post-Order 66 AU where Obi-Wan breaks into the Fortress Inquisitorius for some (very important) reason or the other and finds Cody in a cell.
He desperately holds Cody's face through the bars and both of them start tearing up.
Obi-Wan tries to break Cody out, only for Cody to tell him to run, it's a trap.
The door at the end of the hallway opens to reveal Darth Vader.
"The perfect Jedi, with his attachment," Vader steps forward. "Tell me, Obi-Wan, what would the Council say if they could see you now?"
Obi-Wan turns towards Vader.
"When his time comes, I will let Cody go to the Force, Anakin," he unclips his lightsaber from his belt, "something you could never do with Padme."
A menacing, heavily modulated growl. "DO NOT SPEAK OF HER!" Vader ignites his lightsaber, and red light illuminates him from below. He points an accusing finger at Kenobi. "YOU ARE THE REASON SHE IS DEAD!"
The hand around Obi-Wan's lightsaber twitches. "I am not," he calmly responds. "And neither are you, Anakin. Padme died of a weak heart. She died believing in you-"
"LIAR!!"
Vader lunges. Obi-Wan ignites and raises his lightsaber just in time to block a blow which would have taken his head off.
"Now, Obi-Wan," Vader pushes in. Kenobi pushes back. "Now you will feel the pain of losing the one you love."

Talk Shop Tuesday:
Share a few lines, scene snippets, or character interactions you're particularly proud of! Feel free to pick them apart - tell us all about the symbolism, the deeper meaning, the fun description choices you included, anything you're proud of!!
Bonus: as a whole, how much of the symbolism you consciously include in your fics do you think your readers pick up on? Do you ever include references or in-jokes in your fics for the sake of a particular friend or reader?
Oooh gladly!
Morgan and Eowells’s chess game in Chp 10 of i still love you (i promise) is a favorite. I was super into chess when I was a kid, so I love loading chess games with symbolism (there will be more chess games with symbolism in the future 👀)…and his one has it in spades.
This end note explains more clearly who each piece symbolizes and why, but for the quick rundown: Queen = Barry, Rook = Cisco, Bishop = Caitlin, Knight = Hartley, King = Morgan, Player = Eowells.
The king is cornered with a queen and a knight—Morgan is cornered due to Eowells’s skillful positioning of Hartley and Barry in suitable positions to attack. And if the bishop was moved once more, it could’ve cornered the king too—Eowells was trying to convince Caitlin to agree with Barry, and perhaps with more time, he might’ve. The rook stands far away—Eowells didn’t try to persuade Cisco, because Cisco is like a son to him and Morgan is his daughter, so that’s a connection he wants strong and preserved.
I also love the idea of superhero naming, and mantles, and what have you, so two similar examples for that one:
Morgan’s preferred name is her mother’s maiden name. Tess chose that name for Morgan, in a sense “giving” her that name (ofc she didn’t know it would be Morgan’s preferred name, that’s an Eowells decision, but the symbolism of “giving” her that name stands—Eowells did not give Morgan that name, Tess did). In addition, Tina unwittingly named Morgan “Sentry”. So, in a sense, Morgan was named by both of her mother figures!
(On a related note, it’s important to me that Nora is unwittingly named by Iris the same way—this hasn’t come up in the AU yet, but it will, since I love it in canon. More agency for mom figures (female characters in general) in the Flash is sorely needed tbh, and I’m happy to provide it)
And another example is RF!Morgan in sometimes i think you might hate me (maybe you just wanna be me). Team Flash, specifically BARRY, calls her the “Reverse Flash”*, and they’re the first ones to do so. Barry formally names Eowells’s successor—and isn’t that just a kick in the teeth?
*notably, this is not them calling her the same RF who killed Barry’s mom and framed his dad. That is just an assumption Jesse made, and RF!Morgan thus assumed it was something Team Flash told her, which shows how poorly she thinks of Team Flash
Hmm what else, what else…oh! Also this, from your eyes will need some time (to adjust):
Barry trudged into the Wells house—mansion, really—determined to hate him, and determined also to hate this mysterious daughter—the key factor in this man being allowed custody of Barry. He pictured a girl a few years younger, annoying and bratty and loud. Anything that could help him hate her—anything could help him hate this. Except… Except she wasn’t any of those things. Oh, she was loud. Very loud, enough that Barry recoiled with a sharp wince when he first heard her cry. But she…she was a baby. A year old, according to Dr. Wells. A whole 10 years younger than him. He tried to deny how his heart swelled three sizes, how his immediate instinct upon hearing her cry was to ask her what was wrong. It took a few days for him to settle in, and for him to gather the courage to ask to hold her. “Hi,” he cooed. “Hi, Morgan. I’m Barry, I’m your new brother.” (That, somehow, came easier to him than calling himself Harrison Wells’s anything.) Morgan peered up at him with wide eyes. “Bo-ther?” He laughed. “Well, I guess in a way. But...no. Br-o-ther.” He hadn’t laughed, or even smiled this much, since...since that night. Only with Iris, and she…she was… Not gone—they were still classmates in school, much to Barry’s relief—but not a few doors down anymore. No longer somewhere he could walk to in his sleep. He hadn’t even asked Dr. Wells if he could go visit, unsure how the man might take it. When he’d left with Dr. Wells, left Iris behind, things had seemed truly hopeless. But now, holding his new baby foster sister, something had…changed. He felt hope again for the first time in a while.
I love platonic love at first sight, I must confess 💞 especially for these two. I also really love that aside from Iris, Morgan is the first one to make Barry smile since what happened with his mother. It also foreshadows that Morgan and Iris are his two most important relationships moving forward!
A similar moment occurs in Chp 2 of time was(n’t) in our favor:
“Barry!” She screamed, and someone close to his heart—Jesse, he realized—was screaming too, and then Dad had him by the shoulders and urged, “Run, Barry, run!” and then gold lightning surrounded him, and then…
“Someone close to his heart” is literal and figurative here—baby Morgan (who isn’t yet called Morgan because Eowells hasn’t appeared yet) is close to Barry’s heart literally, and figuratively because she’s so dear to him 🥺
And earlier in that same chapter:
“Oh, Jess,” he murmured, slipping out of his bed and walking to her crib, straining a little to pick her up from it. “What happened? Did you have a nightmare?” Jesse just curled into his shirt, whimpering. Barry bounced her a little in his arms, cradling her closer and singing “Twinkle Twinkle”…he even tried reading a little. But when Jesse wouldn’t stop shaking, he figured maybe a change of scenery would help.
This was just adorable 🥺 I love writing them (this is Barry and baby Morgan ofc)
Also, ofc, all the soulmarks in met you at the right time (this is what it feels like) are symbolic, but that’s a given. The symbolism isn’t too hard to figure out 😅 but for now, I’ll hold off on explaining.
All of main gehra tamas tu sunehra savera (main tera) was so wonderful to write—combining my two favorite pairings was so fun—but what was especially gratifying was making Zuko the “magic” one with his rainbow fire, like Aisha in Ms. Marvel is, but also giving the discovery of the cottage to Mai, even though that was also Aisha’s role. It’s not a perfect 1:1 recreation, and tbh I think that’s what makes it work. In any fusion fic, being flexible and bending the rules is the name of the game, and I had fun with it.
And I adore this part:
“She looks at you as though you’re magic.” Mai smiled. “I can’t say that I blame her.” Zuko chuckled, eyes fixed on baby Izumi as he wove another ribbon of rainbow fire above her head—she squealed with delight. “I’m not the one who can summon shurikens and make them bend to my will.” “They’re not summoned.” Mai rolled her eyes playfully. “I told you. I keep them hidden up my sleeve, and when the time is right—” “You release them just so. Yes, I remember.” Zuko smiled, turning to her. “I still say it’s magic, Firelily.”
So adorable 🥰
I could go on, but I’m gonna cap it here for now, because these are the ones that really stick out to me. Though I’m sure there are plenty more that aren’t occurring to me 😅
Also, to your bonus question: I feel like I include more symbolism than my readers pick up on 😅 I do make in-jokes and references that aren’t always caught, and if I don’t explain my symbolism…sometimes a keen-eyed reader will catch it, sometimes they won’t. I’m trying not to over-explain in endnotes as much as I used to, but sometimes I can’t help it—I gotta share! It’s why I love the director’s commentary ask game so much 💞

Eleeria Silverwing General of Blackheart Accord
(Shadowlands 9.0, “Soul Paladin”)
“You would think that you’d drop the social norm of trying to fit into one single box when you’re the type of lady who has so many talents it’s more like a bunch of boxes overlapping.”
( Thanks @lormeus I’m stealing your good RP snippet. <3 )
-
A design based on the Maldraxxus cloth armor, which I LOVE, but which doesn’t suit Eleeria very well in its original iteration, as it’s a little too lich-y. Lost in the Shadowlands right now, Eleeria’s made due with taking armor from her enemies as her plate pieces she brought with her have worn through completely and become unusable. The result is a mixture of spellcloth, bone, and leather as most everyone is far larger than Eleeria, and she can’t easily adjust plate like she can more supple fabric. The end result is perfect for the rogue turned holy paladin.
More discussion of her magic under the cut!
Soul priests are traditionally Draenic, but their work with both living and dead souls is undeniable in canon. Eleeria has been taking lessons in soul mending via the Light from a former Alliance cleric who was trained by Draenei many years ago. Combined with her attachment to Death magic thanks to the deal her wife made to bring her back to life, she has power over living and dead souls, and can mend injuries to either.
Soul magic in my headcanon is a very powerful magic, but requires perfect concentration and emotional empathy from the wielder and also an intense amount of energy. It’s not something she can do every day, and works best when combined with practical mending and therapy, as she heals the soul of spiritual injuries, which results in emotional turmoil as the soul’s owner is forced to confront their past in order to heal from it.
In combat and in day to day work she prefers the solidity of the Light in its basic form, as it is less tiring and far more versatile. For front line combat she vastly prefers her traditional plate armor and her very large warhammer, but as she’s learned recently, she does not need to hide her vulnerabilities behind her plate in order to be a good paladin.

