Joshua walked into the cafeteria alert, his head held up and gaze searching for a familiar brunet head amongst the thick crowd in the room. Usually he’d be late, probably held up talking to a teacher or waiting for Vernon, but after the experiences of the past week, he knew better than to wait up for his distracted friend.
“Sorry!” he yelled after almost colliding with a girl and making her spill her banana milk down the front of her shirt. She glared at him as he gripped his tray tighter and winced, quickly shouldering through the group before him to get to his table and as far out of her reach as possible. “Coming through!”
He reached the empty table as the same time Vernon did, both of them putting down their trays at the same moment. Joshua raised his eyebrows, letting a small smile form on his face as he slipped into the seat next to Vernon’s. “The prodigal returns,” he announced. “Where have you been, dude? I’ve barely seen you all week.”
Vernon shrugged, tapping his fingers on the table. He seemed distracted, eyes darting around the cafeteria as if waiting for something, or someone, to appear. Joshua knew that look—it was the one that indicated that something bad was about to happen, most likely within a ten-meter radius. “Um,” the blue-haired boy muttered with a small frown, “I don’t have to worry about that Rhino guy busting down the door, do I?”
“What?” Vernon glanced at him with wide eyes, as if only just having noticed he was here. “Uh, no. At least, I don’t think so.” He smiled sheepishly, hands sliding over the tabletop to grip his tray again, though Joshua guessed it was just to stop them from moving. “Sorry, what were you saying?”
Joshua sighed, placing a fingertip against the bridge of his glasses and sliding them up his sweat-slicked nose. It wasn’t even hot out, but being in a room packed with sweaty, hormonal bodies will do that to you. “I was asking you what you’ve been doing to keep busy in the last few days.”
“Nothing much,” Vernon said, twirling his plastic fork. He looked distracted, maybe a little tired, but despite the dark circles under them, his eyes were alight. “Because of the new team, I have to do all of these S.H.I.E.L.D. training projects with them, and they keep giving up these random hero assignments like stopping robberies and rescuing cats from trees. You know, the usual.” He shrugged. “It’s kind of annoying that I have barely any creative freedom with my fighting these days.”
“Maybe it’s for the best,” Joshua quipped. “If you call flying solo creative freedom.”
His best friend grinned. “Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you,” he said, suddenly excited as he leaned forward on his elbows, eyes glittering. “I got a job in Dr. Connors’s lab.”
“That biotech guy who worked with your dad?” Joshua raised his eyebrows, looking impressed. “When?”
“Last Tuesday.” Vernon’s eyes had taken on an almost dreamy quality as he talked about his new job. “It’s just the post of research assistant, pretty basic stuff really, but he lets me take part in some of the data collection sometimes. Man, you should look at all the amazing equipment in his lab. He’s got a BOD incubator, an electrophoresis chamber—”
“Vernon.” Both the boys looked up at the source of the voice, which stood before them in the form of Felix Liu (or, as he was better known, Felix Lee). The boy’s eyes glazed over Joshua as if he wasn’t even there before coming to rest on Vernon’s with a kind of communicative intensity. “You’re wanted in the principal’s office.”
Vernon stared at the boy for a few moments, looking confused, and Felix raised his eyebrows, glaring at him meaningfully. Joshua glanced between them, wanting to say something but a little apprehensive of doing so. “The principal’s office?” Vernon echoed, a defiant note in his voice. “Why?”
“How am I supposed to know?” Felix asked, scowling. “Coulson himself stopped me in the hallway, so it must be urgent. You should probably go talk to him.”
Something like realization flickered across Vernon’s features. “Oh,” he said. “Oh, right. You’re right.” He got up suddenly, casting an unsure look at Joshua as if he’d just remembered there was a witness to their exchange. He glanced at Felix with a conflicted look in his eye, clutching the back of the chair uncertainly. “Uh, there’s something I should tell you—”
“Tell me later,” Felix cut him off impatiently, waving him away. “Just go.”
Vernon glanced at Joshua again, teeth worrying at his bottom lip. He opened his mouth, looking like he was about to say something, then stopped himself. He shook his head, chest deflating as he let go of a long breath, before turning around and making his way towards the exit.
Joshua kept his eyes on his retreating back as he went, not turning even when he felt Felix pull up a chair opposite him. Only when Vernon finally disappeared behind the double doors did he turn to his food, which lay untouched on his plate. Something was up, and he had a good idea about what it was.
“Aren’t you going to eat that?” Felix asked, making Joshua look up at the sound of his voice. The boy’s cheeks were puffed out, mouth already filled with whatever they were supposed to consume by way of food for lunch. When Joshua didn’t answer, he cocked an eyebrow. “Well?”
“I don’t feel like eating,” the blue-haired boy murmured, but unwrapped his sandwich anyway. The new kids had started eating at his, Luce’s and Vernon’s usual table in the past week, which Joshua was completely okay with—except he usually had at least one of his old friends to keep things from becoming too awkward. Between the three of them, Joshua was probably the one with the worst social skills.
He took a tiny bite of his sandwich, and glanced despairingly at the door, waiting for Luce to show up. Heck, even Yeji or that other guy—Yangyang?—would have been welcome. Felix had always struck him as the silent type, but he didn’t yet know if it was a strong silent or a sensitive silent. Eating this way was awkward, to say the least, but the only topic of conversation Joshua could think of was probably not fit for discussion in public.
Ah, to hell with that. “You’re Iceman, right?”
Felix looked up so quickly Joshua heard something crack in his neck. He felt a sudden, sharp, bite-like pain in the back of his right hand, which had been lying much too close to Felix’s tray. “Ouch!” Joshua pulled back his hand with a hiss, cradling it against his chest. “What the hell was that for?”
“Sorry, I—” Felix stopped with a small scowl. “Hey. Don’t go around saying stuff like that!”
“So you are Iceman,” Joshua said. “Can’t really deny it now.”
Felix blushed at the statement. The color that flooded his cheeks was startlingly bright against the pallor of his skin. “Who told you that?” he demanded. “Was it Vernon?”
“No, I kind of figured it out by myself.” He lightly touched the back of his hand again, making sure the feeling in it hadn’t been stopped entirely. “Between three new superheroes showing up with Spider-Man and three new kids dropping right into the middle of the session less than a day apart, it wasn’t hard to guess,” he said. “You were sent here by the biggest super spies in the world and the best disguise they could come up with was hair dye and a last name change?”
Felix didn’t snap at him again, but the look he was giving him was definitely hostile. “You have a better idea?” he countered. “In case you haven’t noticed, no one in the school has realized my identity yet.”
“Except me.”
“Except you,” he added, though a little sourly. “And that’s probably because you already know who Spider-Man is.”
Joshua considered this. “Well, that is true,” he admitted. “But it’s still kind of surprising that none of the kids that go here have figured it out yet.”
“They probably don’t want to believe there’s a mutant in their school,” Felix muttered. Joshua noticed how his face darkened as he continued staring at his food, stabbing the mashed potatoes with his plastic spoon. “People believe what they want to see.”
Joshua studied the boy, noticing the tension in his shoulders and the probably unconscious crease in the middle of his forehead. “Are you…” he started, then hesitated. What was he supposed to say?
Felix waved the half-question away, and spooned in a huge mouthful of his potatoes, indicating that the conversation was over. Joshua took another bite of his sandwich, wondering what was going through the blond’s head. Not having a secret identity, he didn’t know what it would feel like to have a common high school kid figure it out within days of meeting you. Something bad, probably.
There was a metallic clunk as someone placed their tray on the table. Luce swung her bag off her shoulders, dropping it to the floor, and took a seat next to Joshua. “Sorry I’m late, got caught up in a meeting,” she said, seemingly oblivious to the tension at the table. “What’d I miss?”
Joshua cast a furtive glance at Felix, only to find the boy’s eyes already trained on him. He hadn’t noticed before, but Felix’s eyes were brown. Joshua had never taken a close look at Iceman’s eyes, but somehow, he knew the brown eyes were a result of contact lenses.
“Nothing,” he said. “Nothing at all.”

Running in the hallways wasn’t allowed, but when you were going to the principal’s office, Vernon guessed it was an exception.
He sprinted all the way to the room, equal parts concerned and annoyed by the summons. If Coulson had called on him in school, then it was probably something important—but on the other hand, he hadn’t asked for Felix. Maybe it was a specifically Spider-Man related emergency.
When he burst through the door into the office, Coulson was leaning against the side of his desk, arms folded over his chest. The only other person in the room was Yangyang, who was seated on one of the chairs before the principal’s table, picking at the stuffing peeking out of the worn-out arm of the chair.
Vernon let the door shut behind him before stepping in, glancing between the two in confusion. The atmosphere definitely didn’t feel urgent. “Agent—I mean, Principal Coulson,” he said, wincing slightly at his slip-of-the-tongue. “You asked for me?”
“I did.” Coulson uncrossed his arms, placing the heels of his hands against the edge of the table. “Take a seat.”
Vernon crossed the room hesitantly, slowly sitting on the unoccupied chair. “Uh,” he said, glancing at Yangyang’s lounging figure with a frown. “Is this about something important?”
“It is indeed,” the agent confirmed, straightening. “If you consider the Shocker important.”
“Shocker?” Vernon repeated. “Isn’t he in S.H.I.E.L.D. jail or something?”
Yangyang snorted, and Vernon shot him a murderous look. “Unfortunately, no,” Coulson answered. “We’ve been trying to apprehend him, but he’s been laying low for a while.”
“Shocker, laying low?” Vernon raised an eyebrow. “Not something you see every day.”
“Yesterday, he robbed a bank on Madison Avenue,” Coulson continued, ignoring him. “I didn’t call you in then because you had a pop quiz in history going on, but—”
Yangyang groaned. “Seriously? Man, I could have used the distraction.”
The agent gave him a sharp look, before facing Vernon and speaking. “He’s out again today, terrorizing citizens in Central Park,” he said. “Usually, I’d prefer for other professionals to take on him, but orders are orders, and you, Vernon, have the most experience with him and will probably be able to take over him the most quickly.” He looked almost regretful, probably about them having to miss school hours. Damn, he was really getting into his role as the principal. “You are to leave immediately.”
“Wait, what’s he doing in Central Park?” Vernon frowned. “That’s not the most lucrative venture for a small-time villain.”
“Terrorizing citizens.” Coulson raised his eyebrows. “As I said.”
“Terrorizing citizens…?” Vernon muttered, sitting up a little. “That’s strange.”
“What’s up, Parker?” Yangyang asked with a mocking grin, uncrossing his legs and getting to his feet. He stretched, flexing his shoulders. “Disappointed in your little pet project?”
“Shut up, bucket head,” Vernon murmured. “It’s just not his usual style, but I guess he’s branching out.” He pursed his lips. “Still, I can’t imagine why.”
“And I can’t imagine why the two of you would stand around bickering and wasting your time when there’s a dangerous criminal on the loose,” Coulson said firmly, giving them a very teacher-like look. “Get going already.”
Vernon blinked. He glanced at Yangyang, who stood by the door looking at him expectantly, and then at Agent Coulson. “Wait,” he muttered, brow creasing as it slowly dawned on him where this was heading. “What about Tiger and Iceman?”
“They’re not needed for this simple mission,” Coulson said. “I’m sure the two of you can handle this problem by yourselves just fine.”
“Unless you’re scared of old Shocker, that is.” Yangyang gave him a lopsided smirk. “In which case, I’m sure Agent Coulson wouldn’t have a problem packing you an extra pair of underwear when you wet your pants.”
Vernon glared at him, his grip tightening on the armrests as he refused to get up. His gaze swiveled to the agent, eyes going round and pleading. “What about sending me with White Tiger instead?” he asked imploringly. “I’m sure we could take Shocker down more efficiently since we’ve had more time to practice our maneuvers together—”
“Go. Now.” Coulson was definitely not taking no for an answer as he gave him a stern look. Vernon stood up slowly, not taking his eyes off the man, just in case he got a last-minute break, but he was unrelenting. “Today would be good.”
“What are you going to tell your teachers?” Vernon asked desperately as he reluctantly made his way towards the door, where Yangyang was still waiting for him. He gave the boy a disbelieving look, surprised that he was willing to go along with all of this. Their animosity was, on most days, mutual. “We have bio lab later, and we’re both partners, and if I miss this class I might—”
“Don’t worry about that, leave it to me,” Coulson said, now simply looking impatient. “And stop making excuses to get out of the situation. Every little second you waste here doing that means another second of those innocent civilians being in danger. What happened to all your preaching about responsibility?”
Saying this, he pushed the two boys out of his office and shut the door in their face. Vernon stared at it glumly, finally accepting his fate.
“Come on, then, partner,” Yangyang said. He stood next to him with his arms crossed over his chest, grinning like a cat after a catch. “Looks like you’re stuck with me.”

Trust Fund, Gold Tongue (Crygi) 1/7 - Peridot
A/N: I am so excited to be taking part in the Summer Lovin’ fic challenge! This is going to be my first multichap ever, so bare with me!! I’ve enjoyed working on this for ages now, and I’m so excited to share it with you all. You can find me at my sideblog @artificialperidot, come say hi!!
