — which includes Wonder Bread in Canada — up for sale. Over the years, Bain has invested in a number of food service and restaurant brands, like Dunkin’ and Domino’s Pizza. It plans to develop “new and innovative products” as well as pursue more acquisitions after the Dessert Holdings deal, said Adam Nebesar, a managing director at the private equity firm. Trevor Lawrence is getting paid in Bitcoin As cryptocurrency goes more mainstream — thanks in part to the recent public listing of Coinbase — blockchain businesses are hustling for brand recognition. “We’re really trying to get our name out a lot,” said Sam Bankman-Fried, the C.E.O. of FTX, a crypto exchange that competes with Coinbase. One of FTX’s companies, the investment app Blockfolio, has signed an endorsement deal with Trevor Lawrence, the former Clemson quarterback and presumptive number-one pick in this week’s N.F.L. draft, DealBook is first to report. The quarterback’s first payment was made exclusively in crypto tokens transferred directly into his Blockfolio account. “Trevor was excited about crypto,” Bankman-Fried said. “That’s what drew us to him.” The company wouldn’t disclose the terms of the multiyear agreement, but a spokesman noted that the “signing bonus” was already worth more on Sunday than when it was deposited on Friday night. Future payments will be made in whatever combination of dollars and crypto Lawrence chooses. “Crypto is on a lot of people’s minds,” Bankman-Fried told DealBook. The 29-year-old billionaire founded FTX in 2019, and said he regrets spending his early years “playing video games.” Now, he’s trying to make up for lost time and the “low name recognition” of his crypto brands by hitching their wagon to bigger brands. FTX recently agreed to pay $135 million for the naming rights to the N.B.A.’s Miami Heat arena for 19 years. THE SPEED READ Deals ByteDance, the Chinese parent of TikTok, has reportedly delayed plans to go public because it hasn’t devised a corporate structure that would win approval from Washington and Beijing. (South China Morning Post) A close look at the efforts by the Carlyle Group’s C.E.O., Kewsong Lee, to catch up to his private equity rivals. (WSJ) Politics and policy The law firm Jones Day has rehired at least seven lawyers who worked in the Trump administration, cementing its status as a top outpost for Republican legal experts. (FT) Advisers to wealthy Americans are studying various strategies to minimize the hit from the Biden administration’s proposed tax hikes. (Bloomberg) Tech Ant Group, the Chinese fintech giant, reportedly plans to offer employees zero-interest loans backed by their stock options to bolster morale. (Bloomberg) The culture of Travis Kalanick’s food-delivery start-up, CloudKitchens, is said to closely resemble the “bro-y” early days of Uber — and it’s losing workers as a result. KEELEY: MARINERS ANNOUNCE END OF SEASON AWARDS
Tumblr media
Wallin, Ronning, Fox, Hart, and Culkin recognized  BY: Michael Keeley, Maine Mariners PORTLAND, ME – April 23, 2020 – Mariners Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Riley Armstrong announced the end of season team awards on Thursday. Forwards Terrence Wallin, Ty Ronning, Dillan Fox, Ted Hart, and defenseman Ryan Culkin were all recognized for their achievements in the 2019-20 season. The “Community Leader” Award went to Terrence Wallin. The second-year alternate captain put in 12 hours of community service in 2019-20, the most of anyone on the team. He participated in events such as the South Portland Fire and Police Community Open House, volunteering at the South Portland Food Cupboard, and participating in the Aroma Joe’s Community Skate. Wallin also runs “Evolution Hockey,” which puts on camps for youth hockey players and has launched a computer-based “Quarantine Classroom,” during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although he’s a native of Pennsylvania, Wallin has Maine roots in Kennebunk, which he called home for many years. “Terrence has devoted himself to the community in Portland,” said Armstrong “He continues doing work even now with his zoom hockey skills to help develop and grow the game in Maine.” The “Most Improved Player” award went to Ty Ronning, who saw his season similarly split between Maine and the Hartford Wolf Pack for the second year in a row. The 2016 draft pick of the New York Rangers posted 11 goals and 13 assists in his 28 games as a Mariner in 2019-20. “The way Ty approached this season on being sent to Maine was a 180 from last season,” said Armstrong. “His maturity level both on and off the ice was eye-opening for me. The way he played in Maine, he really deserved to be up in Hartford.” Ronning got a pair of call ups to the Wolf Pack – first on October 24th, 2019, and again on February 3rd, 2020, after which he stayed in the AHL for the remainder of the season. With the Mariners in 2019-20, Ronning had three multi-goal games, highlighted by his second career hat trick on January 24th, 2020 in an 8-1 home win against the Worcester Railers. Ronning will forever hold legendary status in Mariners history for his five-point ECHL debut on November 24th, 2018 vs. Manchester, still a single-game franchise record. The team’s “Unsung Hero” was Dillan Fox for the second year in a row. Fox was tied for the team lead in goals with 23, and power play goals with five. He has also become the franchise’s career leader in both categories through its first two seasons. Fox played in 59 games for the Mariners in 2019-20, second to Michael McNicholas’ 60. “Dillan pretty much put the team on his back at the start of the year scoring some big goals and breaking the 20 goal plateau,” said Armstrong. His blazing start to 2019-20 was marked by six goals in the first six games of the season. Fox initially joined the Mariners on a loan from the SPHL in January 2019 and made a name for himself by scoring 16 goals in 37 games for Maine in the inaugural season. This past season, he had nine multi-point games for the Mariners including a four-point performance on November 22nd at Norfolk. On December 28th, 2019, Fox was loaned to Hartford and made his AHL debut by dressing in two games for the Wolf Pack. Ted Hart was named “Rookie of the Year.” The Cumberland native officially became the first Maine-born Mariner on November 9th, 2019 