I’m only three and a half chapters away from finishing Nie Wirst Du (so something between 5k and 10k words away) and if I wasn’t working fulltime — and working this weekend, ugh — the fic would probably be finished by the end of the week. I do think I’ll finish it some time in October though. And again. I’m not ready.

readalong riverdale playlist guide
songs have been added in no particular order. sometimes songs tie to broader visions of a musical episode, but some are just “they should have shoehorned this in somewhere in that classic riverdale way”. all songs are musical theater songs. yes i know they did superboy and the invisible girl but they did it wrong (sorry cami, you were great). this is an eternally updating playlist and guide. enjoy!
Corner of the Sky, from Pippin: Archie!!! This literally could happen anywhere at any point in time. What is this song if not Pippin going left Pippin going right. Put this wherever your heart desires. I want to come up with a Pippin musical episode plot because it’s so good. Jughead singing "Simple Joys" over a montage of Archie not dealing with his problems… I’m getting carried away.
Kind of Woman, from Pippin: Veronica would sing this in an entirely unselfaware way. I’m thinking early season two. Isn’t it a beautiful vision?
Superboy and the Invisible Girl, from Next to Normal: THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COOPERS SONG. I’m mentally rewriting the n2n episode with this being a Coopers song.
Could I Leave You?, from Follies: A timeskip Veronica and Hermione duet at their respective shitty husbands. It ends with Hermione resignedly going back to the minutiae of marriage and with Ronnie shooting Chad in the face. Don’t worry about how this messes with plot this isn’t about that.
Your Fault, from Into the Woods: Read this post and envision a beautiful ITW episode.
I’ve Never Been in Love Before, from Guys and Dolls: Okay honestly? Archie and Josie duet. Cuter than "Fight For Me", imo.
Mother Knows Best, from Tangled: Alice, duh. Season one or season seven.
Do You Hear the People Sing?, from Les Mis: Season six union stuff baybee! Hand in hand with "Bread and Roses". It also would be really funny to have KJ and Vanessa, who in my opinion suffer the most from iPhone Voice in the cast, to do such a grand musical-y song. It would not be very good but boy would it be entertaining.
Therapy, from Tick, Tick… Boom!: BUGHEAD DYSFUNCTION DUET YES PLEASE. Let’s say season four. "Exquisite Corpse" vibe, but suppress it all. Maybe the problem’s simply codependency!
Get This Right, from Frozen II: Okay hear me out this is one of the most stupidly romantic songs I have ever heard. An Archie song, obviously. Timeskip Varchie. Maybe he’s actually about to propose, maybe not, doesn’t matter. All that matters is how much I genuinely think KJ could have slayed this song.
Being Alive, from Company: Obviously go read Jughead’s Weird Fantasy right now if you haven’t already. But even in Riverdale canon I would want Jughead to sing this in timeskip. If we’re getting specific it feels very Tabby tucking him in after he gets too drunk at the key party. Sorry for nixing the gay subtext by putting it next to a Jabitha moment jail for a million years for me I know. It could also be after Archie calls him when he’s in NYC. There you go, gay people.
Something’s Coming, from West Side Story: Season one or seven Archie. Just feels very wholesome. I think it would be cute. Could be performed on stage if season one.
How Did We Come to This?, from The Wild Party (Lippa): A Veronica La Bonne Nuit performance that somehow becomes a group number (she’s the only one singing on stage though). Season three. No "Queenie Was A Blonde" tag. I could make an AMV to this song. I should not do that I already have three in the works. But I could.
Run Away with Me, from The Mad Ones: This is purely self-indulgent because I like on-the-road Jarchie and I have a soft spot for this mediocre musical for personal reasons.
Suddenly Seymour, from Little Shop of Horrors: Choni! Choni forever and ever amen. Season seven, I think, when Cheryl finally accepts that she’s a lesbian and is facing homophobia from her family/society/etc. Cheryl is Audrey which is funny because “mama was poor” lol no she wasn’t. They should go all the way and get the rights to change the lyrics to Suddenly Toni. Neither Madelaine nor Vanessa has the right voice for this song even a little bit. I do not care.
Partner in Crime, from Tuck Everlasting: Betty and Archie. In my wildest fantasies this is like a season four flashback to them as kids and we have kid Barchie sing this song but other than that I think this could be a number when they’re hooking up in timeskip. Even though I don’t approve of Barchie hooking up in timeskip because I hate straight people I do think they would slay this. KJ specifically I think would sound great on this, it’s not really a Lili song but oh well. Another version that would be incredibly funny but not as good would be having timeskip Veronica and Reggie sing it about, like, actual crime.
Totally Fucked, from Spring Awakening: Kevin-centric group number in the style of "In" or "Beautiful". Could be anywhere from seasons two to four. Maybe we include the “did you write this?” thing with Betty and Jughead as Melchior. They did some expose for some paper. You know how it is. I wish the Riverdale characters were allowed to say fuck so bad.
Moving Too Fast, from The Last Five Years: Timeskip Jughead. It almost fits but doesn’t in a way that’s oh-so-Riverdale.
The I Love You Song, from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee: Sad. Shared between Betty, Veronica, and Cheryl, but Veronica-centric (could be an unhinged La Bonne Nuit performance from her with cutaways to the other two, actually). Whenever the most amount of parents in this group are in jail. There’s at least one meaningful shot of Jughead reacting.
I’m Breaking Down, from Falsettos: Okay this one is sort of cheating because I don’t necessarily want to fit it into the actual canon of Riverdale I just think if Archie had come out in high school Veronica would have pulled a "The Ladies Who Lunch" and done this at La Bonne Nuit. I think Cami would body that.
What Is This Feeling?, from Wicked: Hear me out. Bret/Jughead duet.
For Good, from Wicked: Betty and Veronica, season seven. Or quad number in late s4/early s5 before the timeskip. I think Lili would sound gorgeous on this, especially the bridge.