Summary: Crystal hates her summer job in a country club, until she falls oh so hard for the sweet-talking millionaire daughter of the owner. Gigi would rather not spend her summer with her dysfunctional family, but a certain red headed waitress proves to be a welcome distraction.
They would both rather be anywhere else, but perhaps their summer won’t be as bad as it seems.
Hope you enjoy!!
Crystal could think of a hundred things she’d rather be doing this summer than working in a country club full of wealthy pricks. But the wage was decent, and God knows her rent wasn’t going to pay itself.
Walking into the resort for the first time had been like walking into another dimension, a complete other world from the life she knew, where there was no such thing as “too expensive”. It was like getting a glimpse into the other side of the world, of affluence that she could have never comprehended unless she had seen it with her own eyes. The complex was huge, spanning acres upon acres of land, and lavishly decorated - the front lobby had a fountain, for Christ’s sake.
Crystal thought it looked like something from MTV Cribs. On crack.
Not only was the place huge, but it had more facilities than Crystal could’ve even imagined - a golf course, a bowling alley, tennis courts, a spa, and countless swimming pools and hot tubs, some of which Crystal had yet to find on her first week on the job. Not to mention the private restaurants and numerous bars, which, as a waitress, she most often found herself working in.
So far, Crystal had learned two things in her first week working at the country club. Number one, for having such expensive taste, rich old white men liked drinking really cheap beer. And number two, despite the beer being cheap, they would do anything they could to avoid paying for it.
Crystal leaned against her beer cart and did her very best to ignore the sound of a 50-something year old country club member (who was much too loud and much too drunk for 11am on a Tuesday) babbling something about Crystal bringing him the wrong drink - that he ordered a Budweiser and not a Heineken - in an attempt to get another free pint. Crystal didn’t say a word, only nodding now and again to seem like she was listening. She was absolutely certain the guy was lying through his teeth. She specifically remembered writing down the man’s order, and double checking to make sure she had got it right. But she’d quickly learned to keep her mouth shut, because the people she was dealing with had enough money and enough influence to get her fired in an instant, and that simply was not an option for her.
She learnt that the customer is always right, even if the customer’s nose has grown five inches and their pants have set on fire.
Heaving a sigh, she mumbled out a “sorry about that, sir, I’ll get you another one on the house” through gritted teeth, before lifting all the empty glasses from the poolside table and balancing the man’s pint (which was about two thirds empty, despite it supposedly being ‘the wrong drink’) , precariously on her cart. If she had an ounce more courage, she would’ve challenged him, told him that he and his mates that had tried the same trick on her before weren’t fooling anyone, but she decided she’d leave her complaining for Jan’s ears when they were on lunch break.
She found their reluctance to pay surprising, really, since they had more money than she could even imagine. They had more money than she’d probably earn in her whole life. But, she supposed that’s how they all stayed so rich - by being cheap bastards.
She started wheeling the trolley back towards the bar indoors, hoping the guy didn’t pay much attention to the scowl that had crept its way onto her face. She decided to take the long way back, going around the pool rather than passing by his table again, which gave her a little time to cool off before she had to go inside and tell Jan or whoever was bartending to pour his beer down the sink.
She was tempted to hide round a corner and down the beer when no one was looking, because fuck, she needed a drink right about now.
Crystal found it funny that little things like that bothered her so much. She was fully aware that there were far worse things a person could do - she herself had done things that were way worse than telling a little white lie to get a free drink. But seeing it happen every day for the past week had really rubbed her the wrong way. Sure, in her last job as a waitress in a café she had encountered similar situations, but this felt different. It was different because she knew these people had the money, that they would have no trouble paying a few dollars out of their millions, and that they were stealing for the hell of it. Thinking about it made her want to scream.
Crystal wasn’t poor, per say. She wasn’t rich by any means, but her family had enough money to get by most of the time. It was only now that she was moving out for college at the end of the summer that she was in real need of some cash for her rent and her student loans. But knowing that people slave away for hours in dead end jobs just to make ends meet, and these millionaires wouldn’t pay for a fucking beer? It made her blood boil.
Although she felt like steam was coming out of her ears, she took a few deep breaths to calm herself and keep her cool. She was still working, after all. She found herself staring into the pool water as she rolled the cart along, watching as the sun’s reflection danced on its surface, glimmering. She was thankful for the hot weather, at least. The sunshine lightened everyone’s mood a little, and usually made her job a bit easier.
She considered it a small victory.
“Excuse me, miss?” a woman’s voice called out.
Snapping out of her daydream, Crystal swivelled round in search of the source of the voice. The poolside was fairly empty given the time of day (because let’s face it, if Crystal wasn’t working, she wouldn’t have been awake at 11am, either), so it didn’t take her long to see a girl, lying on one of the sun loungers, seemingly on her own and sticking out like a sore thumb from the older men in golfing gear.
She was young, Crystal thought, probably about the same age as herself or a little younger, and she donned a floppy sun hat and a pair of oversized cat-eye sunglasses, which left Crystal slightly unsure in what direction she was looking, or if she even had her eyes open at all. Her long, dark hair sat in waves down to her chest, and she just so happened to be wearing a very flattering and clearly very expensive bathing suit - a black halter neck bikini, with gold buckles - which left little to the imagination.
She looked like the dictionary definition of a rich girl, and Crystal would’ve rolled her eyes at how cliché she looked if she wasn’t so god damn hot.
“Um, hello?” the girl asked.
Crystal’s heart jolted. “Huh? Oh! Uh, how can I help you?” She jumped to attention, and was now suddenly very aware of her cheeks flushing red. How long had she been staring?
“Could I get another pink lemonade, please?” the girl said as if it was obvious, holding out her empty glass for Crystal to take.
“Oh, sure,” Crystal replied, making her way over to her sunlounger and feeling the heat rush to her face. When she grabbed the glass, Crystal could’ve swore she felt their hands touch for just a millisecond, and she would be lying if she said she didn’t feel a little flustered.
“Thanks,” the girl said, offering Crystal a small smile from behind her huge sunglasses.
A smile of pity, probably, Crystal thought.
She quickly placed the glass onto her cart and began rolling it away as fast as she deemed socially acceptable, speed-walking her way towards the bar. She bit the inside of her cheek and inwardly cursed herself for being so awkward. What was that? Who was that? And why the hell was she having heart palpitations?
She was practically out of breath by the time she reached the bar, which was located just inside a set of double doors, right by the pool. She set the glasses on the bar top, leaning on it in an attempt to steady herself and taking a few seconds to catch her breath. When she looked up, she was met by a smirking Jan, who had a single eyebrow raised.
“Care to tell me why you’re as red as a tomato?”
“Fuck you,” Crystal sighed, a smile breaking onto her face. “It’s warm outside, that’s all.”
Jan raised a single eyebrow. “Whatever you say,” she chirped, clearly not believing her. As much as Crystal wanted to elbow her in the ribs at that, she couldn’t help but smile. One of the few good things to come out of this job was her friendship with Jan and the other staff, which was new, but already felt strong. Jan was the human equivalent of a golden retriever- it was hard not to love her.
“Hey, I need a pink lemonade and a Budweiser beer for customers outside.”
“Another beer? This one’s not finished,” Jan said, gesturing to the pint glass Crystal had placed on the bar top before her.
Crystal rolled her eyes. “Apparently it’s the wrong brand.”
“Ugh. Another one of those guys. I hope he didn’t give you a hard time, sweetie,” she said, shaking her head with a sympathetic smile. “I’ll get the drinks for you now.”
“Thanks, Jan.”
As Jan busied herself with pulling another pint, Crystal could help but peer out through the door at the girl, still laid out on her sun lounger by the pool. She couldn’t deny she was gorgeous, but she wasn’t sure why her heart decided to try to escape her chest at the sight of her, especially seeing half of her face was hidden by those huge sunglasses and that floppy hat. It was probably that damn swimsuit, she thought.
Jan’s voice interrupted her train of thought. “I presume the pink lemonade’s for miss Goode? It’s her usual. I’ll put it on her tab.”
Crystal was quickly brought back to attention. “Who’s miss Goode?” she asked, trying not to seem too curious.
“Probably one of the richest teenagers in this hemisphere,” Jan scoffed.
Crystal gulped. “Oh, really?”
“Mmhm. Her dad’s a multimillionaire, he’s the CEO of some software company,” she said, not looking up from her task of refilling drinks. “He owns this whole country club. The Goode’s always spend their summer here.”
Crystal’s eyes widened. She knew that the girl would be rich, but she didn’t think she would be that rich. She was suddenly very intimidated, but she somehow wasn’t surprised. This ‘miss Goode’ looked like a million dollars, and apparently she was worth even more. One thing was for certain, though - any feelings she possibly could’ve had towards her had to be squashed, immediately.
“She’s not a bad kid, though,” Jan continued. “I kinda feel bad for her sometimes.”
“Why’s that?”
Before Jan could answer, their workmate Heidi swept through from the kitchen, carrying a stack of trays in one hand and a towel in the other, and took her place behind the bar with Jan. “Oh please, there’s nothing to feel bad for. She’s a bazillionaire, she’ll probably never work a day in her life!” she exclaimed, clearly having overheard their conversation. “If I was that rich, I’d be living it up in a mansion with all my rich friends and buying loads of cars and having parties every night. But, ya know. Poverty,” she said, laughing at her own joke immediately after.
Crystal found herself chuckling along and automatically agreeing with Heidi - she was sure that money like that would solve all of her problems. But she was reluctant to say so, and she wasn’t quite sure why.
“You’d better not keep her waiting, Crystal,” Jan prompted, handing over the fresh pint of beer and a tall glass of pink lemonade, which had a pink straw and crushed ice and a strawberry and slice of lemon on the rim. Crystal thought that it should have one of those mini cocktail umbrellas too, but she supposed that would’ve been a little overkill.
Gently balancing the drinks on her cart, she nodded in thanks to the girls, promising to meet them on their lunch break, and started wheeling it out the double doors, back towards the pool and the sun loungers.
Back towards miss Goode.
She wasn’t entirely sure that the colour of her face had settled by now, but she hoped that she wouldn’t be able to tell from behind her sunglasses. She told herself the nerves that were building in her chest were because of this girl’s social status, and definitely not because she was pretty. Definitely not. That didn’t even cross Crystal’s mind. She didn’t even need to tell herself that looking at a customer like that was a bad idea, and that miss Goode was probably straight, and that she’d never think twice about dating an employee. No, of course not. That would be stupid.
As she walked ever closer, Crystal was psyching herself up, telling herself to stop being an awkward mess and just be cool. Act natural. All she had to do was hand her the glass without making it too obvious that she was nervous. Easy. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. (And, avoid staring at her in that bathing suit, which was significantly less easy peasy lemon squeezy).
Before she knew it, she was a couple steps away from her. This was it. Just hand her the drink and get out of there. She could do this.
The girl turned to face Crystal when she saw her coming, offering her a smile. And then, she reached up and took off her sunglasses. And Crystal got a glimpse of her eyes for the first time. They were a piercing icy blue, and they twinkled in the sunshine, and Crystal didn’t want to take her eyes off of them.
Crystal fumbled on her cart and grabbed a glass, handing it to Gigi, not wanting to break eye contact for a second. She may have only been holding eye contact for a few seconds, but Crystal was captivated, swimming in her gaze.
And then, the girl looked downwards, and her face fell, and for just a second, Crystal’s heart dropped. Her brows furrowed. She looked confused.
And then Crystal realised she hadn’t handed the girl her pink lemonade, but the pint of beer.
Crap.
“Usually I get ID’d before someone serves me alcohol,” the girl said with a cocky smirk.
“Oh, uh, sorry!”
Crystal felt the heat rushing to her cheeks as she fumbled to fix her mistake, practically shoving the pink drink in her free hand as panic caught in her throat. She had one job. One simple job. She snatched the pint glass away from her with shaky hands.
And then, she dropped it.
“Shit!”
The glass miraculously didn’t smash, but its contents were spilt all over the poolside tiles.
This was all she needed.
Crystal sighed, just desolately staring at her reflection at the puddle of beer for a few seconds as an overwhelming feeling of for fuck’s sake overtook her. She groaned, flailing her arms like a toddler throwing a tantrum. She heard the girl beside her start to chuckle with that stupid cocky smirk still plastered on her face, perching on the edge of the sun lounger and looking up at Crystal.
“You know, someone should really clean that up,” she said, flashing Crystal a grin. “It’s a slipping hazard.”
Crystal rolled her eyes. “We’re by a pool, everywhere’s a slipping hazard,” she said, but she fumbled for the towel that she had tucked into her apron pocket anyways, kneeling down to wipe it up.