when he made his ECHL debut in a 5-1 win over the Adirondack Thunder. Hart scored his first ECHL on November 20th at Norfolk and finished the season with 10 goals and eight assists in 48 games. Hart was initially cut from the team after training camp, but put up six points in five games with the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Peoria Rivermen, and stuck with the Mariners for the rest of the season after his November recall. “Once he came back to Maine from the SPHL, he showed that he can play in this league,” said Armstrong. “I can see Ted scoring 30 goals if he puts the work in the summer.” Hart, 24, is a former two-time Maine state champion for Greely High School and played four seasons of NCAA Division I hockey for Yale University before turning pro this past season. Armstrong named co-MVPs for 2019-20. Wallin and defenseman Ryan Culkin share the honor. “Terrence was our most consistent player throughout the course of the year making a big impact in every game that he played in,” said Armstrong. “Ryan was a big part of the D-core even though he only played half the season for us. He played in all key areas and big minutes.” Wallin finished second on the team with 43 points, and tied Fox for the goals lead, with 23. That mark was a career-high in his fifth pro season, and he was seven points shy of his career-high in points, with 10 games canceled due to COVID-19. To illustrate his consistency, Wallin had just one span of more than two games without a point in the entire 2019-20 season. He registered his first career hat trick on January 3rd, 2020 against the Jacksonville Icemen. Culkin, also a second-year Mariner, was remarkably productive offensively from the blue line. His 33 points in 45 games were by far the most by a Mariners defenseman (13 more than the next highest: Sean Day), and also good for fifth on the team overall. Under contract with the AHL’s Laval Rocket, Culkin was recalled in late November and again – for good, in mid-February. Like Fox, Culkin had a four-point game on November 22nd in Norfolk, highlighting his season. Maine Mariners Award History: Community Leader 2018-19: Louie Rowe 2019-20: Terrence Wallin Most Improved Player 2018-19: Dwyer Tschantz 2019-20: Ty Ronning Unsung Hero 2018-19: Dillan Fox 2019-20: Dillan Fox Rookie of the Year 2018-19: Michael McNicholas 2019-20: Ted Hart Most Valuable Player 2018-19: Greg Chase 2019-20: Terrence Wallin/Ryan Culkin The Mariners are supporting local COVID-19 relief efforts in a number of ways. “HOME” t-shirts are on sale through Friday, April 24th at the online merchandise store, with net proceeds benefitting the United Way of Greater Portland and other local COVID-19 relief funds. Local school districts and other non-profits are also being supported by the Mariners by way of an exclusive specialty jersey auction through Handbid, which runs through May 1st. Additionally, the Mariners have partnered with Evergreen Credit Union, the Portland Sea Dogs, and the Maine Red Claws to support the Good Shepherd Food Bank in a virtual food drive at Fans4Food.com. 20 for 20: The Year Ahead
RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS BUSINESS/LAW/TECH/PHILANTHROPY PREDICTIONS
with Jacob Aere
Here are Rick Horrow’s 20 top happenings and predictions for the busy sports business year ahead. Enjoy, and Happy New Year!
The XFL is on its way as a serious competitor for professional football. After an unsuccessful XFL launch in 2001, WWE chairman Vince McMahon is making his second attempt to build a successful professional football league that will launch on February 8, 2020. According To Bleacher Report, this time around a slow and steady buildup has led to the creation of eight teams across the United States. Unlike the NFL, a focus will be put on a quicker-paced game as well as incorporating betting into normal football action. XFL CEO Oliver Luck noted that the league will not market itself using big names but instead plans to be a place to springboard names into the NFL, almost as stage upon which to showcase talent to the more established football league. There are 40 million people who crave more football after the Super Bowl, and if the XFL can find a younger age demographic than the ill-fated AAF, they will find success, as their price point of roughly $30-$40 for a pro football game is highly competitive, especially for younger, less affluent consumers.
The Raiders, Chargers, and Rams will see new homes with the opening of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and SoFi Stadium in L.A. The Raiders’ new stadium comes with a change of scenery as the longtime Oakland franchise is moving out to Las Vegas and into the reported $2 billion stadium that aesthetically pays tribute to the “Black Hole,” a name assigned to the group of fans in the most intense section in the team’s previous home. Meanwhile, the Chargers and Rams will share news digs in Los Angeles, where construction is estimated to cost $10 billion including work on the surrounding 298-acre former Hollywood Park footprint. SoFi Stadium will be a beefy 70,000 person venue. By taking a more-than-football approach in Los Angeles, the stadium may find itself being filled by fans who prioritize “being seen” at the city’s new hot spot over on-field action. SoFi will open in July with an added boost from two Taylor Swift shows, which will hopefully drive L.A. consumers to the first new football stadium built in the city in nearly 100 years.
Tokyo 2020 brings six new sports to the Olympics. According to C|Net, the first of the six sports to debut is karate, which fittingly makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo, joining judo, taekwondo, and wrestling. Karate consists of two disciplines for both men and women: kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Skateboarding and surfing will also be joining the Olympic fray, with park and street skateboarding and short board surfing. The other three new sports include sport climbing, which will consist of three disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering; and lead climbing; and baseball and softball make a return to the Olympics after having not been played during the last two summer Games. All of these sports will get a global popularity boost thanks to the influence and amazement of the Olympics.
