it’s not my scene so forgive me for only having an outsider’s understanding on that situation, but a while back there was drama in one of those massive boy idol franchises where the took an ainu character, jp’s indigenous people, and stripped him of that identity to put him on a unit based on traditional jp culture. so you know, they assimilated him to the imagery of the ppl who killed his ppl basically

idk if it was something leaked or outright hacked, but i saw that part of the reason corporate thought they could get away with that was bc fans of that group were more mild compared to other units’ fans and ever since then i’ve been like. morbidly curious about what notes kr has on every division’s fanbase sksksksksk 💀

I do find it hilarious when people go off about how Marvel!Loki is just some pretty boy and such (unlike the myths where Loki is stated to be "beautiful" *bursts out laughing*), ignoring that for decades the intent was clearly the opposite. This is probably my hottest gquuuuuux take but I don’t actually think Machu’s as rich as people are thinking like she’s not poor but she’s not what people would consider rich either. Now until five minutes ago I was thinking that she’d at least be upper middle class if not just upper class, but I just had the realisation that her phone is still broken in ep 6 and I just double checked to be sure and yeah Machu’s still using the phone with the broken screen. And this is a big thing because it adds another layer to Machu’s layers of insecurity while also bringing her closer socially to Shuji and Nyaan and explains some of the more anachronistic aspects of her character when you consider her as a “rich girl” which I actually talked about in another post where I went into what impact her schooling may’ve had.

I think this is actually a massive thing because it does explain a lot of the stuff around Machu, her mum and what little we got about her absent dad in this weeks ep. So firstly I can’t talk for certain about what sort of culture Japan has around private schools because I’m not Japanese but I do know that round where I live it’s not uncommon for families to prioritise the fees of a private school over almost everything else with it being one of the largest costs they’ll have in a year and sacrificing in a lot of areas to afford the luxury. The possibility of this being Machu’s situation is one which I think can both explain the absence of Machu’s dad and at least in part the emphasis her mother has on school. To begin with we know that Machu’s mother is a public servant with some level of responsibility, she seems to be in charge of part of the audit division but she’s not high up enough to not have the responsibility of checking over her subordinates work. So she’d be decent pay but nothing extravagant, especially not the sort of money that would afford a high school that’s prestigious enough Xavier knows about it. So that implies that Machu’s father is gone working wherever he is, and working somewhere that communication seems to not be easy so I’d assume outside of the colony, as well as not something overly prestigious that would put him in a position to communicate frequently. (Also I must highlight that a lot of this is inferred and guesses based basically off only Xavier’s comments about Machu’s school the fact Machu still has a broken screen on her phone weeks if not months later and the absence of Machu’s father.)

Now this is all relevant to the broken screen because it shows that both outside of the clanbat reward money she’s putting toward the earth trip/shuttle Machu doesn’t have access to a lot of money, not even enough to repair her phone screen and she’s unwilling to talk to her mother about getting it fixed. Showing that she has an awareness about their financial situation. This is important because it adds to Machu’s clear feelings of inadequacy as if she’s aware of the financial strain her schooling puts her family under with how she reacts to everything else it’s clear that that would be another stress point for her and making her feel useless. This sort of thing also explains why unlike her classmates Machu isn’t shown to be friends with the other girls at the school, we see them admiring her and trying to be friendly with her multiple times but she just brushes them off, something that makes sense if she knows that she’s in a different world to them, if they don’t have their family making sacrifices to get them schooled there. Also it’s shown at least a little with how her classmates got so excited about the gambling site in ep 4 while Machu’s just boggling at the idea of that much money (which is almost enough for one of the ships Shuji was looking at), but for them it’s just spending money for an afternoon with friends but for Machu it’s mindboggling large that she doesn’t even know what to spend it on, at least until Shuji’s

This is also another reason why her parents would be so on her ass about school, if they’re sacrificing to make sure Machu can attend with her mother constantly working long hours and her dad possibly leaving them to work outside the colony it makes sense from their pov why Machu’s seeming disregard for school is such a massive issue. It also explains why Machu’s almost sad when she talks about stuff like the careers goals, almost like she wishes she could put something else but she’s unwilling to lie about what she wants.