Rating: Mature Relationships: Niccolò Fares/Martino Rametta Additional Tags: Canon Compliant, Slice of Life, Conversations, Fluff, Making Out Summary:
"I think this summer is going to be good."
Snippets of Marti and Nico's life over three days.
read on ao3 or below
Day one
“You look so good,” Nico says, words mumbled against the warm skin of Marti’s neck.
They’re in the Villa Ada park and it’s late, later than they were supposed to leave, but good music and cheap drinks make time fly.
Marti is being kissed drunk and senseless against a tree and he supposes that makes time fly too.
They came for a DJ set at the summer festival being held at the park, a free-entry electronic music night by the lake. The place was nice. Marti had come to the lake in Villa Ada before, but never for this festival.
He liked the atmosphere, noticed how the tall trees were washed white by the flashing lights of the main stage, while the fairy lights wrapped around the fence on the edge of the lake reflected little yellow dots on the surface of the water.
The quiet of the park was broken by the volume of the music, the deep bass vibrating underneath his feet and inside his ribcage. His skin was sticky with sweat and humidity, but a miraculous light breeze made the high temperature bearable. Marti especially appreciated how there was plenty of space to dance without being squished between a dozen other sweaty bodies, and deckchairs strategically placed to sit and chill under the stars.
He liked being offered a choice about the kind of night he wanted to spend, and he and Nico chose to spend it dancing and drinking for hours.
Now, Marti can hardly call stepping in a semicircle and bobbing his head and shoulders to the beat “dancing”. But he has learned not to care. Nico has taught him not to care, with his contagious energy and silly dance moves that Marti is embarrassingly fond of.
Beer makes people bold, but maybe summer does too, and they dared dancing closer than they usually allow themselves to, judging the environment and crowd to be safe.
Stealing touches becomes an addictive game once you start playing it. A lingering hand on the hip, fingers brushing necks, a firm palm on the lower back to steer the other through the crowd. Marti briefly linked their fingers in the queue for the bar, and every time Nico cupped a hand against his pierced ear to talk, he pressed his lips to it, hot and soft.
Well past three in the morning, Nico grinned at him with the tip of his tongue poking between his teeth and asked him if he wanted to leave. Marti nodded and smiled back, dopey and tipsy, letting Nico grab his wrist and guide him towards the exit.
Once outside the festival area, the park was dark and completely empty, illuminated only by moonlight and the glow of the party behind them. They walked towards the exit, the lake on their left, grass and trees stretching for kilometers on their right to the other edge of the park.
Nico took his hand and dragged him in that direction. Marti drunkenly stumbled a little to catch up with Nico's strides, his hisses of Ni, wait met with chuckles and a squeeze of his hand.
“You don't trust me?” Nico teased, turning his head with a smug smile.
He didn't have time to ask where they were going before he was being pressed against a tree and kissed.
And that, that was risky, Marti knew it. But it was thrilling, too, a sense of met anticipation unfurling in his lungs and stomach.
He had wanted to kiss Nico the whole time they were dancing. Almost had. So Marti sighed and kissed Nico back, hummed happily in the back of his throat.
And this is where they are now. Nico kisses him and he tastes bittersweet, like beer and mixed drinks. He barely gives Marti time to breathe, one hand grabbing his waist and the other on his jaw and neck, pulling him closer, Marti’s own hands holding Nico’s face, fingertips sinking in his curls.
Marti can hear his own heartbeat, feel it pulsing in his temples. He tries to keep up with the intensity of it, how Nico sucks on his upper lip and licks inside his mouth, but he breaks the kiss on a drunk giggle he can’t hold back.
He likes kissing Nico so much.
"What if someone sees us?" he asks. Not because he's really worried about it, he just wants to exasperate Nico a bit.
“There's no one here, Marti", Nico groans, rolling his eyes.
Marti ruffles Nico's hair and it's so sweaty it sticks up like a wild mane. It makes him snicker like an idiot, and Nico presses his lips to his amused smile for another long kiss.
Nico nudges Marti's lips open with his tongue and nudges his knee with his own at the same time. Marti slides a bit down and widens his legs so Nico can stand snug between them.
He mumbles something about how good Marti looks in his white shorts. Something about the way they made his thighs look. It makes Marti flush and hide his face in Nico’s neck, mouth at the side of it until Nico tips his chin up to chase his lips again.
Nico's hands are on his face and he uses them to tilt his head back to deepen the kiss, fingertips buried in the curls matted to the sides of his face, thumbs pressing his jaw slack. Marti exhales harshly from his nose and angles his head according to Nico's movements, the pressure of his hands. Nico curls his tongue around his, sucks on it, kisses him so thoroughly Marti can't keep up.
Nico doesn't often kiss him like this, hungry, sloppy. There is always a perfect balance of give and take in their kisses, a familiar meeting each other halfway that's become muscle memory to Marti, a carefulness in the way Nico holds him, like he is something precious.
So when Nico kisses him like this, Marti doesn't know how to catch up, overwhelmed and so responsive to this kind of physical attention that his brain switches off, reacting in slow motion. He feels himself melt into Nico's touch and back into the tree, thankful that he's propped up against it because he doesn't think he could stand on his own right now, legs too shaky to hold himself up, hands hanging uselessly around Nico's neck as he exhales through his nose and moans softly into Nico's mouth.
He lets himself be kissed hard and breathless and lets Nico take, lets that balance of give and take tilt and doesn't mind a single bit.
Nico presses his full weight into him, slotted between Marti's legs. The music from the DJ set is still playing in the distance, and Nico moves his hips to the thump of the bass.
He's half hard, Marti can feel him against his stomach, and it makes his breath catch, makes him squeeze his eyes shut to focus because he's getting hard himself.
It's not easy to stay grounded when Nico pants drunk sweet nothings between kisses, that Marti can only respond to by clutching him closer and whining into his mouth.
Nico latches his lips to his jaw, kisses him wet and messy down the column of his neck, bends down to smooth his left hand over Marti's thigh and hitch his leg up, almost hook it around his hip. He caresses his kneecap with his thumb and his lips never leave Marti's.
Marti is tipsy and being kissed so dumb he can't move, but he holds onto the last thread of sanity left in his brain and plants his shaky hands on Nico's chest to reluctantly push him back, blinking at him with heavy eyelids.
"Can we go home?"
"Can I suck you off?" Nico replies, hands slipping under Marti's shirt.
Marti snorts, tapping his useless fingers on Nico's cheek.
"I'm not getting my dick out in a park," he hisses.
It makes both of them laugh, their drunk silliness breaking the thick cloud of lust hovering over them in that moment.
Nico rests his forehead against his to catch his breath, chest heaving. Marti starts feeling his hands and toes again, tingly from the blood rush, brain still processing in slow motion, heart pounding. He's sure if he closed his eyes and listened, he could hear Nico's too.
When he suggests they get a cab home, Nico snags Marti's phone from his back pocket with the hand not currently on the side of Marti's face and dials the number to a taxi company. He fumbles over directions, not knowing the precise address to the entrance on the lake side of the park.
It makes Marti burst into giggles, to the point where Nico covers his mouth with his palm, that Marti licks without hesitation, earning a wide-eyed scandalized reaction from Nico.
"You know there's an app for that," he can't help teasing when Nico hangs up.
"Shut up," Nico whines, leaning his head on Marti's shoulder. "I'm drunk."
Marti laughs and strokes the back of his head, looking down at him with a fond smile.
They take a few minutes to adjust their hair and clothes. Marti shakily pushes himself up and off the tree and dusts off the back of his shorts, but the dirt won't come off.
"They're ruined," he frowns.
"I'm so sorry," Nico says, saccharine and mocking. He doesn't mean it all. From the look on his face, Marti may even think he's proud of it, for whatever reason.
Marti acts offended and pushes him lightly, but Nico pulls him back in with both hands around Marti's wrists and kisses him again, slow and gentle. It’s a whole different kiss and Marti has to break it to preserve his brain from turning into mush again.
"You ruined my shorts. You have to make it up to me."
"Oh," Nico says, raising a brow. "And how?"
Marti hums and pretends to think seriously about it. He rubs Nico's lower lip with his thumb, dragging it down a bit.
"I have a few ideas."
-
Day two
It’s hot. It’s too hot.
They were supposed to go to the beach with the boys today, but after going to sleep sometime around five in the morning, they woke up past noon with the dull headache and dry mouth of a hangover, considered taking the train to Ostia in thirty-four-degree weather for a minute and decided to camp out in Nico’s living room instead, lying on the couch with the bliss of air conditioning on.
Nico's parents weren't home, anyway, wouldn't be for another couple of days.
Marti is sitting between Nico's legs with his back to Nico's chest, both of them in their boxers. He's comfortable. Warm but not sticky, not sweating. Nico is brushing the top of his shoulders with his thumbs in a lazy back and forth that Marti is mirroring with the hand smoothing over Nico’s thigh.
Air conditioning is the only thing that makes touching possible in this heat. That makes sleeping in the same bed possible. Nico has it in his bedroom, too, something Marti is very thankful for and takes advantage of as much as he can, having spent every summer of his life without it, often sleeping upside down in hope to catch a breath of wind from the open window in his room.
So they could have stayed in Nico's bed, but the living room is closer to the kitchen, and moving from the bed to the couch would give them the illusion of actually doing something, Nico said.
Or something like that. He didn't have time to argue the flaws in Nico’s logic before Nico was taking his hands and helping him up off the bed.
At least they're not hungover anymore. So that's a good thing.
"Who invented air conditioning?"
It's a rhetorical question, and he'd be surprised if Nico had the answer to it. Or maybe not so much. Nico is a well of curious facts.
"Someone who needs to be made a saint."
Marti hums in agreement. "Too bad not all of us can afford this bourgeois luxury," he teases, craning his neck up.
"Then aren't you lucky that your amazing boyfriend has granted you access to this comfort?" Nico says, pinching the back of Marti's neck.
Marti chuckles softly at his funny eyebrows.
"I am very lucky."
He's not talking about the air conditioning.
Marti settles back against his chest and caresses Nico's knee. He glances up at the big white windows with the blinders half drawn. At the puppets hanging by their threads. At the painting on the wall. At the stacks and stacks of books, vinyl records, DVD cases.
Everything here is so familiar it feels more like his home than his own does, and yet he could discover something new on those shelves every day.
He looks down. They're almost lying down, but their feet don't even reach the other end of the big leather couch.
Marti is very fond of this couch. Of the memories it holds.
He snuggles up to Nico and leans his head back on his shoulder. Nico rests his chin on top of it. He starts absentmindedly playing with Marti's right hand. He lifts it up and turns it around like he's examining it, laces and unlaces their fingers. He lays it back on top of his own leg palm up and traces it with his index finger. Marti follows the movements with his eyes, lips curling up in a smile.
"I think this summer is going to be good," he says.
"Because of the air con?"
"No," Marti scoffs, elbowing Nico lightly. Nico chuckles and kisses the top of his head.
He caresses Nico's thigh, trying to put his thoughts into words.
"Last summer was... really bad. For me."
It's a bit sudden, this change of mood. Nico senses it, maybe, and flattens his hand on top of Marti's to hold it. He doesn't know what Marti's about to unpack on him but he’s already comforting him.
"Because of your parents?" Nico asks.
Marti nods. "Yeah. But something else, too."
He's never talked about this before, not even with Nico. There's still something too shameful about admitting it.
He swallows, focusing on their intertwined hands as he gathers the words.
"I had feelings for someone. Long before that summer. It was the first time I liked a boy, and it made me do some shitty things to people I care about.”
He frowns, worrying the brown leather of the couch between his fingers. An unconscious, nervous gesture.
“He and his girlfriend broke up before school ended, and in part, it was my fault. I felt so guilty, all the time."
Marti feels, in a way, like he's reliving another moment of revelation, on a different couch. Only the subjects are reversed, and this is not nearly as scary. But he doesn't know how Nico will react, and the words feel like lead at the bottom of his throat.
A pause.
"It was Gio."
His heart beats loudly in his chest. Waiting for Nico to say something is nerve-wracking, and he doesn't dare look at him.
"I get it. You have good taste in men."
Marti scoffs, incredulous, and turns to slap Nico's chest.
"You're so stupid."
"What, am I wrong?" Nico says, smiling at him.
Marti shakes his head, chuckling despite himself. Here is he, pouring his darkest secret out, and Nico still manages to be the surprising one.
Nico clears his throat, then. "Seriously, though. I get it. He's your best friend. He's safe. He's wonderful. It makes a lot more sense than you may think."
He sounds honest, and kind. Marti sighs.
"I guess." He looks down, spreads his fingers out on Nico's thigh. "I don't feel guilty about that. Not anymore. But I meddled with his and Eva's relationship. I can't live that down. Eva and I are okay now but..."
"Does he know?"
"No. I can't tell him. Someday, maybe. When we're old and wrinkly."
Nico hums and squeezes his hand. "It's Gio. You know he'd understand. He'd forgive you."
Marti shrugs. "I don't know."
He can't tell Gio what he did to him and Eva, because he can't tell Gio the reason he did it. He can't put their friendship at risk. Not now.
Nico brushes away the hair at the back of his neck and presses a kiss to it. “Can I ask how you got over him?", he mumbles, cheeky.
Marti grins and tilts his head back, booping Nico’s nose.
"A weirdo followed me into the radio booth."
Nico laughs and brings his face up for a kiss. He moves to lie down and drag Marti half on top of him.
"Thank you for telling me, Marti."
Marti smiles and kisses Nico again, long and gentle. He already feels so much lighter with a portion of this weight off his chest.
"It’s going to be a good summer," Marti says, "because I’m with you. If the me from last summer could see me now, he wouldn't believe it."
Nico smiles so softly, it melts Marti’s heart like the July sun.
"I can say the same."
-
Day three
Being with Nico is like constantly being distracted. One moment, you’re walking into the kitchen to get a late-night snack, the next, you’re kissing him against the counter.
Marti likes Nico’s kitchen for many reasons, one of them being its wide counters. Perfect to sit Nico up on them. He bends down, grabs the back of Nico’s thighs and lifts him up. Nico gasps, his o-shaped mouth turning into a grin as Marti steps between his legs and wraps Nico’s legs around his waist.
Nico is taller than him now, and Marti has to lean up to kiss him. He unhurriedly parts his lips, rolls his tongue, one hand coming up to stroke Nico's neck.
He bends his head and presses kisses down the side of his neck, rubs the tip of his nose on the column of his throat. So much bare skin in front of him, he wants to pay attention to all of it.
Nico’s chuckle snaps him out of it.
“Do you want some fruit?” Nico asks, twirling a red curl with his finger. “Marisol bought it at the market.”
“Sure,” Marti smiles up at him. “In the fridge?”
Nico nods, pouts when Marti uncrosses his legs to move. Marti opens the fridge and grabs the bowl of fruit with peaches and cherries from the bottom shelf, then searches for a knife in the drawer while Nico makes grabby hands at him.
He stands back between Nico’s legs and places the bowl down by Nico’s hip. He looks up and Nico looks like a happy cat, with the way his lips are curled up at the corners. He bends down and kisses the corner of Marti’s lips, squeezing his waist with his thighs.
Marti peels the peach, cuts it in half and offers it to Nico, who takes a bite straight from his hand. The peach is ripe, and its juice runs down Nico’s lips and Marti’s hand. Nico takes Marti’s wrist and kisses the side of his hand, sucking the juice from it.
Marti mirrors him, leaning up to kiss Nico’s sticky chin. It’s sweet.
“What are we doing?” he chuckles, scrunching his nose.
Nico laughs too. They finish the peach with Marti standing comfortably between Nico’s legs. It’s messy, and Nico nips on his fingers when Marti feeds him, makes a whole show of sucking on them to rile Marti up.
Marti squeezes Nico’s thigh as a warning and shakes his head at him.
He doesn’t need to get ideas. They spent the best part of the last three days naked. He can still picture Nico after Villa Ada, pushing him against the wall by the front door as soon as they stepped inside and going to his knees, his pretty lips wrapped around him and getting him off hard and fast, Marti’s dirty white shorts on the floor. All the showers they took together, lips sliding across wet skin, Marti hugging Nico from behind and reaching around to stroke him.
Marti cranes his neck up and kisses Nico deep and slow, fingers sinking in the hair at his nape, until Nico is moaning into it and pulling back.
Marti gloats, satisfied.
He takes a cherry and puts it between his teeth, and Nico leans in and bites the other half. He plucks the pit from his lips and looks like he doesn’t know where to put it. Marti offers a hand for him to throw it. Nico blinks at him, looks surprised.
“Really?” Like that’s supposed to gross Marti out.
Marti shrugs. “Of course.”
Nico smiles softly and puts the pit in his palm.
They eat all the cherries. Not all of them come with kisses, but almost. Marti eventually throws all the pits back in the bowl, not wanting to leave his precious spot between Nico’s legs to reach the trash bin.
The window behind Nico’s back is open and the cool night breeze feels wonderful on his skin. A soft tune plays from the stereo in the living room, and they sway a bit, Nico’s arms around Marti’s neck and Marti’s around his waist.
It’s one of those moments that are so perfect, you want to freeze time and keep reliving them forever.
Nico yawns and rests his forehead against Marti’s.
“Wanna go to bed?” Marti whispers, and Nico nods.
“Okay,” he says. “Hold on.”
He moves his hands under Nico’s thighs and Nico crosses his legs around his waist, holding onto his shoulders as Marti lifts him up again.
Nico is heavy, but he can carry him to bed. He even makes a detour to turn off the music.
“I wouldn’t mind being carried like this the whole time,” Nico says, leaning in for a quick peck.
Marti huffs, crossing the threshold to Nico's room. “You overestimate me."
“Next summer, then. You’ll get buff. Lift me like a feather.”
Marti smiles.
“Next summer.”

