I'm sorry but WHAT is happening in Duel Links??

*CRACKS KNUCKLES* ALRIGHT im certain other people could explain this better than I could (bark at me if any of this is wrong,) but, an attempt at a quick rough tl;dr of it:

so like. an important thing to note with DL is that like..... the in-universe explanation for Duel Links is that it's one of Seto Kaiba's new VR Next Evolution of Dueling Ego Projects, which like, ok sure, he Makes Those, but what's a little alarming with this one is that technically (almost) none of the characters In The Game are actually Those Characters Specifically, they're AI recreations of them with their original self's memories (that's already a lot, right out the gate.) (I say "almost" everyone because I think it's implied DSOD Kaiba and maybe Mokuba actually Are them because it's Their Game and they're always product testing it, there might be others though)

anyway another thing with this situation is that, uh, Most Characters in Duel Links Do Not Know They're AI. They just assume they're the original guy, that's just them! Hanging out in this cool new Duel VR! But then sometimes you DO get characters who actively are aware that they're just code in a video game (Yami Bakura and Bruno 5D's both comment on it), so you have this really interesting ecosystem of duelists who Are aware they don't really exist, and duelists who are None the Wiser. absolutely batshit.

and sure this is all well and fine with like, DM and maybe GX characters, ok sure it makes sense Kaiba would be recreating notable duelists of that era, but i cannot stress enough He Is Also Making AI Recreations of Dead People. DL very much takes place post-manga, post-DSOD. But Yami Yugi is There. Yami Bakura and Yami Marik are Very There. Manga Pegasus is there. Seto "I Will Never Learn to Come to Terms With Grief" Kaiba is actively raising the dead in his little VR card game simulator so they can live forever and there's a 50/50 chance they'll be FULLY AWARE that they died. JESUS.

There's also the hulking elephant in the room of Duel Links Has Been Including Characters From Series Kaiba Has Nothing to Do With For Quite Some Time Now--and a lot of those characters are like HEY. WHERE THE FUCK ARE WE. like I SWEAR someone from either Zexal or Arv-V was actively like "hi what the hell is KaibaCorp" so like...Kaiba's branding is ALL OVER THE VR WORLD EVEN IN THE WORLDS HE DIDNT EXIST IN. It's painting this absolute off the rails picture of Seto Kaiba trying to create this virtual multiverse of The Best Duelists From Every Timeline Living or Dead, and half the guys he's pulling in at this point are like *spawns into a perfect recreation of their hometown with no real idea of who did this* "what in the goddamn."

like guys from zexal/arc-v are actively IN GAME like trying to figure out why this VR world exists and who created it. It's absolutely wild and fascinating to watch. excited to see what happens when they add VRAINS world next month?!?!? idk anything about VRAINS really but it's probably going to make the DL lore even more bananas.

ANYWAY. ALL OF THAT SAID. NOW WE HAVE MAXIMILLION PEGASUS DROPPING IN-GAME OMINOUS SENTIMENTS it's kind of a culmination of all of the aforementioned shit. Duel Links Pegasus (an AI recreation of manga!Pegasus, who is fully aware A.) that's he's dead and B.) that there's multiple worlds and timelines crammed into this Virtual Reality) has a conversation with Paradox (an AI recreation of Paradox the Bonds Beyond Time Yugioh Movie Bad Guy, who, for all intents and purposes, fully believes he's the real dude and he wants to kill-die-explode-murder Pegasus SO BAD) breaking down that "hey, this place unites different histories, and if you kill me duel monsters won't cease to exist. Anyway, I'm not real! Ohoho! This world holds threads of tragedy, Paradox-boy!" <-- (not verbatim. but i wish it was.) Meanwhile Paradox is having a sputtering breakdown right next to him. This is a video game to play yugioh the trading card game.

like. it's just absolutely wild. konami could have just said "hey heres yugioh characters from every series. whatever" but no instead they threw in a bunch of mild psychological horror and inter-series friction and existentialism and it's a freemium video game that i have 600+ hours on on steam. yugioh duel links !

So, little while ago I was scrolling down a Yu-Gi-Oh livejournal community that was very popular in the late 2000s/early 2010s called Playthedamncard, and found something pretty cool: a YGO survey made in 2011 to see what people's interests and opinions of the series were at the time!

Here's the post on the site about it, and here are the answers on the survey itself! I recommend going through it, but I'll post some things i found interesting about it personally:

Seeing all the places that people found the survey, showing how much people used forums back then! According to it, most people found it on Playthedamncard itself, the YGO Abridged forums, Pojo (an anime forum that still exists to this day), Janime (YGO fansite with forums that doesn't exist anymore), a Fanfiction.net YGO shipping forum and TV.com, which i never even heard of before.

The most voted in favorite series was Duel Monsters in japanese, with 5Ds sub in second and YGOTAS in third! Gx sub ended in forth; then in a poll on people second favorite series, YGOTAS ended in first place.

In general in this poll you see how popular the Abridged series was back then. Nowadays you see a lot more people either not knowing about it or just not liking it that much, but at the time most people seemed to have watched it (though seeing how many people that voted in here came from the YGOTAS forums, and how this community was where the series was posted for the first time, there might be some bias here.)

There were some polls for favorite characters in each series that had been released, plus a general one, and the results are not very surprising (sorry for the quality of some of the next pictures, they are really long)

There are also some age/gender/country of origin polls (shoutouts to the 2 people from Brazil that voted!!)

There's some more in the survey itself, including some questions where the person could write in, but these are the ones i decided to show here.

It honestly kinda made me want to do something similar, but seeing how there are 7 series now and i don't know the cast of the latter ones very well it would be a little difficult to do it (that was also something that i found interesting about this poll, you kinda get the idea that people knew a lot more about the other series at the time than nowadays where everyone kinda stays in their corner... though seeing how many there are it is understandable.)

As a bonus, there was a survey from 2010, but that one was made with people giving their answers in the comments of a livejournal post, so a lot less people and it is harder to get a consensus, but i'll still leave a link here!

Yugioh Main Protagonists Ranked

(No Yuudias because Go Rush isn’t complete at the time of writing this and I’m not even caught up on what is out.)

You get a veteran's pass to this blog if you know who I put at number 1 before I even start this list. Because spoilers it hasn't changed at all. And it probably never will. The rest of this list though? It was tight. The middle three are so interchangeable for me I just had to just go with my gut without overthinking it. This first one however was not difficult:

7 Yusei Fudo

While the dub did make me like him more, I'm still not that big on Yusei. His dub added sassiness is entertaining and I even relate to his habit of pushing people away and wanting to do everything on his own. But as a protagonist, he's really plain. He wins every time (outside of a flashback) so his duelling isn't interesting to watch and he just doesn't have any substantial character growth. He’s a completely static character which might be okay for a side character but not for the main character.

6 Yugi Moto

/Atem I guess? Atem gets more screen time and is the one who's duelling 90% of the time, let's be real. That's a problem and all but honestly the switching between and dynamic of Yugi and Atem is enough to put them above Yusei. They lose a lot more than him, making their duelling more interesting and both of them grow over the course of the series. It's fairly basic but still nice, nothing wrong with simple sweet development. Also Yugi himself made a pretty decent protagonist in DSOD, I like how his grief over Atem is explored.

