#also the romance choices one is complicated because on one hand you don't get these weird fast-tracked relationships you always get now

Idk how to say this but I am not as bothered about whatever is going to transpire between Daryl and Isabelle (bcoz for one thing - we know what is going to happen in the end- and for another - I honestly believe that the male execs are not at all confident abt their vision for these two as they would like to be and the whole thing would prolly boil down to ambiguity and ultimately- it will fall upon the viewers to dissect how Daryl feels - the Caryl fandom especially is really adept at reading into storylines - even stupid ones) None of this is good by any means. It cheapens the integrity of all the characters involved. It blatantly insults and reduces female characters - I believe that Isabelle deserves better. That a story should hold space for multiple female characters. Also - I am worried about putting the fate and the story of one the best female characters on TV (Carol) in the hands of someone who has proven that he can't be trusted to handle them with care. Reading S2 reviews - I am sort of reassured that Carol is treated well enough in the story - which I believe - has a LOT to do with Melissa McBride's input. Going forward - it is going to be more difficult bcoz once we have dealt with old traumas - we do need to evolve these characters and make sure they don't stay stagnant. I don't believe Zabel has the chops to do that.
sorry for that rant. I am just really frustrated.
What I worry about is the way all of this bts stuff amongst the male execs is going to impact the Caryl dynamic. Whatever the antis may think - and while McReedus has insane chemistry - I do believe that the romantic energy is generated between them by a lot of their acting choices (bcoz the underlying story is teasing a romance). What happens to all that when a romance is completely off the table? When AMC has been pushing this friendship narrative down our throats in a very evident bid to do damage control - the insecure/defensive promo that we have been getting last few weeks is proof enough that Caryl was always more than friends?
The problems were already glaringly obvious from the very beginning. the fact that Melissa isn't billed equally for a season where she is proclaimed to be the major focus? It is not even about Caryl going canon for me anymore. I love Melissa and Carol way too much for me to give up yet but I treasure the Caryl bond primarily bcoz they have always been each other's everything. it is truly a bond that evades definition. Both Carol and Daryl doesn't have what they have with each other with anyone. THAT IS A CANON FACT. I don't think I can watch that dynamic that I treasure so much being butchered - s11 was painful enough - I can't go through all of that and more again.
Going to watch s2 and then my further commitment will depend entirely upon how the characters are treated and their dynamic is portrayed?
It sucks that I am dreading watching Carol and Daryl back together on screen.
been here just for a few months but the way AMC has been fumbling with this promo - have you guys always experienced this whiplash or is it a new thing?
I’m going to include big spoilers in my response, so proceed with caution ⚠️
I respect your opinion, but I disagree with you on the point about Daryl’s and Isabelle’s arc. It seems like the male EPs (Zabel, Nicotero, Gimple) are overly confident that an explicit romance between their male hero and a younger blonde nun who accused Daryl of being like his abusive father just for trying to go home to his family will attract a larger male audience and they aren’t sparing any feelings with it because we aren’t their ideal audience anyway. To them, we’re just a bunch of “hysterical” shippers whose POV’s don’t matter and we can just take their crumbs. AMC is a bit more complicated, but I’ll get to them later.
Daryl and the nun kiss in 202, so there’s little to no room for us to dissect how Daryl is feeling. Isabelle’s death is the furthest thing from a relief because 1) it reduces her character down to man pain like you said and 2) from what I’m gathering, it completely overshadows Caryl’s reunion and then their entire arc. We get another hug that does absolutely nothing to elevate their relationship and then Carol has to face that Daryl didn’t need her to rescue him because he found a new family and become his emotionally supportive friend to help him through his grief of a lost love interest he’s known for a few months. It almost feels like it’s going to be a retread of Beth’s death, only worse. We know how Greg Nicotero views both of those relationships and to be blunt, the man needs to stop projecting his creepy fetishes onto Daryl and making it our problem 🤢
The way the story is framed, it’s not even about Caryl at all. They’re the relationship we’re the most invested in and yet all the emotional weight is given to a highly problematic relationship that developed over a dozen ish short episodes (compared to Caryl’s decade+ of emotional depth) and it’s all for nothing too. Zabel just resets Daryl like the hokey network procedural writer he is. And Caryl fans are rewarded for their years-long loyalty by getting more ambiguous subtext to analyze? Really?
I think you’re spot on about Melissa though. The reason she’s the bright spot of the season, the reason Carol’s individual arc feels true, and her spiritual connection to Daryl stays alive is because Melissa influenced all of that. She’s shown us time and time again that she understands her character so deeply and respects her fans. It really breaks my heart because I think she had a beautiful story in mind for Carol and she deserves all the support in the world, but as I’ve said many times, if damage is done to the character who has been written as her soulmate for over a decade, damage is also done to her. And I can’t watch that. I can’t watch the destruction of my favorite characters and my favorite relationship and put money in AMC’s pockets for gaslighting me. Retconning Caryl’s relationship into a platonic friendship is their way of protecting themselves from backlash. “Daryl isn’t emotionally cheating because he and Carol have always been besties?” “We didn’t mislead you. We told you they were friends, so you dumb shippers are doing this to yourselves. Please watch our slop anyways ✌️” They’re even trying to shift responsibility to Melissa by making her answer the shipping questions despite the fact that it’s Daryl’s arc throwing a wrench in everything and I expect that to continue at NYCC/Palyfest. It’s completely unethical and it’s backfiring.
Zabel cannot write for Daryl and Carol. He keeps showing us that he doesn’t understand their bond nor does he value it. A couple of the reviews mentioned it felt like Carol was shoehorned into certain aspects of the story, which tracks with what I already knew—that he and the other EPs think she’s hindering the story they want to tell about men doing manly things. That’s why they try so hard to challenge her significance to Daryl’s story and that is not going to change just because they’re moving to another location. Somebody like that should not have power to decide her trajectory. Fuck whatever he has planned for S3. I don’t want it. I still want Caryl and I still want to see them get the stories they deserve, but that’s only going to happen if we get a new showrunner who respects them and respects their fans. In case it needs to be said, Gimple is not that guy either (he can fake his enthusiasm on SM all he wants 🖕🖕🖕). A complete rebranding of the show to something that honors the characters and gives Melissa her dues (equal billing, title, etc) is the only way I’m tuning in now🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t have the emotional capacity to sit through S2, but I will be here, speaking up, to make sure Melissa gets all the necessary praise and those assholes can’t blame her if the show tanks.
I’ve only been here a few years and there’s been a lot of turn over at AMC even just in that time (I kid you not, all of our problems can be traced back to Josh Sapan leaving. He loved Caryl and Melissa). That being said, I cannot for the life of me understand why any of the guys over there (even the misogynistic ones) would approve of the Daryl/Isabelle arc after the PR disaster that Leah caused not even that long ago and at least for that, the arc tied back to romantic Caryl and we weren’t subjected to any uncomfortable physical intimacy. Why the fuck would they make the same mistake? Why the fuck do they have to spend more time cleaning up messes than avoiding the mess altogether at every fucking opportunity they had (and they had a lot). I just don’t get it. And I’m so tired of taking the abuse.

