Hey I’m like binging 3b1p and LOVING it and this is super unimportant but since I live in Rochester (which is why I’m keeping anonymous lol) and point at the screen when they’re mentioned in rose/royals backstory, there IS a known Italian crime family but it didn’t start till the 50s. It split from Buffalo. Anyway thanks for listening to my Roc City info moment
my favorite thing about living in the northeast is the complete nonzero chance that any old new york italians you know have some nebulous link to the mafia/a crime family—shannon

Queer Books Challenged in Florida Schools and Libraries
There are some affiliate links below in case you want to support MQH.
Gender Queer: A Memoir, Maia Kobabe: Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia's intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears.
The Color Purple, Alice Walker: Separated as girls, sisters Celie and Nettie sustain their loyalty to and hope in each other across time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning nearly thirty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The Color Purple broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, narrating the lives of women through their pain and struggle, companionship and growth, resilience and bravery.
Julián Is a Mermaid, Jessica Love: While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself? Mesmerizing and full of heart, Jessica Love's author-illustrator debut is a jubilant picture of self-love and a radiant celebration of individuality.
Drama: A Graphic Novel, Raina Telgemeier: Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school's production of Moon over Mississippi, she can't really sing. Instead she's the set designer for the drama department's stage crew, and this year she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen. And when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier!
Cemetery Boys, Aiden Thomas: Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can't get rid of him. When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free. However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.
I Am Billie Jean King, Brad Meltzer: This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America's icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This volume features Billie Jean King, the world champion tennis player who fought successfully for women's rights. From a young age, Billie Jean King loved sports--especially tennis! But as she got older, she realized that plenty of people, even respected male athletes, didn't take women athletes seriously. She set to prove them wrong and show girls everywhere that sports are for everyone, regardless of gender.
This One Summer, Mariko Tamaki: Every summer, Rose goes with her mom and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It's their getaway, their refuge. Rosie's friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. One of the local teens - just a couple of years older than Rose and Windy - is caught up in something bad... Something life threatening. It's a summer of secrets, and sorrow, and growing up, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other.
Marriage of a Thousand Lies, Sj Sindu: Lucky and her husband, Krishna, are gay. They present an illusion of marital bliss to their conservative Sri Lankan-American families, while each dates on the side. It's not ideal, but for Lucky, it seems to be working. She goes out dancing, she drinks a bit, she makes ends meet by doing digital art on commission. But when Lucky's grandmother has a nasty fall, Lucky returns to her childhood home and unexpectedly reconnects with her former best friend and first lover, Nisha, who is preparing for her own arranged wedding with a man she's never met.
And Tango Makes Three, Peter Parnell: At the penguin house at the Central Park Zoo, two penguins named Roy and Silo were a little bit different from the others. But their desire for a family was the same. And with the help of a kindly zookeeper, Roy and Silo got the chance to welcome a baby penguin of their very own.
More Happy Than Not, Adam Silvera: In the months following his father's suicide, sixteen-year-old Aaron Soto can't seem to find happiness again, despite the support of his girlfriend, Genevieve, and his overworked mom. Grief and the smile-shaped scar on his wrist won't let him forget the pain. But when Aaron meets Thomas, a new kid in the neighborhood, something starts to shift inside him. Aaron can't deny his unexpected feelings for Thomas despite the tensions their friendship has created with Genevieve and his tight-knit crew. Since Aaron can't stay away from Thomas or turn off his newfound happiness, he considers taking drastic actions. The Leteo Institute's revolutionary memory-altering procedure will straighten him out, even if it means forgetting who he truly is.
Melissa, Alex Gino: When people look at Melissa, they think they see a boy named George. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl.
Melissa thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. Melissa really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part... because she's a boy.
With the help of her best friend, Kelly, Melissa comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte -- but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.
A Quick & Easy Guide to Queer & Trans Identities, Mady G, Jules Zuckerberg: In this quick and easy guide to queer and trans identities, cartoonists Mady G and Jules Zuckerberg guide you through the basics of the LGBT+ world! Covering essential topics like sexuality, gender identity, coming out, and navigating relationships, this guide explains the spectrum of human experience through informative comics, interviews, worksheets, and imaginative examples. This Book Is Gay, Juno Dawson: This candid, funny, and uncensored exploration of sexuality and what it's like to grow up LGBTQ also includes real stories from people across the gender and sexual spectrums, not to mention hilarious illustrations.
Little & Lion, Brandy Colbert: When Suzette comes home to Los Angeles from her boarding school in New England, she's isn't sure if she'll ever want to go back. L.A. is where her friends and family are (as well as her crush, Emil). And her stepbrother, Lionel, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, needs her emotional support. But as she settles into her old life, Suzette finds herself falling for someone new...the same girl her brother is in love with. When Lionel's disorder spirals out of control, Suzette is forced to confront her past mistakes and find a way to help her brother before he hurts himself--or worse.
King and the Dragonflies, Kacen Callender: Twelve-year-old Kingston James is sure his brother Khalid has turned into a dragonfly. When Khalid unexpectedly passed away, he shed what was his first skin for another to live down by the bayou in their small Louisiana town. Khalid still visits in dreams, and King must keep these secrets to himself as he watches grief transform his family.
It would be easier if King could talk with his best friend, Sandy Sanders. But just days before he died, Khalid told King to end their friendship, after overhearing a secret about Sandy-that he thinks he might be gay. "You don't want anyone to think you're gay too, do you?"
Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My Place: A Transgender Memoir, Jackson Bird: An unflinching and endearing memoir from LGBTQ+ advocate Jackson Bird about how he finally sorted things out and came out as a transgender man. When Jackson Bird was twenty-five, he came out as transgender to his friends, family, and anyone in the world with an internet connection. Assigned female at birth and raised as a girl, he often wondered if he should have been born a boy. Jackson didn't share this thought with anyone because he didn't think he could share it with anyone.
The Black Flamingo, Dean Atta: Michael is a mixed-race gay teen growing up in London. All his life, he's navigated what it means to be Greek-Cypriot and Jamaican--but never quite feeling Greek or Black enough.
As he gets older, Michael's coming out is only the start of learning who he is and where he fits in. When he discovers the Drag Society, he finally finds where he belongs--and the Black Flamingo is born

Tagging my moots that I like to see their opinions for this (as well as the ones I tagged within the list as well):

It’s Gilly that carries you upstairs into the bedroom you’ve been allocated, Coco follows closely behind snapping on a pair of surgical gloves he’s snagged from Hank’s first aid kit. Bishop waits until the door closes before he turns his attention to Riz, who is perched on a barstool having glass pulled out of his face and scalp by Hank. Bishop surveys the collection, each jagged and blood-stained piece sits in a white ramekin, reflecting the light from above.
“What the fuck happened?” Bishop asks him, his voice dangerously low. “She isn’t even meant to be in the fucking area.”
Riz tilts his head towards Bishop, wincing as Hank pulls another piece of glass out of fleshy part of his neck.
“I was at the community centre finishing up some of the intake paperwork for the mentor program we’ve been working on.” Riz tells him, his eyes flicking up to meet Bishop’s. “Carmen popped her head in, said she’d gotten a call form one of her contacts telling her someone was coming over the wall tonight. They gave her a very specific set of coordinates. They told her it was a girl they thought had been trafficked, that she wouldn’t trust men…”
“You think they were trying to get her to come alone?” Hank asks, his palm guiding Riz’s head to the side so he can get a better look at the wound in his scalp.
“Yea.” Riz says frankly. “I think Carmen did too, which is why she asked me to go with her. We decided to take my truck just in case someone was on the lookout for her vehicle.”
“Why even go in the first place if she suspected it was a trap?” Taza asks picking up a set of glasses from the bar and a bottle of Vicki’s top shelf whiskey.
Bishop knows why. You couldn’t take the risk that there was someone out here that needed help. He thinks the caller knew exactly what they were doing when they used the term trafficked to lure you to the wall.
“Carmen’s sister…” Bishop trails off, shaking his head. “She can’t help herself when it comes to something like this.”
He doesn’t need to say anymore, he can see they all get it.
“I called Rosa and Nestor, told them to meet us at the crossing point.” Riz continues his story. “I figured it was better to have some back up just in case. We were five minutes away when the first shot came through the windshield, that’s what all the glass is from.” He says gesturing at himself. “The first bullet hit Carmen; the rest are in the seat because she managed to get low after that. They tried to block us in, cut off our escape route but Rosa and Nestor intervened. They managed to take down a few of their guys before they disappeared into the darkness. The two of them are hunting them as we speak.”
It gives Bishop a level of comfort to hear that. El Cuchillo and their braided prospect are a deadly combination, he knows that before the night is over they’ll be seeing even more bloodshed.
“You recognise any of them?” Taza asks as Bishop’s phone bleeps signalling a message. He removes it from his pocket, studying the details of the screen intently.
“Dennis Reed, Alice’s son.” Riz says knowingly. “I saw him, he saw me. There’s no way he would do something like this if he wasn’t acting on her orders.”
He picks up the glass of whiskey that Taza has poured before looking meeting Bishop’s eyes.
“They’re gonna be expecting retaliation. I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided on a pre-emptive strike, I think we need to get the girls out of here and through the tunnel, take stock of the weapons we have on hand…”
“There’s no need.” Bishop cuts him off with the swipe of his hand before tilting his phone towards the group. It’s a video from Nestor, a grainy one of an inferno, flames licking up towards the night sky, tearing through a large farmhouse. It’s the Reed residence, and the HQ of Santo Padre’s very own white pride militia, the Reed Coalition.
“Fuck.” Taza says before taking a sip of his whisky. “I see retirement hasn’t diminished Rosa’s skill set.”
“Carmen’s her friend.” Hank says distractedly as he applies a butterfly stitch to the wound across Riz’s cheek. “They’re lucky Nestor has mellowed her out over the past couple of years otherwise she’d have burned them all alive.”
It’s true, each of them know it. The young girl they’d watched grow up had become the thing of nightmares after what happened to her overseas. The name El Cuchillo still instils fear to this very day.  There were rumours that she’d died up in Reno, but the reality was Rosa had retired, settling down in Santo Padre with her lover.
Instead of taking lives, she was helping people coming over the wall, leveraging her contacts to guide them towards a better future. You had played a big part in that, helping Rosa to overcome her own demons and use her skillset into a tool for good. Bishop knew how much Rosa valued that, how she’d come to think of you as one of her closest friends. He knows the other woman is hurting as much as he is, that she’s taken care of a problem that has needed solving for a very long time.
“I need to see Carmen.” Bishop tells the others, his hand coming to rest on Taza’s shoulder. “Hold down the fort for me while I’m gone.”

Sitting across a bar, staring right at her prey
Mike had noticed you looking at him for the past 10 minutes from where you sat at your side of the bar.
"Another beer for you sir." The bartender said, setting another glass of his almost empty beer in front of him.
"I didn't--," Mike started, but the bartender shook his head.
"She did." He said and nodded towards you.
When Mike looked at you again you tipped your head slightly and raised your glass up. From the dim lights in the bar, he could almost make out the lust in your eyes as you smirked.
Maybe after being with Alice for so long, he still got it?
Getting out of his chair he grabbed his drink and moved to you. "Anyone sitting there ma'am?"
"Hopefully you will." Your voice was laced with lust, and he sat down, moving close.
He was embarrassed to say that he was willfully out of practice when it came to flirting. It had been so easygoing when he was with Alice. But now...he had no idea what he was doing.
"Just relax, sir. I won't bite...hard."

Lucien Victor Alexis (1887-1981)
Not very much is known of Lucien Alexis’ early childhood in New Orleans, but what is known are the achievements he would make in later years to come. Born on July 8, 1887 to Louis Victor and Alice Saucier Alexis, he was educated in the local schools where he excelled academically. Alexis was determined to attend Harvard University. Not having the finances to do so, he began working in 1907(at the age of twenty) as a railway mail clerk, saving for the education he so desperately desired.
By the time he reached twenty-seven, he had set aside enough money for four years of college. He applied and was accepted at Harvard but was asked to attend (for one year) Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, a prestigious preparatory high school. While at Exeter, he lived in the home of Mr. H.F. Quimby and soon developed a keen interest in foreign languages and the sciences. By now he had only enough money for three years upon entering Harvard, so he managed by graduating “cum laude” a year early (1917). It was there, at Harvard, that he earned the nickname: “The Negro Einstein.”
That same year, Alexis entered Officers’ Training School in Des Moines, Iowa and was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant and assigned to the 367th Infantry on October 15, 1917. World War I was raging in Europe and Alexis sailed for service in France on June, 1918. Two months before departing, Alexis married Rita Holt in Gulfport, Mississippi and together they would have one son, Lucien Victor Alexis Jr.
Upon returning to New Orleans, Alexis took up the profession of teaching. He was assigned to McCarthy Elementary in 1921 and appointed Assistant Principal in 1923 at Willow Elementary. But his greatest reward came in 1926 when he became principal of McDonogh #35, the only public high school opened for the education of colored students in the city of New Orleans. For the next nearly 30 years, he would leave an indelible mark on this institution which is still being echoed by many of his formal students up to the present day.
