🦇 A Pretty Implausible Premise Book Review 🦇
❝ “I think ghosts exist because we’re not ready to stop loving the people who died, and that kind of love doesn’t have a form to take, so it takes the shape of the person who was lost.” ❞
⚠️ Content Warnings: Abandonment, Car Accident, Child Death/Death, Chronic Illness, Grief
❓ #QOTD What memory do you associate with your favorite taste? ❓ 🦇 Hattie and Presley are both haunted by ghosts. For Hattie, it's the young swimmer she couldn't save from drowning. For Presley, it's his twin brother; the one everyone seemed to love more. Between sharing grief, ghosts, and lost Olympic dreams, Hattie and Presley have more in common than they realize, leading to an instant connection that almost seems as implausible as love. When the ghosts of their pasts become too much, can they work through their trauma together, or will it tear them apart?
[ Find my review below or on Insta | Storygraph | Goodreads ]
💜 Karen Rivers does a stunning job of slipping us into the minds of two grieving, traumatized teens who have turned those traumas into their form of normalcy. This is a story that, months into the future, I know will linger in my mind the way many books about grief do. Despite the heavy themes, however, the book is never really emotional in a way that causes us to grieve alongside the MCs. The lyrical, head-spinning prose forces readers to feel the weight of what Hattie and Presley feel, but many of these moments are fragmented. The story covers beautiful lessons like healing and forgiveness; feelings that are as messy as our MCs' minds.
🦇 Unfortunately, it's not until 45% of the way into this book that Hattie and Presley have any real interaction with one another. The book focuses on their individual traumas long before we see how their ghosts bring them together. Unfortunately, there's no real action in this book until readers are halfway through. The writer also relies on a long-winded, run-on sentence structure that, while reflective of how thoughts spiral in our heads, can become dizzying to read on the page. I've bit my tongue about this for a VERY long time, but I'm done. Too many books I've read, especially in the past year, rely on Taylor Swift references to get you to love the MC. Try anything else to make an MC relatable (because for many of us, it's not). Literally, anything else. (*Watches my follower count drop and doesn't care.*) There is so much to love about Hattie and Presley (who are beautifully weird in their own ways), that gets lost to thought spirals and references. There are also segments from the book Hattie is obsessed with (reading it helps ease her anxiety), that show us Hattie is living more in the book than she is in her own life. Those segments don't really add to the story until the end, though, and therefore steal too much space on the page. As a result, a lot of the character development felt rushed and unnatural.
🦇 Recommended for Fans of I'll Give You the Sun or The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson (which still weigh heavy on my heart), The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R Pan, or All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven.
✨ The Vibes ✨ 🐋 Lots of Taylor Swift References 🦈 Unique, Winding Prose ⛸️ Young Adult Romance 🔥 Processing Grief/Trauma 📚 Book Within a Book
🦇 Major thanks to the author @karenrivers and publisher @algonquinyr for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley. 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book. #APrettyImplausiblePremise

Shadow kitty sitting on a pretty book. 🐈 #Windowphotoshoot for Beatrice Likes the Dark. Written by @apriltucholke, illustrated by @khoa.le.artwork, and published by @algonquinyr. This book is STUNNING, both the pictures and the beautiful story of two sisters who couldn’t be more different but still find ways to appreciate one another. I will always be a fan of April Tucholke and her emotive, moving prose and enchanting storytelling, whether in #picturebook form or novel.