Two-Player Game, from Be More Chill: Look Joe Iconis wrote music that was used in Archie: The Musical let me have this okay. Season one Jarchie. Jughead as Michael obviously even though he’s nothing like Michael and Archie is nothing like Jeremy. I just want to make Cole Sprouse say “favowite”.
Mother’s Gonna Make Things Fine, from A New Brain: I have a whole beautiful vision for an A New Brain musical episode that takes place in season four. It’s too long to get into right now but just know it’s there and it’s gorgeous and I’m going to fully flesh it out soon. Once again this is obviously an Alice song, except instead of well-meaning Jewish mom it’s overbearing evil (albeit MILFy) WASP. She’s fretting over Betty because Betty’s fretting about college or Jughead or something who cares. I just need Mädchen to do this.
Change, from A New Brain: This would happen about three quarters of the way through the episode. In classic Riverdale fashion they’d get a little insensitive with it and this would be a Ronnie La Bonne Nuit performance. Change the government kill the mayor! Say that! Even if the mayor is your parent! Especially if the mayor is your parent!
Brain Dead, from A New Brain: This is my favorite part of my A New Brain musical episode. It’s once again a Bughead repression duet. Just imagine the lavender marriage dream sequence anger tango they would do. I also think Cole Sprouse wouldn’t sound too horrible on this song. High praise. No lyric changes Jughead is saying “as the MD lifts me in his cruisy chiseled arms”. I’m getting angry about the fact that I will never get to see this on my screen I’m going to do some breathing exercises to calm down.
Take Me or Leave Me, from RENT: We’re gonna split this up among couples in classic Riverdale fashion. Timeskip, our Maureens are Kevin and Veronica, and our Joannes are Fangs and Archie. The Joannes don’t really work so maybe we’ll pull another classic Riverdale and cut their verses. Unfortunately the best line of the song (“Women, what is it about them? Can’t live with them or without them!”) has to be cut. I wish Choni could also sing this but alas it can’t work in this. Mostly this is an excuse to give Casey Cott more stuff to sing and I think it would be hilarious if he sung this.
Tango: Maureen, from RENT: Honestly, Riverdale both could and would do a really messy RENT episode. I should ruminate further on that. Anyway. I don’t actually know where or how this could work but I want it to be a weirdly sexually charged Vughead duet. But that makes Betty or Archie Maureen, and they are not Maureen… I don’t know. This one’s just in here because I like imagining Cole Sprouse dancing, and because I think Jughead is Jewish and it would be really funny to hear him say “Riverdale Jewish Community Center”. Let’s go with timeskip. She cheated! She cheated! Betty cheated! Fucking cheated! Oh, shit, could this be a Jarchie song in timeskip when Betty and Archie are hooking up? I think it could! Wow. Good work gang.
Razzle Dazzle, from Chicago: I’m also creating a beautiful Chicago musical episode that I don’t have time to detail right now but trust me it’s awesome. It’s in season four, Hermosa is relevant to it. Anyway this is another Kevin-centric group number where everyone is lying to different people about different things. Crucially, Cole Sprouse says the line “they’ll never know you’re just a bagel”.
I Can’t Do It Alone, from Chicago: Veronica’s asking someone to help her scheme!
Mister Cellophane, from Chicago: GAY KEVIN. NEED I SAY MORE.
My Own Best Friend, from Chicago: Beronica duet. Lives would be changed. They’re sort of fighting at this point in the episode so there would be an underlying current of potential hatefucking. But that’s sort of always the case with this song tbh. Also this isn’t on this playlist but imagine Reggie singing "Roxie". So bad. So good.
American Idiot, by Green Day/from American Idiot: Songs from jukebox musicals count too, right? Archie-led group number obviously. Let’s go with season six, but it could be season one or five, too. Maybe he is the faggot America. Jughead says the line “now everybody do the propaganda”. There’s a coordinated dance thing a la "Random Number Generation".
A Cockeyed Optimist, from South Pacific: Archie, duh. Season one, six, or seven. Probably sung directly to a Lodge.
Watch What Happens, from Newsies: Betty, season four. She's doing a piece on the community center that Archie and Mad Dog co-run. I think Lili would slay this honestly. I debated adding the reprise largely so that I could have Cole sing the snake line and to have an iconic "the poor guy's head is spinning" thing side note how can I make Davey and Jack about Jughead and Archie someone needs to shoot me. Anyway we'd cut the stuff about Katherine being into Jack in this song obviously because Betty is unhappily hetero with Jughead. Hashtag women in journalism.
Matchmaker, from Fiddler on the Roof: 50sdale girls. Really strong fun gay visuals exist in my brain for this one.
Anything You Can Do, from Annie Get Your Gun: Vughead. Neither can I!
Let Me Entertain You, from Gypsy: Ronnie duh. Season three-ish La Bonne Nuit Era. Or Polly Amorous.
I Cain't Say No, from Oklahoma!: 50sdale Betty sexual awakening era. I can SEE a beautiful beautiful dream sequence vision where she dances around flirting with Archie and Jughead and Reggie and Veronica can't you.
Tribulation, from Schmigadoon!: Yes this is a TV show not a staged live musical who cares. I don't like Music Man I'm not putting "Ya Got Trouble" on here. Alice gets a patter I don't think Mädchen would be particularly good at it but it would be extremely fun. Season seven most likely, but let's be real it could come at any point in the show.
Naughty Baby, from Crazy for You: You think I'm about to say Veronica or perhaps Cheryl don't you. WRONG Dark Betty. Oh it would be so cringe so painful so bad so terrible. It must happen. I don't know when in the show it happens it could literally be any time in s1-6.
With One Look, from Sunset Boulevard: Ronnie... I'm thinking s5 Riverbucks era.
that's all i have for now but there's more to come :]

Really happy that there’s more people complaining about the people who interpret Dirk and Rose’s relationship in BC as incest and gross.
Imo, if you ship them then cool! I’m not talking about y’all and you’re good to go!