“It was not unusual to spot our principal walking up and down the corridors of the Rampart Street School reading scientific works printed in German. Noted for his mastery of Latin, he often found time to instruct advanced classes in the subject.” (Class of 1936)
Other graduates affectionately tell stories of his successful administration but also his dreadful “army”. Being a former military man, Lucien was said to be strict but fair as well as famous for his method of disciplining students. Students who violated his dress or discipline code were forced to join Alexis’ “army” and ordered to march up and down the second floor of the school building.
Respect for Mr. Alexis soon extended beyond the school grounds and into the community. Since McDonogh #35 was located on South Rampart and Girod Streets, the students had to pass through a neighborhood of sleazy bars, houses of prostitution and various other vices. Often the girls were meddled by men on the way going and coming from school. Fortunately, once it was known that you were an “Alexis” girl, you were never meddled again. They respected Mr. Alexis and knew to show respect to his students.
The “Negro Einstein” did not give up his interest and love for science once he became principal. For five years he engaged in serious scientific study and soon published a 40 page brochure outlining his principles of a new theory which he termed his “ethonic” theory.
From 1929 to 1937, he published the following scientific articles: Fundamentals in Physics & in Chemistry, The Thermo-Electric Formula, The Riddle of the Magnetic Field, An Empirical Disclosure of the Fallacies of Relativity, A Counter-Deduction from Bent Alpha Tracks, Radiations-Their Loci of Travel and Their Loci of Origin, The Co-Origin of Gravity&Cosmic Rays, Simple Formulae for Measuring Atoms, Their Speed, and the Speed of Light.
Upon retirement, the brilliant educator and published author opened Straight Business School on North Claiborne near Esplanade Avenue and Mrs. Alexis basically ran it. Lucien Alexis also was president of the Supreme Industrial Life Insurance Company, founder and executive director of the School of Post-Modern Science in New Orleans, and a charter member of Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Alexis also spent a great deal of time on his favorite hobbies at home. On the 25th Anniversary of his graduation from Harvard, he told the Harvard press of these hobbies:
“Don’t interfere with my physics and chemistry, which I have raised from the ignoble position of a hobby into the dignified status of a science. Don’t interfere with my Italian which I have picked up since leaving you fellows. Don’t interfere with my German, my French, or my Spanish which I have kept plugging at. These are my near hobbies. You may interfere with my gardening and my frequent efforts at directing operettas, especially the Gilbert and Sullivan ones, for there you are in the field of real hobbies of mine.”
Lucien Alexis passed away December 18, 1981. He is buried in the family’s tomb in St. Louis Cemetery No.3.

Annoyance seemed to be your constant mood for the last couple of weeks. You absolutely hate when he does this shit! Goes “missing”, and doesn’t reply to your texts nor answer your calls, FaceTime seemed to be unknown to him, and at this point, even a handwritten letter would be enough to settle your aching heart. But no, not to Mr. “I Decide Whenever You Get To Talk To Me” who’s too good to let you know he’s still alive. If he wants to play this game, you’ll make sure he has to deal with the consequences.
“Oh no no no no, c’mon! You gotta be fucking kidding me!” You whined in the deserted street while your eyes spotted the front door to your house slightly open. This was the cherry on top of your already shitty and stressful week, a goddamn robbery! This had to be some sort of bad-taste joke from someone in the skies above. Who could’ve known a couple of unfinished Hail Marys would come back to bite you this hard in the ass.
Grabbing a piece of log from the backyard you steadied and mentally prepared yourself for the possibility of having to hit someone in their head as you entered the living room. The strong and fresh scent of coffee hit your nostrils like a punch, and when the log fell from your grip with a loud thud on the living room’s floor, you for once wished it was a burglar inside your home so at least you wouldn’t have to deal with the petulant figure before you.
“Hello, sugarplum. Long time no see” Malakai smiled widely. His face was shaved smooth and there were still remnants of his black makeup underneath his pale white orb.
Anger was the first feeling you acknowledged, followed by relief that soon enough was replaced with hatred.
Malakai sat in the hot pink armchair, dressed in black, and with an ankle resting on top of his knee. His tattoo sleeves were on display, and his inked hands played with the Alice In Wonderland teacup in his hand.
The next nine words were the only ones your lips seemed to know how to mutter “That cup is meant for tea, not for coffee”. But upon hearing the playful chuckle coming from him, your numb state of mind was quickly replaced by an annoyed one, “And get the fuck out of my house!”
The playful smirk didn’t leave Malakai’s lips, not even after hearing your angry outburst. He simply took another sip of the steamy black liquid and moaned “Why does coffee always taste better at your place?”
You were not going to back down from this, not this time. With a determined gaze, you pointed to your front door and only spat one word at him “Leave!”, before placing your bag on one of the wooden wall hooks and taking your way straight toward the kitchen.
The loud thumping of heavy boots followed you to the kitchen and the once numbed anger began to rise to the surface.
You turned around to face the man who was responsible for your constant sorrow. “Are you fucking deaf? I told you to get the fuck out!”
Without breaking his gaze away from you, Malakai filled his cup with the freshly brewed coffee before simply answering “No”.
Your fingers closed around one of the black handles in the acrylic knife holder, instantly pulling the blade and pointing at him “Get out or I’ll make you get out!”
Malakai’s deep laugh only served to annoy you even more, he leaned on top of the kitchen island, wetting his lips with his tongue and momentarily making you forget why you hated him so much right now.
“I always loved that fire in you. You’re so…saucy” He chuckled. “So different from all the other women I’ve been with. There’s something about you that is so addicting”.
You knew what he was doing, it was with the very same smooth talk that Malakai convinced you of forgiving him the other couple of times he pulled out the same disappearing stunt, only this time you were not having it.
“Out! I’m not going to repeat mysel- What the hell are you doing?!” You screamed soon after Malakai got on top of the kitchen island on his hands and knees. He slowly crawled toward you, instantly reminding you of those predator documentaries you used to watch on Animal Planet during one of your many sleepless nights.
When he finally reached you, Malakai sat on the cool granite stone, his legs hanging from the island countertop now serving as a shield that keeps you within his reach.
“Don’t you love me, sugarplum? Didn’t you miss me? Not even a little bit?” His sugar-coated voice covered your needy heart like a warm blanket.
Shaking your head in disbelief, you asked him to leave once more, but Malakai ignored your request and continued:
“Is this because I didn’t call you? Is that why you’re so mad at me? Because I didn’t send you a goodnight text” He smirked, “I thought we surpassed that”. Malakai’s hands cupped your cheeks, pulling your face closer to his, he let his thin lips bump into yours. The feeling of his smooth skin against your chin brought a feeling of unfamiliarity deep inside you.
“I already told you that I work with some dangerous stuff, and I don’t want you to be a part of that. It’s not a safe place for a beautiful woman like you”
“Julia knows everything though. She’s a beautiful woman and still, she knows everything you’re up to! You answer her calls, texts, emails…hell, I bet you’d even answer her telegram if she sent you one”
“Julia’s different-”
“Why? Because she’s adorable and blonde?”
*What is wrong with me?!* You mentally asked yourself the minute the words left your lips. You don’t have a problem with Julia, as a matter of fact, you’ve never had one. You love her like a younger sister and know that Malakai feels the same, *So what is my problem? Why am I suddenly attacking her as if she was my enemy?* You asked yourself once again until Malakai’s voice pulled you back to the present.
“Because she works for me. Nothing more, nothing less, and you know that” His hand traveled down your face, closing his grip around the sides of your neck, Malakai growls “Stop being so fucking paranoid! And stop accusing me of cheating on you, otherwise I’ll do it just so you can have a real reason to bitch about it”.
“What a fucking asshole you are!” You abruptly pulled his hand away from your neck “How fucking dare you?! You know what? I’m so fucking done with you! Get the fuck out of my house, get the fuck out of my life, I never want to see you again!”
“You’re breaking up with me?” Malakai tried to hold back his amused smirk but it was in vain. “Are you jealous, sugarplum?” He asks, and once he sees how flustered you were, his teasing smirk turns into a toothy grin. “Come here” He tries to pull you closer to him by your neon green tank top but you successfully manage to escape him.
“Fuck off, jerk!” You slapped his hand away “Stop, Malakai. I’m serious! I’m mad at you and I don’t want you here anymore”
“Malakai?” He chuckled “What happened with ‘baby’, ‘handsome’, and ‘my love’?”
“Dissapeared once you started acting like a fucking prick!”
“I love when you get all feisty like this. It’s the perfect combination of cute and sexy. It makes me want to do bad things with you” Malakai kissed the corner of your mouth, instantly making you whine “Stop it!” in return.
The low chuckle rumbling in his chest, and the mischief playing in his eyes were making it hard for you to stay mad at him for ghosting you again.
“But you don’t want me to stop” He murmured against your lips “Because you love me”, a sinister smirk danced across his lips.
You mumbled a quick “Shut up” before he smiled, “Am I lying though?” He asked with sincerity.
“I don’t enjoy you rubbing in my face the fact that I’m a dumb bitch for loving you”
“C’mon, you know that’s not what I meant” Sarcasm dripped from every word as he closed his arms around your waist.
“Why do you enjoy making fun of me so much? Just because I’m not a heartless piece of shit like you doesn’t mean that my feelings or my heart deserves to be used as your jester”
“Heartless piece of shit? Ouch, that one hurt” Malakai cackled, his hands now rested on top of your ass, and his fingers began to knead the meaty flesh of your backside. “And who says I don’t love you?” His sharp teeth tugged on your bottom lip, pulling it down until the soft skin escaped from his grip “I do love you, sugarplum…in my own way”.
“I fucking hate your way of loving”
Malakai’s lips captured yours in a famished kiss, enabling you from speaking anything else. His hands traveled through your curves, squeezing, kneading, and scratching every part of your body. He pulled back and allowed you to catch some breath before he repeated the same previous steps.
“You don’t say that when I make you scream all night long though” He murmured teasingly against your wet, swollen lips.
“I’m not playing, Malakai!”
With an annoyed sigh, Malakai held your face in his hand. “Fine! What the fuck do you want then? Do you want me to tell you all about my work life so you and your family can be targeted by my enemies, is that what you want?”
“I just want you to stop ghosting me every time you have to leave for a job, damn it! Is that too much to ask for, asshole?!”
“If I do that I’ll automatically put you in danger, you dumb bitch!”
Before you could process everything, your hand connected to his face, the harsh slapping sound was soon replaced by another one when Malakai’s fingers landed on your cheek. Time seemed to stop as you both stared in disbelief at each other, the surprise gave place to a much more primal feeling that caused Malakai to harshly kiss you again.
“I just want to know that you’re still alive” You murmured against his lips when he broke the kiss.
“I’m not gonna die, sugarplum”
“Yeah, so say everyone, until they get shot in the face!” You stomp your feet against the hardwood floor, making Malakai chuckle:
“Alright, woman! Goddamn it, I cannot believe you’re making me say this” He murmured to himself before he nodded, “Okay, from now on I’ll let you know that I’m alive when I’m on a job, but” He added emphasis on the ‘but’ to prevent your winning grin from becoming to wide, “It’ll be on my terms! We’ll both get a burner phone and I’ll occasionally let you know I’m fine, but we're not gonna be all lovey-dovey and shit with it! Don’t call me, I’ll call you. If you try to contact me I’ll not answer you, I’ll get rid of the goddamn phone, and we’ll never do this again, do you understand me?”
“Yes” Your smile was wide and victorious, making Malakai mumble “I already regret agreeing to this”.
Your arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him down to meet you halfway for a kiss “Thank you, baby” You whispered against his coffee-flavored lips.
“So now we’re back to ‘baby’, huh?” He pinched your ass with a teasing smirk.
You let your fingers trace the tattoo on the side of his head as you smiled pridefully “Just because you decided to stop being a jerk”
“Let’s see if you’ll still think I’m a jerk after I put you in your place” Malakai’s grunt was playful as he squeezed the sides of your neck.
Your eyes fluttered closed for a few seconds, enjoying the feeling of his warm hand around your neck. You leaned forward, breathing against his parted lips “I’d like to see you try, pretty thing”.
And that was enough for him to push all the contents on top of the kitchen island down on the floor before roughly pushing you face down against the cold granite.

Alvin Childress
Tumblr media
Alvin Childress (September 15, 1907 – April 19, 1986) was an American actor, who is best known for playing the cabdriver Amos Jones in the 1950s television comedy series Amos 'n' Andy.
Alvin Childress was born in Meridian, Mississippi. He was educated at Rust College, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. When he initially entered college, Childress intended to become a doctor, enrolling in typical pre-med courses. He had no thoughts of becoming involved in acting, but became involved in theater outside of classes. Childress and Rex Ingram in the Federal Theatre Project production of Haiti (1938)
Childress's first wife was the former Alice Herndon, who established herself as a successful writer and actress under the name of Alice Childress (1916–1994); the couple was married from 1934 to 1957 and had a daughter, Jean Rosa. From 1961 to 1973, Childress worked as an unemployment interviewer for the Los Angeles Department of Personnel and in the Civil Service Commission of Los Angeles County.