Like it’s been staring me in the face and I only just realised it, like it gives more detail to why Machu’s clashing with her mum as it’s a common belief with parents that send their kids to private schools that it’s the best thing they could possibly do and the kids just don’t understand that. So of course it’s entirely unreasonable for Machu to try and fluff around instead of keeping her head down and studying properly like she should be, and of course the absent father would have even more issues because he’s sacrificing time with his family so they can afford it. And of course this feeds even more into Machu’s struggles with her identity and value as a person because her parents not only have an ideal she’s not reaching, they’re spending beyond their means to try and get her to reach it and she just can’t because it’s not who she is. Giving her a very concrete example of her relationship with people worsening because she isn’t performing her role, something that is reflected in her ep 5 freakout about the Kira Kira. Except that time it’s not her personal failings as the issue, it’s her friend “taking” her role away from her and with it her arguably strongest connections at the moment.

Your explanation about the Words of Power and if Shea had to use them in the past depending on how we headcanon our MC had me wondering.

Will we get in-game flashbacks about MC's and Shea's first meeting, or is it purely headcanon based with only passing mentions?

Asking because I can't help but imagine my MC just scared of Shea at first, to be honest? Because of how afwul the previous keeper was and all. Like, considering my MC is a barghest, I guess the dog comparisons are all the more accurate, so I'll go with that. It's like the idea that even a dog who bite its previous owner because of mistreatment won't necessarily be bitting any human - it may instead just be scared of other people instead, and once you gain its trust, it will probably be even more loyal and devoted to you than most other dogs. This is sort of what I imagine, but I don't know how much of this is up to our choice!

By the way, if this won't be in the game itself or if you don't consider it too spoilery, what did Shea think back then, if the MC was just genuinely scared of them when they met?

I'd like to include in-game flashbacks eventually. To the MCs time with Shea, or perhaps that first year after they woke up. Or even previous jobs with Shea. I've also considered writing them as separate snippets, but to be perfectly honest I've never much enjoyed writing those (and would much rather focus on writing the game). I also like having everything in one place, available to the reader. :-)

I have written some snippets in the past, however. One from the POV of Shea, and the other from the MC. They're a bit old, but I do still like them. I might even rewrite some of them and add them to the game eventually!

don't talk to me if you majorly dislike any of the bau for seeing will as nothing more than a case consult. will intentionally and purposefully makes himself unavailable to others to the point that their only way of connecting with him half the time is over a case. i guarantee you they have tried time and time again to invite him to things, start conversation, and he hits them with "we're at work." katz, zeller, and price foster a very lighthearted, inviting workspace that you see him both emotionally and literally PHYSICALLY distance himself from. i'm sure there's plenty of things they could've done, more of something. people see what they want to in will, pieces of him. a tool, an advisor, something to pity, something to understand. a dog who is trained to hunt, yet fitted with a muzzle. but will is what stands in his own way of human connection, every time. too afraid of what rests beneath his surface

One thing that, while not surprising, is always kind of interesting to me, is looking at the difference between how the canon (book canon, to be clear; the movie canon is pretty different on that point) presents Denethor's character, and the fandom perception and attitude towards the character

Like, the general fandom perception (whether coloured by the movies and its presentation of the character, or simply by the way he interacts with more likeable canon characters + fandom's tendency to focus primary on the most obvious feature of a character, or whatever) is pretty simply negative "lol fuck that guy" kind of attitude, or even at its most nuanced, still mainly focusing on the harm he did to other characters, with little regret for the character's own fate

Vs the text of the books puts in a fair amount of effort to highlight the tragedy of Denethor's character and what he could have been. It certainly lets his faults show and doesn't try to excuse them, but it also gives credit where it's due for his strength, intelligence, perceptiveness, and his dedication to the good of Gondor, and it presents his fate as a tragedy as much as any strong and respectable character tricked by an enemy and driven into despair and madness would be. It mourns his death as much as any other needless death. And even in his death scene, the narrative allows him to still keep a remnant of his resolve and strength of will, you can still see what he might once have been and what he could have been, even though it has been twisted to such a horrifying and tragic end result by his despair and madness

Like, yeah, Denethor is not a very pleasant person, we know he treated Faramir poorly and clearly favored Boromir (I think it's interesting that it's noted that Denethor probably liked Boromir better because Boromir resembled him less than Faramir did), that he seems to mostly have valued other people based on how he thought they could be useful to him, all of that. It's not shocking as such that fandom regards him as an asshole, because, let's be real, he was one

But he also wanted the best for Gondor, and loved it and its people in his way, and acted for what he believed to be Gondor's good according to the beat of his ability. And he is compared to both Aragorn and Faramir, said to be very like them in many aspects. The compassion and even respect shown toward him in the text of the books is not unearned

And just, yeah, reading the books, I really do feel for the tragedy in his character and story, and I think it's interesting to look at him from that more compassionate perspective the books tend to take.

