This lavishly decorated piece is a Byzantine bracelet dating from the 6th century. The Byzantines created complex and precious pieces, such as this bracelet, which is encrusted with expensive gemstones and pearls, demonstrating the wealth of the Byzantine empire.
The openwork technique, also called Opus interrasile (meaning ‘to scrape in between), is done by punching or piercing holes in the metal with a chisel or other sharp tool, resembling delicate, lace-like patterns.
Private Collection, North America

A few sachets, voguish among the court ladies of the Tang dynasty. It seems that in skill, the then jewelers were much superior to those in the next few centuries. The sachets were worn as pendants.

Carnelian rhinoceros amulet
Egypt, Ptolemaic or Roman Period, 200 BCE - 200 CE
L. 1.9 × W. 0.4 × H. 0.9 cm (3/4 × 3/16 × 3/8 in.)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
ℹ️ Both Black & White Rhinoceroses (both two-horned species) were native to Egypt in pre-dynastic times, but were likely extinct by the Early Dynastic Period. Still, rhinoceroses remained known to later Egyptians through contacts and trade with other regions, and likewise were known in the Greco-Roman world, including being imported (usually through Egypt) and put on display in Rome itself.

Chalice of the Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis, 100BCE
This chalice, originally a fluted sardonyx cup carved in ancient Alexandria, Egypt, was transformed 1,200 years later by Abbot Suger into a jeweled vessel for sacramental wine at the abbey church of Saint-Denis, Paris.
Set in gilded silver and adorned with gems and pearls, it blends ancient craftsmanship with medieval devotion, featuring a solemn Christ medallion flanked by the Alpha and Omega.

Worldbuilding challenges I did expect: History and political environment.
Worldbuilding challenges I did not expect: I, a soil & geology student, accidentally getting side-tracked and fixating on developing the area's climate, geological buildup, geological history and development, current geological phenomena, geological relations to land use, land use in economical and trading context, influences of climate on said land use, I could go on.