Olympic ad sales are on pace to shatter their previous record of $1.2 billion. According to AdAge, NBC Sports announced that it has secured $1 billion in American ad sales for its coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, putting it on pace to surpass the record $1.2 billion total it amassed three years ago during the Rio de Janeiro Games. While NBC hasn’t quite eclipsed the high-water mark set in 2016, the network still has eight months left to cut deals before the Olympic torch is lit in Tokyo’s New National Stadium. And more than half of the advertisers are newcomers to the quadrennial event. NBC Sports Group has worked up a single audience guarantee number for advertisers that is agnostic as to whether a particular viewer is watching the Olympics on a traditional TV set or via a streaming platform – meaning digital eyeballs will count toward advertising total reach figures this time around. Additionally, Japan Airlines is giving away 50,000 round-trip tickets ahead of the Tokyo Olympics to encourage international visitors to come out and watch the Games.
Group1001 brings another women’s leadership and STEM-centric event to the LPGA Tour. Three weeks from now, the LPGA and Group1001 will kick off a new official LPGA Tour event in Boca Raton, Florida. The inaugural Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio will be held January 20-26 at Boca Rio Golf Club and feature a 108-player field competing for a $2 million purse. As a key part of tournament week, the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio will host the Women’s Leadership Summit presented by Versant Health with top female leaders from a variety of industries, creating a space to empower women, develop and strengthen skills, build networks, and inspire change. The summit will feature a panel headlined by female business leaders, a fireside chat with an LPGA Tour professional, as well as inspirational stories and presentations from pioneering women. The Boca Raton event is a bookend of sorts to the Group1001-sponsored Indy Women in Tech LPGA tournament held in Indianapolis late summer, which also features multiple educational and networking events for women looking to reengage or advance careers in STEM and business/leadership fields.
Name, Image, and Likeness will dominate collegiate sports conversations in 2020. No matter which Tigers win the CFP National Championship on January 13, regardless of whether a blue chip team or an underdog ignites the Final Four, primary conversations around NCAA events will center on looming Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) legislation in California and 21 other states. The NCAA is under the gun to come up with a policy that’s acceptable to athletes and its member institutions alike before California’s Fair Pay to Play bill takes effect in 2023. On the issue of when an NCAA NIL policy will go into effect, NCAA President Emmert has said that 2021 is the goal, but could be impacted by what happens at the state level, emphasizing that we can’t have a model where multiple states have different rules. Congress and state legislators are now firmly vested in the process as well, looking to preserve the rights of student athletes as well as the Title IX structure and other anti-discrimination measures. Look for Emmert to produce a draft national NIL solution by year end – one that will be intensely debated and breathlessly revised in 2021.
The 2022 Qatar World Cup is forging ahead in the desert, with major milestones within the country and decisions outside of it to come in 2020. According to ESPN, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is less than three years away and the tiny Gulf state has now staged its first-ever major football tournament, having hosted the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup earlier in December, won by Liverpool. There will be an eight stadium rotation within the 2022 World Cup footprint, and Qatar is debuting a new metro system that will link the majority of the eight stadiums along a 46-mile path. Although the country looks to build its hotel industry to host a substantial number of World Cup fans, the number of rooms available at current count will fall well short of the likely 3 million incoming fans. And in 2020, qualifying countries that abhor Qatar’s poor human rights record will have hard philosophical choices to make about sending a national team. Another obstacle to overcome will be the country’s anti-liquor laws, which will push drinking into mainly hotel bars. The country, however, is likely to relax their tough alcohol rules to make the soccer masses happy and the World Cup a financial success.
HSBC Rugby Sevens Series takes a “leap” of faith. After a successful long run in Vegas, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2020 returns to Los Angeles – on Leap Day. The USA Sevens, a key part of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2020, returns to Los Angeles for the 2020 edition of the World Rugby Sevens Series in the United States. World Rugby has confirmed that 2020 will be its biggest season to date. In the year just ending, the Series has seen record-breaking audience engagement figures, with over 198 million video views in 2019. After a decade of action in Las Vegas, U.S. tournament organizers have gambled on a return to the West Coast. Dignity Health Sports Park -- until last weekend the temporary home of the NFL Los Angeles Chargers -- is slated to host the fifth leg of the 2019-2020 World Series, with the U.S. event taking place February 29–March 1, 2020. The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2020 also serves as crucial build-up for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
New Collective Bargaining Agreements are on the horizon for the WNBA and MLS in 2020. The WNBA players’ association is looking for powers that be to “bet on women,” and a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the league and new Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is expected to be announced by January 15. According to Swish Appeal, new provisions would take effect quickly, with free agency expected to begin on time on February 1 with players hoping to get paid more for their efforts. Meanwhile, January 31 is the date that the existing CBA between MLS and the MLS Players Association will expire. The hope is that a new deal will be hashed out, and the now 26-team league will keep growing as according to Forbes, the average valuation of MLS teams has increased by 30% from 2017 to a current average of $313 million. Both the WNBA and MLS have shown strong signs of growth in recent years, and players should expect to reap salary benefits from these positive changes.
Legal U.S. sports gambling and media platforms continue to grow. According to Digiday, sports media will rush to embrace gambling in 2020 in order to boost ad revenues, following the path of ESPN’s popular “Daily Wager” show that launched in 2019. Currently, sports betting is legal in just 11 states, but seven more states are preparing to take the sports betting plunge in the near future. Research published recently by the consultancy Gambling Compliance projects that 40 U.S. states will have legalized sports betting by 2024. That rush of legalization, encompassing an estimated $150 billion industry, is expected to attract the attention of almost every kind of mainstream sports publisher. Over the past year, both Vox Media (with DraftKings) and Bleacher Report (with Caesars Palace) signed long-term deals to create wide varieties of content designed to build interest in sports betting. The potential for multiple income streams from sports betting – via related ads and the bets themselves – will be a cash cow for sports media companies.