Childress moved to New York City and became an actor with Harlem's Lafayette Players, a troupe of stock players associated with the Lafayette Theatre. Soon, he was engaged as an actor in the Federal Theater Project, the American Negro Theater, and in all-black race film productions such as Keep Punching (1939). His greatest success on the stage was his performance as Noah in the popular drama, Anna Lucasta, which ran for 957 performances. He also worked at Teachers College of Columbia University. Childress also operated his own radio and record store in New York City. When he learned about casting for the Amos 'n' Andy television series, Childress decided to audition for a role. He was hired a year before the show went on the air.
In 1951, he was cast as the level-headed, hard-working and honest Amos Jones in the popular television series, The Amos 'n' Andy Show, which ran for two years on CBS. Childress originally tried out for the role of The Kingfish, but Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden cast him as Amos. Since he had been hired a year before the show began, Gosden and Correll turned the search for an actor to play "The Kingfish" over to Childress. In a 1979 interview, Childress shared information about some of the candidates. Cab Calloway was considered but found wanting by Gosden because of his straight hair. Childress said there were many famous men, with and without actual acting experience, who wanted to play the role. Eventually, old-time vaudeville comedian Tim Moore was cast as the Kingfish.
Shortly after the television show had ended, plans to turn it into a vaudeville act were announced in 1953, with Childress, Williams and Moore playing the same roles as they had in the television series. It is not known if there were any performances. In 1956, after the television show was no longer in production, Childress and some of his fellow cast members: Tim Moore, Spencer Williams, and Lillian Randolph along with her choir, began a tour of the US as "The TV Stars of Amos 'n' Andy". The tour was halted by CBS as the network considered this an infringement of their rights to the program and its cast of characters. Despite the threats which ended the 1956 tour, Childress, along with Moore, Williams and Johnny Lee were able to perform one night in 1957 in Windsor, Ontario, apparently without legal action. When he tried for work as an actor, Childress found none as he was typecast as Amos Jones. For a short time, Childress found himself parking cars for an upscale Beverly Hills restaurant.
Childress also appeared in roles on the television series Perry Mason, Sanford and Son, Good Times and The Jeffersons and in the films Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and The Day of the Locust (1975). When Childress appeared as a minister in a 1972 episode of Sanford and Son, he was reunited with two former cast members: Lillian Randolph of Amos 'n' Andy in the role of Aunt Hazel and Lance Taylor, Jr. of Anna Lucasta, with the role of Uncle Edgar.
Childress suffered from diabetes and other ailments. He died at age 78 on April 19, 1986, in Inglewood, California. He was buried at National Memorial Harmony Park in Landover, Maryland.

I have a friend who has recently gotten into Formula 1, and through texting with her I realized that a street racing AU for twilight could be really good.
> Carlisle is still a doctor, but in this case he specializes in plastic surgery.
> Edward comes from a racing family; both he and his brother Peter started racing young.
> Their parents both died of an H1N1 infection (fun fact this is actually a resurgence of the Spanish flu) because of their HIV positive status making them more vulnerable to infection.
> Carlisle had always been interested in racing, and so had met them through charity events organized by Mrs. Mason.
> Upon her death, Mrs. Mason asked that both her sons be adopted by Dr. Cullen, but he was only able to adopt Edward using the argument that he had inherited a genetic predisposition for AIDS from his father.
> Peter instead got sent to their aunt Maria, who was already a foster parent in Mississippi.
> Esme, in a fit of truly unhinged support for her new son, decided to indulge his desire to vent his emotions by joining a local street racing scene. She was, however, concerned about the relative safety of the practice, and pressured Carlisle to start his own scene in a smaller town to allow for a racing outlet with less influence from other illegal activity.
> After a few years in Chicago, Carlisle has successfully built up a scene in a tiny town in Washington, in a place where the two-officer police department for the region can’t do much to stop it.
> Before they move, Carlisle adopts Rosalie, a foster child who had been sneaking out to hone her skills working on the cars. He hopes to set her up with Edward, working on his car, but she ends up preferring to race her own cars, so Edward is still without a personal mechanic.
> The champions of the scene in Forks are called Vampires, because the prize is free plastic surgery from Carlisle, making winners appear ageless.
> Edward had always somewhat disliked racing, only leaning into it in his teens as a form of depressed rebellion. By the time he’s living in Forks he resents his Vampire status, resents that he seems somehow faster than the previous Vampires, resents that he feels he cannot just give it up without disappointing Esme.
> Down in Mississippi, Peter has also ended up street racing. It turns out Maria has been abusing her position in the foster care system to bring in new drivers, make money off the thriving betting scene while they’re still unknowns, then discarding them as they get too old, in collaboration with Jasper, who came back from Iraq with a silver tongue that got him out of many a field mission and gets the kids into racing.
> Little does Maria know, but Jasper has started dating Alice, the bookie who runs the betting on the races. She’s got him convincing Peter to throw races Maria had bet he would win, and so their business relationship is broken and Alice is run out of town.
> Peter tells Jasper about the new scene up in Forks, which he is aware of because he’s been following Edward’s socials, even though Edward fully burned that bridge in the immediate aftermath of their separation.
> After Jasper starts racing, and Alice starts taking bets on the outcomes, the races get more intense, and more and more local teens start to go out to watch and bet and even race.
> Of note are Bella, who was dragged out by Mike Newton, who thinks he is her boyfriend but is not, and Emmett, who took a fancy to Rosalie and has been following the races ever since she arrived.
> Bella takes an interest in Edward, but after she clears up Mike’s misunderstanding, has no way of knowing where the next race is to take place. She ends up enlisting her childhood friend Jacob Black, who has an interest in fixing up cars and so has been doing repairs for any kids on the res who want to race but can’t get a mechanic to help them out cause illegal.
> Jacob tells her about how the racing scene actually predates Carlisle by decades, and that the winners used to be called wolves. However, Carlisle wrested control of much of the scene from the locals who’d been running it by offering better prizes, and so the locals, Quileute and settler alike generally resented the Cullens.
> Emmett and Bella end up feeling the brunt of this, as their new friends grow distant as their relationships to the two Cullen children get more obvious. Edward is angsty about this.
> One particularly close race sees Jasper force Rosalie off the road, hitting Emmett. While she could have continued driving, her car being undamaged, she instead stopped to rush Emmett to the hospital in Seattle, a choice which saved his life according to the doctors there.
> Edward’s goes full New Moon over this, asking Carlisle to shut down the races and fully ghosting Bella.
> This simply causes the preexisting racing scene to resurrect itself on the res, with the Cullens as persona non grata. Jacob helps Bella get started racing (motorcycle races).
> A girl named Victoria from Chicago comes to the area, intent on getting revenge on Edward, who ruined her boyfriend James’ perfect racing record back when he was at his most depressed, coming off of his parents’ deaths.
> She brings in a bunch of new racers and in the significantly more crowded race Bella is wounded, which Edward feels responsible for and so confronts Victoria to an even more unsanctioned race, which he of course wins, even though he hadn’t raced in months because Rosalie was willing to work on his car, in large part for Bella’s sake, because Bella is worried sick about Edward, when Rosalie told Alice told Bella what he was planning to do.
> Finally, in a twist ending, Peter and Maria get into a huge fight, culminating in a high speed chase that kills both of them, leaving Peter’s secret daughter Renesmee, the reason he hadn’t left Maria, to his only living relative, Edward.
If anyone wants to write this, I’ll send it over to @twibunny Optional element to consider is the dynamic between Bella and Charlie as he hates the Cullens but also does not want his daughter doing illegal street racing. I’m sure there’s more I didn’t think of but I think the translation works better than it has any right to.

we all know Alice’s story which we can find HERE but points about her !!
— alice was born into a middle-class home in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1901. Her father was a jeweler and a pearl trader. Alice’s mother tended to their home because her father traveled often. Her mother loved her so and she loved her mother very much.
—   alice was prone to having premonitions of the future since she was a child, though they weren’t always correct. Though she rarely spoke of her power because her mother told her not to because people in town talked a lot especially during her adolescent years. On two occasions, she tried to warn a friend and a cousin with her unfortunate predictions, but they refused to listen and when the predictions came true, she was blamed for cursing them, earning her the epithets of “witch” and “changeling” from the townsfolk.
—   alice had a horrifying vision of her mother being murdered by a stranger. Trying to run after the carriage her mother left in, Alice saw it happen and tried to explained that it was murder, it was declared accidental and her father silenced her.
— within six months, her father remarried a blonde Yankee from Illinois whose father was a promising customer. Alice’s stepmother treated her coldly while making a pet of her sister. Alice suspected that the marriage and her mother’s murder were all planned and carried out by her stepmother. Her father raged at her for suggesting ill of his new wife.
—   then, Alice had a vision of her father and her mother’s killer planning to kill her, revealing the true face of her father.  Alice rushed to the town’s marshal, but her father was already one step ahead of her. He told the townsfolk that his daughter had gone mad, and had her trapped in a mental asylum two counties away.
—  while in the asylum, her head was shaved during the threat of typhoid outbreak. She also endured electroshock therapy which rendered her with total amnesia, but it also restored her naturally cheerful and humorous self.
—    a vampire who worked at the asylum befriended Alice and treated her like a daughter. He also frequently visited her with objects hidden in his hands to test her powers, and shielded her from other horrifying treatments as best as he was able.
—   one day, Alice had a vision of a powerful tracker named James coming after her, which occurred the moment he caught her faint scent. She informed the vampire of this, and he planned to escape with her, but Alice still saw James catching up to her, and every option he offered her ended the same way.
—   when he decided to change her, Alice saw that this would be very close, and they might not have enough time. The vampire immediately bit her, took her away and went to distract James, sacrificing himself in the process.
—   when she woke up, the pain of the venom (  along with the fact that she had shocking treatments  )  erased all of her memories . But her premonitions were also intensified .
—    later, she was led to Jasper, after receiving a vision of him, and the pair subsequently joined the peaceful coven of the Cullen family . the rest is history most of you know . she came to forks and while she does love her coven and the family she has built , if jasper ever wanted to leave she would leave with him .

TwiFicMas23 Day 1: lead & follow (Jessamine/Mary-Alice)
Tumblr media
Another year, another round of Ficmas!
We'll open this year with a fic that I started for Pride and just couldn't get right - I think the end section will be reworked before it's archived on AO3.
So this was kind of a thought experiment about how STL would have gone for Jessamine and Alice; how things went differently, how different choices were made, and what that looked like.
I hope you enjoy it!
lead & follow.
Open my chest and colour my spine I'm giving you all Swallow my breath And take what is mine
(Of Monsters & Men)
---
Like everything that has ever happened to one Miss Jessamine Whitlock, formerly of San Antonio, everything changes because of one small detail. One details that is so easily dismissed and forgotten, never something that seems like it’s meant to become something bigger or even slightly important in the long run.
And that's how it begins.
Jessamine finds her in a swampy clearing somewhere in Mississippi - it’s not important where, and Jessamine doesn’t care. She’s just standing there, staring off into space; with bright red eyes, and the kind of glow to her that only newborns have, half-covered in mud.
Experience has told her that no good comes from a solitary newborn - and there are no others around them, not that Jessamine can sense.
So she goes to take the newborn’s head off.
At least, that’s the plan.
Instead, the first blow has the newborn cowering, not even trying to fight back; her terrified face bisected by a crack, her thin hands holding it together as it heals. When Jessamine gets closer, the newborn lets out a whine and shuffles backward to nestle at the foot of a tree, surrounded by bushes and undergrowth.
(Her eyes are so big, it almost looks like they take up her entire face. The kind of eyes someone could drown in. Her black hair, uneven and wild, is pasted down to her face with a mixture of dried blood - her own - and mud. She is astoundingly pretty - if uncomfortably thin - which is probably the reason she was turned… if her change was intentional.)
She doesn’t look like much more than a child. But Jessamine’s known Immortal Children, and their aggression, their lure, is something that this girl doesn’t have. She’s small, but she’s above the legal age.
So she decides to take one Mary-Alice (the name scrawled on the back of her garment, the surname blurred out and indecipherable) back to Maria.
If she’s a spy, she’ll be tortured for information and destroyed. If she’s a foundling, she’s another body on the battlefield. Either way, Maria gets something out of Jessamine bringing her back to Monterrey.
So she does.
Forks is turning out to be memorable.
That sounds stupid. Vampire memories are good enough that, by definition, all places are memorable. Except after decades of moving every five years from one large, remote house in a small town to another large, remote house in a small town, it all blurs together. Carlisle works in a hospital, Esme does charity work, and the rest of them go to school - dented lockers, the old-soup smell of the cafeteria, and computers that only work fifty percent of the time.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. It was like statis, in some ways, because it was always the same. Hell, in some of those underfunded shithole public schools, they were even the same textbooks a decade apart.
That’s why they were allowed to stay in Alaska for the full decade - after a round in Juneau playing the part. They had to earn their retreat into the lodge outside of the Denali National Park.
(Well, the screaming argument that she had with Rosalie might have indicated to Carlisle and Esme that they were all burnt out with keeping up the act. It hadn’t been one of her finest moments, but Rosalie had insisted on using her actual full name at their last three schools and Jess had put her foot down in Juneau. They were inviting trouble with the internet becoming more and more accessible. She’d won that argument, which was rare enough that it was notable, and they’d attended school as Rose and Jess Platt. It was more than fifteen years ago, and she wasn’t entirely certain Rosalie had forgiven her yet.)
