I want a werewolf story but the person wears glasses and still needs them when transformed but their face changes shape so drastically there's literally nothing they can do short of buying another pair of glasses, taking the lenses out, and trying to jury-rig a set of goggles that will A)fit them correctly in their transformed state B)not fall off C)actually let them see D)not get destroyed when they transform back
And that's not even getting into the fact that their normal glasses probably wouldn't even work because their eyes have changed structure and would probably need whole new lenses.
if they can't figure out how to do this or just straight up don't have the money to buy an extra pair of glasses they're just. fucking incapable of doing jack shit while transformed because they can't see anything clearly even if it's pressed against the end of their new muzzle.
This would get even worse if being transformed affects what colors they can see in any way, because now not only can't they see things, they can't even rely on memory to recognize things until they get used to the new gradient of grey to yellow to blue.
No magic exists that fixes this. No it does not magically get fixed after they transform enough times or any other magical related stuff.
They either have to get werewolf-accessible glasses or goggles, or not be able to see. Those are the only two options. And no, sense of smell and hearing do not somehow magically compensate for their inability to see. That's not how this works.
Anyways yes I did combine my visually impaired flags and the all-inclusive werewolf flag.
Here you go:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Three flags.
The first has nine horizontal stripes, combining the visually impaired flag, and a werewolf flag. The stripes are, in order from top to bottom: Light purple, dark purple, black, grey-blue, white, grey-purple, black, light brown, and dark brown.
The second flag is the all-inclusive werewolf flag, with stripes of light purple, dark purple, light brown, and dark brown.
The last flag is the visually impaired flag, with stripes of black, grey-blue, white, grey-purple, and black.
End ID.]

since we're on the topic of inaccessibility for visually impaired people in the mogai people, this is a friendly reminder that if you provide no translations for typing quirks and get angry at disabled people for asking for a translation, you are in fact ableist
and before anyone says that no one gets angry at people for asking a translation, I've had people get angry at me for doing that and claiming that "my typing quirk isn't a different language so it doesn't need translation!" totally forgetting that translation isn't just for other language. And also simultaneously their sentences look like this:
764n5[4710n
[text id: an exaggerated form of a mostly number typing quirk. It reads: translation. With a 7 replacing the T, a 6 replacing the r, a 4 replacing the a, a normal n, a 5 replacing the s, a bracket replacing the L, a 1 replacing the I, and a 0 replacing the O. /end ID]
obviously not all typing quirks need to be translated. It all depends on how readable it is for not only screenreaders, but also people with dyslexia, a language disability, etc.

Blind Tumblr users: don’t get the latest iOS app update!
I just updated my tablet to the newest version of the tumblr app for iOS and it completely broke screen reader access for both VoiceOver and Spoken Content. This has happened in the past already, so I will file a support ticket and copy-paste my text from last time, but this really sucks. I sincerely hope this doesn’t affect all screen reader users, but I’m unsure how they could program this bug in a way it only affects me. If you rely on a screen reader to use the tumblr app, I’d advice to not get the latest update to be on the safe side.
When I say “completely broke access”, what I mean is that no posts on my dash or on individual blogs get read or recognized at all. No plain text, alt text, tags, etc. Note count and buttons still work though.
If you also run into this bug, here’s my advice. If anyone has something more useful, please tell me
File a support ticket and report this bug
Use the browser web version, which still works for me
Interestingly, if you save a post to your drafts and click on “edit” the post text seems to get read correctly. This might be a work-around for some people.
If you have the latest version but your screen reader didn’t break, also please tell me! I would be fascinated to know if this bug is only affecting some people
TL;DR: The latest tumblr app update for iOS made it so screen readers no longer work in the app
Please boost!
Edit: This issue is now fixed as of November 10th 2023. However, since this is a recurring issue, it’s possible that a future update will break it again. See notes for more details.

getting through my backlog of image descriptions. I'm thinking of making a separate sideblog so that you guys can tag me in images to be described or submit images or memes that you want described.

