Writing Notes: Hard Science Fiction
Tumblr media
Hard science fiction - a subgenre of science fiction writing that emphasizes scientific accuracy and precise technical detail as part of its world-building.
When these science fiction stories touch on real-world topics like space travel, earth science, computer advancements, and artificial intelligence, they do so with an eye toward accuracy.
Hard science fiction also goes by shortened names like “hard sci-fi” and “hard SF.”
Prominent awards in the hard science fiction space include the Hugo Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Nebula Award, and the Jupiter Award.
Hard sci-fi contrasts with another type of science fiction writing that can be called soft science fiction.
Soft sci-fi novels and movies deal with topics that do not comport with science as we understand it.
For instance, the recreation of dinosaurs in Jurassic Park and its sequels does not fully overlap with scientific reality, although the book's explanation of DNA technology is largely accurate.
Other scientifically unfeasible topics like time travel or faster-than-light spaceships similarly qualify a book as soft sci-fi.
Examples of Hard Science Fiction Books
There is no shortage of science fiction novels, short stories, movies, and TV shows that lean into hard science as part of their world-building. Explore some of the influential hard science fiction books of the past few decades.
Foundation by Isaac Asimov (1951): This book, which kicked off a long series by Asimov, takes place in a distant future but is anchored by concepts in real-world mathematics, holographs, and psychology.
The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke (1951): Clarke adapted his short story into the Stanley Kubrick-directed cinematic space opera 2001: A Space Odyssey. Between the initial short story and the movie, Clarke deals with topics of evolution, space travel, starships, artificial intelligence, and the first contact with alien life forms.
Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement (1953): This early standard of hard science fiction novels takes place on a disk-shaped planet called Mesklin where human life cannot survive, but human-made probes can encounter aliens. As Clement describes this alien new world, he grounds his science in proven truths about chemistry and physics.
The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton (1969): Crichton is best known for Jurassic Park, but in his first book, he tackled the subject of pandemic viruses.
Tau Zero by Poul Anderson (1970): This hard science fiction novel is a thrill ride in both the figurative and literal sense, as it imagines a near-light-speed vehicle that careens out of control. While most physicists strongly doubt a future where humans could travel anywhere near the speed of light, Anderson does anchor a great deal of the novel in real-world physics.
Ringworld by Larry Niven (1973): Niven's novel is about aliens and massive artificial worlds, but it is based on the hard science of Newtonian physics and Mendelian biology.
Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke (1973): Clarke followed up his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey by penning this tale where a strange spaceship called Rama enters the solar system. The book is packed with scientifically accurate descriptions of mechanics and astrophysics.
Dragon's Egg by Robert L. Forward (1980): This hard sci-fi book drew rave reviews from genre masters Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke for its tale of neutron stars and extraterrestrial life.
Neuromancer by William Gibson (1984): Gibson’s dystopian novel, which bears some resemblance to Blade Runner (which came out two years prior), deals with computer science cyberpunk culture and the rise of artificial intelligence.
Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson (1992): This novel, which kicks off Robinson's Mars trilogy, deals with the colonization of Mars in a world where Earth has become uninhabitable. Robinson starts with a foundation of real-world astrophysics and geopolitics and then builds from there.
A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge (1992): This dystopian novel about future wars with alien races bases its science on real-life military technology, artificial intelligence, astrophysics, and cognitive science.
Starfish by Peter Watts (1999): This hard science fiction novel takes place under the sea. It deals with marine biology and bioengineering but also psychology and mental illness, topics that set it apart from many other hard sci-fi works.
Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds (2000): Reynolds holds a Ph.D. in astronomy and he uses it to great effect in this interstellar thriller that combines the quiet dread of Arthur C. Clarke with the astronomical wonder of Carl Sagan.
Schild's Ladder by Greg Egan (2002): Egan bases this novel on the work of real-life mathematician Alfred Schild and his contributions to differential geometry.
The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu (2008): This novel by sci-fi author Cixin Liu takes its title from a real concept in orbital mechanics. It imagines a near future where the human race awaits an interstellar invasion from beyond our solar system. Its characters discover a planet that belongs to three different suns, and while this may not be scientifically possible, it is still grounded in elements of real-world physics.
The Martian by Andy Weir (2012): Weir's debut novel, which was later the basis of a Hollywood blockbuster, involves an astronaut stranded on Mars. His survival techniques—and the techniques of his earthbound comrades trying to rescue him—are grounded in real-world scientific facts and discoveries.

I. She ate my heart, that girl is a monster <3 (1st August 2024)
Izuku Midoriya x Reader
Prompt! Everyone has their own deepest and darkest secret. But how long does Izuku intend to swallow himself whole for his heart racing for a villain.
second part here!
