“It sounded as if you were having a nightmare. If anything, you should be thanking me.”

Blushing, you look away as you slip your feet into your slippers. “I was. Thank you.” Ningún problema, she cheers. Peeking out of the bathroom located in her childhood room with toothpaste, you ask, “Is anyone else awake?” The Sainz sister shakes her head.

“I think we might be the first ones.” The way your face drops has her giggling. “But that’s fine! It’s good to get ahead of the long day that awaits.” Wiping your mouth with a towel you hum. If you say so.

“Can you bring me a glass of water? I think I might be getting a migraine.” Puppy eyes plead as she puts her hands up in silent prayer. 

“Ay, ay, ay. You’re lucky I love you.” 

Walking into the quiet kitchen, you pour a cup of water. Setting it down for a moment, you look out to where caters arrive, helpers running back and forth with decorations in hand. Your stomach grows queasy at the sight.

“You’re already awake?”

Startled, you jump as you face the towering man. In a simple black Puma shirt, shorts and running shoes, stands Carlos. Cheekbones tinted your favorite shade of pink. 

“After being brutally woken up by your sister, yes. I’d much rather still be sleeping with the little sheeps if it were up to me.” 

Chuckling, he reaches out for the glass of water just a few inches away. You don’t bother correcting him, already deciding it was his to keep and you could pour a new one. You click your tongue.

“Isn’t it bad luck?” He raises a brow. Licking your lips you say, “You know…” you point out to the white scenery, “Wedding day and all that?”

His gaze seems warm as he playfully rolls his eyes, placing the glass into the nearby sink. “Not unless I see my bride…I think that’s how the story goes.”

Forcing yourself to look away, you fill up a new cup, already backing up. “Of course. Good thing she’s still asleep.” Pointing up the stairs, you try to fake a smile. “I-I should go.” 

He nods. “Don’t let me keep you any longer.”

Your heart feels as if it's bruising up with his innocent words. Walking away, you can’t help but turn around once more, finding him still staring. 

“Don’t be nervous. You’ll be fine.”

Cuffing his sleeves, Carlos stares into the mirror, taking in his appearance. Black and white suit suffocating him. 

“Fits you like a glove.”

Spinning around, he winces as he finds Lando leaning against the door frame. “Could be a bit looser, but yeah, I suppose.” Making his way up to him, he leans in for a quick pat. “I hope that I’m still breathing by the end of the night.”

“Ha! Let’s hope.” Flicking off a few pieces of dust off  his friend, the Brit beams. “Either way, none of these jitters will matter at the end of the day. Think of this way; you’re going to be married to the love of your life.” His face wanders to a place of confusion. “When did you guys meet again?”

Carlos smiles at the reminiscing moment. “When we were 10.” Lando’s eyes almost popped out of his face from the shock. I for sure thought it was when you were both 26! The Spaniard tries to hide his stutters. “You’re right! I was 26 - she was 26.” Turning to face the wall, he mumbles, “Good memory.”

Sighing, Ana tips her heels. “Está bien, but please just be nice to her, okay? She’s my friend. You only just met her! She’s super nice once you get to know her.”

“Maybe don’t barge into my room next time,” he shoots back as he grabs his duffel bag, filled to the brim with all his karting accessories. Fair enough, she squeals. Already skipping out, she starts making her way up the stairs, where you wait for her. With one final thing in mind she spins around to where Carlos stands. 

“Being 10 doesn’t make you cool.”

the disconnect between the storytelling of the show and of the fandom

lately, I've been thinking about storytelling and storytellers in the context of 911.

like, there's two sides to this storytelling business, right?

there's the small group writers and showcreators who have an idea for the characters and plots and have to come up with a way to share those ideas within the constraints of a network television series

and then there's us, a massive international community with a wide-range of life experiences, who watch their show and then go on to tell our own story about it.

and i wonder if we're always watching the story they're telling.

im not even necessarily talking about the buddie goggles right now.

what got me thinking about this was ana flores.

and the one scene the fandom likes to pretend sealed her fate (when in actuality, let's be quite candid, it was the fact that she was a beautiful woman who dared to date eddie instead of allowing him to remain a viable option for canonical/fanonical offscreen cannoodling with buck)

"there's a lot to be said for getting back on the horse, but there's also some value in learning that you don't like horses." eddie: "i'm sorry?" "sometimes, our limitations tell us when to stop. but sometimes, they can show us where to look next." (romantic, feelingsy song starts playing) "today, he falls off the skateboard. but tomorrow, he writes the great american novel."

