#and learn ukrainian while i'm at it
Note
Hello! Sorry, but as a native russian speaker 'Алёнка' can't be translated as 'little deer' at all💀. A deer is 'олень', a little deer would be 'оленёнок'. 'Алёнка' is a diminutive form of a name 'Алёна', hence the girl, not a 'babushka' on the cover of the chocolate bar...
Oh you're all good! I'm not native to Russia or Ukraine (I'm from the US) and I haven't taken a Russian class since I was 5 years old, so most of my Russian was learned from listening to my Ukrainian family since childhood (they can speak both Russian and Ukrainian) so I'm not too keen on the technical stuff of the language, but can still speak it fairly fluently, as well as read it and translate. I can't write in Russian though, my handwriting isn't good enough for that.

I keep getting distracted from doing my actual projects as of late it's getting annoying. Hopefully I get to wake up on my alarm later to do some work. Look for a new clinic that could give me earlier service within the year and then rewrite Cassia's section of the chapter. Made some new canons to her family's story and this girl really needs therapy.

Today I learned about an online library/collection called Diasporiana.org.ua
It has thousands of books and periodicals in Ukrainian and English (though generally not in both as in you can't just download a pdf in either language) from multiple time periods uploaded for your reading necessity/pleasure. I found it while I was looking for St*linist Rule in the Ukraine: A Study of the Decade of Mass Terror.
There is no way for me to tell you what all is in here besides that book though, I'm afraid haha. But it looks like a fair variety. It appears it is books from those in Ukraine and those in the Diaspora (naturally given the site name duhhh Jacen). I can't tell you where the cutoff point is, if it stops during the fall of the Wall or not.
According to the webmaster's patreon: "the world's only electronic resource dedicated to the preservation of the intellectual heritage of Ukrainian emigration and dispersion. About 20,000 unknown or previously unavailable editions are freely available."
Make of it what you will

My Rtc Headcannons ^^
Notes: I ship Nischa and Perfectdolls so expect that and I'm going to interchange Savannah and Ricky's names for their character. I haven't watched Legoland, and this is an au if they all survived the accident. That's all. Enjoy! ^^
Ricky and Constance both write fanfics and have each other proofread it.
Mischa cries during every movie with a found family trope.
Ocean is an extreme perfectionist and has a hair brush on her 24/7 just in case her hair messes up.
Penny knows a bunch of random animal facts.
They all learned sign language in order to communicate with Ricky better
Mischa started crushing on Noel first but told himself that he just wanted to be best friends.
Penny and Noel really enjoy poetry and get together just to show each other it. They both have written some for their respective partners.
Ocean and Mischa are surprisingly close because Ocean used to tutor him when he was first learning English.
They all HATE Karnak and after the accident Mischa burned the machine.
Jane and Ricky both really enjoy stargazing.
Ocean's parents are both drug addicts.
Ocean is a sex repulsed asexual, a lesbian and transfem
Mischa is transmasc and bi
Noel is genderfluid, Ricky is enby and bi.
Constance is Pan, and Penny is a lesbian demigirl.
Mischa is really good at remembering languages.
Constance carries a bunch of sweets on her all the time.
Savannah knows a bunch of gossip because people talk about it in front of them all the time. He tells it to Penny all the time and she uses it as blackmail.
Talia is the sweetest person to ever grace the face of the earth and the whole choir loves her.
Ocean has really mean intrusive thoughts about people and sometimes says them out loud when she's rambling.
Penny likes to braid Ocean's hair.
Mischa and Talia have openly sexted on other people's YouTube comment sections.
Noel knows a bunch of different instruments and sometimes teaches them to choir.
Mischa hangs out at Taco Bell with Noel when he gets bored at work.
They're all terrified of Rollercoasters now.
Constance is a swiftie.
They all go to Mischa's house the most because his room is the biggest and he has the most games.
Ocean is the tallest and Constance is the shortest.
Mischa has made a bunch of music videos in his bedroom.
Savannah is good at writing music and sometimes writes Mischa rap music for his YouTube channel.
Noel has learned Ukrainian secretly to surprise Mischa. He also knows a bit of French (mostly the swears)
Ocean is super competitive and turns into a completely different person while playing games.
Constance has made a scrapbook of the Choir (with a bit of Ocean's help).
That's all for now! ^^

Just learned one of my favorite Ocean liner/Titanic artists, Anton Logvynenko, is dead.
Tumblr media
From the Titanic community, I've learned he is Ukrainian and joined their military last year, to protect his homeland from Russia. He was killed fighting in the front lines on November 27.
His post from his Facebook page talking about joining the fight: link
"Hello there ocean liners lovers!
I'm sorry for not being posting here my new artworks or any updates for a while... The process of creation one digital drawing takes about 3 months itself but now situation is more complicated.
As you may know, russia has attacked my country and they are trying to occupy the whole Ukraine and even move forward to Europe. So I joined our Military Forces of Ukraine to protect my homeland.
I hope to get back to you soon with my new drawings after our Victory. But till this happens I ask you to support Ukraine and our army in any suitable for you way.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely yours, Anton Logvynenko"

I went to see my teacher the other day, hadn't been to my old school in ages. Since it's the centre of the city, she told me missiles were flying over the school during air raids and sometimes the kids barely had the time to hide in the basement.
On my way home I passed a small trophy weaponry installation, with broken russian tanks and artillery that was beyond repair and couldn't be reused for fighting back in the war. Among those were missiles, similar to those used against us, the civilians, including me. When I hide in the corridor with my family and shake while explosions sound from different directions, I can't imagine clearly what is exactly the danger in the air. I kinda envision a meteor or a burning essence of death staring at my home with hunger and bloodlust. But it's a piece of metal with a huge pack of dynamite covered in various wires. It's thick as a human and slightly taller than me, around 2 meters long I think (I'm 170cm).
A piece of ugly death, the kind everyone in the world is afraid to meet, just out here, dormant, quiet, dead. And then you go away from it, following the usual routes on the streets, because there is so much to do to survive, but the metal piece of death is still there, it's everywhere, and even when you go to sleep it looks straight at your body like at a corpse. It follows your future and you feel it when the sirens start screaming, or when your phone is bursting with worried messages and air raid updates. You can even feel it in everyday life, when you start questioning whether the money you spent on holiday sweets or cheap junk food could have saved you in the future, or saved someone's life on the frontline. And you know you don't do enough but who's there to blame for it if not you. Now you're hunted by two enemies: russians and your own sins, and they never stop following you.
Of course, you live to see another day after dangerous nights, and you keep doing what you can to help. But similar to kinzhal missiles, that are called kinzhals or daggers because they stick into targets and then explode inside of the buildings, russians have already wounded you by endagering your life, home, future, family, everything. Then you feel the dagger inside your mind explode, poisoning every second of "peaceful" life. I've survived the first wave but with each day I can feel the glass and shrapnel poking around my skull, making me behave irrationally or depressively, driving me to believe there is no future for me. I know we'll win, there is no other way, but personally I'm plagued by the damage caused to my psyche. Like everyone else here, in some way or another, we're hurt from the war and we're not safe at all, still fighting for our survival and for the hope of a better future.
I guess the only way I can conclude this post is to ask for help from people reading it. Spread the news about Ukraine, read more about current events from Ukrainians, even on this hellsite. Beware of russian propaganda, don't forget that russians are responsible for this hell. Learn and read and grow to put a stop to this illness of imperialism in your hearts at least. May we all see a better future as result of our fight.