Timeline
So I’m doing a Full Canon Rewrite, because I hate myself. I’m not gonna go into detail, but I am just bursting with pride at knowing that the timeline that I have Labored over for HOURS, checking for details that don’t make sense and fixing them, (Like people starting the night drunk and showing up sober two hours later and on duty), and even adjusting the lunar cycle to fit the hell alternate universe that Teen Wolf is apparently set it (It’s thirty one days long, instead of thirty. I TRIPLE checked)
I have checked everything, and have successfully proven that my timeline is MORE ACCURATE that the one on the Teen Wolf Wiki. Honestly, I would offer mine up to fix theirs, but I don’t know how.
According to their timeline the lunar cycle is only 24 days long in the first month, 22 days the second month, and 38 days the third month. Not to mention they have outrageous breaks in time where nothing happens, which makes no sense. It’s bizarre, and I’ve checked my dates against the actual calendar from 2011, and the dates shown in the the phones on the show (We get a beautiful snippet of Scott’s phone that marks March 11th at one point, and I ran with it.)
I’m not sure how long the timeline I have will hold up, as I’m only just entering Season 2, but the whole point of this rewrite is to fix the mistakes that the writers made with both characters, lore, and timelines.
Honestly, having this timeline has helped so much with my writing, although it’s also complicated some of it. If anybody wants to see what I have, I’m totally happy to share a version of it that isn’t specific to my fic. Though, like I said, I’ve only got Season 1 mapped out in its entirety, and there are some things that just can’t be fixed, like weird start and end times for semesters and sports seasons.
Feel free to just message me if you’re interested, it’s a great resource for working within canon.
Edit: Sooo, not that anyone will see this, but I forgot to add on the warning that my timeline is Stiles and Derek specific. I only mention the other characters when what they’re doing affects Stiles or Derek in some way. So if I give this timeline out, pretty much all details of Scott’s life and gone-zo. Forewarning.

