List of Upcoming Fiction Podcasts and Hidden Gems

'either' by Open Doors, Closed Doors: quirky and enthusiastic, I'm a big fan of the art made for the cover of each episode. Started in May, if you like unique worlds like Nightvale, you might like this.

'Road X' by Gea Arce and Maya Appavoo: A supernatural murder mystery with a fun cast of characters, I've been following the development of this since they released their first episode in March. The cast seem very lovely and they're very appreciative of fanart over on the gram! I think it's cool that they have a tarot card aesthetic going on aswell. Check it out!

'Smile Grove' by ISOTOPIC PRODUCTIONS: A horror podcast that explores mental health and the industry surrounding it. The lack of actually helpful resources for those in need is probably the horror itself (but you didn't hear that from me!) Focuses on unique characters and some dark themes. Following the development and growth of this podcast was such a treat, it's obvious how much effort the creator has put in based on our chats. Also features some familiar voices if you've listened to Camp Here & There!

'THE NOWHERE MALL' by haunted casette: a horror-comedy about the daily lives of cryptids described as humans. Someone linked this in a server and its first episode was released this June! I hear auditions are still open. It seems to be coming along well so check it out if you want to follow their progress.

'Seven of Hearts' by Seventh Knight Productions: a podcast that follows seven characters in a mysterious town. A little older (not really, like 2021) and the story is wrapped up but I was lucky to follow the production and episode releases sometimes! This one is sometimes reccommended to fans of Camp Here & There, I think you'll like it.

'Francis Forever' by Leo Zahn: Hidden gem by my mutual that follows Francis Webb and their desire for immortality. A mystery adventure podcast that explores life, death, and the everything yet nothing inbetween. Leo also works wonders with sound design and it's fun to yap our ideas towards each other.

'SUPERSUITS' by Faustian Nonsense: I recognise this as the podcast that would play before Jack of All Trades (which is also very good). It's a comedy podcast about the shenanigans that lawyers endure being lawyers for super heroes and villains. Released around February and is looking pretty good!

'The Department of Variance of Somewhere, Ohio' by Rat Grimes: A sci-fi horror about a secret government group that handles supernatural entities, which suffers a containment breach. We follow two employees who try to escape the chaos and calamity, Scarlet Jaunt and Jasmine Control. The building moves, the voices are cool, and theres creatures. Cool stuff!

I had an impulsive July! Some of these books are continuations that I more or less expected to read, but I sure did just grab some random books this month. Most of which pleasantly surprised me! A couple of which just simply surprised me...

A Marvellous Light

A Marvellous Light was probably my favourite book this month and it was one of my random impulses! I saw some fanart that intrigued me so I grabbed it from the library on a whim -- by now I have bought my own copy because it was just that well done. I am always a sucker for a well executed period adventure, especially when it can work in magical elements (I’m looking at you Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue) and this did everything I could possibly want from this sort of novel. It’s set in the Edwardian period and was such a perfect blend between action, tension and mystery, comedy, and romance; I was completely invested in both of the main characters the whole way through. Oh, and it felt like it fit in the time period, that the dialogue, narration, manners, stage dressing were all appropriate. There's nothing worse than a historical novel where the writing feels painfully modern.

The story starts out with baronet Robin Blythe who is having a no-good very bad day at work. He holds a civil servant position in the government and was just demoted to a shoddy little nothing position that he’s never even heard of by someone with a grudge against his parents. He quickly realizes how in over his head he is though when he finds out that the “special” part of “Special Liaison” actually means “magic”. Something that definitely doesn’t exist, except apparently it does, and now he has to navigate this strange new world with a very exasperated magical coworker, Edwin Courcey. His day only gets worse from there...

A Rover’s Story

A charming little novel told from the point of view of a fictionalized Mars rover. I admit I’m not a very science minded person, but from my inexpert opinion it seems quite well researched, with their Rover being heavily modelled after the previous rovers that were sent to Mars. I appreciated the author's note at the back that discussed some of the research that went into the novel, what was and wasn't accurate, and what was changed for the sake of narration.

It is a very neat journey that starts with Resilience still in pieces in a lab, as it gets to know the scientists around itself and what its eventual mission will be, and how its life goes from there. Though it can't communicate with the humans, it is able to communicate with all sorts of other electronics in the lab! The story is counterbalanced by the daughter of one of the scientists who writes to the rover as a sort of journal to deal with her mother so rarely being home. It was a quick read but very sweet.