Baseball’s new marijuana policy will spark change in NBA and NFL rules. Earlier this month, Major League Baseball and its players’ association announced that the league would drop punishments for positive tests of “substances of abuse” such as marijuana and cocaine, treating those violations the same as alcohol-related situations, with players facing voluntary treatment rather than suspensions and fines. The change in MLB policy could be a short term trigger for similar changes within the NBA and NFL. According to a study done by ESPN last spring, 82% of teams over the four major pro North American sports leagues play in states or provinces where recreational and/or medical marijuana use is legal.  The NFL and NBA put players who test positive in a substance abuse program before fines and suspensions for subsequent positives. The NHL, the pathfinder in this area, recommends treatment for “abnormally high levels” of THC but does not punish players. The NHL and MLB are now treating their athletes more like ordinary people. This will likely give the NFL and NBA precedent to change their respective recreational drug policies.
Bolstered by support from Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, the fate of 42 Minor League Baseball franchises will become a solid rallying point during the 2020 U.S. presidential elections. The current dispute between MLB and MiLB became public in October, when Baseball America reported that MLB had offered a plan to eliminate as many as 42 minor-league teams after the 2020 season, when the Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and MiLB expires. In November, the New York Times released a list of the 42 teams that would be cut. "Suddenly," Sporting News noted, "we knew what towns could potentially lose teams, which communities — some significant to the sport's history — could be without baseball. That made it much more real." Politicians coast to coast have rightfully joined the effort to save grass roots pro baseball at its best. Democratic presidential candidate Sanders has been the loudest voice. He's met with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, and in mid-December, Sanders also met with people representing minor league baseball in Burlington, Iowa. Not coincidentally, that's one of the towns on the elimination list. Expect other presidential would-be hopefuls to join the charge to save the MiLB teams as well.
Zion Williamson will finally play in 2020 and he will have a big impact on the NBA market. According to Forbes, season-ticket sales calls for the New Orleans Pelicans reached historic levels after the team won the NBA lottery with Williamson. But a couple of lawsuits are going to delay many off-court endorsement options. Currently, most of the money being made from Zion's likeness is unlicensed merchandise. All of the different styles of street market shirts, posters, and even rosary candles are not Zion blessed products. Williamson is so good that he’s even reviving the basketball card industry single-handedly and is sure to raise ticket prices when he’s on the road just due to his presence. Williamson will eventually get a huge shoe deal, and will net a huge raise once he hits the NBA open market as a free agent, perhaps becoming even more marketable than LeBron James within the next two years. If LeBron is the NBA’s current most marketable basketball player, Zion is the future.
The Athletic is vying to become a billion dollar sports media company through online subscriptions. According to Awful Announcing, the company is currently valued at over $300 million with a subscriber count north of 600,000. They also have expanded into the UK and are beginning to dabble in video content while still expanding their coverage zone. On the upper end of the spectrum, The Athletic could battle ESPN + as the largest online sports publisher and end up being valued at greater than $1 billion. The Athletic seems to have no rigid beliefs that they have to limit their content to just sports, and are leaving competitors behind as they continue to add award-winning veteran sports journalists to their roster. The Athletic’s deep bench of established writers with loyal fans allows them to grow at their own pace and could showcase an example of thriving journalism in the new decade.
Streaming service Quibi sells out of its $150 million in first-year advertisement inventory. The mobile only streaming service (short for Quick Bites) debuts in April, 2020 and will be a sort of Netflix for the mobile era, where higher-quality content is chopped up into smaller bites. According to The Wrap, Quibi content will only be available on mobile devices, with each episode running no longer than 10 minutes. The app will cost viewers $4.99 per month for ad-supported viewing, or run $7.99 for ad-free viewing when it debuts next spring. On Quibi’s sports content front, ESPN will post a daily sports show on the platform to cover game highlights. ESPN’s daily show will clearly be a pathway for more sports shows in Quibi’s future.
Tech wearables will be even bigger business in pro sports. According to Tech Radar, spending on wearables will hit $51.5 billion next year, with smartwatches leading the pack. Wearable tech is only going to keep growing, and in 2020 there will be several major new devices from key players in this space. Look for Google and Samsung to enter as serious competitors in the smartwatch race alongside Apple. Additionally, look to Oculus Go, Quest, and Rift S to provide virtual reality sports upgrades, while the North Focals 2.0, a pair of augmented reality glasses, may add to the sports viewing experience in the next few years.
Augmented and virtual reality offer all sports leagues and teams a new revenue stream. According to Front Office Sports, there is ample opportunity for teams to grow revenue streams by selling advertising around augmented reality activations. But to do that, more clubs and pro sports leagues have to embrace the technology first. The AR market in sports remains largely underpenetrated, even as more examples of franchises using augmented and mixed reality pop up. In fact, the NHL Los Angeles Kings remain one of the few pro teams to be utilizing the technology to date, offering their fans interactive player cards and videos. Companies like Teslasuit are also providing full biometric feedback through bodysuits that could be applied to simulate highly accurate stadium realities for fans, or game-like situations for players who want a different way to practice.
Look for women in philanthropy to give back to women in sport. According to Axios, women are taking the lead on donating to women’s collegiate sports teams, as former female athletes are donating millions of dollars to build facilities, endow scholarships, and support coaching positions at their alma maters. The New York Times reports that participation in women’s college sports teams is at an all-time high, outnumbering men's sports for more than 20 years now. And yet, marketing and sponsorships opportunities and support from benefactors for female collegiate teams has caught on slower than men's sports. Turnout for national women's sports grew at an average of almost 40% since 2013, according to a study by sports marketing agency Two Circles. Now, 51% of personal wealth in the U.S. comes from women, based on data from 2015, and is expected to keep growing, so assume that more female benefactors will be there to push for more coverage and opportunities for gender equality in sports.
