I illustrated 100 ASoIaF Characters

" A Song of Ice and Fire" is a series that has become rather (in)famous for its depictions of violence, and abundance of s3x scenes .and while criticism can definitely be made for these, it's important that we dont end up overlooking the important life lessons, nor end up with wrong takeaways from the story.

you see, at its very heart , i believe ASOIAF is a story of the human experience, as well as a commentary about the twisted ways of this world ( set within a fantasy backdrop). being caught in the middle of loyalties, ambition, Reputation, vengeance, culture, faith, and familial acceptance . its themes like this along with complex and relatable characters that youll pity and root for in one scene, only for you to be appalled by and flinch at in the next scene, is what i find so appealing in this series.

Spectacle, Political Intrigue and Character Drama (all present in the story too btw) aside , its a story that really makes you think ,reflect , and learn upon. and i love it for that!

so today , i just wanna show my appreciation to arguably the best aspect of this series: The Characters . for over a year now, i have made fanart for 100 characters from the series. some are major pov characters. some iterally appear for only 1 chapter. but all help bring so much depth and color to this story!

Make no mistake, SEVEN and 3D are singing about the same thing. If SEVEN was in your face, 3D is subtle. But they are both just talking about sex here. Which is why it doesn't make sense to me why people are so upset??? As a person who likes Harlow and has heard his songs before, this did not shock me one bit. There is nothing wrong with this song. It is meaningless and shallow but guess what, thats the type of music the GP is listening to rn. I understand why Asians have an issue with this line

Besides physical affection, he likes to spoil you with gifts sometimes, like beautiful clothing or accessories if you're interested in these, or some treasures he finds from shipwrecks and convoys, or perhaps other kinds of trinkets that you like or that remind him of you.

I'm pretty sure I have depression among other issues but it's rather complicated to get a diagnosis and medical help because of some personal issues, so yeah that's fun lols.

Hello from the states! So pleased you enjoy the blog :D And what an interesting project. We're happy to help!

Of course, we have our Tumblr here. And since our posts aren't responding to actual requests for specific types of books, our reader's advisors just post about whatever they liked - so our posts are all personal recommendations from people who have read the books. Maybe it can be a reader's advisory tool for other librarians! Though they would have to contend with Tumblr's search function...

When we do need to find a rec for someone looking for a good read with specific criteria, and assuming we don't have a good rec off the top of our heads, that's when we pull out the toolkit.

The main tool we use is Novelist Plus. It's an EBSCO tool - here's their product site . It's basically a really specific search engine. You can find author readalikes and even search based on themes like fake relationship, isekai, magical girl, marriage of convenience, etc etc - basically AO3 tags for published novels! Patrons can use Novelist Plus to search by themselves, but many of them do find it difficult to use. Our staff are trained, though, and it's a good tool for when someone asks for a genre or trope we're unfamiliar with.

We also use fantasticfiction.com because it's the easiest way to find info about series. They keep it up to date, and that's the most important thing with a reader's advisory tool!

Those are the main ones staff mentioned. Of course we'll also take a look at Goodreads, Storygraph, and general search engine results if we need to.

- zami: a new spelling of my name by audre lorde - an “autobiomythography” & maybe thee most formative book for me, in terms of wlw reading. i read it for university and it changed me as a person, changed the way i look at loving women. it’s beautiful

- nightwood by djuna barnes - if you like the more unsettling aspects of picnic at hanging rock, something lynchian and modernist, this is a dark and heavily abstract lesbian novel which i really love

- our wives under the sea - a really poignant and lovely soft sci-fi depiction of a wlw relationship, themes of grief, identity, loss etc. some compare it to annihilation though expect much less science fiction

- her body and other parties by carmen maria machado - a lovely (probably my favourite!) collection of short stories which often are wlw-centric or have a vibe. stunning prose in general

- hera lindsay bird by hera lindsay bird - wlw poetry, very fun and contemporary, what i call self-aware poetry

- mary oliver’s poetry!!!

- for biographies, anything about tove jansson….

- anything by virginia woolf will fit the not explicitly stated vibe feeling - mrs dalloway has a really wistful lesbian undercurrent, orlando is a love letter to vita sackville-west. etc. etc.

movies:

- persona (ingmar bergman) - thee movie. it’s Not explicitly stated, it’s feverish and desolate, but it’s both intensely homoerotic and a searing exploration of identity, existential dread etc.

