*“You don’t need to be ready. You just need to begin.”*

The rain was the first thing she noticed.

Cold. Constant. Drenching. It soaked her clothes, her hair, her skin—like the sky itself was trying to erase her.

Then came the second realization: **she couldn’t breathe.**

Not because anything was blocking her airway, but because panic wrapped around her chest like a vice. Her hands curled against the wet grass beneath her, trembling violently. Her pajama pants clung to her legs like chilled clingfilm, and her t-shirt offered no warmth, no comfort. She was barefoot. Blind without her glasses. Disoriented.

Alone.

Her breath caught in her throat. **Where was she?**

The world didn’t look right. The green was too green. The sky too vast. The air… it buzzed with something unnatural, something *wrong*.

“N-no…” she whispered, voice ragged and nearly lost in the wind. “N-not… real… I—wh… where—?”

The words snagged in her mouth. Her stutter tangled with her fear. **Not now. Please, not now.**

She pressed her fists to her head, willing the world to slow down. She needed a plan. A phone. A map. A hospital. Her meds. Her **brace.** God, her leg was screaming. Her knee throbbed deep in the joint, the familiar ache of old damage—but worse now, unsupported, unbalanced.

**Was this a breakdown?**

A delusion?

**Had something finally snapped?**

Her heart pounded, erratic and cruel. Her breath turned shallow, sharp. Too fast. Not enough.

**She was going to die here.**

And then—

**Lightning.**

A crack split the sky with a flash so bright it scorched her eyes. She flinched and curled into herself, her shoulders hitching up by instinct.

But the thunder didn’t come alone.

A presence slammed into her side—solid, warm, *alive*.

She screamed.

Until she saw him.

A shape she knew better than her own reflection.

**Bronze fur. Violet eyes. A long, curling tail that glowed faintly in the gloom.**

“E… Enigma?”

Her voice cracked around his name.

The Raichu looked older. Taller. His fur shimmered with power, and something in the air trembled with his breathing. His cheeks sparked, but not in threat—just **being**. Just existing.

The moment their eyes met, the breath caught in her throat finally broke loose—and she **sobbed**.

Not one polite tear. Not a sniffle.

She broke.

Collapsed into his chest, arms wrapped tight around him, clutching like he was the last real thing in the world.

Because maybe he was.

“I—I c-can’t— I don’t know w-where—” she gasped, hiccuping on words that wouldn’t form right. “It’s not—real. I th-think I’m… I think I’m br-broken.”

Enigma didn’t speak. He didn’t need to.

He curled his massive body around her, his tail looping protectively across her legs, shielding her from the worst of the wind. His hum—a low, crackling thrum of static—vibrated through her bones. A frequency she knew from a thousand hours together. Comfort. **Home.**

He pressed his forehead gently to hers, letting her cry.

Letting her *be* scared.

Because he remembered.

Everything.

The lonely nights. The pain. The games. The way she held him as a child, whispering her worries to the screen like he could actually hear.

And now… he could.

They stayed like that until her panic began to ebb. Not gone, not cured. But held. Contained. The storm outside couldn’t match the one that had raged inside her—but Enigma *could*.

When her breathing evened out and her grip loosened, Enigma rose slowly and turned his body, crouching low.

She hesitated.

“I… I can’t w-walk, En. N-not like this…”

Enigma looked back and huffed. His tail twitched with something close to exasperation—*You don’t need to walk. Just hold on.*

So she did.

Climbing onto his back was awkward with her leg the way it was, but he adjusted without complaint. Strong. Steady. The same way he always had been.

The field stretched out in every direction, hills rolling into mist and trees far off on the horizon. It didn’t matter where they went. She didn’t care if they found answers.

**She had him.**

And that was enough—for now.

As Enigma padded forward into the storm, every bolt of lightning was met with the glow of his cheeks. Every rumble of thunder answered by the crackle of the power in his steps.

Wherever they were going… she wasn’t alone anymore.

writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.

“kids spend too much time on their devices” well what else are they supposed to do? there’s no corner shops with pinball machines in them on every corner anymore. there’s no malls or stores in small towns for teens to hang out in without being suspected of shoplifting or kicked out for loitering. sidewalks are too broken for them to ride their bikes and there’s no bike lane in the street to make it safe for them. i just don’t understand where they expect these kids to go when they keep taking places away from them. and yes having no safe public places for them is what leads a lot of teens into addiction if they end up at a place where people aren’t truly looking out for them.

The last days of the petition against conversion therapy are FASCINATING to watch. I have been following it pretty closely for almost a year now, and the progress was, above all, steady. There was this jump when some algorithm in Finland picked it up, but even that was local.

And now, everyone is panicking.

Which really shows.

These past three or four days, multiple countries have reached the threshold. Even more notably, the number of signatures in total, the ones that we need to get one million of, are growing rapidly. There are only 400'000 signatures missing. Two days ago, it was closer to 600'000.