American Girl: Meet Addy // Addy Learns A Lesson // Danger at the Zoo

I have continued to read the American Girl books after being pleasantly surprised by the Kit book I read last month (Kit Saves The Day). Their strongest point is definitely what strong historical fiction stories they are! At least from the ones I’ve read so far, the time period is never just a backdrop, the authors do take the time to ensure that the novel’s plot and problems are directly tied into what makes that point in time unique, and even as an adult I found myself learning interesting tidbits of information. The little “looking back” nonfiction section at the end of the books is especially neat! 

I really enjoyed both of the Addy books I read. These stories take place in 1864 during the Civil War. Addy’s family are slaves on a southern plantation, and the first book is about Addy’s escape from captivity with her mother, while the second book looks at the continued hardships and inequality that even free black people in the North suffered. They did a good job balancing the intended age bracket with the seriousness of the subject matter, and it didn’t feel like it shied away from making its point. 

The Kit Mystery book, Danger at the Zoo I was less impressed with, which disappointed me because I really enjoyed Kit Saves The Day. It wasn’t bad, per se, just rather middling. A fine read, but not dazzling. Maybe I had overinflated my expectations; given that it was a bigger book, I had hoped that it would up its game a bit, but it felt rather the opposite. It was a fine story, it dealt with historical details well, but it did a poor job creating the sort of tension I would want from a proper “mystery” novel. It often felt like we were treading water, where a quicker pace would have helped.

Doctor Who: Deep Time // Silhouette // Mission to Venus

My Doctor Who kick is still going strong. Relentless. Silhouette and Deep Time were both fine, basic examples of a decently written Doctor Who novel. Deep Time was rather forgettable... the side characters never really succeeded in interesting me, and it often felt like it suffered from pacing issues. It was about the Doctor and Clara on a doomed space mission that gets stranded in deep space, but I enjoyed listening to it in the background while I was doing other stuff. 

Silhouette was actually pretty great, probably because I’m a total sucker for the Paternoster Gang. It was a fun mystery set in a ~mysterious carnival~ during a frost fair on the Thames. It had the characters splitting up and exploring different avenues to solve a set of murders. Lots of good Vastra and Jenny stuff, and Strax was absolutely hilarious, he stole the show every time he was featured. Love him. The whole thing was a pretty solid plot, pretty funny, and I thought both The Doctor and Clara got pretty decent characterization throughout. Would recommend this one if you want a solid Doctor Who read.

The last one, Mission to Venus, was hands down the funniest though, albeit unintentionally. Did you know there were really trashy Doctor Who Choose Your Own Adventure books written in the 80s? I didn’t, but I do now and obviously I had to get my hands on one. It is Exceptionally Bad but in the funniest possible way. I had a blast reading through this and I really don’t know what to say about it besides look at the cover. Look at it. Amazing. The Doctor, Peri (and You!) wind up on a spaceship that is trying to transfer dangerous by highly nutritional plants to a stricken colony, but is very soon imperiled.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation v4

I creep every closer to finishing the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation series! Not much I can say about it that I haven’t said about the others that wouldn’t enter outright spoiler territory, so I’ll just say that this was another great volume. Some of them have felt overly bogged down by some of their flashbacks (like the entire back half of volume 2 and the endless Yi City arc. I'm not saying it wasn't interesting but my god this was a Victor Hugo level diversion) but this one went at a great pace and it’s nice to feel like we’re actually making progress in the main plot even if, romantically speaking, WWX and LWJ continue to be two of the dumbest human beings alive. Bless this slow burn, I’m gonna kill them both. Also enjoyed the side characters we got in this book — I loved how great the Juniors were, loved my dear, cranky, miserable Jiang Cheng, loved Wen Ning Doing His Best. Great book. I’m dragging my feet about reading the fifth book because I don’t want this to end.

Love Beyond Body Space & Time: An Indigenous LGBT Sci-Fi Anthology

A really neat anthology of short stories written by Canadian Indigenous authors that are all focused on queer sci-fi stories. It’s way too easy to box Indigenous stories into the singular genres of “historical” or “contemporary” so it was great having an entire book devoted to various Indigenous perspectives on science fiction. Like any anthology there were some weak stories and some phenomenally good stories. I picked this one up specifically because Cherie Dimaline (author of The Marrow Thieves) wrote for it, and she did not disappoint, but all the stories were so different and so interesting that I can’t recommend it enough.