It had been nice. Nice to exist as who she was, and not have to remember all the details that went along with their cover story; not to have to second guess everything she said or did or wore because she was supposed to be an ordinary teenage girl. Nice to be able to venture into the woods for days on end and not have to be anywhere. Nice to run bare foot through the snow, because that was a feeling she still savoured as a novelty more than sixty years later.
And then Carlisle had taken them to Forks, and pushed them back onto centre stage; the maladjusted Cullens (and Hales, again. She is fighting a losing battle over that.)
(She’s getting too old for this.)
She wasn’t expecting Forks to be anything. Just another black pin on the map in her study of all the places they’ve found themselves in - there’s a red pin in Monterrey for obvious reasons. There’s a silver one in Nebraska, the place where the Cullens found her (not her most dignified moment, honestly.)
There’s a silver one in Mississippi too. One that she worries at, takes out and puts back in, because she hates that she’s so damn obvious. That she’s giving away her secrets - especially the secrets that she refuses to confess to herself half of the time. But she’s on a new kick, a new lifestyle of being honest with herself and with others. That rewriting history does no one any favours, so it’s better just to be straight forward and tell the truth.
(Eventually she’ll feel at home as this new person, this honest girl who owns her failures and her weaknesses. It’s been sixty years, it’ll stick soon.)
She digresses.
Forks… well, Edward and Bella certainly made it distinctive.
She wasn’t going to lie and say that it didn’t feel good to fight again, to destroy. That James went down realising he made a terrible mistake and picked the wrong fight on the wrong day, and that she was very thorough, and took great pride in her work. That Jessamine Whitlock had a reputation to uphold. She likens it to stretching out muscles that have been in recline too long - a runner getting back into training after sitting out of the race.
(She might have been too enthusiastic, because Emmett was kind of slack jawed when James was finally ash. But it’s good to know that she’s still got it - that sixty years of domesticity hasn’t dulled her too much.)
Jess has zero idea of where Edward and Bella are going to end up - probably with Bella dead, if she’s honest. (If Esme hadn’t intervened, she and Rose would have already dealt with Bella and probably Chief Swan at the same time. But she just cannot go against Esme’s politely-worded requests. No one is murdering the Chief of Police and his daughter. She just made it sound so reasonable.) With all the moving parts, with Edward and his hang-ups, and Bella’s impressive ability to attract trouble, she cannot see this having a happy ending. And really, however this pans out, Bella is going to lose her life.
But she keeps her thoughts to herself.
Victoria is still in the wind and, despite Carlisle’s faith in the goodness of people, Jess knows that without sufficient motivation - like having a debilitating gift that cripples you emotionally to the point of physical pain if you hunt humans - there is no meaningful chance that Laurent will remain a vegetarian with the Denali clan. They’re living on borrowed time.
But for all her bitching, at least Bella and Edward had made this more interesting than another mediocre high school eduction.
Speaking of which, her current class is coming to an end, and she has the overwhelming urge to stretch. The others don’t get that urge like she does, and Carlisle blames it on their human lifestyle. That Jess had the opportunity to run and fight and move on a scale none of the Cullens have really ever had. The others find it odd that she paces, stretches, twists and turns when they are content simply sitting or standing.
Some days she just runs loops up to Canada and back down to Forks, to burn the energy and the itch. Edward might join her for a couple, Emmett too, but no one likes to run as much as she does. No one else feels like instinct to move like Jess.
The bell rings, and she’s quick to sweep her books into her bag. Maybe she’ll ask Rose to do her homework for her, and go running tonight. Go running and hunting, and tell Carlisle she’s keeping an eye for Victoria so no one looks at her like she’s going feral again. Maybe even wear shoes and one of those fancy outdoor jackets that Esme buys her, to help her look the part even when she’s running faster than the human eye in the depths of the wilderness, with blood on her face.
“Jess?”
She jerks to the side - not surprised, really, but having anyone address her is unexpected. She and Rose are not known for their warm personalities.
But Angela Weber is one of the few classmates that she tolerates. Mostly because Angela is polite, respects boundaries, and doesn’t ask stupid questions. Jessica Stanley, who is hovering nearby, is lower on Jess’s list of ‘people she should tolerate’, mostly because of the sheer amount of questions Jessica likes to ask.
Which is possibly why she’s keeping her distance.
(She blames Rose, honestly, that they’re approaching her at all - she’d been practicing braids in Jess’s hair that morning and she’d left them in for school. Apparently it made her look friendly enough to talk to.)
“Hmm?”
“It’s about Rosalie’s car…”
Angela has her full attention immediately; nothing causes a Rosalie Hale meltdown quite like the great-unwashed interfering with one of her cars. There had been an incident about a month after they started at Forks High, and whilst Rosalie had been contained quickly, it wasn’t forgotten by the student body.
“There's some junkie girl sitting on it,” Jessica announces and Angela winces at her friend’s bluntness.
Jess groans, and shoulders her bag, pushing past both girls without acknowledging them. This was going to be bad, and she was sure Angela would overlook her rudeness if it meant beating Rosalie out to the parking lot and removing whatever poor soul had a death wish by touching the BMW.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
Mary-Alice is an enigma.
Maria is equal parts exasperated and fascinated by her.
She claims to have no memories before waking up in the woods.
She doesn’t know her maker. She doesn’t remember being human or how old she is or where she is from. The only reason she knows her name is because it was written on her garment and Jessamine gave it back to her. She tells them all of that the second they get back to camp.
Maria doesn’t believe her. Not that it matters, because whatever her answer was, Maria has a very specific process for foundlings brought to her in Monterrey.
Maybe Jessamine should have warned the poor girl.
She’s mostly confused by the torture; it’s light, for Maria - the cracking and removal of a limb or two has the girl telling them everything. She sobs enough that venom gathers under her eyes and clings to her eyelashes. When Maria finally decides to release her, Mary-Alice doesn’t lash out like others before her have; instead, she goes over to the corner of the room to reattach her arm, to realign the joints in her legs, and shakes like a leaf when Jessamine approaches her, flinching away.
But Jessamine has to put her away, and nothing stops her from hauling Mary-Alice to her feet, her hand clamped around her good arm so she doesn’t try to run. She wouldn’t be the first.
The rolling horror of her emotions twists Jessamine’s stomach and makes her tighten her grip out of resentment as she escorts her to the barn with the rest of the newborns. She almost pities the little creature, still healing - her ankle is still knitting back to her leg, her limp like a little skip - and being thrown into the barn. But what goes on in there after dawn is a law unto itself, and something that Maria has never gotten involved in.
(Mary-Alice isn’t the first to be fed into the maw of the south, and she won’t be the last.)
Which is why it’s so fucking annoying that Jessamine can’t get the memory of her wide, venom-streaked eyes out of her head, even once she and Maria have retired to the house.
The next evening, Mary-Alice is quiet. She feels distant - that will become her trademark. That her emotions are as slight and ephemeral as her build. That for a long time, Jessamine will have to touch her to get a decent read on what she feels.
And after a while, even that yields nothing.
It doesn’t matter, though, because she settles well into training. Maria had named her as canon fodder - someone they’d lose early on, since she was evidently prone to hysterics and seemed too confused and innocent to really grasp what she was now a part of.
But… she’s fast and she’s a quick learner; a talented fighter. She catches on faster than Jessamine’s seen before; absolutely ruthless and precise. Her size is an asset, and does not reflect her strength. It’s been a while since Jessamine has been surprised by a newborn in training; she and Maria can measure up a soldier well enough by now. Mary-Alice, however, surprises both of them.
She’ll do nicely.
And she lives. One battle, two, six, twelve. She comes back from them all with insignificant injuries and nothing to report. Another success story for the Lady of Monterrey, and her unbeatable army.
Jessamine just tries to not to notice how haunted those big eyes have become, so quickly. How quiet and small she makes herself.
It's just how things are in the south.
She’d best get used to it.
With the imminent arrival of another patented Rosalie meltdown, Jess is cursing a lot of things - of course her class today is in H block at the back of the school. Of course today is the day the goddamn middle schoolers are using the library, and one of the sports teams is packing for a game. There are too many people crammed into the hallway, and Rosalie’s temper is the only thing distracting Jess from how good everyone smells.
She manages to intercept Edward, helping Bella navigate the corridors in that unwieldy cast, to warn him of their predicament and to hopefully distract Rose long enough for Jess to intervene and banish whomever thought it was a good idea to touch Rosalie Hale’s car. Edward looks irritated - mostly at Rose, but that’s just an ordinary Wednesday - and agrees that this needs to be handled fast and efficiently. Leave Emmett to be the one to manage Rose.
But of course, as they push through the crowds, her bag - the beat-up army-surplus messenger bag that Emmett gave her back in the 90s as a punchline to a joke, dotted with anti-war patches Emmett hunts for on eBay - decides to break, the buckle snapping up to hit her in the head and sending her shit tumbling to the floor.
She’s going to murder someone, but at least Carlisle will be pleased it wasn’t because she was thirsty, but because she was continually inconvenienced. Waving Edward and Bella on, she stops to scoop up her detritus - pens and pencils, her notes, her phone, all scattered along the floor - as other students ignore her and keep moving forward.
“You think they’ll call the cops?”
“She’s definitely a junkie. Mom says there’s a real problem out at the Res, and that Swan won’t do anything about it because he’s all buddy-buddy with a bunch of them.”
“She’s pretty obviously white, Ashley.”
“They’re probably selling shit to her.”
“Don’t be such a fucking racist."
“Banner went out to talk to her, and she says she’s waiting for someone. Said she knows the Cullens.”
“She looks like a middle-schooler.”
The gossip around her, as she shovels papers and books and pens back into her bag - fixable, but irritating - seems to prick at her, and she sets it aside long enough to tie the broken strap together. She’s probably lost her chance at beating Ro…
Said she knows the Cullens.
She looks like a middle-schooler.
That makes her pause. It shouldn’t, but it does.
Immortal Children don’t live very long, with the Laws. And most people won’t change anyone who isn’t definitively and absolutely old enough. No one wants to be the one that creates an ambiguously young newborn in case it all goes to shit.
Maybe there’s always been a little shard of hope tucked behind her heart.
There’s only been one girl she’s known, of all the newborns and nomads and friends of Carlisle’s over the years, that could pass for being a ‘junkie middle-schooler.’
One girl who made her a promise a long time ago.
(It might have been sixty years, but she never stopped having faith in those parting words.)
Time passes, newborns fall in battle, or they live to see the year pass by until summer comes and the pyres are built. And slowly but steadily, Jessamine feeds each piece and part of those newborns into the fire whether they are body parts left behind on the battlefield, or Jessamine takes off their heads herself.
Mary-Alice isn’t amongst that number. No, she survives each battle, and is lucky and fast enough that Maria shrugs and leaves it up to Jessamine whether Mary-Alice gets to live or die.
So, she lives.
Jessamine tells herself that it’s because no one expects much from her on the battlefield, so she’s the perfect cuckoo in the nest. The skinny kid with the big eyes that can take down men three times her size before they even realise they’ve lost.
She convinces herself of that for a long time. That her interest in Mary-Alice is merely academic, strategic, and nothing more. Even when she’s unceremoniously ejected from Maria’s bed - a long time coming, and not something she’s that unhappy about - she’s still convinced Mary-Alice is just another warm body for the army. One of the few that gets to live past their newborn year - like Dante and Lily and Javier. She has a purpose. Jessamine Whitlock is not one for sentiment, and not one for indulgences. If Mary-Alice wasn’t useful, she wouldn’t have been given a stay of execution.
And for a while, that’s how they stay. A soldier and a major. Training and hunting and recruiting. Mary-Alice proves useful at map-drawing and recruiting, even if she is entirely illiterate and far too sympathetic to potential recruits. Her answers to Jessamine are always short, deeply respectful, and unemotional - she’s never told a lie, even fumbled the details, in the entire time that Jessamine’s known her.
Maria likes that Mary-Alice has no human memories; thinks it makes her more efficient and effective. She wonders about ways to wipe memories of the newborns as a blanket policy; sever them from their humanity entirely. Peter and Jessamine manage to talk her out of that; there’s already a roughly thirty percent chance of a newborn changing wrong and having to be destroyed on the spot. It’s just making their jobs harder, to try and find that sweet spot between utility and amnesia every single time. It leaves them weak, without a full army, if it all goes wrong at the same time.
(And maybe Jessamine sees the confused, sad look on Mary-Alice's face when she’s listening to a conversation the most recent batch of newborns have - about weddings and families and birthdays and all those little things that make up humans and newborns often want to hold tight to, at least for a little while. But all it tells her is that Mary-Alice might be useful the way she is, but she’s hardly content with her lot in life.)
It takes over a decade for Jessamine to admit to herself that Mary-Alice isn’t there just for utility - that she wants more. Those big red eyes that feel like they see too much; the odd little spells she has where she stares off into space. The very few but almost charmingly unexpected questions. The shape and movement of her thin body underneath oversized clothes…
She wants more. She wants Mary-Alice.
