Anon you're the smartest of the anons ever and also thanks for giving me an excuse to feel less embarrassed of posting preg cat Mario here ajskdjak

Here's some ideas regarding the cat suit when Mario's preggy bc about the tanuki suit I've got like one:

-When Mario's with the cat suit, his body becomes cat-like (surprise :0 omg) and that means he's much more flexible, so he really likes to use the suit when he feels overwhelmed at how much he can't do now that his pregnancy's so advanced. When he's a cat he can stretch like he wants, his belly doesn't feel as cumbersome and he can even loaf for a lil' while (until it becomes uncomfortable, and he has to change positions).

>It's for those reasons that, let's say that at the last weeks of pregnancy, Mario sleeps at night with the suit on. He sleeps soundly and wakes up feeling very rested, never mind whichever weird position he was in, he feels great.

>Now this is a problem for Peach's sleeping, because since Mario's able to pull weirder positions to sleep in, she often finds herself with a very pregnant cat just sleeping on top of her and snoring the loudest he ever has. The whole night. She doesn't say much about it, she's glad that Mario is resting and sleeping well, because before they figured out the Super Bell, he couldn't move much when sleeping, since any change in position could alter his comfort. He could be laying in his side, and if he tips a bit too forward his belly starts pulling at his back and makes it ache, but if he tips too backwards, the weight of the babies makes him feel short of breath- so basically he can't do anything without feeling discomfort.

>Before Mario was pregnant, he moved everywhere too when he slept at night, but Peach could easily hold him and pin him down and whenever he moved, she just hugged him and manhandled him to her own comfort, he always slept so deeply that he didn't really notice that he was being thrown around like a doll. BUT it's much harder when the small guy is pregnant with twins, it isn't just harder to move him since he's heavier, but also, she doesn't want to cause him discomfort nor jostle the babies too much. She doesn't want to move him around this time either, and yeah, she could just scoot away from Mario, but he always unconsciously looks around for her body to get closer. So, Peach stays right in the middle of the bed, it's much better being uncomfortable there, than at a little corner where she's still going to have Mario right over her.

-About tanuki Mario, the fact that they gain some weight when they have the Super Leaf was not pulled from my heart, the source is here SJDKSJ from Super Mario Broth's twitter. Also, I think it was the racoon power-up, but honestly I don't get the difference between that one and the tanuki one hwdwh

-One morning Peach finally snaps, and pretty much yells at Mario that she can't take it any longer and she's so sleepy. Mario jumped in place from her outburst but kept listening silently while she rambled about how Mario stays almost on top of her ALL night and he wouldn't let her fall asleep and it's been so many nights already and if she goes another night without sleeping, she'll go crazy- and when she's breathing to get her air back after all that, he says almost shyly, why don't you use a Super Bell too?

I'm actually curious of if you have any specific inspirations for the way you draw them? Generally I see a big mix of M&L series art but was wondering if there were other inspirations too?

Tons. Tons of Inspiration. Most of them come from the games but others actually are from promotional art, Japanese ads, or I just made it the heck up.

Here's a list of all the places I've pulled form in previous drawings:

Mario & Luigi series (Where I pull the most from, it's the most obvious) Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, Bowser's Inside Story, and Dream Team.

Super Mario 64 DS (Unagi eel encounter and playing 'Picture Poker' mini game with Luigi)

New Super Mario Bros. series (Getting stuck in the bubble and propeller power up flying)

Mario Galaxy 1+2 (Boo Mario and Luigi are very cute. Luigi especially because not only is he more oval shaped compared to his round brother; but he constantly has a worried look from being a ghost)

Luigi's Mansion series (The duck floaty is from LM3)

Mario Marker (They're wearing their MM construction outfits but they're eating sandwiches on top of a I-beam like at the end of LM3)

Mario Paint (Mario wears his normal cap sideways with his painter outfit in that game while in Odyssey it's a beret)

Now drawings of the Baby Bros are a special case. Out of the original 18 doodles, 5 of them come from 'Partners in Time' because that's where they're the most prominent as playable characters. But a grand majority of them I just made up, but not without a lot of thought! For example, the doodle of the babies in pajamas makes reference to their animal power ups. Baby M has a racoon plushy and Baby L has a fox plushy; a nod to Tanooki Mario and Kitsune Luigi. But Baby L also has spotted pajamas connecting more to his spotted cat form.