Because spooky season is for everyone, let me introduce you to The Myrtle Hardcastle Series by Elizabeth Bunce. Thanks to @algonquinyr for the gifted copies. QITD: What's your favorite childhood series? If you grew up devouring cozy mystery series, then consider adding this Edgar award winning series to your spooky TBR. Part 4, In Myrtle Peril is out now and you're in for a story featuring: 🔍 a long lost heiress or con artist 🔍 a murder mystery at a hospital 🔍 a vanished murder victim 🔍 Victorian Era criminology 🔍 a ghost ship & fortune hunting 🔍 SYNOPSIS 🔍 Myrtle Hardcastle—twelve-year-old Victorian Amateur Detective—returns to investigate the case of a missing heiress lost at sea, an inquiry that runs aground when a murder in plain sight has no apparent victim. When a mysterious girl attempts to stake her claim to the Snowcroft family fortune, Myrtle Hardcastle’s father, a lawyer, is asked to help prove—or disprove—the girl’s identity. Is this truly Ethel Snowcroft, believed to be lost at sea with her parents, or a con artist chasing a windfall? Mr. Hardcastle’s pursuit of the case takes a detour when he’s hospitalized for a tonsillectomy—only to witness a murder. Or does he? With no body at the scene, Myrtle and her governess, Miss Judson, fear the so-called murder was a feverish delusion—until a critical piece of evidence appears. But where’s the victim? And who at the hospital could be harboring murderous intent? Myrtle is determined to find out before the killer comes after her father. With stakes this high, her sleuthing has put Myrtle, her family, and the patients and staff at the Royal Swinburne Hospital In Myrtle Peril. #InMyrtlePeril #ElizabethCBunce #MyrtleHardcastleSeries #bookish #cozymystery #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #middlegradebooks #murdermystery #IGReads #reading #spookyseason #spookybooks #tbr #EdgarAward #readersofinstagram #garden #flowers #booklover #read #bookcommunity #bookworm #book (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjvUBEMLA-l/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

✨Blog Tour✨: How Do You Live? By Genzaburō Yoshino translated by Bruno Navasky First published in 1937, Genzaburō Yoshino’s How Do You Live? has long been acknowledged in Japan as a crossover classic for young readers.   How Do You Live? is narrated in two voices. The first belongs to Copper, fifteen, who after the death of his father must confront inevitable and enormous change, including his own betrayal of his best friend. In between episodes of Copper’s emerging story, his uncle writes to him in a journal, sharing knowledge and offering advice on life’s big questions as Copper begins to encounter them. This first-ever English-language translation of a Japanese classic about finding one’s place in a world both infinitely large and unimaginably small is perfect for readers of philosophical fiction like The Alchemist and The Little Prince, as well as Miyazaki fans eager to understand one of his most important influences. I’m halfway done with this book and I’m completely infatuated with this story! It is simply divine and full of wisdom for young people to grasp ahold of and live life with completeness. The advice given is wholesome, and it shares how young people should grab life and their mistakes and just explore to the best of their ability in a way that pushes them to be their best no matter what. We are all going to mess up in life, but what you do with those mistakes are what makes you. This book is a great read for serious readers and serious minds who want to level up by pushing boundaries and exploring what the world has to offer. Highly recommend!! Thank you to the publisher Algonquin Young Readers (@algonquinyr) for this book in exchange for an honest and fair review. #howdoyoulive #genzaburoyoshino #brunonavasky #algonquinyr #blogtour https://www.instagram.com/p/CVoXBiNvj5j/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy April 1st! I am all about new months and fresh starts. I am definitely dealing with a lot of anxiety right now, but reading has been a major help. . 🐯 . TIGERS, NOT DAUGHTERS by Samantha Mabry just released last week, and this advanced readers copy is so gorgeous! The book is wrapped in a special removable cover that has a small bio of each main character. Such a neat idea! I’ve never gotten an #arc like this before. . 🐯 . Thank you to @algonquinyr for sending me this amazing #bookmail ❤️ . 🐯 . The Torres sisters dream of escape. Escape from their needy and despotic widowed father, and from their San Antonio neighborhood, full of old San Antonio families and all the traditions and expectations that go along with them. In the summer after her senior year of high school, Ana, the oldest sister, falls to her death from her bedroom window. A year later, her three younger sisters, Jessica, Iridian, and Rosa, are still consumed by grief and haunted by their sister’s memory. Their dream of leaving Southtown now seems out of reach. But then strange things start happening around the house: mysterious laughter, mysterious shadows, mysterious writing on the walls. The sisters begin to wonder if Ana really is haunting them, trying to send them a message—and what exactly she’s trying to say. . 🐯 . #tigersnotdaughters #samanthamabry #notthetigerking #algonquinyr #jennblogsbooks #winewednesday #humpday #saferathome2020 #yabooks #magicalrealism #bookflatlay #booktography #booksbooksbooks #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B-dP622FP4w/?igshid=ejbd7xqmcwfr