But if you interpret their relationship as incest and are discussed to read BC because of it, that’s just a YOU issue. I never saw their bond as incest. It was never meant to be incest. There’s a one off joke-ish thing that Dave mentions about incest, but incest jokes and remarks are everywhere in HS and BC. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. “Why would Rose leave her loving wife behind?” “Must be incest”. Is kinda how the conversation read in the Epilogues imo. It’s just a dysfunctional familial dynamic as they both struggle to find someone who understands them in their ascended state. Do y’all forget that Dirk is exclusively gay in canon and Rose is all but confirmed in the text itself to be exclusively lesbian in canon? I’m all for headcanons that diverge from the canon material, I don’t have a problem if people ship either with the opposite gender. But if you are specifically talking about the canon material, you cannot ignore how they are ment to be portrayed and what their characters canonically are.
I’m happy that other people have some critical thinking skills and are able to deal the relationship how it was meant to be. I remember that it wasn’t all that long ago when the majority of folks just thought it was incest and hated the comic because of it. Honestly, I’m glad people can understand dysfunctional family dynamics and codependency in a non romantic context and I’m not alone in this interpretation anymore lol.

Personally I'm v curious about Mitsue and Sunnie :0 I wanna know why they're so sad!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO first off, all about mitsue >:))
mitsue is a meek and insecure person who be codependent af. her sister, mei fugii is someone she relies on to make decisions for her. often times, she simply sticks close and just follows her lead. this means that her along with her sister are snarky assholes who think theyre better than everyone. for a while, shes mostly mei's hype man ykno how it goes "hah good one, mei" "you're so right, sis" "you're sooo funny" its worth noting that mei is not a nice sister. shes constantly judging and disregarding mitsue. theyre v dysfunctional
HOWEVER at hopes peak, being the disaster lesbian she is, she falls head over heals for belle heartly the ultimate baker:)
so for a while she simply trails after belle like a lost puppy because shes nice to her. however, unfortunately she has no idea how to express emotions so just bullies her akjsadg belle is the ultimate pushover cuz she gets bullied and shes like "oh ok :) i made you strawberry pastries :) love you" and mitsues like's D:< !!!??? FUCK
SO BASICALLY fast forward to chapter 3 in the killing game and her sister, mei effing murders someone (yumna). when mei demands that mitsue help her cover it up, mitsue actually refuses, shockingly. as a last resort, mei runs to the roof and mitsue goes to follow her fearing what she'll do (unknown to her, belle is not far behind) when she gets to the roof, her sister threatens her catching mitsue completely of gaurd. mei goes to push her off the roof when suddenly belle interjects and pushes mei off the roof instead.
and bada bing bado boom. in an instant she lost her sister and her first love's fate was sealed
mitsue practically makes belle promise to not say anything abt anything. during the trial, mitsue is incredibly difficult and unhelpful, constantly interjecting and leading the class astray. all suspicion is on her until belle decides to lead the class to the right culprit. and after that, the trial is over
mitsue is devastated as belle says her last words to her. she doesnt watch her execution.
after that, mitsue is very quiet and reserved until she slowly opens up to the others and she makes friends and blah blah ykno how it goes
anyways she makes it through the killing game so shes alive and well!

NOW all about sunnie eheh
dw sunnie's story wont be as long ajsfgkash theyre still a wip
so basically sunnie just a mess of a human being who is horribly nervous all the time.
sunnie became the ult comic purely by chance. the circumstances in and itself is a joke. an old stand up routine went viral and next thing they knew, their comedy career skyrocketed (to their horror). then they were accepted into hopes peak academy (to their horror). people expecting sunnie to be funny is their biggest fear akjhkasf
basically, sunnie is a comedian whos too fucking nervous to actually be funny
in the killing game, sunnie's roommate is good ol strange kisshoten. the two of them form an unlikely bond blah blah besties
anyways their relationship and story is a work in progress sooo feel free to give me ideas or whatever kgefhefjkdjfg
also sunnie is aliveeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Book Recommendations? Book Recommendations!
This is the list of books I've read during the pandemic, and let me tell you, I am doing all sorts of decision paralysis on what I should read next. If any of y'all vibe with these, do you have anything you'd recommend? Other than the obvious sequels. Ideally nothing too YA-ish, right now.
In reverse chronological order: Skyward, Ancillary Justice, A Desolation Called Peace, A Memory Called Empire, Spinning Silver, Empress of Forever, Red Mars, The Priory Of The Orange Tree, This Is How You Lose The Time War, Harrow the Ninth, Gideon the Ninth, Rhythm of War, Dawnshard, The Ruin of Angels, and Four Roads Cross. I've put a little review of each of them under the cut!
Skyward, by Brandon Sanderson, 2018. Your usual story about an outcast, misunderstood teenage girl finding an injured dragon and nursing it back to health, except instead of a dragon it's a starfighter spaceship. Really solid YA scifi with Sanderson's trademark meticulous worldbuilding. An enjoyable read, though much lighter than his usual epic fantasy.
Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie, 2013. Honestly, I didn't enjoy this one. It was pitched as a queer science fiction space opera, but the "queer" bit was gimmicky and falls apart if you think about it, I didn't find the characters interesting, and the plot didn't even try to hide that it was just a list of checkboxes. Felt like a YA novel that refused to admit it. This is the only book on this list that I personally wouldn't recommend. But all my friends seemed to enjoy it, so I might be the odd one out here.
A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace, by Arkadiy Martine, 2019 and 2021. The first two books in what will presumably be a trilogy, and the best stories I've read in a long time. Twisty political thrillers wrapped up in gorgeous science fiction, and by FAR my favorite books on this list. Vibrant characters with nuanced relationships, scifi worldbuilding that is frankly breathtaking, a captivating story, and an all-around delight to read. Language, identity, colonialism/imperialism, and cultural assimilation are tackled through the lens of scifi. In my opinion, this is what science fiction should be. Also there are lesbians. Above every other book here I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE ONES. Martine seriously earned her Hugo Award.