As for commercials, two poses come specifically from a single Japanese only ad where Mario rescues Luigi from Bowser (High-five + Hug Jump). And the white suit movie premiere outfits drawing I did actually comes from a Japan-only Super Mario All-Stars commercial.

So yeah, probably a long-winded answer just to say that all the drawings at the very least have roots somewhere.

i have no idea if luigi in the mario movie calling mario's tanooki suit a "bear" is in reference to how luigi in charles martinet's old silly videos didn't know what most animals were (he kept calling them cows)

a silly little post about what racer they'd choose if they played mario kart 8 deluxe (+ some headcanons)

SUGIMOTO

he'd 100% choose baby luigi . he thinks luigi is MUCH cooler than mario and he chose him as a baby because he thinks he'll go faster if tiny. he also always chooses the jet bike as the vehicle (what can i say it just looks like it goes very fast)

SHIRAISHI

HE WOULD ABSOLUTELY CHOOSE ROY . i mean look at his sunglasses he's clearly the coolest. shiraishi always gets the WORST items and when he finally gets a mushroom he ends up crashing against a wall or falling off the map

ASIRPA

king boo . she LOVES choosing king boo and screaming BOOOOOO SUGIMOTO IM GONNA EAT YOU when she's behind him (she really does it with everyone but sugimoto is the one who gets scared the most because he genuinely thinks king boo can eat other racers). she just loves feeling like a menace and hitting other racers all the time

OGATA

WHAT CAN I SAY they have the same black void eyes and i think ogata relates to him in a very deep way. ogata SUCKS at drifting but he throws bananas, bombs and green shells like a pro (doesn't matter if the other racer is behind or ahead of him)

TANIGAKI

tanooki mario because inkarmat told him tanooki mario reminds her of him. he always ends up being the last one because he absolutely SUCKS at mario kart

INKARMAT

100000% CAT PEACH . she's matching with tanigaki. she always drives extremely well and therefore ends up being one of the last ones with tanigaki (but theyre in the bottom 3 together)

KOITO

BABY PEACH . he thinks peach is an absolute GIRLBOSS and like sugimoto he thinks she'll go faster as a baby. he can NEVER win against ogata because ogata somehow always has shells or bananas or bombs and throws most of them at koito no matter if he's behind or ahead of ogata

TSUKISHIMA

toad . he didn't really know who to choose but koito INSISTED toad reminded him of toad and he thought choosing toad would be better than choosing the random option. he does NOT know what he's doing and tries to avoid the item boxes because he thinks they're obstacles for some reason. he sometimes ends up going THE OPPOSITE way but still manages to be in 11th place (just because tanigaki is worse)

TSURUMI

this man has his own mii (i made a mii just for him btw) . hes the kinda guy that has studied every object in the game and know how they all work and how to use them to win ... not a menace because hes a violent racer but because he just knows how to play

USHIYAMA

HE'S DEFINITELY DAISY . my man ushiyama chooses the prettiest girl and THAT'S DAISY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think he's a pretty average mario kart player but sometimes he stops the vehicle because he accidentally pushes the backwards button (his fingers are too big, he thinks someone threw him a mysterious item that somehow stops the vehicle and he doesn't even notice he's the one doing it)

HIJIKATA

he thinks THE GAME gave him the character and he can't change it (he seriously believes he's stuck with mario but no one tells him because they all think he chose mario himself). despite that he's surprisingly good, not because he's a good racer but because he always gets triple red shells and annoys everyone with them

NIKAIDOU

his brother played wario (he will bite ANYONE who tries to pick wario) . he screams WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH in every jump or gliding part. he goes feral when he gets a superstar and starts hitting all the people he can