Fix-it Leo: Katie / KG
welcome to something im tenatively calling “fix-it leo”, where i take my really old OCs and try to make sense of them! i’ve previously done this with Shadowy, which you can read here. seeing as im redrawing & “bringing back” a few other old ocs i figured id make this a series of talking about things! unlike the Shadowy one this doesnt have pictures beyond the initial ref bc i dont want to murder my hand and im also not sure how to draw some of this
today’s subject: Katie! also known as KG.
KG’s from 2010-ish, so some time after Shadowy but before the Shattered Worlds rework. to be as specific as possible, he’s from a RP setting that people that have known me closely have at least heard mentioned, if not seen snippets of it outright: KL, the massive crossover including any character and setting me & my friends wanted to RP.
as a self-insert character in crossover hell, Katie is VERY weird.
it was really hard for me to find info on Katie, because i actually had a bunch of OCs using that name that were my direct self-inserts for RP & story purposes both in and outside of KL. the unifying idea was that he was kinda just Me but in a fictional universe... and, apparently according to what info i DID find, all of the various Katies were. actually the same person, just in various conflicting situations with various conflicting backstories? so me stitching it all together got kinda weird. i did find a starting point though, so, uh... here we go!
as a general overview, Katie is pretty much just me. autistic, ADHD, likes videogames and art, bad social anxiety conflicting with desperately needing validation from everyone around him. he also has a very short temper and no volume control, which was usually a comedy thing but could also lead to him lashing out and doing/saying things he regrets, mostly hurting his friends. as a result he was kinda unpopular in his hometown... except for a small handful of friends he went to school with.
one night, he decides to go camp out with his friends to watch a meteor shower cause hes pretty fascinated by comets & shit like that. one of his friends, Elson, was acting pretty weird about it but Katie’s too excited to take much note of it up until the meteor shower “starts early” and Elson runs off into the woods. confused and startled, he gives chase. then, uh, the fucking apocalypse happens.
a lot of plot happens that im skipping over bc this is gonna be long enough as it is, but it gets revealed that Elson is actually an incognito alien named Elohim and an alien invasion is happening and wiping out civilization, and Katie is just. running out of sanity. being a main character SUCKS. he has a tragic backstory now, his friend (who he kind of had a crush on?) is an alien and is partially responsible for his tragic backstory, they join a rebellion after confirming “yeah your family’s dead as hell” and go to space, and finally find out that the leader of the aliens got a case of “jewelry makes you evil”.
they save the day obvs, with the help of some other people they ran into, and Katie has a moment of “well, fuck” bc his hometown is still extremely exploded and his family is still extremely dead and he’s like .5 miliseconds away from a mental breakdown. he then has a conversation that goes roughly like this:
person that helped them bust out of alien jail: hey, i think i know someplace you can stay katie: my house exploded person: cmon trust me
and then it turns out that that guy is actually Ninten and he’d just helped save the world with a fictional character, and before he has any opportunity to go “wait, what” he gets pulled through a portal by him and ends up somewhere totally different. more specifically, he’s now in the Earthbound universe, and his brain is going “[dial up noises]” a whole lot bc its not like his life was weird ENOUGH now he’s just... ditched his home reality??? with Ninten’s help??? and Ninten’s taking all of it in stride and ends up explaining the multiverse to him and that he’s one of the guys who ended up with the ability to worldhop and had stopped by Katie’s universe because he knew the possessed alien guy. he’s also apparently used to having to help people acclimate to massive paradigm shifts caused by multiversal fuckery.
so Katie’s just kinda trying to wrap his head around this, but takes Ninten up on his offer to go get to meet people and he goes to the Nowhere Islands! which was like, basically the hub location of KL. and then things get EXTRA surreal for Katie, because like... he used to write fanfic, and come up with story ideas that he daydreamed about a lot before everything exploded, and he bumps into Kurousu who is his OC. and there’s a lot of “UHHHH”-ing but he plays it off and befriends her, and its finally starting to sink in that yeah, he’s hanging out in this super weird crossover reality now, and he tries to make the most of it!
then some... weird things start happening. Tank, Joseph, and Vince make a jump to the Persona universe to do some plot stuff and run into Katie there, where he’s apparently joined SEES? except the last time they’d seen him, he’d been acting as a lackey to one of the arc villains because of a FMian from the Megaman universe screwing with him and taking advantage of his trauma to create a “new” Gemini Spark. and they start to write it off as “well i guess he’s like Tails where there’s some AUs of him running around” except... he recognizes them each time? but looks different and has different backstories and nothing really adds up. the next time a protagonist sees him, it’s Artemis post-getting turned into a Nobody finding Katie’s Nobody, Teixak, who apparently was very excited about getting to meet Roxas... despite, according to himself, having been living in Twilight Town for as long as he could remember. while also being very aware and very confused that that contradicts everything else about him.
teixak: eeee you mean i get to meet roxas?! he’s my favourite kingdom hearts character!! >w< rasemtix: ...you do realize you just told me youre from this universe, right? you were just explaining to me about how you lived here with leixand until the shadows attacked you two and stole your hearts. teixak: eh..? hm. ............Hm. but.... hm.
meanwhile on Katie’s end of things, he gets his heart stuffed back in his body and he reconciles with his externalized FMian-induced evil side and various other things from various other worlds, but everything feels weird and disjointed. he remembers attending school at Gekkougan, but also remembers living in Echo Ridge, but also remembers Twilight Town, but also remembers living in a boring world that got invaded by aliens where also all of this was just videogames and books and animes and OCs. and then things start getting weirder for him. he makes a joke to Artemis about “hey, remember when we got in a big fight cause i hit you with a sign?” and he doesn’t remember it. he teases Ninten about something personal and Ninten freezes up and asks him how he knows that, and Katie gets confused because he told him. he has an even more personal talk with T1, and then has the same talk later but with slightly different words. and it’s starting to look like it’s not just “various Katies”, it’s Katie also dealing with various... varieties of everyone else, and he’s pretty much spinning a wheel on “what version of events am i in today?”
he finally gets an answer after a while-- something went really weird and really wrong when Ninten first brought him into the KL multiverse. the Katie that told Gomess about the Andromeda Key is the same Katie that joined SEES is the same Katie that got his heart stolen is the same Katie that got rescued from an apocalypse, but he’s sort of... existing simultaneously in different realities with slight “adjustments” to his personal history depending on what universe he’s encountered in. he also exists “outside of canon”, so some of the weirder memories he has are from rewrites or scrapped plotlines or noncanon moments that sometimes clip into canon when theyre not supposed to. apocalypse!Katie is the “primary”/original Katie, and that’s where all his weird meta knowledge comes from.
it’s... really confusing, and nobody really “gets” it, least of all Katie himself. he just knows that he’s ended up with a bunch of cool powers, although he’s not really sure what he’s doing and has been a villain at least two universes. he also has a severe case of main character-itis (hence getting a Persona, getting his heart stolen, etc), and still isnt sure how to tell if he’s interacting with the “canon” versions of everybody or not. he’s at least unable to cause weird bizarre paradoxes by interacting with himself; trying to visit one of the universes he has an “echo” in just causes a perspective switch to the resident Katie. Katie also has access to all of his abilities as long as he’s not in a universe with a resident Katie; apocalypse!Katie has no abilities at all, starforce!Katie only has his FMian transformation, kh!Katie can only use his Keyblade, etc. this only starts being a thing after he “clicks” with his new existence.
he also has various outfits and aesthetics depending on universe, with the one i drew being his “outside canon“/default one. he gets cat ears! and Outsider eyes. Katie also has a bad habit of stealing things from universes he visits, and as a result has a collection of random things that he really shouldnt.

The Bullets Reloaded

Spoiler Alert
This quest has come about like three times now? But I just got the time to write about it.
Since World in the Sky became a thing, I've realised that Ryouko is actually a super important character, and her development has been on par with Satoru and Hazuki. Likewise, her trance quest has a lot of value add for long time players of the game.
What I particularly enjoyed about this story-wise is similar to what I enjoyed about Hazuki’s trance quest. Whereas her one twisted what should have been a beautiful memory into a burden, a ‘curse’, Ryouko’s does the complete opposite, and manages to turn a scene of despair into a catalyst for progression and courage.
This quest picks up right after the events of the death game, where Ryouko discovers Game Master's true identity right before Lost happens and everyone becomes tamashii.
As I had not completed Lost World when I first played the factory escape quest the final image of that quest had always remained with me: Ryouko’s haunted face and her feeling of betrayal.

“I thought you were an ally”
Now that I do know Game Master's true identity, this scene becomes a lot more impactful (the pieces of the puzzle that is World in the Sky also start to come together).
Story wise this is just a big character development arc for Ryouko because nothing actually happens that impacts canon (which seems to be a defining feature of the more interesting ranking quests). Ryouko is still shook by what happened but, after coming to terms with it as a tamashii, her sense of justice convinces her to get Takuya and Yuki to take her back to the factory. She feels she must go to the place where everything fell apart in order to rectify wrongs and start anew.

“This factory was where the Escape Game took place...This is where I must start again.”
The contrast between how Ryouko is now, compared to how she was before, is stunning. She changed her armour after meeting team Serion, complete with a pretty impressive looking gun from Akito. She looks more like a huntress than a policewoman, literally like she levelled up from a civilian to a hero. This is also appropriate to one of the key lessons Ryouko learns, which is that just protecting is not enough anymore, she has to attack too.
Of course, they don't get to properly take down Game Master; it's never that easy. When they arrive Game Master says his real body is elsewhere and he makes them play a game instead, continuing his Jigsaw aesthetic.

“I am no longer in this world”
The game is to “defeat him” but because it's not his real body he can just keep regenerating. Ryouko figures out she can use Akito’s gun. Akito told her when it stores up enough power something “marvellous” will happen. Her straightforward naivety and blind trust contrasts with her serious nature and is something that's never changed about her, which is both satisfying and amusing.
Interwoven throughout this quest are snippets from Ryouko’s interactions with her dad, and also with Toa. Once again, players who have done the relevant quests will feel that extra sense of accomplishment: because they've been with Ryouko on this journey, the growth in her character seems appropriate and unrushed.

Toa, Ryouko’s subordinate: “Ryouko, you were the one who taught me that emotions are powerless without action”

Ryouko to her dad: “One day I want to become someone who can protect others, just like dad!”
When she finally does shoot the bullet we are rewarded with not one but two shots of her unique to this quest. Just in case you didn't think Ryouko was special enough. I don't think any other trance tamashii to date has had this kind of treatment.

Anyway Ryouko's series of quests had culminated in an impressive climax, so it is a little annoying that her character has actually taken a step back in World in the Sky, because that place has basically wound time right back and frozen it to the moment directly before Lost. Hopefully she'll improve as that story continues.
Also looking forward to seeing how the anime will depict Ryouko’s character growth.
One final extra:
It’s a great little detail that instead of Kikyou or Scientist (who is now Eiji, according to the anime), Game Master explains the mechanisms of the ranking.

“You can adjust the difficulty of the next quest”

AMP For WordPress: Know Why It Might Be Important For You
As mobile phones are increasingly taking over how people consume material on the internet, it’s critical to make your web sites mobile-friendly.
Page load speed is an essential ranking indication according to Google, which is why every website owner attempts to reduce their page load time score by milliseconds. Optimizing page load speed on mobile devices, on the other hand, has proven to be a difficult task for everyone.
In February 2015, Google, the current standard for search engine optimization, launched the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project. The goal was to provide a set of guidelines for websites to follow in order to reduce page load time and thereby enhance the user experience on smartphones.
What is AMP?
Google’s AMP project is an open-source initiative that aids in the delivery of fast website content. AMP enhances content navigation on mobile devices in addition to increasing page load speed.
In a nutshell, AMP pages are stripped-down versions of web pages that keep all of the key content components when delivered. The syntax of AMP sites may differ from the standard HTML code of web pages, and it restricts the usage of JavaScript and CSS to decrease page size.
How Does AMP Work?
AMP simply replicates existing online information in a stripped-down HTML format.
Pages that are “converted” to AMP undergo a three-step transformation:
HTML AMP converts standard HTML code into a slim, distinctive markup.
JavaScript — a resource fetching language that has been reduced down to remove non-essential rendering.
CDN – instantly caches websites and adjusts them to AMP.
AMP also reduces CSS requests and eliminates a lot of heavy graphics, backend code, and often CTAs.
The existing canonical version of the page will not be replaced by the AMP pages. Both versions will be available to readers.
Accelerated mobile pages Google have a special advantage. Google top stories include AMP- enabled websites. They provide the best possible version of the web pages.
AMP pages are suitable for content-focused pages that need further optimization for smartphone rendering. AMP shortens the time it takes for these sites to load on all devices.
You do, however, have the option of choosing from-
A responsive website for desktop, smartphone, and tablet users, as well as an AMP version for mobile search results on Google.
For desktops, there’s a website, and for mobiles, there’s an AMP version.
A mobile-friendly, desktop-friendly, and tablet-friendly website
It doesn’t matter if you don’t utilize AMP as long as your website is appropriately prepared for speed and uses Rich Snippets (where feasible). This eliminates the possibility of consumers being confused by several listings in the SERP.
The most common questions are
Should I get accelerated mobile pages for WordPress?
What if I want to implement AMP for my website?
So much confusion right?? We had it too. But the final conclusion for all the above questions, whether it’s required or not, is totally based on your website’s requirements and the needs of your users.
Here are some pros and cons of AMP which can let you decide if AMP is right for you or not. Let’s have a look together
Pros :
Accelerated mobile pages
AMP
helps pages to load faster.
Since mobile phones are a wide and common way to grab content on the web, it is necessary to optimize your web pages for mobile devices and AMP does the exact thing for your website.
It can get more traffic to your website because of the faster load of the pages.
AMP SEO also helps to enhance your Search engine ranking. Because of the faster load of ads on your website, users can get more engaged with it.
If you’re setting up the AMP for your website then your server can get reallocated to the desktop traffic most as mobile content of the AMP pages SEO will load from the Content Delivery Network (Google’s Server).
Here are the two most used plugin AMP :
AMP
AMP for WP – Accelerated mobile pages WP lets you set the AMP and speeds up the mobile pages.
But wait, every good thing comes up with cons or we can say limitations.
Cons:The main limitation of AMP is: loss of control over your mobile web pages
As AMP will create its own structure to minimize the HTML code, your custom CSS can’t be applied on those pages. You need to design AMP mobile pages separately. This means you need the extra resources/efforts to make the Accelerated mobile pages AMP look similar to the established aesthetics of your website.
As said above, AMP is separated from the mobile version of the page, additional tasks will be added up with AMP to manage the new addition of the product or frequent changes of content.
Some experts may say that it’s preferable to build the front end with highly optimized mobile pages rather than giving twisted efforts to the AMP.
For the accelerated mobile pages for wordpress, you need plugins extensions to match the aesthetics of your website. For example website’s default popup will not work on the AMP pages, we need to recreate this popup again. No doubt WordPress has many plugins which can do it by the sleeves but we need to give the twisted efforts for the single task.
Wrapping up
In the end, with these best accelerated mobile pages for wordpress, you can get many benefits for your site but you need to give extra effort by creating the AMP mobile pages. AMP is mostly a user experience enhancement.
People these days are extremely impatient, and even a fraction of a second in load time may have a huge influence on engagement metrics. Google is heavily involved in AMP’s promotion. They have a tonne of case studies with success stories in them. These are worth looking into, but keep in mind that Google is far from impartial.