Short story collections like this are especially good for people without a lot of time or who are trying to revitalize their reading attention span imo because it gives you fully formed, bite-sized stories that put a lot of care and detail into their telling.

Nimona

Obviously I had to finally read Nimona. It’s been on my TBR for ages, and, like absolutely everyone else I think, I figured I had better read it now that the movie is out. I enjoyed both the comic and the film very much! It was interesting to see two slightly different takes on the same narrative, and I think both expressed the point they were trying to make very well. I honestly couldn't say which version I enjoyed more. I doubt I have anything to say that someone else hasn’t said much, much better, so I'll leave it with that.

Torchwood: Skypoint

One of the better Torchwood books I’ve read so far, I think! It had some pretty solid characterization tbh. The story wasn’t anything mind blowing, but a survival adventure in a high tech apartment was a fun setting, and I am literally never going to say not to a fake marriage plot line 👀 so a story about Owen and Tosh going undercover as a newly-wed couple in a sinister apartment building that might be eating its residents was just plain old fun.  It also delivered me some truly delicious Tosh/Owen angst. Mwah. It was all around a pretty darn good Owen book, which he deserved after being slandered so badly in Something in the Water. Though I was a little disappointed by how Tosh was handled — I kept expecting her to have a bigger role than she really got by the end.

…I have no words. I bought this one on a whim because the description on the back made me laugh:

Every night, 16-year-old Kureha has a strange dream involving lilies, storms, and... her classmate Ginko as a bear?! At school, Kureha's unassuming personality and looks render her practically invisible. Sometimes, it feels like no one notices her at all... until cute and energetic Ginko asks Kureha to talk privately one day during lunch. Maybe she really is a bear... or maybe she's just got a crush on Kureha!

but frankly there were too few bears. I thought I was getting a bear-themed magical girl book with lesbians. I have no idea what I actually got. You can tell there’s some sort of metaphor at work here — and I’ve got an Honours Degree in English Literature, dragging bullshit metaphors out of the text kicking and screaming is like my whole thing — but I’ll be damned if I could actually tell you what it is. It’s either wildly inconsistent and deranged, or genius. Or maybe there's no metaphor at all and the authors just really wanted to draw bear ears and panty-shots *shrug* I cannot emphasize enough how little sense this book made. Every time I thought I maybe had a handle on things it got progressively more inscrutable, it was actually rather impressive.

May get the second book, we’ll see how weak my resolve is not to waste my money.

I do! I really like the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells- 9 times out of 10 the art I reblog is fanart of that series.

It’s about a security android that goes rogue and escapes the company that owned it with the help of the first humans to ever treat it like a person. Then it goes on adventures throughout space helping people and figuring out what to do now. It’s a very fun series with enough action to keep me engaged + an overarching story with so many cool concepts that have spawned a very imaginative fanbase lol

My favorite book of that series is Fugitive Telemetry, which is a murder mystery that highlights a lot of bot culture (one of my favorite parts of the series)

A piece of fanart for a PMD Fic I've recently caught up with and have become completely smitten for: PMD: NOBLE DUNGEONEERS ( https://archiveofourown.org/works/47233672/chapters/119012749 )

The main character, Ennea Harmonie is an estranged noble girl whose family has all but abandoned her to 'running' a town whose council seems to resent her more than anything.

But what gets me most about her is the way she escapes her mundane horror simply by...imagining something better. Just shutting herself in her home to lucid dream of being an adventurer, or having lots of friends, or being somewhere prettier, or just...anywhere but where she is now. This aspect of Ennea's coping is something I love seeing and hits close to home.

Then on top of that the story is a REALLY GOOD MYSTERY. Trust me you're gunna LOVE IT.

A totally normal camping story

We all know the thrilling feeling of a well-told creepy story around a fire. But these are just stories... right? A group of teenagers decides to camp in the woods near the sea. They dare each other to go into the woods and do other silly tasks. It's just fun, nothing more. Until... peace shatters when they hear an eerie melody from deep within the forest. Something unnatural lurks in the woods. Strange events and disappearances ensue, with no chance for escape until they find the reason for the disappearances... or something more.

I've thought about an "Infinity Train AU" because there's literally a daycare car on the train already, and the boys would fit so well in this universe! They could help children (and adults too) get their numbers down to 0 and have so much FUN Yn could be a passenger, and Moon's "virus" might be the result of Amelia tampering with them... (a weird attempt to replace One-One).

