Captain Barnacles : “Oh… my…”

Hey, so do you ever stop to think about how the premise of Lord of the Rings being an in-universe book written by some of the characters who lived through that story means that they decided what parts and perspectives to use to tell that story...?
And when our authors weren't there to experience the events themselves, they have to rely on what they're told about them by the characters who were there, right...?
Okay so stop and think about the Glittering Caves.
We never actually go to the caves in the narrative. Tolkien LOVES describing nature and natural beauty, but we don't actually see the caves described "by him" the way we do other places. Obviously Gimli's words are Tolkien's, yes; but we only see the caves filtered through his words about them, after the fact.
When Gimli and Éomer and the other Rohirrim take refuge there, the narrative doesn't follow them. Obviously from a narrative standpoint this is to keep the focus narrow, and not to interrupt the battle-sequence with a long ode to the beauty of the caves, and to create tension in the reader who doesn't know if these characters are okay or not. Which all makes sense!
But think about it in terms of the book that was written in Middle-earth by the folk living there. Why DON'T we get to have a direct experience of those caves? Gimli obviously related several other parts of the story that none of the Hobbits were there to witness to them, and which were written into the books as Direct Events Happening In The Narrative (think of the Paths of the Dead scene, for one of the more visceral moments!). So why not the Glittering Caves?
Was it because they wanted to keep that narrative focus and tension, and so they didn't include his perspective on that part of the battle? Perhaps, that's certainly a possibility to consider.
But also consider: when we do hear about the Glittering Caves, what we hear is Gimli telling Legolas about the Glittering Caves. THAT is the part of that event that is considered of importance to include in the book: not Gimli's actual experience when he was in them, but rather the part where he relates that experience TO Legolas.
And I kind of just THOUGHT about that today.
And went HUH.

caved and finally decided to do a mix of digisona and tamersona art lol
pardon the strange artifacting, glaze was very much not meant to deal with a lot of solid colors, but i hope you can still appreciate the work i put into all this!
cringe is dead and i'm not into necromancy so when my brain said "digisona time" i said "this weekend, for sure"
first pic is art from like two years ago though, we just were not using tumblr at the time so we never ended up posting it here
second is also from like last year when i fronted for the first time in a while. played around with some fun brushes and tbh? might have to play with 'em some more because trying to get digital effects beyond glitchy stuff is a Goal of mine.

the Michael/Book thing has been incredibly rushed, from a narrative standpoint, but I like them better than I liked Michael/Tyler

( ❄️ — kinfession )
I could just post this on my blog (I still might, later) but I've found asking this blog to be a comfort space (so thank you, mod g <3) (even if no one knows what I'm going on about)
The realisation of this detail kind of hit me at the most random time yesterday (I wasn't even thinking about anything Flash related IIRC) and I had to put it somewhere. This is how it's composed in my mind so it's likely just in my canon and not directly linked to source (I'm writing this off my head without checking Google): Caitlin has always worn makeup since her first appearance in Season 1, so it's not at all a new concept. However, it always was more natural or light (excludes potential special events i.e. Christmas parties). In Season 3, it's more noticeable. The purple hued eyeshadow and bolder red/stronger coloured lipsticks. From a normal fan's POV that likely was just a stylistic choice for a fun change or whatever. But my POV? During that time, it's no new information that my body was going through a physical change due to the surfacing of Killer Frost's meta 'genes' - and that's the key. White streaks were appearing in my hair - I cut them off. My lips and eyelids were slowly turning blue - I put on makeup to cover them. Killer Frost has 'natural makeup' as part of her face and those features were trying to appear. I had to hide them. Out of fear. I just think it's a pretty neat detail to recall!

A drawing of Ash Tyler for @solo-by-choice as part of the @startrekwintergiftexchange
I've only very rarely seen anything Ash Tyler related and once I saw the prompt I had to remedy that immediately!
And a close up detail:

Okay I hope this isn't ? A weird thing to ask? But I'm genderfluid (I think) and I've been questioning if I'm just ftm, do you know of any ways I could know? Or stuff like that? (I know you're genderfluid and not ftm but idk my mind has labled you as a gender safe space for stuff like this)
hello nonnie !!
first off, thank you for seeing my blog as a gender safe space ! it absolutely is.
now; I may not be FTM now, but I did identify as transmasculine for a year !! I can offer my own experience ! I used exclusively he/they for the better part of 2021 ! I had been having doubts over my feminity for a while before that. I decided to give it a trial run and see how I felt !! I liked being perceived as masculine, and it felt really good (still does ! he/him my beloved <3), but over time, I felt it hard to keep the feminine aspects away (this isn't to say that being ftm AND feminine isn't possible, it very much is). coupled with some other factors - not wanting surgery, not really.. caring that much for gender tbf, I decided genderfluid was better fitted ! so ! I switched back to that & he/she.
I had known I wasn't cis (or at least didn't see myself as what is typically seen as a "woman") since I was young, I just didn't realise there was another option. if there is a voice in your head telling you that you're queer/trans, it's worth listening to and exploring the option.
now; if you want to give transmasculinity a trial run, go for it !! ask certain people you know you can (friends, mutuals, etc) to refer to yourself as a guy ! introduce yourself to new people AS A GUY (works best online) and see if it fits ! if it does, it does, if not - no harm is done, and you have your answer.
now, I am not in favour of strict labels (because I feel that gender and sexuality are very fluid and change overtime!) and in the end - the label should work for you, not the other way around. if it doesn't work, change it !! if it works for a while and then doesn't, that okay ! even rocks change over time.
ultimately, the only thing that will change is how you perceive yourself. in terms of transition ? you don't need to "transition" to be trans. if you don't want to get surgeries or take hormones, you don't have to ! the label of FTM is just that, a label. no one can decide if it's the right one for you, but yourself.
(there is also the added pressure of transphobia & fitting people's preconceptions of you. pay them no mind in how you approach your personal identity, but stay safe)
I hope this has helped clear some doubts for you - I am in no way a gender expert and only speaking from personal experience. there is only so much I can say while being vague and general. if you're comfortable - my DMs are open, or you can continue to use the ask box if you have anymore questions.