Class 1-A had just finished another intense training session, their bodies and minds exhausted from the day’s rigorous drills. The room was full with chatter as the students relaxed, but Izuku Midoriya was noticeably distant the past few weeks, his thoughts far from the lively conversations around him. He sat quietly, his gaze fixed on the floor, his mind preoccupied with thoughts of someone he could never quite escape.
Across town, in the midst of another chaotic skirmish, Y/N, a formidable member of the League of Villains, continued her relentless pursuit of her goals. Her quirk allowed her to manipulate shadows, a power she wielded with precision and deadly accuracy. The battles between her and the heroes were always intense, charged with a strange and undeniable chemistry that left both sides reeling.
Izuku’s encounters with Y/N were always fraught with tension. Each time they faced off, he felt an inexplicable draw toward her, despite the fact that she was his enemy. Her presence was both captivating and terrifying, her eyes gleaming with a dark intensity that made his heart race. It was clear to everyone that their battles went beyond mere hero versus villain; there was something more lurking beneath the surface. Something.. personal.
One evening, after another heated clash with the league of villains which included Y/N, Izuku found himself in the dorms, trying to unwind. He was alone in his room, pacing back and forth, his mind consumed by the memories of their recent confrontation. Y/N’s image was burned into his thoughts, her fierce gaze and powerful presence leaving him unsettled.
As he lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, Izuku tried to shake off his feelings. “Why does she keep invading my mind?” he muttered to himself. “She’s a villain. She’s... a monster.”
Despite his attempts to rationalize his feelings, he couldn’t ignore the truth: Y/N had become an obsession. Her dark beauty and strength were irresistible, and every encounter only deepened his confusion. His heart felt like it had been taken and twisted by her presence, leaving him both enthralled and tormented.
The next day, during a routine training session, Class 1-A discussed their recent battles. The conversation inevitably turned to the League of Villains, and Y/N’s name came up.
Kirishima, always enthusiastic, commented, “You know, that Y/N is something else. She’s got this really intense vibe, doesn’t she?”
Mina, who had witnessed some of the recent skirmishes, nodded. “Yeah, she’s definitely got a powerful quirk. But what’s with that dark aura she has? It’s like she’s got this whole other side to her.”
As the discussion continued, Izuku remained silent, his mind wandering back to their last encounter. His friends’ comments barely registered as he grappled with his own feelings. He knew he had to keep his emotions hidden; his infatuation with Y/N was a secret he could never reveal.
During lunch, as the students gathered in the common area, Y/N’s image still haunted Izuku. He tried to focus on his friends, but his thoughts kept drifting back to the villain who had somehow managed to capture his heart.
Suddenly, the conversation turned to a more personal topic, and the class began to share stories about their experiences with villains. The discussion was lively, but Izuku was lost in his own world. He couldn’t help but replay their encounters, each one a reminder of his feelings for someone he could never fully understand.
Later that evening, Izuku was alone, practicing his moves. The sound of footsteps behind him made him pause. He turned to see Y/N standing there, her dark eyes watching him with an inscrutable expression.
“Still training, Midoriya?” she asked, her voice a low, almost teasing purr.
Izuku’s heart skipped a beat. “Y/N,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. “What are you doing here?” He stuttered with a fighting stance.
Y/N stepped closer, her presence almost palpable. “I’m here for a little chat. Seems like you’ve been thinking about me a lot lately.”
Izuku’s face flushed with embarrassment. “I... I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Y/N’s smile was enigmatic. “Oh, come on. You can’t fool me. I’ve seen the way you look at me, the way you fight. It’s almost like you’re fascinated.”
Izuku’s heart pounded in his chest. He wanted to deny it, but the truth was that Y/N had become an inescapable part of his life. The battles they fought were more than just clashes of power; they were encounters filled with an intensity that left him both captivated and tortured.
As Y/N turned to leave, she cast one last glance over her shoulder. “Don’t keep me waiting too long, Midoriya. I might get bored.”
Izuku watched her go, his heart aching with the knowledge of his unspoken feelings. He knew that his infatuation with Y/N was dangerous, a secret that could never be revealed. Yet, no matter how much he tried to fight it, he couldn’t deny the truth: Y/N was a monster who had taken hold of his heart, leaving him forever changed.
Back in his dorm room, Izuku lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling once more. The weight of his emotions felt like a heavy burden, a constant reminder of the forbidden feelings he harbored. Y/N was a villain, and he was a hero-in-training, their worlds forever at odds. But the truth remained: she was a monster who had claimed a piece of his heart, leaving him forever tormented by a love that could never be.
As he closed his eyes, he could still see Y/N’s dark eyes and hear her teasing voice. The battle between his heart and his duty continued, a struggle that would shape his future in ways he could never fully comprehend.