Spinning Silver, by Naomi Novik, 2018. Folklore-fantasy about three young women — the daughter of a jewish moneylender, a poor peasant girl from an abusive home, and the daughter of a nobleman who wants to marry her to the Tsar — caught up in a conflict between the Faerie realms, the human world, and something much more sinister than either. Highly recommend, especially if you're jewish.
Empress of Forever, by Max Gladstone, 2019. A fantastical science fiction breakneck-pace adventure romp that puts its foot on the gas in Chapter 2 and doesn't let up. It's also quite explicitly a genderbent retelling of the classic Chinese epic Journey to the West, with more lesbians this time. This book has all kinds of energy, extremely fun characters with more depth than you'd expect, and some bonkers high-concept SF. Highly recommend if you like swashbuckling found-family adventure stories, and wlw romance.
Red Mars, by Kim Stanley Robinson, 1992. Every book, movie, and TV show about colonizing Mars since Red Mars was written owes pretty much everything to this book. It can be a bit dense if you're not up for lengthy (but gorgeous!) descriptions of Martian landscapes, and there are one or two bits where you just have to keep in mind that it was the 90's and this was quite progressive for its day. That being said, I am a sucker for a two-page description of a martian sunset. If crunchy hard-science fiction thrillers (emphasis on the "science") are your thing, I recommend this one. I'll read the sequels (Blue Mars and Green Mars) at some point.
The Priory of the Orange Tree, by Samantha Shannon, 2019. The prose and plot read like classic high fantasy, but with a modern eye towards character-driven storytelling. It's not often that you get something that feels so classic and so modern at the same time. Scratches that Lord of the Rings itch, with Queens and dragons and glorious heroes, but queer romance and a heavy focus on character development makes this a modern fantasy classic. Highly recommend if you like doorstopper-length high fantasy, and lesbians.
This Is How You Lose The Time War, by Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar, 2019. A novella, you can read it in a couple of days — or a single marathon sitting, if you get into it. Gladstone (same author as Empress of Forever) and El-Mohtar take turns writing letters back and forth from time-traveling spies of rival timelines: Red works for the post-singularity mechanical Agency, and Blue fights for the Garden, a post-solarpunk biofuture. Their letters start out as taunts, and gradually change in tone as each develops a grudging respect for her rival. That rivalry blossoms — or compiles — into something deeper. It's emotional and raw, and it cartwheels merrily down the tightrope of fantasy, science fiction, and poetry. Highly recommend, though the flowery prose and gleeful disregard for explaining itself to the audience might be off-putting for some.
Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, 2019 and 2020. I'll let the pull quote from on the cover of Gideon from Charles Stross' review describe these: "Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space! Decadent nobles vie to serve the deathless emperor! Skeletons!" This one is horrifying, and it's funny, but I wouldn't call it comedy-horror. It kind of defies genre, outside the very broadest scope of "science fantasy." Read it if you like lots of gore, graphic violence, madcap humor, and extremely unhealthy, codependent, dysfunctional relationships that are always on the verge of self-destructing into multiple-homicide. Highly recommend.
Rhythm of War and Dawnshard, by Brandon Sanderson, 2020. Rhythm of War is book 4 of the Stormlight Archives, one of several epic fantasy series by Brandon Sanderson. Dawnshard is a novella set between books 3 and 4. This is the same author as Skyward, but intended for a more mature audience. Stormlight is definitely my favorite epic fantasy series, and I've read a lot of epic fantasy. These books have some extremely interesting takes on racism, mental illness, trauma, disability, identity, family, and regret, far more so than pretty much any other high fantasy I've read. The first book is The Way of Kings, and if you like bigass doorstopper multi-book fantasy series, The Stormlight Archives should be at the top of your list.
Four Roads Cross and The Ruin of Angels, by Max Gladstone, 2016 and 2017. While Empress of Forever and Time War were standalone novels, these are books 5 and 6 in Gladstone's Craft Sequence, and they are absolutely brilliant. This is a world where about sixty years ago, humankind went to war with the Gods, and the Gods lost. "Magic" in this world is more or less synonymous with "legal contracts," where you can literally sell your soul to your student loan company and resurrecting a dead god is basically bankruptcy restructuring. "Necromancer" is roughly synonymous with "lawyer." The first five books can be read more-or-less out of order, but I recommend you start with Three Parts Dead. Gladstone is probably my favorite author these days. Everything he writes feel like it could be a poem. Also, once again, lesbians.
I am really not sure why about 2/3 of these books are about lesbians. Like seriously, I went into almost all of these books completely cold. The only ones where I knew ahead of time to expect lesbians were the Locked Tomb books, and The Priory of the Orange Tree. I don't know if this is just because a lot of modern scifi and fantasy has lesbians, or if all my friends who recommend me books are queer, or if it's just a coincidence, but hey, I'm not complaining.

i realized i never talked about the dysfunctional lesbian duo. who might not actually end up lesbians because gender is usually one of the last things i decide about a character. but i say lesbians becaise i saw liz and the bluebird a couple years ago and i will now live forever in its shadow. movie was so good i wanted to try my hand at codependent lesbian girls. this would be my second wol! out of like 30-50 characters... and like albinnaux they're mostly sticking to the canon story. like noyu and lau they started because i was interested in a dynamic. i was also influenced by evangelion ala sticking adolencents in traumatizing situations and expect them to save the world. the two of them are 16.
also the alternative meme name for limsa catboy is Bagel Bite. every time i see a clearly dnd character name like Eliza Northwind i roll my eyes especially when they treat it an an actual name instead of like Baja Blast which everyone knows in an alias. the northwind clan ah hahahahaha. which is why i feel like if i used that name scheme people would think i was being serious instead of satirical. whereas Bagel Bite or like Funfetti Poptart will always be a joke whether people get that im making fun of their wols or not. same with cookie cookie. its a win win scenario. aaa but i really want to mock those Eliza Northwind players. btw the name scheme is “edgy” name a 11 year old would choose (which is valid actaully) and last name is descriptor+noun (which is the part i actually have problems with, since it disregards canon lore. its a lazy “fantasy” name)

Friends 1x13 – The One With the Boobies
In a nutshell: Phoebe is dating Roger, a psychologist. Everyone hates that guy. Joey’s father has an affair. Everyone is going boobies and penis sighting.