Enjoying this new phase of my life where my friends send me coffee-table books about embroidery traditions I'm totally unfamiliar with.
Tumblr media
I'm not planning on putting out Uzbek embroidery patterns or anything. I don't know ANY modern Uzbek embroiderers—not sure I'm personally acquainted any crafters from anywhere in Central Asia, actually. The closest I get is trying to follow academic Persian art/textile history researchers on Instagram, which is amazing but also a bit tough when I know basically no Farsi.
I'm also STILL researching Ukrainian embroidery, what, five months later? And I live within reasonable travel distance of multiple Ukrainian cultural festivals, museums preserving Ukrainian material culture, and several local master teachers of the art. This is me on fast mode.
I'm just dealing with the consequences of my obsessive focus on the medieval world, which means I'm trying to catch up on the last 500 years of fashion and textile and cultural history, as fast as my brain will accept new information. Which is less quickly than I would like!
While also spending most of my working time doing a shitton of pattern design, sewing, photography, accounting, and learning how to be a boss to my new assistant. It's. A lot. Everyday I get emails.
Still. *Great* reading material.

Bayverse Headcanon: What kind of music do they like?
Idk why I had to do this, but I just had to.
Also, one day I might make more detailed versions of these scenarios.

Leonardo:
There are a few sides to the leader in blue. The part that sits in the dojo for hours, meditating in complete silence. Probably one of the few things he had to practice on - meditating with noises all around him. And then there’s the part of him that listens to music, while doing mundane things. Whether it would be cleaning his room, taking a shower, a warm up before training or just chilling in his room or on the rooftops. Leo do enjoy music a lot, he just has clear rules for when he can hear it. No modern music in the dojo! Martial arts should be honored, and to do it in other that silence would be an insult to the arts and the old masters. But outside of the dojo, it would be possible to find Leo with a pair of headphones on every once in a while.
Leo is a rock kid. Not heavy metal - no - that is just not Leo’s kind of music. But old school rock and maybe even glam rock. It was usually music with prominent guitar or bass that he often found himself listening to. It kind of fitted the way he saw himself. Th stoic leader on the rooftop, fighting with an edgy soundtrack in his head. Edgy and cool being the way he described it in his own head. It gave him a slight tingle in his stomach, when he jumped from roof to roof with his headphones on, listening to certain rock songs. He felt like a true leader, jumping high over people’s head, listening to “Zitti E Buoni” by Måneskin. When really feeling it alone in the shower, with the same song booming from his blue bluetooth speaker, he would channel his inner Damiano David, singing along to the fast part without any mistakes. Now, Leo is not usually the one to sing along to songs. He doesn't even hum that often, but when he does, it is usually in the shower. But there was this one time Raph walked past the bathroom, while Leo was screaming his heart out to a Måneskin song. Usually Raph would find a way to make fun of his brother for such a thing, but this time Raph decided not to, mainly because it didn’t sound near as bad as Raph though Leo’s singing would do.
Another artist Leo would be singing along to in the shower is Micheal Jackson. He might even do a few dance moves, but he would NEVER IN HIS LIFE, do them outside of a locked bathroom.
One of Leo’s favorite bands had to be Blur. He really liked Damon Albarn’s voice and the guitar of Graham Coxon, and would often find himself listening to them before going to bed. At one point, Leo even tried to sneak out to see all of Blur play live. Did he get in? Yes. Did he watch them from somewhere just below the roof? Yes. Did the bassist spot Leo, blink in confusion, only to look back up to find the spot Leo had been hiding in empty, with Leo having fled the scene? Yes, and that’s why Leo doesn’t do concerts anymore. But he never told his brothers. Mikey would not be happy to know that Leo had sneaked into a concert, while having told Mikey time and time again that he wasn’t allowed to.
Leo has a thing for languages when it comes to music. He grew up in New York City with English as his first language, with Japanese from Splinter following right after as his second. He decided to learn Spanish, just in case it would get useful, and since he had an Italian first name, he also learned Italien. That would probably explain some of his love for Måneskin. But Leo just really liked languages. He doesn’t have to understand the lyrics in order to enjoy it. One prime example of that is the song “Stefania” by KALUSH and Kalush orchestra, even though it is hip hop in genre. Did Leo understand any Ukrainian? Nope. But did he have a general idea of what the song was about, and found the Ukrainian language beautiful and interesting? Yes, very much. He found the courage of Ukraine inspiring, and would often use that inspiration in his training, which is why this is one of the very few songs he will actually train to outside of warm ups.
A true bedroom song for Leo is “Demoni” by Joker Out. He wouldn’t do much while listening to that. He would just lay in bed with headphones one, eyes closed while either bobbing his head or right foot to the beat. Leo isn't much of a dancer, but more a bobber. That was usually how his brothers knew if he liked a certain song; he would bob his head slightly to the beat. That only fueled Mikey’s imagination, creating a picture in his head of Leo head banging in his room to heavy metal, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Stoic Leo didn’t head bang, but he did move at least his head or foot lightly.
Now, what does Leo’s brothers like about his music taste? Well, to be honest, most of the time they weren’t too sure what kind of music Leo liked. They did know that he was into rock, and they knew very well that at this point that he liked Måneskin and Micheal Jackson. But there was this one time while driving the garbage truck, that Leo somehow got in charge of the aux. None of the guys really knew what to expect, but “Gladiator” by Jann wasn’t it. Mikey even said something along the lines of; “emo Leo doesn’t listen to My Chemical Romance”, causing Leo to remember once again, why he normally didn’t want to be in charge of the aux, and liked keeping his music to himself.
Tumblr media
Raphael:
Raph listens to music quite often. Probably not as often as Mikey, but still at way more than Donnie and Leo. One of the main reasons why Raph listens to so much music is - you probably guessed it - training. He would often lift his weights to the beat of the music, in a way that most humans could only dream of doing. But he would also listen to music on his own, either riding his motorcycle through the streets of New York City at night, or while knitting in his room.
A favorite song of Raphael’s to ride his motorcycle to was “Would You Ever” by Skrillex and Poo Bear. Swerving in and out of traffic, causing people to yell in anger in his direction, or causing groups of girls to giggle and point at the mysterious bad boy that just rode past them. Covered in a helmet and covered in a big leather jacket and cloves, he looks like a big hunk of a man, showing off his motorcycle. But would Raph play his music out loud while riding down the street? Normally he would not. But there was this one time he just couldn’t help himself. Stopping at a red light, Raph found himself beside an open roofed car, filled with giggling human girls. Most of them were tipsy, and Raph wouldn’t be too surprised if the girl in front of the steering wheel was too. Obviously, they had something for big guys, as they started asking about his name, how old he was, where he lived, or if they could get a ride on his motorcycle. Or if he would come ride with them. Raph didn’t say anything, he just pressed a button on his motorcycle, causing the music to disconnect from his helmet, and started playing from his motorcycle speakers. He saluted them, just as the light turned green, riding away while the girls stared at him in awe. In his opinion, it was very much worth it.