Sunday Snippets, Mar 26, 2017
And the terrifying number of unfinished things went up again, such is life I guess. It was a pretty productive week with a bit over 7k written. Next week should again give me opportunity to write, since I’ve got a couple of days off work.
This week I worked on the fic where Bucky hangs out with everyone else, and I had to rethink its structure a bit. The chapters were getting long, and I want them to be nice and bite size. I did solve the problem, not sure how many chapters it’ll result to in the end, but I know how to go about it at least. Also it’ll have the most obnoxious chapter titles I’ve had yet, I’m going with the “In which blah blah” thing.
It’s a bit different from what I’ve previously written in that there are more POVs (Nat and Sam besides Steve and Bucky) and Steve and Bucky interact for a major part of it mostly with other people. I’ve noticed that I need to keep a close eye on how to refer to characters, because all the POVs obviously have a bit of a different sets of names they use. For example with Bucky, that’s how he’s for Steve, but Nat thinks of him as James and Sam as Barnes in this, and I have to stick to that. I need to keep an eye on these when editing.
In total I’ve got some 13k written, I think I’m about a fifth done, so that would indicate a final lenght somewhere between 60k and 70k. So I’ll be working on it for a while yet.
Other thing I worked on this week was the new idea. It started as a one shot, then I thought I may need to write a companion for it, and now it threatens to be a three-parter. So that went according to the plan. I have an extremely vague idea what the two other fics will be like, so they may need to stew for a while, but the first one is fully plotted, and I’ve got about 1.5k written. That’s also about a fifth, I’d say. This week’s excerpt is from this fic.
The basic gist of the story came to me when I was thinking of a scenario where a mistaken identity trope would work in the post-CACW canon, and it sort of ran away from me. This story is yet another where I probably should apologize to them. Pretty much all my recent ones have been like that, maybe I should whip up another one for the happy domestic verse just for balance...
***
This isn’t quite the beginning of the fic, there’s some general set up before this bit, but this is the part where things are starting to happen. This story is set a few years in the future, the thing with the Accords is solved but Bucky is still chilling:
Steve slips out of the Halloween party held at the Avengers Tower before it’s even ten. The mood in the party has been happy, even raucous despite the dress code that had demanded evening dress with masks. Steve just couldn’t find it in himself to enjoy it. All he could do was think that it was four more days before his scheduled call with Bucky’s doctors in Wakanda. Interacting and socializing felt too exhausting, and now he’s walking down the street toward his apartment in Williamsburg.
It’s not much like the Brooklyn he remembers, but on many days Steve thinks it’s a good thing.
There are a lot of people on the streets, but Steve enjoys the anonymity the mask he hasn’t bothered to remove provides. These days, since his job involves a lot more time in public wearing civilian clothing, he’s even better recognized, and the more modern hairstyle than he had during the war no longer confuses people. Now, for just one night he feels like just another person.
He’s home soon enough, and he pauses to stand in the middle of his living room. It feels fake, because the room looks lived in. There are books and photographs and the few potted plants that Natasha has brought him and that he diligently takes care of. There are his sketchbooks and pencils on the coffee table and an easel near the window where it gets good light. The room looks very different from his apartment in DC, and he knows it indicates he’s better adjusted. He just can’t feel it. It’s like he makes all these motions of life and it all feels like pretending.
He’s tired, but not the kind that would go away with sleeping, even if he doesn’t really do enough of that either these days. He’s tired of this life, tired of not knowing what he wants, or more precisely knowing, but also knowing it’s impossible for him to have. It’s been like that ever since he woke up in the future, bar a few days after Siberia, days when his life as he knew had been completely turned around, but Bucky had been there. For a few days, Steve had felt light, not carrying the shield, not having the responsibility beyond his friends. He’d thought that despite all the hurdles ahead of them, they’d be able to make a life.
And then Bucky had made his choice, and Steve had seen all his hopes turned to ashes.

I have said, as have others, that Isaiah seems to have more uniqueness about his language than other parts of the Hebrew components in the canon. Yet in English, partly because of the libretto of Handel's Messiah, we know the lilt of the language like no other book. According to my notes from the Oxford conference on the Psalms in 2010, Isaiah is the third most popular book among the DSS. So this work is and was loved by many. What then do we do with the translation of its 'purple passages'? You know I was raised within Christendom. And I am still on speaking terms with my invisible Lord. I am supposed to be secure and I have no reason to doubt it. But - there is always a but - Christendom is not a good example of purity of religious policy. Violence and fear and suppression abound in this history. I have noted that much of it seems to come from the translations we read. Whether violence from our own need for self-defense, or the violence against each other through 'punishment'. This word in English has no dominant stem in Hebrew. You can read punishment into Hebrew stems, but it is never the only possible gloss for that stem. I never use it in my reading (among many words I never use). I never required it. Particularly, God's visitation פקד does not need to be read as punishment. Humans punish each other for perceived violations of rules or codes of honour. Not so with God. Thieves and prostitutes get into the kingdom of Heaven faster than the righteous. How come? By the way, Christendom is not the only religious tradition with examples of terrible religious policy. (I won't go on. If you are of some different religious tradition, just look around you. And stop being violent, fearful, suppressing or exploiting others, or self-protective). There is no shortage of violence (חמס) in the world or in the Scriptures. But it is not good to imitate it. Aviva Kushner begins her review of Alter's 'one-man translation' of the Hebrew Bible with Isaiah 2:2. First the music.
Isaiah 2:2 with English underlay (adjusted from the textual order)
She quotes Ginsberg, one of Alter's mentors, who seems to take every accent as an excuse for a new line.
In the days to come,Hebrew וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בְּאַחֲרִ֣ית הַיָּמִ֗ים, first 3 words, the sense of word 1 is included in to come The Mount of the Lord’s HouseHebrew הַ֤ר בֵּית־יְהוָה֙ words 6 to 8 Shall stand firm above the mountainsנָכ֨וֹן יִֽהְיֶ֜ה ... הֶהָרִ֔ים words 4, 5, 10 And tower above the hills;וְנִשָּׂ֖א מִגְּבָע֑וֹת words 9 and 10 (repeated) And all the nationsכָּל־הַגּוֹיִֽם words 13 and 14 Shall gaze on it with joy.וְנָהֲר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו words 11 and 12
He has to be happy with having some of the lines out of Hebrew word order (as must all translators in many places. But this is far from true in all places in the text). Ginsberg uses a phrase 'gaze with joy' for נהר. This is a curiously passive sense for an action verb that takes its motion from a river. I think he does as many do, interprets as he reads. His next reading will be a different aspect of the same stem. Language works that way and so do readers. But translations need to take care to let the reader interpret. Kushner explains that 'Ginsberg follows the medieval grammarian Ibn Janah and Ginsberg’s academic colleague Baruch Schwartz in deriving it from the term for “light” in biblical Aramaic, and thus he has the nations gazing toward Jerusalem.' Obviously then, it is not a translation of the Hebrew. The stem is not אור. There is only one word-form of light in the Hebrew of the Bible that begins with nun. That is in Psalm 76:5 נאור. I have never seen this stem morph into נהר. Alter: And it shall happen in future days that the mount of the Lord’s house shall be firm-founded at the top of the mountains and lifted over the hills. And all the nations shall flow to it . . . KJV: And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. Bob: And it will be, in the aftermath of the days, established will be the hill of the house of Yahweh as the first of the hills, and it will be lifted up among the hillocks, and all the nations will flow together to it.
This is my word for word with stem visible through the hover function of the mouse.
והיה and it will beהיה באחרית in the aftermath ofאחר הימים the daysיום נכון establishedכון יהיה will beהיה הר the hill ofהר בית the house ofבית יהוה Yahwehיהוה בראשׁ as the first ofראשׁ ההרים the hillsהר ונשׂא and it will be lifted upנשׂא מגבעות among the hillocksגבע ונהרו and will flow togetherנהר אליו to itאל כל allכל הגוים the nationsגוי Translation is a lot to take in. I can only just get away with the word order I have chosen. Slow down and it will make sense. I look at every jot and tittle (and some I choose not to include in the English). KJV has left out an explicit definite article. I have chosen hill and hillock rather than mountain and hill as contrasts. I do use mount and mountain and hill - all for הר. Hillock is גבע. I seem to have added together to the stem for flow. I did this 5 times - Here and in the parallel in Micah. Also Isaiah 60:5, Jeremiah 31:12, 51:44. Don't read too much into it. KJV does this in those three places but not here or the parallel in Micah. My use of it may have happened through my automated translation which I ran frequently when doing my work to save me typing. (Yes you would call this translation the lazy-one's translation too.) I never use the word future. The Bible is concrete as Alter says, and future is not yet concrete. There may not be 'punishment' but there are consequences. The Bible is not fatalistic. Yahweh is the one who is, who was, and who is to come. This is immanence, becoming itself, with us, establishing us. Are we up to it? I don't see that firm-founded is an improvement on established. My glosses for this are prepare, establish, base, reliable, for the most part. God prepares, establishes and is a reliable base. The stem occurs 284 times. We should get used to the idea. Here's a verse at random that includes establish.
Do you reward this to Yahweh, senseless people and unwise? Is he not your father? He purchased you himself. He made you, and he established you.ויכננך and he established you
My work has a very high degree of consistency. Perhaps you can begin to see my motivation also. It is not primarily literature, not primarily religious, but it is a consequence of my faith in God, the discipline he established in me for programming, and the love he placed in me for language and music.