Honestly, if Leigh really wanted Alina to have an ending where she's sapped of her powers and decides to go back to her normal orphanage life, she shouldn't have decided that Alina should be the protagonist of a trilogy dealing with the genocide of a group of people who are being killed or worse because of their powers. We got 3 books of Alina not really wanting to do anything to help the Grisha (things get much worse for them after Darkling dies). Not to mention, we got that whole power is +
a corrupting influence, except Leigh mixed that messaging up with parts of the books where Grisha who didn't use their powers were wasting away and very, very sick (wasting sickness). Also we saw Grisha in Novyi Zem with a very limited, incomplete understanding of their powers in one of the Six of Crows books I think. The fact that Alina was healthier when she used her powers and then was demonized for having powers in the later books annoys me. The series would have been better without the weird romances and if the Darkling was the protagonist. Because he's the sort of protagonist a story like this needed. I don't think every single protagonist needs to be badass, but in a story about genocide and a corrupt monarchy and a complicated political landscape, an effective protagonist should want to learn about all of those things, and they should have a more active role in the story. Which the Darkling was like.
Tumblr media
I don't think there's much to add.
Alina might've been a very good protagonist, if she didn't cling to her smallness so badly. Or if she were made to abandon it and instead of slipping back into obscurity, accepted her role of bringer of social change.
Her butchering at the end of TGT is just another piece into gruesome tapestry that is being a Grisha in Grishaverse.
Aleksander is a main character for completely different genre, but to be fair, so are the topics introduced in the books. Braindead YA audience isn't able to handle him as the wrong choice of love interest, can you imagine the drama if he weren't constantly shat on?
I've encountered another, slightly more palatable suggestion- writing S&B!Genya as the protagonist. She's clever, active, more situation-aware and willing to take drastic actions. On the other hand she never left Os Alta, or even the Palaces, so there's room for a little bit of naiveté in practical situations, learning and growth waiting for her in the big wide world.

Our Dating Sim Eps 7 & 8 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
Last week, our boys finally began dating and unpacking what happened between them. It was glorious. I've always wanted to see a second chance couple start to fall back into their former comfortable dynamics and shift how they felt with new perspective. Also, Shin Ki Tae is so forthright about his feelings that I love him the most. Now, we stare down an external complication that may pull them apart again.
Episode 7
I'm really glad we checked in with the other high school friends. It's normal for boys to try and turn Wan's painful disappearance into some sort of game to cover how hurt Ki Tae was. I like that one of them hasn't forgotten how upset Ki Tae was.
Also loving the internal monologue that Ki Tae is afraid to confront the disappearance because he's afraid of Wan disappearing again.
Episode 7: At the Crossroads of Choice
I appreciate this guy following up with Wan for this opportunity now that circumstances have changed. While he's not wrong about the apparent temporary nature of Wan's role in this company, it's still kinda lame to be like, "You're good enough for us now."
Wan holding on to a green pillow as they cuddle, while privately wrestling with the offer, is not lost on me.
Ki Tae is so valid for being direct about wanting Wan to stay.
I get Wan worrying about what might happen, and I really just love Ki Tae so much. Like how often do we spend hours of shows with boys not just saying they're afraid of their partner leaving them again?
Unlike GAP, this show is using Dutch angles well to highlight how uncomfortable both of them are right now.
Seeing Shin Ki Tae go through losing Wan again hurts.
This is just so good. I feel like Ki Tae has been through counseling with how clearly he understands his feelings.
Oh, I really like using the fail state pressure if you don't make a choice.
Episode 8
Episode 8: The Conclusion of the Game
My girl Sunny knows shit is going on, and she is going to meddle!
The bit about searching for meaning in creating art with the PD is amusing.
On the real, I'm glad Wan is making the choice for Ki Tae and didn't tell him about it before making it.
Oh, the log of the moments he missed Kit Tae got me.
Yes! We are back on the roof where things broke! I'm going to explode!!
The gays are really demolishing the rooftop kiss these days.
Ki Tae's hands are rather vascular.
One year later and they still aren't sharing the bed!
Okay! I saw that butt pat!
I think I liked a time skip to show a couple settling into a dynamic.
Oh I liked the final stage imagining what they could have had.
Final Verdict: 10, This Show Has Everything. This is exactly what I want out of a short run show. It has characters with clear notices and goals. It has a conflict that is easy to follow, and delves directly into its core conceits with heart and a sense of humor. Shin Ki Tae may be one of my favorite characters of the year, and that's with everything we watched in winter! They even kiss with gusto! Absolutely stellar experience, and my new standard for optimistic second chance romance.