Raph has quite a few songs he liked lifting weights to. One of them being “Hello” by Will.I.Am. When Raphael is lifting weights, he will do it proud and loud, playing his music on a red speaker, much to the annoyance of Leonardo, who very much wants to meditate. When it came to boxing, Raph would often listen to Eminem, hyping himself up with the music or the angry lyrics, causing Mikey to ask him what the hell Eminem had done to him, since he would get the need to hit something whenever he heard his voice.
Raph would almost always find a reason to listen to Eminem. When Raph was angry and wanted to hit something; “Kamikaze”. Should Raph ever find himself mad at a woman; “Farewell”. Was Raph ever in a good mood and just wanted to dance and have fun; “Shake that”. But somehow, when Raph was sad, he wouldn’t listen to Emniem. If he was sad and decided to box, he would listen to The Weeknd. Mikey caught on to that pretty fast, and would do his little brother duty to bring up Raph’s mood, whenever he would hear the voice of The Weeknd from Raph's room.
Like Leo, Raph would also listen to music while showering. But it was while being alone in the bathroom, that Raph would listen to much that wasn’t often associated with big angry muscle men like him. It would often be more pop than electronic or hip hop. And god, how Raph hoped none of his brothers would hear him sing along to “i don’t wanna talk about love”, by Micheal Medrano. Raphael could just shut up and shower in silence, but nope, a man got to groove in the shower. Luckily for Raph, only Donnie had heard him once. Had Donnie laughed his ass off as soon as he got to his room afterwards? Yes, oh my god yes he had. But did he tell Mikey and Leo about it? Nope, he did not. But he did tell April and you about it though, and what a laugh you guys had over the phone.
Raph would never admit it to anyone, but he did listen to Madonna, and he did enjoy it. It started with “Future” by Madonna and Quavo, and before he knew it, he was sitting in his room enjoying both “Like A Prayer” and “Like A Virgin”, which led to him singing “Hung Up” in the shower. Madonna would lead to Dua Lipa, and before Raph even realized what was happening, half of his playlist would be pop power women. Loreen, Lady Gaga, old Miley Cyrus songs. And did he know the lyrics? Oh yes he did. And one time, his brothers would catch him listening to at least one of them.
It was one of those days where each turtle seemed to be doing their own thing, which left Raph alone with his work out equipment and his speaker. As usual it started out with Eminem, Juicy J, Kanye West and others, before suddenly “Rendez Vouz” by INNA. That caught Mikey’s attention, and once he heard and saw Raph dance and sing along from his hiding spot, he went to find Leo and Donnie. And oh, how they fought to keep from laughing when Raph started feeling himself too much, working out to “Work Bitch” by Brittney Spears. After that, the phrase “get to work bitch”, was used quite often around Raph.
Tumblr media
Donatello:
The purple scientist is very straightforward with his taste in music. If he likes it, he listens to it. He often has music playing while doing stuff in his lab. Sometimes calming lofi music in hopes that it could get him sleepy, but that usually didn’t work very often. Instead Donnie would often find himself listening to music from the indie scene, or what some people on the internet might call vibey music. Aesthetic music. What aesthetic, you might ask? Well, Donnie had no idea, and he most differently thought that the internet had no idea either. One of these so-called vibe or aesthetic pop songs was “HEAVEN AND BACK” by Chase Atlantic. Tapping away on his computer or connecting whatever hard drive, he found that the music helped him concentrate at the task in front of him.
Though Donnie didn’t seem to notice, his brothers did. Most of the songs he listened to had some not so happy lyrics. Often quite depressive, covered over with bass, keyboard, drum kit and sometimes even a saxophone. At one point Leo had brought this concern up with Donnie, causing the purple turtle shrug.
“Music is music. I listen to what I like”, he said, making another cup of coffee, before going back to work in his lab.
Those few times Donnie finally left his lab to relax in his room, he would read a book, listen to songs like “Quite Quitting” by NOT A TOY. To Donnie, music was mainly background noise, helping him to shut out his loud brothers so he could focus. What the lyrics said didn’t bother him too much. But there is one thing Donnie notices in most of the music he listens to; a smooth bass. It didn’t have to be a loud bass, often becoming part of the background with the drums, being overshadowed by smooth special effects or the singing. Donnie really like bass, but he also like smooth keyboards. There had been times where he had thought of getting a bass or keyboard, or maybe even make them himself. Mikey had his drum set, so Donnie might as well get a few instruments of his own.
Like Leo, Donnie liked to listen to music on the rooftops every once in a while. But unlike his brother, Donnie would usually stay at the same roof, remembering the names of stars, plants and constellations on the sky above him, while listening to songs like “ALIENS” by The Griswolds and Transviolet, wearing big soft headphones. Comfort over looks was important for Donnie, and being a mutant turtle hiding from the people of New York City, he didn’t give a crap about what his headphones look like. He thought they were nice, and he likes to wear them, and that was enough for him. His brothers, on the other hand, thought they were chunky and strange, to which he could only say it was good they were his headphones and not theirs. And it was at nights like those, that Donnie thought of how, maybe his brothers were right about his taste in music. He might be a little different from them, like how the alien was described in the song he was listening to. Not that he worried too much about it. He liked his head and the brain inside it, and with that came being different. That’s just how it was.
But not all the music Donnie listens to is filled with sadness and depression. Songs such as “Strange Clouds” by ufo ufo were a good morning song according to Donnie. When he woke up after finally having had a full night's sleep, he would listen to songs like that, while making breakfast or making his coffee. But then later in the day, sitting in front of the computer screen, once again not being able to sleep, he would listen to stuff like “Numb” by 8 graves. It was the lyrics from that song that had made Leo’s alarm bells ring. Mikey on the other hand wasn’t too worried. He just called Donnie’s music taste “calm edge lord, that doesn’t need to try hard”.
Now, if there was one artist Donatello had to say was his favorite, it would probably be Mystery Skulls, especially “Stronger”. A nice bass in front and center, backed up with synth all around. But Donnie also really liked Luke Black. Way different from all the other music Donnie would listen to, yet he really liked it. He would probably never admit it to his brothers, but he did listen to the lyrics of Luke Black, and he did find it more than a little interesting.
Tumblr media
Michelangelo:
Mikey - or as he like to call himself; DJ Mikey - listens to music all the time, every day, everywhere, rarely turning down for the sake of any of his brothers, blasting it oh so loud on his orange speaker, only putting headphones on if his brothers threatened him. Or if Master Splinter asked him to.
He sang along, danced along, sometimes even to the embarrassment of others, like the many times he would scream along to “Turn It Up” by Oliver Tree, Little Big and Tommy Cash.
Mikey likes big, loud and up beat music. Something he can move his body to and be his little happy self. It could be anything from pop to hip hop, maybe even electronic or EDM. It would usually consist of him listening to the same few songs over and over again, until he is getting slightly tired of them, while his brothers are ready to rip their heads off, or maybe dig into their skulls to rip their ears out.
With Mikey being his small ADHD self, it wouldn’t be strange for him to listen to music made by people with ADHD for people with ADHD, making a big deal out of it. One of those songs being “Irresponsible” by Emei. There was this one time he almost made Donnie deaf by blasting the song into his ears while scream: "This song is made for me!"
Much to Leo’s annoyance, Mikey didn’t follow his rule of “no music in the dojo”, since Mikey often found it easier to train with music. This man can do all of his katas perfectly, if only “Hypnodancer” by Little Big is playing in the background.