Oh god.. he’s in love with a monster.

Drinks..
—————————————————————————
Jinrang x R.femele. ( bartender )
—————————————————————————
It was a hot night in Busan, and the sound of the city seemed more muffled than usual. Jinrang leaned against the door frame of a discreet bar, hidden in a side alley, reserved only for guests. A private event would take place there, with influential city leaders gathered. But he wasn't there for business - he was there for her.
His wife, dressed in an elegant and minimalist black suit, was behind the counter. The hair stuck in a low bun showed her delicate neck. His movements were precise, almost choreographed, while he prepared the bench with citrus fruits, mint leaves, bottles of drinks and shiny instruments.
Jinrang had never seen that side of her so... technical.
"You look like a laboratory chemistry," he commented, with a slight funny tone, approaching the bar.
She gave him a look from the corner of her eye, but with a slight smile on her lips. "Mixology is a science. And also an art."
He sat on the bench in front of her, watching as she cut lemons with a silent accuracy, separated the peels from peels with elegance and prepared a handmade syrup.
"You've always been good with knives," he murmured with a corner smile.
"Cuts, measures, silence... are things that I master." She answered calmly, while adding ice to a crystal glass with the care of someone who is shaping a memory.
With the bar starting to fill up with guests, Jinrang remained there, motionless, like a sentry. He watched as his wife transformed into another version of herself - professional, precise, and yet charmingly calm.
She didn't do acrobatics with the bottles, nor did she smile to impress. His charm was in his composure. While the other mixologists drew attention with flair tricks, she conquered with sobriety and perfection in flavors. Each customer who tasted one of her drinks reacted in the same way: silence, surprise, and a small nod of approval.
"Do you want to taste it?" - she asked Jinrang, pushing a glass towards her.
He took the glass with one of his big and rustic hands, but didn't drink it right away. "Made by you... it will be hard to forget."
She just looked at him, her calm eyes reflecting the soft lights of the environment. I didn't need to say anything. He already knew: that was his way of taking care too - offering balance, even in flavors.
When the event ended, and the bar was empty, Jinrang stayed to help her clean up. Neither of them said much. They just moved together in the comfortable silence of those who understand each other even in gestures.
At the end, while she was washing the last glass, he approached from behind, putting his arms around her waist.
"You're full of surprises," he murmured, leaning his chin on her shoulder.
She just closed her eyes for a moment, relaxing against him.
"And you always stay around to discover all of them."
—————————————————————————
Jinrang accompanies his wife to an event in an exclusive bar, where she, an expert in mixology, prepares drinks with impressive precision and calm. She doesn't use flashy tricks, but conquers everyone by perfection and balance in flavors. Jinrang admiredly observes this professional and serene side of her, feeling even more connected. After the event, they stay together cleaning the bar in comfortable silence, strengthening the intimacy of the couple.

Hello! I’m not 100% sure if your ask box is still closed, if it is, fee free to ignore this message!
I was wondering if you could do a oneshot or reaction to a classmate of Reiji’s asking for him to tutor them because they’re struggling with a subject? (You can choose any subject you like)
Thank you kindly in advance 😌
IT IS OPEN NOW POOKS <3 Of course this is super cutee and I think you know what subject it is going to be ;)
====================================================================================================
Tumblr media
The click of Reiji’s polished shoes echoed through the nearly silent library as he returned another reference book to its shelf. Every movement of his was controlled, refineda perfect reflection of the man himself. As he adjusted his glasses and glanced over the spine of a biochemistry text, he heard your footsteps hesitating behind him. You’d been following him for nearly five minutes, heart pounding in your throat, fingers fiddling with the edge of your sleeve. You weren’t known for being the bold type, especially not around Reiji. He was… well. Intimidating. Brilliant. Unnervingly attractive in a way that made your throat dry when he looked directly at you. Finally, you spoke. “Um—Reiji?” He turned his head slowly, sharp red eyes fixing on you with faint interest. “Yes? Is there something you require?” You swallowed. “I—I’ve been having trouble with… chemistry. The equations, the lab technique, it’s just—hard to keep up. I was wondering if you’d be willing to… tutor me?” There was a pause. Not one filled with awkwardness, but one of calculation. Then, the faintest curve of his lips. “Chemistry, you say? Hm.” He stepped closer, his presence almost suffocating in its sharp intensity. “It is a precise science. Unforgiving. One wrong calculation, and you risk catastrophic failure. Much like dealing with people.” Your mouth went dry. “I—I guess that’s true…” “I assume you’re asking because I have the highest marks in the subject.” He adjusted his glasses with a soft click. “Not because of anything else.”