(It’s been a while. There were a couple of newborns after Maria, easily caught and easily forgotten - Peter’s fine with being the one that ends Jessamine’s lovers during the summer, because it’s too much for her to deal with and they learned that the hard way. She kept to herself after that, bored and irritable with the last few batches.)
The realisation is one that feels like she’s always known it but also like she’s been struck by lightning. It’s no easier to admit to herself in the privacy of her own mind than it is to put the words into the world, but it’s always been there, simmering: that Mary-Alice was something, a moment of potential that she just had to be ready to take.
Jessamine has never been patient when she makes a decision; and it’s not like Mary-Alice is going anywhere.
It’s as simple as cornering her in the house before dawn; of a hand on Mary-Alice’s cheek and a kiss that is taken more than offered. An understanding that is exchanged in a glance.
The room Maria gave Jessamine is narrow, with an ancient, rotting day bed and a hay mattress. The mattress is sunken in the middle, and she snapped the legs off the bed years ago, to make it more useable. There’s a desk that barely stands, piled with her books and ragged maps and a few bits of discarded clothing.
It’s not a room she’s spent a lot of time in - a space used for killing time more than as a sanctuary.
Mary-Alice pauses to consider the room for a second; that’s all Jessamine gives her before there is another kiss, deep and lingering, and she can taste Mary-Alice’s venom - a lemon-sugar tang that makes her groan.
(Jessamine makes it clear what she wants from Mary-Alice that first night. Both of them stripped and on that daybed; Mary-Alice has less scars, just a dusting.  She’s still young. She’s just as tiny as Jessamine envisaged, her ribs leaving shadows on her skin, the soft swell of her breasts, the jutting bones of her hips… Jessamine doesn’t want to admit that she’s a daydream, a doll wrought just for her, because that makes this a complete disaster. She’s already ragged with emotion in this place, the last thing she needs to do is add in her own goddamn feelings.)
Mary-Alice has always been a good learner, a quick one, and Jessamine would be pleased with how willing she is if life didn’t feel like she was being hollowed out and left to rot most days. But there is some satisfaction in what they have, in being able to sink into each other. She knows every scar and freckle on Mary-Alice’s body, knows exactly how she moves, how she’s put together. It’s a feast and some days she wonders if those days lying sprawled naked on the hay mattress  are what truly sustains her.
(Maria catches them together one afternoon and lets out a bark of laughter. “You really are trying to destroy that girl,” she informs Jessamine, clearly entertained by what she’s found. That comment, what Maria saw in them that day, eats away at Jessamine slowly but surely. She does nothing with it, but it just sits in her mind to rot and it makes her worse. It makes everything worse.)
But somehow, she keeps her. Mary-Alice doesn’t leave, Jessamine doesn’t send her away, and they both ignore the rot.
And maybe Jessamine feels safe enough to talk to Mary-Alice - to Alice. Really talk, like she hasn’t been able to in… a very long time. She whispers little things in her ear, asks her what she thinks, tells her things she’d rather never speak aloud.
Alice is a good listener, but not much of a talker. She makes reassuring sounds, plays with Jessamine’s hair, and never really has a definitive opinion about complicated things. She doesn’t confide in Jessamine the same; there are no whispered confessions, no hushed fears or worries. It hurts because Jessamine is cracking herself wide open for Alice, and getting nothing in return.
(It hurts because Jessamine knows she doesn’t deserve any part of what she expects, and Alice is right not to tell her a damn thing.)
“It must be nice not to have secrets,” Jessamine says pointedly to her one day, lying together; fucking came before dealing with the bites and wounds from the last battle and Alice’s mouth is on the bite around her bony arm, licking away foreign venom so it will knit again. She lets out a garbled noise when Jessamine says that.
“What makes you think that?” Alice asks, looking curious. Blank, curious, pissed off - those were the sole emotions Alice was capable of demonstrating. Her physical emotions were no more telling, and sometimes Jessamine wondered if that’s just who Miss Mary-Alice was, or if that’s what the South had done to her.
“You never have anything to tell me,” Jessamine replied, almost sulkily. Alice shrugs and lies straight, looking at her frankly.
“I’ve never known anything but you and life here,” Alice says in that even, flat voice she always uses. “That’s all I have; any hopes or dreams or beliefs or regrets I ever had, I left behind when I was changed. I think you really need those things to have secrets, Jessamine.”
She’s not wrong, but Jessamine is admittedly jealous that Alice won’t entrust some kind of something to her; to tuck a secret into Jessamine’s greedy palms. But it also must be nice not to feel like you’re on the edge of a knife, about to fall into the abyss. Most of the time, Jessamine feels like she’s about to implode from everything. That she’s stretched taunt, and something has to give.
And Alice is just there, steady as she goes.
It must be nice.
(It’ll be much, much later - too late - when Jessamine finally realises how grotesque and nightmarish Alice’s life was. Is. How she had handed Jessamine what she truly wanted, that intimacy of her truth - completely hopeless, with no expectation or knowledge of anything better than what she had. And Jessamine had missed it entirely.)
“I don’t care who the fuck she is, I’m going to kill her,” Rosalie announces through clenched teeth, sending a few horrified freshman skittering out of her way like rabbits as Jess finally finds her family. She’d given up beating Rosalie to the car park thanks to the fucking ridiculous layout of this stupid school and opted to just try and diffuse the situation at the source.
“How did she find us here?” Emmett wonders, looking downright confused. “Why not go straight to the house? Esme would love having someone show up to visit.”
“Scent, probably. No other way to track us down if they were coming from the South-East,” Edward says under his breath, so no passersby can hear anything odd. “Do we have any idea of who it is?”
“Jessica was saying she had dark hair,” Bella says meekly, withering under Rose’s scornful glance.
“That doesn’t narrow it much,” Emmett has his arm over Rosalie’s shoulders, probably holding her in place. Even with Jess’s gift, Rose’s rage is hot and wild, and Emmett is probably the only thing keeping her in check. “Mary, maybe?”
“Mary hasn’t left California in forty years; and she’s taller than Jess,” Edward corrects. “Everyone’s focusing on how small this girl is.”
“At least it isn’t Jane,” Emmett shrugs. “We’d have known about that pretty fast.”
It’s been decades since they met with the Volturi as ‘honored guests’ of Aro, and none of them held that visit fondly. Esme had quietly admitted later that the visit to Volterra had taken the shine off Italy entirely.
Jess nods along, trying to focus on muting Rosalie’s anger, and not to think too much. She feels oddly sick at the possibilities in front of them. She feels stupid for putting the pieces together in her mind in a very-certain way. (She promised.) She’s… hopeful, but sick with the possibility she’s wrong and she’s got her hopes up for nothing.
“It’s not Maria, Jess.” Edward sounds like he’s trying very hard to be reassuring. “You know Maria, and she wouldn’t be this brazen.”
It’s both reassuring and embarrassing that Edward would jump to that conclusion: that Maria’s sudden appearance would be at the front of Jess’s mind when it didn’t even occur to her that Maria might be the sitting pretty on Rose’s BMW (fuck, she really does have a type).
(Also, Maria would not be sitting on the BMW looking homeless. The last time Charlotte and Peter ran into Maria, she was apparently wearing Versace and driving a Lexus - a stolen Lexus, without any kind of license, but the woman had very particular taste.)
Jess can’t think of other possibilities at that moment. She doesn’t want Edward to know because… whatever the outcome is, she doesn’t want Edward to look at her in sympathy. She might be trying out this whole ‘honest and transparent’ lifestyle but there are some things that are too raw, too much of a condemnation of her, to think about.
So she just nods, hands tight on the strap of her bag and wondering what she’s really hoping for.
(It’s been more than sixty fucking years. Hope is a dead thing that’s rotted back into the ground, brittle bones ground to dust. Some promises are made to be broken, and it’s about time that she made peace with that.)
In the end, she goes with Peter.
Or rather, Peter shows up and grabs her arm and tells her to fucking run.
(The long story is that for a very long time, she hates Peter. More than she hates Charlotte, even. She hates him for leaving her to the never-ending abyss of the wars, for taking away the steadiest and kindest thing she ever had. She doesn’t want to kill him so much as she wants to beat the shit out of him and scream at him for letting her down. She tells Alice that once, her voice shaking, and Alice had stroked her cheek. “I think Peter will surprise you. And I think when he does, you should take what he offers.” Jessamine scoffed because she doesn’t expect to see him again - he’s already probably dead, Charlotte too.)
So she turns and runs. She doesn’t even look behind her, doesn’t think about the stuff she’s leaving behind, doesn’t think about how he’s still alive, where Charlotte is, or even where they are going.
They just run. It’s a blur of dust and haze and terror trapped inside her that they will be caught and she’ll get the one person she’s always trusted, always relied upon to fix things, killed.
At the Arizona border, they slow down and maybe Jess grabs Peter and hugs him so tight she probably cracks something and she sobs so hard she’s wheezing. Her great escape from the Southern Wars and from Maria of Monterrey ends not with a celebration, of laughter and joy, but with both of them sitting in the dirt, Jess shaking and crying, with Peter trying to soothe her, his arms tight around her.
That’s how Charlotte finds them, and later Jess is embarrassed and humbled by Charlotte’s compassion, her acceptance, and her keen relief that they both made it out in one piece. Charlotte’s a better person than Jessamine, but they already knew that.
For a while, she feels like spun glass - impossibly fragile and distant from all that goes on around her. Time lacks meaning, and she’s not sure how many days pass after Arizona. Peter and Charlotte are gentle with her, and Charlotte is quick to remind her that it takes all of them a while to realize that there is something outside of that ugly bubble of the Wars; that what they lived through is just the smallest view of the world.
Jess just needs to take a breathe and let time work its magic, Charlotte promises. It will be okay.
Except, it’s six states and two months later that she feels enough like herself again that her brain starts working, that she starts having thoughts beyond the moment, and she immediately thinks of Alice.
Alice. Alice whom she left behind and never thought of. Alice who probably waited for Jess in her room - their room - in the mansion, and Jess never showed up.
Alice, who is still in Monterrey with Maria alone to pay the price of Jess’s abandonment. That’s the realization that makes her vomit up the meal she ate only a few hours earlier. Alice alone, paying for Jessamine’s sins and selfishness.
(Maria was right. She really did want to destroy Alice.)
Peter is kind but unflinching when he deciphers her distress. If Jessamine was that close to Alice, Maria probably tortured the shit out of her for answers, and then destroyed her. If going back was a possibility - and it really, really isn’t - she wouldn’t be alive to save.
It says a lot about the place they’ve all come from that the idea Alice is dead and gone is immensely reassuring, that Alice is somewhere soft and quiet now, where nothing can get her.
Except…
The last night, the last battle, lingers in her head and she remembers giving Alice and the others their orders and Alice meeting her gaze and replying, “I’ll follow where you lead.”
Those words are probably meaningless; Alice always followed orders and acknowledged them to set a standard for the newborns. Her confidence and certainty in Jessamine and Maria’s leadership set a tone that made the newborns fall into line with relative ease.
Except they aren’t; they’re ominous and heavy and loaded… maybe even something to hold tight to, something to tuck away and hope for.
Alice is fast and she’s a quick learner; a talented fighter. She catches on faster than Jessamine’s seen before; absolutely ruthless and precise. Her size is an asset and does not reflect her strength. She’s been a reliable fighter for Maria for decades, and she’s never told a lie. Without Jessamine, Maria’s ability to wield a newborn army is crippled; it would be foolish to destroy one of her longest-serving soldiers when she’s already lost Jessamine. And Maria is no fool…
…Maybe.
(A little bit of hope is a powerful thing.)
The journey to the parking lot feels like the path to execution, and Jess is intimately aware of the fact that either way, her family is probably going to know more than she wants them to.
There are students clustered around the parking lot, talking and whispering, and enjoying the Cullens being a spectacle again. Perhaps even hoping for a Rosalie smack-down because in small towns, the good gossip is treasured.
(Emmett might look like he’s casually walking with Rosalie, but she’s clamped at his side, and he’s whispering sweet nothings in her ear to diffuse the situation. Cars can be fixed and some people are stupid, babe. Don’t let anyone know they got to you.)
And then they are there, staring at Rose’s pristine car, and it takes Jess a moment to realise what she’s seeing.
She sits on the top of the SUV cross-legged, and she probably looks bored to everyone else. Just waiting for the Cullens to show up.
(Hope is a wild thing in her chest, somehow a million times more alive and wild now that Jess is faced with what she was secretly holding on for, that tiny flickering flame that she’s protected but never acknowledged since the day Peter declared her most likely dead finally burning free.)
To Jess, she looks exhausted. Wrung out and brittle, like she’s waiting for her execution.
But she’s here. And she’s alive.
Her hair is pulled into two very small pigtails on the top of her head with plastic clips, and somewhere she’s gotten ahold of glitter eyeshadow that is smeared liberally over both her eyelids. She’s wearing a frankly rancid cat-ear hoodie that looks like it was once a child’s, and some ragged capris, with a beat-up messenger bag beside her. Both of her skinny wrists are layered with beaded bracelets that definitely once belonged to a child.
The effect is jarring - childish and garish - but it is also somehow the most Alice. That this is exactly who she is - worn out, beaten-up, but still very  much herself. It feels like the first time Jess has actually seen her for herself and it’s exactly how Jess always assumed Alice looked.