5 Yuma Tsukumo

…yeah this was a really tight list. I love these top five so much that Yuma just ended up here due to stiff competition. Yuma took what Yugi and Atem did and perfected it with his bond with Astral that's more focused on and more well developed as we see exactly how they met and every step in their journey as they become closer and help each other grow as people. It's sweet as hell. Also yes Yuma could be annoying towards the beginning of the show but most of his "stupidity" was coming out of wanting to help his friends so he came off as more of a “caring dumb” most of the time. Plus first impressions, while important, shouldn't define a character (or a person for that matter) and he becomes a much better character and duellist overtime.

4 Yuga Ohdo

I think Yuga is the most unique take on a YGO protagonist. He's not the greatest duellist, he actually loses quite a lot and that majorly raises the stakes of the duels (a point that also applies to Yuma, though I feel they stopped letting him lose after part one ended but it’s still good). Because it's made clear he can lose at any point and there are consequences for those losses. Not life threatening consequences but still. Consequences that can hurt him, rush duels, and/or his friends and that made the show so unpredictable and interesting to watch for the very first time. But Yuga's not a pushover either. He's still a strong duellist who gets up after each loss and for gosh sake he invented Rush Duels. I like having a protagonist who's special not because of his duelling or friendships for once, I think that's really neat.

3 Yuya Sakaki

Fun fact: Yuya was the main thing that pushed me to watch Arc V before 5Ds and man did he not disappoint. He is an endearing silly bean who just wants to make everyone around him smile with his entertainment duelling and it was so very sweet and wholesome- OH GOD WHY IS HE A DEMON?! Yeah, Yuya's an interesting protagonist. He's the main hero but also simultaneously the main villain, or at least one fourth of a villain and man was that interesting as hell. Yuya himself is also the perfect summation of Arc V's main themes if that makes sense, since the show is all about how stopping to be kind/share a smile can go a long way and Yuya’s whole goal is to spread smiles.

2 Yusaku Fujiki

I’ll admit, these top two are really personal characters for me. (Yusaku was straight up a part of my wake up call to getting a handle on my mental health.) I relate to Yusaku immensely, even though, to my knowledge, I don’t have PTSD. His more serious stern attitude also fits the more dark serious feel of VRAINS and most importantly, he isn’t completely without personality or character development. From almost the very beginning, he has Ai, an upbeat little bean who is completely opposite to him in personality, to play off of and over the course of the show, Yusaku gradually learns to open up to others easily but his flaws of secretiveness and distancing himself from others remain. And that just felt very real to me. I like how he isn’t just all better one day, it’s a process and the bad things that happened to him shaped him when he was young, but that pain doesn’t have to define him and by the end, it doesn’t. He lets go of his desire for revenge and more easily expresses his emotions/attachments and it’s nice goddammit.

1 Judai Yuki

Yeah, I’ll never change. Take everything I said about Yusaku having a realistic/relatable reaction to a traumatic event, add multiple traumatic events and an adorably sweet personality and you have Judai. I love his upbeat personality at the beginning of the series, he’s arrogant and a bit air-headed but in a way I found really charming. Then the show started hurting him… and hurting him more… and while he mostly retained his cheerfulness and seemingly came back swinging in seasons 1 and 2, there was a gradual shift in his personality which took centre stage in season 3. His determination to save Johan becomes his downfall and after seemingly losing the rest of his friends, it completely destroys him. He endures constant traumatic events and pressure from everyone around him and it changes him and breaks him like it would a real person. Makes me so glad that Judai was able to come back from it. During the highly underwatched and underrated season four, he gets space from all the pressure that was put on him and is able to regain his love of duelling and in a way, his childhood. Not so much childhood innocence, but he’s able to have the heart of a child while still being an adult mentally. I just, oh my gosh I love Judai so much.

various unanswered questions as of the start of day 49 (this is gonna be like nothing but late plot spoilers so you've been warned):

what exactly is A trying to do here? You can see the general shape of what this is all about, but it still isn't clear if A is sticking to Carmen's original plan 100%, and if he is, what exact form it takes. got a Seed of Light involved, that's for sure.

even if A is following Carmen's plan to the letter, to what degree is this actually a good or helpful thing? Clearly everybody loved her, but she's mostly just shown to be charismatic and passionate. looking out over a cyberpunk hellscape where starving people are getting dragged off on meathooks for organ-harvesting and going 'what's wrong with the world is..... people don't, like, believe in things anymore, you know?' this might just be me being cynical, but everything about Carmen is filtered through A's memories so I feel a need to compensate. And even then she's shown being cool with human experimentation up until she killed a child.

is Angela in fact planning to sabotage this? I mean, on one hand, I have no reason to believe that Benjamin "If I could suck A's cock I would never brush my teeth again" McHokma was lying to A. On the other hand, it is unclear if B gave his warning at the same time we heard it happen. for all I know Angela recorded it and is playing it every loop days later as a 5D chess move. On the other other hand, at this point I would be surprised if day 50 isn't essentially Angela elbowing her way through a crowd of As like 'OKAY YOU IDIOTS HAD YOUR CHANCE, NOW IT'S MY TURN TO STRANGLE THIS BASTARD, FINALLY.' I don't even need any explanation beyond the fact that he's A

I assume that the voice in the black screens toward the end of morning cutscene times is the Bucket/CARMEN'S DISEMBODIED NERVOUS SYSTEM FLOATING IN A TANK BECAUSE A IS JUST A REAL COOL DUDE WHO MAKES GOOD DECISIONS but, like. Goddamn. okay this one isn't a question.

okay but where did Burrowing Heaven come from. Like Bloodbath and Snow Queen could both come from lots of people who were close to Carmen I guess, but I can't imagine there are many people who are like 'the innermost expression of my spirit is a monster that represents obsession with Carmen and angst over the fact that Carmen is now a DISEMBODIED NERVOUS SYSTEM FLOATING IN A TANK.' I don't actually expect this one to get answered but it's fun to think about. Since all of the weapons Gebura uses in her suppression seem to be callbacks to stuff she had when she was alive, this would also suggest that Burrowing Heaven popped up pretty soon after Carmen's death.

exactly which parts of Angela's behavior come from the Script, which parts are her improvising to fit the Script while going "for fuck's sake A, I'm not a babysitter", and which parts are actually Angela doing the things Angela wants to do? this is another one I expect no answer to but which is fun to think about.

what exactly was the thing that made B finally slink off and leave A alone? It doesn't seem to have been the whole thing with dissecting Garion's brain (while making her watch. as you dissect her brain. because A IS JUST A REAL COOL DUDE WHO MAKES GOOD DECISIONS.) B seemed to be a willing participant in that. The breaking point seems to have happened before the Sephirot were created or the time loop fun times started. but even ruling those out, there are so many cool and ethical options to choose from! Was it the decision to butcher Carmen's corpse into a DISEMBODIED NERVOUS SYSTEM FLOATING IN A TANK? was it creating Angela in Carmen's image while her corpse was still cooling and then immediately turning around and going 'WTF THIS IS JUST A MACHINE, IT'S NOT CARMEN. I HATE HER'? Was it keeping all of their friends' corpses heaped up in a closet somewhere for future use? was it the continued disastrous human experimentation while callously ignoring everyone dying around him? gosh I love A. don't at all wanna see him fall into some kind of industrial grinder.