The Price of a Life - Chapter 10
Title: The Price of a Life Fandom (s): Fullmetal Alchemist/Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Summary: I always thought waking up in another world would be a lot more…interesting. At least slightly exciting and terrifying, but it really wasn’t. It was more of a sudden and underwhelming event, that landed me in the company of fiction and its ignorance to modern physics. I thought it was a dream. Boy was I wrong. Characters: SI/OC, Maes Hughes, Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric, etc. Rating: PG-13
I awoke to a beeping sound that was slow, steady, and repetitive. I must have slept through my alarm for work. I shifted in the bed, a sharp pain shooting up from my hips. I must have been planting yesterday, as my knees too were sore and my back ached.
I yawned and tried to roll onto my uninjured side, the blanket over me wrapping itself tightly around my legs so much that I had to return to the uncomfortable position of my back. I sighed loudly through my nose, my sister's voice ringing out impatiently.
"Irish, Irish," She repeated in tandem with the alarm clock. I thought nothing of it until I tried once more to roll over and the pain in my hip began to burn. Mary never called me Irish, she was the older sibling who always used my full first name when addressing me in annoyance. I opened my eyes slowly, allowing them to adjust to the light.
I expected to see the familiar ceiling of my room, with those glow-in-the-dark stars and dream catchers scattered above my bed, but I was only met with an empty, well lit ceiling. That was even more odd than Mary calling me Irish. I started to push myself up, but my arms gave out under my weight making me fall back to my bed with an elegant plop.
Just when I thought I was going to fall back into an enchanted and pain free sleep, I heard someone arguing nearby. Normally this wouldn't have caught my attention, given that my younger brothers were always arguing over something, but this voice was deep, and angrier.
When Matt, Brian, and Aiden argued, they were never the kind who got upset with each other over their disagreements. Matt, despite being a walking mountain of puberty, still retained his high squeaky voice. So, it couldn't have been them who were arguing. I tried to listen to the words that were muffled by the door, but I could only catch snippets of the conversation.
"She...witness...long enough...wrong-"
"...are...we...can...soon."
The first voice sounded vaguely familiar, and putting the pieces together, I realized this wasn't my room, and the beeping beside me was a heart monitor. With my new revelation, the beeping sped up as anxiety overcame me. The thoughts from the previous night came back in a rush of cold terror, my hands shaking and cold sweat dripping down my forehead as I tried a few feeble breathing exercises to calm down.
Everything was going according to plan more or less, and the only problem at the moment was that I was once more in a hospital. I tried to look around the hospital room to see if there was anyone else there. Seeing no one, I once again picked myself up, my right side and leg hurting so much the world spun for a moment as I adjusted myself so that my back lay against the headboard of the bed. The room was still very blurry, on account of my missing glasses and the disorienting bright lights, but I could make out an IV drip hooked up to my left hand and a few chairs to my right.
The door creaked open and I jumped, even more light pouring in from the hallway making it near impossible for me to see who was making the dark silhouette against the light. A clipboard clattered to the ground as the figure was pushed out of the way by another man who quickly approached me. A softer pair of footsteps followed, a quiet voice murmuring an apology before joining Mustang at my bed side.
"Irish, I need you to tell us what you know about Hughes' disappearance, time is of the essence," The dark eyed man snapped, looking down at me with no hint of sympathy or concern. My eyes widened and I shrank away from him, the suddenness of the inevitable interrogation startling me from my fantasies of sleep.
"Sir, with all do respect she just woke up-" The figure from the door, a doctor perhaps, said nervously.
"Shut up!" Mustang growled, clearly on edge. I didn't know if I could lie to him when he was like that, he simply radiated frustration and pure hate. Riza placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Sir, please calm down," Surprisingly, the Flame Colonel sighed and crossed his arms, allowing Riza to stand closer to me. Her betrayed no emotion, though I knew she must have been feeling the same urgency her superior did. "Irish, I know you've just woken up and are recovering, but if you can tell us anything about the other night it would be appreciated." I stared at her blankly, my hand slowly reaching up to my head to feel a sharp pain at the back of my head where it crashed into the phone booth's door. I looked down, feeling sick as I recalled the events.
I zoned out for so long the doctor soon asked if Hawkeye and Mustang could leave. Riza looked up from me and shook her head at Mustang, who's glare seemed to bore a hole through me before his shoulder's sagged in defeat and he motioned to Riza to leave. I couldn't let them think Hughes was alive. That was the deal.
"Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes is dead," I murmured, Mustang quickly returning to my bedside with Riza in pursuit. I could feel warm tears of stress beginning to well in my eyes, but to the two attending officers, I hoped they seemed to be tears of sorrow.
"That's what you told Private Braun," Riza said softly, though in no way trying to affirm the statement. I whimpered and rubbed my eyes.
"She told me to tell you that," I squeaked, sniffling. I had little to know idea how to convince these people that Hughes had been killed, so I decided to play off the canon story where they believed Ross had killed him. Of course, there would be no names mentioned. Riza said something, but I purposely ignored the question. "Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes is dead," I repeated.
"Irish, focus. Who is 'she'?" Riza asked, playing the good cop for this interrogation. Truth probably knew that I'd be facing a bad cop sometime in the near future. I shook my head, grabbing fistfuls of my hair in feigned frustration.
"I...I don't know," I sobbed, the heart monitor next to me picking up its pace as my breathing quickened and tears flowed. "I don't know,"
"I believe that's enough for today, you're going to make her condition worse, now please get out, she needs rest." The doctor advised, Riza looking to Mustang for an order. He looked at me coldly before nodding. The two left and the doctor called upon some nurses for aid in replacing my bandages and removing the heart monitor. I felt as if I was going to be sick as I slowly calmed down. It was a difficult feat after how worked up I had gotten myself.
I leaned back against the headboard as nurses seemed to swarm me, checking my pupils for dilation and using stethoscopes to check my breathing. I closed my eyes and started thinking about my plan to convince them that Hughes had been murdered. Of course there came the morbid thought of convincing them that I had murdered Hughes, but none of them would think that, of course.
From what I had collected from the nurses and doctors, I had been there for only two days, thus explaining the lack of a feeding tube when I awoke. The investigation of Hughes' disappearance was ongoing, but it had a pessimistic outlook.
It was being kept quiet, and I wasn't even sure if Gracia had been alerted of her husband's sudden and unscheduled departure. They could have told her he was on urgent call in the East somewhere. I was so worried about her and Elicia, mostly because Hughes could be anywhere and/or dead and they had no way of knowing he was (hopefully) safe from the country's impending doom. But I couldn't tell them. I needed to keep the feelings of hatred and sorrow genuine so that key people would make the correct key decisions.
I had woken up in the middle of the afternoon apparently, the day after the guards found me. After a check up from the doctor and many different nurses, the room was finally empty and I was told to rest. As if I could rest after what I had just been through. My leg and side were killing me, the fresh bandages stinging with alcohol and disinfectants.
I wanted to cry, or get sick, or just fall asleep, but I couldn't. I had put all of my trust in Envy, and the entire plan hinged on him keeping his word. I didn't trust him, but I didn't really have a choice either. It was all Truth's fault that it hadn't gone according to plan. If the entity hadn't pulled me to the Gate to stall, I would have been able to follow through with my original plan. Hopefully it saw that stalling hadn't changed the end goal, at least not too much.
The door opened unexpectedly, causing me to jump with fright. The pain that ensued was enough to sharpen my consciousness for the inevitable interview. Instead of an impatient and angsty Roy Mustang and his ever calm and collected Lieutenant, I was greeted with the stone like faces of Henry Douglas and Captain Focker.
Of course, those names came after a curt introduction. It took me a few moments to recognize Douglas' later connection to Ross' arrest, but Focker was relatively recognizable.
"Good evening, Miss. Irish, I am Colonel Douglas and this is Captain Focker." Douglas said as the two approached my bed side. Focker had a note pad and pen in hand. "We'd like to ask you some questions about the night of Lieutenant Colonel Hughes' disappearance. Is that alright?" It humored me that the man even bothered to ask permission to interview me, a key witness to a crime.
I gave a numb nod, allowing myself to stare aimlessly into the distance to enhance the shell shocked look I was hoping to achieve. Douglas opened a folder Focker handed him, and began to read.
"At 19:00 you were observed by Private Müller entering the Investigations Wing of Central Command. Upon your exit, at 03:00 she reported despite your injuries, you ignored her presence, took a moment to see the first telephone stall, before exiting the building to travel just short of 400 meters where Officers Wundt and Lange discovered you. Does this sound correct?" I couldn't believe I had gotten that far away from the building, or the time frame for which I had been with Truth in the Gate, but it seemed accurate nonetheless.
"Yes," I said, my voice still hoarse. Focker made note of this. Douglas closed the folder.
"Can you please begin by telling us what occurred between the hours of 19:00 and 03:00 please?" I looked down at the question, but spoke nonetheless. I had not even considered my alibi, and although I had no doubt in my ability to bullshit the entire story, I was cautious to avoid plot holes.
"I was going to the Archive room. My friend - Reginald Azir - he had been teaching me Amestrian history, and I wanted to continue studying while he was hospitalized. But I got lost. I eventually found the bathroom and figured someone would come by who knew the way - at least to the exit, because I guess I dozed off while I was waiting. 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross found me and directed me to the Archive room," I paused, my eyes blank and my hands shaking as I recalled Lust's face and all of the blood that left small crimson puddles in and around the Archive room. " W-When I got there...there was so much blood...everywhere...so much blood-"
"Did Ross not escort you to the Archive room?" Douglas said, interrupting my self-induced panic. I looked up and shook my head, sure to make eye contact.
"No, she just gave me directions and left, in the exact opposite direction." I said, cracking my knuckles out of nervous habit. Focker copied my exact words.
"Did you not come upon any other officers?" I shook my head, looking down again.
"No, actually. It was as if they had all gone home for the night. The halls were rather deserted." Douglas nodded his head sagely, waiting a moment for Focker to copy down the statement.
"So, you are at the Archive room. Do you enter it? Is there anyone in there?" I felt goosebumps rise on my arms, courtesy of the drafty window, not fear or shock.
"I-I did go in, just a few steps to see if someone in there needed help. But then the door was closed behind me, and someone came at me..." I trailed off, having my hand drift to my right hip as I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment. They wanted a story, so I might as well give them one. "The lights were out, and I didn't see who it was. I got out somehow before they could come at me again, but they said...she said, 'Lieutenant Colonel Hughes is dead,' as I ran-"
"Do you know who 'she' might have been?" Douglas asked tentatively, as if he were poking a sleeping bear.
"No...maybe...no? I didn't recognize the voice, but it was definitely female. On the higher end of the spectrum, but kind of throaty." I shuddered at the recollection of Lust's voice. "I just ran. I don't know how I found the front desk, but there was a trail of blood in front of me, and I assumed it must have been Hughes'. I...I don't remember Adele saying anything to me...to be honest I was kind of tunnel visioned at that point, just following the blood trail without thinking really..."