OBEY ME! CHARACTERS AND TAYLOR SWIFT SONGS I ASSOCIATE THEM WITH
listen i need this as self assurance and indulgence. will include all dateables, mephisto, thirteen, and raphael. will also include any honorable mentions!
I'll link a playslist with all the songs at the end for funsies hehe
-
LUCIFER
False God (Lover)
I know heaven's a thing; I go there when you touch me, honey, hell is when I fight with you.
I was debating between this one or I Can See You from Speak Now TV, but I feel like the religious imagery in this one really sold me
hon. mention: Invisible String, Don't Blame Me
MAMMON
Paper Rings (Lover)
I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings
/
I want to drive away with you, I want your complications too, I want your dreary Mondays
I think Mammon's definitely the type to propose with a paper ring either while he's drunk or as an impromptu proposal (of course, he'll still buy you an actual ring) but it's kind of a cute contrast from his greed image
hon. mention: New Year's Day
LEVIATHAN
Glitch (Midnights)
I thought we had no chance, and that's romance, let's dance
This one is definitely not just because of the song's theming 🤞 Even the first line (we were supposed to be just friends) is a direct parallel to his character song 😭 (which, fun fact, is my favorite out of all the songs we have... That and Telepathy.)
hon. mention: Tied Together with a Smile
SATAN
cowboy like me (evermore)
I've got some tricks up my sleeve, takes one to know one
You're a cowboy like me, never wanted love, just a fancy car
Satan was the hardest to pick for, I think. Originally I wanted to go for something like. idk. Sweeter Than Fiction? Which to be fair could be a good pick too. But I feel like cowboy like me encapsulates his "i've finally met my match, so i'm never letting go" kind of thing
hon. mention: Sweeter Than Fiction, I Think He Knows
ASMODEUS
Gorgeous (reputation)
You should take it as a compliment that I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk, you should think about the consequence of your magnetic field being a little too strong
This one was the first one I thought of LMAO I think people might say it's a pretty shallow pick but it's exactly why I went with it anyway - he seems like a very shallow demon and his aesthetic is definitely what first draws you in, but if you don't bother trying to get to know him, he'll only ever be gorgeous and nothing else. Do you get what I'm going for here. I hope you do.
hon. mention: Style, Bejeweled
BEELZEBUB
Stay Stay Stay (Red, Taylor's Version)
You carry my groceries and now I'm always laughing, and I love you because you have given me no choice but to stay
/
All those times you didn't leave, it's been occuring to me, I'd like to hang out with you for my whole life
I take back what I said about Satan. BEEL was the hardest to pick for 😵‍💫😭 tbh this pick went purely off of vibes and not necessarily any deeper connection. How dare I call myself a Beel simp. (Someone help me out here i'm dying)
BELPHEGOR
Run (Red, Taylor's Version)
Darling, let's run, run from it all
We can go where our eyes can take us, go where no one else is, run
I think I gravitated towards this song for Belphie because of the themes of escapism. Like all he wants to do is be with you and no one else (and maybe Beel) but as long as he's with you, anywhere is home
hon. mention: Untouchable
DIAVOLO
Enchanted (Speak Now, Taylor's Version)
This is me praying that this was the very first page, not where the storyline ends, my thoughts will echo your name until I see you again.
He was so fun to think for because he definitely has this almost naive, fairytale charm when it comes to romance, I think. Like he's definitely the type to reference fairytale romances with prince charming and sweeping you off your feet and all that. I think.
hon. mention: Today Was a Fairytale, gold rush
BARBATOS
Dancing With Our Hands Tied (reputation)
I could've spent forever with your hands in my pockets, picture of your face in an invisible locket, you said there was no one in the world that could stop it
I was divided between this one and Timeless, but went with dwoht bc the vibes felt right. On-the-low sutuationship-relationship yet always craving their presence and intimacy? Yeah sign me up
hon. mentions: Timeless, Haunted
SOLOMON
Sweet Nothing (Midnights)
Outside, they're push and shoving, you're in the kitchen humming, all that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing
note: do NOT let him do shit in the kitchen
I picked this one because I think out of all of them, I associate Solomon with domesticity the most. I think he'd be one to crave for that too, and that all he wants is to go home after a long day to see you.
hon. mention: Ours, Our Song
SIMEON
Treacherous (Red, Taylor's Version)
Your name has echoed through my mind and I just think you should, think you should know, that nothing safe is worth the drive
Oh Simeon, the most un-angel angel (or ex-angel?) to ever exist. I originally wanted to go for something a bit more sensual for him, but I think Treacherous encapsulates his inner conflict of where he stands as an angel, his love for the brothers, and his love for you.
hon. mention: So It Goes...
MEPHISTOPHELES
Electric Touch (Speak Now, Taylor's Version)
All I know is this could either break my heart or bring it back to life, got a feeling your electric touch could fill this ghost town up with life
And I want you now, wanna need you forever, in the heat of your electric touch
Listen. Mephisto feels like a slowburn which was why I chose this song exactly. The uncertainty, the hope, the longing, but with a sprinkle of denial and starvation. The overthinking. YEAHHHH BABYYY IM GOING TO LOSE IT (<- has the unfortunate trait of being a mephisto simp)
hon. mentions: Cruel Summer, Afterglow
THIRTEEN
Wonderland (1989)
Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds? Didn't it all seem new and exciting? I felt your arms twisting around me, I should've slept with one eye open at night
Oh picking a song for her was fun. I also got stuck between two songs but chose Wonderland just bc I felt it suited her better. There's an air of mystery, skepticism, madness, longing... you name it
hon. mention: Message in a Bottle
RAPHAEL
Snow on the Beach (Midnights)
This scene feels like what I once saw on a screen, I searched aurora borealis green, I've never seen someone lit from within, blurring out my periphery
Okay this one feels like a stretch but also I'm half projecting because Raph is my favorite undateable LMFAO I just think his. Distance(?) makes it so it's almost magical that he gets drawn in. y'know. Almost like a once in a lifetime thing.
hon. mention: Dress, Superman
And that's all of them! I'm aware I didn't include Luke and although I still could include him with a more platonic/familial song, I went into this with like. Romance in my brain so. Sorry Luke ur still my bff don't worry.
There's also a distinct lack of debut, fearless, and folklore i'm so sorry i didnt mean it 😭
Anyways if you have any songs you also associate with them, I'd love to hear it!!
I made a playlist here!

Your writing is absolutely incredible. I love the way you write characters, it's really realistic and refreshing. Do you have any advice for writing such realistic characters?
thank you!
i look back on my early fanfiction and cringe at how jilted and unrealistic the dialogue was.
one thing i notice about some stories is how obvious the author is being like sometimes you can read a dialogue and you know the author wants you to feel some kind of way or wants you to romance this character and im definitely guilty of that in terms of the emotion i try to pull as people read, but sometimes it can really ruin the realism.
for example, there's been many times that i write a romantic choice for MC to say to orion and i want orion to say a certain thing in return because im like "omg this is the most romantic line ever someone shower me in flowers this is going to BANG theyre going to love this" and then my logical part of my brain is like "orion would never say this..." and i have to delete it and put something that aligns more with his character.
it's also nice to remember that people are not static. we move as we speak, we think, sometimes we need to pause, react, scratch our nose lol and i think adding action, no matter how small it may be, adds to making them feel a bit more real. sometimes conversations get derailed, people cut each other off, sometimes we get too passionate. it's rare that people have an actual like... straightforward back and forth where they know exactly what they're going to say next and they always wait exactly 3 seconds for the person to finish, you know?
for example:
"Wait." She raises a hand to cut you off, making a baffled face. "What?"
"Wait," she says. "What?"
Even without context, the first one at least gives you a better idea of how she feels about whatever she just heard.
what helps me is also saying the dialogue aloud! it helps me actually listen to the convo and sometimes i realize it sounds off. also, tone and and how people speak is very much dependent on the setting and story. MC isn't going to talk like a 20th-century aristocrat, while the 20th-century aristocrat isn't going to talk like MC. I am actually a bit more of a flowery writer than I am in the game, but flowery writing and long-winded, overly complicated metaphors just don't fit when it's supposed to be MC's monologue, so I have to dial it back for realism purposes!
This probably doesn't help, but thinking like this is what helped me brush up my dialogue better. I used to write like this:
"Oh," she said.
He smiled. "Yeah."
"Can we go to the store now?" she asked.
"No." He shakes his head. "I don't want to."
"Okay," she said. "I will go later then."
"Okay."
Terrible lmao

im glad!