Angela's whole thing about how A is dead and she's one of the people who killed him--I've been assured this isn't literally true, but I'm also not yet trusting that it's just a high-level 'oh well you're kinda dead because you see this time loop isn't really living' metaphor either. Oops this one also isn't a question

I swear to god this season’s theme might as well be “let’s show you all the ways we can finish this show in one episode using a smart idea, but proceed to beat it to a pulp with a hammer because we need this show to run on forever and ever and never stop EVER” because Ladybug takes Hawkmoth- oh sorry, MoNaRcH, on this entire fucking treasure hunt 5D chess game, ONLY TO FLUB IT IN THE LAST SECOND?!

It’s so… stupid. Again the show starts with a smart idea to look like they’re becoming a sophisticated plot that moves forward, but the characters’ actions are just so idiotic! Like ladybug/Hawkmoth could’ve easily won if they had done the one logical thing anyone else would have done!

Chat noir… is a tool

Real quick y’all Chat Noir has 1:15 minutes of screentime from a 20 something minute episode, and his screentime consists of one scene where he kills it to being a prop for Ladybug’s plan.

Also is it just me? Or is the show really trying to push chat noir into the back? Like I’m still not sure because it’s only been three episodes, but Chat Noir has been entirely downgrade to funny quips, one line that fans will adore and latch onto, and “yes ladybug you’re amazing ladybug you’re ideas are always right ladybug and you’ll always fix everything ladybug despite failing miserably, still betraying my trust and hiding secrets, and being all in all a shit human”

Ok so when the fuck does this exactly take place?! I know the actual mission is supposed to take place between episode 1 and 2 because of Hawkmoth’s appearance but then why the fuck did they say last episode that there was a time skip where Hawkmoth did nothing?! CLEARLY IF HAWKMOTH WAS CAUGHT LIVE PUTTING A RANDOM GIRL IN A HOSTAGE SITUATION WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF IT?! OR LADYBUG AND CHAT NOIR WOULD HAVE ALERTED THE PUBLIC?!

Thoughts / sort of rating of the Yugioh dubs;

DM- Look for all it's flaws, weird edits and censorship over all it's fairly decent. Most of the voices are good, generally speaking the tone and story are still relatively in tact. No episodes were skipped or out right cut, although changes were made.

Are somethings handles better/ make more sense in the orignal form for sure but during a time among a sea of very mixed dubs (and even compared to some of the other series 4kids/4K tried) It's honestly pretty good.

GX- Look while I admit to having some nostalgia for it's just.. not great. The joke meter got turned farther up and while some areas they did manage to keep the tone/ emotion- particularly there's a few good lines of Jaden/Judai from the dub when desperately going after Jesse/Johan

BUt oh boy is it sure just a product of its time with just some of the dialogue feeling very peak 2000s energy. And also a lot more questionable voice choices for characters (some is decent tho)

I'll sooner recommend someone watch the sub first if genuinely interested in the series. But if you've got a bit of nostalgia or just want to have some fun riffing on something it can be a fun watch.

Other majour problem is due to the desire of wanting to get on the next series fast as possible it never got completed and never got s4

5Ds- A mess.

Once again for a lot of the main cast voices are okay but definitely getting worse/more extreme in their attempts to try and hide death / censor or alter things. Whole chunks of it simply was not dubbed at all which I'm sure made pacing weird.

Never actually watched it all but oof. Even if everything else was great just the fact that there is a good chunk that got cut / not translated makes it hard to recommend watching it.

Might be a fun curious watch I guess but probably the dub series with some of the most issues (maybe)

Zexal- Well at least it got completed, like DM did so that's something. Personally kind eh about some of the voices. Astral's is great love it, Yuma is okay but I can understand how it may get annoying for some.

Another one with pretty bad censorship problems that I think even some who's only watched dub could probably figure seem off.

Probably could have ended up a lot worse truth be told but even looking at how DM was handled probably could have been better in places.

Still suggest subs over dub generally but if knowing of the changes doesn't bother you / okay with the voices I mean there's worse out there.

Arc V-

Decent. A clear sign of things to change and improvements. Complete series, still some expected censorship and changes here and there but otherwise fairly faithful to the source. No egregious changes even any allusions to death if altered it's in away that still makes sense / doesn't totally negate it just perhaps stated less overtly or something.

Serious moments often able to be kept serious (compared to some from what I recall just the usage of jokes didn't feel as egregious / bad)

Voicing pretty good over all with only a few characters that make me question the voice direction.

Overall, for sure worth watching it's fun (also there are just some great very quotable lines that got me laughing)

Likely helped in part by being owned by Konami thus I'd assume giving them some control/input on how things go

Vrains-

So good. Voice acting great and just everything was handled well I think.

Once again Complete series, some of the typical changes that are just usual stuff at this point but for a series that can get as dark and serious as it does they handled it pretty well. I think honestly they even have a few lines that just wow.

Like as much as it would be great to have them do a dub where nothing gets changed (say for anything that is typically might happen for any localization- i.e like changing a joke that doesn't work in translation or whatever) I'd say it's pretty darn close and over solid job.

I know some people we kinda eh on that ending/scene in the last episode and I get it, wasn't what was expected or hoped for maybe but I thought it was fine. Far from the worst thing they could have done and it still felt at least fitting/ pretty in character. And if your someone watching only dub I think they still manage to hit and keep the emotion of that scene just doing it in a different way.

Sevens-

As it is, Sevens is a pretty goofy show with big Saturday morning cartoons energy. From the get go it had the makings of what would be a fun dub and they nailed.

Voice choices are so good, continuing on the track of completing series and whatever changes might have been made be it dialogue or what have was nothing that I ever noticed or affected the plot/story in anyway.

Like obviously the script can't/won't be word for word exact but I'm pretty sure more often then not whatever was used or said was pretty close to/equivalent there of whatever was in the original anyway.

It's good, it's fun and silly and I can promise that despite what you may think I'd argue the vast majority of jokes come straight from the Sub itself or at the very least it keeps within the general tone /feeling of something the character would say. Never came across any moment where a joke was used that did feel quite right.

As said as it is Sevens is a pretty silly and fun show even in its original form and the Dub does a great job of keeping the spirit alive and story intact

Sub or dub I strongly recommend watching it anyway. Yes it's animated by a different group- no longer done by Studio Gallop. But honestly it fits and works. I have no idea how much was already planned out before the switch was made or any of the behind the scenes but regardless the art/animation style really fits well the tone of the series - and you can still look at it and go 'that's a yugioh'

Plus after the plot of Vrains ngl kinda nice n fun to have what Sevens brought.

Also look it's time to accept that for as much as it is a series that anyone can enjoy the target demographic IS technically kids / a younger audience (and trying to use this as a means to attract more of that younger audience get them interested)

Go Rush doesn't have a dub yet but I'm hyped and am sure it'll be a blast to.

