**BOOK REVIEW** A Very English Murder by Verity Bright ⭐⭐ 2/5 stars e-Arc received from @netgalley in exchange for an honest review. • Lady Eleanor Swift witnesses a murder during a storm. When she goes to investigate, there's no body and all the evidence is gone so naturally the police do not believe her. So she decides to take matters into her own hands by solving the murder with her butler. Nothing happened in the first 22 chapters except Ellie, who just inherited her late uncle's estate, giving social commentary on male attitudes towards women in the 1920s. Once the social scene is set in this regard it serves no purpose and becomes annoying. We could have jumped straight from chapter 2 to 22 and the novel wouldn't have suffered. Despite clearly being made out to be a forward thinking woman for her era, Bright then ensures Ellie feeds into all the irritating stereotypes of 1920s female characters. She feels all dizzy and faint when an attractive male character strays near her and lines of dialogue include "ouch my head" and other stupid phrases women don't say. (Tones of Reece Witherspoon's TedTalk). I found the plot incredibly easy to guess. Whilst the list of suspects made no sense and were seemingly plucked from thin air, once those characters actually started participating in the plot I guessed the murderer very quickly. The best part of the book for me was the last 7 chapters as Bright excels at building tension and creating intrigue by only giving parts of information and withholding things in an attempt to keep the reader guessing. However the narrative voice felt wrong. 3rd person but it read as bad fanfiction and Ellie kept vocalising thoughts to her dog...I personally think 1st person would have worked much better... • I thought I was going to adore this book from the blurb. 1920s murder mystery with a female sleuth kicking stereotypes. Serious Miss Fisher's Murder Mystery vibes. Unfortunately this just didn't hit the mark for me. Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray~5🌟

This was an ARC that I won in a BookishFirst giveaway. Thank you so much to BookishFirst and the publishers for providing this copy for review! Definitely be sure to get this book when it releases in September!

I seriously loved this book so much. I loved that it was split between three main POVs, Adiah (first person, told in past), Koffi (third person, told in present), and Ekon (third person, told in present). It was such a unique reading experience!

Next is the writing style. 10/10! I loved Ayana's writing style so much! It really transports you to the world of Lkossa! I can't wait for the sequel!! Koffi and Ekon are such amazing characters and I want to be back with them so bad. The magic system was unique and you can tell it took a while to put together. It's so thought out and I really appreciated it.

The whole story/setting was very African inspired and it was brilliantly done! In the author's note, Ayana says that the language (yes!! There's a whole new language! Think Ravkan or Kerch from the Grishaverse) was based off of the Swahili language, which is such a cool language to build off of. I loved the addition of new plants (edible and deadly) and animals (mostly deadly) in the Greater Jungle. It made it feel like it was a real place.

The twist at the end... I will never get over it! It leaves the reader wanting more, and I was just in shock for the last 20 pages. I even started to tear up a little. Definitely be sure to read the trigger/content warnings (I'll post them in the comments!), and go preorder Beasts of Prey NOW!!!

Firstly I would like to say thankyou to @litworldclub for sending me a copy of 'A medieval tale: First lessons' to read and review. 😊 We follow the story of a young medical student Aliya who finds herself the victim of an untimely accident. Or so she thought. As she wakes to find herself in the body of a medieval countess Lilian. As she struggles to find her bearings, Lilian - formerly Aliya - finds herself amidst a loveless marriage, corruption, thieves and a tiresome estate. She has a choice, dwell on her new life or change it. . . I thought the plot to this story was good. There was alot of detail about the various families given at the start of the book which got a little overwhelming, but as the story evolved you learnt more of each character and their background, painting a better picture. By the middle of the book I was back on track and enjoying watching the story unfold. I would have loved to see more input from the other characters in the book as their stories kind of take a back seat to the lilians and at times seemed nonessential to the storyline.