“Jess?” Edward’s looking at her with a confused expression, but she’s not listening anymore. It’s like sixty years of trauma all knotted and tangled up inside of her has come loose and she can finally relax. That she’s finally putting everything together and maybe it will be okay now.
She strides over to the car, past the whispering students wondering how the Cullens know this weird barefoot girl and what Jess Hale is going to do, and right up to the SUV. For a second, they stare at each other before Jess drops her bag to the ground and climbs up onto the roof, their gazes never breaking.
Alice stares back at her, her expression not changing at all; her eyes just tracking her movement. There’s nothing there, no emotion or reaction. Just the flat gaze of someone used to being hunted.
And Jess kisses her.
She clasps Alice’s face in her hands and kisses her for the first time in more than sixty years, an apology and a celebration that Alice is here and she’s alive and they found each other.
Jess knows that behind her, the population of Forks High is gaping and whispering and judging - she can hear a few wolf-whistles, she’s sure that admin is already calling Carlisle and Esme to come in for a meeting with the guidance counselor, and that there will be a slur written on the front of her locker in the morning.
Small towns are all the same.
She knows that the penny finally dropped for Emmett and Rose (though she suspects that Emmett already guessed, after that weird speech he gave her back in ’79 about how it’s cool that he likes bears and she likes bears too and that everyone can like what they like, and it doesn’t have to be a big deal. She originally assumed it was because Carlisle and Esme were paying closer attention to the local wildlife and sustainability, but apparently it was really about her being gay. Metaphor was never his strong suit.)
Rosalie will be rolling her eyes that Jess had to be so dramatic and couldn’t do this privately.
She knows that Edward is going to have another spiritual crisis that involves too many dirges on the piano, a lot of whining at Carlisle, and somehow making the fact that Jess is gay all about his perpetual teenage-boy pain and hypocritical beliefs.
She doesn’t care that everyone is going to talk about her right up until the Cullens move away; that she’s going to be the ‘gay Cullen girl’ now, and made a whole lot of trouble for the family. She doesn’t care that Esme’s probably going to give her a sweet but awkward speech about how loved and accepted she is, and how she could have told them at any time.
It’s honestly going to suck for a few weeks, after this stunt.
But she doesn’t regret it. She doesn’t regret it because Alice is there and the familiar lemon-sugar tang of her venom hasn’t changed, and Alice doesn’t shove her away. And that’s halfway to everything being perfect.
When Jess pulls back, Alice squeezes her eyes shut. “I-I didn’t have anywhere else to go,” are the first words Alice speaks to her, quiet and nervous, and Jess hates so much that Alice seems so resigned, so small and tired.
Their good times might have been brief, a little flash in their fucked up, messy history, but that’s how Jess remembers her the clearest. That’s when Alice was the brightest.
Not this girl who seemed as substantial as mist, halfway dead and mostly lost; this girl that Jess feels is slipping away from her faster than she can save her. This is the version of Alice that terrifies the fuck out of Jess, frankly. A blank slate of emotion, no way to determine what she’s thinking or feeling, but she can see that all joy and hope has drained from her. The walking dead, in every way that matters.
And the idea that Alice would go anywhere else before coming to Jess, that Alice assumes Jess would not want her here makes Jess feel vaguely sick. That Alice is waiting for a reprimand, retribution, and punishment for coming to find her.
(What happened to her? This isn’t the steady girl that she left behind. This version of her is so very shattered. Of all the ways Jess had imagined Alice after she left, this one was never even a shadow of a possibility.)
“This is the only place you need to be,” Jess says in a low voice, reaching out to cradle Alice’s cheek. “I am so … fucking happy to see you. I missed you so much.” There are a million other questions she has - Are you okay? How did you get away? What do you need? - but she saves them, tucks them away for later when they are cloistered in a corner of the Cullens’ enormous house, and there is time for mess and raw pain and the opportunity to breathe.
Alice bites her lip and nods, and that’s when Jess’s siblings gather around the car, obviously having walked slowly to give Jess and Alice a moment alone. Or as alone as they could be with several hundred high school students watching and commentating.
“We need to take this back to the house,” Rose says stiffly; she’s not happy at the spectacle in front of the school, but she’s not particularly upset with Jess or Alice; Jess wonders how long Rose’s tolerance will last. “Edward’s taking Bella home.”
Somehow, reality is separate from whatever is happening right now, like she and Alice are in some kind of bubble, away from Forks and humans and all the day to day monotony. Right now, she’s just intensely aware of Alice’s body so close to hers; to that sweet lemon-sunshine scent that Alice has always had. Of the new scars on Alice’s hands and face that Jess doesn’t know; and the way she holds her right arm closer to her body. She is so intensely aware of the way Alice’s eyelashes brush her cheeks as she blinks, perfectly still and perfectly unhappy.
None of it feels real, not even with Alice’s hand in hers.
“Let’s go,” she manages to tell Alice, who nods. She always follows orders.
Jess slides off the roof of the car to land next to it, reaching out a hand to help Alice down.
“I’ve got you,” she says, brushing some of Alice’s hair off of her face.
Alice stares at her for a moment, those big dark eyes that Jess has been in love with for longer than she can remember.
“You always have,” Is all she says, as they climb into the car, but she doesn’t take her hand out of Jess’s.
I’ve got you.
alice.
The Cullen house smells clean and like the woods at the back of the garden. It’s full of light, it’s dry, it’s a hundred different things that Monterrey never was and could never aspire to be. Like so many things she’s known lately, it feels like something she’s allowed to see, but it’s not for her to keep. A stolen glimpse before she keeps moving.
Her feet stick to the wooden floors, and she’s intensely aware that the lake bath she had before she got to Forks is not enough for these people. They wear shoes and jewelry, and they’ve got their clothing in the right order. They aren’t like her.
Right now, everything feels very far away, like she’s watching herself from a great distance.
She knows that Jessamine is waiting for her to speak, to say something small. To offer her a truth, a reason, for why she came to her. To finally share that cursed secret Jessamine demanded all those years ago, when keeping it was the only thing that kept them both alive.
Maybe the thing she wants more than anything is to scream and scream until it all spills out of her. That she’s all knotted up inside, that aren’t so much secrets as the whole, messy truth.
The truth is that she was raised back up with no memory of love or affection or family, just a vague promise of it that was ruined before she even began, and she’s not really sure how love is supposed to feel anymore.
So she’s spent eighty years clinging to a half-glimpsed possibility of her and Jessamine meeting in a human establishment, of that soft and perfect promise because she had nothing else, and now she’s not who she was when Jessamine left her, and she’s never going to be who she was supposed to be, not for herself or for Jessamine or for both of them.
She knows if she could sleep, there would be nothing but nightmares and horrors. Of all the things she’s seen and done, all the things that have been done to her. That just to survive, to save them both, she had to let herself be swallowed up, bite by bite, by the wars and the propaganda and so many lies.
And now she doesn’t know if there’s anything left of her to salvage, let alone piece back together.
Jessamine’s hand is in hers, and it isn’t letting go.
That’s something.
All the words that are being spoken, they sound like they are muffled, underwater somehow. They look at her, waiting, and the words still don’t come.
The urge to scream is fading. Jessamine’s hand is still in hers; maybe she’s holding on too tight. She feels like if she lets go, everything will disappear.
So she holds on tighter and steadies herself and even manages to walk further into the house. Maybe she finds just enough words to explain that it’s all new and fresh and when she ran, it was like the flat of a knife against a human throat - a flash of a chance, more likely death than freedom, but somehow she made it work.
That the idea of hunting turns her stomach, and the whole world seemed so big and bright that the only place to go was to Jessamine.
“I’ve never known anything but you and life here.”
(Later, cloistered in Jessamine’s study wearing borrowed clothing, she’ll start to weep and she won’t be able to stop. Jessamine will hold her and stroke her hair and try to reassure her of things that Alice has never confided in her. They won’t be the last tearless tears she will cry, but they will be the rawest and the truest. She still doesn’t know what love or hope or dreams feel like, but whatever this is, it’s more than she’s ever had before.)
--
AN:
Yeah, this version of Mary-Alice somehow got the worst welcome to Monterrey; a vision of her True Love interrupted by said True Love deciding to attack her; taken back to Maria to be tortured for information for a couple of nights before being tossed into the barn with a bunch of fresh and vicious newborns who don’t recognise her as One of Them. She really opted to get all flavors of trauma packed into that very first week of life.
Mary-Alice never told Jessamine or Maria about her gift at all. According to them, she was giftless, just skilled. That first week really fucked with her head.
This version has Mary-Alice leave the South and head straight to Forks. There’s about a week between Mary-Alice fleeing Maria and turning up on the Cullens’ car, so there’s a lot of fresh hurt and a lot of terror at being in a brave new world where she doesn’t know the rules. So, she’s been with Maria from 1919 right up until the 2000s.
Jess, to me, has always had a more hair-trigger temper and spontaneous personality compared to Jasper. This is because of the period-typical emotional repression that men aspired to during the Civil War; Jessamine is a little freer with expressing herself because, frankly, it would take balls to run away and pose as a boy to join the army, and even more to achieve the rank of Major. Jessamine is definitely a wildcard.
I spit on Life and Death’s version of Jessamine being kidnapped into the wars.
It was intentional that Jess only shortened her name after she met the Cullens, and that whilst she calls Mary-Alice ‘Alice’, Mary-Alice never calls her ‘Jess’. How this is significant is up to you.
Yes, the relationship between Jess and Alice feels darker than in OG STL, but this is Jessamine's side of the story. She's always painted all of her choices and actions before the Cullens with the same brush - that she was toxic and monstrous.

Publishers' Binding Thursday
This week's Publishers' Binding Thursday book goes out to all the train lovers and wannabe train engineers out there! The book is Ralph on the Overland Express by Allen Chapman, a penname for American publisher and children's author Edward Stratemeyer. Stratemeyer was the creator of many well-loved book series including The Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift, The Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew. He was also the found of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, which published these and other series using a number of pseudonyms from 1899 to 1987. The books were largely written by ghostwriters, with Stratemeyer himself writing some or providing plot outlines until his death in 1930, when the company was left to his daughters. This book was published in 1910 by Grosset & Dunlap, who were the primary publishers of the Stratemeyer Syndicate books.
Ther cover features a steam engine in black with grey steam coming out the top and rolling behind it on brown bookcloth. The title and author's name are printed at the top of the binding. The spine has the train's light on it with the title, author, and publisher.
My favorite thing about the book is the advertisements for other Grosset & Dunlap books in the back. One is for the "Outdoor Chums" series, featuring titles like "The Outdoor Chums on a Houseboat, Or, the Rivals of the Mississippi."

As Alice drove, she chatted about what the rest of the family had been doing. I found that they had moved to New York. Carlisle was teaching at Cornell part time which was, you know, just fantastic. So glad he was enjoying himself.
Emse was doing some historical reconstruction of some seventeenth century building. Emmett and Rosalie had gone to Europe for a honeymoon. Jasper was learning philosophy at Cornell. Alice meanwhile, had been doing some digging about her own past.
"My name was Mary Alice Brandon. I had a little sister named Cynthia. Her daughter- my niece- is still alive in Biloxi."
Mississippi.
"Did you find out why they put you in. . . that place? What would drive parents to that extreme? Even if their daughter saw visions of the future. . ." Bella asked.
"I couldn't find much about them. I went through all the old newspapers on microfiche. My family wasn't mentioned often; they weren't part of the social circle that made the papers. My parents' engagement was there, and Cynthia's. My birth was announced. . . and my death. I found my grave. I also filched my admissions sheet from the old asylum archives. The date on the admission and the date on my tombstones are the same."
The Cullens had been completely together- Edward was not with them- and they had been spending Spring Break in Denali with Tanya's family.
'Maybe Carlisle and Tanya are together' I thought blandly and was glad that I hadn't dragged Sam up there when I'd wanted to. That would've meant running into Carlisle and Sam probably would've tried killing him.
I sighed, peering out the window.
Once we got to the airport, I quickly made sure that my wig was in place before getting out of the car. Alice quickly bought three tickets to Italy. We would have to make a stop in New York and then board another plane through a connection to Italy.
There were no problems in the airport. People barely looked at me, which was such a relief I could laugh. My passport wasn't even looked at twice. Soon, we were on the plane. Bella's leg was bouncing up and down and Alice muttered, "It's faster than running."
Bella simply nodded.
I pulled out the book I'd brought with me. Yes, I know, I brought a book to save Edward from his demise. But really, if we were going to die, then I wanted to be enjoying a book.
I was reading The Necromancer: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. It was the fourth book in a series of six. It truly was a shame that I might not have the chance to finish the series off.
Alice lifted the phone off the back of the seat as the plane rose into the sky while Bella eyed the stewardress. I listened in to see who Alice was talking to. ". . . changing his mind. . . a killing spree through the city, attacking the guard, lifting a car over his head in the main square. . . mostly things that would expose them- he knows that's the fastest way to force a reaction. . . No, you can't! Tell Emmett no. . . Well, go after Emmett and Rosalie and bring them back. . . Think about it, Jasper. If he sees any of us, what do you think he will do?"
Pause.