I think I mentioned that I've been watching certain 5ds episodes in their original Japanese as well. 5ds as a season is just darker overall than most of GX or original Duel Monsters, so it feels a little more out of place when you notice something that was obviously censored.

Episodes 94 and 95 are really strong examples of this. They cover a little storyline with some of Crow's old friends, one of whom is the one he inherited his deck and duel runner from after that friend died a mysterious death. Honestly, if they didn't result in something majorly important-- Crow getting the dragon that really defines his deck (honestly, I'd kind of forgotten he was the only one who didn't have one of those)-- I'd almost be willing to argue that they might as well have not dubbed these two at all. The changes are that dramatic.

The short version is: Crow finds out his friend was dueling someone who was using a card that caused real damage. So his death was actually a murder. The episode opens up with Crow standing before that friend's grave, almost immediately flashing back to Pearson being trapped under the debris of a burning building. It's a pretty horrific death scene actually, to be thrown into that early into an episode of anything, never mind a show I think of as being for kids.

In the dub... They couldn't say Pearson was dead, so I kid you not, they censored out all the gravestones in that scene so it looks like Crow's just reflecting on the past in front of an empty field. The death scene of course is also censored out. And the official line is that Pearson "disappeared in a flash of light" during a duel.

I honestly can't decide if it's hilarious... or just sad.

But you know what? This episode also highlighted something else I've heard subbed fans complain about. Namely that Yusei doesn't have nearly as much personality in the original. And, while Yusei doesn't do a whole lot in these episodes, they were a good example of the sense of humor the dub has in general. Those jokes can be cheesy sometimes but are genuinely funny at others, it really does breathe life into this series where playing it straight sometimes leaves it feeling a little dull.

GX was so good so fucking good, it's my favorite out of the ygo spinoffs that I've watched (5d's and ArcV), it's got so many good characters and it even has a good and satisfying ending, I'm about to be so incoherent in these ramblings

Judai is a great character, he's not my favorite character out of the show but I still love him. Good boy who was so hopeful and friendly (to hide all the trauma) and then ended up having more horrific trauma and having to relearn how to be hopeful and friendly (but in a more genuine way, not simply repressing things as he used to). 10/10 would hug

With my fave being Yubel which you might guess. They were the og problematic fave. I remember being 10 and watching this dragon ruining things for everyone else like hm. I think this may awake a lot of things in me. And I watched the dub as a kid, where they are depicted as a woman, then I found out they are genderqueer in the original version and I was like even more in love. They just have all the things I love. Queer. Dramatic. Obsessive evil bastard. Mental health issue. Dragon.

And there's so many other quality characters. Steve Irwin with a whole crocodile and a magic eye whose powers are never actually elaborated upon at any point. Burned out former straight A student who did what everyone in academia eventually wishes aka become a BDSM emo and start electrocuting people. A dude who is also a dinosaur through a plot twist even Jurassic Park would never dream of. This show was throwing all the wildest concepts at us and it was fucking beautiful

But like. The thing is. Yes the character concepts were wild. Yes you had to employ a lot of suspension of disbelief at times even for a ygo show. But the character development was also so so good? And not just for the main character and maybe one or two other guys, but so many got their development! Manjoume, Shou and Kaiser, Asuka, they all got their season four spotlight to see their new goals, and even side characters like O'Brian got their small moments. Seeing them all go their ways was so beautiful

Ships are also damn good. Judai/Yubel/Johan polycule is very good. Also I can't get over the fact that this gay throuple is technically kind of canon in a very fucked up way. Most of the couples ygo wants you to ship are the hint hint nudge nudge flavor of straight shonen couples that never gets too explicit, but then GX season 3 gives you love triangle between two guys and one's guy genderqueer jealous ex who is also a dragon. Insane

Other good ships: Judai/Manjoume (hell yeah rivals), Edo/Kaiser (hell YEAH rivals), O'Brian/Jim (hunk boyfriends), Jim/Kenzan (fossil boyfriends), actually can we go for the ultimate muscle and ship O'Brian/Jim/Kenzan? But yes lots of shipping potential

Anyways it's kind of annoying there isn't a lot for GX on ao3, or at least there wasn't last I checked. There is so much fic potential. Maybe ffnet might have more, it usually does for old fandoms, but ffnet's interface frustrates me. Plus the fact that GX was kind of badly received, what with being the first spinoff, might have just cut out the number of fanworks even later on

It really is a pity tho that GX was unpopular at first. It's a really good series, it's almost a bit too goofy at first but the change in tone in later seasons is great, plus fitting too considering that it is a kind of coming age thing, all these high schoolers starting out full of hope and naivety and then getting trauma for it. The fact that it's also the only spinoff that has strong ties to DM gives it so much potential. I mean, does Manjoume's family have any particular ties to Kaiba corp? Which and how many of the GX kids would one day meet Yugi, or the rest of the DM gang? What if Judai on his travels ends up meeting people like the Ishtars? For that matter, did the Ishtars know about the multiple dimensions or the Supreme King? Because if anyone from DM was going to be aware of all the things we discover in GX, it would have been them

After seeing Kinta's comic, I felt I had to write my own post. I can't do an art. I thought about doing a oneshot but I doubt I'd do it justice and someone else probably already had and wrote that particular premise. So I'll just share my thoughts.

The truth is, part of me feels like I don't really have the right to be as impacted as I am. I never read Takahashi-Sensei's manga. I couldn't. I'm blind. I couldn't appreciate his art in any of its forms. I couldn't even watch the anime in the sub, in his native language, because I never got fluent enough in Japanese to understand it.

All I know is that, in one of the darkest times of my own life, when my family was going through difficulties I still have trouble discussing in public (Kinta you're braver than you know), Yu-Gi-Oh was there. When I ran out of Dragon Ball content, Yu-Gi-Oh was there. When I couldn't sleep, which was often—I've always struggled with sleeping at the correct times—Yugi and his friends were there in my imagination. Even when I gave up fanfic for a few years, Yu-Gi-Oh's influence was there, in Catrion and Vienata's eye-colour, in Antario's personality, in the creation of the Lanotehara.

I never saw the end of the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime. I had to find out what happened from Wikipedia, in 2012. I suspect the TV networks down here followed the US's lead and switched straight to GX. I don't think I ever saw Season 5 on free-to-air. But I fell in love with GX too, and 5D's. After that last one was so rudely cut off, however, I was disinterested in future spinoffs. I haven't watched anything past the end of Season 1 of 5D's, which I resented anyway because I'd just been hit in the gut by what 4Kids decided to make the Season finale of GX after avoiding saying characters were dying for half a season. I will never forgive whoever did that to me, and to the story being told.

In the 2010's, I found out fanfiction was a global phenomenon, and of course Yu-Gi-Oh was one of the first series I read fic for. Thanks to the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom, first on FF.net, and then Tumblr, I met many wonderful people I am glad to have in my life. @kohakuhime, @gwen-skyes, @kintatsujo, @iced-blood, @thejanestofdoes, @entamewitchlulu, @aceyanaheim, @littlemomentsofgold, @mpuzzlegirl, and others I might know less well, or didn't meet through Tumblr, or whose names I have simply forgotten at this time, but who are no less dear to me. I would not have known these people without Kazuki Takahashi's work to bring them to my attention. Yugi wished for friends, and would never know his wish was not just for him. I don't think I have enough words to express my gratitude. I'm trying, but it doesn't feel like it's remotely enough.