Paradise (spread out with a butter knife) -- slowburn soulmates au where friendship is magic (or the one where Peter and Wade are literal soulmates but don't realize it for literal years because they're literal idiots)
The Little Barnacle -- Peter panics and botches Wade's proposal by proposing first like the babbling disaster man he is. He also turned out hella aro and this was his choice.
GwenMJ (Gwen Stacy/Michelle Jones)
michelle.mp3 -- Michelle breaks up with Peter and retreats to her grandma's house in the country to lick her wounds and meets Gwen, her insufferable neighbor who also happens to be the drummer and songwriter who upended her perfectly adequate life and is apparently back for more.
Parkner (Peter Parker/Harley Keener)

Heart (in hand) Home (in you) - 2.5k - Harley-centric sick fic
An Insignificant Problem - 1.2k - De-aged!Peter; Fed-up!Harley
Wouldn't Dream of It - 2.3k - Harley-centric alien goo induced trip down memory lane
The Human Kind - 3.7k - Spidey and Laddie play hide and seek :) (mind the tags!)
Undercover? I thought you said under covers... - 3.7k - what it says on the tin ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Peter, no - 3.4k - Peter is an awful outdoorsman. Harley is in love with him.
Rhythm and Blues - 1.3k - Flash POV! He's stuck late at school and sees something he isn't supposed to.
No Need to Rush - 5.3k - It's simple: Harley loves Peter. Yet complicated: Peter loves Harley.
Second Chances for Second Guessers - 3.7k - Peter is a flighty little whimp afraid of falling in love

The Devil is a Hopeless Romantic - 2k - tried to write angst. it's only okay
Completely and utterly devoid of sex appeal - 1.7k - Peter has the hots for Harley when he wears a certain outfit. Unfortunately it's his work uniform. And they work together.
Fake Romance Crap - 3.4k - sure he fake married me an hour ago, but do you think he likes me?
Apeshit - 2.1k - A Freak Out 'Verse one-shot written for the prompt: You know what, maybe they ARE tired of being nice. Maybe they DO wanna go apeshit.
adventures with hair dye and feelings — In Space! - 8.7k - 5 times Harley and Peter don’t kiss +1 time they do (in space!) Written for the combined prompts: 8) every single kiss so far has been a disaster but it's really funny and 46) don't have a one night stand with your coworker on the spaceship
Put in the Work - 54.7k - Rated M - fka the nasa au, now with minimal nasa (sorry). Harley built his whole life around two things: his daughter and his career at NASA. It's nothing but bad luck that he's laid off at the same time Hazel is pushing for independence. To cope, he falls back on his usual stress-relief, hotel sex with a hot stranger, but bad luck arrives in threes and it's definitely bad luck to fall in love with your one-night stand. If only he had a friend to vent to other than his sister, his daughter, and his strange quasi-friendship with Spider-Man via twitter…
Come on, take a joyride - 6.8k - 5 times Harley takes Peter for a ride +1 time Peter takes Harley
Free Pass - 9k - Rated E - a smutty New Year's Eve one-shot that got plot in it somehow...
another time, a difference place (I have loved you before) - ??? - In-progress (I'm posting as I go for once) - Endgame parkner fix it fic. Peter and Harley were together inside the soul stone. Unfortunately, neither of them remember anything and these frequent bouts of deja vu are getting weird.
Coming Up...
Baseball Smut - Rated E - parkner one-shot. Baseball uniforms are sexy, okay?
Your Mom Freaked Out - ??? - An addition to the Freak Out 'Verse that occurs sometime before the final scene of You're Freaking Out's epilogue. Harley gets blasted with temporal rays when Peter and Tony's time machine experiment goes wrong. It's just his luck that he wakes up handcuffed with Officer Benjamin Parker sitting at his bed side...
Not Spider-Man 4: Bring it on Home (working title) - ??? (LONG) - Gen fic (no romantic parkner), Harley-centric, trans ftm!Harley, canon compliant, post NWH - Harley built his own Iron Man armor and he uses it Robin Hood style to keep Rose Hill from blinking out on the map. Abbie thought she was helping by sneaking off to meet with reporter Betty Brandt and her photographer, Peter Parker, to shed some light on the dire situation in small towns like Rose Hill post-blip and the extremes people like her brother go to to keep people fed and healthy. But getting kidnapped is rarely considered helpful.
Spider-Man 4: Bring it on Home - ??? - Peter/Michelle - Sequel to Not SM4: BioH - Michelle POV (maybe with some Peter POV too--i'll decide when I actually get to writing it hah) -- Inspired by the events of Not SM4, Peter sets out to Boston get his friends back. Meanwhile, Michelle is trying to solve the mystery of why she and Ned have gaping holes in their memories. Ned has it worse than she does and has the therapy and medical bills to prove it, which is all the more reason for her to get to the bottom of this before his episodes get any worse. She's positive she could have solved it by now if not for the universe throwing constant distractions in her face--like the cute guy that recently started frequenting the shop where she works. Tag Game: This or That Writer's Edition
Dusting off a very old tag game that has been in my drafts for like 3 years now! At this point I don't remember who tagged me, but to whoever it was, thank you all the same!
*note to whoever wants to play: you don't have to write explanations if you don't want to. I just like to do it because I am incapable of being concise and just leaving things be.
1. historical or futuristic
A few years ago, I stumbled upon and discovered my love for historical fiction — historical romance, specifically — and I have been absolutely obsessed with it since.
On the other hand, I'm not a fan of futuristic settings and I've never had much interest in it. It's just not a genre that I'm personally into.
2. the opening or closing chapter
There's something poetic about endings. In my opinion, I think that they're the most meaningful, symbolic and important chapter in the book because it's often where you really get the true meaning and message of the story.
3. light+fluffy or dark+gritty
Mm, I'm personally not a fan of this particular choice because I'm not particularly into either option. I don't believe that something dark has to be gritty, or that gritty has to be dark, and I also think that realism is often conflated with being "gritty and dark" when that is not always the case. (And of course, I see a lot of people look down upon stories that aren't "gritty dark realism" and that is a pet peeve that I have). I also don't have much patience for things that are light and fluffy because I find them to be a bit over the top and too much for the most part.
If I had to choose it would be dark and gritty, but I prefer a happy medium and a balance.
4. animal companion or found family
I love found family and the complicated relationships that form between people who are brought together by circumstance. I have also never had a pet, so while I can appreciate animal companions, I can't really relate to it.
5. horror or romance
If it doesn't have romance, I'm not that interested in it. I absolutely adore romance, and nearly everything that I do will include it. (I guess Project Vestige is an exception though, I recently considered axing the romance subplot).
I'm too much of a baby for horror, anywho.
6. hard or soft magic system
Rather than lay out the lore or have a solid system, I'm more interested in magic that can't be explained and will always remain somewhat of a mystery. We don't know where it comes from, or why, and that mystery, wonder, intrigue and open-endedness is what I like in my magic systems.
7. standalone or series
I have always adored series growing up, and waiting for the next book. I think my greatest writing ambition is to write a long series because it was what I grew up reading.
I have recently also been falling in love with a standalone story though! I think I'd love to write a series of standalone stories someday, even if it sounds like an oxymoron.
8. one project at a time or always juggling 2+
I don't come up with story ideas, they just descend upon me from the heavens at random times. The longer I take a break from writing, the more they begin bombarding me because my creativity just begins to overflow. Recently, I've been more intentional about exploring all of those different ideas and writing at least a little bit down so I don't lose them. Which naturally, results in many many projects that I may or may not get to someday.
It's a blessing to have so many ideas and stories, I think!
9. one award winner or one bestseller
I don't think my writing is the kind to win awards, and that's okay. It'd be cool, but I would love it if my stories become famous bestsellers someday because that means that they've reached a lot of people.
10. fantasy or sci-fi
Full disclosure, not a huge fan of either. Fantasy is a bit overwhelming for me, though I love the idea of it and would someday love to make a proper crack at it if I have something worth working with. Sci-fi is just something I'm not interested in at all.
11. character or setting description
I'm very much a character-driven writer! Characters are the most important think in my writing. And descriptions has always been one of my weaknesses.
12. first or final draft
boy, I'd love to finish a first draft someday,,,
13. love triangle in everything or no romantic arcs
I love romance, and if something has romance in it my interest will increase a tenfold!! I also like love triangles, whether it be the basic, canned version that people like to hate on, or the ones that become realized into polyamory. I love platonic relationships too, but there's room for both in my world.
14. constant sandstorm or rainstorm
The sandstorm in Breath of the Wild scared the crap out of me and I couldn't get out of it for like a solid 10 minutes so I'm gunna go with a rainstorm for this one. I love rain.