Esports looks to build on a successful 2019 with more tournaments, teams, and leagues. According to Esports Insider, Intel has announced the Intel World Open, a July 22-24 esports tournament that will take place in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan. The tournament will feature Japan-based title Street Fighter V and Rocket League, with a total prize pool of $500,000. The tournament’s timing, held just days before the Games commence, will ensure excellent worldwide exposure. Esports teams continue to receive their very own stadiums, while esports players could earn nearly as much as NFL salaries in the near future, according to FaZe Clan president Greg Selkoe. The audience for esports is on pace to nearly double over a six-year period, as the 2017 audience stood at 335 million and the 2023 estimates are around 646 million fans. Expect more esports advertisements and major new investments in the industry in 2020.
MLB looks for a new business plan featuring jersey sponsors and robot umpires. According to the Associated Press, umpires agreed to cooperate with Major League Baseball in the development and testing of an automated ball-strike system as part of a five-year labor contract. MLB has discussed installing the system at the Class A Florida State League for 2020. If that test goes well, computer umpires could be used at Triple A games in 2021 as further debugging prior to a big league call-up. Meanwhile, Nike has taken over as MLB’s official outfitter for the next 10 years; the company now has their logo on the front of every MLB jersey. MLB Executive Vice President Noah Garden has also stated that it's "inevitable" that jersey patch sponsorships are coming. It's believed that jersey ad patches could arrive as soon as 2022, when the league enters a new labor deal with the MLBPA.

This is the Cubs prospect to watch in camp
The countdown to pitchers and catchers reporting is down to single digits for all 30 MLB clubs, but as exciting as it is to see the return of Major League stars, it's also a time to dream about the next wave of baseball talent. With the help of MLB.com's beat writers, here's a prospect to keep an eye on for each and every team in 2019.
AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST
Blue Jays: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 3B The Blue Jays might be in the process of rebuilding, but their upcoming Spring Training will be must-see TV because of one player. Guerrero, arguably one of the most hyped prospects in history, will report to big league camp for the first time in his career. Guerrero appeared in a handful of spring games for Toronto in 2018, but he's never been a full participant in camp and this will be the first time fans get to watch his progress from start to finish. Guerrero vs. Chris Sale, Blake Snell, Aroldis Chapman and Masahiro Tanaka: These matchups have never happened before, but they might this spring -- and if they do the entire baseball world will be watching. If Guerrero comes anywhere close to matching the hype, there are certain milestones of his career people will not want to miss, and his very first Major League Spring Training is one of them. Circle Feb. 23 on the calendar because that's when all of the fun could begin with an afternoon home game vs. the Tigers. -- Gregor Chisholm
Video: MLB Network on Vlad Jr. being game's top prospect
Orioles: Yusniel Diaz, OF Orioles camp will be full of blue-chippers eager to show the new regime what they can do as the club heads into a season in which big league opportunities figure to be available in plenty. The crop includes fast-rising Ryan Mountcastle, rebound candidates Hunter Harvey and Austin Hays, and late bloomers Ryan McKenna and Dean Kremer. But the obvious choice here is Yusniel Diaz, the prize of the Manny Machado trade and the Orioles' No. 1 prospect per MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old Cuban slumped at Double-A last summer, but has generally rose steadily since signing with the Dodgers in November 2015. He is considered a potential five-tool player with an advanced approach at the plate, an ability to play all three outfield positions and a shot at debuting in Baltimore as early as this summer. -- Joe Trezza
:: Spring Training coverage presented by Camping World ::
Rays: Nate Lowe, 1B Once the Rays decided to trade Jake Bauers to the Indians this offseason, it became clear that the organization believes Nate Lowe is the first baseman of the future. Lowe won the Rays' Minor League Player of the Year Award in 2018 after dominating three levels in the Minors. The Rays' No. 13 prospect according to MLB Pipeline finished with 27 homers in 2018, and scouts have little doubt that the power will translate to the Majors due to his 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame. Lowe is one of the 24 non-roster invitees at this year's Spring Training, and it will be interesting to see what Lowe can show in just over a month. There's a good chance we see Lowe at the big league level at some point in 2019, but the 23-year-old will look to display his power all throughout the spring. -- Juan Toribio
Red Sox: Bobby Dalbec, 3B The power-hitting third baseman will be in big league camp for the first time, and Red Sox fans look forward to watching him take aim at the replica Green Monster at JetBlue Park. Dalbec has the best raw power in Boston's farm system, and his batting practice sessions could be a must-see event for fans roaming the back fields. But Dalbec isn't just about offense; he was a much-improved defender at the hot corner last season, displaying a quick first step and a strong arm. Look for Dalbec to start 2019 at Double-A and likely finish it at Triple-A. A September callup isn't out of the question. -- Ian Browne
Yankees: Clint Frazier, OF Frazier's 2018 season was derailed in the Yankees' second exhibition game, when he sustained a concussion slamming into the left-field wall in Bradenton, Fla. Recurring symptoms dogged the promising outfielder throughout much of the campaign, but he recently received a clean bill of health and has eyes upon claiming the starting left-field job from Brett Gardner. Frazier was lauded for his "legendary" bat speed in 2016, when he served as the centerpiece in the Andrew Miller trade. -- Bryan Hoch
AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL
Indians: Bobby Bradley, 1B For those who enjoy the long ball, Bradley will be one to keep an eye on during Spring Training. The 22-year-old first baseman has demonstrated plus power in every step of his Minor League career, launching at least 20 home runs over the last four years (27 in Class A Advanced Lake County in 2015, 29 for Class A Advanced Lynchburg in '16, 23 at Double-A Akron in '17 and 27 between Double- and Triple-A in '18). In '16, he also knocked in an impressive 102 runs in 131 contests. Bradley's powerful bat is definitely something the Indians could use in their lineup once he continues to improve his defense and trim his strikeout rate. But it may not be too much longer until he gets his chance to hit long balls and drive in runs for the big league club. Either way, look for his power to be on full display once the team arrives in Arizona. -- Mandy Bell
Royals: Richard Lovelady, LHP As we've mentioned numerous times on royals.com, Lovelady, 23, doesn't have to go on the 40-man roster until next fall. But Lovelady, who posted a 2.47 ERA last year at Triple-A Omaha with nine saves, may force the Royals' hand this spring. And there certainly are plenty of open spots in the bullpen for Lovelady to grab. A lot of eyes will be on Lovelady when camp opens. He has swing-and-miss stuff and a bulldog mentality, and general manager Dayton Moore brought his name up at the team's recent FanFest as one of those pitchers who could be the next Greg Holland, Kelvin Herrera or Wade Davis. Lovelady just needs an opportunity. -- Jeffrey Flanagan
Video: Callis on the potential of No. 17 prospect Casey Mize
Tigers: Casey Mize, RHP Mize won't be pushing for a roster spot after just 13 Minor League innings last summer. But what last year's top Draft pick shows in camp should play a big role in determining his eventual path to the big leagues.