Thank you, Takahashi-Sensei. I hope that, wherever you are, you know how vast and positive your legacy is. Also, thanks for creating the best backstory possible for a rich kid's favourite card. Nothing will compare to the Blue Eyes White Dragon in popularity or general epicness.

KOTOR and KOTOR2 main cast and their relations to video games

this is a mostly jokey, headcanon-y "what if" in regards to if video games existed as they do irl in the star wars universe. try not to think about it too hard, and this is also presupposing neutral/light side for the core cast because that's how i played the games and i don't have the constitution to actively choose bad things in video games

revan: in terms of raw skill, they're virtually unmatched. doesn't matter if it's a fighting game, a puzzle game, nor a grand strategy game, there's an extremely solid chance they'll kick your ass. they also get extremely competitive, impeccable shit-talking game that'll throw off all but the most stoic; but they also get angry in a very funny way on the rare times they do lose. one of the few mortals that can comprehend 5d chess with multiverse time travel. is a tier whore, mains one of the high tier anime swordfighters in smash (i think lucina?)

carth: you know those boomer dads that absolutely wrecked shit up in arcades back in the 70s and 80s, but anything past the NES or SNES they just... don't get? that's carth, if you put him in front of a pacman or galaga cabinet, he'd wreck shit up, but if you showed him a smash brother or a mario he'd just squint

bastilla: i feel like if she were a gamer at all, she'd probably be into platformers and life simulation games, maybe the occasional 2D JRPG if she's feeling especially spicy. would probably play the shit out of stardew valley or kirby, ya feel me? when playing smash, she'd specifically choose one of the prettyboy anime fighters. not because they're high tier, she's probably never heard of a tier list in her life, she just likes how they look

mission vao: extremely good at video games, especially for her age. probably the only one on the ebon hawk who even comes close to rivaling revan in terms of raw skill aside from the droids, but droids playing video games is cheating tbh. probably pretty omnivorous in terms of game taste, but probably leaning towards anything violent/fast paced, e.g. shooters like DOOM or smash bros. is the reason why the crew regularly plays mario party, and since she's mildly luckier than revan and has almost as much skill, she fairly regularly wrecks revan's ass. is also probably around the right age to get wayyy into minecraft tbh. game and watch main

juhani: gamer god reflexes, absolute jack shit for gamesense. if a game requires mashing, precise movements and the like, she's likely golden; but she's terrible at reading her opponent/things that require extensive forethought. overall, pretty good at fighting games and the like, though frankly i feel like she wouldn't be a huge gamer

jolee: while old, this man is a gamer god. he's like, skyrim grandma type guy, can play games normally for the most part despite being ancient. also probably tends towards single player open world games and extremely dense RPGs, this man will play morrowind and planescape: torment until he's dead and rotting. despite being great at RPGs and singleplayer shit, it's mostly because he knows how to minmax all the technical shit/knows the exploits and glitches and all that, in terms of raw gameplay (and thus, in multiplayer games), he leaves something to be desired. if you manage to talk him into playing smash, he specifically chooses mii gunner with the sans outfit just to annoy revan specifically, figures it doesn't matter if he chooses a bad character if he's gonna lose, so he might as well get a laugh out of it

canderous: this man will relentlessly bully you for playing video games, but if you coaxed him well enough you could probably get him to play something violent, like DOOM or GTA. once you've got him in, he'll most likely relent, but now you have to deal with this boomer son of a bitch yelling at kids in GTA online and blaring rip and tear while everyone else is trying to sleep

HK-47 and T3M4: both are roughly about as good as one another at games, which is to say that they're both goddamn AIs who can consistently perform frame perfect tricks and make every game into a live TAS. you have better odds against them in, say, chess, or perhaps even 5D chess with multiverse time travel. of course, they're not programmed to be good at video games, so any game they play they'd start off bad, but they learn startlingly quickly and playing against them is generally unfair enough to be extremely unfun. both also shittalk relentlessly, though T3 is a lot more vulgar, it's just that most of the crew can't speak binary. HK tries to be a bit more "refined" in his insults, while T3 is peak 13 year old on xbox live, except more eloquent and creative since he's still got an adult tier of intellect. one last remark is that HK isn't as good at thinking in the longterm as T3, so T3 kicks his shit in at grand strategy games like civ and the like

zaalbar: is it bigoted for me to assume this man has never touched a video game in his life? i don't think so, i feel like chewbacca would wreck han's ass at video games, so i don't think it's because he's a wookie. i think zaalbar is basically just a boomer

the exile: honestly about as good as revan at games, it's just that they're not as much of a tryhard. despite this, they have inhuman amounts of luck. so, essentially, they're the Fearesome Monarcke of mario party in terms of how often they win, but everyone still has a good time since they're a good sport about it. the exception is that whenever atton gets into his Gamer Rage, the exile knows exactly how to press his buttons and thinks it's funny. they generally have the most fun playing multiplayer games, especially co-op, so naturally they tend towards a lot of nintendo stuff (though, occasionally they get the urge to pubstomp in TF2 or some other shooter.... may the force have mercy on the poor souls who face them, for they have none to spare...) zelda main in smash

brianna: until meeting the exile, this girl has never touched a video game in her life. though, once she's acclimated, she's surprisingly good. especially likes fighting games/games where you can punch, for what i hope are obvious reasons. also loves to play multiplayer games with the exile, and while she can get a bit heated she definitely tends towards more zen levels of play. would main captain falcon in smash

kreia: refuses to play the exile's party games on principal, though if she thinks she can get away with it she'll absolutely fuck with atton's controller with the force. if she does play games, i think she'd lean towards singleplayer RPGs with good writing, especially if it permits amoral characters, so she'd probably love fallout: new vegas. also? hardcore PC gamer, if her computer skill is anything to go by

visas: also hadn't touched a game before meeting the exile, though due to her blindness, she's incapable of playing games without some manner of accessibility aid. but even if she wasn't blind, i feel like she'd be kinda bad at video games, though she'd absolutely enjoy spending quality time with the others (even if she wouldn't like to admit it). while not video games necessarily, i feel like the exile would probably get something like one of those chess boards where the pieces are designed to all be differentiated from texture alone, and she'd really appreciate the gesture

atton: peak toxic gamer boy, shit-talks relentlessly, gets really into it. would honestly be a bit too much for some people (read: kreia), but most of the crew think it's funny, albeit to varying degrees. in terms of gameplay skill, he'd probably be about average? but with anything to do with probability, he's a savant at crunching the numbers (playing pazaak). would honestly consider cheating in online multiplayer games, the rascal. man mains pikachu in smash, he tries to write himself off as a tier whore but he secretly just thinks the little guy's cute

bao dur: this man is a god gamer at puzzle and fighting games specifically. in tetris, he'll stack em up like you wouldn't believe, could honestly be a speedrunner. in something like tekken, not only would he be absurdly good in terms of raw gameplay, this man can read your inputs like a goddamn book. gets really competitive with brianna, probably has that thing where you absentmindedly play tetris in your head. also, war games are absolutely too much for him, i feel like he'd react to the battlefront games in the same way that ww2 veterans allegedly react to CoD

mical: this man plays the sims, cheesy old PC point and click adventure games, and nothing else. he's a master at the oregon trail, but if you were to put him into anything with more reactive gameplay he'd crumble to dust. still plays mario party with the exile and everyone else, and while he has fun, it's because he's with good friends, in terms of gameplay he'd look like he was throwing to an outside observer