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ What are you reading today? ♥ • • I just finished an excellent book about friendships, family, and being proud of where you come from. How to Build a Heart by @mariapadian from @algonquinyr is an #ownvoices #comingofage story coming in January that follows Izzy as her family goes through the process of building a Habitat for Humanity home while she navigates friendships old and new, and as she learns what it means to be a family. If you enjoy YA, then you’ll want to be sure and add this one to your list. • • I injured my leg on Monday. I have spent the whole week at home but unable to move very much. I have a few saved photos from previous photo days so I’ll just have to make those work until I can get my body functioning properly again. • • #yalit #yareads #howtobuildaheart #mariapadian #algonquin #algonguinbooks #algonquinyr #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramming #booknanigans #allidoisread #readreadread #readnomatterwhat #ficwishes https://www.instagram.com/p/B6TSrLRAvB8/?igshid=mbhuubb9qqbk

The JACKABY series by William Ritter is very popular in this middle school. I think it’s the combination of a historical setting along with a mystery that makes 7th and 8th graders love it. - 📚. Now I have one more series to add to my poor, groaning TBR. - 📚. 📚. 📚. #bookstagram #librarybooks #middleschoollibrary #jackaby #williamritter #algonquinyr #yabooks #yamystery #youngadultbooks #booktuber #bookreviewer #algonquinbooks https://www.instagram.com/sophieriggsby/p/Bs_C7eyH0Gs/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1b35402sg4dsa

It’s finally summer! ✨ This teacher is done with school for the 20-21 school year and wow, it was such a wild ride! My students this year were so resilient and awesome and I’m going to miss them so much. Now, it’s time for beach days, a few fun trips, and soaking up a much needed break before starting again in the fall! Oh, and plenty of reading! First book of the summer is going to be this ARC of Up All Night edited by Laura Silverman courtesy of @algonquinyr. I can’t wait to start reading these stories. 🌅 [ID: my right hand holds up an ARC copy of Up All Night in front of a tapestry with a print of peach colored books and pages arranged to look like waves] https://www.instagram.com/p/CQMxO1Nrx2s/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Where there is war, there are monsters. They are drawn to the violence, seduced by the evil on display in humans. And when monsters slip into a place, they never go away." Thanks to @algonquinyr for the gifted copy. Our Shadows Have Claws was the perfect way to start of spooky season with a Latinx twist. I loved the range of authors and diverse storytelling. I enjoyed the social commentary sprinkled into the storytelling that complemented the horror. It was interesting to learn about the different monsters and folklore and the ways that some of the authors retold some of my childhood favorites was very creative. The standouts for me were: 🧟‍♂️ Sugary Deaths by Lilliam Rivera because I have always been fascinated with gargoyle stories. 🧟‍♂️ Beware the Empty Subway Car by Maika and Maritza Moulite introduced me to lougarou. 🧟‍♂️ Dismembered by Ann Davila Cardinal felt like a story from home. 🧟‍♂️ The Boy From Hell by Amparo Ortiz was a favorite. I love the way Amparo's mind works. I appreciated that the authors didn't shy away from intersectionality in representation and celebrated their rich cultures. I took away something new from each story in this anthology. This collection has a little bit of everything and appeals to all levels of spooky readers. If you love magic and mystery and you're looking for a solid latinx horror collection, then be sure to add this one to your TBR. I would love to this one become a series featuring more Latinx voices in the future. This is October's pick for @haylibrosenlacasa so it's not too late to join them in the discussion. #OurShadowsHaveClaws #horror #AmparoOrtiz #YamileSaiedMendez #bookrecommendation #bookreview #bookstagrammer #bookcommunity #bookphotos #latinxbookstagram #latinxbooks #latinxhorror #reading #monsters #folklore #booklover #tbr #readers of Instagram #anthology #BIPOCBookstagram #spookyseason #booklover #magic #diversehorror (at The Bushwick Collective) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjokil2L1_0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