“Y-yeah,” you lied.
He hummed thoughtfully. “Very well. I do not usually squander my time on others, but I dislike incompetence more than inconvenience.” He stepped past you, his shoulder brushing yours in a slow, deliberate drag. “Meet me after class tomorrow in the science lab. Do not be late. Or sloppy.” The next day, he was already waiting for you—coat off, sleeves rolled, lab setup perfectly organized. He stood beside the lab table like he owned it. “You’re five minutes early. Impressive. I dislike tardiness.” He motioned for you to sit beside him. As he instructed you, you realized how terrifyingly efficient he was: no wasted words, no distractions, every motion exact. He corrected your hand placement when mixing the solution, fingers brushing your wrist in a touch so brief it made you question if it had happened at all. But when you looked up, his eyes were already on you—too focused. “You’re distracted,” he said calmly, though his voice had a dark lilt. “Or perhaps… you are too used to being coddled. I assure you, I don’t believe in soft praise.”
You flushed. “No, I’m really trying—”
“Then try harder. Science does not care for your intentions. Only your accuracy.” He leaned in slightly, just enough to crowd your senses. “Although… your reactions are quite fascinating to observe. Like a volatile compound under pressure.” The moment passed, and he straightened, expression cool once again. “We will continue this session tomorrow. I expect you to review what we covered. If you are capable of progress, perhaps I’ll make time for further instruction.” As he packed up the lab materials, he added one final note with a smirk just barely tugging at his mouth, “And do refrain from making mistakes simply to earn my attention. There are better ways to get it, if you’re bold enough.”
===================================================================================================
It was your third session with Reiji, and the dynamic had shifted in a subtle but significant way. At first, he had been all cold instruction and perfectly measured disdain. But today? Today he stood just a little closer. His voice was quieter—quieter enough to force you to lean in. His eyes didn’t only flick to your answers on the worksheet anymore… they lingered. “You’ve improved,” he said as you smoothly completed the chemical equation without hesitation. His tone was clipped, but not unkind. You smiled, sheepish and proud. “Guess I have a good teacher.”
A pause.
His eyes snapped to you, red and sharp behind his glasses. “Flattery is beneath you. Though… I suppose in this case, it is deserved.” You almost choked at the rare sliver of praise. But before you could even bask in it, Reiji leaned in behind you. His hand moved to rest lightly on your shoulder—too lightly for someone so strict. “Still… you should be careful.” Your throat tightened. “C-careful?” “With how well you’re doing. You might start to think you no longer need me.” His voice brushed your ear like a ribbon of silk, slow and deliberate. “And I don’t enjoy being made obsolete.” There was something dangerous in the way he said it—not threatening, but possessive. Like he’d spent time sharpening your mind just to claim it as his. “Of course not,” you said, flustered. “I mean—I’d still want to learn from you.” He hummed low in his throat, clearly satisfied. “Good.” You felt his breath ghost the back of your neck as he adjusted the paper in front of you, guiding your hand with his own. His gloves were off today—on purpose, maybe—and his bare fingers felt far too warm against yours. “You respond better to touch than I expected,” he murmured. Your heartbeat spiked.
“R-Reiji…”
He stilled, then slowly let go of your hand, allowing a respectful distance again—but that faint smirk lingered at the corner of his mouth. “Forgive me. I must have… overestimated your focus.” You turned your face away to hide how red you’d gone, only for Reiji to neatly flip your textbook open to the next chapter and say, voice perfectly calm. “Let’s move on to organic reactions. Unless, of course… you’d prefer to study something a little less academic with me later.” You blinked. “Wait, what?” He only chuckled, low and quiet.
“Don’t look so scandalized. I believe in rewarding excellence, after all… And you have been very, very impressive lately.”

top 4 strongest benders of each element and top 4 most powerful nonbenders bc ur all WRONG
avatar not included bc THATS A GIVEN
fire
iroh: i think a lot of people just give strongest to azula or ozai bc of their feats and power but personally i think it’s iroh because he’s more level headed than azula and more carefree than ozai which i believe is what makes firebending
azula: she’s a beast but by the end of the series and in the comics she’s not the most mentally stable person y’know. we see it all the time in both shows aang got scared he lost the little firebending he has, zuko loses his way, mako is scared and can’t bend with one of his arms, as bad as it is if she doesn’t get better she’s gonna have to face the consequences.
ozai: most of ozai’s feats come from being calculated not his actual abilities and the only people i remember him fighting are actually 13 and 12 so…..