The girl giggled at that, leaning back against her chair with her crossed legs outstretched before her (which Crystal definitely didn’t find herself staring at). “You didn’t strike me as the type to talk back, but I’m pleasantly surprised,” she said, taking an obnoxiously loud slurp through her pink bendy straw.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Most of the staff here are no fun. I think they’re all afraid I’m gonna get them fired or something,” she said with a shrug. “You seem fun though.”
Crystal felt herself blush, but this time she wasn’t embarrassed. She was smiling. “Well, God didn’t give me this incredible personality to be quiet.”
The girl laughed, tucking a lock of her dark chocolate brown hair behind her ear. Crystal couldn’t help but take notice of the way she stuck her tongue out just a little as she giggled, and it made her smile, too. She giggled like a little girl, and it seemed like such a contrast to her effortless chic-ness. Crystal found it endearing. And very cute.
“I haven’t seen you around here before, have I?” the girl said. Her eyes scanned Crystal’s face, and Crystal tried to focus on wiping up the spilt drink because she was sure that if she caught another glance at the girl’s doll eyes looking directly at her, her brain would start shutting down.
“I don’t think so,” Crystal replied. “I only started here about a week ago.”
“I thought so,” the girl hummed, before taking another sip from her glass. “I think I would’ve remembered you.”
Crystal could’ve swallowed her own tongue at that. Instead she clenched her jaw and continued cleaning, keeping her lips firmly shut to make sure she didn’t say something stupid.
“So what’s your name then?”
“Crystal,”
“Nice to meet you, Crystal,” the girl said with a quick raise of her eyebrows.
“Nice to meet you too, uh-.”
“Gigi,” the girl said with a smile.
“Gigi,” Crystal replied, seeing how her name felt on her tongue, and recalling the name Jan had mentioned earlier. Gigi Goode. It felt right, she thought. It suited her. It definitely seemed like a rich girl name, and as far as rich girls came, this girl was supposedly in a league of her own. Though Crystal tried not to think about that - her massive sunglasses and her perfect model body were already intimidating enough.
Not that Crystal was thinking about her body or anything. Especially not about how good it looked in that pretty swimsuit.
Of course not.
Once she had the beer all mopped up, Crystal tossed the soaked towel over her shoulder, picking up the desolate pint glass from the ground and placing it on her beer cart, still in awe of how it didn’t smash on the outdoor tiles. She supposed the universe had felt bad for her - she’d had quite enough beer issues for today, and the last thing she needed was broken glass to deal with, too.
The knowledge that she’d have to go back for yet another beer for that lying bastard, though, made her want to throw the glass at a brick wall.
She felt frustration build up in her chest at the thought, and sighed. Perhaps a little too loudly, though, as Gigi seemed to pick up in it.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.
“Ugh, I just have to go get this annoying guy another beer now,” Crystal replied with a roll of her eyes.
“How is he annoying?”
Crystal probably shouldn’t be saying this to the daughter of the country club owner, but fuck it, she needed to vent. “There’s a group of them, actually. They always yell at me and pretend I got their order wrong so they can get another free beer. I know it’s not that bad, but it just rubs me the wrong way.”
Crystal looked at Gigi, whose face had changed to one of shock and anger, her mouth hanging open slightly and her eyebrows furrowed. She stayed silent for a second, before standing up from her sun lounger, scanning the pool area. “Who was it?”
“That guy over there, in the blue polo shirt,” Crystal said, gesturing towards him.
Gigi nodded, her eyes narrowing. Crystal saw her clutch her glass tightly, her knuckles turning white. “Oh. Him,” she said, her voice stoic. “I know him. Well, I guess I won’t be needing the rest of my drink!” she said, and with that, she was off, quickly marching to the spot where the man stood.
Before Crystal had time to comprehend what was happening, Gigi was face to face with the man, and Crystal was frozen in her spot, her feet stuck to the ground a few meters away from them.
She heard Gigi’s voice yell something, and then she was throwing her pink lemonade in the man’s face.
He was drenched, and Crystal had to cover her mouth to suppress her laughter.
Crystal half expected the now dripping man to start yelling, screaming at Gigi like he had screamed at her. But instead he remained silent, not looking angry, but more at a loss for words, before he trudged off grumpily, presumably to get changed.
When her eyes darted away from the man, Gigi was nowhere to be seen. But even so, she still found herself grinning like a fool.
And, when her manager called her to clean up the spilt pink lemonade by the pool, she was more than happy to oblige.

Year 3 Part 6- Tulip Karasu
Hey, guys.
New chapter is up. Sorry it took so long, I've been dealing with some highly personal stuff. It's not going to get any easier so things are going to be a bit unpredictable for awhile.
But that being said, I hope you all like the content as usual and please let me know what you think of my interpretation of Tulip!
Tonks did indeed have a plan, but it was risky, even by their group’s standards. Rowan and Ben were not at all convinced of its merit.
“Let me get this correctly. Tonks is going to pretend to be Snape and report that Peeves is messing up the Transfiguration classroom while you sneak into his office and take back your brother’s quill?” his best friend asked while they ate dinner in the Great Hall.
“Yup,” David replied, taking a bite of his steak. “Pretty much.”
“You seem entirely too unconcerned.”
He gave a nonchalant shrug.
“What choice do I have? I’d have to break into his office somehow and get it back.”
“There are many ways to get Filch to leave his office,” Rowan told him. “But impersonating a teacher is probably the most dangerous. Especially Snape. What if the real one catches you?”
“We’re doing it Friday evening,” David explained. “By that time, Snape will be brooding in his bedroom and won’t even be aware of what’s going on.”
“He could always find out later,” Ben pointed out.
“And how could they prove it was me? Mates, we got every angle of this plan covered. I promise.”
Rowan adjusted his glasses skeptically.
“I just hope Tonks knows what she’s doing. I hope you both know what you’re doing. This could go spectacularly wrong.”
“It’s the only way to find out more about my brother. I’m taking that chance, plus I owe that mean old geezer what for.”
“And what about the cursed vaults? More boggarts keep popping up everywhere. Are you still content to heed Dumbledore and your parents?”
It was the million galleon question. More than ever, David felt the pull to continue to investigate the vaults. But despite what people thought of him, he was not going to purposefully seek trouble. Family mattered more. Not the vaults. But was it time to concede the two were irrevocably linked?
“I’ll have to do a rain check on that,” he told Rowan who looked at Ben.
Neither one of them seemed reassured.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It was quite impressive...and bit odd that Tonks knew Filch’s habits so thoroughly. David didn’t mind pointing it out to the metamorphmagus either.
“If you spent half the effort in Herbology as you do tricking Filch, you wouldn’t be spending every other Tuesday with Sprout shoveling dung.”
Tonks clutched her heart in mock offense.
“Merlin’s beard, Dave. You wound me to the quick. The art of hoodwinking this mangy caretaker is an art just as important as any academic mark.”
David snorted.
“Right, whatever you say.”
“Do you want your quill back or not?”
They were in the same corridor as Filch’s office, about thirty feet away, peeking around one of the corners. Tonks wore her usual ensemble of a ripped t-shirt, boots, gray woolen tights, and denim shorts, but she summoned a huge mess of robes from her bag and put them on. The effect was to make her look like a pint sized dementor without the hood.
“Of course.”
“Then follow my lead.”
“Where did you get the robes?”
Tonks couldn’t help but grin.
“Penny has a contact with one of the house elves. Also helps that our common room is right by the kitchen and laundry room.”
“One of these days one of you has to sneak me in there, I swear,” David said eagerly.
“All in good time,” the pink haired witch said with a wink. “For now, it’s showtime. Follow my lead, and stay hidden until Filch is out of sight.”
Without another word, she transformed into an exact replica of Professor Snape, walked promptly down the hall and knocked on the third door to the left.
The jangly, old caretaker opened it immediately, Mrs. Norris purring by his shoes.
“Professor Snape, sir! What can I do for you?”
It was evident that Filch had a great deal of respect as the man bowed as low as his aching joints would let him. David supposed it had something to do with Snape’s reputation as a harsh, no nonsense disciplinarian.
“Yes. It is I: Severus Snape. Potions Master and head of Slytherin. I have a job for you.”
Much as he hated to admit it, Tonk’s acting was atrocious compared to his own stint as the Potions Master. He slapped a hand to his forehead.
“We’re bloody doomed.”
But thankfully, Filch was no Dumbledore when it came to discerning through disguises.
“What seems to be the trouble?”
“Peeves is currently wrecking the Transfiguration classroom and I thought you were just the man to fend him off. I would have done it myself, but I have too many papers to grade.”
“Yes, sir, Professor Snape. I’ll go head him off right now. Come, Mrs. Norrus.”
The caretaker hobbled off, his beloved cat in tow. David was sure to remain plastered to the wall as he went by. When out of sight, he went back towards Tonks, who by now had returned to her normal self.
“That was quite a performance.”
“Thank you, kindly. The Transfiguration classroom is pretty far away but I reckon you still only have fifteen minutes before he realizes he’s been tricked and comes back. Search that office as quickly as you can.”
“Right. You’re amazing, Tonks,” he said sincerely to her.
“Praise me later. Go!” she urged him. “I’ll stand guard and give a signal when you have five minutes.”
Wasting no more time, David used a simple unlocking spell on the door, which opened with a small click, granting him access to its contents.
Inside was a jumbled mess of filing cabinets, papers, and notes that surrounded a heavy wooden desk. Boxes of contraband lined the walls. There was a bowl and sleeping area for the mangy cat as well as a cot for a human being. Hanging from the walls were shackles, which were the best maintained objects in the entire room. They were shiny, well oiled and ominous, as if they were being prepared for use in a seconds notice. On top of that, there was a light draft from an unknown source.
David couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pity for the man but there was little time to dwell on that. He needed to find this quill and fast.
“Filch’s office is just as cold and depressing as I imagined,” he surmised to himself.
Peering around the mass of boxes, cabinets, and contraband he gave a frustrated sigh.
“It’s going to take me forever to go through all this rubbish.”
He began looking through the drawers and various boxes, ignoring the damp smell of moth balls and cat hair. There was nothing much to report, files on various students who had attended the school many years ago, confiscated items such as fanged frisbees and nose biting tea cups. No doubt he’d been on the receiving end of many prank items.
“This is taking too much time,” he muttered.
Then David realized he’d been looking in the wrong place. Quills were small items most likely to be kept inside a desk…
Quickly, he turned around and began scrummaging through Filch’s hardwood desk and soon enough in the second drawer from the right, there it was.”
“Gotcha!” he cried out triumphantly.
Just then, there was a knock on the door indicating five minutes left. He’d made it with time to spare.
Time to get the hell out of here
He and Tonks laughed all the way back to the Gryffindor Tower where she saw him off, both surprised the plan went off without any hitches.
“He’s going to be furious tomorrow,” the pink haired witch chuckled. “Peeves was actually in the Astronomy Tower. Oops.”
“I guess it pays being a metamorphagus,” David said with a grin.
“The teachers all know, of course. I’d never try to fool one of them, but Filch is an exception. Plus, this was important to you.”
David felt his heart warm with gratitude. For as clumsy and goofy as she could be, Tonks really was a true and loyal friend. She had proved that yet again.
“Thank you.”
“Any time, mate. So what do you think this quill contains anyway?”
Rubbing his fingers on the soft, smooth edge of the feather, David only had one thought in mind.
“Something that belonged to my brother. And another key to finding him.”
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Back in the common room It didn’t take long for David and Rowan to get started in analyzing the quill. Though it was late, they were careful to stay quiet so as not to be overheard.
“This quill looks remarkably similar to the one we found on Ben during second year. Do you think it’s ‘R’ again?” Rowan asked.
R was still a mystery to them all. There had been no sign or message from the group since last year and without more evidence to go off, finding out who they were would remain unknown for the time being.
“I don’t think so. Madam Rosmerta said this quill belonged to my brother. It was on his person when the Ministry hauled him away for questioning before leaving it behind.”
“Only one way to find out,” his best friend shrugged.
Laying the quill out on one the tables, David cast the untransfiguring spell.
“Repifarage!”
Almost immediately the quill turned into a brown, leatherback notebook. On the bottom right corner was the name ‘Jacob H. Grant’.
“Whoa…”
Wasting no time, the two young Gryffindors opened it up to the first page. It contained a bevy of symbols and a language that looked suspiciously familiar.
“Ancient Aramaic,” Rowan breathed out. “The same inscription we saw in our first year and on the walls of the ice vault.”
“It’s becoming a common theme,” David said. “Can you decipher it?”
Rowan nodded as he picked up the book and studied its contents.
“I can but it’ll take me a few minutes. Not exactly easy to decipher messages in a dead language.”
“Only a few minutes?” David teased him.
Rowan blushed. “Shut up.”
Indeed, the prowess of his highly intelligent and book smart friend proved quite useful as it only took him a short amount of time to work out the message, constantly tapping the pages with his wand while muttering underneath his breath.
“Alright, I think I have the basic gist of it.”
“What does it say?”
Rowan cleared his throat but spoke in a low whisper as a few sixth year stragglers passed them by. No doubt they were returning from a party of some sort.