hiii! your project is AMAZING and you're all so talented 😭😭 but i have a question if you feel comfortable with sharing. which apps/programs you guys used to recreate the game? I'm interested in developing my own games but have no idea where to start. can you give me some tips? 🙂 tysm anyway!
Tumblr media
If you want to make a standalone visual novel, then the program we use, Ren'Py, is perfect! It's free and designed specifically to make visual novels easy to make for everyone, including beginners. I had literally zero understanding of programming when I started working on ILW and just figured it out through tutorials, asking questions on forums, and trial and error.
This is the Ren'Py link.
Because this is long, under the cut I'm sharing some things you'll need to think about if you want to make a visual novel:
Your team:
You don't have to have a team of people helping you with this. You can do it alone. However, I will say that ILW would not be what it is if I had just tried to go it alone. It is so much better than anything I could've dreamed of when I first got the idea. More people on a team = more ideas, more constructive criticism and feedback, and more heads going in together to make a better product. But if you want a team, you need to make sure you maintain an attitude and environment that is open to suggestions and contributions from others. Be ready and willing to throw out ideas you like if it no longer works or someone thinks of something better. Nothing kills the creative spirit faster than defensiveness and competitiveness, so to have a well-working team, open-minded members and sharing your ideas and criticism in a positive way is extremely important.
Art:
This is one of the first things you should really nail down, because if you start working on your game but never figure out the art, everything else will go to waste. For most VN creators, they usually hire out for art. For us, since this is a free fan project, our artists worked for free. We were also lucky to already have a bunch of backgrounds and assets from Choices that our artists could edit, so we didn't have to make dozens and dozens of entirely new backgrounds. If you're going to have to hire out, I'd try to really compress the amount of art you'll need - plan ahead and cut down unnecessary characters who'd need sprites, maybe use a silhouette for unnamed characters, and limit the amount of backgrounds you'll need, because backgrounds take up a lot of space, they take up a lot of time to make, and they're expensive.
Programming:
Obviously, programming is a big thing. If you have enough motivation, you should be able to figure out a lot of this on your own. If you use Ren'Py, be sure to read the documentation, watch a lot of basic tutorials, and just get into the engine and start getting your hands dirty! It seems like a lot at first, but once you get the feel of it, it's actually not too complicated. When it comes to programming, I recommend simplifying everything as much as possible. When I first started ILW, I didn't simplify things much (because I was figuring things out) so what I used to do in three lines of code I now do in one. Limiting the amount of code you ultimately end up writing GREATLY diminishes possibility of errors and bugs. Also, try to get as organized as possible. Make as many folders, subfolders, and text files as you need. Don't try to put the whole script in one file, don't put all the images in the same folder. Good organization goes a long way to making everything a lot easier to keep track of.
Game structure:
Piecing together a branching game is honestly quite a puzzle. Before going into working on your game, you should sit down and figure out game mechanics. What points do you want to include? Personality? Relationship? Romance? Skills? Some kind of narrative scale akin to blood vs shadow? Figure out what points systems you want to include and then figure out how that's going to impact the story and where. When creating love interests, don't just create a character and assume they'll fit themselves into the narrative. Focus on the character as a character first, meaning determine how they fit into the story's narrative, and then think about them as a love interest second. If you do this, it will make them a better character and a more satisfying love interest. Finally, start the game knowing how much variation you want. Do you want something with immense, diverging endings? How much variation do you want within one scene? Because interactive fiction is so determinant on player choices and there can be so many routes, it's not a good idea to just go with the flow and see what happens, because otherwise you won't be able to reconcile all the different routes you likely created. So figure out the overall structure for your story in terms of mechanics before you really start on planning.
Planning and writing:
Once you have the previous stuff figured out, then you can start actually planning the story and eventually, writing it. Again, I'd recommend you figure out the previous stuff first because if you start planning and writing immediately, but then it turns out you can't solve the programming, or can't get art, then all this work will have been for naught. My advice on planning: do NOT skimp out! Additionally, to make the love interests feel more important to the story as a whole, I would recommend the technique of arc outlining, which is essentially when you take each love interest separate from each other and plan out scenes that tie into the story to further their individual character arcs. Doing this makes it easy to figure out where tender relationship and intimate moments can go, and those moments will be more interesting because they're connected to an actual plot point instead of just being like "it's sexy time!" Once you have your plans, you can start writing. Depending on how long your story is, writing can be really difficult. It takes a lot of time and thought, and burnout is real.
Music:
You'll want to figure out how you'll get music for your game. Again, creators usually hire out for this. On the Ren'Py forums, there's actually a specific topic for music that helps you network with composers who are looking for jobs. For us, again, since we're a fan project that's not making money, we could use 1) Choices music 2) tracks from a music library I have a deal with and 3) as a composer myself, I wrote some original tracks. Also, if you're looking for free sound effects, freesound.org is actually perfect for that. It's where I got the siren, forest, and ghost voice SFX!
Distribution
Distribution can be tricky! For ILW, we originally wanted it to be playable online, but we eventually removed that option because 1) saving online was complicated 2) the quality wasn't as good and it couldn't run smoothly and 3) we didn't want people who could download it, play online and have a bad experience instead of downloading it. If you offer an online option, most people will take it. For indie games, I think using something like Steam or itch.io is the way to go. Unfortunately, that will make it so it's not available on Apple products, but to get it on Apple you have to package it specifically for Apple which is difficult, and you have to pay $100/year to be allowed to have it up on the app store in the first place.
Hopefully this helps! This is really just scratching the surface, but here are some things to think about if you're interested in making your own visual novel.

