it’s kinda funny how almost every character with albinism in media is always portrayed as a villain. as if that isn’t feeding into every stereotype out there.
the only protagonist i’ve found with albinism in media was in a book where the girl turns out to be a witch. which is arguably on the level of bad as the evil albino stereotype.
idk why this bothers me so much. nobody knows about albinism and it’s not like it’s actively discriminated against. but i wish there was more media where more normal people had albinism instead of the PWA turning out to be an evil villain or a witch, they turn out to be a normal person with normal struggles. like give me a story about a character with albinism trying to navigate the world on their own terms, trying to fit in and such WITHOUT using stereotypes.
like yes. i know people being ignorant towards a certain condition isn’t the worst thing in the world. maybe i have no right to complain about it given the other tings that are happening in the world that kinda trump issues like this. but it’s still an issue. the fact that people believe these things is just sad to me tbh.
another thing that bugs me is when people refer to us as ‘albinos’. like not everyone hates that word. some PWAs are okay with it. i just say it because it’s shorter and easier to type out than ‘person with albinism’ but even in media seeing the character being referred to as ‘the albino’ makes my stomach turn. people use the word ‘albino’ to refer to animals; most of the time. the word itself can feel dehumanizing sometimes, in certain contexts. for me it’s better to say person with albinism. it’s putting the person before the disability and it doesn’t feel as degrading.
anyway. my inbox is always open if you have questions for me about how to write a character with albinism. i know nobody is gonna see this or care but i just thought i’d say smth.

it’s really disheartening that the only tumblr blogs i follow that consistently add alt text/image descriptions to photos on posts and reblogs are ones run by visually impaired folks. even most of the leftist blogs & non-VI disability-centered blogs i follow aren’t consistently adding adequate IDs to photos, or even tagging them as undescribed so they can be filtered out.
like, how am i meant to believe your leftism/advocacy includes all disabled people when you run a leftism or disability-focused blog that isn’t even accessible? do you really care about all disabled folks, or just the convenient ones?
obligatory disclaimer that this doesn’t apply to people who literally aren’t capable of doing it. but let’s be honest, that’s not most of you.

I'm not gonna find this tweet because quite frankly I don't feel like going on Twitter
Tumblr media
Aside from the fact that this tweet is classist, not everyone can afford lasik, and lasik has been known to cause issues with your eyes, and it's a temporary solution (your eyes will worsen as you get older anyways).
This tweet really ignores how much the optometrist industry is just in general a really shitty and gaslighting industry for people that have issues beyond just astigmatism and vision issues.
And you're probably thinking "Like that's only a small fraction of people. What about everyone else?" That's kind of the fucking issue. I've had shit vision my ENTIRE life. Literally. Was so fucking blind when I was born that it caused long lasting damage in the nerves in my eyes.
Which means I've been to a lot of optometrists, and if you have any vision problems beyond what's seen as "common" (near sighted or near sighted with an astigmatism) they don't know shit.
And I could go into shit like how none of the optometrists thought to point out that I probably don't have depth perception until I was 23. But that's a niche issue regarding a disability I have due to my vision being so shit when I was so young.
Let's go into an issue that's less common. My prescription was +5.00 or worse my entire life. Plus I have an astigmatism. And a lot of contact companies don't make prescriptions for such severe farsightedness with an astigmatism. (They make prescriptions for -5.00, but not +5.00)
Every time I go to the doctor they're like OH MY GAWDS YOUR CONTACT BRAND IS SO BAD ITS LIKE YOUR EYES ARE SUFFOCATONG I MUST GET YOU A NEW ONE. And every single year I'm like "Trust me. You don't have any options in my prescription." And every time they're like OAH MAH GODS THEY MAKE ME EVERY YEAR LET MEH CHECK.
I'm like "Sure. Whatever."
Guess what? Last I actually checked 7 brands carry my prescription in monthly. A few carry my prescription in contacts that need to be changed every 2 weeks. But none of them carry my prescription in contacts that need to be changed every week or every day. (Which is apparently better or something. Idk.)
Why the fuck would I trust the doctors that gaslight me every year about what contacts I can use to suggest surgery for my eyes?
And that's not even getting into the very weird specific issues I have with my vision that eye doctors just.... shrug off... like they legit just ignore it. Like no matter what prescription they put me in I can always tell my vision doesn't match up to my peers even though I technically test 20/20.
(I know about the whole relax your eyes when you test thing. I literally tell my optometrist "Yo. Like this shit so blurry." And they just tell me that this is the best they can correct me to. Just try to focus my eyes more. This this isn't fucking normal.)
Idk. Ableds (derogatory) need to stop demanding disabled people get their shit fixed and instead ask "What the fuck is wrong with the system that these disabled people don't trust it to fix their shit?"
(Not everyone that wears glasses considers themselves disabled. If you don't consider yourself disabled, good for you. But my vision literally can't be fixed to match my peers, so... not to mention glasses can cost people hundreds of dollars and if your vision is shit enough the weight of the lenses can seriously wear and tear on your frames and your face.)