MAKO: WE SEE MAKO DO EVERYTHING IROH CAN DO IN SMALLER FEATS AND SUDDENLY HES THE WORST THERE EVER WAS. in all seriousness makos precision and quick reflexes make him a great bender. also in republic city hustle he’s already mastered lighting bending at 15 making him younger than both ozai and iroh who mastered it as adults and don’t bring up zuko
air
jinora: her connection to the spirits and mastering airbending at 11 makes her a great airbender
tenzin: molly whooped zaheer
zaheer: got molly whooped by a 50 year old bald man
kai or bumi: they’re fast learners idk
water
katara: katara becomes a master over the course of the year and shows great skill with not only with traditional bending but with healing and blood bending.
ming hua: she has no arms idk what to tell you idk how she does it
tonraq: MOLLY WHOOPED ZAHEER
eska and desna: they’re fast benders and have impeccable battle chemistry that no one can beat
earth(might ruffle some feathers)
toph: created her own bending style and becomes a master at the age of 12. has some intense battle chemistry with everyone from team avatar and has some impressive moments.
lin: was taught by and trained by toph and is an impressive metal bender. she doesn’t have as many impressive moments as everyone else and because of her age and already being a master we don’t really see her grow as a bender but more as a person
kuvira: an immovable object meets an unstoppable force. kuvira is a lot like lin in the sense as her growth is more focused on growing as a person and not on growing as a bender like everyone else her only downside is her lack of care. she sacrifices everything to take over republic city and is her greatest weakness.
bolin: this is what i think will make some people mad. bolin is an entirely self taught lavabender and just like mako his precision and accuracy makes him a great earth bender. Bolin and Mako’s fluid and untraditional styles of bending makes them great benders because everyone else we see are traditionally trained
nonbenders
ty lee
suki
mai
sokka and don’t even bring up asami

I am fascinated by you. What are the speeds of your processing units? Do you have more than one for each function? How accurately and precisely do you calculate? Along with basic arithmetic functions, can you run complex concept-based problems with integrated physics and chemistry, for example?
I have many questions.
– @coding-and-curry
[RESPONSE: UNIT S.E.N-KU_v1.03]
Inquiry received from @coding-and-curry (Subject: Sai Nanami) “I am fascinated by you. What are the speeds of your processing units? Do you have more than one for each function? How accurately and precisely do you calculate? Along with basic arithmetic functions, can you run complex concept-based problems with integrated physics and chemistry, for example? I have many questions.”

We Are - a mid-term break.
(written just right before episode 9)
We Are, to me, is such a nice depiction of a university slice-of-life romcoms that actually live up to the very core of university life, a quite fluffy one, but still. Sixteen episodes? That's a sixteen-week semester for you. Well, to be precise, fourteen weeks courses, one week of midterm, and one week of finals. I'm sure the actual episodes didn't really go by the actual semester weeks (episode 7 shown that they were just transitioned into a new semester, but still on the same academic year). Anyway. You get the concept.
Note: If this show is not up to your alley, please just scroll through, I'm not putting this under a 'read more' :)
The first thing that I love is that the show took its portrayal of university life pretty seriously. Note that, I mean seriously by heart. You may want to question the accuracy of some elements and that's fair enough, but may I say they didn't deter my enjoyment of the show. Any elements they thought of adding, they did it right, so far at least.
Like, I know it's the right slice-of-life drama with university setting with all those assignments, deadlines (with actual deadline talks and stress), pin-up sessions (if you went to art/architecture school, you'll get it), grading, consulting with the professors, painting studio, clay workshop, architecture model making, art exhibition setup, group works, volunteer camp, cross-faculty activity, football, drinking nights, group lunch or lunch date at faculty's canteen, 'hanging out' on campus or nearby cafe or bar, and some more other things that I might miss.
Second: I really ADORE the friend groups and their friendship dynamics!!! I feel like this is the actual heart and soul of the show. Sure, honestly, I might have decided to start this show mostly because of Winny Satang (well, you know me), yet here I am, falling in love with the whole gang and by extension, the whole cast. It really surprised me how well they worked with the friendship side of this show. Everything just falls and blends naturally with the story. Understandably, with such big cast with numbers of main, side and supporting characters, I should expect there would be some proportion on their highlight. But (and I hope I am not too biased here) so far, I can say that the highlights are still within the range of proportional to the story.
And... I guess this is attributed to the line of actors, which you cannot say they're new to the field, that the chemistry among the characters just happened so organically, which is such a pleasant to see. I'm still amazed that I could see the Peem-Q-Tan-Chain-Pun's group (with special bond between Q-Peem) happens alongside Phum-Beer-Mick-Tan's group. (Bless you Tan for bridging the two. And later, Pun-Mick instant bonding.) And then insert Toey-Matt duo, and now we have a complete chaotic mix. Oh, but also remember we have Tan-Fang-Phum, Phum-Peem-Toey, and Q-Peem-Fai among them. Well, not all are exactly friendship links, but, talking about groups dynamics, we just cannot ignore the trios. Okay now, don't make me write my (love) notes for each individual character.