Legacy of Evil: In a world where you're born with a power passed down from another through your soul, those with predecessors deemed morally corrupt are shunned and live on the outskirts of society. Jaylyn Ignatius, a teenager who sometimes goes by the name Iggy, is one of 5 special children put through a training program to 'correct' them and make them strong fighters. LoE follows him as he finally escapes this program and navigates his way through a changed city, meeting friends, searching for his parents, and hiding from the government organisation that hates his fucking guts. It's got magyk! It's got changelings! It's got a really weird floating city! It's got arson! It's got a definitely-not-weird-not-immortal-cat!

Déjà Vu: A video game in which 2% of the population is cursed with mutations—odd things about them that make them capable of inhuman acts. Powers. Society views these people as dangerous and in need of being controlled, so when a new school opens up with the supposed goal of aiding students with mutations, and giving them opportunities for their futures, many shun it, but many students are enrolled too, either by parents who want to get rid of their children via boarding school, or by well-meaning parents. You play as Epic, a 15 year old student at this school who woke up on the 14th of March with little memory of who they are and what their mutation is. After finding yourself in detention because you didn't make it to class, you meet Marcus, Mikey, and Marcie. With your newfound friends, you slowly uncover secrets about the school, and a hidden plot. It's got time loops! It's got 4th wall breaking game mechanics! It's about the way you'd do absolutely anything for your friends! It's about perfectionism and burnout!

I Dream of the Distance: Ridley Callis is an 11 year old with 6 siblings who feels a disconnect from every single one. Their obsession with stories and fairytales started with their father, whom was the light in their dark. When he disappears under mysterious circumstances and leaves them lonely, Ridley takes their stories and daydreams and sets out into the world to hunt down their dad. ...Not without attracting the attention of their older brother, Farren, of course, who wanted to come along to keep them safe. Along the way, they find magic, a magician, and find out things about themselves that were perhaps left best uncovered. I'm not going to lie this was an escapist fantasy story inspired by minecraft.

I am a writer of sci-fi mystery and adventure, diagnosed with autism. The diagnosis came as an adult so I didn’t receive much support in school, often instead going for walks or spending time in the library reading about physics, history, psychology, and philosophy (and I'm good at tests so actually did pretty well in terms of grades).

Sci-fi, fantasy, and the paranormal are the interests I always return to. Inspirations include The X-Files, Doctor Who, Scooby Doo, Star Trek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and more.

•Basically any horror, (murder) mystery, death/killing game, adventure, multi-ending or/and choice based you can think of! I started off with Undertale, Fnaf and Ddlc, fell into Ace Attorney, got abducted by Danganronpa and then dragged off to the place of no return from there. I was literally afraid of most of these games at first, but they got me stepping out of my comfort zone and discover what kinda media Iike. Now I'm stuck here. It's great tho XD

•Favourite characters for me range usually range from morally grey/complicated to downright irreemably evil to entertaining to sweet innocent cinnamon roll that has done nothing wrong. Most times it's the morally grey characters that are good people but do bad things not because they want to, but because they have to. Or when they've been beaten down and traumatised before and puts on an act and bares their worst to never be hurt or have to relive it all again. Or when they do bad things for good reasons and vis virsa! Or all of the above. An antagonist that could've been the protagonist in a different setting. Someone relatable yet troubled whose actions you can recognise as bad but then wonder what you would've done if you were in their shoes. When they die they get me the most, I won't lie. Other morally grey characters for me are the ones who are shady, sketchy, sleazy. Those who act all friendly and smile easily but you can tell that there's something sinister and off behind the facade, but you can't place your finger on what. They do shady things behind your back or in plain sight and you don't even realise until you look back on it. If not them, then there's no predicting on who it would be. They have to suffer a lot tho. If they're not doomed by the narrative how am I supposed to cry over them and regret ever getting attached and then cling to every fanart/fanfiction of them I can find (characters I mentioned I'm looking at you--)?

•No consistency to find here. At all. I love, love dark, unhealthy dynamics between characters that draw me into their orbit but then there's also the healing, tender relationships that make my heart melt. The ones where love didn't fix or change anything, but was still there. Then foils and enemies to lovers, that constant push and pull and mutual rivalry bordering on hate while there exists that romantic undertone underneath it all, waiting to see who'll be first to act on it. The developing ones, the 'not quite there yets'. And last but not least the 'will they won't they' where you wish they never will. As you can see, my taste in ships is all over the place but these are definitely my favourite ship formats!

