Has it surprised you that some comments are really critical of hiuh laurent right now, or is that what you were expecting at this point in the story?

yes and no.

it doesn't surprise me that readers think laurent is awful. we don't have his POV, he hasn't opened up to damen yet about everything that has been going on, and, additionally, because we are stuck in damen's head and he doesn't really think about laurent and nicaise's living situation other than when a very specific problem arises (see: nicaise running away, nicaise breaking the paperweight), i think it's easy for the reader to also dismiss or brush off how awful nicaise can be towards laurent. there is also the matter of damen starting to suspect that the start of their relationship was anything but organic, that it might have been fueled by laurent's financial struggles, etc. laurent has also been very dependant on damen's help lately, which doesn't help people's image of him.

what is surprising to me (though not in a bad way) is that I thought for sure people would hate damen until the very end of the fic. I hoped that that wouldn't be the case, but because of the feedback I received in early chapters I thought everyone would be very reluctant to try and see things from his perspective and be understanding and empathetic. that hasn't been the case. yes, people point out his flaws and inconsistencies, people remember the awful things he's said and done, but I think they've come to understand the underlying themes of the fic: there is room for growth if you make room for growth, growth is uncomfortable and will cost you greatly, and you can (and mostly already) love people who are deeply flawed.

even though I haven't replied, I do read people's comments on the fic. I'm not put off by any of them. if anything, I'm excited to see who they'll blame for things to come.