Hey, I just wanted to say how much I love your art! Lately I decided to rewatch mlp again and I got really caught up in it lol so finding your profile here is like a blessing🥹
I'm absolutely in love with your Applejack, the way you draw her is just *chef's kiss* (her hair, clothing, muscles,, perfection) she's been my fav for so long now and your art of her means a lot to me, your characterisation is so on point! So I've been wondering, maybe you can share some headcanons that you have on Aj? I would love to read (if you want, of course!)
Anon you are the sweetest - that's such a cute, adorable message thank you! I love drawing AJ and I'm happy you like seeing her like that!
As for headcanons, I usually vary somewhat with characterization and hcs depending on what AU I'm thinking of. But sure, here are some that either appear in all of them or are just some ideas I like with her.
Clothes/Outfit I never see AJ in a dress, once she starts seriously working on the farm. I just don't see her in them. Mostly because she goes for practicality and clothes that don't get in the way. So I see her usually wearing an elastic t-shirt and a high ponytail. Not a flannel because they are just uncomfy if you're moving a lot - a t-shirt with a good amount of stretch is just nicer to wear. The braid is preferred mostly because this way the hair isn't as annoying and doesn't get stuck on her sweaty face.
Abs/Six pack No, sorry lmao. That woman loves eating too much so she has no visible six pack. Sure her abs are trained almost as much as the rest of her body but you need to restrict and monitor your food and water intake a lot for them to be visible. And she just loves to eat. (But yeah this is also a bias on my side - I'm not a fan of very defined abs)
Smoking I like to think that she smoked for a short duration when she was younger. Always in secret as Granny Smith was highly against it and AJ still didn't want to get in trouble. She wasn't the best at hiding and did get chewed out occasionally since her clothes would smell or if she didn't air her room enough. She quit but I like to think it's still one of her vices she goes to when she's stressed to the brink. Not physically but emotionally, when she can't stop worrying, and thus fear and stress overcoming her. It's a true exception and her absolutely last resort so it's a very rare occasion. She's not proud of it and once again keeps it a secret. Which is easier now that she's older, wiser and doesn't do it on the regular. If it happens, it's usually deep into the night when she can't sleep, outside on the farm, leaning on the fence, occasionally watching the stars and pondering over whatever is on her mind bothering her.
Girlfriends Rara was AJ's first flame and girlfriend - or rather, summer romance. I like to think they kept meeting during the summer camps and always shared either rooms or tents. Their summer romance grew gradually and was as vanilla as can be. I can see AJ reacting intensely to even slight, soft touches. And Rara - during that one fateful summer - was most likely her realization that she is very into highly feminine women. They lost contact after that year and while it hurt not to see Rara again, AJ got over it in time. After that she always had either a girlfriend, romance or a fling at hand, depending on how much she wanted to focus on the farm and her family. Mostly women who weren't from her village so people usually didn't think she has that much experience with relationships. I can see her being never single unless she was by choice.
Coming Out I like a nice coming out story. I like to imagine AJ knew, after crushing on Rara, that she was into women. So. Much. She didn't really come out for a long time though. I feel she's got a kinda complicated relationship with coming out herself. It's not that she's ashamed but it felt like she still wanted to keep it to herself. And even with her close relationship to her family, she still wondered how they'd react. So, she kept most of her romances (which she appreciated were usually out of town women) more or less intentionally a secret until she came out. People who knew her really well probably figured out she wasn't exactly straight, since she never showed interest in men or romance in her daily life. Work and family were always her top priority. Still, she decided to actively come out to her closest family when she was an adult - including Rainbow. The order of her coming out was: Rainbow, Big Mac, Applebloom and then Granny Smith - which she was the most nervous about. But obviously they all reacted positively (I do have some art planned for this and sketched out but no idea when I'll finish lmao). After that, she didn't actively come out to anyone anymore. Her dating women just became something she was suddenly open about and didn't hesitate to talk about anymore, like mentioning she's currently seeing 'a woman from X City'.
Rainbow I included Rainbow in the Coming Out segment because Rainbow and AJ are platonic soulmates to me. Rainbow is her family like her brother and sister are - more so than the other Mane 6. In AUs where I hc Rainbow as an orphan she is regularly invited to the Apples on holidays. She's got copies of AJs keys and regularly just walks into the house, truly like a family member. They would kill and maim for each other. They get each other in ways the others can't and they can be open with each other like no one else. They can spend an hour next to each other not talking and just enjoying the other's company. They'll have the worst argument with nonstop shouting but easily forgive each other and will laugh together again some minutes later, when everyone else thought they'd claw out each other's throats. They know each other's worst thoughts and secrets and don't judge. They are also each other's wingwoman - though usually it's Rainbow trying to play match maker, as she likes to keep her love life off the topic list. She knows about AJs crush on Rarity in almost any AU, and usually is the first or even only person. Also they have their Best Buds Bar Busting Night, which is a recurring ritual of them hopping bars and drinking together.
Marriage AJ isn't big on marriage and weddings for herself. Not that she hates them, but rather it's that she doesn't think about it. For many relationships, she knows they're temporary since the women are usually out of town. She makes it clear from the get go she won't leave the farm and plans on inheriting and caring for it in the long run as well. In almost all of the AUs she does like the idea of marriage and having a wedding once the topic comes up between Rarity and her. She'd love for Rarity to have fun and go all in with the preparations. As for herself, she suddenly imagines having a ring on her hand and calling Rarity her 'wife'. When she's alone, cleaning the kitchen or the house, she'll whisper it out loud and smile at the small adrenaline rush running through her body. She likes calling Rarity her wife. And then, suddenly she's actually thinking about proposing, until she's got enough courage to actually do it.
Well, those are some small ones! <3 It was nice writing it out. I do have some nsfw hc as well but I'm leaving them out for now.

Nox... please tell me you think that hitachiincest is canon after the events of the manga. That Hikaru and Kaoru do end up together/signs of it. Please ;;
UNFORTUNATELY i have not read the manga and have no intention of doing so. i think i discussed this in an ask eons ago but i am not very interested in the ouran manga as opposed to the anime since the manga is aiming for a slightly different audience (lets face it; the anime is a comedy while the manga is actually a shoujo/romance story) and i do not like romance stories one bit, so the ouran manga bored the hell out of me. plus i just enjoy the art and writing in the anime far more; it's by Bones who also did Death Note so they're pros at this whole anime adaptation game. (and there's no carriage in the manga. i have complicated feelings on the matter.)
that mini preamble aside while i don't know a whole lot about the manga i know the important bits + ending and all that. the only ship canon in the manga is haruhi/tamaki iirc but canon is my bitch. i always view most ships as "schrodinger's canon"; it being never addressed means it is as much canon as it is not canon. If there is no evidence for or against it then it can go either way. And 99% of the time in media when it comes to gay shipping (even straight shipping on occasion) they either A) didn't ever intend for the relationship to be read as gay so there is nothing that would confirm nor deny a relationship or B) they absolutely thought of it and decided to use plausible deniability so they could have their cake and eat it too (just enough hints that the shippers will go apeshit but not enough to make it be seen as "canon" by most viewers)
anyways. all of this is to say hikakao is pretty much as canon as it is not canon, it is literally just up to each individual reader because there is nothing pointing to or against them being together in the end. they very much fall into category two.
personally, you know me. i like to think they're together. in the manga hikaru's crush on haruhi is much more explicit than the anime (where i read it as not a crush but just friendship jealousy) but either way haruhi is taken by the end so hikaru has to get over it (rip hikaharu shippers. haruhi has two hands though i guess)
i can see hikaru/kaoru even if they didn't end up together traditionally or anything, they're clearly going to be each other's first priority for like, ever. i never read their bond as strictly romantic or platonic or familial bc tbh the way they were raised and the way they go about life together breaks many traditional boundaries that there's really no label attachable to it. like hikaru could get married but he's still sharing a bed with kaoru. it's just like that.
i've read several very good fics about post-manga hikakao, rediscovery and all that. (i also had one i was writing that i should finish...)
I think there's something very special about the idea of their bond post-manga. Hikakao in the beginning is very strained; they're always together because they have no other choice. they have no friends and nobody to rely on but each other. but by the end they have friends, they have found themselves as their own people, they are becoming independent and learning to separate little by little...and yet they find each other still the most important person to them. That now, they're together not because of necessity, but because they have and can be apart, and have been apart before, but have decided of their own free will that they still love each other. it's not longer a forced compulsion. they have grown and changed and decided, after experiencing so much new stuff in life, they still want to stick together because they love each other. I like that idea.
If you want manga evidence iirc they still live together by the end of it all and are doing their twincest shtick still unprompted out of highschool so !?? they are beyond saving.