Slash's Famous Scene

Here we are, lads. Everyone's favorite scene in the totally best arc of WC. The one where Slash pins a pregnant woman to the ground and licks her face, while threatening her fetuses and cutting her cheek open so Clear Sky can have more man pain.

So far I've been using "fridging" as synonymous with the brutal killing of a female character to advance a male character's arc; but I do want to remind everyone that the term "fridging" describes disproportionate violence done to women in the service of their husband/brother/father/son's arcs. It doesn't HAVE to be death; it can also be battery, maiming, depowering, or sexual assault.

So far, 8 women have died to serve male arcs, most of them for Clear Sky specifically. Fluttering Bird, Bright Stream, Storm, Misty, Bumble, Turtle Tail, Rainswept Flower, and Petal. Now Star Flower gets sexually harassed and kidnapped, bringing the arc's fridge total to 9.

Anyway content warning, obviously. It's still Warrior Cats and doesn't get too graphic, but this bag contains a dead dove.

First, Clear Sky gets another toesucking from the ghost of his wife who died after leaving his controlling ass. Specifically, after he threw his disabled brother out of his Clan, and after his lust for seeing random people (including his brother) get mauled at the border resulted in the death of Fox.

She tells him that his behavior never drove anyone away, it was all totally not his fault. I'm waiting for a laugh track and it never comes. The apologetics in this arc are unrivaled.

Then, Clear Sky wakes up and his pregnant wife is not next to him. So he goes looking for her and sees her being flanked by Slash and his memorable minions, Grunt 1 and Grunt 2. Star Flower is so possessed by fear that she doesn't move.

They REALLY need to sell that Slash is TRUE evil, PURE evil, because of the wet fart that is Clear Sky's redemption arc. They're saying that Clear Sky ISN'T bad, because he is not this. A dirty, sadistic monster who coos evilly about how he's going to hurt the kittens in his wife's belly and cruelly twitches his whiskers.

(as a petty side detail, please also note that this passage cannot even keep Slash's fur color straight. Behold, a cat so evil that he cannot even remain a brown tabby! He turns gray when he commits nefarious deeds! Ashfurification included!)

Star Flower is the one being pinned to the ground and having her face cut open as Slash screams about how she promised her father she'd be his mate, but this scene is about Clear Sky's distress. Star Flower is an object to this narrative, which these two men are in conflict over.

The pinning, the violence, the sexual implications, are being done to make Slash as monstrous as possible to contrast to Clear Sky. Slash doesn't kill anyone, so the narrative needs to make you SO UPSET your emotions are thrown into overdrive, so you'll accept how truly terrible he is.

The simple truth that this rancid book is trying to make you ignore, is that Clear Sky is exponentially more deadly. He has caused harm so unspeakable that they have to describe his bloody murders in passive voice. They "died" now, instead of "were killed," and the violent system he created is presented as "making up" for the trauma he's caused to the survivors.

"Pushing his muzzle close to her injured cheek, he licked the blood from her fur with a long, lingering lap."

Think critically about the characters they are presenting and the actions they make them do. None of these are real people. They are writing choices. They have portrayed Slash as a perverted, domineering, child-abusing savage, so Clear Sky the Settler can look good in comparison.

then Star Flower gets dragged off, kicking and struggling, feeble and completely unable to defend herself as clear sky thinks about how she might die along with his fetuses.

Obviously Clear Sky is so very stressed out by all this and needs to blow off some steam, so he smacks the nearest woman and starts screeching about how Star Flower is more loyal than the son he abuses

The first thing he does after the Slash event was physically assault the nearest woman. I can't... I don't have the words. Are you seeing this. Do you see what I am fucking dealing with. literally the first woman he sees.

"DOES THAT FEEL LIKE AN ACT??" He bellowed like a fucking wifebeater at the girl whose face is bleeding because he cut her in a fit of rage. That's fine as long as you don't lustfully lick it afterwards I guess!!!