She nodded, "Exactly. I think Bella and mom are the only chance- if there is a chance. . . I'll do everything that can be done, but prepare Carlisle-" His name sent shocks through my heart, "- the odds aren't good."
She laughed with a catch in her throat, "I've thought of that. . . Yes, I promise. Don't follow me. I promise, Jasper. One way or another, I'll get out. . .And I love you."
My heart caught in my throat. I felt so bad for her.
She hung up and closed her eyes, leaning back in her seat, "I hate lying to him."
I nodded. I hated lying to Sam. There was definitely a chance none of us were getting out of this.
Not that it mattered to me. My parents- dead. My brother Kol- dead. There was Sam and my werewolf sons. . . but they could get along without me. They'd be okay without me. They could survive. Sam had Emily. They had each other.
I rubbed the tattoo on my wrist. I loved them. I truly loved them. They were my family now. I wish I didn't have to leave them.
"Tell me everything, Alice. I don't understand. Why did you tell Jasper to stop Emmett, why can't they come help us?" Bella asked.
"Two reasons. The first I told him. We could try to stop Edward ourselves- if Emmett could get his hands on him, we might be able to stop him long enough to convince him, you're alive. But we can't sneak up on Edward. And if he sees us coming for him, he'll just act that much faster. He'll throw a Buick through a wall or something, and the Volturi will take him down."
She paused, thinking deeply and then added, "That's the second reason of course, the reason I couldn't say to Jasper. Because if they're there and the Volturi kill Edward, they'll fight them. Bella. If there was any chance we could win. . . if there was a way that the four of us could save my brother by fighting for him, maybe it would be different. But we can't, and, Bella, I can't lose Jasper like that."
Especially since he'd spent so much of his life fighting.
"Couldn't Edward hear you, though? Wouldn't he know, as soon as he heard your thoughts, that I was alive, that there was no point to this?" Bella asked in confusion.
"You can lie with your thoughts." I answered quietly.
"Exactly." Alice said sadly. "If you had died, I would still try to stop him. And I would be thinking 'she's alive, she's alive' as hard as I could. He knows that."
Bella gritted her teeth in frustration. I could only imagine her anger. If Carlisle had tried pulling this crap I would be angry too. After all, they didn't want us anymore. They had casted us aside like an unwanted dog that bit to much. Carlisle hadn't even bothered to say good-bye to me.
"If there was any way to do this without you, Bella, mom, I wouldn't be endangering you two like this. It's very wrong of me."
"Don't be stupid. I'm the last thing you should be worrying about. Tell me what you meant, about hating to lie to Jasper." Bella said, shaking her head.
She smiled grimly. "I promised him I would get out before they killed me, too. It's not something I can guarantee- not by a long shot."
"Who are these Volturi?" Bella asked. "What makes them so much more dangerous than Emmett, Jasper, Rosalie, and you?"
I mostly stopped listening at this point. I knew they were dangerous. Aro could hear every thought in your head with one touch of your body. Marcus could test familial bonds, test and see where they were weak, gauge how strong they are.
There was Jane who could cause pain by looking at you. And then her opposite twin Alec who would cause no feelings at all. Then there was Demetri who could track you down knowing nothing but your name. Felix was as strong as Emmett, maybe stronger. Chelsea keeps the guard together with bonds and can also break bonds. Renata was Aro's shield. Santiago who also possessed great strength. Heidi was a bit of a fisher, able to lure the humans into Volterra for the others to eat.
I shivered, pulling out my earbuds. I drowned myself in babymetal so that I couldn't hear anything else.
I let the heavy metal with cute Japanese little girl voices sing in my head until I felt a jarring motion and realized we had landed in New York. Huh, it had felt rather short.
I pulled out my earbuds as Bella made Alice get up. We ran to get to our connection, but it was worth it as the plane took off almost immediately. I immediately set myself back into Baby metal, trying to fall asleep.
A few minutes- hours really- Alice motioned to both Bella and I excitedly. I groggily extracted my earbuds from my ears, wondering what she was so excited about. Night had fallen outside the windows.
"What's wrong?" Bella muttered.
"It's not wrong. It's right. They're deliberating, but they've decided to tell him no." Alice said with a smile.
That was good?
"The Volturi?" Bella muttered again.
"Of course, Bella, keep up. I can see what they're going to say."
"Tell me."
"Can I get you ladies a pillow?" A male flight attendant asked. I knew my wig was slightly loose so I didn't dare look at him.
"No, thank you." Alice said.
"Tell me." Bella said again.
"They're interested in him- they think his talent could be useful. They're going to offer him a place with them."
"What will he say?" Bella asked curiously while I gingerly fixed the hairline on the red wig. The bun was starting to give me a headache. I would be able to take it off once we were in Italy.
"I can't see that yet, but I'll be it's colourful. This is the first good news- the first break. They're intrigued; they truly don't want to destroy him- 'wasteful,' that's the word Aro will use- and that may be enough to force him to get creative. The longer he spends on his plans, the better for us."
Okay so it was good news. Good.
"Alice?"
"What?"
"I'm confused. How are you seeing this so clearly? And then other times, you see things far away- things that don't happen?" Bella asked curiously.
"It's clear because it's immediate and close, and I'm really concentrating. The faraway things that come on their own- those are just glimpses, faint maybes. Plus, I see my kind more easily than yours. Edward is even easier because I'm so attuned to him."
"You see me sometimes." Bella added.
"Not as clearly." Alice said.
"Clear enough you saw her cliff diving." I grunted.
Bella sighed, "I really wish you could have been right about me. In the beginning, when you first saw things about me, before we even met. . ."
"What do you mean?" Alice asked curiously.
"You saw me become one of you." Bella muttered so quietly I almost missed it. I almost sighed aloud.
Alice did sigh. "It was a possibility at the time."
"At the time." Bella repeated dully.
"Actually, Bella. . . Honestly, I think it's all gotten beyond ridiculous. I'm debating whether to just change you myself." Alice finally said.
I froze and so did Bella.
"Did I scare you? I thought that's what you wanted." Alice asked, confused, staring between the two of us.
"I do! Oh, Alice, do it now! I could help you so much- and I wouldn't slow you down. Bite me!"
"Jesus Bella." I hissed. "Shut up."
"Try to be reasonable." Alice said. "We don't have enough time. We have to get into Volterra tomorrow. You'd be writhing in pain for days. And I don't think the other passengers would react well."
"If you don't do it now, you'll change your mind."
"No. I don't think I will. He'll be furious, but what will he be able to do about it?"
"Nothing at all."
She laughed quietly and then added as an afterthought, "You have to much faith in me, Bella. I'm not sure that I can. I'll probably just end up killing you."
"I'll take my chances." Bella said stupidly.
"You are so bizarre, even for a human." Alice pointed out.
"Thanks." Bella said.
"Oh well, this is purely hypothetical at this point, anyway. First we have to live through tomorrow."
"Good point." Bella sounded excited. She looked sideways at me, "Will you be a vampire?"
I shook my head, "There's no point. Instead of a life time of sickness and suffering, it would just be endless forever suffering. No thanks."
"When you're a vampire, you might capture Carlisle's attention." Bella pointed out. "He wouldn't need distractions."
I scoffed, "Why would I chase a man who doesn't want me? If he doesn't love me as a human then he's not going to love me as a vampire. I shouldn't have to change myself to permanently to get his attention. Besides, Vampires aren't allowed on the Quileute rez so I'd much rather stay human thank you very much."
Bella was silent for a moment, probably lost in her own world again.
I fell back asleep and didn't wake again until the sky was turning pink and orange. I noticed Alice's late night enthusiasm was gone as we started to touch down in Florence, Italy. She was already talking to Bella and I listened in as I stretched, getting ready to exit the plane.
". . .got very close. He changed his mind at the last minute."
"He wouldn't want to disappoint Carlisle. Not at the end." Bella murmured.
"Probably."
"Will there be enough time?" Bella questioned.
"I'm hoping so- if he sticks to his latest decision, maybe." Alice said, but she didn't sound particularly hopeful.
"What is that?" Bella and I asked together.
"He's going to keep it simple. He's just going to walk out into the sun."
I didn't know if it would be enough. There were a lot of things that could be say. Reflective surfaces taped to his skin, glitter, sparkles, diamonds imbedded in his skin- hey rappers did weird things like that all the time- etc. There could be a very good reason for why his skin was sparkling. Grand effects for whatever.
". . . wants the biggest audience possible, so he'll choose the main plaza, under the clock tower. The walls are high there. He'll wait till the sun is exactly overhead."
"So we have till noon?" Bella asked.
"If we're lucky. If he sticks with this decision."
"How far is it from Florence to Volterra?"
"That depends on how fast you drive. . . Bella? Davina?"
"Yes?" We asked together, looking at her. I pulled on my leather jacket, fixing my wig slightly when no one was looking.
"How strongly are you opposed to grand theft auto?"
I grinned.
---------------
We careened down the road in a bright yellow Porsche. Honestly, I was having the time of my life, beaming, the wind down just slightly to feel the heavy breeze rolling through.
"There's Volterra." Alice announced after about fifteen or so minutes of driving. We'd been weaving in and out of traffic which had been terrifying at first, but I knew Alice wouldn't crash. I wasn't even wearing my seat belt.
I looked over to the see the city that looked like it was built on a mountain. It was all the same tan colour and it looked like a maze of walls and roads and buildings. The main plaza was probably smack dab in the middle, making it a literal maze. The surrounding area was forest of green trees and luscious fields.
We were so totally dead.
Alice drove through the roads, showing me that there were indeed layers to the city. She beeped as she tried not running people over. Everyone jumped out of the way, everyone was also wearing red which was really, really weird.
"Why are they all in red?" Bella asked as Alice moved through a large crowd of people.
"Saint Marcos Day festival." Alice replied with complete indifference, "They're commemorating the expulsion of vampires from the city. It's the perfect setting."
I snorted from the irony.
"The Volturi will never let him reveal himself."
"We have five minutes." Bella was practically crying in the front seat. I could feel my heart beating faster as my stomach churned at the deadline.
"Bella, just breathe." Alice said.
Police officers stopped us at the next check point. "Let's go." I muttered to Bella, throwing my door open. Bella threw her door open as well and we started to run.
"Where are we going?" Bella shouted after me.
"The clocktower of course." I shouted behind me.
Bella and I ran, pushing past people in red as much as we could. We ran up stairs, down alleyways as we searched for the clocktower.
The sun was beating down on us and I stripped off the leather jacket, wishing I'd brought something different so I could just tie it around my waist. Instead, I just held it under my arm as I sprinted, pushing past more people.
Me and Bella came to a stop as we reached a wall of people that were watching a parade go by.
"Come on." I muttered, starting to push through people. If I had to cross the parade to get to my son, I would.
Me and Bella dashed through an opening in the parade, continuing to cut through people. I could see the clock tower in front of us.
Pushing through the crowd of people, we suddenly found ourselves in front of a fountain. 'Well damn' I thought.
The clock hit twelve.
"Fuck." I cursed aloud, jumping up on the fountain, running along the edge of it like a balance beam, except it was wider than a beam.
I could see Edward walking out of the door and I could hear Bella screaming Edward's name behind me.
"Damn you Eddie." I muttered, sprinting towards him. I could hear splashing in the fountain and I knew that Bella was running across the fountain. I leapt off the stone fountain edge as he finished unbuttoning his shirt. Bella suddenly tore past me, water flying off her shoes as he stepped out into the light, tackling him backwards into the church.
Bella and I shoved him together into the clock tower, the doors slamming behind me. "Bella? Mom?"
I huffed, furious now that Edward was alive and in my sights, "You complete arsehole Edward Cullen!"
Edward looked slightly abashed, but he couldn't keep his attention on me for long, turning to Bella instead. I rolled my eyes, leaning against the stone wall. We'd probably have to stay here until night set. I hoped Alice could find us.
Was Bella really going to forgive Edward so quickly? Oh yep, they were kissing. Well damn.
I really hoped we took planes straight back to Forks and then they could go to Alaska to see the others. The last thing I wanted to do was see Carlisle again. The others- fine. My kids- fantastic, Esme- wonderful. Carlisle- fuck me.
Wrong choice of words.
Screw him.
No, wait.
Shit.
Suddenly, there was a noise like an elevator and I looked over to see two pale, male figures making their way over to us.
One was slightly smaller with blond hair while the other was bigger, hulk like, with dark hair.
"I won't be needing your services after all, gentlemen." Edward said, holding Bella close.
"Aro wants to speak with you again." The bigger folk said.
"No rules were broken." Edward protested.
"Nonetheless, we should take this conversation to a more appropriate venue." The smaller man said, looking at me and winking. I raised an eyebrow. Now that he was closer, I saw the blond was more of a dirty brown blond.
"Fine." Edward said. "Bella, Davina, why don't you two go and enjoy the rest of the festival?"
"The girls come with us." The bigger man said.
"Ooh lovely." I snarked under my breath.
"No. You can go to hell." Edward said.
"Eddie." I said sharply, raising an eyebrow.
Alice stepped in at that second, lowering the head scarf she had been wearing. "Come on guys. It's a festival. You wouldn't want to make a scene."
"We wouldn't." The dark haired man said when a third figure appeared. She was mostly definitely blond with large red eyes.