G0-T0: you'd imagine he'd be like the other droids, but no. he's that nerd boy who's all like, "heh, this is simple, all i have to do are these elementary calculations" only to fall flat on his face, every time. bro can't even play chess. the only person who will lose to mical

hanharr: i have the least experience with him out of any KOTOR companion, due to my aforementioned lack of desire to intentionally be evil in video games. but, i feel like this man wouldn't touch a video game with a twenty yard pole, both out of a lack of desire and a lack of ability. again, trying not to be bigoted against wookies, i just feel like the two we see in the KOTOR games would specifically, as individuals, be bad at video games

mira: shooters, stealth games, and any combination of the two. would love the stealth parts of the MGS games, would play the shit out of the thief games, boomer shooters like half life etc. slightly better than atton at the exile's goddamn party games, which she relentlessly taunts him with. mains snake in smash, plays incredibly lame and spammy

I will try to make the list as even as I can (so I will do 5 male and 5 female characters). The characters are going to be in no particular order.

Let's start with our girls - women rule!

1. Aki Izayoi (Yu-Gi-Oh 5ds)

Ever since I watched Yu-Gi-Oh 5d's, she has been my favorite. Aki had such a good backstory and it was heartbreaking how many hardships she had to go through before finding real friends. Her deck is also really cool and she remains my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh Girl to this day.

2. Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy tail)

Lucy is not really that strong, but she has such a huge love for her friends and that makes her so likeable in my book. Without her the guilde would still be disband.

3. Ciara Brady (Dool)

This list would be incomplete without this kickass queen. Ciara is a real badass like her mom and I really love how she is so headstrong and kind at the same time. I also admire her dedication to her husband, a reformed serial killer. She always believed in him and she stood up for him, never doubting there is good inside him.

4. Asami Sato (Legend of Korra)

I had a hard time picking between her and Katara xD Asami was introduced as a love interest and became so much more during the show. She grew a lot, started her own company and became a viable member of Team Avatar. Also she is super gorgeous, so what's not to love?

5. Hinata Hyuuga (Naruto)

Hinata was always my favorite kunoichi in Naruto. She was shy and not very strong, but she worked her butt of to impress the guy she liked. Not only that - she became a huge inspiration for her sister, so that Hinabi could become a heiress to the Hyuuga clan.

As for the males:

1. Ash Lynx (Banana fish)

To no ones surprise Ash is on this list xD He is such a complicated character and so tragic that I bawl my eyes out every time I watch Banana fish again. Yet he is resiliant and he was willing to love again after being deeply hurt. I really admire his courage and intelligence.

2. Evan Buckley (911)

Buck is such an idiot, but super duper kind on the inside. He always puts his family and friends before himself and I love his dedication to his job, because it's his dream.

3. Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto)

Naruto taught me so much! Never give up, believe in yourself and your goals. Be kind, you don't need to resort to violence, try talking it out first. Just everything about him makes him a good leader and an even better friend.

4. Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunters/MI)

Can't write a lot about him, because tumblr blocked his tag xD He is just really cool and I admire him for coming out and breaking tradition in a world that was totally against him.

5. Tendou Satori (Haikyuu)

Listen, this might be controversial as hell, but Tendou is in my top 3 Haikyuu characters. I immediately fell in love with his quirky personality. His backstory is also super sad, but he pulled through and he is proud of himself.

First, an easy way to tell if someones AI? If they re-enact a duel in their talk. Pegasus and Kaiba(DM) roleplay their DK duel, for example.

Starting with DM, an interesting note about Isis/Ishizu - Even before Yami Marik was added, she and Rishid/Odion had a conversation about how Malik/Marik was missing from Duel Links... ish. If I remember correctly, what they actually say is that Malik is missing in general, and they came to Duel Links to try and find him. While Isis has evidence pointing to her being an AI clone, Rishid has no damning evidence either way. Its entirely possible that Rishid is the real Rishid, and Malik has actually gone missing. I wonder if (Yami) Malik's inclusion in the game was considered in poor taste and got backlash.

Also, its evident that The Real Kaiba used Kaiba (DM) as his avatar for a while, before DSOD world was complete. Oddly, Roland/Isono seems to listen to Mokuba(DM) as his superior despite Mokuba being an AI copy, which is just funny

Onto GX - Its true that most characters are pretty ambiguous, but theres some that are obvious. Judai and Yubel (separate, not Yubel/Judai) are both AI, Cronos/Crowler does the RP thing, Ryo/Zane is still a butt much, but thats about it. The only one who has any indication they're real is... The Chazz. Yes, Black Thunder seems to be the genuine article, if and only because of the company he brings with him. Ojamas Yellow, Green, and Black wouldnt be there if Manjoume was an AI, and even if they were they wouldnt Leak Yubel's Event like Yellow did.

If you're a digital copy of something already digital, and the original is gone... is there a functional difference calling you a copy? Or is it fair to consider you the original? the funny ourple blob boi is a philisophical nightmare and he'd probably enjoy knowing he is.

OH FUCK YEAH!! Thanks a bunch, this is a FANTASTIC compilation of interesting lore bits; I didn't know a lot of these! (as it goes, having not played the game for like...the first four years it was out dfhghsdfg) THE FACT CHAZZ MIGHT BE THE REAL DEAL, OF ALL CHARACTERS??!? ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. PLEASE. proving his humanity thanks to Ojama Yellow. truly only the best for The Chazz.

The thing about if a character reenacts a duel in their dialogue being a good benchmark for whether or not they're AI is fascinating....the brings up an interesting side-tangent with that when you have two confirmed AI characters dueling each other, and their dialogue isn't a perfect duel reenactment but still implies an established dynamic and history (like aporia and z-one's dialogue when they duel each other /obligatory comment about my old men). The way the AI themselves are evolving and talking with each other and being their own variations of these people....that's a can of worms all its own.

Arc-V's been such a weird case because even if everyone there happens to be AI, they're so kneedeep in trying to figure out how the memory cloning process works, what brings a person into this world, that you wonder if there's going to be some sort of realization of the self for one of those guys on the horizon. Could be fun if so!!!!

very very interested to see where the VRAINS implications go cuz that is SUPREMELY INTERESTING lore (especially for a fucking FREEMIUM TRADING CARD GAME ONLINE) and I want to see what they do with it. havent even SEEN vrains yet but I like watching these characters try to solve a mystery that should have never been their problem in the first place. great stuff!

SO I FINALLY FINISHED 5D’S! And what better way to celebrate than to go through my favorite characters as…briefly as I can

Let’s work it up from 10 to 1

10- Jack

Was gonna go with lucchiano but who am I kidding Jack’s great. He’s a drama queen with an even more dramatic wardrobe. Never afraid to express himself and just bluntly blurt out what he thought.