KIRORANKE

YOSHI !!!!!!!!!!! ironically he SUCKS at throwing bombs and ends up hitting himself with them (he HATES when they're playing battle mode and it's Bob-omb Blast time). he's VERY bad at first but gets better after playing a few times if you ignore him hitting himself with his own items

WILK

DRY BONES . hes a silly guy and picks the silliest guy !!!! a pretty average player methinks ... definitely laughs at every single person that gets hit with a shell but gets mad when hes the one that gets hit

I have to say, these are the weirdest sets of Mario toys I've ever seen... Most of them look horrendous 😅 Especially Bowser and some Peaches, lol, though, again, I like to see that there are so many different Marios and Luigis, like Metal Mario or Bubble Luigi, as well as King Penguin and the Rabbids! And, of course, Peach looks very good in Daisy's yellow dress 🤭😂

These little figures 🥺🥺🥺 The absolute CUTENESS 😭😭😭 I had bought some of them last year (specifically Mario Maker, Fire Mario and Green Mario), and this year I saw Mario on a plane and it reminded me so much of Super Mario Land that it came home with me 🤭 Also, I don't care at all that Mario has never ridden a unicorn: that figure was so freaking CUTE that I also had to buy it 😌

I may or may not have bought one of these 3D posters... 🤭 I was very surprised and happy to see not only Mario Kart and Galaxy, but also Rabbids! 🤩🤩🤩 That's the game I'm currently playing so it was really a nice surprise!

The last two things I'm gonna show you are two fairground rides, so you'll see there are some emojis or red paint here and there: those are people 😅 The fair is always VERY crowded and these two rides were meant for children, so it was very hard to take pics without people in them. Still, I hope you can see them as clearly as possible! ✨

Look at this cute bouncy castle with Mario and Luigi and a pair of Game Boys showing Super Mario Land 🥹🥹🥹 Listen, I LOVED these things when I was a child, so believe me when I say, if adults were allowed in them, you BET I would've jumped in the very first day 😂😂😂

Also, I took the first picture from the top of the Ferris wheel! 😁 The quality wasn't very good, but I just had to seize the chance and photograph the bros from the air 😂

This one, apparently it's made like the videogames? 🤔 With places you have to jump and climb and such, I can't be sure because, again, it's only for kids 😅 But I really loved seeing it from the outside as there are so many beautiful drawings of the characters! 🤩

I LOVE how angry both brothers look on the pic on the left 😳😳😳 And also how in the next two we have Mario Kart, Sunshine, Odyssey and Tanooki in just one look 😂

Also, on the second one, I tried taking pics of Mario and Luigi using their Firebrand and Thunderhand, but unfortunately that one was on the second floor, and there was a fence in front of it to prevent children from falling off, so it was VERY hard to take a decent pic from below 😅 Still, I wanted to include it because, I mean: Superstar Saga reference!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Thoughts on the Mario movie (spoilers ahead)

The animation is awesome. I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Mario proves his platforming prowess right at the beginning.

Why are there so many short jokes? Mario is a short king!

My favorite part is when Luigi escaped the Dry Bones, and then lightning strikes, showing the Shy Guys behind him. My second favorite part is when the Shy Guys are leading him through the forest and the one Shy Guy says "(Shy Guy noise)." Basically, I like Shy Guys.

I actually kinda like Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi. For most of the movie, they were just Mario and Luigi.

On a similar note, I could hardly tell that Bowser and Toad were Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key, but then again, I haven't seen anything with KMK in a while.

I'm not sure if I like how they portrayed Peach. I've always thought that Daisy was the kickass princess and Peach was the gentle one.

Jack Black once again proving that he has pipes.

Only one Koopaling reference in the entire movie. Shame.

Next-day edit: I just realized there was not a single Lakitu. Even bigger shame.

I find it hilarious that Bowser is equal parts ruthless tyrant and simp for Peach.