"I'm not going to even touch the delivery," pitching coach Rick Anderson said of Mize a couple weeks ago at TigerFest. "You just let him get adapted to where he's at. I'm excited to see him, just as I was when [Beau] Burrows and [Matt] Manning came up. You get a chance to see these guys and then you sit down with [roving pitching instructor] A.J. Sager and the Minor League people and talk about where we're going with them and what their thoughts are. It's going to be fun to see him."
The Tigers' decision to invite Mize to Major League camp is similar to what Detroit did with fellow right-hander Alex Faedo, their previous year's top Draft pick. The Tigers rested Faedo for the summer of 2017 after taking him with their first pick, letting him rest his arm following extended work during the University of Florida's run to the College World Series. Before Faedo embarked on his first pro season, the Tigers gave him a glimpse of Major League pitchers and the routine they build to prepare for a season. He pitched in the Tigers' spring exhibition game against Florida Southern College before heading over to Minor League camp. Expect much of the same for Mize. -- Jason Beck
Twins: Alex Kirilloff, OF Kirilloff missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and his only goal entering '18 was to play a full season of healthy baseball. The former first-round selection from the '16 MLB Draft not only stayed healthy, but also had one of the most productive seasons in the Minor Leagues, leading all full-season Minor League hitters in doubles (44) while hitting .348/.392/.578 with 20 homers and 101 RBIs across two levels. The 21-year-old was named the Twins' Minor League Player of the Year, shot up to No. 9 on MLB Pipeline's top 100 prospects list and earned an invite to big league camp this coming spring.
"I'd never had an injury like that, that caused me to miss that much time," Kirilloff said. "But once it got past that point and I accepted everything, I took it as a challenge and tried to make myself better from it." -- Do-Hyoung Park
White Sox: Eloy Jimenez, OF White Sox fans continue waiting on decisions from premium free agents Machado and Bryce Harper, but in the meantime, believe they have a star of their own in the making in Jimenez. Those same fans were disappointed to not have Jimenez come to the Majors at all in 2018, especially after getting a glimpse of his raw power during Spring Training and then watching Jimenez tear through the Minors offensively. The game's No. 3 prospect overall, per MLB Pipeline, has worked diligently on his conditioning in the offseason and seems primed for an impressive rookie campaign, which should begin sometime in mid-April. -- Scott Merkin
Video: All eyes on Jimenez at White Sox Spring Training
AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST
Angels: Jo Adell, OF Adell, ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, is a true five-tool center fielder who has continued to make impressive adjustments in the Minors. He's coming off a breakout year that saw him hit a combined .290/.355/.543 with 20 homers, 32 doubles and 15 stolen bases in 99 games across three levels, including his first stint at Double-A despite being only 19. He'll be in Major League camp for the first time this spring, but isn't likely to reach the Majors in 2020. He'll be in the upper levels of the Minors this season, however, and is the club's most exciting home-grown prospect since Mike Trout. -- Rhett Bollinger
Video: Callis on Forrest Whitley being top pitching prospect
Astros: Forrest Whitley, RHP Whitley, the seventh-ranked overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, is one of the Astros' most highly touted prospects in the last couple of years. Whitley, who dominated at the Arizona Fall League after being held to 26 1/3 innings at Double-A Corpus Christi last year following a 50-game suspension and a pair of injuries, will probably begin the season at Triple-A Round Rock and should make his way to Houston at some point in 2019. There's a reason the Astros came out publicly and said the 6-foot-7 Whitley isn't available in trades this offseason. -- Brian McTaggart
Athletics: Jesus Luzardo, LHP All eyes will be on Luzardo when camp opens next week. The A's top prospect, all of 21 years old, is the most intriguing Opening Day rotation candidate. The southpaw sensation -- who was recently anointed the game's top left-handed pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline -- climbed three levels in the Minors in 2018 and put together a 10-5 record and 2.88 ERA with 129 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings. Despite having just four games under his belt at the Triple-A level, the A's won't hesitate to throw him in the big league rotation with a strong spring showing. Conversely, they don't want to rush him if they feel he's not ready, and wouldn't shy away from giving him more time at Triple-A. Either way, the hype is real. Luzardo is armed with a premium arsenal -- including a high-90s fastball that features a high spin rate and an elite changeup -- and the kind of pinpoint command that typically eludes young pitchers. -- Jane Lee
Mariners: Kyle Lewis, OF With all the offseason moves by Jerry Dipoto, the Mariners are suddenly loaded with interesting young prospects, including promising pitchers Justus Sheffield, Justin Dunn and Erik Swanson, who all could impact the rotation before long. Nine of the club's Top 30 prospects per MLB Pipeline were acquired this winter. But there's a returning prospect who might be even more intriguing to keep an eye on this spring, as Lewis -- the club's No. 1 Draft pick in 2016 -- should finally be at full strength in his return from knee surgery. Fans will finally get to see Lewis in action at his first Major League camp as the 23-year-old looks to re-establish himself as a key part of the franchise's future plans. -- Greg Johns
Rangers: Taylor Hearn, LHP Spring Training will give the Rangers a chance to take a good look at Hearn, 24, who was acquired from the Pirates in a trade for Keone Kela at the end of July. He is at the forefront of a group of Minor League starting pitchers who are expected to make an impact at the big league level in two to three years. Hearn, who is from nearby Royse City, has a fastball that hits 97-98 miles per hour but still has to refine his location. He has a good feel for a changeup, but is still working on his slider. He could end up with a future in the bullpen, but the Rangers will give him a chance to start and he could be fun to watch in Spring Training. -- T.R. Sullivan
NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST
Braves: Cristian Pache, OF Andruw Jones says Pache is already the best defensive outfielder within an organization that includes Ender Inciarte, who has won three straight Gold Glove Awards. Other evaluators have opined the 20-year-old prospect might be the game's best defensive outfield prospect. The young outfielder hit the first nine homers of his professional career last year and his power will likely increase as he continues to physically mature. Pache held his own while experiencing his first big league Spring Training last year. His presence during this year's camp should give Braves fans further reason to be excited about the possibility he might be roaming the outfield with Ronald Acuna Jr. at some point during the 2020 season. -- Mark Bowman
Marlins: Victor Victor Mesa, OF Mesa, Miami's No. 1 prospect and baseball's 99th overall per MLB Pipeline, enters Spring Training as a non-roster invitee and a bit of a mystery. The 22-year-old and his younger brother, Victor Mesa Jr., defected from Cuba last May and he has not seen any real game action since. He signed for $5.25 million (and his brother for $1 million) with the Marlins in October.
The fact that the elder Mesa hasn't played in games in about a year will create plenty of intrigue as to what he can do. A speedster with a cannon for an arm, Mesa draws praises from scouts for his defensive abilities. His approach at the plate is also solid, and the thought is that he will hit for average. But there are questions as to how much power he will provide. The Marlins will give Mesa every chance to showcase himself; along with game action, he is expected to be in the bullpen tracking pitches during pitcher warmups. Marlins fans are wondering when to expect him in the big leagues, but they will have to wait because he will likely start off at either Class A Advanced Jupiter or Double-A Jacksonville. -- Joe Frisaro
Video: WLD@USA: Alonso mashes a 2-run homer to left field
Mets: Peter Alonso, 1B A vocal segment of Mets fans wanted top-ranked prospect Peter Alonso in the Majors last season. They'll be back in full-throated support of Alonso this spring, when he attempts to make the Mets' Opening Day roster despite odds stacked against him. While Alonso has nothing left to prove offensively in the Minors, slugging 36 home runs over two levels last season, the Mets must keep him down until mid-April if they want to ensure an extra year of team control.
Regardless of that decision, Alonso promises to be under a microscope this spring, as the Mets try to figure out if he really is their first baseman of the future -- particularly on defense, where he has struggled since the Mets drafted him in the second round in 2016. If all goes well, Alonso has potential to develop into one of the best right-handed sluggers in baseball. -- Anthony DiComo
Nationals: Victor Robles, OF One of the biggest reasons the Nationals could potentially lose Harper and still be OK? Robles, the club's top prospect and MLB Pipeline's No. 4 overall prospect in baseball. Had he not hyperextended his left elbow on a diving catch last April, Robles would have received his chance in D.C. last season. Instead, his friend Juan Soto got the chance and he ran with the opportunity. This year will be Robles' turn.
Washington is going to hand Robles the job as the everyday center fielder because the team believes he is ready to show off all of his tools: The speed around the bases and in the outfield, the instincts and arm on defense and an approach at the plate that they do not believe will be overwhelmed by big league pitching -- along with enough power to make pitchers pay for mistakes. Robles is about to get his chance to prove himself this season, and the Nationals hope he will end up roaming the outfield at Nationals Park for years to come. -- Jamal Collier
Phillies: Adam Haseley, OF The Phillies selected Haseley with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, and there is some thought that he could push for a job on the big league roster later this season, if he plays well and if there is a need. Haseley opened last season with Class A Clearwater before being promoted to Double-A Reading. He put up impressive numbers with Reading, batting .316 with six home runs, 17 RBIs and an .880 OPS in 159 plate appearances. If the Phillies sign Harper at some point this spring, it obviously hurts Haseley's chances to make a big league impact in 2019. But if Harper signs elsewhere, the Phillies could have a use for Haseley mid-summer, especially with outfielders like Odubel Herrera and Aaron Altherr trying to rebound from disappointing seasons, and Roman Quinn having an extensive injury history. -- Todd Zolecki
NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL
Brewers: Keston Hiura, 2B In this case, the must-see prospect in camp might also be the one with the chance to make the biggest impact. Hiura impressed manager Craig Counsell and the Major League staff last year by batting .419 with a .986 OPS in 31 Cactus League at-bats before a solid season split between Class A Advanced Carolina and Double-A Biloxi -- as well as a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League, where he posted a .934 OPS. President of baseball operations David Stearns has already said Hiura will begin the season in the Minors, but with the big club poised to start a platoon of Cory Spangenberg and Hernan Perez or Tyler Saladino, Hiura could have callup potential once Super 2 territory is cleared. -- Adam McCalvy
Video: Mayo on Reyes being a prospect to keep an eye out for
Cardinals: Alex Reyes, RHP Reyes has been the Cardinals' top-ranked prospect for four straight seasons, but he's eager to graduate from that list this season. He missed 2017 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and made just one start (four innings) in 2018 before requiring surgery to repair a torn tendon in his lat muscle. His rehab schedule has him on track to be ready to pitch in Spring Training, and the Cards will use the next several weeks to assess his health and optimal fit for the season ahead. They remain open to using him as a starter or reliever, depending on need. -- Jenifer Langosch