This is Azaka Yukiko from Love's in sight!
Azaka has amblyopia and uses a cane to walk! She is partially blind and also cannot see color very well. She is a very independent person and isn't afraid to advocate for herself.
Negative stereotypes? None! Many describe Azaka as some of the best, if not the best, disability representation they have ever seen! To top this all off she is not infantilized by the narrative and is given a unique character outside of her disability.

fun fact for ADHD awareness month:
if object impermanence is "out of sight, out of mind", consider this: "out of sight" is very different for hard of sight people than it is for sighted people. low vision tends to increase object impermanence for us.

Only 10 days left to snag this AWESOME TTRPG bundle!! 💛💛
Tumblr media
Hey y'all! All of the help you've given me thus far has been truly amazing, and I really wanted to thank you for that 💛 I have used the money this far as a safety net for emergencies and to just enjoy life, whether that means going to the movies once a month or buying an Arizona each day with my walk as I build my strength back up.
We are, however, falling a bit short of our goal. I really want to be able to afford therapy more than anything right now, and visits cost about 100 per visit out of pocket with my insurance. So, if I'm looking to get expensive therapy and psychiatric appointments and official diagnosis, it will cost upward of 2,000+ dollars.
Also, I would really like to have some money to pay off my taxes I owe from 2022. I owe, still, about 3,500+ taxes, which I pay off each month. I pay the absolute minimum so I don't have to dig too deep in monthly costs. If I could pay off a chunk of it in one fell swoop, I could save nearly $500 a year and could nip interest accrued from my taxes in the bud.
Finally, and not as important, I need a new desktop computer. My current one is slowly dying, and the fans are giving out. My power supply is also a bit wonky, and my graphics card is and CPU is outdated, meaning I can't stream games well, nor can I play some games that give me solace. It's not imperative right now, but to have this as an option would be wonderful.
So please, if you would, could you purchase a game bundle? It's countless hours of entertainment with your friends for only $25, almost a FOURTH the cost of a AAA video game with HUNDREDS of hours of content. Not only are you snagging games, but you're also helping out a person in need. It's a win win!!!

Snag the games below, and if you can't purchase anything right now, please kindly reblog!

Note
Hi! Thank you for running this blog.
I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but I'm from Europe and slightly struggling with converting units and mapping the information to what I know.
I keep coming across the statistic that in the best-case scenario, a person with albinism has a vision of 20/200 - that's a prescription of -2.5 or so, right? Can it be mostly mitigated with glasses or contact lenses? Or is the best-case scenario 20/200 vision with the best possible glasses/contact lenses?
Also, do coloured contact lenses help at all with light sensitivity in the eyes?
I recognise that there are other problems with visions related to albinism, like nystagmus. If this is not too much to ask, I'm also curious about nystagmus - is it a constant effect or does it get stronger with e.g. tiredness or focus or lack thereof?
Thank you, and please feel free to delete if this is too nosy.
Hi hi! n.n
You’re not being nosy at all! I honestly didn’t know countries outside the US didn’t use the 20/20 scale, learn something new every day, heh
But yes! The best case scenario without glasses is 20/200, which qualifies as legally blind. With glasses or contacts it can be improved (My corrected vision is 20/180) but it will never be perfect.
I’ve never actually worn coloured contacts—but I do use tinted ones which help block out some (not all, but some) UV rays and actually block out blue light too!
As for nystagmus, it never really goes away. Glasses and contacts (contacts more so) can help with nystagmus, but it never goes away. And you’re right—tiredness, sickness, eye strain and sudden changes in bright lights can cause it to speed up, but it never goes away. Nystagmus doesn’t affect the vision though, contrary to popular belief. I don’t notice my eyes moving faster or even at all because it doesn’t really affect the way I see. All nystagmus is is the weakness of a muscle in the eye which causes it to bounce around a bit ^.^ Another thing that can occur is double vision, which I have. With glasses and contacts it can be corrected, though without it, I see double.
Hope this helps! And I’m glad my blog could help you n-n

If you aren't sure how much vision someone with a white cain has, don't block their path with the intent of them hitting you. Just fucking ask them how much vision they have. I can garentee you they will probably be happy, or just comfortable with telling you.
Don't laugh when you prove they can see. Cuz not everyone with a white cain is entirely blind. Some have one for identification. Meaning their vision is bad, but they can funtion without a cain. It just makes it easier than doing the whole shpeal about how eyes work, or habing to deal with drivers trying to signal you when you cant see. (This is a legal thing that is very common in the visual impairment community. When I got diegnosed my specialists made getting me a cain a first priority.)
Some kid tested me today and I whacked him with my cain. He laughed at me and ran away when I yelled at him and asked if he wanted to know how I can see him. Little pussy didn't even want to deal with the consiquences. Next time he tried that shit he is getting a face full of metal lockers.
Its fucking insulting when people I don't know try to make a game out of my vision. I think that kid also asked my friend with tourettes if their ticks were contagious. Don't treat disabled people like they're play things to science experiments. It's dehumanizing