The choice to add 80s music was an unexpected choice, but a welcome one. I loved watching them ride through the Kong Kingdom to "Take On Me."

Also, DK! DONKEY KONG!

That was not the voice I was expecting for Cranky Kong.

Chunky is not dead.

In retrospect, the option to portray Donkey Kong as a shithead was completely obvious, especially since they cast Seth Rogen.

Seth Rogen does the Seth Rogen laugh.

Mario: "It's fire flower time!" DK: "Haha gentle blow go brrr."

I personally would have picked the 64 theme for the Rainbow Road scene, but the arrangement for the SNES theme knocked it out of the park.

Blue shell Koopa was a jerk as expected.

Peach legit becomes Elsa at the end. Also, Tanooki Mario is just Tails.

I was bopping my head to the star music when Mario and Luigi grabbed the Super Star.

Overall, a solid 9/10. Please get that Luma some therapy.

Mario Kart

So, I know Mario Kart is probably an Absolutely Not at Fox Tower, but I can't stop thinking about how it would play out, so I have compiled a neat little list of my thoughts on the matter.

Kevin:

He's god-awful at it.

He's a faithful Luigi player (don't ask me why, I just feel it in my gut)

Gets ramped up over it like you wouldn't believe and has on more than one occasion locked himself in the bathroom to sulk over it (the same goes for when the Foxes play Monopoly---the man gets so competitive but he's so bad at it)

Manages to catch Every. Single. Red shell.

Neil:

This boy's never played in his life prior to meeting the Foxes, but manages to land in first, second, or third place every time

Orange Yoshi for the win

Always choses a motorcycle over a kart, typically the Comet

Actually pays attention to the stats of certain combos (so does Kevin, but Neil's better at it when it comes to Mario Kart)

Andrew:

Plays solely Black Yoshi

Targets Kevin exclusively bc it's fun to watch him get mad

Has a specific kart-combo glaringly reminiscent of the Mas

Acts like he doesn't care, but gets perturbed when he doesn't land above 5th place, bc he'll be damned if he lets Aaron or Kevin outdo him

Aaron:

Bounces around between characters, but typically opts for Shy Guy

Almost worse at it than Kevin

Says the most scathing things when playing---the worst things that come out of this boy's mouth are said during Mario Kart

He and Kevin are Last Place Buddies ™ and they have occasionally gone out to drink cheap alcohol together after Mario Kart nights to soothe their bruised egos.

Allison:

An absolute goddess at Baby Peach

Can hit someone across the track with power-ups; it doesn't matter; her aim only gets better the more frustrated she is

Her kart runs on Pure, Undiluted Spite

Knows the Electrodrome track inside and out and Cannot Be Beaten on it

Nicky:

Always opts for Pink Gold Peach

Best friends with the dude who fishes you up from oblivion to deposit you back onto the track (it happens frequently bc he Refuses to turn on smart steering)

Actually pretty decent at it bc he and Erik used to play a lot back in Germany

Swears like a sailor whenever someone passes him

Renee:

Usually plays either Rosalina or Tanooki Mario

Literally the only non-hostile Fox when things get competitive, though she drives like a demon and can out-compete just about anyone when she wants to

The Ruler of Rainbow Road

Steals 1st place from Neil 50% of the time

Matt:

Irrevocably attached to playing Daisy

The king of drifting through corners

Plays to have fun, but not immune to the shouting matches when Kevin or the twinyards are involved

Seems to be permanently stuck in 5th place, regardless of who he's up against

Dan:

Absolutely vicious at Toad

Her kart is always orange; stats don't matter so long as the Fox Aesthetic is on point

She and Matt play so often that she's gotten godlike at most of the tracks, but it's still a fight to outcompete Neil and Renee

Will carry Mario Kart Rage™ for hours; she occasionally has to remove herself from the room so she doesn't say something caustic

Seth:

Instigator of many of the shouting matches

Will play as Bowser until the day he dies

Motorcycle user until the bitter end

Never lands in first place and will die mad about it

Hello you! When I draw the Mario brothers, sometimes I’ll draw them with these little pins on their overalls/shirts. I originally thought they could be just decoration, but I had a better idea to make them practical. There’s Luigi art (small gore warning? It’s not much, just a few scrapes) under the cut along with my ideas for these!