If there is one thing Mikey likes, it is listening to “Pac-man” by Gorillaz, and making eating pizza into his own version of pac man, in which his brothers are the ghosts, and he has to steal pizza from them. At this point, his older brothers know to keep a good eye on their food as soon as that song starts playing... Or if he just plays Gorillaz at all.
Another thing Mikey likes when it comes to music, is when his brothers somehow enjoy what he’s playing. It had happened before, and it would most likely happen again. Mikey sat in the middle of the lair, happily dancing where he sat while reading comics, playing “Go Bananas” by Little Big. Raph didn’t growl at him from his bench press, but instead started to lift the weights on every other beat. Donnie sat at his computer, pressing the keys of his keyboard in beat with the song, probably without noticing. And Leo was bobbing his head ever so slightly while sharpening his katanas. This had Mikey over the moon, which only caused him to want to play more music for his brothers. Every once in a while they would let him do it, just to make their little brother happy. That was the main reason why Mikey is the aux guy.
When Mikey decided to skateboard, he would most often do it with old school hip hop playing. As a turtle in the sewers of New York, that only made sense to him, which is why he often would skate up and down the sewers, vibing with “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. And of course Mikey could rap the whole thing. Now, this was one of those few songs that Leo, Raph and Donnie didn’t mind Mikey playing over and over again.
But then there were those times on patrol where Mikey just would start singing out of nowhere. When he started breaking into “Sax” by Fleur East, complete with thought out dance moves in the way only Mikey could do it, Raph was ready to throw him off the roof and down to ongoing traffic.
It would be no surprise to tell you that one of Mikey’s favorite artists is Little Big, and that he also loves Gorillaz. But he would also quite often listen to the music that his brothers were playing. He very well knew that Leo loved listening to Blur, and that most of Raph’s playlist was made up of power women, and that Donnie’s secret favorite was Luke Black. And of course Mikey could sing every single word to the songs of his brothers' favorite artists, being the little attentive brother that he is. And because his music taste had room for more than theirs had.

While reading wiktuba, I came across information that iiluminaughii is of Polish origin and it strangely makes sense (I'm from Poland, so I have more experience to say what typical Polish behavior looks like)
I am Kashubian (25% I am French, but it has nothing to do with my identity, unless the fact that I like croissants has something to do with it)
Unfortunately, being a terrible person is often seen among typical Poles (There are supposedly more nicer people, but there is no madness, because boomers and fans of conservatism still exist, and they are very prejudiced against various groups, and when they see someone standing in defending them, they will call you stupid and inexperienced (You know, that you are mature when you hate Jews, Ukrainians and other social groups)
So you can see that Blair's roots are stronger than her common sense...
Coming back, unfortunately, a lot of her behavior is so Polish, her treatment of people, abusing someone in the past and present, etc…
Poles have too big an ego, if you say something bad about him and you are not from Poland, he will be outraged, or he will tell you to get the fuck out of Poland (God damn it, I'm a Kashubian and they tell me to get the fuck out if I don't like it, yes, I have to get the fuck out of Poland my lands because I criticize Poland)
Tumblr media
So yes, it's true that Balir doesn't like movies where they talk about her harmful behavior and gives them an extension, it sounds even more Polish when I know her origins and that's disturbing
So yes, this information turned into something that now sounds too familiar to me, to a person who has lived in this country since birth and saw how Poles have a pain in the ass about everything (But criticize their racism, they will laugh at you)
So yes, Poles have learned little about the history of the Holocaust, because they are doing everything to make it Holocaust 2.0

The way Ukrainians live around missile attacks. I decided to translate it for you.
by Tatusia Bo
"My first fear after the start of the full-scale invasion is quite trivial. Like, in fact, everyone's. I fear a missile would strike while I am taking a shower. And I could see these pictures in my head — they would clear the rubble and take out my plumpy, naked, and wet body. So, I learned to wash within 3 minutes between alerts. I would jump out of the shower and be like, "Whew, not this time".
My second fear is the missile-and-the-toilet thing. I have had it since a missile attack on the neighborhood in the early morning. In fact, I was woken up by a loud bang. For I had solemnly slept through the air raid alert. The explosion, I open my eyes, and I'm already standing in the common corridor with my baby in my arms. Then there was a series of bangs, everything was shaking. And suddenly a pause... And I needed to use the toilet so badly that I was crying. I thought "Well, whatever. I'll go for it".
I went to the toilet, and as soon as I sat on it, there was a looooud bang. I was tossed up in the air along with the toilet. After that, I fear a missile attack while being in the toilet. Handsome and strong firefighters would clear it all up and find me riding a white... horse. And journalists would write: "A Woman with No Panties Found on the Toilet". And all of Kyiv would zoom in on the picture, looking at the scars and birthmarks, trying to figure out who had pissed away, well, I mean, missed the alarm.
As for panties... We were brought up mostly in post-Soviet times. Teenagers of our generation were not interested in looking under skirts. Because everyone's underpants were the same. Serhii's mom's, Olya's, and Serhii's classmate's - all the same. They were so ugly. Mothers of that time always kept new underpants in the closet for holidays and when they went to see a doctor. No matter what happened to a person, the first thing to take care of was underwear. And then the war... Once I felt a little better, the first thing I did was buying a pair of nice new panties. 'Cause, you know, what if all that happened — a missile, rubble, firefighters, the media... And maybe they would eventually write "A Woman's Body Found Under Rubble in Lovely Panties". They would write that, won't they?
One of my friends, Lena, upon returning home after de-occupation, was most offended by the Russians because they neglected even household appliances in the house, but beige, seamless, very comfortable and therefore well-worn underpants were stolen by the bastards.
My mother also had her own fear. What if a missile hit her house, everything was smashed, chickens running around, ducks were not fed, and the vegetable garden was overgrown with weeds? That's what she would tell me: "I am weeding the vegetable garden, my dear, in case a missile hits, so I have no weeds all over my potatoes."
On December 31, the Russians "greeted" us all day long with "congratulations" either by Shaheds or missiles. Neighbors from the upper floors gathered near my door in the common hallway. They would gather and grumble that the damned Russians were not letting them finish preparing the holiday meal. Someone brought out sparkling wine, and I brought out glasses: "Well, cheers to air defense."
"If they shell our house and I burn down the duck I've been cooking for three days, I won't take responsibility for my actions," said a neighbor from the 9th floor. And for some reason, I believe her.
On the morning of January 2, the Russians launched their most massive missile attack on Ukraine. When tons of explosives were flying over Kyiv, my friend Katia politely went to the subway, where we hide from missiles. And so people were shuddering from the explosions in the subway, and Katia would text us in a common chat:
"Oh, f@ck, there was such an explosion I almost dropped my croissant."
We would write back, dumbfounded:
"Katia, what croissant? Where are you?"
And Katya replied with such calmness:
"I went out for coffee, what's wrong? I am a Ukrainian woman. I want coffee and a croissant, and no f@cking Russian Kalibr (missile - ed.) is going to stop me".
Let's skip the fact that, despite the explosions all over the city, there was an open croissant shop, which is a topic for another conversation. But Katia, it turns out, is afraid of dying from a missile without drinking coffee and having a crispy croissant.
We are afraid. Oh, how scared we are. Personally, during the loudest explosion, I was pressing myself to the floor thinking, "F@ck, am I going to die in the old robe?" and anyway I donated money for drones. We are scared, scared when missiles are flying at another city, scared when the news reports on an air attack on the defense line near the city of M. We seem to be afraid every second of our lives.