I trailed off, as if recalling that isolated feeling. In reality, I was pondering how the next few scenes would (logically) play out.
"Did you stop at the nearby telephone booth?" Douglas asked, gauging my reaction. I clasped my twitching hands together, and hiccuped as I focused on the pain at my side to force some tears from my eyes.
"Yes," I whispered, thought it was close enough to be classified as a whimper. Focker whispered something to Douglas. They still needed more information from me.
"Miss. Irish, I know this is difficult for you, but what did you see at the telephone booth?" Focker said, his deep voice trying to sooth my soft sobbing. I swallowed and quickly stopped the tears, wiping them with the back of my right hand. It was bandaged, the knuckles sore and raw from the pummeling I had delivered.
"T-There was...someone there, with a gun, standing outside." I hiccuped, folding my hands once again. From the feel of them, the burns had nearly healed, but the stinging alcohol on my knuckles had replaced the tight, red skin. "And there was someone inside; t-they had been s-shot, they were on the ground - like sitting, but as if they were asleep."
I struggled to find an eloquent way to word the image I had formed in my head, but the combination of what they could perceive as a limited Amestrian vocabulary and trauma could easily explain the chunkiness of my sentences.
"Did you see their faces, either the person in the booth or the shooter?" I bit my lip so hard it drew a small drop of blood.
"No, not the shooter...I was blindly following the trail of blood, and they pushed me into the booth's frame after yelling at me," I ran a hand through my hair and felt the sizable bump at the back of my head. "I don't remember what they said, the voice was...feminine, but it sounded different, younger perhaps. I-I fell down and saw who had been shot, they were dead...Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes was dead. The person - the shooter - placed the gun to my head," The hand that had been at the back of my head traveled to my left temple. "Here, they told me to tell people that. To tell people that Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes is dead."
I stared ahead at the foot or my bed blankly, allowing my hand to drop back into my other.
"What happened after that?" My shoulders drooped slightly, and my eyes went back to my bruised knuckles.
"The person left...they took Hughes with them. They picked him up like, like, child? No, like bride," I held my arms up to mimic the often cited bridal style. "I almost fell asleep, I was very tired...I lost a lot of blood. I started hitting the ground - I don't know why, I was angry and upset and it kept me awake. It took a little while to get back to my feet, but when I did I tried to follow down the path - the direction they took him. I didn't get very far before those officers found me...I was so tired...and - and frightened," I sniffed, my voice cracking. "I just wanted to...to switch places...I wanted to be the one who had been killed. If...If maybe I stopped and got Adele's help...then maybe we'd have reached him in time..."
Tears ran down my face inconsistently but fueled by emotion. I was internally chastising myself for not being a little faster, to maybe save Hughes some mental and physical trauma.
"You just get some rest ma'am, our investigators will find Lieutenant Colonel Hughes," Dauglas reassured, though he sounded quite grim as Focker copied down the last pieces of my account. I looked down, my breathing labored and hands shaking.
"Good day, Miss. Irish. Thank you so much for your time," Focker added as the Colonel began to exit the room. He placed a hand on my shoulder, trying to comfort me. "Do not speak to anyone about this matter, at least not until we can straighten out what happened."
He quickly followed his superior, notepad of my story under his arm. I yawned, remembering how tired I still was. Although they had taken me off of liquids, I still was hooked up to some type AB negative blood. How on earth did they figure out I was AB, let alone negative?
I laid awake in the early morning hours, nothing but the blood mystery to occupy my thoughts. When I tried to inquire with a nurse, she responded negatively, unsure who had determined which blood to use as a replacement. It was around 11:00 when I remembered AB could be donated to anyone - a universal donor to quote Ms. Shake from freshman year - and I was being paranoid for no reason. Unfortunately, the worry and concern had given me a horrible migraine.
A knock at the door only served to irritate my aching skull.
"You have a visitor,"
"Big sister Mac!" Elicia cried, running to my bed and jumping onto me. I gave a short gasp of pain when she forced me to shift my weight so that my right side couldn't be favored, but I still managed to smile.
"Hey kiddo," I croaked, my voice hoarse and foreign to my ears. Gracia also entered the room, but much more slowly than her daughter. Immediately I felt the sober atmosphere around the woman, her eyes not nearly as bright and a smile only barely visible upon her chapped lips. I also felt a pang of fear at the sight of the woman, who had held a gun to Hughes' head.
"Look! Look! 'member Mike and- and his present? See! It's a horsey!" The girl giggled, oblivious to my condition as she produced the sloppily transmuted brown object that vaguely resembled a donkey. She was also unaware that I hadn't consciously attended the party, but that wasn't for anyone to know. "His arm was hurt, but then he made it for me out of the floor! Isn't that so cool?"
"Yeah, it is," I managed, trying to clear my throat but instead inciting a coughing fit. Gracia lifted her daughter from my bed and placed in her in one of the nearby seats.
"Let's give Irish a little space, okay sweetie?" Gracia said, her voice devoid of its usual peppiness, and her chiding not as motherly but more demanding. I worried about changes the loss of her husband would have on her, if she had even been alerted of his probable death. This change in her could have merely been caused by a lack of information from the military was providing her. Mrs. Hughes sat down in the chair next to her daughter, closer to my head. "How we doing?" She asked quietly, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I noticed her bitten fingernails, and her ever present wedding ring was slightly off-centered.
"I've been better," I said softly, sitting up slowly. This time the world only spun for a few seconds before I could focus on Gracia's sad smile. "And how are you doing?" I asked, searching for any sign of immediate distress.
There was nothing major, just the slight drooping of her eyelids and a momentary frown. It was enough for Elicia to look up at her mother with big, worried green eyes.
"Mommy?" She asked quietly, her voice barely a squeak. "Where's daddy?" I think my heart imploded a little. Gracia, however, immediately brightened up at the comment, ruffling Elicia's hair.
"Why don't you go outside and say hi to Sergeant Brosh? You told me his little sister was at the park with Mike the other day. What was her name...Agnes?" The little girl's worry evaporated. And, it seemed I was saddled with the babysitting duo once again.
"Okay mommy," She said with a laugh. "Aggy said her big brother was the best, just like big sister Mac is the best!" I think my heart melted a little at the cuteness, but more than the adorableness of her exit, was the cold fear of the reason for her dismissal.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked to Gracia, who held her smile until the door closed, muffling Elicia's greeting to the Sergeant. The door closed without hurry, cutting off the warmer lights of the hallway, leaving us in the solemnity of the cold white lights above.
"I haven't been told much, and I doubt you have either but," I felt tears prick at my eyes as the strong, independent mother before me started to fall to pieces. "They think," She paused a again to hiccup and attempt to stem the flowing tide of tears, "They think that he's dead,"
The last part of the sentence was a barely audible gasp of pure sorrow that turned my melted heart into a twisted knot of regret. I let a few tears run freely down my face, not tears of sorrow but those of pity and we wept for a few moments of near silence, before Gracia seemed compelled to collect herself.
"I-I wasn't allowed to see you until they were convinced you had told them everything...They haven't," She took a deep breath, trying to wipe away the tears, "They haven't told me what happened, or what they think happened..."
Remembering what Focker had told me, I looked down, almost ashamed that I had to withhold this information from her.
"I'm sorry," I said, looking not at Gracia but at my battered and bandaged right hand. "I'm so sorry...I-I should have...I wish-" Suddenly a pair of strong arms wrapped around me, holding me tight. I hadn't realized the tears flowing down my cheeks until now, when I buried my head in Gracia's shoulder.
"Oh, Irish," She said, her tears now stopped and voice holding steady, "I'm just glad one of you is alive, I'd be just as upset if it were you in his place, and wishing it were wouldn't change anything. I love you too," She released me slightly, holding me shoulders as she looked at my face. I ignored the pain from my side the best I could, but a few tears of pain and regret still slipped through. "Now, get some rest, get better, come home. Elicia is getting bored without her knight to help her defend the castle."
I hiccuped, and gave a small chuckle. Gracia stood up, and took a card from her purse. "Feel better, I'll see you tomorrow," She left the room, sounds of Elicia's exuberant retelling of her trip to the park seeping through the cracked door for a brief moment before silence returned, only filled by my own breathing and the hum of the lights.
It was quite simple on the front, simply stating 'Hope you feel better' in a flowing font reminiscent of a Hallmark card. I opened it to quite the surprise. Elicia had drawn her family, and myself, standing in front of the apartment building.
Gracia, made distinct by her light brown curls held Elicia's hand, the smallest human stick figure. Maes, creepily similar to my previous stick figures, held hands with his wife and myself. I was drawn with white crayon, only distinguished by the waxy sheen on the paper and the red dots of my eyes. Over the complex was a sloppy rainbow, and a childish sun smiling down on us. It took me a moment to notice the equally invisible ferret that was at my stick figure-self's feet.
Gracia's clear, cursive handwriting signed her name, along with a curt 'Get well soon,' whereas Elicia had attempted to and partially accomplished to sign her name, most likely with the aid of her mother.
I was moved to cry again, realizing that I had come to love the people around me as much as they loved me. Instead of crying, I smiled, and closed the letter. Holding it close to my chest, I closed my eyes and eventually fell asleep.
I woke without any knocking or whispering this time, the quiet of the room allowing me to cling to the last remnants of the dream I had the night before. I had been home, with my family, but there was no gravity - or at least something that made everything and everyone float around like balloons. I'm pretty sure Thomas Hiddleston was there too - or maybe some other famous actor, but the dream faded too fast and with few sticking details.
It was nice to wake up on my own, left to my own thoughts and some temporary privacy. Yawning I placed the card from the Hughes' under my pillow, amazed it had survived the night without a wrinkle or crease. After a few moments of lying there motionless, I began to envy my morning routine back at the Hughes residence.
I'd get up on my own by at the latest 7:00, 4:30 being the norm for both school and work back in my world. I would bathe, dress for the day, eat breakfast with Gracia and Elicia - sometimes Maes if he was running late for work. By 9:00 I would be at the Main Street Grocery Store, the first costumers and morning deliveries groggily arriving. I missed the smell of throwing out bad eggs and bad milk, and other items on the non-refrigerated shelves that had expired.
I rolled over, happily freed of the IV by a nurse a few moments after a quick inspection by a doctor. My leg was feeling better, and by the doctor's assessment, I could be on crutches today, and walking on my own at the end of the week. I didn't know if it was Sunday or Friday, but it didn't sound like too long to bear.
Today I was supposed to start testing my limits - with a nurse present to observe and assess my progress. According to the doctor - I never caught his name - she'd be by sometime after noon. The nurse arrived at 11:00.
I was sitting in my bed, left leg to my chin as I observed the wound. Most of the heavy bandaging had been removed, leaving only the stitches. The scars would be small, at least for the puncture wounds, whereas the longer scratch would leave a fainter but longer scar.
To the nurse, who opened the door without knocking, I must have looked quite strange with the waist of the pants outstretched so I could inspect the wound. It was probably more embarrassing for me, or at least it felt that way. The woman took no note, almost ignoring me entirely to make sure the door was shut tight behind her. Suspicious? Yes.