His obsession with Cup ramen is on another level but what can I say? Love is love, Jack x cup ramen for life *wipes tears*

But seriously speaking he’s great. His very first line was enough proof of that. He just… apologized for being late then declared “I AM KING” like the…king he is.

My favorite Rival character still remains Manjoume… and… Yeah I still prefer Kaiba over Jack but damn was he a good rival.

Like he has to be the only Rival so far with an actual past with the Main character, no? That was pretty interesting because usually, the protagonist meets the rival somewhere during the first season and we go off from there. But here we had to go through their backstory to know what their relationship was fully like. Nice touch.

9- Aki

Hands down my favorite female protagonist so far. I adore Anzu and feel neutral enough about Asuka but Aki? NAH MAN AKI’S AMAZING. I think 5D’s just does the best job with its female characters. Like it actually gives them big enough roles. I loved how Aki got her own episodes…be it the D-wheel ones or just… fillers.

Her crush on Yusei was justified, at least it seems so to me, and honestly never got obnoxious. Sure she had a moment here and there but it was honestly never a bad thing. Hell faith shipping in general isn’t exactly a bad Idea.

Speaking of shipping, is anyone going to talk about her little frienshipmaybemore moments with Crow? No? Ok…

But anyway, overall, SHE’S AMAZING AND I LOVE HER. There was more to her than some boring pining love interest and it shows with each episode. So when people say she has a great personality, they’re actually talking about her personality. AKI RULES

8- Mikage

Would’ve been way WAY higher on the list if the thing with Jack was thrown out the widow.

That being said I think she’s the more mature of the Jack-crazy trio. Like sure she was just as into him as the other two, but in some scenes she was a lot more tolerable.

But that honestly might just be my bias towards this amazing woman speaking.

She’s devoted to her work, gentle, caring, gorgeous and just all around a wonderful character to see.

I loved most of her scenes in the series, and the fact that there was more to her than just the jack part. She actually had an important part to play in many episodes and honestly proved herself to be a very fun character. I just wish they gave a her little more screentime than what she got.

A lot of lost potential there- I mean come on.

7- Rua /Lua

He reminds me of Judai WAY too much. LIKE WAAAAY too much not to be on this list. The guy’s adorable. And I love how they made him the emotional one. Like they could’ve gone with the “the boy is always rowdy and tOUGH” stereotype, but they didn’t. Sure, ruka (who I don’t like as much) was much more gentle, but it was much easier to see Rua cry than it was to see her do so. It’s just fun is all.

I also adore his deck and that little theme that played whenever he dueled… Plus his relationship with Jack and Yusei…GOLD GOLD.

6- Ushio

I made a whole post about Him, You think he wouldn’t be in my Top 10? Well think again. Great development would see through again.

5- Sherry Leblanc

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA SHERRY.

What you just witnessed in the line above is my internal reaction to literally any scene this beautiful badass woman happens to be in.

She’s just amazing. She has this really… tough energy IDK HOW TO DESCRIBE IT BUT SHE’S A REALLY INTIMIDATING WOMAN. But not in a bad way, oh nonononono in a REALLY REALLY GOOD WAY OKAY.

Her character arcs and episodes somehow felt…really separate from the whole team 5D’s shenanigans even though they were basically connected…

Like she had her own motivation that didn’t particularly rely on bonds, but was still willing to accept and even form a bond with the whole team.

Revenge is kinda hot ngl.

Okay no it’s not. But seeing a vengeful character that WASN’T played off as evil or particularly wrong amidst a bunch of friendship is magic ones was pretty refreshing.

The moment she took her helmet off when dueling yusei I was HOOKED and so was Aki but shhhhhh.

But damn I love what they did with her at the end, Rushed as it may have been. It took her joining with Z-one briefly and dueling Aki and Crow ( a very underrated duo btw) to realize that maybe thinking of the past and only the past was not a very good idea.

Anyway love her. And her duels are always a delight to watch.

4- Placido

Before he showed up, sherry was supposed to be 4th but here we are. Placido Placido Placido. I want to make it clear that…I really couldn’t care less about Aporia as a whole. But Placido and Lucchiano were pretty fun characters.

Now I finally get to talk about my beloved.

This dude was…the biggest mood. EVER.

He would hang up in that third one’s face like it was nothing and constantly ignore his boring ass. Oh. You have a plan? Ok. I don’t care. It’s boring. I’m placido and I’ll do what I want. Kiss my D-wheel ass.

He has a lot of hilariously sassy lines, which include and I quote:

“I don’t know what god wants you to do.”

“But I won’t accept it!”

The guy just does not care and I’m living for it.

Not to mention his bee analogies which- Why have I not seen anyone point out????? BEE ANALOGIES COME ONNNNNNNN

3- Kiryuu

Edgy dude with pretty hair. Also gay. Also the crash town arc. Need I say more?

I will anyway.

Honestly dark signer Kiryuu was pretty fun to me with all the crazy laughter and stuff…

Then past/ flashbacks Kiryuu was just as interesting but in a completely different way. Sure he didn’t get as many episodes or screentime as the rest, but what I saw of him was more than enough for me to care about the Character. Like unlike the old satellite gang (Rally and the other two whose names I can’t even remember) I actually gave a shit about this guy when bad stuff happened to him.

Not to mention his growth. Like…He went through reverse/ negative development, then uphill by the end of the signers’ ark with all the…dying in your hands gayly stuff, then downhill again by the beginning of the crosstown arc….aaaaand back up and higher than ever by the end of it. Basically the fact that his development wasn’t always constant just added some spice.

Plus his dynamic with his ex-teammates…team….satisfaction (Try saying that with a straight face) was always pretty entertaining, especially his with Yusei.

Speaking of which...

2- Yusei

With all my talk about him…and…my profile picture…and URL, it may come as a surprise that he’s not number 1 here, but honestly it’s so close you could call it a tie.

Your favourite non-canon ship?

Probably Ushio/ Trudge x Mikage/ Mina. I like the cops together; its cute and a better relationship for Mikage.

Is there a ship you didn’t like at first but ultimately started shipping?

Ya know, now that I think about it, I never really liked the Yusei x Kiryu/ Kalin ship, but I'm not so against it now that I reflect on it. Its got some good angst in it, I tell you what. And it feels more likely and interesting than Yusei x Bruno (which I still don't ship).

What is the rarest rare pair (that you ship)?

I'd guess it would be either Yusei x Sherry or Crow x Aki.

For Yusei x Sherry, it seemed pretty heavily implied that Sherry had a little bit of a thing for him. When she thinks of turbo dueling connecting their hearts, she imagines the two of them naked. Yeah, it might just be a metaphor, but she's still picturing him with no clothes. Sherry also seems quite focused on Yusei and, if I remember correctly, part of the reason she sided with Z-One at the end was to prevent Yusei's prophesied death. I'm not sure if its an unrequited crush that is canon or not or if its rare, but I don't see a lot of people talking about it.