Chenford - Lucy Chen / Tim Bradford - The Rookie - Season 5 - Ep 20
"S.T.R." AKA "Breakin' My Heart"
After a three week break, we were treated to a Season 6 renewal, the spoiling of Family Feud. And, to my great excitement, some bloody hi-res Chenford photos for the press!
All in all.. yesterday was a good day. But, was tonight a good night?
SPOILER ALERT: I'm the girl who literally wandered through every site on a Star Trek webring to find the Michael Jonas page full of Star Trek: Voyager spoilers. So, if you're wondering if I like spoilers, the answer is yes. I will spoil everything, so reader beware.
All clear on how this works? Golden. Because, I'm ready to dive in.
"This is ready." "That looks good." "Mm, thank you." "Mmhmm." "Hey!
Domesticity is just so cute on them. We've all been holding our breaths about the return of Isabel and what wrench it might throw in Chenford's way (or highlight, like Lucy's UC work), but golly this first scene of seeing them savoring the sweet simplicity of early love? Hell, yeah!
I'm also a huge fan of Tim cooking for Lucy. We've seen him cook for Kojo, of course, but I love that Lucy and Tim split the duties when it comes to cooking.
When Matthew and I first married, I asked what he could cook. He said, "eggs". Spoiler Alert: He could not cook eggs. At all.
So, there's a special place in my heart for men who cook for their women. And, yes, Matthew has learned to cook a lot since we wed.
Getting back to the main event—these two have been intertwined all night. You can't convince me otherwise! Neither of them is in a rush. Tim has taken some time off, and Lucy has been there for him the best she can.
And he. is. hungry. for. more. They both are! They wear the aura of, "I just saw you naked and I need to do it, again".
And insert the roommate who physically separates Chenford in a move that reminds me of the "Make Room for Jesus" moms who walk the floor at the Mormon dances. Yes, I attended one as a teenager. It was an experience.
Tim snaps into "well, that's annoying" mode, complete with the trademark raise of his hand. Lucy dutifully stays on her side of the kitchen until Tamara is cleared, and then that Lucy magnet kicks in, and it's right back to Tim's side.
"There are other rooms in the apartment for that."
Sugar, you weren't here for their first time, but you were here for their first kiss. Do you really believe they can keep their hands off of each other in any room of this apartment?
"I thought you were sleeping in today. No classes."
Okay, in that case, Lucy, maybe no hanky panky on top of the yummy yummy pancakes if Tamara is one wall away. Like, Tim pushing Lucy up against Tamara's door while she is in the room is not sexy. Right? Right.
"You want some? One or two?" "Uh, three please."
First off, love that Tim immediately jumps in to feeding his daughter. I'm Ukrainian Jew on one side and Spanish Catholic on the other. We feed people. It's what we do.
So, I love that Tim is right there for her. I also love that we've gone from, "How is that gonna work? You, me, and Tim?" to seeing it working. Yeah, she's got the typical daughter, "ewwww, don't kiss in front of me!" thing going on, but it's working. It's fitting.
And that's making my stomach hurt.
Because when things are really working in television, that's when they pull the rug out from under you. Drama, angst, instability, and misunderstandings litter our television experience.
So, I'm waiting for the bottom to drop out, as it were.
"No wait, um, shoot. Totally forgot. Uh, Isabel texted me. She's in town and needed to talk. So I just told her to come here. I hope that's okay."
Tim. This is Lucy's home and you invited your ex to her home and forgot to tell her!? Look, I think Lucy would have said yes if he'd asked, and I love that he's confident and comfortable enough to want to do this visit in front of Lucy.
But, Dude, we gotta work on your communication skills. Sex doesn't solve every problem.
"I'm sorry. I meant to tell you after you got out of the shower but, you know, I got in the shower."
I stand corrected. One mention of Shower Sex and Lucy's a little less thrown by the sudden arrival of her husband's ex and reliving that glorious ten... no... it's Tim we're talking about... twenty minutes.
Tamara, on the other hand, is rolling her eyes. But, look, girly, you're the one who encouraged your mom and dad to start shagging. So, really, if you think about it, this is on you.
"It's nice to see you again, Lucy. Thanks for letting me crash your breakfast." "No. Not at all. Um... Can I get you something?" "I wouldn't say no to some coffee."
So, Isabel's quick to read the situation, and she's actually being affable, so that's good. And Lucy's playing good host by offering her something.
And I know we're all a little peeved at Tim for parading the ex in front of his new-ish girlfriend, but I think it says a lot that they all snapped into their roles immediately.
This is Lucy's turf, and Isabel clearly understands she is a guest and not a part of this dynamic. Lucy is the wife. Tim is the husband. Isabel is the ex who we don't hate. (Ashley... now Ashley I hated)
"Tim invited her here. That's weird, right?" "No, I mean, it's totally fine. It's... It's a little weird."
Lucy can let her guard down with her daughter, and Tamara is clued into Lucy in a way Tim isn't quite yet.
Or maybe he just doesn't understand social niceties. I mean, did we ever see him host people at his house besides offering Lucy a place to crash when her best friend died?
Also, we know that he was Military before he was a Rookie, and we know he came up in the Training Academy with Isabel. So, maybe he never had a serious girlfriend before her?
Am I giving him too much leeway because I like him? Or does he need to get his ass in gear and stop flaunting the ex in front of his wifey? Maybe both.
"They're big time in Sylmar."
The power dynamic is interesting, because Tim is cluing Lucy in on this, and clearly taking that to her so she's an equal in the information.
Isabel holds the phone toward Lucy, too. So, she understands the power dynamic. And, damnit, that makes me respect her even more.
"We'll find her."
I love the immediate inclusive language. Sure, it could have been, "We, the Force, will find her", which is reading a little Star Wars coded for my liking, but you understand where I'm going, right?
I tend to think he means, "Lucy and I" because we all know he's going to pull her in.
Now, I'm still wondering how Mr. Metro got pulled into this from an assignments point-of-view (who is running Metro-Patrol liaison while he's chasing a missing girl with his ex?). Is it essential to this Meta? No. But it does give me pause, even as I've got 15 minutes left in the episode.
"Welcome back? Were you on vacation?" "I was on leave for a shooting. "I just got cleared." "You okay?" "Yeah, mostly. Lucy thinks I should start meditating... I know, right?"
First off, after three weeks I legitimately forgot that there was any shooting. Because the phrasing of this line is completely vague. If I didn't know, was he shot? Did he do the shooting? Both? Who knows!?
Second, we can see the chemistry these two had back in the day. I don't know that I'd have this kind of flirty banter with my exes, but I never dated a guy longer than a year and a half before Matthew.
"The famous Isabel."
Nyla clues in on what's going on right away. She really has this amazing ability to zero in on what's going on with Lucy, and it reminds me of her chat with Lucy when she caught her sneaking into the UC Conference.
She sort of talks Lucy through figuring things out for herself. And, yes, we've seen her do that before, too.
"You okay with that?" "Why wouldn't I be? ... It's not a big deal. I mean, he's... he's over her." "I know that. I just making sure you do." "Totally. Stop it!"
