Yesterday I made my Guthrie Debut as Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors! The day was such a blur and such a Joy!! So many people to thank!! Thank you to the wonderful cast that lifted me up and pushed/pulled me in the right direction! Thank you to the Crew and Staff at the Guthrie for making my backstage experience so easy and smooth! Currently @ActorsEquity is in negotiations for the newest contract between its members and the Broadway League. These happen every fours years or so for all Equity contracts as producers and AEA compromise and accommodate on their way toward a final agreement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Of all the places where Equity has the most power and pull to enact change and make progress for actors, it’s on Broadway and in NYC. So this campaign of “It’s About Time Broadway” is an effort to support Equity in these negotiations as they fight for better working conditions. However, I would go one step further and also say it’s about time Equity, especially when it comes to parity in Broadway pay and strengthening the national tours that come from Broadway. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Right now the Broadway minimum is just over $2000, but there are big exceptions for multi-million dollar nonprofits like Lincoln Center and Roundabout, among others. Even though they produce huge productions and are eligible for Tony Awards every year, Equity has allowed these companies to pay actors and stage managers hundreds of dollars less each week than their Broadway counterparts in other theaters. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then we get to tours, which is under a different agreement from the Broadway Production contract, yet actors are often performing the exact same lines, notes, and staging as the Broadway production. Base tickets prices often tend to be about the same as NYC as well, especially in bigger cities like LA and Chicago. Still, Equity has cheapened touring contracts to be half or even a third of the Broadway salaries. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This happened for me in the Evita Notional Tour from 2013-14, where my pay was not even $800 while the Broadway performers were making a minimum of around $1900. Again, my chorus track matched that of the Broadway version, note for note and step for step, but my pay was sorely lacking — a trend that has only continued as fewer and fewer tours go out under a Production contract.