"Are you the physical therapy person?" I asked tentatively, though the woman's violet eyes turned on me like daggers and answered my question. "Oh, no wonder you're early..." The woman - well, Envy I guessed - crossed her arms and leaned against the door.
"You are incredibly inconvenient," He growled, his voice only a few notched higher and more feminine than normal. I shrugged, though my heart rate and stress had definitely increased in the homunculus' presence.
"So I've been told," I said, my words faltering slightly as the disguised Envy made his way from the door to my bed in few strides. The woman he was impersonating had really long legs.
"I don't know how a pathetic human like yourself knows as much as you do, but you do," Envy stated, gripping the end of my bed. "How?" The question hung in the air for a few moments, almost a moment too long.
"I already told you-"
"The Truth does not give information that liberally, much less specifically. And from the looks of it, the price you paid was a small one, so there is no reason for you to know as much as you do without other means. Tell me how." I was actually surprised how worked up the homunculus was - had I been too aggressive after all? My mind raced for a moment, only able to focus on his mention of my exchange with Truth.
"Prove to me Maes Hughes is safe," I stated as coldly as I could, somehow keeping my voice steady. "And I'll tell you what you want to know,"
"How can I prove-"
"Prove it, or I'll take the liberty of snuffing out a sacrifice," I interrupted, secretly terrified that Envy had gone back on his word. Considering how much freedom he actually had to kill Hughes, I worried the homunculus had known about my bluff all along. The artificial human hesitated.
"The human is safe, the pathetic thing. I have the ticket stub from the train somewhere..." The homunculus changed back into his normal form, sure to see that the blinds were closed before small bolts of crimson lightning danced around the nurse's body to become more masculine and much paler.
"I never took you as the sentimental type, Envy," I hummed, feigning endearment. It disgusted him, which amused me.
"Here," Envy barked with a snort, his voice dripping with revolt at the thought of a human admiring him. Which of course wasn't the case with me, I was just as scared and hateful of the artificial human as when we first met. I snatched the tickets from his hand gingerly, afraid he might have some trick up his sleeve. Not that he was actually wearing sleeves.
The two ticket stubs were for one two way trip and a one way trip to Bumecu. I could only speculate where Envy had gotten the money to pay for the tickets. I raised an eyebrow at him and set the stubs down at the side of my bed.
"Did he get across the border?" I asked, still skeptical of Envy's honesty. The personified sin sat at the end of my bed and sat with his legs crossed.
"Yes," He spat, annoyed by my distrust, "I escorted him to the border myself, we got to Olma, a town a few kilometers from the border where I left him at a hotel and told him to stay. It's not my fault if he didn't," I nodded, unintentionally sighing with relief.
"So, what do you want to know?" I asked, after what was a clearly agonizing few seconds of quiet for the impatient homunculus.
"How do you know-"
"If you're going to say everything, I'm going to stop you right there. I don't know everything, I'm not Truth, how could I know everything? And I already told you, I made a deal with Truth," I said, ignoring Envy's growing irritation.
"Yes but it's not - ugh, you shouldn't know so much for such a small exchange! And you shouldn't know such specifics like what happened in Ishval or Greed-"
"Oh, did he get melted yet?" I asked, once more interrupting Envy. He gave me a look that told me that asking if Greed had been 'melted yet' was impolite at the least. "Sorry, it's just - I've been in the hospital for Truth knows how long, and I just don't know the time frame in which it happened so I'm a little out of the loop as far as time goes,"
Haha, both figuratively and literally.
"Yes, Greed was 'melted' as you put it, inconsiderate human," I rolled my eyes at the insult, I had better things to worry about.
"Okay, did someone see you guys leave the park and stuff? How did you cover your tracks? As of know, he's believed dead. A formal declaration and service should follow soon if the investigation runs dry," I inquired, aware that a messy job by Envy would make my own much more difficult.
"I don't think anyone saw us, no. We kept to the shadows and alleyways until we made it to the river. I dumped his clothes in the river, and then we got to the train station, bought our tickets, waited until 6:00 for the first train, and left, okay?"
"Where did you get him new clothes?" I asked out of curiosity, when I should have been more concerned about who they may have come in contact with at the station.
"I stole them, of course, some drunk guy. He won't remember us when he wakes up in that ditch, that's for sure." Had I really expected a different answer? "And what's it to you? You only asked me to get him out of the country,"
"Well, I assumed it was in our mutual best interest to smuggle him out of the country without attracting the attention of military investigators, nice touch of throwing the clothes in the river by the way," I said, hoping that was what had sealed the deal for the investigators. If only there were some piranhas or other flesh eating creatures in the river to cement the idea of Hughes' death. "Are you sure no one of importance saw him at the train station?"
Envy, ever irate with my questions rolled his eyes.
"Of course not, and if someone did, Wrath would take care of it," I bit the inside of my cheek. Of course the homunculi would underestimate Mustang's persistence. "Now, about what you know-" I clicked my tongue at him.
"If you're going to call my exchange 'unfair' then you clearly are only concerned with what is skin deep," Wow, that actually sounded kind of cool. Envy didn't seem as impressed with my eloquence as I was.
"What did you trade? Some worthless memories, perhaps your pathetic human conscious?" I snorted and crossed my arms.
"Well, considering I have a perfectly good memory and I do feel bad about hitting you the other night, no. Why does it concern you what exchange I worked out with Truth?" I expected Envy to fume about this, but he seemed confused abut something. Had my English eloquence failed?
"You regret that?" He asked, surprising me with the lack of hostility in his voice. Did I regret pummeling Gracia Hughes' gorgeous face into a bloody pulp? Yes. Did I regret hitting Envy? Maybe. I admit it had felt good to vent my anger at him, but in hindsight I felt what I could assume was the normal human response to hurting another human being - guilt.
"Uh, yeah, sure. I mean, you're alive, I'm alive. You're kind of human, I'm human; am I supposed to feel happy about hurting someone?"
"I do," Well, no duh Envy, "You're probably only feeling bad about hurting a wonderful creature such as myself,"
"Oh, yes, I feel awful about harming a face as adorable as your own, you lovely crocodile,"
"Why thank-" He caught the hint of sarcasm in my voice, "You little, miserable brat-" The door opened, revealing a very surprised Reginald. It was a good thing Envy could shape shift so quickly. The nurse giving him a look that would have killed quickly drove him from the room.
"I'll...give you a minute," Reggie said unsurely, closing the door. I gave Envy a smirk of triumph. I was glad not to spend a minute longer with the freak.
"Well, I'll see you later alligator," Envy turned his deadly glare on me.
"We're keeping tabs on you, Miss. Irish," The feminine voice was sickeningly sweet, enunciating my name. I had never told Envy my name, but with the homunculus' resources it mustn't have been too difficult. "Stay away from the Fullmetal Alchemist," Envy took long strides to the door, looking back at me to make sure I got the message.
"If it were up to me, I'd stay as far away as possible from the pipsqueak," I said, remembering Reggie was right outside the door, followed up with a curt, "Thank you ma'am," Envy avoided eye contact with Reggie as he quickly exited the room.
With his exit, came Reggie's entrance. It was nice to be in the presence of a real human for a little bit.
"Did I interrupt something?" I laughed, as did he. Reggie was standing on his own, and wearing street clothes instead of his uniform. His arm was barely noticeable, since he was wearing a jacket over the collared shirt.
"No, she's was pissed at me for messing with my stitches," I said, smiling at him as he sat on the bed next to me. "And how are you? You look fit as a fiddle," Reggie smiled, subconsciously placing a hand on the sleeve where his arm would be.
"I'm doing better, I was discharged from the hospital the day you came in actually - you won't believe the trouble I had getting the Sargent and 2nd Lieutenant to let me visit you," I nodded - they hadn't met Reggie at all, "I actually have tickets to Rush Valley, the train leaves tomorrow morning," I stole a peek at the blinds, the noon sunlight glaring down and not entering the room, "I was hoping you'd come with me, but, in the state you're in-"
"Oh, crap. Did I ever give you the money? I'm not sure how much they'll charge when you get there - remember to look for the perky blonde - her name's Winry Rockbell, she knows me. If I can't get the money to you - or if they won't wait for the money - just be persistent, Winry's a sweetheart but it takes a while to persuade her to do something if money is on the line," I slowed my rant, noting the hint of sadness in Reggie's eyes. "Did you ever finish those codes I gave you?" This seemed to help him lighten up a bit.
"Yes, actually, I've gotten quite far on the 'Four-Score' one. Where'd you ever come up with that by the way? It's actually quite an interesting speech," I shrugged, thinking back to the nonexistent village of Ire.
"It's like the creed of my village back in Drachma," Reggie nodded, though he didn't seem entirely convinced.
"Your village must be very...open minded," He commented, to which I responded with a huff of feigned annoyance.
"How dare you insult my heritage! May the great Utka damn you to the seventh circle of suffering!" I said dramatically, doing a sign of the cross and bowing my head with clasped hands. Though I was merely joking, Reggie seemed to take it seriously.
"S-Sorry, I didn't mean to offend," I gave him a weak shove.
"I was joking, Reggie. I'm not some Bible-thumping grandma," I said, reaching for and not finding any of my necklaces. A moment of internal panic passed with the realization that I would just have to wait. They were probably being held with evidence or something.
"Bible? Is that your scriptures?"
Ah, yes. Back to the good old times of my first year in public school - a radical display of Catholicism! Does your father make you wear dresses? Are you not supposed to talk to boys? Are your brothers and dad sexist? Do you hate gay people? The answer of all of these was no, but I was still the strange religious girl who was ridiculed for saying grace before lunch. Freshman year was quite the learning experience, at least in terms of adapting to fit society's expectations of a lunchroom.
"The Bible? Yes, but don't ask me to parrot it back to you cover to cover. Priests go to school for a decade or more to do that, not me." I said, though it came out more harshly than I intended. "Are you religious?" I asked tentatively, hoping I seemed as innocently curious as I really was.
"Not really, Amestris isn't exactly a theology hub. Most people believe more in science and proven fact - not to offend your religion or anything, it's just the cultural attitude here is a bit different."
"I get it, and to be honest, we have as much faith in science as we do in our religion. We try to strike a balance between the two; to me, science is a byproduct of our divine creation to be curious and inventive. I'm no priest, so I can't say what their view of it would be, but that's what I believe." I rubbed my bandaged hand, having brushed it a little to hard against the bed. "This theology shit is boring, have you decided on the model you want? Personally, I think going for a higher percentage of chrome - Winry said it'd be less resistant to rusting, but the downside is that it's weaker."
"I was thinking about this one," Reggie pulled out the automail advertisement I had given him on the first day after his surgery. The model in question was glorious and sleek in design and color, a dark grey metal with silver fittings. Though, I bet Winry could make the same thing, but better. We talked about the models and the money to pay for them - I hadn't given him the money, so begging or his own money would have to suffice.
"Miss. Irish," A familiar voice called from the door, startling me for a moment. It was the nurse Envy had impersonated, but with bright brown eyes instead of cold purple ones. Reginald had to leave.
"See you, hope you get to Rush Valley safe and sound Reginald!" I said, giving him an enthusiastic wave as if he were boarding the Titanic - but, you know, without the whole sinking and dying part.
"See you, Irish," He called back as he exited the room. I sighed, looking to the nurse who immediately began to run me through the summary of the physical therapy. A nervous Denny interrupted before we even got started with the simple flexion exercises to help me regain full hip movement.
"The Fuhrer wants to speak with you," He glanced behind himself. "Now,"