“‘These boggarts must have something to do with the curse protecting the next vault, which means someone found it first. If I don’t hurry, Hogwarts is doomed.’”
“History seems to be repeating itself, then,” David mused to himself.
“And look at this!” Rowan said in a hushed, excited tone. “A location of where he conducted most of his research. It’s near the greenhouses on one of the lower corridors.”
David’s heart began to race with anticipation. He hadn’t felt a sense of urgency quite like this since the previous year.
“Just like he told me last year in the ice vault. ‘Find my room, David’. We need to get into it, pronto.”
“You go find it while I take Sunday to decipher the rest of this notebook,” his best friend told him. “We can cover more ground that way.”
“Sounds good. I’ll take Bill with me. He’ll be more than happy to do more investigating into this vault. Plus, he can use his prefect status as a cover just in case a teacher comes along.”
“Tell him I said hello!”
“Rowan, we see him almost every day.”
“I know...I just...never mind.”
David smiled and shook his head. He often wondered just how far Rowan’s admiration of Bill Weasley went. But he shrugged off that thought.
It was time to find his brother’s room.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Sunday was always a lazy day, even by Hogwarts’ usual busybody standards. Most students were content to lay around, sleep in, catch up on homework, or hang out with their friends. For David Grant and Bill Weasley, however, that time was spent searching for a random room that contained possible information about a cursed vault.
“This is definitely an unexpected development, but not an unwelcome one,” Bill told him as they walked along the lower corridor. “How did you find out about your brother’s secret room, Dave? You never explained that when you asked me to come along.”
“He kept records of his search for the Cursed Vaults. Madam Rosmerta gave me a black quill at the Three Broomsticks that once belonged to him. Turns out it was a hidden notebook. Rowan deciphered one of the pages and we found the location of the room he used for his research.”
“That’s huge,” the eldest Weasley commented, clearly impressed. “I’m amazed you deciphered it so fast.”
“Thank Rowan. He’s a genius when it comes to that sort of stuff.”
“Of course. So this place is somewhere at the end of this hallway?”
“Past the greenhouses. There’s supposed to be an anonymous room with a dark wooden door.”
Bill swelled up with pride.
“Well then let’s go find it. Now that I’m a prefect, I can make sure that students are out of the corridors if we need some privacy. Plus the teachers won’t think to question us.”
“Didn’t think you’d get those kinds of perks, did ya?” David elbowed him with a grin.
“Being a prefect is something I’m truly thankful for. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy being able to move more freely throughout the castle because of it,” Bill laughed.
Moving forward, they scoured the corridor, glancing around for any sign of their quarry. When there was no door to speak of, David had an idea.
“Let me try something.”
Visualizing an old, dark brown, wooden door, the third year Gryffindor cast a revealing charm. And sure enough, in a tiny corner packed away to the left underneath an archway of stone, one materialized.
“Blimey, David. I still can’t believe you know that spell. McGonagall says most students don’t even attempt vanishing and revealing until sixth year.”
“She says I have the chance to be a certified master in the subject before I turn 17,” he replied, trying not to brag. “I dunno, I guess I’m just naturally good at it.”
“Ever think of becoming an animagus?”
The third year Gryffindor shrugged.
“Not really. The idea of changing into a smelly animal isn’t all that appealing.”
“Fair enough,” Bill chuckled. “Now let’s check out this room.”
But they were in for a frustrating surprise. Upon closer inspection, there was a yellow padlock with two keyholes around the handle.
“Well this sucks,” David muttered.
“I’m sure we can get around it with an unlocking spell,” Bill encouraged.
David withdrew his wand and gave an ‘Alohomora’ but nothing happened, much to his chagrin.
“No good.”
“I’ll try busting it down,” the eldest Weasley said, taking out his own wand. “Flipendo!”
It did not have the intended effect. The spell ricocheted off the door narrowly missing his head and creating a scorch mark on the opposite wall.
“Guess we can cross that method off the list.”
“Must be sealed with some kind of spell beyond our means to break,” Bill surmised. “We’re going to have to find another way.”
It was then that David finally noticed something he hadn’t before: scrawled, tiny writing at the bottom of the lock.
“Look at this,” he pointed. “Property of Tulip Karasu. He looked towards Bill for clarification. “Who the hell is that?”
“I actually know of her,” the Prefect explained. “She’s a Ravenclaw in your year. Apparently, she’s always in detention. Bit of an eccentric from what I’ve heard.”
“Oh, joy,” the third year Gryffindor snarked. “Guess we have no choice but to confront the nutter, eh?”
“Either that or we’re not getting through this door.”
There was no question on what to do next. Whoever this Tulip Karasu was, they would have to somehow convince her to give them the key or enchantment to unlock the secrets inside. Another roadblock in the enigma that was fast becoming the next cursed vault.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It didn’t take long for David and Bill to track down their desired person. Tulip was known to hang out in the Transfiguration room after school hours and it was actually Andre Egwu who pointed them in the right direction.
“Just be careful,” he told them at breakfast. “None of us really interact with her that much, but she’s weird even by Ravenclaw standards.”
“We’ll be alright, Andre,” David thanked him. “I’ve taken down an Ice Knight before. I think this shouldn’t be too hard.”
The black teen gave a knowing shrug.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
And so the two boys agreed to meet outside the Transfiguration classroom once lessons were done for the day. Ben had unfortunately landed in detention after Ismelda blew up his cauldron and laid the blame at his feet. Rowan was assisting Madam Pince in the library. Upon meeting in the corridor once more, Bill gave him an inquisitive glance.
“I forgot to ask, David. Given everything that’s going on, does this mean we’re all in on the vaults again?”
The third year couldn’t deny that finding his brother and the vaults were undeniably linked by this time. And what’s more, that inescapable, consuming drive was back. He could feel it in the very essence of his soul. He wanted to find Jacob and this vault by extension. If that meant saving the school from a few boggarts, so be it.
“Yeah,” he replied back with a reassuring look. “We’re back.”
Bill grinned.
“I was hoping you’d say that. Come on, let’s see what we can find out from this girl.”
Sure enough inside, there was a third year girl dressed in Ravenclaw colors. She was writing something on a sheet of parchment, giving no indication she was aware of any other presence in the room.
“That reminds me, how do you want to approach this?” Bill asked him.
“Ask nicely and hope she cooperates?” David whispered to the side. “She can’t be that unreasonable.”
Upon approaching the desk Tulip was sitting in, he was able to garner more of her physical features. She was fair skinned, thin, with dark brown eyes that took on a slight Asiatic quality. Long, red hair draped down past her shoulders and like Merula, took certain liberties with the uniform; her sleeves were rolled up and she wore brown oxfords, light blue socks with black tights underneath. To top it off, she also donned a necklace that looked suspiciously like a dungbomb. On the left side of the desk was a green toad which David thought was peculiar but thought nothing more of.
“Uh...excuse me? Tulip? Hi, I’m David Grant. I know your time is valuable and you’re probably very busy, but I really need your help.”
The response they received was bizarre to say the least. The Ravenclaw girl didn’t even bother to look up from her writing.
“Little flower...smells so sweet, so soft and delicate.”
David and Bill gave each other sideways glances, eyebrows raised.
“Uh...did you hear what I asked, Tulip?”
“I’m very busy. Talk to Dennis until I’m finished.”
“Who’s Dennis?” Bill asked, highly confused. He looked down at the toad in front of them, which gave a loud croak. “And what is that?”
Tulip again didn’t bother to look up from whatever she was writing.
“That’s a toad. His name is Dennis.”
Bill resisted rolling his eyes, while David had to suppress a laugh. This girl was barmy.
“We know what a toad is,” the third year Gryffindor said. “What’s that thing strapped to its back?”
It was only now that both boys noticed there was an object tied around the toad’s midsection, which looked suspiciously like…
“A dungbomb,” came the girl’s reply.
“As a prefect and a Weasley I can safely say that is the case,” Bill affirmed.
“I don’t smell anything.”
“It will when it explodes.”
Sure enough, the detonation timer was already set, a quiet ticking permeating through the odd conversation. It was only then David realized the gravity of the situation.
“Son of a...Tulip! How do I disarm this thing?”
“I can’t just give you the answers to my test. I need to know if you’re worthy of my help.”
He looked back towards Bill, panic growing on both of their faces.
“Wait a minute can you actually disarm a dungbomb?”
“If there's a method, I’m not aware of one. Fred and George set them off all the time. I’d say we only have about 10 seconds before it goes off.”
David was in no mood to be smelling the end of yesterday’s lunch and they had mere moments until the fateful explosion. Mind racing, he struggled to think of a solution.
“Wait, Bill. Use that new charm you were showing me the other day.”
“Which one?”
“The bubble head thingy.”
“You mean the bubble head charm?”
“Yes!”
Bill looked very perplexed now.
“How is that supposed to-”
By now David had cut the smelly projectile from the toad’s back and tossed it into the air.
“Cast it now!”
With precise aim, Bill understood his meaning and hit the dungbomb with a liquid blue bubble, enveloping it at the moment of detonation. Inside a greenish gas swirled about before the charm was lifted allowing the noxious air to pass harmlessly into the air.
“That was way too close,” the elder Weasley muttered.
“We didn’t disarm it but we got rid of it at least,” David offered.
“I assumed you would,” Tulip cut across them. By now she had ceased writing and looked upon both boys with great interest. “Getting rid of a dungbomb is nothing compared to breaking the curse on a Cursed Vault. I was quite jealous to be honest. I’ve always wanted to be told off in front of the entire school at the Welcoming Feast.”
“Er...right. May I ask why?” David asked, still unsure of what to make of this person.
“Because rules are made to be broken and Hogwarts has far too many rules,” came the mischievous reply with an equally mischievous smirk he felt oddly drawn to. “You inspired me David Grant. I knew I had to be the next one to open a Cursed Vault. I immediately scoured this castle for clues until I found an abandoned room that your brother used to research the vaults. To prevent anyone else from going in, I fashioned a key with two locks.”
“Well I’m flattered. But I can only assume you have the means to get inside?”
“I do but only partially. One key is in my possession. The other I agreed to give to my accomplice.”
David didn’t like where this conversation was heading. Every time he thought he had the answer to getting into his brother’s room, something else thwarted him.
“And who would this accomplice be?”
Tulip again gave him a curious, eccentric stare.
“I need to know I can trust you before I tell you that, David Grant. Meet me in the Great Hall tonight for dinner. We can chat one on one.”
David was tempted to put his foot down and just demand for the information and they key right then and there but he withheld his frustration. That kind of tactic wouldn’t work with someone like Tulip, especially since she held the key to his brother and the latest vault...quite literally. Of all the houses, he had the least amount of experience with the Ravenclaws.
It seemed as though he was about to get an education. Bill gave him a shrug as if to say ‘couldn’t hurt’.
“Alright, then. I’ll see you there.”
Tulip gave another mischievous smile in return.
“Excellent.”

TGIWednesday News
Here's my question... is it you and only you? Lately I have come across a lot of folks who are not fully present in their bodies for obvious reasons with all the Covid-19 issues and social distancing/home alone etc. Worse than that, some folks with multiple other entities in their bodies.  At face value it sounds kookee when I say it and read it, but it is real as real can get.  I had a client just the other day with crying/raging panic and after we cleared her of the other critters, she was laughing.  All this took place in a minute.  I know of no other FASTER modality.  So as they say, “check yourself before you wreck yourself” and use your fingers/pendulum or standing sway testing and make sure there is only you in your body.  Make the statement, "I (insert your birth name here) am the only being in this body."  Clear/fish as needed and believe me it can make a huge difference.  I even did it for my cat who was hiding and acting aloof and an hour later he got on the bed and licked my hand!  He is such a dude.  I love it and I love what we do and what we’re a part of... TGIWednesday and is it just you?
Tumblr media
"regular folks" must be bored with out knowing all the fun stuff happening underneath it all...  and fyi, if you’re reading this, you’re not regular by any means :) Don’t forget to join us for our upcoming LIVE Zoom event scheduled for NEXT WEDNESDAY APRIL 29th.  I mentioned on the call last month that the next one would be on immunity but instead wound up releasing the Transcending Covid-19 Crisis audio which is now available in the shop.  In light of where things are focused now, we've updated the theme for this month to be about breaking through the energetic, emotional, financial barriers associated with the global lockdown. Is COVID Over Or Something? Gov. Cuomo Investigates Hamptons Concert & 700 Person Mansion Party In NJ Possibly Fueling Increase In Cases + Doja Cat - Who Trolled The Virus - Reveals She Tested Positive
Positive cases of COVID-19 are continuing to spike according to scientists. And they’re blaming large gatherings for fueling the numbers. Several huge events went down over the weekend and politicians, including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, are taking action. More inside…
With the United States approaching 150,000 COVID-19 related deaths, numbers of positive cases are still reportedly rising and healthcare officials say it’s still not time to ease up on safety precautions.