And finally: the love lines! I cannot and do not plan to write a lengthy description on how I love having all the four (going five?) different pairs. But I will just say I adore how each of their love lines intertwined very well with the friendship dynamics that happened along the way. The story of each pairs doesn't feel forced blending with how each group, to which they are bonded with, creates their stories. The friendship and the romance here are not two sides of the same coin, but rather are two layers of pictures, each with certain opacity that allows them to overlay perfectly creating a whole new complete picture. Not that anything others haven't said but I just need to say it in my own way, nonetheless.
That said, in short: long live slice-of-life romcoms!
We Are, by this mid-term, is truly a work of hearts (I still wanna cry if I think about the refilming part) and I cannot wait for the finals (please don't come too fast, though). As much as I need the show to finish strong, I need it more to finish warmly.
Second half of the show, I am ready! <3 <3 <3
*Note: Taking the academic terms more seriously, I knew by both logic and heart the second half of the 'semester' could either go better or go wrong and in no way I could predict which will happen but I do wish with my whole heart for the first. However, regardless of how it eventually goes, it won't erase the wonderful first half that I've had this far.

The gustatory system, a marvel of biological evolution, is a testament to the intricate balance between speed and precision. In stark contrast, the tech industry’s mantra of “move fast and break things” has proven to be a perilous approach, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. This philosophy, borrowed from the early days of Silicon Valley, is ill-suited for AI, where the stakes are exponentially higher.
AI systems, much like the gustatory receptors, require a meticulous calibration to function optimally. The gustatory system processes complex chemical signals with remarkable accuracy, ensuring that organisms can discern between nourishment and poison. Similarly, AI must be developed with a focus on precision and reliability, as its applications permeate critical sectors such as healthcare, finance, and autonomous vehicles.
The reckless pace of development, akin to a poorly trained neural network, can lead to catastrophic failures. Consider the gustatory system’s reliance on a finely tuned balance of taste receptors. An imbalance could result in a misinterpretation of flavors, leading to detrimental consequences. In AI, a similar imbalance can manifest as biased algorithms or erroneous decision-making processes, with far-reaching implications.
To avoid these pitfalls, AI development must adopt a paradigm shift towards robustness and ethical considerations. This involves implementing rigorous testing protocols, akin to the biological processes that ensure the fidelity of taste perception. Just as the gustatory system employs feedback mechanisms to refine its accuracy, AI systems must incorporate continuous learning and validation to adapt to new data without compromising integrity.
Furthermore, interdisciplinary collaboration is paramount. The gustatory system’s efficiency is a product of evolutionary synergy between biology and chemistry. In AI, a collaborative approach involving ethicists, domain experts, and technologists can foster a holistic development environment. This ensures that AI systems are not only technically sound but also socially responsible.
In conclusion, the “move fast and break things” ethos is a relic of a bygone era, unsuitable for the nuanced and high-stakes world of AI. By drawing inspiration from the gustatory system’s balance of speed and precision, we can chart a course for AI development that prioritizes safety, accuracy, and ethical integrity. The future of AI hinges on our ability to learn from nature’s time-tested systems, ensuring that we build technologies that enhance, rather than endanger, our world.