what neurotypical abled people cant seem to get into their heads is aids and medication dont stop people from being neurodivergent and/or disabled. hearing aids dont stop deaf or hard of hearing people from being deaf or hard of hearing, it just makes hearing easier mobility aids such as canes or crutches dont stop people with arthritis, chronic pain, or just general mobility issues from having arthritis, chronic pain, or just general mobility issues, it just makes getting around easier
pain medication doesnt stop people with chronic pain stop being in pain (specifically in the long term), it just makes pain management easier
fidget & stim toys and fidget & stim jewelry dont stop people with anxiety from having anxiety, adhd-ers from having fucked up exectutive function, and autistics not being able to automatically regulate emotions and sensory responses, it just makes dealing with them all easier
various adhd medications doesnt make people not have adhd anymore, it just makes it easier to regulate their executive function.
anxiety medication doesnt get rid of anxiety, it just makes it easier to deal with.
white canes and sight specific service animals dont stop blind people and people with sight impairments from being blind or having sight impairments, it just makes living with them easier.
trauma and emotional support specific service animals dont stop people from having trauma and emotional issues, it just makes dealing with them easier
anti-depressants dont stop people with clinical depression from being depressed, they just make it easier to deal with by stabilizing mood.
immune suppressants dont stop people with any autoimmune condition(s) (such as crohn's, psoriasis or psoratic arthritis, rhumitiod arthritis, myasthenia gravis, fibromyalgia, ect.) being affected in any way affected by their autoimmune condition(s), they just make living with the condition(s) easier.
medication and aids arent magic. they dont make the disabled and/or neurodiverse person not disabled and/or not neurodiverse, they dont entirely cancel out the thing they are used/pescribed for, they just make it easier to exist in a world where whats considered "normal" or "independant" or "a regular human being" doesnt automatically include them.

Question for people who use screen readers or text to speech/audio
When a post on here has lots of emojis, special fonts/text or lots of keysmashes, what is a way to tag those posts so that you guys don't have to sit there listening to nonsense for a minute straight?
Thanks!

Me: hm, I want something to put on the TV as background noise... Huh. Looks like YouTube is recommending something called The Last Unicorn. That's perfect, it's probably some old shitty animation that has aged poorly! I can watch it ironically!
Me, 2 hours later as the credits roll: *crying, cheering, buying the book, composing the songs*
Me, 2 weeks later: So I have compiled all of the quotes from the book that I think could make good tattoos, and also, HOW HAVE I NEVER LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE LAST UNICORN FUCKING SLAPS??? This gay-ass little fairytale fed my soul! Watered my crops! Transed my gender! Can't believe I heard of this story from youtube recommendations, of all places!!
#original#the last unicorn#tlu#peter s beagle#molly gru#schmendrick#schmendrick the magician#two of my favorite characters in anything right there in the center of the story! and I'm glad I saw the film first!#my reading ability has diminished due to trauma disability etc. but it seems like having a visual reference actually really helped!#no wonder i only ever want to read fan fic! turns out reading is not actually Superior to other types of Storytelling. it's just different.#to say otherwise is snobbishness I have been eminently guilty of in my life!#but like it is easier for me to consume tv and movies and that is fine actually. also that's why I'm doing a graphic novel lol#because i wanted to make something i would actually be able to read if i found it at a library. altho the audio book IS gonna be bomb#the audiobook is for visually impaired readers and anyone who wants or needs it! accessible stories for everyone! yeah!!#my gender was already transed but now I've gained an ADDITIONAL gender! which one? I'll never tell 😘#i am so powerful i have so much fuckin gender. my wife has no gender. and she is equally as powerful.#and also she has STUDIED THE BLADE#mostly zoro's blades from One Piece#normally YouTube recommends me shit movies like idiocracy or smth this is like if every day ur cat brought you a piece of rotten food and#then one day it brings you a BEAUTIFULLY ANIMATED TALE FEATURING MY BELOVED TWINK FUCK-UP WIZARD FRIEND AND MY ALL-TIME HOMEGIRL MOLLY GRU#and also it's soft and beautiful and funny and fucking weird!! i wrote melodies to the songs in the books on my ukulele