Every day, politicians and medical experts are reminding Americans to wear their face masks, social distance and practice good hygiene to slow down the spread of the virus. However, people aren’t listening and we’re starting to see the affects of how NOT following the guidelines is only making matters worse.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the Department of Health are now investigating a drive-in concert that went down in the Hamptons over the weekend.
Videos from a concert held in Southampton on Saturday show egregious social distancing violations. I am appalled,” Gov. Cuomo tweeted alongside a video from the concert. "We have no tolerance for the illegal & reckless endangerment of public health."

The "Safe & Sound" benefit concert took place in Southampton Saturday and it was headlined by The Chainsmokers. About 600 vehicles were allowed, according to an event page.
Right now, gatherings of more than 50 people are still banned in New York.
In New Jersey...
youtube
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy warns positive cases of Coronvirus is on the rise again in the Garden State. And he believes the rise is caused by large indoor parties.
On Tuesday, New Jersey reported 565 new COVID-19 cases, its highest daily total since June 6th. Gov. Murphy said the numbers suggest the state is no where near being “out of the woods.”
New Jersey’s total Coronavirus cases have climbed to 180,766 (on Wednesday) and there are 13,923 confirmed deaths related to the virus. Gov. Murphy said he’s not comfortable moving forward with reopening phases – like allowing indoor dining – with the way the positive cases are continuing to rise.
In Jackson, NJ, over 700 people gathered to turn up at a house party. It reportedly took police officers more than five hours to break it up. Earlier this month, a party in Middletown, NJ led to more than 20 teens (age from 15 to 19 years old) testing positive for the virus.
Health officials say they're worried the event will lead to more coronavirus cases.
Earlier this month, young people (between the ages of 15 and 25 years old) reportedly held a house party in Washtenaw County, Michigan which resulted in 43 positive cases of the virus. Health officials have been trying to trace everyone who attended the party, urging them to self-quarantine and to monitor their symptoms.
Last week, thousands of people in Minnesota attended a rodeo – many opting not to wear masks - in protest government overreach. We’re sure we’ll be hearing about a cluster of new COVID-19 cases stemming from this event in a few weeks.
Listen, we get it! No one wants to be stuck in the house longer than they have to, but this virus will continue to spread if people don’t stop being selfish and sit down long enough, at least without 699 other people, to get everything under control for longer than a week. You'll draw out the lock down time further the more you don't comply.

Living in a Sailboat Tree House - Stuck on Dry Dock (March 14 -April 13, 2019)
youtube
Cabedelo, Brazil, South America
For the past several weeks, we have been stuck on dry dock in the shipyard at Marina Jacaré Village here in Cabedelo, Brazil. It feels so strange to be on the boat, but not in the water. Living on dry dock is like living in a tree house. It’s not easy. It’s not convenient. But like everything else we have experienced so far, it’s another adventure.
During the past month, I took a two-week break and headed to our land home in Gulf Shores, Alabama, U.S.A. to work a little and visit with family and friends. I had not been home since before we set sail on this journey seven months ago.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, Maik continued to work on at least eight major projects during this past month—all while living in our sailboat tree house. Most of these projects are still ongoing. Here is a recap of our last month in Cabedelo, Brazil and Alabama, USA.
Thursday, 14 March 2019
We continue to be completely inspired by the other sailors we meet and their stories. We have been in Cabedelo for so long we have seen many sailors come and go. I’ve said this many times, but it’s important to say it again—with sailors, it’s never goodbye. We always know that there is a chance we will see our sailing friends again somewhere in the world at some point. This will make even more sense if you read all of this logbook entry, as well as previous entries.
In my last blog, I mentioned our friends, Robin and Philemon, who recently sailed down to Patagonia on the southern tip of South America. They sailed around Cape Horn and then sailed for 40 straight days up to Cabedelo. They have a very cool steel ship, Bekwaipa. This is a French word that Robin learned from his grandmother. Loosely translated, it means “the opposite of not stable.”
We were walking by their boat on the pontoon while they were working outside on boat projects and invited us onboard for a tour. This is not a bright, shiny, or fancy boat. The green and white steel structure is covered in rust and in some parts of the cabin there are no walls, only open insulation. But this is a STABLE boat, so the name fits!  Their inside layout is similar to Seefalke. It has the appearance of being messy and cluttered, but it’s very organized for them. They have creative rigs everywhere, including a long board with their depth sounder attached to the end. They simply hang this off the back stern when they need to test the depth of the water. It’s simple and unsophisticated, but it works.
They have surfboards on board and look like typical vagabond surfer dudes. They are so cool and are living a cool, free lifestyle. They are making plans to head back home for a month and then return here to sail to the Azores next.
That evening we ate dinner at our favorite outdoor meat-stick truck and eventually drew a crowd. We were joined by Robin and Philemon, Sophie and Tobias, and Felix and Emeline. Everyone but Maik drank Caipirinhas (the official Brazilian cocktail) and talked for hours about the addiction of sailing and the sailing lifestyle. There is a unique and instant connection with other sailors who love this lifestyle.
Friday, 15 March 2019
Christoph surprised us at breakfast with our finished cockpit boards. They had all been sanded and oiled and look brand new!
Again, we worked all day in marina. This is a very open and social area for the sailors here. The washrooms and showers are here, as well as a small diner with a limited menu, and a laundry service operated by a sweet Brazilian woman, Annabella. Most important, there are tables for working, hammocks for relaxing, and a cool breeze that makes its way through the open-air breezeway. A few tents overhead provide shade and protection from the rain.
There is a library full of books that you can read while in the lobby, or you can “leave one and take one.” Books are available in just about every language. This is also where the office of the Harbor Master is located as well as access to the marina maintenance crew.
But most important, this is where all the sailors hang out to get relief from the heat and of course, to talk with other sailors. There is always upbeat music playing, which we have trained ourselves to tune out while working.
There are a couple of stray cats and one kitten that has been adopted by all the sailors and marina crew. These cats drive Cap’n Jack and Scout crazy. We generally bring the Seadogs with us into the lobby every day while we work so that they also can get a break from the extreme heat.
We met another cool sailing couple, Mer and Dan. Mer is French, and Dan is British. They have been in Brazil for three months and head toward French Guiana next. They are young, not sure their exact age, but I would guess mid-to-late 20s. They have an apartment in London that they rent out for what they call a “ridiculously obscene price” and use the money they make from the rental to support their cruising kitty. They have no other source of income, so they always stay at anchor, never eat out (only cook on the boat), and do 100% of their boat maintenance themselves. I still find it fascinating that if you want to sail the world, you can find a way financially.
At dinner that evening, Maik and I talked about how on land our international relationship seems completely crazy. How ridiculous it seems to have a relationship with one person who lives in the US and the other who lives in Germany. People have asked us for the past six years how we manage this, and it isn’t easy. I wouldn’t recommend this kind of long-distance relationship, although we found a way to make it work all these years. But at sea, it’s completely normal and common for relationships to exist without borders. And no one we meet in these many ports seems at all surprised when we tell them I am from America and Maik is from Germany. In fact, it’s rare to find couples cruising together who are from the same country.
Tuesday, 19 March 2019
We had a lazy bag made by Christoph that we were set to install on this day. It was Maik’s turn to strap on the bosun chair and make the climb up the main mast to the top of the crow’s nest to install the rigging.
A lazy bag is a device designed to wrap itself around the main sail with lines attached to the mast spreader, creating a bag to capture the main sail when the halyard is released. The sail drops right into the bag. In addition to looking really nice and clean and organized, this is a safety feature when we are at sea. We no longer will have to fight the sail that may be flapping in heavy conditions when we try to bring it down, nor will we have to hand tie it on the foredeck. The sail will simply drop into the bag, the sail will be contained, and then we zip up the bag when conditions allow.
Wednesday, 20 March 2019
We said goodbye, for now, to Robin and Philemon, who headed to Europe by plane for a month. They were so sweet and baked us homemade bread before they left.
That afternoon, I interviewed Emeline for one of the international pumping magazines for which I often contribute articles. She is a female engineer who sails six months of the year, and then works on an offshore rig the other six months of the year. She is among the 1% of female engineers for her company. She is at sea even when she and Felix are not sailing the world in their little monohull, Sea You. It’s a fascinating story that I will post for you once it’s published.
I spent the rest of the week making a list of supplies to find while in Alabama and preparing for my trip to our land home.
BACK IN THE GOOD OLE USA (March 24 – April 8, 2019)
I had not been back in Alabama since Thanksgiving, and I had not been to our apartment in Gulf Shores since I left with the pups to fly to Germany on July 30, 2018. Seven months is a long time to be away from home.
I had an early flight from Recife, which meant I needed to leave the marina at 04:30 with our taxi driver/friend Marco to make the 2-hour drive to the airport.
It felt strange being on an airplane. The 8-hour flight was ok, but I had a 14-hour layover in Orlando. It was an overnight layover, so I decided to take a cheap hotel near the airport and sleep during the layover. This made the 1.5-hour flight to Pensacola the next day manageable and helped me quickly shake any jet lag.
My dear friend, Michele, picked me up from the airport.  I planned to stay two nights with her and Doug while we had renters in our apartment in Gulf Shores. Maik had given me a long list of boat supplies to find while in the states that we couldn’t get in Brazil. Michele and I went on the hunt at WalMart and Lowe’s. Oh, how I have missed these great American super stores!
We filled her car with supplies and headed back to her house for a barbecue with more friends — Steve, Catherine, Jenny, Fritz, and of course, Doug (Michele’s boyfriend). We had a blast catching up! It’s so great to see my American friends again!
I made it to Gulf Shores on Monday morning and struggled a bit to settle in. It didn’t feel like home without Maik and the pups, but I immediately got busy on several projects after visiting with more friends—Trisha, Krista, and Tom.
One of my main tasks for the trip was to try to sell enough things in my offsite storage unit to move to a smaller, cheaper storage unit. I was able to easily sell tons of old furniture items on Facebook Marketplace and brought a few things back to the apartment to use there. During the two weeks stateside, I was able to accomplish moving from a 10 x 10 storage unit to a 5 x 10 unit, cutting my footprint and the monthly payment in half. I was able to use the money gained from the furniture sales for all the boat supplies I needed to purchase.
Meanwhile, I also sold my car to my friend Trisha—my cool VW Beetle Convertible.  I love this car, but it’s just sitting there all these months, so now I can save money on the payments and insurance. It was a huge expense each month, so this is a relief to be free of that. We still have our old beat-up Jimmy truck that we can drive while in Gulf Shores, and this is all we really need. We barely need one car right now, and we definitely don’t need two!
I struggled to find a good rhythm at home—especially at first. I was enjoying the long, hot showers and the unlimited supply of ICE, but I found it hard to concentrate on real work. I thought I would love being in the civilized world so much that maybe I wouldn’t want to return to Brazil, but this only made me want to get back to the boat more. I continued to realize that some of the creature comforts I always thought I couldn’t live without are just not that important to me anymore.
As the famous sailor, Robin Lee Graham, once said, “At sea, I learned how little a person needs, not how much.”
My amazing son, Bo, came to visit me for the weekend. It was fantastic to have some very high-quality one-on-one time with him. I miss my kids so much and this is the hardest part of being at sea!
Bo and I spent the weekend talking, catching up, and watching all the Oscar-nominated movies. This is our tradition. We do it every year and come up with our own opinions of who should have won the Academy Awards. We highly recommend BlackkKlansman and Green Book. They were our favorites over the weekend, but we also liked The Wife and The Favourite.
We also spent some time over the weekend cheering on our Auburn Tigers with our neighbors, Tom and Krista! Our team made it to the NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament for the first time in history, but lost in the first round. It was cool to share the experience with other loyal Auburn fans and friends! War Eagle!!!!
During my second week home I got to spend a lovely dinner with friends/neighbors, Lynn and Mike, and then got a visit from my sis-in-law, Pam, and my niece, Allie, who drove all the way from Decatur to visit me for a couple days. We went to the beach and had a fabulous time together. We also went to Mobile and had dinner with my other sis-in-law, Dana, and my niece, Ashton, and nephew, Wells, at their restaurant, The Dumbwaiter.
It was fabulous seeing family, but I was devastated to not be able to spend any time with my parents or with my precious daughter, Shelby.
Time in Gulf Shores was productive and went by so fast. I loaded up three huge suitcases full of supplies for the boat, then headed back to Pensacola for another fun evening with Michele and Doug, and our friend, Shirley.
After an early flight out of Pensacola, I had another long layover in Orlando. This time it was 10.5 hours and during the day rather than overnight. I stayed at the airport and caught up on all the work I didn’t get done during my hometown visit.
BACK IN BRAZIL (April 9 – 14, 2019)
While I was in the U.S., Maik had moved Seefalke onto dry dock in the Marina Jacaré Village shipyard and had been extremely busy with repairs and upgrades.
As Marco drove me into the marina, I didn’t even recognize Seefalke. Her bright orange paint had been almost completely stripped from her hull and there were little bits of orange paint peelings all over the dirt ground in the shipyard.