- mulholland drive (david lynch) - again, unsettling vibes. not even gonna elaborate on it - it’s a david lynch - but it’s a must-see

- passing (rebecca hall) - a moody, poignant and beautiful adaptation of nella larsen’s novella (which is on my to-read list) about a relationship between two women

- the favourite (yorgos lanthimos) - recently rewatched with a friend, no notes. a bizarre, obsessive, thrilling story. rachel weisz is to die for in it

- kajillionaire (miranda july) - a tender and strange (affectionate) depiction of a bond between two women in unexpected circumstances

- thoroughbreds (cory finley) - what if murder was homoerotic, what if murder was a metaphor. in a way this is about every codependent friendship between girls that has ever veered towards obsession

- vita & virginia (chanya button) - a biopic abt virginia woolf and vita sackville-west specifically, people have very mixed feelings on it but i personally love it to bits.

tv shows:

- black sails - anne and max’s storyline in black sails is the most visceral and lovely wlw story i’ve seen in tv or film… there are specific tws i would heed for max’s arc in the first season which i’d be happy to elaborate on, but their story is beautiful

- first season of killing eve is still unmatched 😔 second is still quite nice, if not as good. third is hm. the ending scene has whimsy to it. never watch the fourth.

things my gf loves that i still haven’t read/seen:

- portrait of a lady on fire - i just know it will Get to me so i’m waiting for the right mood to watch it

- this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar & max gladstone - same reasoning!

things i’ve started but haven’t had a chance to finish yet:

- little blue encyclopaedia (for vivian) by hazel jane plante - a beautiful (but sad, and also about grieving, hence it’s taking me a while) trans wlw story. quaint and quiet and wistful.

I heard from a little birdie that you were a Secret Saturdays expert, well the series has come back under my radar and I was dying to know what you think about the show, and the fandom, also how do you feel about the property now? Do you thik it would be more popular if it had aired now rather than in '08? Loooooove your blog btw, so glad I found you! 🤞

So as a kid I didn't get to watch much of it due to airing problems (The struggles of being a New Zealand kid lol), but I had remembered a few episodes from my childhood, mainly the Owlman episode. I also have this vague memory of knowing the Kur/Zak twist because I swear I saw a ad that gave that away, haha. I started rewatching it after hearing it had a crossover with Ben 10 after I was getting back into that series too, and fell in love with the series as I had the means to finally watch it. I love the lore, the writing, the pacing, it's just a really solid show with a great story to follow, topics about morals, destiny, humanity and so on that I felt were handled in a good way. Not to mention the fact I am a sucker for family themed stuff in stories, and the Saturdays are a really good example. They love each other, and you get different moments between them, but they're also not perfect, and generally just feel real. I still really love the series, and have been working on doing for stuff for it. And while the fandom is small, I see some great stuff from it from time to time, and I'm hoping more might be introduced to the series via the Breakdown with Kuro. And I very much do think it would do well in this era in terms of fans, given a lot of people are really into cryptids and mythology, something many kids grew up with and now getting to express it more often. Not to mention all the culture stuff they talk about in the series. Though given how animated series are currently being treated, it would also have a rough time getting on it's feet sadly, just cause it's the currently climate for such shows. And thank you!

There's a few things that go into it!

Firstly, I have the advantage of, according to my friends, before I read any of his stuff my style was already kind of Chuck adjacent. I tend to be very rhythmic in my writing, I do like to have little repetitions, I like fun descriptions — similar to how he focuses on things reading aloud well, and favoring offbeat descriptions, his little ritual words, etc. That's my biggest secret, I just already wrote pretty close to it without knowing, so I didn't have a whole lot to change. Similar dog learning new tricks sort of deal. That said, there IS stuff I actively think about, especially with regard to character voice:

There's some things I'd call window dressing — minor changes that make it more recognizable. This would be things such as: the narrator does not get put in quotes, slips into 2nd person, using a rhythm where the dialogue tag goes in front (generally Tyler says, blah, not blah, Tyler says). That also makes it feel more active and present. I also like to outright include the occasional line from the book as a referential repetition, or a spoof on a line, I think that's the fun of fanfiction. But if those lines stand out glaringly it can be a sign you either need to change your style or maybe you're just trying to stick it somewhere it doesn't belong.

There's some bigger things: sentence variation is another thing I've invested pretty heavily in on my own and something I highly recommend any writer get in the habit of, but in trying to match his character voice I do consciously feel for when something is getting too long, specifically. The key with Chuck is he can have long sentences, but they're made out of short ideas. Long sentences often become grammatically incorrect as they're separate ideas jammed together for rhythm and sense.

He also shies away from adjectives; I kind of ignore this because I love a good adjective, but I've learned from it by making sure each one is impactful in its own way. Avoid superfluousness, keep things moving. He also shies away from stereotypical descriptions, I enjoyed building my confidence making weird ones. It's something I'm keeping going forward.