there's this AuDHD person on instagram who gets a lot of hate from people saying they're faking their autism.
one of the reasons these people brought up is that they wear noise cancelling headphones in their own apartment, when real autistic people would only wear them outside.
i mean, this is already so obviously bullshit because people of every neurotype already wear noise cancelling headphones at home. plus, the commenters don't actually know that this person also isn't wearing them in public. they just think they're "too sensitive" for needing them in their own house.
but as a vision impaired autist, there's an extra layer for me.
i exclusively wear my noise cancelling headphones inside my house. i do not wear them in public, no matter how loud it is.
you wanna know why?
it does not feel safe.
noise cancelling headphones cancel out much of the sound that i need to hear when i go out in public to be able to tell where a car or a person is coming from or how far away they are from me.
the only place i would even remotely feel safe wearing noise cancelling headphones outside is in the small village i grew up. but even there i get so paranoid about cars because i'm traumatised.
i fucking wish i could drown out the noise while still being able to rely on my hearing but i can't.
it's either safety and potential sensory overload or sensory comfort and potential danger.
both decisions are valid but i choose safety.
so that pretty much does leave me only wearing my noise cancelling headphones in my own house. but it helps. i don't even live in the loudest area and i have really quiet neighbours but after a long day in public or at a family gathering or something and not being able to drown out anything, the smallest thing at home could send me into a meltdown.
do these people really need us to go outside with noise cancelling headphones even though it might be unsafe just to prove we're real autists?
bitch, i already get so disoriented when it's windy because all the sounds suddenly sound weird. i'm not doing that, lmao.

it’s kinda funny how almost every character with albinism in media is always portrayed as a villain. as if that isn’t feeding into every stereotype out there.
the only protagonist i’ve found with albinism in media was in a book where the girl turns out to be a witch. which is arguably on the level of bad as the evil albino stereotype.
idk why this bothers me so much. nobody knows about albinism and it’s not like it’s actively discriminated against. but i wish there was more media where more normal people had albinism instead of the PWA turning out to be an evil villain or a witch, they turn out to be a normal person with normal struggles. like give me a story about a character with albinism trying to navigate the world on their own terms, trying to fit in and such WITHOUT using stereotypes.
like yes. i know people being ignorant towards a certain condition isn’t the worst thing in the world. maybe i have no right to complain about it given the other tings that are happening in the world that kinda trump issues like this. but it’s still an issue. the fact that people believe these things is just sad to me tbh.
another thing that bugs me is when people refer to us as ‘albinos’. like not everyone hates that word. some PWAs are okay with it. i just say it because it’s shorter and easier to type out than ‘person with albinism’ but even in media seeing the character being referred to as ‘the albino’ makes my stomach turn. people use the word ‘albino’ to refer to animals; most of the time. the word itself can feel dehumanizing sometimes, in certain contexts. for me it’s better to say person with albinism. it’s putting the person before the disability and it doesn’t feel as degrading.
anyway. my inbox is always open if you have questions for me about how to write a character with albinism. i know nobody is gonna see this or care but i just thought i’d say smth.

hey so like. can you all stop drawing jayfeather with foggy, blurry, grey or white eyes. it feels really fucking weird and stereotypical as a blind person. the majority of blind people have perfectly normal looking eyes; *i* have perfectly normal looking eyes. eyes like that are usually only present in cataracts, or scarring of the eye tissue (so something like longtails eyes would be more understandable to draw as such). jayfeather was blind since birth, there'd be...basically no reason for him to look like that lol.

The Invisible Man And His Soon-To-Be Wife is a really sweet and fun romance in a cool supernatural setting, i would describe it as “wholesome” except every once in a while the author starts playing horny chess in dimensions my brain can barely process

*sensory disability is a category of disability for disabilities that affect senses. traditionally this means sensory loss alone.

becoming blind in one eye was, ironically, a real eye opener into how inaccessible the world is to blind or otherwise visually impaired people. the fact that people just straight up refuse to make media accessible to us is shocking and there’s a weird lack of people talking about it.

i spent so much of my life convincing myself i didn't need audio description, but i'm like 80% sure the reason i can barely remember any of the shows/movies i watched as a kid is because i didn't ever know what the fuck was happening on the screen.
let this be your reminder that accessibility tools are there for a reason. it doesn't matter if you think you can live without them. if they make your life better, then you're using them right.