Chandler: Chandler walks in on Rachel naked and sees her nippular area. Phoebe’s boyfriend tells Chandler that he’s a funny guy but he wouldn’t want to be there once the laughter stops since Chandler clearly uses humour to keep people at a distance because of his intimacy issues. And well, duh!
Joey: Joey’s father is in town visiting, and I think this will be his and Joey’s mom’s first and only appearance if I remember correctly. Joey overhears his father talking lovingly on the phone and, spoiler alert, he wasn’t talking to Joey’s mom. They have a very open conversation and to be fair, Joey reacts very unJoey-like? In later seasons, he has the tendency to overreact to any sudden and abrupt changes, but here, he’s chilling and cooking with his dad while his dad explains that he’s been cheating on his mom FOR SIX YEARS and that he’s in love with both women. When his father’s girlfriend pays him a visit, Joey urges his father to either break up with his girlfriend or come clean with his wife. Very mature advice, indeed. Seeing his father cheating on his mom makes Joey wonder if he’s ready to have a mature, grown-up relationship, something that he will not ponder over again for a very long time. Little did he know that his mother was aware of the affair and actually enjoyed how it had improved their marriage. After all of Joey’s meddling, things go back to the way they were.
Monica: The shrink suggests that Monica overeats because she uses food in lieu of love. Well, duh! Joey sees Monica’s boobies when he was trying to get back at Rachel, and so the episode ends with Monica walking in on Joey’s dad as she was trying to get a glimpse of Joey’s pee-pee.
Phoebe: Apparently, she’s been dating this shrink guy and she seems to be very into him although for some reason he doesn’t strike me as Phoebe’s type. Anyway, he’s one of those people who can’t or won’t leave their work at work and he keeps analyzing everyone. Phoebe tells Roger that her friends don’t like him and he seems to take it quite well at first, but then he has a meltdown and tells her that they have a codependent, emotionally stunted, dysfunctional group dynamic. And again, duh!
Rachel: Rachel is at first very embarrassed about Chandler seeing her breasts, but then gets even more miffed when he describes them as “nice.” Rachel feels the only way to overcome the embarrassment is for her to see Chandler’s penis. While everyone’s having this existential crisis over Roger’s analysis of their personas, Rachel has a meltdown over… her Weebles toys. Rachel then tries to see Chandler naked in the shower, but she sees Joey’s thing instead.
Ross: Roger The Shrink tells Ross that he probably married Carol knowing that she was a lesbian because he actually wanted the marriage to fail to compensate for overshadowing his sister. No duh. Ross is a good brother, but not that good. Ross kind of handles this badly, arguing he doesn’t feel responsible for Monica’s failures, explicitly stating then that he kind of agrees with their parents. Ross, you have been the worst in this episode.

(knowing this is a bad plan but) Aerti
yeah yeah laugh it up
D
And thus on that day, Squid was outed as a fake lesbian for not giving two shits about the main wlw ship in this fandom despite having three major fics planned with it, revealing it was done purely to cross it off the list, and was Cancelled.
Look I’m not big into romance anyway and I just... don’t get Aerti. I mean i do, it’s Gay, so there’s that, but there’s not a lot drawing me to romances in general. Stuff like Clo//ti have that codependent angle going on that I can appreciate it because it ties so easily into the meaty character stuff that I do like, but Aerti has little to no horrible dysfunction that I’m aware of to really get me invested. So, like... it’s there, I guess. That’s cool.
Also to a much lesser degree I had it poisoned for me a while back by a really gross, self-righteous roleplayer but I’ve had more time to get over that and it isn’t constantly in my face the way some Certain Other Fans are with their worst members.
I guess I gotta hand in my gay card now. Just gimme three to five business days, I’ll get to it eventually..

QT Says: On Codependent Relationships
'Tis the season for a lot of things. As we get into winter it's now officially "cuffing season," when some folks settle into relationships to ride through the cold, dark months ahead. Other folks are getting ready to leave for the semester, or are traveling to visit family, and will be (however briefly) separated from their partners and really close friends.
For some folks, that brief separation can be uncomfortable or not ideal—it is totally normal to miss your friends and partner(s)!—but it’s still manageable. And for others, the idea of even a short time away from a partner or friend can seem impossibly painful. As in, "I can't live without you" or "they won't be okay without me"-level painful. Which brings us to today's topic: codependency.
Often mistaken for intimacy or caring, codependency takes that interpersonal closeness and crosses a line—or all the lines, really. Here's Scarleteen's definition of codependency:
"A term used to describe people who become so dependent on someone else, they make their own selves and lives about that other person. Often, this happens because someone very much wants to avoid themselves, or being by themselves, rather than really getting closer to anyone, including themselves. Codependence is usually based in big fears of being abandoned or alone."
Here's another definition:
"Codependency is characterized by a person belonging to a dysfunctional, one-sided relationship where one person relies on the other for meeting nearly all of their emotional and self-esteem needs. It also describes a relationship that enables another person to maintain their irresponsible, addictive, or underachieving behavior."
Whatever causes it's rooted in, codependency creates an enmeshment “ where one partner completely gives themselves over to the needs of the other partner. And we're not talking about someone going out of their way to drop off soup at their boyfriend's apartment after work because he got the flu. Codependency usually looks like one or both partners completely erasing the boundaries between them as two separate people, resulting in one partner completely relying on the other, both emotionally and in their everyday life.