Maik and the pups had gotten used to living on dry dock since the day after I left for the U.S., and I learned quickly what it’s like to live in a sailboat on dry land.
We have access to electricity and water, but we can’t use the head at all. There is a bathroom in the marina lobby, which is just a short walk from the shipyard, but it’s a major project to get in and out of the boat.
We have a swimming ladder attached to the back of the stern, but it’s not long enough to reach the ground while Seefalke is sitting on dry land. We have another traditional ladder leaned against Seefalke’s stern.  We climb a few steps on the regular ladder, then switch to the swimming ladder to climb the rest of the way to the top. On the way down, we use the swimming ladder then can switch to the regular ladder. We also have a huge oil can we can step onto on the way down. This system works, but it is especially inconvenient when I need to go to the potty in the middle of the night. But this is our situation at the moment.
As I mentioned earlier, living on dry dock is like living in a tree house!
Then, there is the issue of getting the Seadogs on and off the boat. Seefalke’s deck is about 3 meters (10 feet) off the ground. It would not be safe to try and carry Cap’n Jack and Scout up and down the ladder.
Maik used his engineering and seamanship skills to engineer a puppy crane for them. We strap them in their extraordinarily safe life vests, which have two handles on the top. Safety straps with D-rings connect the life vest handles to a line that is rigged with a block to the mizzen boom. Then we can simply lower them or raise them safely and securely with the well-designed puppy crane. They don’t seem to mind. Their tails are wagging the whole way. We posted a very cool video of this system for our Patrons. You can join our crew on Patreon for as little as $2 per month to get extra features like this.
ONGOING REPAIR AND UPGRADE PROJECTS
Paint Job
The paint job project is ongoing. At this point, we have scraped all the paint, sanded, and began the priming stages. Removing the paint is not as easy as it sounds as our ship had four decades of paint layers. Heavy rain delayed the project several days and continues to extend it.  Seefalke still needs several layers of primer, with sanding in between each layer, and then the bright orange paint.
Maik considered painting Seefalke a different color as he has never really loved the bright orange facade, but I wouldn’t let him. Her orange color is part of her character and personality. She was meant to be ORANGE!
After all that is finished, we will apply the coppercoat antifouling on Seefalke’s bottom and then give that coating a harsh sanding before putting her back in the water.
Fuel Leak
Sometimes, when you fix one thing on a sailboat, you uncover many other problems and issues. After Seefalke’s paint was scraped, we discovered a leak in the main diesel tank that is in the keel of the boat. There was a crack in the structure of the boat that we later learned was caused by the boat being placed on the support timber in the wrong place when we moved her out of the water. We have now emptied the tank and flushed it with water many times. The crack has been welded, but the next crucial task will be welding the tank from the inside. Again, more detail is available on Patreon.
Solar Panels
One of our other ongoing projects is installing our new solar panels, which have been ordered.
As you may remember we realized during our Atlantic Crossing that we have not quite reached energetic self-sufficiency yet. One of the old solar panels is down, and the other one is covered by the sails most of the time, while the wind generator remains behind our expectations.
We have decided to significantly upgrade our solar inventory from 90 W to 690 W. We will use the existing massive mast of the wind generator and will install a similar mast on the other side. On the beam between them we will install a 280 W solar panel and the support will also serve as davits for our dinghy.
In addition to the big solar panel on the stern we will install two smaller solar panels of 160 W each on each side of the sea fence. Those will get adjustable mounts to direct them toward the sun, if conditions allow.
The davits are a great side effect of the structure as we desperately need more space on the stern deck. Being able to move the dinghy to the davits will clear the stern deck almost entirely. Also, it will be much easier to deploy the dinghy, when needed. It was impossible to get the necessary blocks here in Brazil, so I bought them in the U.S. at West Marine in Orange Beach and brought them back with me, along with three huge suitcases full of other supplies we couldn’t find in Brazil.
New anchor & chain
You may remember that we had to leave our anchor and chain at the bottom of the sea in Fernado de Noronha during our Atlantic Crossing. This week, we received the new anchor and chain and will install it as soon as the painting is completed. We marked the 50-meter chain with white paint every 5 meters and orange paint every 10 meters (two sections for 20 meters, three sections for 30 meters, etc.) so that we will know the depth of the anchor as we raise it and lower it with the windlass.
For continuous detailed updates on these and other ongoing projects, join our crew on Patreon!
Meanwhile, we said goodbye, for now, to our German friends, Dieter and Claudia, who are headed to French Guiana. But on the same day, we said hello again to Robin and Philemon, who returned from their month-long break with family in Europe. It’s so hard to believe we have been sitting here this long!
We also said hello again to another French sailor we met in Cape Verde. He left Cape Verde about two weeks before we did and made his way to Brazil. He then went to El Salvador and then attempted a solo voyage to Cape Town, South Africa. But he didn’t make it. Somewhere along the way, the headwind and massive waves were impossible for him to maneuver. Somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, he made the decision to turn around and return to Brazil. He was at sea for 36 straight days and never made it to his destination. This is one sailor we definitely didn’t expect to see again so soon.
Meanwhile, we continue with our routine of working in the lobby every day and working on all these boat projects. This week, we will take a break from work and boat projects to explore Brazil a little. We really haven’t had the opportunity to do that yet. Maik heads to Germany next week to spend time with his daughter for Easter. Hopefully, when he returns, we will be closer to our next adventure—a cruise along the Amazon Delta. We are so ready to get back to sea. But for now, we will live in our dry dock tree house for at least another few weeks . . .

A Random Tuesday + Ryder is Three Months Old
Hey friends! As I sit down to write the first part of this blog post (all of my work seems to be completed in small fragments these days!), the sun is shining through my office window. After several back-to-back days of clouds, rain and storms, it feels nice to see the sun again! Temperatures are back to the mid-80s in Charlotte right now which makes me feel a little ridiculous for decorating our house for fall over the weekend but since Hurricane Florence had us hanging out at home, it seemed like a good time to knock it out.
Hello pumpkins!
I wanted to pop in today to share another random day-in-the-life recap with you guys and give you a peek into our Tuesday. Let’s get to it!
Morning
All plans I had for waking up before the boys went out the window when Ryder was up before the sun with me with no intent to go back down. Thankfully Ryder almost always wakes up in a great mood, full of gummy smiles and sweet baby chirps. He’s often content to kick and wiggle on a blanket in the mornings so I got dressed for the day and then brought Ryder downstairs with me and set him up on the floor while I made coffee and spent some time going through one of the chapters of my small group’s most recent study.
Ryder wasn’t up for too long before he was ready for a cat nap and so I swaddled him up, placed him in the Rock ‘n’ Play, made myself a smoothie and then got some work done on my laptop while he snoozed.
(Sorry it looks so gross! I swear anytime I add cocoa powder to a smoothie it instantly looks like cat puke.)
I spent my early morning work time tackling emails and following up on some upcoming partnerships before I heard Chase calling me from his room. Ryder was making noises as well, so I quickly nursed him and then we headed into Chase’s room to get dressed and read some stories before preschool.
Whenever I walk into Chase’s room in the morning he almost always asks me, “Mom, you have Baby Ryder?” and immediately wants to get in his little brother’s face. It’s actually been a nice little incentive to help Chase get dressed at warp speed since I tell him he has to be dressed like his little brother before playtime can begin. We read The Cat in the Hat and played in Chase’s room for a bit before making our way downstairs for breakfast and a little more playtime before we needed to head out the door.
Chase only has school two mornings this week thanks to a hurricane-related closure on Monday and a teacher work day today and he was more than ready to see his teachers and friends. He ran inside and gave me a dinosaur growl goodbye. (He was a velociraptor yesterday, in case you were wondering.)
Once Chase was settled in school, Ryder and I made our way to boot camp!
While Ryder hung out in childcare, I went through a total body strength workout that looked like this:
(The workout includes my modifications since I’m still modifying quite a bit.)
It felt good to move and sweat and Ryder seemed to do well in childcare. I chatted with some friends for a bit after my workout and then we headed home so I could nurse Ryder and get a little work done before preschool pickup. Ryder wasn’t in the mood for a long nap so my work time was cut a bit short but I took advantage of a very awake and very happy baby to snap some pictures of him to celebrate three months with this sweet guy!
I just love the way Ryder reacts to happy faces, voices and smiles. It’s almost like he looks at the world around him through the eyes of a tiny human sponge that just wants to absorb everything. His big gummy smiles seem to overtake his whole body and he’ll often curl up into a smiley ball that makes me smile right along with him.
Afternoon
Before heading out the door to pick Chase up from school, I figured I should take advantage of an awake and happy baby and made myself lunch. Everything came together quickly thanks to yet another Daily Harvest harvest bowl (the obsession continues!) and this time I added some shrimp and pumpkin seeds to the red lentil bowl.
(FYI you can use the code pbfingers to get three free cups on your first Daily Harvest order if you want to try it out!)
After I was done eating, I loaded Ryder into his car seat and the two of us picked Chase up from preschool before making our way back home. I let Chase unwind and play in our family room for a bit while I nursed Ryder before corralling everyone upstairs in Chase’s room for a nap time picnic. (I told you guys I do this ALL the time! So random but it works!)
Once Chase was down, I brought Ryder into our bathroom and put him in his Dock-a-Tot so I could grab a quick shower before I nursed him and put him down for a nap, too. With both boys sleeping, I made myself a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter (random snack but I was starving) and then began typing up this blog post. I ended up having TWO hours of time to work in the afternoon yesterday which felt like such a gift from my guys! It wasn’t fully uninterrupted (Ryder isn’t the most solid napper) but it still felt amazing to have time in the middle of the day to wrap up a future blog post and continue to chip away at my inbox.
Ryder was up before Chase and once he was done nursing, he seemed content to hang out with me in the kitchen in a little bouncer seat my friend Lauren gave me at preschool pickup yesterday. Ryder LOVES the bouncer seat in Burn Boot Camp’s childcare and since Lauren is doing a massive purge of baby things, she asked if we wanted her old one and I jumped at the offer. Ryder is a huge fan!!
With Ryder happy in his new bouncer seat, I quickly assembled dinner which looked like chickpea pasta paired with kale and shrimp. (I loosely followed this recipe from Clean Eating Magazine.)
We haven’t had the chance to get to the grocery store yet this week but I cooked up a big bag of shrimp we had in the freezer on Monday which worked well as a quick protein source in both my lunch and our family’s dinner. Freezer food for the win!
Evening
Chase woke up from his nap right around the time that we had a package delivery at the door. He was excited to thank our favorite UPS man (he’s practically a family friend at this point) and we immediately opened the large box to find the new comforter I ordered for our master bedroom.
I’m excited to see how it looks but sliiiightly concerned Ryan may veto this particular design choice and say it’s too frilly for his taste. We’ll see!
We spent the rest of the afternoon at home splitting time between our backyard where Chase “helped” clear our patio of debris from the weekend storm (thank you Aunt Laurie for his sweeper brush!) and our kitchen where we made a new batch of chocolate energy bites with dates, oats, peanut butter, flax seed, honey and cocoa powder.
Since Chase took a longer nap than usual yesterday, he was amped around dinnertime and had no interest in settling down to eat. He was also pretty content to play by himself with his toys and since this coincided with an evening cat nap for Ryder, I decided to roll with it and took advantage of the time to clean up the kitchen. Ryan arrived home a little after 7 p.m. and after a quick round of soccer with Chase, we all settled down for dinner. I reheated the pasta I prepared earlier in the day and we dug in!
Eventually we made our way upstairs and did the whole bed time routine. We finally had both boys asleep around 8:30 p.m. Ryan and I chatted for a bit before we were both ready to call it a night. I read my book until my eyes could no longer stay open. (I’m currently reading Total Control by David Baldacci. I like the story line and look forward to reading it at the end of the day but there’s something about the way the author refers to the main female character that irks me over and over again.)
Today should be a good one over here as Chase has the day off from school and we have some fun plans with friends at a local park on the agenda this morning! I hope you all have a great Wednesday and I hope to see ya back here tomorrow for a yummy recipe I have coming your way!

Q&A: ‘Making It’ Premiers on NBC
By now you may have seen the premiere episode of Making It, which premiered last Tuesday and features BFF executive producers/hosts Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. Making It is a uniquely lighthearted competition series celebrating the creativity and craftiness in all of us.
In this six-episode competition, Jeff Rudell, an openly gay man, is one of the eight super talented makers that will compete with the hopes of impressing Poehler, Offerman and the expert judges, Simon Doonan and Dayna Isom Johnson through various crafting challenges.
Because Jeff’s father worked in a paper mill when he was growing up, his background of working with cardboard, foil and tissue molded him into the creative paper props craftsman he is today. He creates for clients such as Tiffany & Company, Unilever, New York Botanical Gardens, and a wide range of print and online publications. He currently lives in New York with his husband and an enormous grey cat named Smokey.
youtube
It was a pleasure to sit down with cast member Jeff Rudell for this exclusive Hotspots Interview.
At what age did crafting become an interest?