see, the problem here is that this is CLEARLY meant to be viewed as wise and deep advice. as a moment of connection between ana and eddie... the way the scene is cut, the music that plays in the background, the intense eye-contact between the two characters, the way eddie reacts to her words... we're meant to enjoy the simmering tension and potential between them...

but... it's not great and deep advice, not really. it's been pointed out that it comes off as ableist. and ana is supposed to be a teacher at this excellent inclusive institution; she is meant to have experience with children of different abilities feeling frustrated and wanting to do the same things other children are doing... someone on here pointed out that if they were the teacher, they would seek to understand what need christopher was trying to fullfil by getting on the skateboard and help him achieve it by other means

but what ana comes up with is this awkward horse metaphor that doesn't really make sense for the situation, and a condescending: "awwww, well, im sure he's the next hemingway"

BUT SEE, THAT'S NOT THE STORY THE SHOW IS TELLING US. the show is ostensibly framing this scene as romantic and great and deep. and that is NOT ana's fault. the character of ana didn't travel to our reality, didn't block the scene, didn't cut it and add the soundtrack. that's on the showcreators.

but somehow, it's really difficult for us to see it that way when it comes to ana.

in a way that it's not when it comes to Hen, poor little Mara and the Doberman.

because we know Hen and Karen, and we like them.

so we awkwardly shuffle around, side-eyeing each other, quietly nudging each other and going: "bit of a fail that, huh? kinda a weird thing to do on the part of the show, huh? comparing a little Black girl to a dog...why did they do that???"

or there was an excellent post floating around about whether Buck and Eddie realize they can say no to sex, that their consent matters.

"what if i come home and she wants to haaaaaave..." "well, you'll get through it somehow," says buck with an amused grin on his face.

see, the problem isn't necessarily whether the characters know that their consent matters, but whether the showcreators do. because this is clearly meant to be viewed as a joke.

eddie is a macho guy, who tends to keep his cool in difficult situations, so it's funny when you see him freaking out over the fact that his girlfriend wants to have sex with him and he doesn't want to have sex with her because her former chosen-profession taps into his well of Messy Catholic Feelings.

isn't it? isn't that just fucking hilarious?

and the answer to that is: no. it's not funny to any part of the audience who's ever felt pressured (by a partner, by society, by their own expectations) to want or to have sex.

but does the show realize that?

i'm sorry but i don't think so. this is the show that framed dr.wells sexually assaulting buck during a therapy session as a joke to casually bring up and needle him over later, that felt the need to reassure us that chimney and maddie can and do have wild, passionate monkey sex (you remember, albert teasing chim, then the hotel with the revolving room, etc), that had karen ask hen what the point of a relationship was if the couple weren't having sex...

now, i genuinely don't think the showcreators mean to be hurtful, or harmful. i don't think they realise how all these things come off. because they're a fairly small group of people from Los Angeles, America, and are working within the constraints of a network television show

(and the point of the Eddie and Buck scene was Buck coming out to Eddie, so maybe they felt Buck saying: "you know, you can tell her you don't want to have sex, right? that's allowed." would fraction the focus of it? idk)

but what happens is that there's this disconnect between the story they're telling us and the story we continue to tell among ourselves.

when it comes to the characters we like, we tend to ignore the unpleasant meanings and messages in relation to the character, or we retcon it in fanfic, or we Fix-it with some heart-to-hearts and apologies.

(for example, i haven't seen many fics that show athena being a Cop as not-a-great-thing. but are we really ok with her saying "i wasn't on their side, but i understood their side." when her son expresses some reasonable dissatisfaction with her reaction to a cop pointing a gun at him and michael? or are we just ignoring it because we love angela basset?)

when it comes to characters we are predisposed to dislike, this disconnect makes us dislike them even more. which leads to the writing of bashing fics, and in some cases harassing the performers online jfc do not do that people that's never ok

(of course, some characters are hated justifiedly imao, like the buckley parents and chimney's father...)

maybe this is the frustration that makes for such a prolific and active fandom?

I don't know.

but I think it's something to keep in mind when watching the show. because that disconnect is always going to be there and I know that for my own personal mental health, it's easier and nicer to believe that a group of RL people might be just a bit ignorant at times, than that my favourite characters are massive assholes unpredictably and randomly

Cath-’s Mixtape; 2007:

Spring 2007. Catherine and I met up again two months after we first met. It took me a lot of curiosity and a phone call to see why I hadn’t even seen a message from her since: she was still somewhat in isolation after she came back from upstate New York to treat her anorexia. She was surprised yet happy to hear from me and in no time we met up at a well-known ice-cream parlor.