-General facts-

These pins are manufactured by none other than Professor E.Gadd. Be warned however, they can get pretty pricey!! These pins are essentially weaker versions of the power ups on a cooldown. They take about an hour to recharge between uses. Depending on the power up you’ll be able to get about twenty-thirty minutes of usage. There are exceptions, but the same rules apply to most of them.

These are not made to be a replacement for Powerups. But, when you need only a little bit of fire power and don’t want to waste a whole flower, you can just use the pin. These pins also work for every creature, regardless of species or sentience. Mario and Luigi use these primarily given the price and their experience with powerups, but on the rare occasion you will see a toad or koopa with one.

Not every powerup has been made into a pin. The only ones that have been made so far are the 1-Up, fire flower, ice flower, boo mushroom, and tanooki leaf.

Boo Mushroom Pin

Normally if Mario/Luigi take the mushroom, they’ll turn into a boo and be able to fly and go through certain walls. With the pin form they can only go through walls and hover above the ground.

This was one of the very first pins E.Gadd had made due to his studies of Boos. Luigi had been the first one to use and test the pin.

1-Up Pin

I believe this one would be Luigi’s favorite. The 1-Up pin works almost exactly like the mushroom, except it only heals one (1) hp. Giving the user just enough to force down a proper healing item and maybe hide. It’s not preferred over its mushroom form, but it can be very useful in a quick situation. This pin is one of the exceptions to the rules of a power up pin given what it does. It can only be used once every hour.

okay as promised, all my thoughts that no one asked for on the mario kart bracket. i know i picked mario kart deluxe characters but i actually see this as a competition happening on the wii (greatest console in history)

Kino as Baby Daisy vs. Wilmon as Yoshi -- this is very simple. you cannot beat a teenage boy at a video game unless you are a teenage girl. kino, famously not a teenage girl, quits halfway through

Nemik as Waluigi vs. Brasso as Luigi -- mario kart is the one fun, mindless thing that nemik does in his life. but even it is done with all his brainpower. he navigates that track like a boss. brasso, with the best mario kart driver luigi (non-biased opinion of course), does well and easily finishes second but is not mad at all to lose to this kid

Partagaz as Tanooki Mario vs. Leida as Baby Luigi -- leida has logged many hours on the mario kart track because perrin makes her play against him all the time and she has become by far the best player in her tradwife-to-be club. partagaz simply spends the whole race wondering why his avatar is a fox

Jezzi as Lemmy vs. Taga as King Boo -- taga is a nerd, i believe this in my bones. thus he is all over this chance to win a gaming competition. jezzi has better things to care about but tries her hardest

Bix as Wendy vs. Taramyn as Peach -- taramyn is unironically glad to have drawn peach in the draft. he goes all out because this is the most fun he's had in literal years. bix is just as invested though and leads almost the whole race until a blue shell takes her out with two turns to go and taramyn seizes the opportunity

Time Grappler as Toad vs. Mosk as Rosalina -- time grappler is just quietly perfect at this. mosk spends the whole time wanting to police anyone who "violates traffic laws" by going off-course

Syril as Koopa Troopa vs. Cassian as Cat Peach -- cassian races his heart out trying to blow away the competition, not because the competition is syril (who?) but because he got stuck with cat peach. meanwhile syril sees this as the most important competition of his life and spends the whole race thinking he is blowing everyone (especially andor) away....only to be told when it ends that he was looking at the wrong side of the screen and has been racing backwards the whole time

Corv as Metal Mario vs. Blevin as Dry Bowser -- this is a frequent competition in the ISB break room. chairs have been broken. other officers steer clear of the hallway when these two go at it. they go back and forth all the time and are very evenly matched. blevin wins this time by a hair but gloats about it for weeks