Humans are social creatures. We rely on each other for emotional support and companionship in friendships, romantic and sexual relationships, and even as peers or coworkers. But it's when over-reliance begins to develop, and boundaries begin to be  ignored or eliminated, it might be time to reassess your relationship. Just a refresher, here's a great definition of exactly what boundaries are:
"Boundaries are sort of an imaginary line between you and others. It divides up what’s yours and somebody else’s, and that applies not only to your body, money, and belongings, but also to your feelings, thoughts and needs."
Which is to say, if the difference between your wants and desires and those of your partner are indistinct, or you feel completely responsible for your partner's emotional state, the boundaries between the two of you may be unhealthily shaky. No matter how "caring" the intentions, one partner taking control over another's life isn't healthy for either of you.
Here's the thing, some relationships can have codependent elements without being completely off-the-rails "drop everything and never talk to this person" unsalvageable. The issue is, when the lines between you and your partner or friends are too blurred, you can't be yourself, because there is no "self." There's just you in this relationship, and no "you" who exists outside of it. And you can't be your most authentic self if your whole sense of self is wrapped up in someone else's thoughts, opinions and relationship to you.
If you feel like you might be involved in a codependent relationship, here are some more resources for you:
Scarleteen's piece on intimacy covers a lot of ground, including codependency and enmeshment.

whaaat Hadestown sounds awesome!!! i’ll definitely check both those out but it sounds like Hadestown is like, the style of my dreams. also anything that starts as a folk opera is awesome bc i love the concept of a folk opera. follow up: i’ve seen some things about Be More Chill and somehow missed its jump to Broadway? what’s it about?
Sorry I took a day to get back to you, musical anon, but I just had to write my penultimate final first thing this morning! Hadestown is the style of everyone’s dreams, and I really hope you like it when you do check it out. It’s incredibly unique.
As to your second query, permit me to have some obnoxious gif usage because life is short and I am now permanently on my bullshit. And, well. You just asked me, Coco, about Be More Chill.
Tumblr media
WELCOME TO HELL. YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE NOW.
(Festive, right?)
So!
Be More Chill is a very loose adaptation of a (vastly different and quite offensive) 2004 novel by the same name. It did the work of my dreams, which is combine my two favourite genres, science fiction and musical theatre, in a big way, while also stealth being a narrative about mental health, recovery, friendship, love, and sexy computers.  Also, the songs are absolute bops and the music style is contemporary but still unmistakably Broadway. It’s also openly inspired by Little Shop of Horrors (while also being very much in the vein of other wacky, culty musicals like Reefer Madness, a bit of Rocky Horror thrown in, etc), which is a major plus.
It’s a darkly hilarious, sci-fi-horror-teen drama-romance-musical, in short.
In long??? A little gist:
So, our leading man, Jeremy Heere, is a (canonically Jewish! Canonically Jewish! CANONICALLY JEWISH!!!) typical high school geeky outcast who struggles with severe anxiety, self hatred, and a vast panoply of other issues. He’s badly bullied, only has one friend, Michael Mell, who is quite literally the savior of the universe, and crushes on the local theatre kid (and a literal queen), Christine Canigula. In an effort to impress her, he takes the advice of the local bully, Rich, and buys a pill from the back of a Payless shoe store called a SQUIP (short for Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor), which, if ingested and activated by Mountain Dew (just go with it I promise it’s worth it), installs a computer chip in his brain that can manifest the illusion only he can see of a personification that is an intensely attractive person (has been cast as multiple genders depending on the production!!!) who will instruct him on what the right thing to do or say is so that he can overcome his perceived social and personal failings, and improve himself, and maybe get the girl.
Of course, this thing goes evil, and absolute epic mayhem ensues.
Where do I even start with what I love about this musical?
The characters are incredibly true to life; literally nobody is who they seem to be in terms of typical high school, sci fi, or even theatre tropes. which is part of the ultimate message (and I love that!!!) Jeremy’s narrative is very much a subversion of the typical entitled-nerd-boy-goes-wild-trying-to-get-the-girl, because his actions and mistakes are steeped very much in long lasting mental health struggles (he literally mentions having to go to the nurse constantly due to his anxiety attacks), as well as a heartrendingly realistic and depressing home life, and the show is very clear about this, pulling no punches. He’s flawed, he’s sweet, he’s funny, he’s tragic, he’s redemptive, he’s just…wonderful.
Michael, who in any other show would be ‘the goofy best friend’ character and that’s it gets an incredible arc showing his brilliance, and his own inner demons, including the big showstopper Michael In The Bathroom, which is famous not only for being an incredible song, but because it goes there; it depicts the entirety of a severe panic attack in gut-wrenching detail. All set to awesome music, of course. His depth is revealed in that the otherwise cheerful, happy-go-lucky best friend character whose life seems to revolve around the protagonist’s brought to the logical conclusion of this archetype; extreme codependency and other mental health struggles. This is by no means all that he is – I’d explain why, and what an incredible, positive, heroic character he is, but I won’t dare spoil where his arc ends up going.
Christine Canigula, our leading lady, is a badass feminist and so much more than a perky theatre kid; she’s shown to struggle much in the same ways Jeremy and Michael do, she’s politically involved and dedicated, while still being desperately uncertain about what to do with her life, her entire character is dedicated to subverting expectations (all her big numbers end with a subverted rhyme to prove this!!), she’s developed so much more than other love interest characters, and is in so many ways so much more than a love interest. She’s fiercely intelligent, but tempted to take the easy route to popularity in different ways than Jeremy, while being more inclined to being true to herself, and her autonomy drives the plot. She’s also canonically a woc who has ADHD and she’s a gun control advocate. Like??? When will your faves ever?  Her romance is believable and wonderful and driven by what she wants and her arc, while subtle, is integral to the plot.