"Enough." She announced, tossing her hood back.
"Jane." Edward whispered.
"Aro sent me to see what was taking so long." Jane said, looking up at the darker haired man, then the lighter, looking at the other three, then me, before turning and going back the way she came. There was a no nonsense air about her and it made Edward follow after, Bella's hand tightly in his own. Alice followed after and I went with them.
The other two vampires waited till I passed by to bring up the rear.
The bigger man held out a red robe for Edward to put on, which he did.
"Go ahead." Jane said as she reached the part where the stairs turned downwards. We walked past and now the three of them were bringing up the rear.
Now that Edward was safe, I truly wasn't scared. We would meet Aro. We would either live or die. Personally, I preferred life, but it truly wasn't the biggest worry if I died. Although, admittedly, I hadn't redeemed myself yet and would probably be going to hell.
Eternal hell.
Lovely.
We finally filed into an elevator. While the others stood upright and stiff, I leaned against the wall. The better looking man, the small one who had winked, was staring at me. I looked back.
"Don't touch. I bite." I said, raising my eyebrows.
He grinned, "Oh, I like you."
I titled my head a little in acknowledgement. Jane snorted up front. The elevator music was horrible.
"Opera. Terrible." I muttered as the doors opened. The man snorted in laughter. The bigger man rolled his eyes.
We stepped into a lobby of sorts, a human woman behind the desk. I was surprised, but perhaps I shouldn't have been.
"Is she human?" Bella asked up front. I was walking between the man that seemed to like me- or at least I amused him- and Alice.
"Yes." Edward said.
"Does she know?" Bella asked after a few seconds.
"Yes." Edward was being quiet, like he didn't want anyone else to hear, which was ridiculous because I could hear which meant the vampires around us certainly could.
"Then why would. . .She wants to be." Bella answered her own question.
"And so she will be." The man next to me said.
"Or dessert." Jane said calmly ahead of us.
I rolled my eyes.
Jane opened up two double doors in front of us and revealed a large room that looked like a dome. In fact, it probably was. There were quite a few windows, but not enough for the light to fully reach the ground and make the vampires around us sparkle.
There weren't many vampires at all, two guards near the door, a young man in the middle of the floor, and three sitting upon thrones up on an altar.
"Sister, they send you out to get one and you come back with two." The vampire who must be Alec said. "And two halves making three. Such a clever girl."
I bit my tongue to keep from making a sarcastic remark.
The vampire sitting upon the middle throne- most likely Aro- stood, throwing his arms out wide. What a happy surprise! Bella is alive after all!" He stepped down the steps as we stopped.
He clapped his hands together, walking with normal speed towards us. Honestly, he wasn't that bad looking. His long black hair was pulled back in a ponytail and despite his three thousand year old age, he didn't look a day over thirty. His eyes of course, were red and I liked to image what they would look like if they were golden.
"Isn't that wonderful!" He finished. He reached out for Edwards' hand, "I love a happy ending. They are so rare."
I agreed. They were pretty much nonexistent.
He said something in Italian that I didn't bother understand because- I didn't know Italian. But whatever it was made Aro turn to look at Bella and he said, "Her blood appeals to you so much. . . it makes me thirsty."
I nearly snorted, but kept my attitude. Pretty sure a royal vampire king wasn't the kind of vampire I wanted to piss off.
"How can you stand to be so close to her?"
"It's not without difficulty." Edward responded.
"Yes, I can see that." Aro laughed, still holding Edward's hand. I had thought he only needed to briefly touch it, not hold it for extended periods of time.
I shifted my attention to the two vampires on the other thrones. Caius was even more handsome than in the painting. Not as good as Lucius Malfoy, of course, but still, rather decent. Marcus on the other hand looked like he had never gotten over the English days of King George.
I had clearly missed conversation as Aro turned his eyes to Bella and said, "Fascinating. I would love to see if. . ." He finally dropped Edward's hand, stepping back, "you are an exception to my gifts, as well." He held out his hand. Bella, after some hesitation, stepped forward and gave Aro her hand. "Would you do me the honor?"
I let my gaze wander until it landed on the other vampire again who winked. I smirked and then turned my attention back to Aro who was looking rather perturbed.
"Interesting. I see nothing. I wonder. . ." He turned his back, walking slightly back to his throne, "Let us see if she is immune to all our powers. Shall we, Jane?"
I hesitated for a fraction of an inch. Jane, of course, created pain with her mind. I did not want that to be used on Bella, but at the same time. . . I did not think that it would.
"No!" Edward protested, going to move in front of Bella when I stepped in front of Edward.
"Don't." I warned him. "Edward, stay calm and stay here."
Edward hesitated under my stern gaze and I raised an eyebrow. Jane turned her attention on Bella. Edward went to move and I put my hand on his shoulder. "Don't."
We waited, watching as Jane continued to gaze at Bella. Bella gazed back and nothing happened.
Aro started to laugh. I took it back. It was terribly creepy and I was really starting to dislike him. I let go of Edward's shoulder, moving back into the background.
"Remarkable." Aro said, clapping his hands together. Jane stared at him. "She confounds us all."
Aro turned to me, "And who are you?"
"Davina Michaelson." I replied.
"Ah yes, the Cullen mother." Aro said softly. "Carlisle's mate."
I rolled my eyes. "Not really, but sure."
"And does Edward have difficulty reading your mind?" Aro asked.
"No." I replied.
"Might I?" Aro asked, holding out his hand.
"I quite like my privacy, thank you."
"Mom." Edward hissed under his breath.
I wavered, glancing at him and then at Aro who looked intrigued.
If I was going to tell someone all of my deepest, darkest secrets, this vampire was the last person I wanted to know. Not to mention, Edward would be able to see everything as it flashed through Aro's mind.
It was uncomfortable feeling. Aro would know every moment of my life from the moment I was born to now. He would know about my relationship with Carlisle, what happened with my parents, and how I had nearly killed three different vampires using wooden stakes and a lighter.
"Edward, stay out of his head and mine." I said, holding out my hand.
Aro ignored it, stepping forward, his hands on either side of my face, pressing his lips to mine. I was shocked and froze. Memories flooded my mind. My first step, my fourth birthday party, playing in the ocean with Sam, my Uncle Josh greeting us at Fort Knox, Azim, my first kiss, the bombs, the death, the screaming, and everything else up until this moment.
Aro didn't let go of my hand for a very long time. It was cold, like all vampires hands, and there was a smoothness to it that suggested age. Almost soft.
We stared into each others' eyes before he finally let go. "You have one of the most traumatic lives I have ever seen." Aro whispered. "How do you handle it at such a young age?"
"I'm Davina Michaelson. I survive." I stated flatly.
"Strange, and your blood does not appeal to me, nor anyone else in this room." Aro murmured, almost to himself.
"Pretty sure that's a good thing." I said and I saw the man smile out of the corner of my eye. Felix on the other hand rolled his eyes.
"Indeed, although you were Carlisle's blood singer. . ." Aro said slowly.
"He has a theory that I'm one side of the spectrum for every vampire. Either the side that does crave my blood period or the side where I'm the blood singer. It's just lovely." I said sarcastically.
Aro smiled, bemused, "So what are we going to do with you now?"
"You already know what you are going to do, Aro." Marcus said from his throne, slouching like he didn't know what good posture was.
"They know to much. They are a liability." Caius said.
Well, so much for thinking he was good looking. I'd stick with the guy who seemed to like me.
"That's true." Aro said.
"Okay so, we're liabilities now." I stated, "But when we become vampires, that makes us not liabilities, right?"
Aro looked at me, "I did not realize you planned on becoming a vampire."
"Alice promised Bella to change her after we saved Edward from trying to die." I replied.
Edward shot me a look.
"And yourself?" Aro asked, raising an eyebrow.
I titled my head, thinking. "I told Carlisle to give me a few years. I wanted to be at least twenty five or older."
"And you're twenty now?"
"Almost twenty-one." I responded. "Coming April."
Aro tilted his head to the side, judging me. I looked at Alice, "You could show him."
Alice nodded, taking off her glove, extending her hand to Aro who took it in almost delight. I watched as Aro and Alice stared at each other. "Mesmerizing." Aro responded in an almost breathless whisper, "To see what you have seen. . . before it has happened." Aro moved in front of Bella, "Your gifts will make for an intriguing immortal." He caressed her cheek. I pursed my lips. I wondered what her gift was going to be.
"Go now." Aro said, backing away from us. "Make your preparations."
"Let us be done with this." Marcus said from his throne. "Heidi will arrive any moment." He stood up.
"Right, time to go." I said, hooking my arm through Alice's.
"Thank you for your visit." Marcus said to us.
Right, well at least he was polite.
"We will return the favor. I would advise that you follow through on your promise soon." Caius said, not rising from his throne. "We do not offer second chances."
Wow, just a ray of sunshine.
"Goodbye, my young friends." Aro said in delight to our backs as we exited the room.
"Nice fishing Heidi." The young man said as we passed by a tall vampire wearing a red dress and black gloves with heels. I felt sick, watching the people file past, especially when I saw that there were two children in the group.
"You have children in the group!" I protested as Edward and Alice led me and Bella faster and farther from the group.
The man looked at me, at first amused, and then almost apologetic. "It happens."
I swallowed hard as I heard the screams. Edward and Alice pushed us through the doors, blocking out the screams.
We went up the elevator.
"Which one are you?" I asked the man. "Santiago or Demetri?"
He looked just the faintest surprised that I knew the names and he said, "Demetri."
"Ah, the tracker." I said with a nod.
He smirked. "Indeed I am. And I think you would make a lovely vampire."
"I'm sure." I smirked.
He brushed my cheek lightly as the doors opened.
"Careful," I warned lightly. "I still bite."
He laughed lightly as I exited the elevator.
"Mom, you shouldn't flirt with him." Edward muttered.
"Yes, well as I am single and not seeing anyone, I have every right to flirt with whoever I feel like." I muttered.
Technically, the Volturi weren't bad people. I supposed if I did become a vampire, I could always come back here. I could see a life as part of the guard, specifically alongside Demetri. But then again, I don't think that would help with my attempts at redemption.
I knew all three of them would be curious about what Aro had meant about my life, but it wasn't any of their business. Edward was safe. Him and Alice would go back to Denali with their family, leaving us alone again.
I wondered if the wolves had caught Victoria yet, or if when we disappeared, she went too.
We caught another plane out of Florence- I had redone my red wig as I had taken it off once we'd landed in Florence the first time.
We landed in Rome and I called Sam.
Emily was the one who picked up, "Davina? Are you alright? Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything is fine. I'm on my way home. I need Sam to pick me up at the airport. Or any of the boys for that matter. We land early in the morning, I have no idea what time it is there right now. I just thought you should know."
"Okay, I'll pass along the message." Emily said, sounding exhausted.
"Thanks Em."
I hung up, leaving the bathroom and rejoining Edward, Alice, and Bella as we got ready to board the long flight from Rome to Atlanta.
I fell asleep during the flight as I was exhausted, dreaming about bombs, running, screaming, and vampires.
I woke up with a headache, feeling sicker than I had in days. I drank a sprite to keep it down. Once we landed in Atlanta, I hurried to the bathroom to throw up and once the plane from Atlanta to Seattle was ready to leave, I felt better.
I fell asleep on this flight as well, feeling well rested when I woke up as the flight landed.
Edward, Alice, and Bella were the first off the flight and then Jasper was there, standing in front of Alice.
Aw shit, the family was here.
I looked around quickly, ignoring the blond and red head in the corner. I couldn't deal with Carlisle right now.
"Davina!" I heard a familiar young voice call.
I broke out in a grin, seeing Seth, Jared, and Sam there. I ran over to them, hugging them all fiercely. "Hey guys."
"Why are you wearing a red wig?" Seth asked in confusion. I took it off, stuffing it in my bag along with my fake passport.
"No reason." I lied. "Are you ready to go home?"
"Sure." Sam said, glaring over my shoulder.
"Sam, ignore them." I muttered.
"Are you alright?" Jared asked in concern.
"Yep, just flirted with a few vampires, saved Edward's life, no big deal."
"Alright, well come on mom." Jared said.
"Wait," I paused, really taking in the fact that Seth was here with Sam. I looked from Seth to Sam and then poked Seth's right arm. "Do you have a tattoo there?"
"Oh yeah." Seth grinned, "It's honestly so awesome."
"What colour wolf are you?" I asked.
"Grey." Seth said excitedly. "Leah's one too."
"What!" I exclaimed.
Sam slung an arm around my shoulder, "You smell terrible."
"Thank you ugly." I muttered. "Come on, let's go."
Carlisle P.O.V.
My anxiety swelled as Davina stepped off the plane, looking more beautiful than ever. I felt better than I had in months and I took a moment to see just how sick she was. She was thin, the unhealthy kind of thin, and she didn't give us the time of day, heading straight for the wolves when she landed.
Alice and Edward hesitated, noting my reaction.
"She thinks you hate her." Alice said, sounding apologetic, glancing between Edward and myself. "I think. . . I think you have some things you need to tell both of them Edward."
Edward looked completely ashamed of himself, but was more focused on Bella than anything else, "Yeah, I will."
That wasn't comforting at all.