First off, girlfriends!! I remember a time when Lucy wanted so badly to be friends with Nyla and Angela. They took her out to a speed dating situation that scared the shit out of her.
Second, it's interesting seeing Lucy's insecurity manifest in a new way... that feeling that something about her is inherently wrong.
It's the programming of a lifetime of being unable to live up to her parents' expectations, and it's one of those things you spend the rest of your life working through. Over and over, again. I should know.
"He did say she looked good." "Why then would she agree to meet at his new girlfriend's apartment?"
Boom! There's my girl's confidence returning. Home base, right? Home turf advantage, right?
Also, how is Tamara allowed in here right now? I don't see her Visitor badge, she's not here on a case, and Lucy didn't walk her in. Does the Front Desk just let her in as "Roommate Privilege"?
"Chen! Let's move."
Now, we all know that Tim is more professional with Lucy inside the Station. But in light of the previous conversation, it did grate a little to hear him address her as "Chen". As though we'd lost some of that home-field advantage.
"So, how long you been dating Lucy?" "A few months. Are you seeing anyone?" ... "They were nice, but you set the bar really high."
Girl, STEP OFF my bestie's man. He is taken. You missed your chance, and now you can wallow in it away from him.
Also, I'm glad you're clean. I'm glad you can finally see that you had a good man. Perfect? Hell, no. Tim's got his issues. But he did love you and care about you.
"I get it, 'cause I held my breath every time you left on a long term assignment. Then you'd come home, and-" "And I'd still be gone in my head, no matter how much I wanted to be with you."
Ouch. So, clearly there were some communication issues, here. I get that there's a lot she couldn't discuss with Tim. But I also feel like there were some choices for her to close him off as a way to protect herself.
"You're gonna need back-up ... So Lucy's on her way here." "I can't believe after everything I put you through you're dating another UC." "I know. But Lucy's different." "She's not another junkie-in-waiting." "You know that is not what I meant." "I know, I just... seeing you again brings it all back up, you know? " "I do."
First off, I love that Tim called Lucy in. He trusts her, he knows she can get the job done, and we're a long way from him trying to shield her from UC work because of his hangups.
Now, I think he might be overcompensating a bit on that, but I'll get to that later.
I also am saddened to see Isabel's insecurities on full display, but I think it shows how far she has come. She was in full denial about being a "junkie" before, but now she's come to terms with her addiction, to a point.
It's something she'll have to live with the rest of her life, as every addict knows. And I'm grateful Tim is being so lovely with her, here. It says a lot about him and how supportive he can be, when allowed.
I think the one problem with Tim being attracted to such independent, strong women is that he doesn't want to get in their way. And that diminishing of himself is going to catch up to him, at some point.
To be clear, I'm not saying these amazing, strong women should hold back in any fashion. But, I do think that Tim needs to be upfront and honest about how he feels to help him process not only his trauma, but help him (and his partner) navigate their future.
"Be careful out there. It's been a minute since you've done this." "You wired?"
I wanted to call the juxtaposition of how Tim addresses both women as they prepare to go into this situation.
I think in some ways, Tim's still seeing the broken, frail version of Isabel he knew at the end of their relationship. But in Lucy, instead of warning her as he might have when she was a Rookie, he has full confidence in her.
For goodness sake, he called her in for this op. Tim knows that Lucy is capable, and so long as he's serving as backup, he knows he has a connection to the case and can be there for her if needed.
But next time she goes deep, again, like she did in Season 3, I have a feeling it's going to be bad for Tim.
Tim will be completely removed from the situation, back to holding his breath, as he did for Isabel. And all the old anxiety and pain is going to resurface because we all know that avoidance is Tim's method for processing trauma.
Also, Isabel's "Always the protector" rubbed me wrong for a while and I couldn't ascertain why. Something about that word, "Protector".
Someone on Twitter pointed out that Rosalind was the one to call Tim Lucy's "fierce protector" and that squared it away for me. I knew it was pinging something in my brain, but it's been a really tough evening, and I just couldn't connect the dots.
So, thank you, Twitter person, whose name I couldn't catch because the bloody feed refreshed too quickly!
"I was hoping to pick your brain a bit." "You wanna know my cheat codes for dating Tim?" "No. I've got him all figured out..."
She has for a very long time. Like, she had his number the moment she stole his wallet and made him wash dishes for dinner.
And I have to remember that Isabel doesn't know their history, here. She was absent or zoned-out on drugs for the entirety of the build up that the rest of us have witnessed.
So, it's borderline adorable in a "Bless her heart" way that she thinks Lucy needs tips, but it also shows that though she's hinted at missing Tim, she knows that's not her place, anymore.
"No, I wanted to ask you about your time under cover. You were a legend." ... "You want to know if it was worth it?"
Yes, I'm about to write all this out. We can see it as a potential preview of Tim and Lucy, as a cautionary tale of the worst way it could go, or simply a bit of wisdom for Lucy to carry with her to reflect on as she moves forward.
"Honestly, I can't answer that. Being undercover derailed my entire life. I lost my husband, my job, my self respect, almost lost my life. But I can't put all that on being a UC. Plenty of people make it out without becoming a full blown addict.... from what Tim tells me you have much healthier coping mechanisms."
So the joking about meditation comes back around to a compliment. Again, I never hated Isabel. I don't think she's the one for Tim, obviously, but she's not an inherently evil person (*cough* Ashley *cough*).
"You're always in fight or flight. that wears on your relationsh9ps no matter what.. but if you go in with your eyes open and you're prepared to make those sacrifices your experience might be different with mine. I hope it is."
That. That right there is why I don't hate this woman. Yes, she misses Tim and that possibility they had once upon a time. But, she knows that Lucy is here to stay, and the knowledge she imparts is filled with wisdom.
"Hey, you get the issue with the wire sorted out? "Yeah, we're good. it got disconnected somehow." ... "Babe, we gotta go."
Don't. Like. Her. Lying. To. Him. I'm sorry, but I keep going back to the "We don't keep secrets from one another", and that just burns me. Lucy, if you're going to do UC, you've gotta keelop some secrets. I get it. But this was a choice to lie to him when you know you're deep in UC with his UC Ex.
Maybe you both need communication lessons.
Hell, we all do, right? That's why we love these characters. They're as flawed as we are, and if they were perfect at everything every time, there'd be nowhere for their stories to grow.
But, that said, I feel like we're just building up for lies to bite Lucy in the ass when it comes to Tim. And my trust of TPTB with ships is hanging by a thread, so I'm choking down the anxiety with coke minis and edamame.
"Who's Tim?"
Love of Lucy's Life. Best Sex She's Ever Had. Hard Ass with a Tight Ass Winner Mid-Wilshire 2010-2023.
"That's not bad. Lucy?"
There it is. Him calling his girl by name.
"It's not like you'd come home and talk to me about it. This girl was clearly important to you and I'd never heard of her until this morning."
Again, we see the utter lack of communication. And we can sit here and assign blame and point fingers. That gets us nowhere. But we're seeing a blueprint for how not to do this.
If one of y'all is gonna be UC, you've got to have your communication down. Not just on favorite surfaces and positions, but on what matters to you as a unit so you can survive the stress and strain as a couple.
"I saw how alone you were at a moment I felt alone myself. So I looked out for you and took care of myself in the process."
From everything we've heard, tonight, I get the impression that Isabel self-isolates. And I get that. A lot of us do that.