Luthen as Dry Bones vs. Gorn as Larry -- both say they do not care. gorn means it. luthen ends up caring SO MUCH. he gets strategic and bitchy with the items and wins, but gorn does better than anyone expects and comes in second

Timm as Lakitu vs. Vel as Bowser -- vel is a giant tomboy who grows up wanting to be a racer of any kind and this is the closest she will ever get to doing that. she murders timm who is really just a turd out there

Saw as Baby Rosalina vs. Eedy as Ludwig -- saw wants to quit halfway through because this is a waste of his time but he sees that the controller is too big for eedy's hands somehow and cruises to victory

Skeen as Bowser Jr. vs. Melshi as Baby Peach -- skeen insists they play on rainbow road. melshi agrees because he's an agreeable guy. skeen is just ahead of him for most of the race but it's very close. ultimately skeen can't handle the pressure and falls off the track at the last turn, leaving melshi a clear track to victory. skeen's remote ends up buried in the drywall

Kleya as Wario vs. Cinta as Shy Guy -- cinta has never cared about anything less in her life. kleya, despite protests to the contrary, cares so much. she is ruthless with the items and bullies her way to victory

Dedra as Daisy vs. Bee as Baby Mario -- dedra spends much of her time in the race overcorrecting on the turns because the controls are too touchy. ultimately it doesn't matter because bee's processor and battery are too old to help him win on such technology as the wii

Tay as Donkey Kong vs. Mon as Mario -- tay is very happy to be donkey kong but even happier that mon is mario because she is nervous and not very good at this but he tells her that mario has an advantage because it's his game. this gives her confidence enough to do well and even though he could beat her if he wanted to, he lets her have the much needed dub

today i went to target to Christmas shop for my mom's side of the family (i'll be visiting them for new years) and i found a toy of mario from the mario movie with the tanuki suit on.

first of all, "tanuki" was misspelled. it was spelled like "tanooki" or something stupid like that.

second of all, in the movie (at least in the english version) they called it a RACCOON suit! which already pissed me off when i saw it in theaters. yeah, i get most english viewers (esp. children) don't know what a tanuki is but if you're going to call it a tanuki on english merchandise AT LEAST spell it right 😭

Say, do you reckon Princess Peach & Judy Hopps would get along? Same with Mario & Nick?

First of all I want you all to know just how much I screamed and kicked my feet when I got this ask because OH MY GODDDDD you’re asking me to combine my two favorite hyperfixations??? AAAA I could literally cry😭😭

I know some people are probably thinking ‘how tf would these characters even interact’ and to that I say, there is so much potential here!! Honestly it’s not completely unlikely that they would ever meet. I mean, the Mario world already features talking turtles and mushrooms and sentient bombs; why not throw an anthropomorphized bunny and fox into the mix?

Gotta say, I think @pianokantzart’s animal AU would be excellent for this scenario though! If we wanna lean more towards Zootopia-verse’s lore (in which humans don’t exist) then having Mario and Peach meet them in their tanooki forms would be just perfect!

As for the actual interaction itself, I do think Judy and Peach would get along! They’re both very optimistic despite constantly being thrown curveballs at every given opportunity. Peach would greatly admire Judy’s bravery and determination, and would openly express how incredible she is for all that she’s done for her career and her boyfriend, Nick. I also think Judy would just be absolutely starstruck around Peach. I mean, how often does one get to hang out with a literal princess?? She’d gradually become more comfortable around her, but would still have the sense to refer to her by her royal status, especially in front of others.

Mario and Nick? Well, I’d say yes to them getting along.. but maybe not right away😆 I’m not saying they’d be outright rude to each other, but they wouldn’t exactly become instant besties like their girls. They’d probably just need some more time to get used to each other to really hit it off. But once they move past the barrier of awkward small talk, I’d say they’d be pretty good friends! Mario’s naturally a very friendly individual, and Nick has that sense of humor that just clicks with most people. Their vibes may be different, but that just what would make their friendship so unique!