DC OC | Morningstar Family Lore
Time to post about Morningstar family.
The Morningstar sisters are the daughters of Lucifer/Satan. They span across three different realms: Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Despite being vastly different and having three different mothers, the sisters love and care for each other very much. Their feelings towards their dad, however, depends on which one you ask.
First to the mothers of the daughters.
Bethesda - Mother of Uriel and Makayla Morningstar
Bethesda is the first wife of Lucifer Morningstar. They were married up until Lucifer fell from Heaven, leaving Bethesda no choice but to separate from him. Bethesda is a Seraphim, therefore holding a very coveted position among the other Angels.
Like other angels, Bethesda wields a flaming sword, but also uses a flaming spear as a secondary weapon.
Magdalena - Mother of Lilith and Jezebel Morningstar
Magdalena is Lucifer's second wife and the mother of Lilith and Jezebel. She is a Fallen Angel, previously being a lesser angel. She found a fallen Lucifer near death and took him back to her home to nurse him back to health. Eventually, they started a romance and ended up having two children.
The two ended up splitting after Lucifer became a Demon. Magdalena says it's because Fallen Angels don't mix with Demons.
Joanna Martin - Mother of Elyon, Azriel, and Myra Morningstar
Joanna Loreli Martin is the third wife of Lucifer Morningstar and the mother of Elyon, Azriel, and Myra. A quiet, book loving woman that somehow caught the attention of the literal Devil and ended up having three children with him, Joanna is quite remarkable in the sense that she has tamed the King of Hell. She preferred not to be Queen of Hell, instead returning back to her normal life as a saleswoman.
Now onto the daughters and their feelings towards their father
Uriel -> Her feelings about Lucifer are complicated. On one hand, that's her father and she loves him. But on the other, he brought shame upon both her, her sister, and her mother. She's caught between having empathy for him and resenting him.
Makayla -> Straight up resents him a bit for what he's done. How could he abandon his family in order to have more power? Not to mention all the whispers she had to endure during her training. Makayla could never look him in the eye after he fell.
Lilith -> Lilith is indifferent to Lucifer. She's glad he was there and all, but she more or less treats him as the "can you do me a favor" contact in her phone. The only time they really talked is when she wanted Lucifer to revive Eddie.
Jezebel -> Jezebel is the one who is recognized as the true heir to the throne by many of Hell's upper echelon. Because of this, she feels an immense pressure to live up to her father's legacy.
Elyon -> Elyon loves Lucifer like any daddy's girl does. The only complaint she has is that he should get the nobility to recognize that her and her sisters are also Lucifer's heirs.
Azriel and Myra -> Same as Elyon, only they're both spoiled by him. Lucifer has created two monsters and doesn't even know it yet. Myra sometimes treats him as a servant to boss around.
Bonus: Pictures of five of the seven sisters

I've always wanted to like horror. I always try to get into it? I've had friends all through life that love horror, especially movies. But i end up loving the time i spend watching it with friends more than I've ever enjoyed the content itself. And like i feel like I'm somehow failing to see it the way large parts of the population like yourself do? But i don't know how to enjoy the medium?
The hurtles I've identified so far are that when there's ableism involved i tend to check out fully. That's been a dead end. And when there's painfully illogical choices by the main characters (the ones that the audience are encouraged to connect with). I get it's a useful tool for plot and moving the story along, but any emotional connection that was built there is like nullified? Idk. Not sure how to see what other people see cuz it looks like fun for y'all
Got any advice?
First I'd say - maybe horror just isn't your thing? I love it, I don't expect everyone to love. I barely expect anyone that likes horror to like anything at all similar to what I like. It's a damn slog for me to find new horror I enjoy, even among the horror fandom, because so many of them want it all to be Insidious or Saw or whatever - which is fine but not interesting to me.
Ableism is a deep dive I need to spend time on, but short answer is - I haven't got a good answer here other than maybe steer clear of the "slasher" sub-genre where it seems most rampant.
I think the main item I want to dig into is whether or not horror in general is uniquely poor with ableism, or is it consistent with other media and singled out for other reasons. I have a suspicion that it's the latter, purely on the basis that it's common in generalizations like "horror has an ableism problem" where the reality is "society at large has an ableism problem" that the problem of the former is a reflection of the latter, rather than innate to the former.
But I don't know, Jason is a horror icon and earliest versions ain't too pretty from that perspective. Hard to equate the latter versions with ableism on accounta he is essentially a supernatural entity after a certain point and whatever, you get the idea. It's all complicated and takes time to unravel. However, all that to the side, it may help to consider if those movies in some way reflect something uniquely bad, or if it's instead more upsetting due to horror characters generally existing in upsetting or disturbing situations. Both can be true on a case by case basis - like the infamous "black guy dies first" problem, which STILL HAPPENS somehow even though it's a problem so widely known that it's cliche even as satire. I have some thoughts about that I'll write up sometime as well.
I'm thinking a way to approach it may be via Franklin, the wheelchair using character of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, who I believe is meant to illustrate the poor way disability is treated, confronting the audience with their own biases. That's a whole other long essay that needs a good deal more work. But I notice it, oh boy do I, especially in the beloved "80s movies," yikes. I enjoy much about them, but there was some... stuff.
Now, characters making stupid decisions I mean... that's just movies. That is literally all movies, characters make stupid decisions. I can't say that makes it better, but I can promise you the average bad character decision per horror, science fiction, Disney(tm), drama, romance, etc etc movie is going to average the same. On the other hand, if this happens in almost all the movies your friends watch, they might just have bad taste in horror.
The takeaway here is getting into horror is something you're probably gonna have to work at if you really want to make it happen. Check out reviews, trusted sources, see if you can find some novels or shows or movies that handle those specific issues well. You may find some trusted artists you can go to more consistently but it's probably going to require some screening. And then also - again - if you don't like horror, that's not a failing or bad or anything to stress over. Some people just don't like certain stuff. No big, live and learn, other fish in the sea, different strokes, all that jazz.