And, yes, we can argue that she was undercover at this moment, but I think it's more than that. I think that something she mentioned in her past leads her to internalize rather than share.
But Tim would never draw it out of her. He's not the type. And so she squirreled deeper and deeper into herself while he spiraled, looking for what he was doing wrong.
Remember, he initially thought she was having an affair. Because he wasn't enough. Because he was doing something wrong. Because he had failed her, somehow.
There is the potential for the past to repeat itself if Tim and Lucy aren't careful.
"Do you want a beer?" "Yeah. Sounds great."
Tim and Lucy walk in, both beat from the day. He places his backpack in its usual place—beside the liquor. Lucy immediately goes for the fridge. They have a rhythm.
"She seems good. Happy." "Isabel?" "Mm." "Yeah. Yeah she deserves it." "Hmmm."
There's a little unease, there. I don't think Lucy feels threatened by Isabel anymore, but she's building up to something. Tim, on the other hand, knows there's something she's holding back.
They really do have each other's numbers. But they don't quite have the connection nailed, yet.
And we are back with these two on the couch. But this time we're not looking at the beer hand off from a birds-eye view, as though we're sneaking a peek into a potentially intimate moment.
No, this time the camera is in on the intimacy in a two-shot, and we're not voyeurs so much as a fern on the windowsill—belonging if not interacting.
"It was nice to get to know the actual person behind all your stories." "Is that what you were doing when you turned your mic off?" "No. We were talking trash about you, of course." "Funny"
I am very proud of him for calling her on it. It reminds me of the hotel scene where he was the one to bring up the blossoming attraction between them.
It's consistent that every now and then Tim will be the one to initiate the uncomfortable conversation, especially where Lucy is concerned.
"Can I share something vulnerable with you?" "Yeah, of course." I love working undercover. I love it, but I've never gone as deep as Isabel did." ... "You're worried you won't be able to handle it."
Okay, Tim is not trying to discourage her, here. On the contrary, he is prepared to build her up and tell her how wonderful she is.
We all know that Tim didn't want Lucy to go anywhere near UC. But we've also proven many times that he is fully aware of her capabilities, and even willing to help her study to reach her goals.
So, he wasn't planning on enforcing her doubts, here. He was ready to build her up, encourage her, and help her reach her goal.
Because Tim doesn't want to ever stand between someone he loves and what they truly want—because he never believes it will be him.
Tim has major issues with inadequacy and not feeling deserving of the good in his life. He had his weakness beaten into his head from a young age, and he still defaults back to it—I'm not good enough.
So, he is not going to deter Lucy from what she wants... but he should be honest. And I worry that in his quest to be most supportive boyfriend ever he is skipping honesty.
And those little lies these two have been planting will only grow and multiply, like the vines choking my carport.
"No. I'm worried that you won't."
Lucy places her hand on his shoulder, a natural place I notice that hand goes now that they're dating. He places his hand over hers, and I'm having Episode 1 of Season 5 flashbacks, except this time his hair isn't greased back and she's not wearing a nose ring.
"Pretend" my ass. These two were clearly already a thing. Right? Right.
"I'll be fine. Okay? I will."
He's trying to convince both of them, but she's unsure.
"Come here."
Lucy snuggles up against him easily, the two adopting a pose that previously was only seen by them. He wraps an arm around her, the other finding her knee as she drapes her leg over top of him. Her head rests on the crook of his arm as her hand hovers above his heart.
Tim does this little closed-eyed head shake, the same one he did when Lucy got him to admit he couldn't be objective where she was concerned.
This is not fine.
Because Lucy is terrified he'll bail as much as he's frightened he'll fail.
Think about it. Lucy has had everyone bail on her. Heck, Chris might've been the first guy she straight up broke up with. Nolan easily walked away from her, the firefighter texted his regards, and the guy before all them married her best friend who he was banging while Lucy lived with him.
Not to mention her parents. They were willing to love her as long as she stayed within the lines of her expectations. But once she pursued life as a cop, they turned their backs on her.
Her one supportive friend—her best friend—left her unwillingly. But he's still gone.
And here's Tim. She loves him. She loves them. But she also loves UnderCover. And she's terrified that if she chooses it, he's eventually going to bail because he can't handle it.
And that's really fucking unfair of her, but I also totally get it with her history.
And how she perceives his. From the outside point-of-view, she sees that Isabel was this total rock star at her job and things degraded with her and Tim to the point that she got addicted.
But there's so much more to the story than that. And Lucy's not asking Tim for that because she "knows Tim" and knows he doesn't like to talk things out. But, damnit, they need to talk things out if this is going to work.
Because Tim wanted to be a supportive husband to Isabel. Yes, he was terrified for her, but I think he thought she'd talk to him when she was ready. She never did. She never opened up.
And, again, not putting the blame for what happened in Tim's last marriage on his ex. They both bear blame for it, truly.
Lucy is different from Isabel in that she has a psych degree and understands that working through things and talking through them is essential to relationships.
However, in practice, she's one of those people who can diagnose others but not herself. We saw it when she was trying to convince herself her trauma was behind her when she returned to the Force after her abduction.
Lucy is missing a major component, here, and while she was trying to reach out to Tim, she actually pushed him away. Because he feels like he's holding her back, in some way... that he's in the way of her dreams.
And now his insecurities are on full blast. He's been doing his best to shove them down and enjoy the ride, as it were. But Isabel's presence didn't just bring up the marriage that failed, but also his feelings of inadequacy as a husband.
He likes to sit there and talk about all the things he should have done, how he failed her, how he got it wrong. Because it's so easy for him to see himself as the issue.
But he has no idea how to process because he refuses to communicate. And not communicating with Lucy is going to hurt them. It just is. Because relationships are nothing without communication.
Gosh, this reads like a major downer on an episode that had multiple kisses and lots of meaty Chenford domesticity. But, the hammer has to drop. And we, my friends, are often the nails. Yeah, my head hurts after that final scene.
Thank you so much for reading. I hope you had some fun! And I hope we end the season on a positive note for these two. They have a lot of learning to do. But if they learn to start communicating, I have high hopes for these lovebirds.
And, do me a favor and give the people you love a hug tonight. A friend of mine who's been battling terminal cancer on and off for years just got the news tonight that there's nothing more than can be done.
She is 38 and has had unfair thing after unfair thing in this life, and it bloody breaks my heart. In a few weeks, one of my few constant friends since childhood may be gone.
And I'm trying desperately to get back to Wilmington to see her before then, because sickness and treatments on both sides have kept us apart the last year.
So, hug the ones you love. Cherish them. Give someone a call. And take photos. So. Many. Photos. It's good to remember the good times when times are tough.
Goodnight, my lovelies.

Finnish Vocabulary Fun
I've always made up strange and silly examples to memorize things I'm learning—and the more outlandish, the better. (I can still remember all the French irregular verbs because of a silly song I wrote at 13.) So naturally, I've made up some silly examples and explanations to remember Finnish vocabulary words.
Here's how I memorized some Finnish words in the early days of my Duolingo progress:
Vaikea: Sometimes building IKEA furniture is hard. Se on vaIKEA.
Helppo: If something is easy, you don't need help[po].
Nauraa: This word makes me think of people imitating Australians saying, "Naurrrr," which always makes me laugh. Mä nauran.