Anyway, I love Danganronpa another and the Kisaragi Foundation trio so your blog is an absolute treasure to me ^-^ Thanks for the ask and the opportunity to ramble!

garm’s video game wrap-up 2021

i started this last year (garm’s video game wrap-up 2020), just as a way to do some doodle fanart at least for the games i enjoyed throughout the year!!

through my life i’ve been mostly a portable console player, but thanks to being stuck at home these days i’ve been able to play some of my console/pc backlog. i’m glad!!

as with the previous year, these are just some short (spoiler-free!) thoughts on the games that got me through 2021.

- trails into reverie: technically started last year. super glad to revisit the crossbell gang! and i love the kind of 'sky 3rd' formula. and tbh it's still pretty amazing to see all the chars get together..if i had to choose a most "fun" trails this would probably be the one🤔

- persona 5 royal: i love persona games so it took me long enough to get to p5 😅 i love it!! the presentation is so well-polished, and i got really attached to the phantom thieves as characters..probably my 2nd fave persona game now after p2ep~

- 13 sentinels aegis rim: i think nothing needs to be said, it took over my brain and still hasn’t let go..... the visuals/music are sooo good, i love the characters so much, the story is crazy in the good way. and met some cool people through 13s too so thank you for my life!!

- ai the somnium files: another crazy game that twisted my brain around, i had a blast with zero escape trilogy and aitsf was no different! what a ride!! and i always love these mystery-solving puzzle room things. i need time to regrow my braincells for nirvana initiative...

- stellaris: my first time playing a 4x game (i am so bad at it), i wish i had more timeeee to play it but i enjoy seeing your little aliens expand out into the universe! and the space vibes(?) music is SO good as relaxing/work bgm..faster than light🎵

- ys viii: finally! i think ys8 is a lot of people’s fave ys game so i was excited to get to it? i can see why, the music is amazing, the island exploration is so fun, and...dana 😭😭  ys9 is still my personal fave but this was such a fun adventure i loved it!

- great ace attorney 1+2: i had just started (finally) playing it on 3ds when they announced the localisation T_T anyway i love all the ace attorney games so far and gaa is no different!! gaa2 especially kept me on edge the whole time (still can't top aai2 for me though 😆) 

- mass effect 1: after 1000 years of rotting in my steam library!! i think i was always scared off because shooting game, but i'm so glad i finally got myself to play it. baby's first western rpg..i LOVE space+alien+worldbuilding stuff and this game is everything i ever wanted...

- fuga melodies of steel: another group of kids to adopt and protect 😭😭 i'm so happy it's out, it was worth the wait and it's such a fun little game..i looove the aesthetics and music (i did with solatorobo too) and i really enjoy the gameplay loop this time!!

- a short hike: what a short and sweet game!! i'd love to play more relaxing exploration games like this where you just talk to npcs, do fun stuff without worrying about dying or resource management haha. amazing style and music, i love it ;w;

- night in the woods: a very relatable story to the ‘depressed 20yo dropout’ phase of my life 😂 sometimes we’re always lost but it feels a bit better to be lost with friends. the mood set by the wonderful music and aesthetics is absolutely amazing O: and the dialogue!! love it.

- detention: baby's first(?) horror game😭 i have no reflexes so admittedly those parts are hell, but that aside the aesthetic/sound make a truly amazing atmosphere i really love!! it's set before my time but even then the settings evoke a lot of nostalgia for me;;

- mass effect 2: cries i love this little alien(+some humans) gang...i missed being able to converse with your squadmates anywhere, but i LOVE the loyalty missions and how they flesh out each character, i feel extra attached to this gang. i'll miss exploring the galaxy with them!

- kuro no kiseki: still on chapter 1, but looks like 2021 was a 'start with trails, end with trails' year 😄 i'm rooting for van and friends' gourmet adventures🥞finally i'm done with my 2021 wrap-up, can't wait for new adventures in 2022!!

Guys! I am so stoked! I went on an adventure today, and decided to swing by Escape Velocity Comics on my way back home. Now, I haven’t been to a comic shop since August, and am behind on my usual pickups. I saw an issue of #RedRoom by Ed Piskor, and it was the ONLY issue left on the stands. I believe this issue 3 came out in July, and I haven’t had a chance to grab it yet. So I picked it up and flipped through, and whattaya know!? My man Eddie P ran my pinup sketch of Mistress Pentagram in the back, amongst a slew of kickass pinups by various artists!! How fucking cool is that!?