I could do a paragraph for each character (and if you’re on my blog, I’ll probably get around to writing meta for each of them), but the popular kids, the bullies, even the apparently useless parent character…none of them are what they seem. As for the SQUIP, I don’t dare reveal the awesomeness of that particular villain, except to say that it’s a metaphor for…a number of things, while incredibly enthralling, and The Pitiful Children, the big villain song, is honestly up there with any of your Disney villains for a truly epic sci-fi experience. It’s a completely irredeemable villain whose appeal lies in its irredeemability, especially fascinating because it’s a machine, and hence gains no sadistic pleasure from it’s evildoing; it merely seeks results, which is just chilling.
The cast is incredibly diverse, and there is a TON of LGBT+ representation, including Michael having lesbian mothers, a completely non-stereotyped bisexual male character who ACTUALLY CALLS HIMSELF BISEXUAL OUT LOUD, and who is arguably the most tragic character in the show, but that tragedy is separate almost entirely from his orientation, and more.
While being lighthearted sci-fi fare, it deals pretty straightforwardly with a number of heavy topics, such as mental illness, suicidal ideation, extreme loneliness, self-hatred, isolation,  trauma, abuse, sexual orientation, dysfunctional families, dysfunctional friendships, existential crises, near-death experiences, brainwashing, addiction, bullying, torture (of the sci-fi variety but still pretty damn hard to watch), and even (albeit briefly, but it still bears mention) male sexual assault, and handles all of them exceptionally well, never overdoing it on any of them (they’re interwoven and sometimes entirely subtextual to the plot) but also being honest enough about the fact that some of our darkest moments include incredibly dark comedy, all while never making light of these serious issues. That being said, consider this the trigger warning paragraph if any of that’s a limit for you! They’re so wonderfully balanced by a narrative of healing and forgiveness and loyalty and love that it makes the story all the stronger; seeing everyone facing these awful things, and being able to overcome them together.
It’s also the type of sci-fi that I love; the kind that, like Back to the Future, Weird Science, and Stranger Things embraces a retro aesthetic, and is a smaller, singular fantastical/sci-fi element contained in a setting that is otherwise very recognizable to our world; the kind of adventures you feel like you could have between your own classes. The sci-fi effects and costumes are incredible, especially in Act 2.
AND, and and and, It’s an underdog story within an underdog story; it opened in a regional theatre in Jersey for a limited run in 2015 and closed very quickly, and everyone assumed it would never be picked up again, but in Winter 2017, it blew up by sheer word of mouth due to a combination of the original cast album being on Spotify and the popularity of certain amateur productions since it got licenced; eventually, it got a 2017 regional theatre revival at Exit 82, and that sparked an online fandom so strong that the show got a second chance with an off-Broadway run that happened this past summer, which in turn got so successful that the show is transferring to Broadway. All the way from a seemingly failed regional limited run, with most of the original cast (who are darlings, as are the creators, incredibly empathetic people bringing this wonderful, weird, warm story to the forefront). And who doesn’t love the meta of the show itself being an underdog when the cast is entirely of underdogs?
Just. Please. Do yourself a favour and check it out. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll cheer.  I heard about it only peripherally since around mid-2017 ish and then only really got into it this past May/June, and….gosh. My life’s gotten so much better since. I’ve met dear friends through the fandom, dragged other dear friends into this glorious pit, and the show, as a narrative of healing, is helping to heal me, too.
Possibly a new all-time favourite.

For once I don't feel like asking advice would be a sign of weakness.
I WANT AND DESERVE MORE. I WANT TO LIVE. I DONT WANT TO KEEP WANTING TO DIE. I DONT WANT THIS AND I WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT. LIFE AND STRENGTH AND LOVE SEEMS SO FAR AWAY TIL RECENTLY. BUT IM STILL SO TRAUMATIZED AND SO PRONE TO DEREALIZING. HEALTH AND HAPPINESS ISNT A PRIVILEGE RIGHT...? I WANT MORE. ISNT LIFE A RIGHT
Even if my parents have done their middle class most to feed house and even help get me out of credit pits and even though they aren't physically abusive they have been abusive to my older sister who committed suicide after secretly being a victim of child sexual assault dismissive neglectful emotionally mute narcissistic feudalistic and ableist and rape apologists. I HAVE built up this role and this mask where I am tolerable to them so they do not find me problematic day to day. I keep telling myself that I can be bitter but I just can't shake this feeling that maybe I'm just an entitled millennial who got cucked and I'm wrong. But I have been formulating a plan to get a diploma while I am under their roof then run away one night with some money saved and live alone instead of doing this song and dance of bad class analysis where I pretend like I'm not supposed to be doing anything remotely political just put my head down work make money be less of an embarassment go to a bank get loans just to get degrees certificates jobs get cars move around be socially pleasant meet someone to make babies with (I'm bisexual/pansexual and poly...But I am trans and my parents have major issues confronting that even if they pretend to be absolutely progressive minded" (TM) like being literate and half way informed is the same thing as actually really thinking about microaggressions and oppressive behaviours they enact in oorder to be better supports which they haven't) and while their ~support~ of me being mentally ill/disabled and actively suicidal is something that did come across the first week of our bereavement--literal days before the funeral-- their twisted toxic manner of mourning has made me suicidal at least three times as of 27th December 2018; and their responses to coming out as transmasculine and bi was dont get all PC snowflake on us (Read:shut up about it unless we feel ready to go ask you curtly and rudely) and then two days after when I actually felt soft and tender enough to say I had visions of dying violently because of how terribly small and useless I currently feel they begged and begged me to make calls on my own and handle things myself because Hey We Are Really The Ones Who Are Suffering And Mourning Why Are TWO of Our Daughters Suicidal I Am Truly Suffering. Implied--"we will have insurance cover this therapy shit you should be happy haven't we mentioned it to your idiot face already just leave us alone about this shit". I may have had to survive day after day through my depression since 2014 by thinking they weren't people to open up to but that doesn't mean that they can say that. Imply that. They CANNOT
They cannot.
But they did.