Somehow giving each other mix CDs came into play. I had given her Nine Inch Nails’ Still (2002), Jesu’s self-titled record (2004), and Unsane’s Visqueen (2007) which just came out the same month. In return, she gives me this.

This was the stuff Rolling Stone articles and rock radio was made of. Throw in some 20 year-old teenage angst with some slick trendy fare such as Morrissey, Siouxie Sioux, and Elliott Smith and you have exactly what Catherine was feeling, thinking, and going through during that time. Granted most of this is pop fare, but I’m willing to roll the dice that if someone reading this would get a hold of everything seen here, one would really feel like Catherine right now. That is the effect of mix CDs: more often than not it’s a mirror image of someone; a listen, not a glimpse, into someone’s soul now experienced when you hear it.

If anyone is keeping score: we played with crayons and coloring mats. We had to endure an immature family and their loud unruly children all sitting next to us. And she turned me down when I asked her out, but she did gave me a hug to end the night.

5. What is a popular fan interpretation that you don’t like?

Popular? 🤔 Huh, I check our fandom tags almost every day so it's not that I live under a rock but... I just see many headcanons here and there - just this. If you mean what I saw here more than few times, well, then I can think about some examples.

But it's not that I don't like other people's headcanons - I respect them ❤️ and I'm excited when people share their thoughts with me (and while I'm reading f.e. fics I'm only focused on author's vision and as empath I can feel/try to understand their headcanon even if sometimes it's not what I usually think about characters/agree with). It's just about me having different feelings, just that.

So, speaking about different feelings. Sometimes I really try but just can't see something. Well, life, it happens. There's f.e. Doris' case and her relationship with Danny and Cath (I can't see "Doris doesn't like Danno, she prefers Cath", sorry ❤️). There's f.e. Danny's and Steve's love life/orientation (I share "they're not that straight" 😉 with our fandom and I too see them as queer in some way - but not in the same way as most of fans do, ohh it's so complicated that I even created new labels to name my feelings about McDanno 😂). There's Danno and pineapples 😆 (Oh, I saw "Danny hates pineapples" so many times that I needed to do some meta about him loving and eating them 😂).

Hm, I'm not a big fan of "Danny is so delicate, special snowflake, so different than Steve and all the team, he's the weakest part of the team". To me it's what Lenkov tried to do but Scott (and Alex) sabotaged.

And... I can't imagine "one night stand" in McDanno's case. Definitely not, sorry ❤️ And not with Danny's anxiety (oh, I feel that even before the first kiss there could be a long talk aka What it will change and What it can't change and Are you really sure you want me and Ok I'm just panicking I know we'll be together forever babe 😂).

But really, my "can't imagine" doesn't mean that I avoid it or something like that. I can still talk about it, read about it and be happy that someone wanted to share it. It's like "I've got my tea but ohhh babe, show me your coffee, you make your coffee so well! And you babe, it's nice to see you with your milk shake! Oh, hi darling, you need to tell me what's in your juice, you know!".

9. Do you have a favorite case the team worked on?

Ayyy... Can I say John's case? Please?! 🥺 Well, technically they weren't Five-O yet but still, they're already a team, right? Yeah, I mean Pilot. Pilot my beloved 😍 The best McDanno episode ever 😍 But I truly loved other cases too, so many cases... Stakeout of course! 😁 And ayy, very underrated but very dear to me: Sang Min's case. You know, when he was accused of murder and McDanno with their Ohana did everything to help him and they believed him and, gosh, they showed him "you know, sometimes you piss us off but you are a nice guy too, you are OUR guy, our Ohana you know". When Sang was damn touched I was touched too, I really cried with him. I love his relationship with these people, how he has changed thanks to them and how much they like each other - cops and ex criminal. Never say never, people are people ❤️

21. What is a thing in fanworks that you eat up every single time?

I think I just crave McDanno - the more, the better 😄 (from earlier seasons - always!). Angsty. Happy. Goofy. Just McDanno. I'm also always excited when I see McDanno's silver Camaro (cause Misty lives, ok? 😜). And cop!Steve, Steve being happy in Five-O. And Ohana: Kame, Gerard, Mary, Ellie, Odell, Toast, Sang... I love these people so much so I'm always happy when I see them in fics, fanarts and so on 😊