I can totally see all four of them hanging out and having the absolute time of their lives😌 I can see them showing each other their worlds; Judy and Nick taking them on a tour around the city, as well as Mario and Peach showing them around the Mushroom Kingdom and maybe even introducing them to their other friends like Luigi and the Toads. (Slight tangent but I am just dying at the thought of Judy n Nick encountering Bowser💀 bc in their world it’s a mammal-only society so the sight of a giant talking turtle that breathes fire would just leave them like🤔😶)

This is a genius idea. I hope y’all are taking notes✍️👀😉

If the training course had an intentional mechanism that destroyed a Luigi cutout as part of the montage, Mario would've completed it a lot sooner. If Mario hadn't managed to save Luigi from falling to his death in time, he would've pushed the frozen Bowser with the powerful swipe of his tanooki tail into the lava. So if Bowser decides to tauntingly see how tough Mario is by making him watch his brother get tortured… well, let's just say that even a simple red mushroom can turn him into the world's most experienced speedrunner.

In these situations Mario would push himself internally - more than he ever has.

If the training course had a Luigi cut-out about to fall, Mario would feel like it's his own brother there. He knows it's not real at the beginning, but later on it starts to weigh on his mind and body, and soon he can see Luigi there. Real. About to fall.

And Mario can't take it anymore. He has to get there and save his brother no matter what! He rockets through that course with a determination Peach has never seen before. His eyes are blazing. His heart is pounding. He reaches out for that cut-out of Luigi and grabs it, holding it tight like it's his real flesh and blood.

Mario lets out a few tears as he lies there, catching his breath.

BNA and the Cure vs Treatment Allegory

Media Recommendation #38

Recently I watched a Netflix Anime series called Brand New Animal, better known as BNA. It is a series by Studio Trigger, creators of some of my favourite over the top action series and masters of worldbuilding. And thought I went in with the preconception that BNA was furbait or perhaps a commentary on xenophobia, I found a more intimate, and unique message.

For this reccomendation/review, I wanna do something different and discuss how I read the media and the implications I can take from its message.

Brand New Animal / BNA

Brand New Animal is set in alternate timeline to ours, where most historic events happened the same on the same planet, but there was a second race of sentient humanoids. What are referred to as Beastmen, are lineages of people who have animal traits to their mannerisms and behaviours, and can also take on an anthropomorphic animal form to maximise expression of these traits.

Humans and Beastmen have coexisted for centuries, beastmen often in the shadows of humans, but current fear of the different have outcast beastmen. They are scorned and publicly harassed, to the point of violence, and thus, the Beastmen have established (or been herded into, depending on interpretation), an asylum city called Anima, where Beastmen can be themselves without fear of judgement or danger.

While initially, I saw this as an allegory for race hatred and xenophobia, throughout the series, there seems to be a more nuanced moral thread being spun.

You see, Beastmen are not just different on the outside, they are very different on the inside. But the allegory is not a black and white "all humans are like this, and all beastmen are like that". Beastmen act different depending on their beast.

Fierce beasts like lions and bulls have no filter on aggression, they will lash out with little reason. Sly beasts like weasels and monkeys have little concept of manners, steal things, and refuse to own up to their mistakes. Free spirited animals like albatross and dolphins have little social awareness, and will do what they want, regardless of rules or consequence.

The main character of the series, Michiru, was born a human, but through an accident, became a beastman recently, and the traits of her beast, a tanooki, start to shine through her persona without her realising. She becomes more curious, assertive, puts herself out there even to her own detriment.

Now the thing about beastmen, as I've hinted at above, is that, they do not always have to take their animal form. In fact, even within Anima City, most beastmen will take on a human form publicly, and perhaps only show their beast side when their emotions get the better of them.

What am I on about?

If it wasn't obvious what the connection I'm trying to make is, I think BNA is exploring the experience of a neurodivergent through the Beastmen. Now I am not diagnosed with any form of mental disorder, so I could be completely talking out of my ass, but hear me out.