They did it. They fucking did that when my heart finally came around to a place of, "Well I understand that they haven't experienced surviving and being a victim of violence and victim blaming and being transgender is foreign and even vilified so that's fair and here are all their siblings coming to the funeral to feed and help us in the aftermath and to keep us housed through all the preparations so how come, among and amidst all this compassion, they seem so hit by Stupid Bitch disease? Wtf why *shouldnt* anybody deal with depression by themself!
" I don't know that all the fear you felt before this bereavement of being in the same room holds up when they can just be seen as foolish and immature. You can 100% deal through therapy with the ableism and gaslighting you endured the silence around your constant issues with being fired at jobs you hated the the moments of realizing they want to be white passing and are sociopathically happy to be alone and have no hobbies and live in codependent relationships where they treat others like infant children or wayward siblings who need a firm hand but not heart to heart talks or reassurances or loving toughness... so just try to be uncomfortable and just shore up and bolster your underlying hope of seeing your long held affectionate blindly loyal love reciprocated.
"Keep up that small hope and bury all your pain and your furious and sour resentment if it means their happiness is number one in my life. Just do it Isagani! Do that... because it is Good." I tried it and I fell apart. I functioned for a week or two but now I am just as prone to sleeping and alcoholism and moreover, I want to escape but now I feel like hiding my desires to just pay my own way through art college and transitioning in a nearby city is nothing compared to our long history of living as a dysfunctional but somewhat stable household. /:
I FEEL like I understand I should leave but I suddenly feel ... IDK like I'm sinning before Jesus himself. What would it mean to pick up a backpack my laptop and a suitcase of clothes and some money and just go...and... Wouldn't it destroy their happiness and their legitimacy as NOT bigoted parents and NOT bad community members and NOT hypocritical and NOT at all to be blamed. ////:
I would leave them a note... I would say to meet me in 2027 in a town I feel has a small leftist community called Tavistock in South Devon in Britain and I would leave a blog entry where I detail my grief and my pain.
I wrote the post one evening on the 19th where I realized I've been covering for them even though my little lesbian moderately autistic and anxious sister had her birthday and needs my brutal honesty and my parents to stop dismissing me the most.
It (the blog post that is) speaks to my analysis of their issues and I don't want to leave without a note because they might feel like I have just gone away in a panic and might turn up dead just as my late sister did... What I want to know is should I make an escape, or should I stay with them.
I need to decide but I feel so confused. Please help I think I ... can't see a way out

just out of interest, on the topic of community, what do you think of frankie dart as a character/ season 6 of community in general?
oooh good question!
i like frankie a lot. i find her both compelling and endearing, and i think she was honestly underutilized due to how amazing her character was. she’s really kind and tries to be understanding, even when dropped into a quagmire of dysfunction and codependency. she’s really competent and intelligent, but also quite awkward and dorky in really cute ways. she’s aloof and holds people at a distance, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t care about the people around her. her relationships with everyone are all really good in their own ways– especially with annie, as she serves as almost a lesbian mentor to her and it’s really cute. i think if she’d had more time to be explored as a character, even more layers would have been peeled back, and all of them would have been compelling.
in terms of season 6 as a whole, i mostly like it, but mainly as a self-contained story. it feels very tonally and structurally different from, as abed would say, “the golden age,” but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its own merits. even though troy and shirley and pierce are gone for their own respective reasons, it forces new cast dynamics to develop. for example, the burgeoning sibling relationship between abed and annie that gets explored is really adorable, and the jeff/abed dynamic that was the supposedly the core of the show (at least in s1) gets to resurface due to the fact that abed is now incapable of having storylines with troy (which i don’t want to say became a crutch for the writers in terms of their characters, because that would imply that every single one of their interactions wasn’t my lifeblood, but it did limit their respective dynamics with other cast members getting explored).
additionally, s6 feels like what early s1 was trying to be: a show about a band of loveable misfits at a shitty community college. it’s not the overly-ambitious, high-concept television of its heyday, but it offers us legitimate, consistent character development in a way the conceptual homage episodes fundamentally could not. it’s dark, and witty, and the jokes mainly land, and each episode is a self-contained story that relies on the acting talent and the script to make it work.
but there is a negative space that exists in s6: the absence of shirley is potent, at least for me. troy’s departure, while deeply sad, was necessary to his character development. it felt earned; he had to leave to truly progress. so did annie, so did abed. and if shirley’s departure had been treated in a similar way to troy, abed, and annie’s– which were all handled really well and true-to-character– i think i wouldn’t have missed her so much. but the writers were lazy, and they did not conclude her arc, only cut her out of the show and assumed their role was done. and it’s not like i don’t respect ynb’s choice to leave the show, but it’s because i love her so much that i cannot forgive the fact that they did not put effort into sending her off in a way that felt real and honest.
and the season 6 finale is honestly perfect. s6 is basically one long finale, a gradual letting-go of greendale, but the final episode of the final season seals it for me. jeff lets annie go, also cognizant of the fact that she was never “his” to begin with. she kisses him solely for his sake, and then goes to live her best (lesbian) life, completely severed from whatever parts of greendale she doesn’t want to take with her (cough cough jeff). abed also severs ties, and moves to la. and it’s implied that neither annie nor abed (nor troy, for that matter, now that abed lives elsewhere) will be coming back – not in the episode itself, but in the natural progression of their arcs as a whole. meanwhile, britta and jeff, the sole remaining members of the original study group, sit and have a drink at a bar with their friends. it was never their place to leave greendale, they don’t deserve to. but they deserve each other, and they deserve the comfort and camaraderie that greendale provides.

Five years ago, Dee flunked out of college, left Philadelphia, and moved to Los Angeles with dreams of being a movie star. Now, she's divorced twice over, unemployed, asking her parents for rent money, and maybe in some denial about the reasons for all of the above. Dee comes home for Thanksgiving to get in her parents' good graces, and accidentally runs into her estranged brother on the street smoking and dressed like a prostitute. It seems like the last five years have not been kind to either of them. They go for a walk, and talk about how they got here.