For Crow x Aki, I do like them mostly as friends and definitely prefer Aki with Yusei, but I do think Crow and Aki have the foundation to become a good couple. But I think I've only ever seen one fanfic that had them as a ship, so I'm assuming its not very popular.

Name a popular ship you don’t get the appeal of.

Any variation of Yusei and/or Jack and/or Crow so Kizunashipping, Kingcrabshipping, etc. They were raised together as foster brothers so I see them in a sibling dynamic and I adore that brotherly bond for them. There's nothing wrong with shipping them together though since they aren't actually related, so for those who like those ships, go ahead and enjoy them. They're just not my cup of tea.

What is your most fluffy + happy ship?

... All of them have angst... It's kinda impossible to not have angst in 5Ds since it was a pretty serious Yugioh series. I guess Crow x Aki would have the least angst, at least involving them together as a couple.

What is your most angsty ship?

Probably, Jack x Carly for obvious reasons. Carly literally got murdered, Jack agonized over not knowing what exactly happened to her, he finds out she's his enemy, has to duel her and attempts to die with her, has her die in his arms, and admits multiple times that she was the woman he loved, even having that be a big part of his speech in the final duel against Godwin.

And then the next arc they acted like none of that happened which is angst inflicted personally to us through bad writing, not from something that was part of a realistic flow in the story for the characters.

A non-canon ship that should be canon?

Hmmm, I don't think there's anything I ship that I think should be canon. The only thing I can think of is Ushio x Mikage, but Ushio did have a canon one-sided crush on Mikage so its technically not non-canon.

Your oldest ship; the one you’ve shipped for the longest time?

I knew about Yusei x Aki and Jack x Carly for a long time before I really watched the show and I thought they were pretty cute without having much context, so I guess they count.

What ship represents the kind of relationship you’d love to have?

Yusei x Aki. They both have done their best to help each other and they have such a great level of trust too. I feel like at the very end, in that famous goodbye scene, they are so in sync that they don't even need words to express how they feel. I want that level of familiarity and relaxed coexistence.

Is there a ship that makes your skin crawl?

Lua/ Leo x Luca/ Luna. Literally, they are twins, not to mention little kids. I do get that they are super latched on to each other and I've been weirded out by Lua blushing at Luca at least once, but still, come on guys. Its just gross.

What is a character you can only imagine in one particular ship?

Well, the only canon character I ship with Crow is Aki, but I do ship him with an OC I made in the 3DS game, Over the Nexus. So instead I'll say I can only see Ushio and Mikage with each other. Ushio really doesn't have any other options and I don't ship Mikage with Jack, who would be her only other option.

What is your favourite canon ship?

Hnnnn, that's tough because both Yusei x Aki and Jack x Carly are amazing. Hmmm, if I absolutely had to pick one... UGH. I CAN'T. Seriously, I can not do it. I love Yusei and Aki for their support and trust in the other, but then I love Jack and Carly's cute dynamic of big, intimidating guy loves goofy, ball of sunshine girl. Both? Both. Both is good.

Name a ship that deserved more content.

Actually, I think I might have to say Ushio x Mikage here. I really liked the idea of them getting together, but the idea gets sort of dropped after Ushio overhears her trying to confess her feelings to Jack. Maybe it got mentioned or alluded to once or twice after that, but eventually it just disappeared. I also haven't seen any fanart, fanfics, or anyone even talking about them that much. I think they could have made a great background couple and deserve more content.

Is there a ship you feel gets undeserved hate in fandom?

I've seen some hate for Jack x Mikage. I don't even ship it, but I think its hated a little too intensely by some people. It is unhealthy maybe on Mikage's side, but you could easily spin it to not be. I don't think its that bad, its just not for me.

What is the first ship you had?

Again, I knew about Yusei x Aki and Jack x Carly beforehand. I probably shipped Yusei x Aki first.

Is there a ship that made you realize something about yourself?

Nope.

Is there a type of ship you always go for?

Just whatever strikes a cord with me I guess.

Is there a ship the writers have ruined for you?

Freaking Jack x Carly. Don't get me wrong, I still ship it, but the writers just acting like none of their development happened was stupid, poorly handled, and honestly insulting.

Is there a ship the fandom has ruined for you?

Maybe Crow x Sherry. I saw people talking that one up like crazy, but they didn't even interact till the very end and, even then, I didn't think it was anything ship worthy. I mean, she tried to use his kids against him. Crow had more chemistry with Aki in that duel than he did with Sherry. I just don't get it.

Have you ever created fan created content for a ship?

I tried writing a Jack x Carly fic, but I got kinda stuck and wrote other non-ship stuff involving Jack instead. I might go back to that old fic again, but I also have a new idea for a story with them. I may just do both. I also want to do something with Yusei and Aki and Crow and my OC at some point, I just need to come up with something I feel like I can write for them.

I've also drawn Crow with the OC, but only once and was just a doodle to see if I could draw them decently.

Favourite thing you’ve ever created for a ship?

Well, the only thing I've properly created was a doodle so I have to say that by default. Although, I was pretty satisfied with it. lol

Is there a ship you’ll never admit you have?

I... sort of ship Crow with myself. I know I ship him with my OC, but she's not really me; she's her own person. I have a lot of self-ships and I'm always embarrassed to admit to them, but I still do. I can't help falling in love with Crow. You can't blame me; he's absolutely adorable.

Have you ever started shipping a ship because of the fans?

I started shipping Yusei x Aki and Jack x Carly a little bit before I started watching the show because of fans praising them so yes.

What is one scene you want to see happen for all your ships?

Well, obviously they need to get to married and have children and live happy lives together. That's the best happy ending for couples.

Is there a ship you wish you didn’t know existed?

Lua x Luca. Because ew. That and Divine/ Sayer x Aki. I don't know if anyone legit ships that but I have seen it in tags for fics and it disgusts me. I hope its only shown to be a bad thing because that is certainly not a healthy relationship.

Name a ship that ended like you wanted it to.

Yusei x Aki. Yep, I actually liked that last scene between them. I think it conveyed that they clearly loved each other without them having to say it aloud. Words weren't needed. I think its safe to say they got together at some point.

Name a ship that deserved better in the end.

Oh, Jack x Carly! There's no other ship to put here. The writers did them so dirty. He just left her behind with the other two fangirls because 'women are a distraction' and she was just going to wait for him to come back? Dark Signer Arc Jack would never leave her behind. She's 'the woman he loves', REMEMBER WRITERS?! REMEMBER WHEN HE SAID THAT?!

Anyway, I'm freaking salty as hell.

Is there a character you have several ships for?

Aki I ship with Yusei, Sherry, and Crow.

I guess Crow is tied with her because I ship him with her, my OC, and myself.

What is the ship you ignore 98% of canon for?

I mean, all us Scoopshippers ignore the WRGP because of Jack x Carly sucking. I actually don't hate that whole arc, but it definitely has a lot of problems. The biggest one is Jack x Carly just suddenly not being a thing.

Is there a ship you like but you dislike the fandom?

I guess I get a little annoyed with Faithshippers complaining about Yusei and Aki not confessing their feelings at the end (because they didn't need to say it ya'll. They knew), but I don't dislike the whole fandom for that.