Since Beastmen can take on the appearance of a regular human, the extent of their condition can go unnoticed, or seem invisible to the observer. Until they lose their cool, and display their true colours. Then they are branded as freaks, and removed from the same rights and opportunities as neurotypicals, here represented by the "humans".

Now, Beastmen do not fit into one neat box of "not human". Beastmen, (and the neurodivergent) come with a range of quirks, depending on their specific circumstances, and their bestial treats are unique to them. Many mental disorders are on a spectrum, and some may have a lot of difficulty functioning in regular society, while others appear neurotypical to the untrained eye.

My allegory may seem weak on these arguments alone, but the metaphor best comes together with the ending; how humans ultimately choose to approach the problem.

How to "deal with" the Beastmen

In the final arc of the series, a series of fantastical outbursts happen in some individuals, causing them to physically swell and become monstrous, unstoppable. It is referred to as Nirvasyl Syndrome, named after an ancient city where similar mass outbreaks caused mass histeria and loss of life. At first, it seems like the evil scientist human organisation are causing this problem, but it is revealed this is a result of too many beastmen being pressed into one space. The stress overcomes them and they spiral into a state beyond help.

The human scientists offer a solution, a syrum that would remove the "Beast Factor", the part of their DNA that makes them Beastmen. If they weren't Beastmen anymore, they would lack the part of themselves that lose control. But... they would also lose what makes them unique. Michiru is initially on board with this plan, since they used to be classified as just human, but Shirou, a very proud Wolf Beastman, thinks this "solution" is erasure. It is saying that Beastmen would be better of dead than be Beastmen.

My personal reading of this plot point is that of the "Cure to Autism" fallacy. Autism is the cause of a lot of stress in parents and others who think that Autism and other mental disorders can and should be "cured". But the truth of the matter is, these mental disorders are as much a part of these people's psyche as their parent's DNA, and removing the whole syndrome would be erasing the person. If that were even possible to do.

The ultimate ending to Brand New Animal is that within Michiru's DNA, they find a syrum that offers another path. It is a drug that when administered to Beastmen, causes a suppression of the effects of Nirvasyl Syndrome, and the Beastmen still get to be beastmen.

The current focus of many mental illnesses such as Autism has not been on a cure, but on treatment. Instead of completely erasing what makes us unique, we can suppress the worst parts of our conditions so we can function in society as humans. Or as Beastmen.

If you haven't watched Brand New Animal, I wholly reccomend it. The animation style is fun, the characters are interesting, and as I've explained in this article, there is more to its message than meets the eye.

You know something? I recall for Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf Super Rush really liking how all of the characters got sportswear, not just the characters who normally wear dresses that would be impractical for sports.

Makes me hope that for Mario Kart 9, they do that again. Racing suits for everyone that wears clothes! Hopefully no/optional helmets for Miis, should they be playable. (I don't hate the decision, I just find it odd considering no other character wears them and there's no reason Miis should have to wear them when no other character does.)

I also hope that Miis get multiple costumes that change with their favorite color. I liked how Mario Kart Wii had all three Mii costumes (the biker suit, the shirt-and-overalls, and the blouse that looks like Peach's dress) change colors, and I would like something like that again. It's okay if most costumes have set colors, but I would like something like what MKWii did. Maybe even call back to it with overalls based on Mario and Luigi's and a white biker suit modeled after Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina's. (Though that does make me wonder what they'd do if the Mii's favorite color was white.)

Speaking of costumes, it would be cool if most character variants were turned into alternate costumes! Baby characters, obviously, would still be their own slots, but there's no reason for Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Metal Mario, and Pink Gold Peach to all be their own slots instead of alternate costumes for Mario and Peach. Peachette is a complicated case, though, since she's not Peach, but is a completely different weight class from Toadette. I'm not sure what to do with her. Then again, the Inkling genders are treated as alternate costumes on the character select screen despite being different people in-universe, so Peachette being the same slot as Peach probably isn't weird.