I come from a crafting background, as I grew up in a farm in Michigan. My mom made quilts and my dad was a woodworker. From very early on, I was encouraged to make my own things. When I was 8, the first thing I made was a fake typewriter. I still have it, it sits on a shelf in my studio.
When did crafting become your full time profession?
In 1989, I left my Job in the American Academy in Rome as I got an opportunity to do window displays at Tiffany’s. I was lucky enough to meet the guy who hires for that and he loved my projects and the rest is history. I became the head of visual merchandising at Tiffany’s.
What is the most expensive thing you ever sold?
I made a little tiny job while watching TV. It was for a photo shoot for a shampoo company and I got paid $10,000 for such a small amount of work. The reason I got paid so much is there was a usage fee.
What is the best thing you have ever made?
Popular opinion would be a series of Baroque inspired French Wigs. They are very elaborate and beautiful and have a lot of visual impact. However, my favorite piece is a little tiny book that had a poem that I wrote. I put this book in a hollowed out walnut with a hinge and had a sign that said “Open Me.” I sent this to all my clients the first year I was in business. I didn’t have very much money, so I had to send something that didn’t cost a lot. I wanted to thank all the people that took a chance on me. I think I spent $10 for everything and it has reverberated throughout my career.
How did you get cast on “Making it”
I am somewhat known in my area and they sent out a casting call. It was appealing to me, so I applied. I got a huge amount out of it.
How was it to work with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman?
Amazing, as they are exactly as they appear on TV. They are funny, and real, and have a straight forward approach. They were very generous and hospitable. Nick is a master craftsman, and Amy claims to not have a crafty bone in her body, but that’s not true. She is super inquisitive and creative.
Have you stayed friends with the other contestants?
I have. We all have, kind of. Everyone was very friendly, supportive and warm on the set.
How long have you been with your husband and was it hard to be away from him while filming?
I have been with my hubby since 2003, and I have only been away from my husband on 2 occasions. When I was cast on the Martha Stewart Apprentice show in 2005 and then again now when we filmed “Making It.” It was really hard to be away from him, but it helped that he is a gigantic reality TV fan.
What do you do for fun?
I do crafting for fun. Even though it’s my job, I love doing it. I also love to cook, entertain friends and work out.
What does the future hold for Jeff?
I don’t have any idea, but that’s the exciting part. I live in the moment. I get ahead by saying yes to the new jobs. I hope I will get more interesting work, and larger scale work.

Pete Davidson Reflects on His 'Dream' Engagement Week With Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson can't contain their excitement!
Ever since news broke on Monday that the "No Tears Left to Cry" singer was engaged to the Saturday Night Live star, just a few weeks after making their romance Instagram official, the lovebirds have been giving fans little sneak peeks into their relationship via social media.
On Friday, Davidson posted a black-and-white snapshot of his fiancée sitting on his lap, and showing off her massive diamond ring.
"U know what you'd dream it be like?" he captioned the pic. "It's better than that."

A post shared by Pete Davidson (@petedavidson) on Jun 15, 2018 at 12:16pm PDT
Around the same time, Grande shared a video of Davidson to her Instagram Stories, explaining to fans that her beau was "excited" for his haircut as he danced around to Kid Cudi and Kanye West's new track, "4th Dimension," from Kids See Ghosts. Davidson, who credits Cudi for saving his life, recently attended the artist's listening party for the album with Grande by his side.

— Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) June 15, 2018
Although it's only been four days since their engagement news broke, Grande and Davidson, both 24, have already gifted us with so much to obsess over this week... and we can't wait for more. In case you missed it, here's a mini recap of everything that's happened since Davidson got down one knee:
Monday
ET learned that the two became engaged after just a few weeks of dating, and that Grande has already met Davidson's mother. "Pete introduced Ariana to his mother at Zuma in New York during one of the SNL after-parties," the source said. "Ariana spent the majority of the night hanging out with her [Amy Waters Davidson]. Pete was circulating the room with the cast but Ariana was super comfortable being with [Amy]."
Grande seemingly confirmed the news via Twitter, liking and responding to fans who sent her "congratulations" messages.
Late into the evening, the newly engaged couple celebrated at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, with Grande's brother, Frankie, and mother, Joan.

An additional source told ET that Grande shouldn't have any trouble planning her wedding, as it's something she's been dreaming up since, basically, forever. "Ariana has talked about marriage since she was 15," the source said. "During her teen years, she was always very dreamy about a wedding and she used to call friends and talk about one day having that one special person."
"Ariana also spoke about a winter wedding, which seemed a little cold, but she loves the idea of a winter wonderland-type scene," the source added. "We used to laugh about her fun ideas of a snowy wedding day."
While Davidson and Grande continued to be on cloud nine, two of the comedian's exes, Carly Aquilino and Cazzie David, seemingly shaded the quick proposal via Instagram.
Wednesday
ET caught up with Grande's former Sam & Cat co-star, Jennette McCurdy, at the Damsel premiere in Los Angeles, where she raved over her pal's exciting news.
"I'm super proud of her and excited for her," McCurdy said. "I hope that she's super happy."
"They seem like they're a great fit," she added, telling ET she "better" get an invite to the wedding. "From what I know of her, he seems like exactly a good person for her."
Thursday
Despite all the criticism he received from former girlfriends, Davidson's close friends appeared to have his back this week. Glen Powell said he was FaceTiming with the couple just moments before his interview on SiriusXM's Chicks in the Office podcast.
"They're two sides of the same coin. I'll say they're both wonderfully bizarre in their own ways," he said of the pair. "I actually think, look, I've only hung out with them a couple times together. I know Ari from Scream Queens. Pete and I met on this movie [Set It Up], but we talk all the time and he's become a really close buddy of mine."
But apparently, Powell is not as close buds with Davidson as Nick Cannon is, who told ET that the comedian called him before the proposal!
"He called before he was going to do it, and I said, 'Salud!'" Cannon shared. "He was really excited, so I was like, 'I love it, man. Keep it going.' Love is in the air!"
While Davidson's friends were marveling over the proposal, Grande was busy hitting the stage at the Songwriters Hall of Fame's 49th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner in New York City, marking her first performance since the engagement news.
Naturally, all eyes were on Grande's sparkler, with photographers zooming in on her left hand to capture the perfect shot of her engagement bling.

Ramblings: Hampus Hat-Trick (Dec 22)
The best fantasy options in hockey are the Islanders’ top line and whoever is facing off against the Islanders. Last night’s big winner: Hampus Lindholm netting a hat-trick against Jaroslav Halak.
Lindholm could probably have more relevance, but he’s stuck behind Cam Fowler and Brandon Montour for power play time. He does have some value in leagues scoring hits and blocked shots because he’s capable of netting 30 points and piling up big peripherals in a shutdown role.
Montour had an excellent bounce-back after being a healthy scratch on Tuesday night. He notched an assist and fired eight SOG. I’m not sure there’s room for Montour to have universal relevance with Fowler eating up the top minutes, but he remains a dynamic offensive talent. He has proven a capable #1 option and is absolutely the guy any time that Fowler is absent.
Ryan Getlaf has run his scoring streak to five games, peaking with last night’s four-assist performance. I don’t think you need me to tell you that he is a stud, but it’s amazing that he isn’t universally owned. I know that Getzlaf has been limited because of injuries, but he’s got point-per-game talent so even after missing 20+ games he has value in season-long leagues.
*
A flu riddled Bruins squad clawed out a 2-1 shootout win over the Jets to continue Tuukka Rask’s hot run. He has allowed just 15 goals in his last 10 starts, an incredible run. Rask’s game has really taken off since the Bruins were able to reunite the line of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak. That line has folded the opposition to an extreme degree.
Marchand was questionable to play with that flu bug, but managed to suit up. Both Ryan Spooner and Riley Nash were held out. This is something to watch for on Saturday, when every team in the league, but Calgary, plays. No sense in taking a chance on a maybe in your lineup when you’ll have other options.
Those injuries saw the return of Frank Vatrano to the Bruin lineup. Remember him?
Vatrano has scarcely played despite the opportunities that have been afforded to youngsters throughout Boston’s lineup. This is a testament to how well Danton Heinen, Jake DeBrusk and Anders Bjork have performed, but it is also damning of Vatrano. The once promising youngster is drowning with just two points in 20 games and has been unable to scratch out more than 10 minutes per game when he has played. He is venturing into that tweener zone that precedes full on bust status.
We’re less than two seasons removed from Vatrano scoring 36 goals in 36 games at the AHL level and following that up with eight points in 10 games for the US at the World Championship. It feels impossible given that pedigree that Vatrano hasn’t translated into an NHL regular. He is still only 23, but I wonder if he needs a fresh start on a rebuilder or if last season’s injury is still impacting him.
*
The Blue Jackets have now scored a power-play goal in four of the last five games, a stretch in which they are 4/17. Keep an eye on this heading into the second half. If they are even run-of-the-mill bad instead of completely impotent they’ll have some players emerge as useful fantasy options. Columbus has settled into the following group as their top unit:
Artemi Panarin – Alexander Wennberg – Cam Atkinson – Pierre-Luc Dubois – Seth Jones
This has come without Zach Werenski for the past two games due to injury. He looms as a threat to bump Jones or one of the forwards, but given the Blue Jacket PP woes Werenski has not been guaranteed top unit minutes. Werenski’s good enough to maintain relevance without top unit time, but it would cap him out at roughly 40 points, which is a far cry from our expectations after his breakout rookie season.
I am growing smitten with Dubois who is centering what has been an elite top line for Columbus with Panarin and Josh Anderson. Dubois getting top unit PP time with it actually clicking is icing on the cake. He has 12 points in his last 13 games. He is trending towards being a second-half star. If you don’t have room for him yet, keep him on the watch list.
*
Patric Hornqvist did indeed return for Pittsburgh after a game off due to injury. He skated just 14:04 on the third line, but was back as the net-front man on the top PP unit.
Conor Sheary has completely vanished from relevance with just three points in the last 15 games. It would take a few hurdles for Sheary to jump back into relevance. He’d need to get back into the top-six consistently AND the Penguins would have to get their act together at 5-on-5.
On the plus side, the Penguins are currently sitting outside the playoffs, which puts them in position to need a big second half. This is not dissimilar from the situation for the Lightning when they rode Nikita Kucherov down the stretch in an effort to make the post-season. This will benefit Pittsburgh’s best, and Sheary could potentially see some trickledown from that if on the right line. I have much more confidence in Jake Guentzel and Hornqvist than Sheary as far as secondary options on Pittsburgh go.
*
Some lineup shuffling for New Jersey with Jesper Bratt sitting out with an injury and Marcus Johansson returning from injury. Check out the lines:
#1           23.7%    GIBBONS,BRIAN – JOHANSSON,MARCUS – ZAJAC,TRAVIS
#2           22.3%    HALL,TAYLOR – HISCHIER,NICO – PALMIERI,KYLE
#3           18.6%    BOYLE,BRIAN – COLEMAN,BLAKE – NOESEN,STEFAN
#4           16.3%    STAFFORD,DREW – WOOD,MILES – ZACHA,PAVEL
You have to figure that Bratt will bump Brian Gibbons back to the fourth line when he returns, giving the Devils two juicy scoring lines. Obviously, the place to be is on that top line with Taylor Hall. Nico Hischier and Kyle Palmieri are locked in there.
Palmieri notched a pair of assists and will be an awesome fantasy option if he can stay healthy, which has been an issue throughout his career. He is getting you exposure to Hall at even strength AND on the top PP unit and is a bonafide 30-goal-scorer himself. A lot to like with Palmieri.
Hischier notched an assist to end a six-game scoring slump, but the overall trend here is downward. Without top unit PP time he will struggle to sustain relevance.
*
Mika Zibanejad has been held off the board in two games since returning from injury, but he is back in his top line spot, as well as being back on the top power play unit. All of the ingredients are there for Zibanejad to get back to near point-per-game production. He is available in over 40% of Yahoo leagues, and is a must-own if available.
*
I am more than happy to share Dobber’s thoughts on Cam Talbot:
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Six straight wins for Cam Talbot. Looks like I jumped the gun making him the cover player on my Midseason Guide as a "Can they bounce back?" question…</p>— Dobber (@DobberHockey) <a href="https://twitter.com/DobberHockey/status/944064598092550149?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 22, 2017</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
I mentioned a counter-offer I made in one of my leagues yesterday and it was accepted. I landed Talbot and Sean Couturier for Scott Darling and Vladislav Namestnikov. Suffice it to say that I am very pleased to be landing Talbot. I had him as one of four top tier goaltenders. With the Oilers pushing to get back into the playoff picture he could be in for a huge second half. I think the buy-low window is still open.
*
Over the last few weeks Jason Spezza has shown flickers of returning to relevance. Last night he was back on the top power play unit, where he has been used sparingly this season, but more frequently over the past few weeks. His PPP was his first since November 18. He has five points in 11 games this month. We aren’t at a point where we should get him back onto our teams, but the flashes are there.