Another thing with his style is he loves fun facts. Fortunately I also love fun facts. To do those you have to keep it relevant, symbolic/metaphorical, purposeful, and simple. You can totally get complex, but only using simple building blocks. It's not to show everyone you know something, it's to build a little cliff to push the narrator off of. People don't need the detailed rockwork.

He often has little... almost like an aside? The narrator will ramble or think about something else for a little bit before getting back to the present. That shaky hold on the Now contrasts with how action focused everything is and allows moments of rest even if its still action.

As for character voice, the narrator; by following the above, you can get most of it, and then remembering his general view of the world to keep things in theme. He shouldn't be happy. He should have a lot of surpressed rage. Etc. Good character writing starts with a good understanding of the character, and that's real important for whoever your pov is. Always important to check if stuff passes the "he wouldn't fucking say that" test. When I have dialogue for him, it's almost an extension of his thoughts. I mentally read it to myself with the dull affect Ed Norton used for the movie monologue, really that shit was perfect. I usually can't keep a voice in my head like that but that one... yeah.

Tyler on the other hand I have to be pretty conscious about, sometimes I'll go back through the book and read some of his lines. He tends to be very direct. Very rarely uses names, it's tempting to use psycho boy or ikea boy all the time but it's the devil speaking. Tyler is direct, always serious even when he's laughing, his statements are not mitigated at all, if he is saying a pet name it is for its own impact not to soften any sort of statement. Rhythmically I find this directness difficult sometimes, but the 'Tyler says' dialogue tag makes it feel like a religious call and response on the narrators part and serves to soften things — but have that be the narrator's perspective and choice, not Tyler's. It's pretty heavily repeated in the book. Tyler also requires a "He would not fucking say that" test and I think I've gotten better at his dialogue over time (ex: retroactively, Tyler's dialogue in my psychoactive fish story s u c k s. I mean, it works, but I didn't really have a strong grasp on him at the time and while the actions sound like him, the words and delivery don't. Now though I think my snippets and the dildo fic are pretty strong!) A lot of it is just practice and tuning your ear. Reference the original material and try to dissect it.

I'm gonna tag @lurkingshan, @bengiyo, @grapejuicegay, and @neuroticbookworm for awareness as I write this, because I've relied on them for background on omegaverse, and I am in no way a fully-informed historian on this sub-genre and its fan fiction origins. And if any omegaverse fans/historians out there are reading this -- I do very much encourage your feedback, as I'm here to learn!

The short answer to your question, Starry, is no, ha. I have been strongly encouraged to NOT add it to the official list/syllabus, but I do plan on giving Pit Babe a heavy honorable mention in my Old GMMTV Challenge wrap-up posts later this year. Here's why.

Because I'm still so new to BL -- what I'm trying to get/understand, from a macro contextual perspective, is how Asian BL became the dramatic genre home to this sub-genre, besides the fact that BL conveniently asks for same-sex male couplings in its art. Are there omegaverse works, outside of fan fiction AND outside of Asian BL, that exist? I don't think so? But I'm not sure, I'm not an expert here.

Another reason why I'm gunshy about omegaverse is its underpinnings in misogyny (the link is only a list of personal blog essays, but ones worth scrolling through), which is not something I'd necessarily want to celebrate vis à vis the OGMMTVC. (@grapejuicegay, you've helped me to understand the history of this.)

One question that I've tossed to friends -- and, funnily, I ask this as a cishet mom with my rights intact -- is whether or not a male/male pregnancy is something that actually gets celebrated from an LGBTQ+-rights perspective. If I am correct (and I may not be, so fandom, please chime in here), omegaverse works have often ignored the potential reality of trans-male pregnancies. This strikes me as quite the oversight from an LGBTQ+ rights perspective -- and as a mom, I'm very aware that at least in America, health care options are improving for trans men who would like to explore pregnancy. So.... could we celebrate this potentiality in art, generally speaking?

I don't know that omegaverse is the answer to that question -- likely that's a heavy no. But there's a lot that I don't know about omegaverse, the macro conversations about rights implications, and so on.

What I do know is that the misogynistic overtones of omegaverse's origins concern me enough to not get to into this at the moment. But I am absolutely paying attention to the hype around Pit Babe, and would love to know if Pit Babe is actually going there by way of potentially engaging this conversation about misogyny... or not.

Starry, thanks for bringing this up! And I welcome thoughts from around the way, because I know that Pit Babe is bringing this up for a lot of folks. I'm hoping to hear from some folks, because I'd love to refer back to this conversation when the OGMMTVC projects ends (...for now!) later this year.