Leipä: This word kind of sounds like хліб—the Ukrainian word for bread. Apparently both come from the same origin. Yay for language friends!
Laulaa: This word sounds a bit like singing, "La la la." So then you can write this silly sentence: Laulaja laulaa la la la.
Kirjoittaa: Jot this down. The word "jot" can be found in kirJOiTaa.
Ratsastaa: Idk but this sounds like something you'd say while riding a horse. 🤠
Etsiä: This reminds me of Etsy, where I go to search for cool gifts online. I wondered if this Finnish word was the origin of Etsy's name, and I'm annoyed to find out that it's not. At least it helps me remember this Finnish verb!
Send me your silliest vocabulary memorization tricks!

"The Oedipal Struggle of Dostoevsky Toward Gogol" (Piotr Axer) - My synthesis
Tumblr media
Hello guys it's been a long time since i haven't posted so i'm back with this synthesis of an amazing work i just read !!
You guys probably don't know about it but i'm a huge fan of literature, especially English, Japanese and Russian (even if i don't know a lot about this latter one). And today i decided to do some research about Nikolai Gogol's life & works as i already ordered some of his books. While looking for one of his specific works (i was looking for a pdf english translation of 'Hans Küchelgarten') i found a dissertation by Piotr Axer about (in large) the influence Gogol's works had on Dostoyevski's works. As i'm reading 'Crime and punishment' and planning on reading some Gogol's novels (+ i'm a huge fan of fyolai) i decided to read it. To be honest it was quite long (around 220 pages) but really interesting and i did a quick synthesis of it but instead of keeping it for myself i chose to share it here so fyolai fans, literature fans and lazy people can learn stuff (the link of the original work is at the end of the post for those who wanna go deeper and read it).
Few informations about both of the authors :
Fyodor Dostoyevski : Russian author/novelist ; 11th november 1821 - 9th february 1881 ; naturalism, realism
Nikolai Gogol : Ukrainian (russian empire) author/novelist/poet/dramatist/literary critic ; 1st april 1809 - 4th march 1852 ; formalism, realism
Sythesis :
We can feel Gogol's influence on Dostoyevski's works in many ways, but the most noticable one is the references to Gogol's characters :
"His entire estate consisted of just an overcoat, like Akaki Akakievich" ('Petersburg Dreams in Verse and Prose') => Akaki being the main character of 'The Overcoat' (one if not the most famous of Gogol's novels)
"to keep asking about Garibaldi and about italian affairs, as Poprishchin did about Spanish matters … And thus there formed within him little by little the incontrovertible assurance that he was in fact Garibaldi, brigand and violator of the natural order of things" ('Petersburg Tales') => which is an actual reference to one of the titular characters of 'Diary of a Madman' (Nikolai Gogol) whom belives himself to be Garibaldi (political italian figure, 1807-1882).
In his early years of writting Dostoyevski can't evade Gogol's influence like a young man cannot escape his parents' influence and this even if their works aren't in the same style at all (Dostoyevski : more realistic, dark and mysterious / Gogol : more satiric, controversial and humour oriented).
On the other hand, Dostoyevski critized Gogol's religious opinions but he was mostly criticizing his morals and aesthetics. However, Dostoyevski explains his religious opinions and his understanding of the use of religion in literature through 'The village of Stepanchikovo'.
In conclusion we can say that Gogol's work had a huge impact on Dostoyevski works. By being an influence at the beginning of his career but also while the maturating process of Dostoyevski's works and artistic opinions as he was contesting Gogol's aesthetic, personality and religious ideas.
I hope this quick sythesis pleased you and that you learned things if you have any questions i would gladly answer them in the comments, xoxo <33

You’re so right about West Papua. Javanese colonizers are in the comments of the original tweet like “you don’t understand, these guys were arrested because they had weapons :( “ while celebrating the Palestinian right to armed resistance. You can’t say that you stand against genocide while ignoring or justifying the one that you happen to benefit from. The West Papuans should be able to resist Indonesian colonization in any way they see fit.
anon, this is one of the most bitter truths about all this, and I'm sorry I don't want to speak out of turn but I think perhaps for a lot of people in the west it can be odd to realize that for many people in the world Palestine is an issue that transcends ideology for the most part.
so even though we in the so-called west are used to solidarity with Palestinians being a leftist thing because ain't no centrist or conservative here giving a shit about them, that's not the norm globally.
obviously the Arab and Islamic worlds are largely in solidarity because they see Arabs and Muslims having been colonized by a western proxy, a settler colonial project that is also very hostile to most of them, even though of course Palestinians are not oppressed because they are Muslim (and Christian) but because they are Palestinians. and Palestine is very diverse - many people racialized in many ways. and as we see with the treatment of Sudanese people in Egypt and other largely non-Black Arab countries, people may hold onto solidarity with one group sincerely while failing another group going through similar brutality.
I think conversations like this are best left to communities to have because they have a better understanding of their communities and these issues than I ever could, but also if we are going to ally ourselves with anti-colonial struggles for self-determination and liberation, that means ALL of them. all peoples, all cultures, no matter what what the governments occupying their homes and oppressing them are doing for Palestine or any other oppressed people.
I am so happy that so many countries are standing up for Palestinians but let's not be fooled into thinking they're just doing it because they care about liberation period - if they do at all, it is because of internal pressure from their peoples. I appreciate South Africa's work on this matter and the decades of solidarity they have had with Palestinians - but South Africa abstained from a vote condemning Russia for its annexation and invasion of Ukraine, which notably puts indigenous Crimean Tatars at significant risk. this is about geopolitics of course, not just morality... and people need to understand that.
a lot of the global south has been... not terribly great on this issue, and I mean I get it because Ukraine hasn't exactly fostered great solidarity with the global south but tbh if people are going to care about liberation, anti-imperialism and indigenous rights it really should not matter if for once the US is actually on the right side of that issue, which is really what it comes down to lbr. Ukraine is a western, white-racialized country that has benefited from white European supremacy (never gonna forget that English reporter going ~bUt ThIs iS EuRoPe~~~ lol) and that is not something that can or should be overlooked by supporters of Ukrainian self-determination as it often is. and then there's the overwhelming support for Israel from Ukraine, which is abhorrent and I know there is also support for Palestine there too. But it's very telling that when push comes to show, that solidarity is lacking.
when it comes to Indonesia and West Papuans, there is no room for ambiguity - it is genocide, it is colonialism, it is occupation. one thing I have learned through this is that cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.
people BELIEVE there is a real substantive difference between whatever resistance movement they support and whatever groups that their own governments are oppressing, or that are not geopolitically "aligned" with their politics. as if their politics shouldn't be informed by liberation PERIOD.
every time there is a big post about multiple genocides/atrocities in general, there's always people in the comments going "Well actualllyyyyy x is not being genocided because y" and it's like... how do you know that? how do you know that the uyghur cultural genocide* is not happening???? we literally say all the time that genocide doesn't always mean the complete murder of every single person in a group, why are we being like this??? cultural genocide is genocide, and it can easily escalate into mass murder. how is this up for fucking debate.
anyway, I have to go to work but yeah anon I get it. people need to unlearn nationalism and learn how to critically engage with their governments' histories. all of us. sorry it's coming from a us american but I think I know a little something about that.
*I understand the US is full of shit on this and has pushed some propaganda but that does not mean I do not have solidarity with the Uyghurs.