Tyler Seguin ended an eight-game goal scoring slump with a pair of goals. He has been shooting like crazy, on pace for 349 SOG. With that kind of shot volume, he’s a threat for 40 goals, even with Ken Hitchcock tightening the reins. It helps that Seguin’s shooting percentage has bounced back after scoring on just 8.6% of his shots.
*
After a scorching November, Alex DeBrincat has come crashing back to earth. He has just one goal and four points in nine games this month. A slowdown was inevitable considering he has not been seeing top unit PP time, or anything in the way of exposure to Patrick Kane.
DeBrincat had seen his minutes bumped into the 16-17 -minute range while skating alongside Jonathan Toews and Brandon Saad, but he has been limited to below 15 minutes in each of the past two games. With DeBrincat failing to click alongside Toews and Saad he could be shuffled back down the lineup.
Saad, by the way, has spent the past few weeks punted off the Blackhawks’ top PP unit. He is still a threat to score 50 points, but that is rapidly becoming his ceiling after a slow start. Increased PP usage should have helped Saad break out to 60+ points, but instead he has struggled to score in all phases. He still provides enough shot volume to have relevance in a lot of leagues, but he’s turned into waiver fodder for me in 10-/12-team leagues.
Brent Seabrook has gobbled up top PP minutes over the past couple of weeks, but simply has not clicked. His last PP point came back in October. He still has use in multi-cat leagues, but cannot be counted on for any reasonable amount of points.
*
The Hurricanes handed the reins over to their second PP unit for last night’s game giving Jeff Skinner and Co. the bulk of the minutes. The result: a 2/6 performance for a team desperate to kickstart a bottom-five power play. I doubt that this is a long-term option for Carolina, but it also isn’t a terrible idea to get Skinner more time with the man-advantage. It’s crazy that Skinner is a perennial 30-goal threat despite this being the fourth straight season of him seeing only secondary PP time. The only reason I trust Skinner to remain relevant with this sort of deployment is that he has proven he can do it.
Noah Hanifin had a big three-point performance that should alert you to his emergence as a relevant option. Hanifin is far from universal relevance. He is skating only 18:25 per game, with usage on that same #2 PP unit as Skinner. He is being used in favourable situations with almost two thirds of his shifts starting in the offensive zone. He has taken advantage piling up big shot totals.
Despite the secondary usage, Hanifin is on pace for 17 goals, 46 points and 191 SOG. Those totals would be relevant in every fantasy league, but I am skeptical that he’ll keep shooting 8.9%. He came into the season with a 3.5% career average. I will never tell you not to use a player who is producing well, but I don’t think that what Hanifin has done is particularly sustainable, despite his obvious talent.
Justin Faulk, as snake-bitten as he has been, represents the better option going forward. His assist ended a 12-game scoreless drought. He has just eight points in 34 games and is shooting just 1.1%. The career 6.6% shooter should certainly improve. Faulk is accustomed to getting points on roughly half of all the goals with him on the ice, but has instead scored on just 23% of said goals. Every single metric screams regression, but I understand why you’d have dropped him by now. Games 1-34 Hanifin has clearly been the better option, but I’d still bet on Faulk producing more in games 35-82.
*
Craig Smith was held out of the Predator lineup due to a lower-body injury. No timeline for Smith, but this could derail what has been an excellent run for him ever since Kyle Turris arrived in Nashville. The trio of Smith, Turris and Kevin Fiala have all scored at a point-per-game clip for over a month now.
Scott Hartnell took Smith’s spot on that line and on the top PP unit alongside Filip Forsberg et al. Smith’s absence was not enough to slow down Kevin Fiala who has scored a goal in five straight games and eight of the last nine. With this kind of run, Fiala is plug and play, no matter your format. I suspect he’ll slow down at some point because of reduced minutes, but you cannot ignore this hot run from an extremely talented player.
*
Aaron Dell stole away another start from Martin Jones. He wasn’t overly impressive conceding four goals on 40 shots, but did enough to win his fifth straight. I discussed Dell’s threat to Jones in Tuesday’s ramblings, so I won’t reiterate that, but this will only help Dell to chip away at Jones’ starting gig.
San Jose’s power play has gone absolutely bonkers over the past couple of weeks. They have scored on the PP in seven straight games going 12/33 in that stretch. With this run of excellence, the Sharks have climbed into the top-10 in PP efficiency at 22.2%. Crazy what a couple of weeks can do.
For the most part it’s been the usual suspects getting it done for San Jose. Brent Burns has led the way with 11 points in these seven games, eight of those coming with the man-advantage, but there has been plenty of offense to go around. Joe Thornton has nine points in these seven games, demanding to be scooped back up after being left for dead a month ago. We have also seen Kevin Labanc and Tomas Hertl get in on the action, especially with Logan Couture out with a concussion.
Labanc had a four-point night, including scoring the overtime winner. He has nine points of his own over the past seven games, with four coming on the power play. If this keeps up, his spot on that top unit is safe.
*
As fantasy players you’ll love this one from Elliotte Friedman’s latest 31 Thoughts:
29. Wanted to empty the Derek Dorsett notebook from our conversation with him. First, he confirmed Ryan Johansen’s hilarious story about the penalty-minutes race from 2011–12. Dorsett entered game 82 of the season in second place, nine minutes behind Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo. Johansen said Dorsett told him to start a scrum, so the latter could “come in hot” and pass Rinaldo. Dorsett, however, said he got only seven minutes out of it and needed more mayhem. The opponent that day was the New York Islanders, and Matt Martin understood what was going on. One fight later, Dorsett owned the crown.
I’m not a huge fan of PIM as a fantasy stat. Generally speaking, PIM are a negative stat. That being said, I have always enjoyed the strategy of streaming in an enforcer to try and steal away the PIM category. It’s hilarious to know the NHLers get up to these shenanigans in the real games.

Will The Gov’t Shutdown? – Daily Pfennig
Chuck Butler’s: A Pfennig For Your Thoughts
December 6, 2017
* Dollar Gets Bought…
* RBA leaves rates unchanged
Good Day… And A Wonderful Wednesday to you! The Pfennig lost the coin toss this morning, so that’s the reason this is later than usual…  As I said last Wednesday.. Better late than never, right?  Things are still not back to normal around here for me, and so the Pfennig suffers. Hopefully, things begin to normalize for me…  Bob Seger and his Silver Bullet Band greets me this morning with their song: Turn The Page, which is exactly what I would like to do with this period of my life!
Well, we finally saw some movement in the currencies yesterday and overnight, with the dollar getting bought, and the currencies slipping. Again, the move isn’t great shakes, but it still is noticeable, so therefore it registers on the Richter Scale.. HA!
There’s an article on the Bloomberg this morning that’s talking about how the dollar will see more selling in 2018, even with the Fed in rate hike mode. The article points out that the dollar has seen its worse year in the last decade in 2017, and the analysts writing the article believe that the impetus toward a lower dollar in 2018, will come from a revival of global growth, and rate hikes that challenge the Fed’s rate hikes all over the globe…
This article falls in line with the one I told you about on Monday from UBS that talked about how they saw a global tightening of credit in 2018..   So, remember earlier this year when I would talk about how I was seeing signs of a revival of global growth, and called it the “Global Growth Tent Revival”?  Once again I was ahead of the crowd on this call, but did anyone listen to me? I doubt it…  So, listen to me now and hear me later, this Global Growth thing has potential, and that’s it…
There are plenty of athletes that have “potential” but very few of them “make it”…  So, while I agree with the article that the dollar will find it a tough row to hoe in 2018, I’m thinking it will have more with the Fed losing whatever credibility they have left, when they have to reverse their moves this year…  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Things in the U.K. aren’t so rosy these days.. Seems PM May, is backing into a corner on her views regarding BREXIT, and the leaders of the BREXIT move aren’t agreeing with her views… And then there was this latest poll in the U.K. that showed a majority of citizens still believe in BREXIT, but believe it will end badly…
Well, so do I, so we have something in common, eh?  The pound was flying high as last week ended, but these new developments with the BREXIT negotiations have pulled the pound back down.
One day after seeing the A$ and kiwi climb to the top of the performers’ list, the both got sold overnight. The A$ took the biggest hit, and the kiwi selling was more of a “sympathy trade”…  The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) met last night and left rates unchanged, which everyone expected, but then the RBA had this to say, that I’m sure had something to with the A$ selloff..  The RBA said that they were in no hurry to hike rates, which led the markets to think that their earlier thoughts of a rate hike in the 1st QTR of 2018, will have to be pushed back…
You know, I’m still amazed at the dollar’s underwhelming reaction to the passage of the Tax Reform Bill last weekend… I mean wasn’t this tax bill supposed to be the cat’s meow for the reflation trade here in the U.S. ?  Or… was all that already priced in to the dollar?  It sure appears that way to me…
So, I’m thinking that if the dollar can’t mount a huge rally on the news that the tax reform bill, then it really is in the stage of beginning to end the strong dollar trend…    I’ll stop there and let that last thought sink in a bit…
OK,  I’m back! Gold got whacked again yesterday.. UGH! Just what the heck these sellers are thinking is a mystery, and while I don’t plan to attempt to get into their heads, I will say that I think they are all somewhat lost…  So, Gold lost $9.70 yesterday with 302,000 contracts traded…  Craziness here too folks..  Gold closed below its 200-day moving avg. yesterday according to Ed Steer, and began the day at $1,265.90 today…
The U.S. Data Cupboard yesterday had the Rocktober Trade Deficit and it printed worse than expected! The Trade Deficit widened to $48.7 Billion up from the September print of $44.9 Billion… That’s a HUGE swing folks, and while it signals heaps of imports, it also signals that the dollar was stronger in Rocktober than in September…
Today’s Data Cupboard has the ADP Employment Report, which is supposed to give us an idea what the BLS Jobs Jamboree print will be on Friday..  Last week, my fave economist, Danielle Di Martino Booth, asked readers to send in their favorite employment indicator. She was looking for something not followed by everyone but was better than the BLS report…  I almost sent her my feelings on the ADP report…
I’ve said many times that I think the country should ditch the BLS and use the ADP report as their “employment go to report”… ADP is the payroll system for almost every corporation or small business in this country, and if they show that 190,000 jobs were added in a month, they should be the ones who know!
To recap…  The dollar got bought on Tuesday and overnight but the moves aren’t huge. U.K. PM May is hearing it from all sides on BREXIT, and the citizens of the U.K. think BREXIT will end up badly… This all weighs on the pound. The RBA left rates unchanged and sent the A$ downward with some comments about not seeing the need to hike rates for some time…
For What It’s Worth… Well, this Friday is the deadline for a budget deal here in the U.S. Recall that the lawmakers kicked the can down the street a couple of months ago, to this Friday… And I read this morning, that there will be another bill to delay it another two weeks… This is more craziness folks… And I doubt the Fed will hike rates on the 13th, if there’s no budget deal in place, or the Gov’t is in shutdown mode…  You don’t have to take my thoughts on this as James Rickards weighed in with his thoughts in the Daily Reckoning (www.dailyreckoning.com) yesterday, and I have some of that for you here…  you can click on the link above for the full story…
Or… here’s your snippet: “Will Republicans and Democrats agree on a budget, and avoid a government shutdown after midnight Friday?
I’d say the odds are 50/50. Actually, I put the odds of a shutdown at about 55%. There’s certainly enough substance here to be wary.
The government could shut down because of disagreements over defense spending, funding for Trump’s wall with Mexico, deportation of illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children (the “Dreamer Act” also referred to as “DACA”), funding for Planned Parenthood, funding for Obamacare (called “SCHIP”), disaster relief and more.
There’s not much middle ground between Democrats and Republicans on many of these hot button issues.”
Chuck again…  I don’t believe the lawmakers will allow the Gov’t to shut down, so look for that “extension” if you will, to save the day this Friday…
Currencies today 12/6/17… American style: A$ .7585, kiwi .6899, C$ .79, euro 1.1804, sterling 1.3384, Swiss $1.0111, … European Style: rand 13.5260, krone 8.2605, SEK 8.4068, forint 266.41, zloty 3.5698, koruna 21.7142, RUB 58.69, yen 112.49, sing 1.3481, HKD 7.8126, INR 64.48, China 6.6140, peso 18.80, BRL 3.2385, Dollar Index 93.37, Oil $56.89, 10-year 2.33%, Silver $16.07, Platinum $907.14, Palladium $996.05, and Gold… $1,267.70
That’s it for today…  Well, our Blues got back on the winning track last night in Montreal. They had gone into a funk, but looked much better last night. Winter weather has arrived here in the St. Louis area… I don’t like cold weather one iota, and longtime readers know that I head to S. Florida in January to get away from the cold. But then there’s always this cold weather in December that I despise! At least now that I’m somewhat retired, I don’t have to go out in it if I don’t want to! So I have that going for me, eh? Nilson takes us to the finish line today with his song: Without You…  And with that, out of the way, it’s time to go… I hope you have a Wonderful Wednesday, and Be Good To Yourself!
Chuck