Cubs: Nico Hoerner, SS Chicago built its core through position players at the top of the MLB Draft, and the club is hoping that Hoerner (taken 24th overall in the '18 Draft) will soon fit into that same category. The 21-year-old Stanford product has certainly turned heads since turning pro. A left elbow issue limited Hoerner to 14 games last season, but the shortstop posted a 1.021 OPS in 60 plate appearances. He then opened eyes with Mesa in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .337 with one homer, four doubles, four triples and an .867 OPS in 21 games. With his bat-to-ball ability and impressive exit velocities, Hoerner could develop fast and grow into more power. MLB Pipeline listed him in the final spot in the latest Top 100 rankings and projected that he could reach MLB by the 2020 season. If Hoerner gets some Cactus League action this spring, Cubs fans will want to pay attention. -- Jordan Bastian
Pirates: Mitch Keller, RHP Last year, Keller said it was "kind of a big deal" to pitch two innings in a mid-March Grapefruit League game. Pirates fans will get a much longer glimpse at the club's top prospect this spring. Keller, MLB Pipeline's No. 19 overall prospect, will be in big league camp from the start and may be preparing for his Major League debut at some point this summer. He has a plus fastball and curveball, and the Bucs have been stressing the importance of his changeup over the past few years. The 22-year-old right-hander is set to begin the season with Triple-A Indianapolis, where he initially struggled last season before finishing strong. Third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes, Pittsburgh's No. 2 prospect and a dynamic defender with an improving bat, will also be in big league camp for the first time this spring. -- Adam Berry
Reds: Nick Senzel, 3B/2B/OF Cincinnati's prospect to watch happens to also be the organization's No. 1 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and MLB's No. 6 overall. Senzel is back for his second big league camp, but this one has much more at stake. The Reds have an opening in center field and Senzel -- a career infielder -- has spent most of his offseason learning the position to try to make the team. Senzel could also make the club in a super-utility type role where he plays regularly. If the 23-year-old hadn't had a bout of vertigo and a broken right finger last season, he likely would already be in the Major Leagues. Now he must show not only that he can stay healthy, but that he can also be a quick learner to take on a new position at the game's highest level. -- Mark Sheldon
NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST
D-backs: Jazz Chisholm, SS D-backs fans who got out to watch Arizona Fall League games last year got a sneak peek at Chisholm. Signed in the 2015 international class, Chisholm is an athletic shortstop that has moved up steadily through the system. While his ETA in the big leagues is probably not until 2020 and he could be one of the early cuts in camp, D-backs fans should take advantage of the opportunity this spring to get a glimpse of what the future looks like for the organization at shortstop. -- Steve Gilbert
Dodgers: Keibert Ruiz, C Assuming he isn't dealt in a trade for J.T. Realmuto or Corey Kluber, Ruiz will be the prospect that draws the most attention because he's younger than outfielder Alex Verdugo or fellow catcher Will Smith -- and might also have the highest ceiling. Ruiz spent all last year at Double-A and is only 20 years old now. With Austin Barnes, Russell Martin, Rocky Gale and Smith ahead of him on the depth chart, the big question is how much spring playing time Ruiz will get. -- Ken Gurnick
Giants: Joey Bart, C Bart, the Giants' top prospect, will headline the list of 18 non-roster invitees at big league camp this spring. The second overall pick out of Georgia Tech in last June's Draft, Bart quickly lived up to expectations after batting .298 with a .983 OPS and 13 home runs in 45 games with Class A Salem-Keizer in 2018. With Buster Posey on the mend from major hip surgery, the 22-year-old Bart could see a lot of action early in camp, giving the Giants plenty of opportunities to evaluate their promising young catcher. -- Maria Guardado
Video: MLB Network highlights No. 2 prospect Tatis' talents
Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr., SS Who else? Tatis is presumably the answer to the Padres' decade-long shortstop question, and there's a chance he answers it in a big way. MLB Pipeline rated him as the sport's No. 2 overall prospect, and he's the rare five-tool talent without a glaring flaw in his game. Tatis, who has only played a few months at Double-A, will have his work cut out for him to make the Opening Day roster. He's got service-time concerns working against him as well. But he's going to arrive in San Diego soon enough. And he'll bring plenty of swagger with him. -- AJ Cassavell
Rockies: Brendan Rodgers, INF Rodgers -- the No. 10 prospect in the Majors according to MLB Pipeline -- is in Major League camp for the second straight year, but this is his first shot at breaking with the big club as he competes for the starting second base job. Ryan McMahon, Garrett Hampson (the Rockies' No. 4 prospect) and Pat Valaika also are in the running for the job. Realistically, for Rodgers to not start the season at Triple-A Albuquerque, he'll have to win the job with a breakthrough spring -- like the one shortstop Trevor Story accomplished in 2016. -- Thomas Harding

5,000 Question Survey--Part twenty-two
Uh... so I found this in my drafts. Apparently, I went from part twenty-one to twenty-three, skipping right over this one. So... here it is. Out of order. I’m leaving what I had answered already, so the answers aren’t current until 2053. Not that it matters, but yeah.
2001. Can you believe that we have only gotten through two fifths of this survey so far? I’d probs be further along, but it’s taken me awhile. I forgot about it for a bit.

shiek? Is this supposed to be chic? If so, isn’t that the same as stylish? smart? Meh. I guess. I mean, we all are in different ways.