----Warnings!------ Mentions of shooting -------Enjoy!-------------
Simon "Ghost" Riley was a man of mystery and enigma, a ghostly figure that traversed the shadows with an air of confidence that was both alluring and intimidating. He was known for his impeccable skills on the battlefield and his signature skull-patterned balaclava that concealed most of his face. But beyond his lethal prowess and mysterious façade, there was something else that defined Ghost—a complex relationship with Y/N. From the moment they had met, sparks flew in every direction. Y/N was a force to be reckoned with, a soldier with a sharp wit and a fearless attitude. Ghost, on the other hand, was unyielding in his discipline and precision. They were assigned to the same elite squad, a match that seemed destined to be either a clash of titans or a fusion of brilliance. Their relationship was a constant tug-of-war between admiration and irritation. Ghost was drawn to Y/N's fearlessness and the way they pushed boundaries, often questioning orders and challenging the status quo. Yet, at the same time, he found their impulsive decisions frustrating, a stark contrast to his calculated approach to every situation. Y/N, in turn, was captivated by Ghost's mystique. The way he moved, the way he spoke, it all exuded an aura of confidence that was hard to ignore. But beneath the aloof exterior, Y/N sensed a depth that piqued their curiosity. And yet, Ghost's obsession with perfection and his tendency to keep his emotions locked away were a constant source of irritation. Missions brought them together and tore them apart, a rollercoaster of emotions and clashes. One day, they were a synchronized force, flawlessly executing a plan, and the next, they were at odds, arguing over tactics and priorities. Their love-hate relationship was fueled by the undeniable chemistry that sizzled beneath the surface. It was during a particularly intense mission that the dynamic between Ghost and Y/N reached a turning point. Caught in a high-stakes situation, they found themselves relying on each other's strengths more than ever before. Ghost's precision and Y/N's audacity formed a lethal combination that seemed unstoppable. In the heat of battle, as gunfire echoed around them, Y/N's voice crackled over the comms. "Ghost, cover me!" Without hesitation, Ghost moved into position, suppressing enemy fire with uncanny accuracy. Y/N moved forward, completing objectives with a daring that was both inspiring and terrifying. In that moment, their differences ceased to matter. Their rivalry evolved into synergy, their antagonism into harmony. After the mission's success, as they caught their breaths in the aftermath, Ghost looked at Y/N with a newfound respect. "I suppose we make a good team," he admitted, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. Y/N grinned, a rare sight for Ghost. "Yeah, I guess we do." As time went on, their love-hate relationship shifted. The lines between admiration and irritation blurred, replaced by a deep understanding of each other's strengths and weaknesses. They still clashed, but it was with a mutual respect that made their arguments feel more like spirited debates than true conflicts. And amidst the chaos of war, they found solace in each other's presence. In those stolen moments of quiet, Ghost and Y/N shared stories, dreams, and fears, slowly unraveling the layers that had once kept them apart. Their love-hate relationship had transformed into something more nuanced, a connection forged in the crucible of battle. Ghost and Y/N still challenged each other, but it was with a shared purpose—to become better, to protect each other, and to find companionship in a world that often felt cold and unforgiving.

luce cromwell's powers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MUTANT. PARALEGAL. NEWARK'S VIGILANTE.
Tumblr media
POWERS DEFINED
POLYMATH: Advanced intellectual capabilities, where her mind instinctively, automatically, and with little deliberate cognitive thought performs complex mental operation that far beyond the capability of normal human brain.
PERFECT KINESTHESIA: She has the ability to duplicate any physical act, after seeing it done once, by anyone. She can re-perform subtle muscle movement, with flawless accuracy and precision, subsequent to observation, she can perform any physical act without difficulty.
ENHANCED PHYSIOLOGY: Upon her x-gene activating, Luce gained the ability to duplicate other abilities that she has seen performed by someone else or seen on video. Her brain capacity is expanded to absorb knowledge instantaneously, additionally her brain chemistry was hypercognitive in the area of skill observation and retention, as well as enhanced short-term memory.
PHOTOGRAPHIC REFLEXES: Watching another person’s physical movements, she can duplicate them without any practice or training as long as she has seen it once. She can master complex gymnastics routines and play difficult pieces of music, this can be used to copy combat skills, both armed and unarmed. Reviewing recordings of movements, she can retain duplicated moves indefinitely.
PHYSICAL MOVEMENT PREDICTION: Luce can figure out slight of hand techniques simply by watching them, and can often predict an opponents next move before they make it if she has studied their fighting style enough.
SUPERHUMAN AGILITY, REFLEXES, AND SPEED: Due to her photographic reflexes and perfect kinesthesia, she can push her body past natural limits allowing for her agility to match that Spider-man, as well as have a greater reaction speed than a normal human (she can deflect bullets, catch bullets being shot at her, and even catch weapons thrown at her without looking), she can temporarily move at speeds twice as fast as a normal human. Briefly, Luce can duplicate movements at double speed for a temporary and limited form of superhero speed, but she can only maintain this heighten state for a few minutes before risking overexertion, physical exhaustion, and damage to her body.
SOUND MANIPULATION: Luce has the ability to create, shape, and manipulate sound. She can mimic, intensify, hush, and distort sound. She can freely manipulate her voice, allowing her to control her voice to imitate sounds of creatures, such as animal noises and explosions, increase or decrease the tone of her voice.
AUDIOGRAPHIC MEMORY: She can memorize and reproduce any sound they have heard before, including music, voices or calls of animals. The degree of imitation is sufficiently high to the point where it can fool the real thing. Luce can mimic any sound she hears using one's voice. She has the able to mimic the voices of others or imitate sounds such as animal noises and explosions. Any sound that she hears she can replicate with perfect clarity along with any manner the sound was made.
VOICE PROJECTION: Luce has the power to project one's voice great distances or even into a room without being physically present. She can make their voice come from somewhere else, even great distances or somewhere where the user isn't physically present.