I think one of the main issues with not only s2 but some of s1 as well as that only neil was involved with the creation of both of them because terry unfortunately passed away. It lost something vital in that moment. In s1, they still had the book and I think s1 did a good job as far as adaptations go with some grievances, but now in s2, it's whatever neil is going to do and with how active he is on tumblr and how the fans are and how he's reacting to them, it's losing the spirit of the original even further. Not BECAUSE the ship is canon, but everything else surrounding the ship and how we got there and how the writers and the actors are changing the characters more as they progress from one season to the next. I watched s2 feeling giddy for more good omens and very quickly that giddiness turned sort of confused and disappointed. I didn't want disjointed filler fanfic with a loose plot. It didn't fit. It didn't feel right. Overall, I didn't hate the season, but I didn't quite like it either. The handful of you good omens critical blogs have summed it up very well for me and I'm surprised it's not a more popular opinion. I've just seen a couple people talking about how book fans are complaining which is the most dismissive way to put it. I'm not sure if people are blinded by their theories and canon ship or they just don't care that this season felt almost fanmade, but I'm sad that the book and tv show versions are now miles apart rather than cousins.
That's a long ask, thank you for sharing!
I actually did like season 1, too. The book is very hard to transfer to tv imo and choices had to be made.
Technically, Adam is the main character, but putting more focus on him would either mean a) a kid show with a lot of stuff about the them or b) more Anathema and conspiracy theories discussion.
That probs wouldn't have worked that well, so Gaiman made the two most colourfull characters the protagonists and in order to flesh them out added to their relationship.
Other stuff was added for comedic reasons or drama. Which I get.
So season one was a fair interpretation with necessary (to appeal to a mainstream audience) changes.
And both actors were doing an amazing job, so that helps.
Another plus is that a lot of new fans had so much fun with the material and created a ton of art/fics and revived the fandom.
And then it went off the rails somehow.
The thing is, Good Omens isn't a drama. A lot of dramatic events happen, but they feel understated, it's mainly weird, quirky and funny.
It also isn't a love story. In the romantic sense.
There is a lot of love in the book.
And I truely do not know what exactly happened, that turned such a unique little thing into the most bland, generic romance.
Probably capitalism.
I mean, just watching Crowley and Aziraphale trying to weather everyday life without having their jobs anymore would have been hilarious, but probs to niche.
And I would love to know what made Gaiman change his tune in regards to the nature of their relationship.
He does not really answer stuff, though, he's good at circumventing.
I hope at least it wasn't tumblr that influenced him. In most cases a creative process suffers from too much social media interaction. (Season 3 could get even worse).
The fandom dynamics regarding criticsm are always complicated.
I do speculate that most hyper positive fans are fairly new, just in it for the ship and going with the flow.
Also critcism is kinda a four letter word these days.
Sadly.
I mean it can be fun and relieving to went or pick apart or even ridicule and as long as it's tagged correctly nobody gets hurt by it.
Maybe 'Good Omens' also is a sore subject, because after years of being vague, Crowley/Aziraphale actually got canonized, and no matter what they represent as, they do look like a gay couple to the general audience, and people might be afraid criticsm might reflect badly on the representation they finally got.
Who knows.
In the end, one can always cherry pick. I do like some scenes, I do ship Crowley/Aziraphale, but I'm disappointed that their characters went full on angel/demon cliche contrary to the appealing, nuanced book versions.
And yeah, there is no actual plot so we might as well have gotten smth like Crowley tries to earn money by becoming an uber driver or smth (there's great fanfic about that).
But that's just me, I do get why people enjoy it. Criticsm just helps to deal a bit with the disappointment, because, like you, I was initially thrilled about the second season.

Zorro or Good Omens
For the ask game my dear!
Hello there, my dear old Valley! :)
Sorry it's taken me so long to answer. I *will* answer with a gifset as the "make me choose" game is supposed to be, but that might take even more time because aaaah life. Anyway. So here is why it took me so long:
I actually had to think about that one super hard. It's such a difficult choice to make LOL probably because both shows have characters that resonate quite deeply with me, but regarding different parts of me.
Zorro: I really like the character of Diego, who dedicates his life to help others, is always very considerate and caring and is passionate about trying to make the world a better place. The definition of a Good Guy. I *wish* I had a tenth of his courage and he reminds me to look after others, when it's so easy to get caught up in our own life. So he's someone I understand and look up to.
I guess there's also the struggle to live up to the society's expectations, to his family's expectations, the inability to tell people who he really is. Not that I have a secret identity, but we all, to some degree, wear a mask, hide our true nature and try to live up to people's expectations.
Also the fencing. ;-)
Good Omens: For neither of them you specified which version, but for GO I'll specifically pick the TV show, as I think it resonates a bit more with me. Mostly because it expands Aziraphale and Crowley's characters, and their relationship. As a romantic asexual, I don't often feel represented in fictions. I do get love, I do understand love stories, but I don't get the sex part. Attraction, to me, doesn't translate in wanting to sleep with someone. And given that almost 100% of romances in fiction end in sex, well, there's always a part of those stories that remain foreing. But Aziraphale and Crowley, it's not like that. And I know lots of people do like to add a sex component to the story, but that bit of canon that angels and demons don't have sexual organs (unless they make an effort) is actually important to me. The way I read and feel Aziraphale and Crowley's attraction, it's not physical. They just enjoy each other company. They enjoy that feeling of being together, discussing together, seeing the world different through the other's eyes. They like the world better with the other in it. But they don't sleep together. It's been clearly said that after S1 they carved their own bit of a existence for themselves. They have their phone calls and dates, and Crowley comes to the bookshop, etc... So they *are* in a relationship. It's just not sexual (and I really hope Neil will keep it that way, cause it's important to me)
Also, there's the whole Good vs. Evil, more theological discussion that the show handles really well. I love how it's making fun of all the contradictions of the Bible and the Christian religion. But also how being Good in a complicated world is *hard*. Being Good sometimes requests courage and questioning one's own believes. And standing up to your boss.
And it's hilarious, when it's not heartbreaking. It's silly, in a very absurd British way.
So, there, this is what went all through my head. because of the difference in popularity, I feel like Zorro is more personal. Everyone loves GO. It's all over the internet. There's like a new fic every 20 min or something (actual stats I've seen floating around). So for some reason, it makes me feel depossessed of it. While the Zorro fandom is me and 5 people, 3 of which prefer the 1990 show. But on the other hand, Zorro is an old thing (1919!), and it says a rather "classic" story (he's the spiritual father of all the superheroes, after all), while GO is much more unique and modern. It's an important piece of fiction.