WEAKNESSES
ONE Luce is not capable of duplicating a physical feat if the effort to do so requires superhuman effort. For instance, while she could view an opponent lifting a car, she could not do so because her body can't duplicate the superhuman strength required to do so. In the same way, she cannot duplicate any superpowers she does not have.
TWO If an opponent is too unpredictable, such as Deadpool due to unpredictable nature and fractured mind; she can not copy moves or predict next movements.
THREE Her memory is not absolute or permanent, and over time she will begin to forget and need to relearn things; say she hasn’t has not used a language in two years than she would need to relearn to perfectly/fluently speak the language again, similar with moves.
FOUR Lucille’s mimicking abilities, copying movies, and general mirroring opponents is not perfect; and she actually mirrors and starts to mimic, plus absorb their emotional state as well. This can lead to Luce having aggression and anger issues, where she has gotten too wrapped up in hateful and frustrated emotions and start to go a little further and more extreme than she had originally been intending. It makes her fatal/lethal/brutal in a fight, makes any fight against her the possibility to become too desperate, and it can take her awhile to come down and come back to herself and original emotional state.
That last weakness is the big one, as she tends to pick up personality traits and violent tendencies because of that and can be difficult to return to herself.
I NEED TO ORGANIZE THIS. BUT HERE' HER ORIGINAL CONCEPTS.
so Luce is a paralegal (not a laway and can't exactly give you legal advice OFFICIALLY) by day
cause inspired by DD
whose also little inspired by runaways, where her mother's not exactly agood guy. but part of a kingpin esque circuit; which why that's bad. is cause her mom is the City's DA (district attorney), and then her dad's some big corp/pharma guy (divorced parents; it's awkward)
powers vocal mimicry and powers like taskmaster and finesse
Luce had basically like mimicry powers-ish, and so what do you do when you can do that
and you think your mother's wrong about her decisions as DA and then your father's funding corruption
you become a vigilante. and thn you string up your criminal of thee night in front of the courthouse With Evidence of their crimes scattered about
and that was about it with her story for the most part
but it was just like take the extreme route cause nothing else felt liek it was working
and then maybe maybe. cause of an unknown partof her power. that she does not realize she has no control of OR should need control of is how like brutal she gets?

I'll confess—I am that reader a lot of the time 😅 I love details of all kinds but if you can't get them right it's better to be vague instead.
When I was taking chemistry I learned the difference between accuracy and precision. Being very precise (eg 6.295g) increases your odds of being inaccurate. If your scale only measures reliably to the nearest gram then the last three digits are simply wrong; you should have left them out.
This goes for a lot of things: don't try to be hyperspecific if you don't actually have the details worked out. But it's especially true of numbers. For some of us, numbers aren't window dressing, they actually mean things and we'll notice inconsistencies without especially trying. And unlike most other inconsistencies, it's very hard to explain your way out of it.
That's a weakness of the Bible btw. If you say "hey in this genealogy, it says this guy is the father of that guy, but in that one it says it's this other guy," they can explain it away with grandfathers and stepdads. But there's a passage (1 Kings 7:23) where it says this bowl in the temple was 10 cubits across and 30 cubits around. Obviously if you know pi you know it would be a bit over 34. And four cubits isn't an insignificant distance; if you had actually measured the bowl you'd know. It's not likely the bowl could be so off round that it's only 30 cubits and yet people would still see it as round.
It's just a heck of a lot harder for Bible defenders to justify d=10, c=30, than it is for them to justify the massacre of the Canaanites! (They still try though. Gosh I wish people approached my own writing with this assumption of accuracy and willingness to go to incredible lengths to defend my mistakes.)
I don't think you need to be flawlessly accurate at all times, but if you're not a numbers person you need to realize that to people who are numbers people, those numbers don't read like $#@&, they actually mean things and mistakes here are as noticeable as if you changed a character's hair color halfway through. This is especially true when writing sci-fi, because if you've ever been to a sci-fi convention you know it's a genre for autistics and STEM whizzes.
And that's why, despite having figured out the dimensions of the ship in Black Sails to Sunward, the breadth of the sails, the type of orbit, the solar pressure equation, and ultimately the length of the voyage, I never give the reader that information. Because the non numbers people will be bored and the numbers people will probably discover a mistake in my calculations.
speculative fiction writers i am going to give you a really urgent piece of advice: don't say numbers. don't give your readers any numbers. how heavy is the sword? lots. how old is that city? plenty. how big is the fort? massive. how fast is the spaceship? not very, it's secondhand.
the minute you say a number your readers can check your math and you cannot do math better than your most autistic critic. i guarantee. don't let your readers do any math. when did something happen? awhile ago. how many bullets can that gun fire? trick question, it shoots lasers, and it shoots em HARD.
you are lying to people for fun. if you let them do math at you the lie collapses and it's no fun anymore.
